Studwell To Go Into Vikings Ring of Honor Today

Entering today’s game against Chicago, there are 17 distinguished members of the Vikings Ring of Honor. But at halftime of today’s game, the Vikings will add an 18th member to this exclusive club – Scott Studwell.

Studwell will receive the highest honor the team can bestow upon an individual in front of a soldout crowd, several current Ring of Honor members and family and friends.

“It was certainly a shock,” Studwell, who always prefers to remain out of the limelight, said at the time. “But it’s a tremendous honor to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the great individuals in our organization.”

For Vikings fans, Studwell’s inclusion in the Ring of Honor is no surprise. He’s been a part of the Vikings family for over 3 decades and his fingerprints are all over the success the franchise has enjoyed since his arrival as a 9th round draft pick in 1977.

A Vikings LB for 14 seasons (1977-90), Studwell is the standard by which all other Vikings LBs are measured. He is the Vikings career leader in combined tackles (1,981), defensive tackles (1,928), single-season tackles (230 – 1981) and single-game tackles (24 @ Detroit 11/17/85). Studwell was a 2-time Pro Bowler and was also named to the Vikings 25th and 40th Anniversary All-Time Teams.

It’s a tireless work ethic and love for football that has allowed Studwell to remain with the franchise after his playing days. Following retirement, Studwell worked in the player programs department and eventually found his niche in the player personnel/scouting department.

Studwell learned from longtime Vikings scouts Conrad Cardano, Frank Gilliam and Jerry Reichow and ascended the ranks in the personnel/scouting department. Currently in his 18th year in the front office, Studwell is the Director of College Scouting.

Studwell Reacts

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 10, 2009 – 6:45 pm

For 33 years, Scot Studwell has gone about his work inside the Vikings organization in workman-like fashion. Whether tallying a franchise-record number of career tackles or digging deep to devise the best draft strategy, Studwell has gone about his business quietly and professionally.

On Monday, Studwell was asked by Vikings ownership to become the next member of the Vikings Ring of Honor, the highest honor the Vikings can bestow upon an individual.

I reached him via cell phone on Monday evening as he was on the road (already back to work, figures!), and Scott was kind enough to share his reaction.

“It was certainly a shock,” Studwell said. “But it’s a tremendous honor to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the great individuals in our organization. The 33 years I’ve spent in this organization with so many great teammates, coaches, staff members and people has truly been an honor. This is just off the charts. It still hasn’t sunk in yet. I’m thrilled and humbled.”
