SI’s King Ranks Harvin Most Impressive Rookie

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 26, 2009 – 8:18 am

In his weekly Monday Morning QB – Tuesday Edition column, Sports Illustrated’s Peter King was asked about some of the most impressive rookies he’s seen in the preseason and he ranked Vikings WR Percy Harvin #1 on his list.

In his explanation for ranking Harvin 1st, King says: “Impact player beginning opening day.”

Also in his list of the 10 most impressive rookies in the preseason, King lists former Wayzata High School star James Laurinaitis 3rd. Laurinaitis was drafted this past April by the St. Louis Rams, and King said in his explanation for ranking him 3rd that he “[T]ook over starting mike ‘backer job after three pro practices.”

Laurinaitis’ position coach in St. Louis is Paul Ferraro, who was the Vikings special teams coordinator for 3 seasons (2006-2008).

The National Guys Are Nice

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 7, 2009 – 6:46 pm

Over the past couple of days several prominent national media personalities who cover the NFL have swung through Vikings training camp in Mankato. It’s always a goal of ours at vikings.com to try and speak with those guys because they have lots of credibility with the fans.

Recently, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock took a few moments to chat with us. He’s been a great friend of vikings.com and he’s done a terrific job not only on NFL Network, but also as a broadcaster for Vikings preseason games. Later in the week, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Sports Illustrated’s Peter King also made appearances at Vikings training camp.

When national reporters such as King and Mortensen visit a team’s training camp, they are usually pretty busy. Their goal is to talk to as many important people as possible to get a feel for that team’s camp, and then quickly move on to the next team’s camp. In the midst of their busy schedules, both King and Mortensen graciously took a few moments to answer a few question for vikings.com. Click here to see what King had to say and click here to see what Mortensen had to say.

Although they have the notoriety and persona that would cause many people to act not so nice to team website guys like us, they were actually quite the opposite. The national guys were nice. So thanks, Peter King and Chris Mortensen!

NFL.com Checks in on Vikings Training Camp

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 6, 2009 – 8:42 am

NFL.com’s Steve Wyche was in Mankato yesterday as part of his tour of NFL camps, one of several national media members to come through Vikings training camp this week. And although he only spent a day here, Wyche filed a couple of reports that are worth a read.

This comprehensive report from Wyche addresses several toics, including the Vikings QB situation, rookie WR Percy Harvin and LBs Jasper Brinkley and E.J. Henderson. Also, NFL.com put together a general page that touches on a key position battle, a fantasy football analysis of the Vikings and 3 key questions the Purple have heading into 2009.

Today should be another busy day at training camp, with 2 practices scheduled and more national media members set to arrive. SI.com’s Peter King just walked into our workroom, so we’ll try to catch up with him at some point today. That’s it for now, we’ll be back later with more updates
