Draft Preview: Investing In Returns

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 23, 2013 – 5:43 pm

How early would you be willing to draft a return specialist? This is a player who is categorized under a specific position, but you’ve drafted him to serve exclusively as a return specialist for your club, at least for the first season of his career while he develops at his standard position.

Think of Devin Hester, for example. While he is listed as a receiver and has played that position for the Bears recently, the 2013 plan for Hester is to focus primarily on return duties. If Devin Hester were eligible in this year’s draft, where would you be willing to select him?

Keep that question in mind as you analyze the group of players we’ve compiled as draftable return specialists. Also keep in mind that elite prospects at standard positions who also project to be returners are not included in this piece, such as West Virginia’s Tavon Austin, Oregon’s Kenjon Barner, LSU’s Tyrann Mathieu and Tennessee’s Cordarrelle Patterson.

As usual, we want you to be involved. Let us know what you think by leaving your thoughts in the comments section below this entry or by emailing me for possible inclusion in a future Pick 6 or Monday Morning Mailbag.

Immediate Game-Changers

goodwin-blog

WR Marquise Goodwin (Texas)
— Fastest timed player at the Combine (4.27 in the 40)
— Olympic track athlete (Participated in London Games)
— Explosive measurables besides speed (132.0-inch broad jump)
— Career kickoff return numbers: 44-985-1 (22.4 average)

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Round

Summary: Goodwin may develop into a solid NFL WR one day, but short arms, small hands and a need for improved route running make the primary KR role a better fit in Year 1.

WR Ace Sanders (South Carolina)
— Has potential as WR in NFL, but will instantly upgrade return game
— A true game-breaker who scouts describe as “quick twitch” with great feet, agility and instincts
— Set school record with 429 yards on 28 punt returns in 2012
— Career punt return numbers: 72-578-3

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Round

Summary: One of the more electric playmakers in this draft, Sanders could step in as an elite punt returner immediately and provides intriguing potential as a kickoff returner as well. Rare acceleration ability combined with rare awareness of where the creases will open.

RB Onterio McCalebb (Auburn)
– In 4 seasons at Auburn, had career kickoff return numbers of: 53-1,360-2 (25.7 average)
— Had returns of 100, 99 and 83 yards
— Fastest 40 time for RBs at Combine (4.34) – great accelerator
— Long, lean, wiry frame but doesn’t take big hits and has limited injury history
— No punt return history

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Round

Summary: A gadget player for Auburn’s dynamic offense, McCalebb was an all-purpose yardage machine and is a great candidate to focus on return role during the early stages of his career. He has big-time playmaking ability, reaches top speed quickly and has elite change of direction ability.

WR Denard Robinson (Michigan)
— A+ athlete with experience playing QB, RB and WR and was 2010 Big 10 Offensive Player of the Year as a QB.
— Transitioning to new position in the NFL (WR) and worked as a returner during pre-draft build-up
— Explosive measurables, great top-end speed (4.43), experienced playmaker

NFL.com Grade: 2nd-3rd Round

Summary: Robinson just has too much equity built up in terms of making big plays in big games to write him off as he switches positions coming into the NFL. He struggled fielding kicks and punts during Senior Bowl week, but has worked tirelessly since to improve and definitely has the “it” factor to him.

Will Compete For Starting Role

RB Kerwynn Williams (Utah State)
— Accomplished and experienced college kickoff returner with career numbers of: 91-2,272-1 (25.0)
— Full-time kickoff returner as freshman (53-1,444-1)
— Also returned punts occasionally (15 career punt returns)
— Developed as a RB behind NFL talent and started as a freshman, so he could have visions of developing into RB role in NFL down the road.
— 4.46-4.48 in 40-yard dash, top Combine performer in 20-yard shuttle (4.15), explosive in vertical, broad jumps

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Round

Summary: Another yardage machine, Williams leaves Utah State as the school’s and conferences all-time leader in all-purpose yardage. Appears to have potential as an NFL RB, but could be a difference-maker as a returner while that development takes place.

RB Theo Riddick (Notre Dame)
– Career kickoff return numbers:  47-1051-0 (22.4)
— Was Notre Dame’s primary kickoff returner in 2009 – 37-849-0 (22.9)
— Versatile player at Notre Dame – started at WR (2010) and led team in rushing (2012)

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Rounder

Summary: You can question whether or not Riddick has the long speed necessary to be an elite returner, but he does have excellent change of direction ability, is a proven versatile commodity and is known as a hard worker and team-first guy.

RB Michael Ford (LSU)
— Has just one season with return experience at LSU – kickoff return numbers of : 20-549-0
— Ran solid  4.5 in the 40-yard dash at the Combine, but Pro Football Weekly has him listed with a 4.46
— His 38½ vertical leap indicates explosiveness.

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Rounder

Summary: Ford was not heavily used as a RB at LSU, so there’s plenty of tread on the tires and he may cherish a role as a possible primary returner. Time speeds in drills are impressive, production at LSU doesn’t help his stock.

WR Jasper Collins (Mount Union)
– Was primary punt returner for 3 seasons – 38-605-3 (15.9)
— Snubbed by Combine but estimated 40-time is 4.55
— Helped Mount Union go 15-0 in 2012 as team’s leading receiver (no returns in ‘12)

NFL.com Grade: Ungraded

Summary: Hard to gauge true value as a returner because he stepped away entirely from that role as a senior. Solid 40-yard dash time combined with 15.9-yard average per punt return indicates he might have ability to fill this role in the NFL.

WR Alan Bonner (Jacksonville State)
— Productive and experienced returner in college – full-time role as a freshman and sophomore, but eventually became starter at WR.
— Career kickoff return numbers of: 46-1,020 (22.2) and career punt return numbers of: 87-972 (11.2)

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Round

Summary: Scouting reports describe Bonner as not explosive, but it’s hard not to like his experience and production as a returner in college. The fact that he’s experienced at both kickoff and punt return is a plus.

RB Chris Thompson (Florida State)
— Limited kickoff return experience at FSU:  8-183
— Pro Football Weekly has him with a 4.45 time in 40-yard dash

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Round

Summary: Big-time talent as a RB at Florida State, but injuries (broken back, ACL) derailed his chances of becoming a top-flight prospect as a ball-carrier. But that’s the rub here. Can he use his RB skill set in combo with elite track speed to be a returner at the NFL level and open the door for one day ascending the depth chart to carry the rock for an NFL team?

CB Greg Reid (Valdosta State)
— Electric playmaker for Florida State and then Valdosta State with some potential as a DB
— Was a kickoff and punt returner in college, posting totals of 63-1,553 (24.7) as a kickoff returner and 89-1,117-3 (12.6) on punt returns

NFL.com Grade: 4th-7th Round

Summary: The NFL.com scouting report on Reid says: “Electric returner. A threat to take the ball to the house any time he touches the football due to elusiveness and tremendous open-field vision.” The report also sites an ACL injury and off-field concerns as reasons he’ll go undrafted.

Others To Consider

CB Adrian Bushell (Louisville)
— Moved around during college career but settled at Louisville for 2 seasons
— Had 2-year KOR total of 26-609-1 (23.4)

Summary: Bushell had moderate production in college and lacks elite athletic traits, but he needs major refinement at CB so he’s a candidate for primary return duties.

CB Mike Edwards (Hawaii)
– Moved around in college, settled at Hawaii for 2 seasons
— 2-year kickoff return total of 84-2,301-3 (27.4)
— Named Mountain West Special Teams POY in ’12 for return production (30.4 + 3 TDs)

Summary: His size and technique deficiency makes him a candidate for primary return duty in the NFL.

CB Khalid Wooten (Nevada)
— Experience and solid production as both kickoff returner and punt returner
— Kickoff return total of 23-493 (21.4) and punt return total of 19-242 (12.7)

Summary: Wooten is a classic “height-weight-speed” prospect who will use special teams roles to stick on a roster in hopes of developing into a defender.

    With Harvin gone we need to look for a Return Specialist. Hopefully someone that is good as Hester.

    I think Dennard Robinson would be a steal if we could get him early in the 3rd round or even late in the 2nd round.He could be a great returner a heck of a slot receiver he could line up in the backfield.If we could get him Mathieu and Teo I would be in hog heaven and praise Spielman for the rest of my life.

    Manti Te’o – LB – Player An anonymous scout tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel his team has removed Notre Dame ILB Manti Te’o from its draft board.
    “We’ve kind of taken him off the board,” the scout said. “He doesn’t have enough ability to put up with all (his off-the-field issues). Why fool with it? … This was the first year he’s really gotten himself in shape. Some of his teammates think he’s kind of a phony.” Another scout called Te’o a pretty good player in the “grand scheme” of things, but believes he’s a second-round talent. Te’o is a fringe first-round prospect, but will undoubtedly be talked up as one of the most important prospects of the past decade during ESPN and NFL Network’s draft coverage.

    @WR Hopkins I want Manti Teo and if we could get Patterson that would be a great 1st round if not Patterson then I want you Hopkins he is an all around receiver but I think we could get you in the 2nd round (no offence).If we don’t get Patterson then take best Dtackle get Mathieu and Dennard Robinson in 2nd or 3rd round.

    @Most Bloggers,

    JOE WEBB will always be the jones’ candidate for Vikings QB. It does not matter if it makes sense or not. We may not have seen the best of Joe, and all anyone needs to do at that position is to be consistent.

    We have not seen a consistent QB for the Vikings since Favre in 2009.

    JOE MUST BELIEVE!!!

    if there’s a what are run on wide receivers I say we move up and get the TE when you think about it the NFC North has many great Seabees what we can attack are the vulnerable LB’s just visualize what Rudolph and a top TE with Adrian Peterson in the backfield can do this opens up all types of Nightmare scenarios for defensive coordinators

  42. By PAUL M. on Apr 25, 2013 | Reply

    if there is a run on WR’s then why not go for a TE add him to Rudolf along with Adrian in the backfield and now you can attack NFC North LB’s instead of the NFC North strong CBs. this would present a nightmare scenario for defenses

    EXCELLENT DRAFT! I am pumped.

    wonder if Spielman has any other majic up his sleeve. Like using that 4th and maybe a 2014 draft pick to move into the 2nd or 3rd round to grab a inside linebacker.

    Defensive line should be a force. Alen, Williams, Floyd, Robinson. Some good depth with ballard, etc too.

    Really need an inside linebacker at this point unless Audie Cole is developing into something special.

    Offense should be a force too with Greg Jennings and Patterson. Defenses will have to pick their poison. Put 8 in the box to try to stop Peterson or get stung though the air. If Ponder still can’t get the ball to Jennings, Patterson, Wright, and TE rudolph… the vikings will know they need a new QB. Especially with the running game they have.

    This has the makings of a fun upcoming season!

    A+ for the draft and it’s not even 100% over yet.

    The jones is embarrassed with some of the posts expressed by myself and others on the Vikings.com blog.

    It was fun to have the freedom. It was fun to express the anger, and to show outrage towards the nastiness of the powers that be.

    For example…IN THIS LEAGUE. IN THIS LEAGUE. IT’S BECOME A HABIT!!!

    LOL X 7

    Ryan Mallet is supposed to be slow and I don’t just mean as a runner.

    GO with JOE!

  81. By pondersucks07 on Apr 26, 2013 | Reply

    Pondersucks07 knows Ryan Mallet is only slow in running not up stairs. Mallet ran pro style at Arkansas. Big time arm doesn’t have to roll out to find passing lanes 6’6″ . Father was or is a coach. Childs and Wright all ready played with him and they all are on the same page. If you notice Wrights and Childs highlight films that would be mallet throwing them the ball. Mallet had the highest comp pct. fifteen yds. or more down field. Pocket passer and knows how to step up in the pocket. will take a hit while delivering ball on target. Only reason he fell in draft was so called red flags which has not been any issues in New England. In fact left Michigan to go to Arkansas to play in pro style offense. Head coach says steal at a third round selection . I think he is pretty good judge of qb talent which is the only thing Spielman lacks of. Spielman never pick a good QB no matter where he has GM at.

  83. By pondersucks07 on Apr 26, 2013 | Reply

    We will never know if Joe Webb can play QB with the Vikes. Childress selection. Joe will not get the full support on this staff. Joe takes all the blame for last season because Ponder couldn’t play with a bruise. Just a bruise , you would have to force True leader from playing that game. Greenbay it was Greenbay in the playoffs. Are you kidding me he didn’t even give it a go. Rivers played with a torn mcl. AD AND AN played the last six games with an injury , a painful one too. I can’t believe Ponder would turn the ball over to a guy that has not played in over a year let alone knows he has never work with the first unit in two yrs.When the last time Webb had a shot at starting before Favre show up. that’s the last time anybody gave Joe a shot and he look good in the preseason that year. No time since then with the first unit until three days before game in which coaches still thought ponder was going to play so didn’t change game plan. had to run a basic offense which Greenbay took full advantaged of.

    @ponders,

    Thank you for the update on Mallet. The jonesboy never considered that he played with Wright and Childs. Perhaps Mallet would be a good one.

    I think people will be upset with the new format. I tried the Redskins and Lions blogs and did not like them. They put you in a pattern, and there isn’t as much freedom.

  86. By Frederick Jones on Apr 27, 2013 | Reply

    Change for changes sake I guess, just like the uniform.

    It could also be “If it’s not broke, break it.” It is possible for a team to get complacent if you try to keep everything the same. Change is often good.

    I just wish they would also consider the fans. Why not ask us.

    Several reasons why I am finished with the Vikings.(1) Frazier. (2) Ponder. (3) Greedy owners. (4) Dumping good Players.

    (Frazier) Didn’t have the brains to have a spy in the broadcast booth keeping tabs on how many yards Peterson needed to break the rushing record.

    (Ponder) Most hyped, worthless excuse for a quarterback that has ever came down the pike.

    (Greedy owners) Noting that the State of Minnesota is broke, those rich swine want the new stadium given to them at no cost, or very little to themselves.

    (Dumping good players) This has been the history of idiots running the show.Too many to list here, everyone knows who they are.

If you measure a QB’s success by the early portion of his career, let me throw this at you. Tim Tebow has won more playoff games than Dalton, but who is the better QB? A lot of fans are expecting a lot of Dalton this year, and rightfully so. But let’s not throw him under the bus if this year doesn’t go exactly as planned. The guy has taken this team in the right direction as a franchise, if we stick it out with him, we should have great success for the next decade.”

Kluwe didn’t have that bad a year to use a 5th round pick (the punter they drafted is very good and kicks left footed. difficult for return men to catch) Watch all the UCLA football games live in so cal.

In my eyes Patterson is by far the BEST WR in the draft!!!! Patterson will become a elite WR superstar in the NFL. We picked a BEAST DT. And we picked up a COVER CORNER. Those 3 picks were gigantic and will help our Vikings take a step forward big time this year.

    Ponder has had good games, and bad games. If you only pay attention to the bad games you end up writing posts with faulty logic. Take a logic class so you don’t sound like such a moron when you write. Again, I’m not attacking your opinion, but your lack of ability to support your claims.

    SaltDog no need for the insults. I don’t watch ponder with my heart or listen to homers on the radio trying to justify picking a 5th round talent with the 12th pick of 2011 draft. Do some research on Ponder when he played at Fla. ST. you will see what I am talking about and don’t just look at the highlights only look at the whole games. I like Spielman but he has never drafted a good QB in any draft here or in any other team he has been with. Watch the games with your eyes not with your heart and what the home team feeds you that’s there job. If they told you what they really thought they would be jobless. Don’t drink the purple KOOL_AID. Viking fan since 68. Vikings have drafted only three good QBS Fran Tarkington 3rd round. Tommy Kramer 1st round and Dante Culpepper 1st round.

    1. That is not the only basis to judge a punter in today’s NFL.
    2. At least 3 of the guys ahead of him played for more than one team!
    3. We do not know how many actual ATTEMPTS each punter had
    (I suggest it was not very fair to all the punters!)

    Kluwe’s dismissal is because of salary. (Greg Coleman was the best all around punter the Vikings ever had, but next to him, Kluwe was the best pure punter.)

    Offense sells the tickets, defense wins games, kicking wins championships.

    @BlueBird7,

    Even the great Bud Grant in 1971 played the worst of his three QBs. Norm Snead went on to lead the NFC in passing in 1972, Grant hardly played him.

    Bob Lee went on to start some games for Atlanta. The Falcons started turning things around under Lee.

    Gary Cuozzo was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for John Gilliam, and did next to nothing for the Cards. Cuozzo played most of the games for MN in 1971.

    So we can’t expect Frazier to deviate much from that norm.

    The thing that scares me is that you might be 2-0 after this week.

    If they use the same game plan, they will get the same results.

    We MUST run Peterson 30 or more times to win vs the Bears.
    I don’t see us doing that unless we get a lead. Why are we so predictable?
    Any fan in the league can see our game plan!!!

    Cassel may not appear until week 3 regardless!!! We needed to start out with a home game this year.

    @Fred

    Have you seen Musgraves game plan he is holding on the sidelines?

    It is about the same size as a Postage Stamp, with about 2 plays!
    (1) Pass by Ponder for 5 yards (2) Run by Peterson up the middle…

  252. By Frederick Jones on Sep 11, 2013 | Reply

    @BlueBird7,

    I am beginning to believe that Musgrave’s plan is that simple. Green Bay under Lombardi had 6 plays (12 total if you include both sides of the field), and they felt like they had a play for every situation.

    But that was in the 1960s when they ran the ball and took their time between plays.

    We need to throw the ball and continue to run it even if we do happen to complete a throw beyond 7 yards!

    The whole thing could be different under Cassel. When it comes to selecting the QB, sometime the fans are correct.

    Cassel seems worlds better to the Frederick.

    JOE WEBB was not the first QB to face racial pressure. He certainly was not given close to the first QB to be rejected because he is black.

    MARLIN BRISCOE gives a good analysis of his experience as a QB turned to WR. What’s different than Joe Webb’s experiences at MN.

    Let’s try to think they will be 3-2 after Carolina. That is the way it should be and so Jones has written!!!

    @Bird in the Blue,

    I still think that Joe Webb has more potential than Mr. Ponder. He can just do more with the football. It is true that he is a bit more raw. But I sure do not see MBT doing anything, and so far they have not used Joe on offense.

    He is one of the greatest athletes in the NFL. 21 x 225 BP, World Class Leaper, and I’ve forgotten what his 40 time is but he also has agility.

    The most EMBARRASING loss by a Vikings team since 1968.

  275. By Frederick Jones on Sep 22, 2013 | Reply

    The biggest problem with this team might be the coaching because of the selection of personnel.

    The loss of this game was not Marcus Sherel’s (Rochester John Marshall and Univ. of MN) fault. He always tackled his guy immediately after the catch and had some key stops as well.

    They should be starting Cassel (or Webb), Sherels, Griffen, and probably a host of other guys. The coaches on this team apparently cannot judge talent.

    Obviously the Offensive Line was not a strong part of the Vikings team as Frazier claimed during the pre-season. Perhaps there is a guy who could start instead of one of the odorous group we have there now.

    The defensive line cannot rush the passer. That is why I favor Griffen starting.

    Yes, the Vikings are that bad.

    Do you have the feeling that if Cassel, Webb, or even MBT were starting it would be a different story?

    Perhaps Ponder will be the next Terry Bradshaw or Bart Starr who took 5 seasons to develop. But there are no signs.

    “A QB cannot beat a team with his legs,” is still true today. Why because you must “share the wealth.”

    It might help Ponder to see the receivers if Frazier or Musgrave hold a stepladder.

    I don’t see Frazier replacing Ponder. That would be an admission he is wrong.

  282. By Frederick Jones on Sep 24, 2013 | Reply

    @Emperor BlueBird7,

    Ponder is listed at 6-2. Perhaps in reality he is 6-0 5/12 or something of that order. However Tarkenton was probably shorter than that.

    The offensive linemen may be a bit taller.

    Yet I doubt any of those is an excuse, he has to be able to see down field. I just think he has only one type of b a l l that he can throw…a line drive.

    A line drive will not work all the time, and it’s harder to be accurate with it. Gary Cuozzo may have had the same problem. Cuozzo looked great drilling it over the middle. So did Steve Dils.

  283. By Frederick Jones on Sep 24, 2013 | Reply

    @BlueBird7 and Leslie Frazier,

    Fans have complained from day 1 that Ponder is not accurate. Jones is finally seeing the light.

    Sure the offensive line stinks. Perhaps they do not believe in their QB?

    The defensive line stinks.

    The defensive backs, LBs, WRs, and RBs stink (except for AD)

    But a new QB would change things the quickest. Try Cassel, try Marcus Sherels, do ANYTHING, just DO something!!!

    Now it is true that C a s s e l has a lot more experience as an NFL QB. Maybe that will make a difference. I hope so!!!

    NFL teams have given up too quickly on Vince Young, Joe Webb, and Jeff George. Playing QB is not any easier than it was in the 1950s and 1960s when it took Bart Starr 5 seasons to learn the position.

    The game with NY had Freeman in the number 12 jersey. That was Harvins.

    Just another reason I can’t wait for the Nov 17 Seattle game .Seahawks will win.

    @BlueBird7,

    I said NY 35-31, but was optimistically thinking they might pull it out.

    The defense did a bit better than the previous week. No one will say they are a strong group at this point.

    Are you now a Seahawks fan?

    @BlueBird7,

    Well the S’Hawks certainly are a favorite for winning the Super Bowl. I picked up a book by Coach Pete Carroll called “Win Forever,” which is also is coaching philosophy.

    It all boils down to which team stays healthy and plays well in December/January.

    First time since 1964 that the Gophers have beat Nebraska……………

    The Patterson KO TD was great. There was lots of blocking on that play. I was able to see Gerhart make two blocks alone.

    Then Patterson is skipping and I don’t know what else around the end zone.

    WHY WASN’T IT ABOUT THE TEAM!!!

    HE SHOULD HAVE GIVEN THE BALL TO A TEAMMATE!

    THIS IS NOT THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE VIKINGS, BUT IT IS A SYMBOL OF THE WEAK TEAMWORK WE SEE.

    Rodgers had time to call his mother and talk about the Thanksgiving plans, but Greenway eventually got a sack. Good coverage will net some sacks.

    But can the Vikings win without a rush?

    Irene hunter 44 is NOT Bluebird. My unit was down and in for repairs.
    I borrowed her unit to try to get back on line. I tried to get back on to defend myself from the likes of novascotiavike attacks.

    Irene is NOT a Viking fan. Her team is the RAMS, since the early 1960’s.

    She has a signed Jim Everett number 11 Jersey obtained during one of his fund raising tours in Calif.

    novascotiavike uses his up or down thumb to give others posters a down thumb.
    He does this because he knows it will be blamed on me, He did it to roger twice.

    I use the thumb for the content of a post, not the poster himself. exception is Nova. He is a vicious person who will turn on any of you. He earns his.

    \Don’t send Ponder to the Rams. Send Joe Webb instead. Joe will get the RAMS their Second Superbowl.

    That is correct. The RAMS won on Jan 30, 2000 in the Georgia Dome, 23-16
    RAMS have one more SB win then the Vikings.

    We are talking a quick six points!!!

  380. By Frederick Jones on Oct 31, 2013 | Reply

    @BlueBird7,

    If you can’t find the section or video, it is the most recent Paul Allen one where he talks to Bercich and later Leber.

    Leber talks to us about one-on-one cornerback play. I could see them play it that way on 3rd and 2 situations. But it would be too dangerous to play it that way all the time, EXCEPT, of course our safeties play 20 yards deep to make up for it.

    We need to use a little variety in our defense. This is the only team that has played it that way in MN. Perhaps that is why we only get about 7 ints per season.

  381. By Frederick Jones on Oct 31, 2013 | Reply

    What happened to playing BEHIND the receiver???

    Football has changed? But the fundamentals never change. If you can guard him by going in front…fine. But if you can’t then you must get behind him. How many times have we seen Vikings getting beat with the receiver behind him?

    Over and over and over and over. Dallas is going to kill us.

    You must have the physical talent AND mental talent to play NFL QB. That will never change. The coaches can’t be told that.

    I remember watching a bowl game the MN Gophers were involved in. They were ahead by like 35 points at the half. All they had to do was throw the ball A FEW TIMES TO KEEP THE DEFENSE HONEST. But the Head Coach (Mason) was a know it all. He thought he could run the clock out by strictly running FOR A WHOLE HALF!!!

    As you probably recall the Vikings were 12-2 (Joe Kapp) in 1969, then like 12-2 and 11-3 under Cuozzo. Cuozzo seemed to have some of the qualities of
    C.Ponder only I think he may have had a slightly stronger arm, but could not run.

    It’s just the last time l o g i c seemed to indicate a change at QB in Vikingland.

    But these coaches seem to believe that Ponder has a much larger upside than either C a s s e l or Freeman.

    After seeing the Redskins game I could be convinced of that, although clearly
    C a s s e l and Freeman are better NOW!

    Perhaps the best thing would be to use ponder or Freeman as the reliever if Cassel is having a bad game.

    We do not have a great quarterback yet, and they are inconsistent.

    So tell these coaches not to be afraid to substitute, it is like any other position. If you insist on starting one guy through thick and thin, the THIN will make it a controversy.

    Cassel is the starter, ponder is the reliever (if you insist). He has not earned his capital letter yet. ponder that ponder!

    You have been blue longer than I over the starting of ponder. ponder has had more chances to start at QB than Bill Belichick has had to be a Head Coach.

    ponder is spelled with a lower case initial letter, until he has an arm/body that can throw a b a l l more than 40 yards.

    You were correct about the Ravens game although I bet it wasn’t what you expected.

    Sometimes I have been able to write words on this site that we couldn’t before.

    Do the Vikings need a blog?

    I tend to think we don’t even need ONE because too much negative stuff gets into the media anyway.

    What is your overall prediction record this year? I haven’t kept track of mine since I predicted some wins where they lost.

    @Blue,

    Why did it take Frazier until 2:53 on Wednesday to name the starter for this week’s game for Philly?

    Does it matter? I know Bud Grant had kind of the same policy. That is he wouldn’t make decisions until he until the last minute if he could do it that way.

    Vikings 48 Eagles 30

    The Vikings smelled a lot better today.

    Should the Vikings trade Peterson for a DT and an LB?

    W/O Peterson they knew they had to throw. It’s like Jabbar late in his career. The Lakers knew they were better without Jabbar in there.

    Our defense does need improvement for the Vikings to be among the NFL”s
    best teams.

    DB maybe okay if we can get some throw rush and cover short throws.

  453. By Frederick Jones on Dec 24, 2013 | Reply

    @Spencer,

    Yes,

    Jim Souhan exposed the 3 headed monster that was our GM a couple of years ago. I think though that Rick does not know the game of football as well as he thinks he does.

    We needed offensive linemen for this year, and as I recall we didn’t get anyone!
    NO ONE!!!

    Frazier comes out and says the O Line is one of the strengths of the team, which I guess is what he is supposed to say. But they were woefully inadequate, especially in blocking for the throw game.

    This might be because you can run to a side and avoid some bad blocks. But when it comes to “throw blocking” all must do their jobs or it will be a busted play.

    Jones thinks that Kalil and Sullivan are above average. But the rest of those guys are reserves at best. They are not athletic guys. In today’s NFL, even the offensive linemen have to be athletic.

    I knew Matt Kalil is a bust. I knew Chris Cook is a bust along with Cedric Griffin. None of these two are worth of our time to be our defenders. I have absoultely no idea why Spencer and Shawn were telling the whole word how great either Cedric or Chris Cook were when I am the only one standing saying, dude these two studs are the worst defense players and yet, you’ve found the truth of how horrible they are this year? LOL also Defensive Coordinator, Alan Williams and the play calling of Tampa 2 is out dated! We need a Hybrid Defense schemes that goes along with a 3-4. We need to play more man coverage. OC- Musgrave is the one who was supposed to be fired. Frazier should of used his defensive mind to stop the offense which it was our huge problem. It doesn’t matter what QB, none of any ELITE QB could run the system under Musgrave play calling. Even if we drafted another 1st round QB he is going to look like Ponder.

    Since Frazier is gone. I have no emotions whether it is good or bad. He tried is all I can say about him. I think we ought to give a chance to either Bevell or call Brian Behlilick the Raven’s Ex Coach, Vikings ex OC. We should call him and give him the key. Otherwise I can’t find any good coaches out there except maybe get college coaches like Florida State Fisher. Mike Zimmer is a great Defense Mind but remember we had Frazier? He was also a great Defense Mind but when it comes to Head Coaching, it appears the Defense Mind has wore out on them. Bevell would be the only one we could use him for a while. I’ll see you in Draft in April in further notice.

    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, BlueBird7 and the rest of you.

    @Larson Family,

    You made a good call on your prediction of Mike Zimmer being selected HC.

    We may already have the QBs we need, however we obviously need OLs, DLs, and DBs for any Head Coach to succeed.

  464. By Frederick Jones on Jan 26, 2014 | Reply

    @Bluebird7,

    I don’t particularily like Rick “Hollywood” Spielman as GM, but at least this time he is tied into who the HC is, and how he performs.

    I like Cassel as a QB, and actually think that Freeman could be a reliable backup.
    Joe Webb will never get a chance.

    Currently you must have two good QBs to succeed in the NFL. We have the WRs, TEs, and RBs (if Gerhart is signed). But the old bugaboo is the Offensive Line. We should replace three of those guys.

  465. By Frederick Jones on Feb 1, 2014 | Reply

    @Bluebird and Larson Family,

    Okay,

    Really we need all kinds of defensive players assuming that J. Allen will be gone. We probably need LBs the most.

    On offense we need OLs, but our organization seems too dense to figure that out!

  466. By Frederick Jones on Feb 9, 2014 | Reply

    @BlueBird, Larson Family, and Spencer,

    I asked the Vikings not to cut Cassel. They cut him and it seems unlikely that they will get him back.

    Probably.

    Certainly you must have two good QBs to contend in the NFL. How are we now going to get those two fellas?

    I’m not seeing it.

    But I’ll jump on the bandwagon if they can do it, of course.

    Now back to the Offensive Line, Defensive Line, Linebackers, and Defensive Backs.

    Of those four areas it would be defensive backs that we probably need least, but somehow we must keep the ones we have healthy.

    The game is played by the offensive and defensive lines. Surely Mike Zimmer knows that, but can he control Hollywood Spielman who does not have a clue?

  470. By LarsonFamily on Feb 18, 2014 | Reply

    Dear Minnesota Vikings GM:

    Why do we want another first round pick as a QB? Ponder is like Russell Wilson. He wasn’t even the MVP for the SUPERBOWL. Although it is what Ponder should be doing if the Vikings have what the Seahawks have. THE DEFENSE! Ponder and Wilson both brings at least 27.4 points a game and the only differences these two is that our Defense sucks while their Defense are on FIRE! Ponder is fine, we need to improve our DEFENSE big time. Not a couple, ALL OF THEM!

  471. By LarsonFamily on Feb 18, 2014 | Reply

    Do NOT DRAFT QB!!! Let Ponder play one more year as it is his 2nd year and see what he brings. If he continue to be the same as he was the last 2 years then we can start preparing for the QB we wants in 2015 class. Marcus Mariota is probably one of the best QB and we should be preparing for him. Unless Vikings wants to continue to run the ball then there is NO NEED to find QB when we already have Ponder that can do little things like Russell can do. If you want an elite QB like Tom Brady then release Adrian Peterson. The reason Patriots has an elite QB is because their offense are all based on PASSING plays and none of them has any objects to rely on running game. They focus on elite WRs, TEs, and massive OLINE that stands 350lbs at the max and hold Brady out for at least 15 seconds while Ponder holds up for at least 3.7 seconds! Think man! Even if we brings in another 1st round QB he will develop the same way Ponder will be because it is a Running Game!

  472. By LarsonFamily on Feb 18, 2014 | Reply

    Now supposed, we put Ponder in Seahawks. What would you think the outcome would be for Ponder? Do you know he is supposed to developed the same way Russell Wilson is? He wasn’t meant to be Tom Brady. He was meant to be Russell Wilson, Colin K. and few others.. These are called scrambling QB. It means they mostly relies on running game. They focus mostly on their RB which they used the most in game with the scramblers. Now you are forgetting something. They have an AMAZING defense, a DEFENSE I have never SEEN before, destroyed HALL OF FAMER Manning into T. Jackson!! IF we have that kind of DEFENSE like the SEAHAWKS, you would NEVER, NOT ONCE, say one bad names that will EVER pop up in your head about how HORRIBLE PONDER would be. We choosed to RUN the game and PONDER is the right FIT! Lets FOCUS on the DEFENSE SHALL WE!?!?

  473. By Frederick Jones on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

    +Larson Family,

    I agree that we should concentrate on the Offensive Line and Defense during the draft. Now that Cassel has been signed, and assuming most of the rest of the FAs will be signed, we are okay just building through the draft.

    We won’t win the SB this year doing that, but not many teams can go 5-10-1 and go to the SB the next year. I do not think we have the talent, and we would certainly need a Jared Allen to do it. How many Jared Allen’s are there?

    I do not see Ponder as our next QB. Perhaps he could be the guy after Cassel, but only if he improves …. A LOT!!!

    The game is played in the trenches.

    Joe Webb picked up by Carolina to play QB.

    Joe could be the next Kurt Warner, or if you don’t know Warner’s story, Webb could be the next “Rocky,” story.

    I have thought from the first days Joe Webb arrived at the MN Vikings camp that he was a victim of prejudice. It’s true that Joe spoke with southern flair, and also did not have the best English. But I don’t think he ever got a good shot at being a QB at MN or in college at UAB.

    That is sad, unfortunately for the Vikings, Joe Webb might be the next Superstar IN THIS LEAGUE!
