Ponders To Host Charity Celebrity Wiffleball Tournament

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 3, 2013 – 6:03 am

Arizona is a hotbed for baseball this time of year with several MLB teams holding their spring training workouts in the sun-splashed, winter getaway state. While spring training will have long ended and baseball’s regular season will be in full swing, the sport of baseball (in an alternative form) will still be alive in the Scottsdale area thanks to Christian and Samantha Ponder.

The newly-wed couple will host the The M.A.D. Wiffleball Classic, a charity celebrity wiffleball tournament that will benefit M.A.D. (Make A Difference) Ministries.

With Samantha (Steele) Ponder being joined by the Vikings QB as host, the inaugural M.A.D. Wiffleball Classic will be held on Sunday, April 14, at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Arizona. The event, which begins at 12:30 p.m. and concludes at 4:00 p.m., will consist of 24 teams of seven players, with celebrity players on each team. In addition to fielding the presenting Ponder Team, Christian and Samantha will be joined by a long list of family and celebrity friends, athletes, national broadcasters and entertainers.

So for any Minnesota snowbirds who’ve retreated to the Arizona desert or for any Vikings fans living in the area, it might be worth some time and effort to checkout this event. There is no admission fee to be a spectator, although donations will be accepted.  A Kids’ Zone play area and food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Click here for more information on the event.

M.A.D Ministries is a faith-based 501-C3 organization, founded by Samantha Ponder’s mother and father, Cindi and Jerry Steele. The volunteer-driven program provides college scholarships, housing, education, spiritual guidance and athletic training in inner city Phoenix, Zimbabwe, Palestine, Israel and soon, Minneapolis.

Antoine Winfield – DB – Free Agent Free agent CB Antoine Winfield is not expected to make a decision until next week.

Along with RT Andre Smith and DE John Abraham, Winfield is among the top free agents left on the market. The Redskins have been pushing to sign him despite bringing back DeAngelo Hall and the Vikings remain firmly in the mix. Both clubs will have to do some salary cap maneuvering to meet Winfield’s financial desires. Related: Redskins, Vikings

Lawmakers huddle up on Vikings stadium

    Associated Press

( The stadium bill included backup funding sources in the form of a Vikings-themed Minnesota Lottery game and a tax on luxury suites in the new stadium. But it’s not clear those two pieces alone could raise enough if revenue continues to lag at the current rate. Davnie said he believed lawmakers would have to consider delaying the August bond sale if they’re not confident that payments could be made without tapping the state’s general fund — even if it delays start of construction on the new stadium )

It’s one of the most famous of all conspiracy theories. The king knew that he would be long dead before they ever found the gold in California all the way on the other side of the continent, so it just didn’t make sense to keep sqabbling over the meager returns from the Eastern coast. But he couldn’t let his subjects believe that he just gave away claim to the new world, so he staged this big war and made sure to sacrifice just enough of his own troops to make it look like he did everything he could to maintain claim on America.

When we were in the red zone, not one receiver caught a TD against Winfield. Winfeild can still play in the Nickel at a high level. With teams throwing the ball so much these days, Windfeild would play a critical role.

16 week season. Star players are getting paid to much money. Baseball players play 100 something games a year, Basketball players play around 100 a year. Football has a small 16 week schedule. H3ll, one baseball players contract can be more then our salary cap for one season!!!!!!!!!!!!

  124. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

    Bob,
Also football is a “TEAM” sport. Chemistry is a huge thing. If a player dosen’t fit in you are not on the hook long term. Plus good players come in handy because of injuries, Blah, Blah, Blah. Ya it’s about the money.

  125. By vikingbob136 on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

    @Ponder all Day
I hear you. Football contracts are not guaranteed so why not give a guy 2 or 3 years. You could always release him.
Unless a guy is over 31 or 32 i would offer a multi year deal if i thought he would contribute. I guess i just don’t like renting a player for a year.I think that so much turnover doesn’t create any chemistry.IMA

  126. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

I do like that Honey Bader kid though. I hope he is on our radar. The kid can ball. He’s a playmaker!! He’s crafty, Nifty, instinctive, and his intangibles are more then you could ask for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  127. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

    Ya Bob,
I feel ya. I agree totally. The chemistry thing is huge in football. Unless you already know what you have in a player. And you could bring in a player like Simpson and evaluate him for year and go from there. I personally like what Speilman is doing. He has many tough choices coming ahead, but the draft looks to be unfolding nicely for us this year.

Chris Carter says the player he would take (WR position)is Keenan Allen.

Cater should know. If Carter say’s so then I would listen. The Woods kid (even though i haven’t seen a ton of him) seems to be a C. C. type player. If he is even in the ball park of CC it would be a great pick up.

We will draft a WR. It’s nice to know that the AP train will roll and Ponder is coming into his third year. If after the first round it looks like this; Jennings, Wright, Simpson, Patterson, Rudy, and Carlson, I will be more then happy.

But we have more draft picks and we will draft a WR or two unless we go FA, but the only way we go FA is if someone restructures their contract, other wise we stick to the board or release. I agree we will draft more than 1 WR

Vikings use 5 WRs on Gameday … here is what we got

1-Greg Jennings … minor concern for injuries otherwise he is a good starter
2-Jerome Simpson … Was a #3 for Cincy and did nothing for the Vikings … huge question mark
3-Jarius Wright … Showed potential as a Rookie and could be solid slot … still potential doesnt get you very far

4-Stephon Burton … Cant catch … should be cut
5-Greg Childs … Likely on the PUP list for beginning of season and should have no consideration in top 5
6-Chris Summers …Has good size but hasnt made a 53 man roster in 2 seasons. Not a viable option

So we may draft 3 WRs …

23- Allen/Hopkins/Patterson/Austin … would make me happy camper
    102-Aaron Dobson

Aaron Mellete in later round for insurance of injury or bust possibility

  147. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

All though we are thin, you have to love the fact that Jennings, Wright and Simpson that SPEED and are PLAYMAKERS that defenses have to account for. Mean while, AP is in the backfeild eyeing the “D” chomping at the bit for the word “GO”.

I am one that believes Ponder will deliver this year. But keep in mind!!!!!! We have a veteran QB, ( Matt Cassell)), that should be able to step in and find a WR at a drop of a dime. Speed kills.

  150. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

Our defense is sound with moving parts ( Griff for ALLEN, ect…) and because the passing game has become so advanced we are no longer needing the old thumping MLB. We can now get that in the middle rounds because it has speed with tackling ability, as long as we draft a DT in the first round. It always starts at the line.

  151. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

One Thing about that Honey Badger kid is, you can plug that fool in at corner, nickel , punt returner, or kick off returner and he will deliver. We need to draft this guy.

  153. By Parody on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

PAAD – I disagree. Our defense’s weakness the past few seasons has been the lack of a good ILB. For a while now, their downfall has been on the short to intermediate routes over the middle of the field. That’s the reason many of us feel uneasy when third and long situations arise, because we know all to well that a simple drop pass over the middle has all the chance in the world to cross the chains.

If we get a good ILB who can cover, that will sure up a lot of our defensive woes…much more than a big nasty DT would in my opinion.

“we are no longer needing the old thumping MLB. We can now get that in the middle rounds because it has speed with tackling ability, as long as we draft a DT in the first round. It always starts at the line.”

Sounds like you’re saying that we should wait to find our defensive leader until the 3rd or 4th round. I think that’s a bad idea. We have all the starters from the D-line returning, but we lost our starting ILB.

Both DT and ILB were weaknesses of the defense last year, but ILB was worse. So the fact that we’re down to last year’s backup at the position makes it even more of a glaring need.

A good D-line does little to help take away the option in the middle of the field for the QB. In most cases, that’s one of the first places he’s looking when he’s about to get sacked.

  162. By Parody on Apr 4, 2013 | Reply

We won’t upgrade the ILB spot if we wait until the middle rounds to get our starter. Guys fall to the middle rounds because they aren’t day-1 starters.

K Williams, F Evans, L Guion and C Ballard are all returning players for DT.

ILB? Audie Cole, Marvin Mitchèll, Larry Dean…I’m not sure if any of them even played the position last year. They were probably strictly special teamers.

DT would be a luxury pick. ILB is an immediate need! Take a guy who needs to learn a little for our DT in the middle rounds, and find our day-1 starter where we need a day-1 starter!

I don’t think so.Only Austin worthy of a first round selection.WRS.3-5 I LIKE THE BETTER ROUTE RUNNERS IN THIS DRAFT BETTER HANDS AND GET BETTER SEPARATION.SPEED DONT ALWAYS GET YOU SEPARATION.

Republican state Sen. Sean Nienow of Cambridge says he’ll introduce a bill that would delay the sale of bonds for a new Vikings stadium until a revenue stream to pay them off is secured.

Additional tax revenue from newly authorized electronic forms of charitable gaming, which was supposed to pay the state’s share of the stadium, is coming in much slower than anticipated, and the backup sources aren’t expected to be able to produce more than a few million dollars per year.

Nienow says he and Rep. Mary Franson, R-Alexandria, plan to introduce the bill next week.

The stadium bonds are expected to be sold in August, and groundbreaking is planned for this fall.

Michele Kelm-Helgen, chair of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, has said debt service payments of around $34 million per year would need to be made starting in 2014.

The state originally projected adding electronic charitable games would generate $35 million in taxes for the stadium project by the end of 2013. That projection was downgraded to $17 million in November and reduced to $1.7 million last month.

Nienow has previously called for an investigation and hearings on those projections.

Gov. Mark Dayton has counseled patience on the e-gaming revenues, saying it will take time for the games’ popularity to grow.

Add in his inability to go through his reads, his week arm, and his fragile body it is highly unlikely that he is our answer at QB. I’m not bashing the guy, I’m just being sensible and realistic.

I don`t see why so many want to sign Urlacher He was great at one time, but he`s slow and an injury risk. He has 1, maybe 2 years left at most. Ashadow of his former self. We have a chance to have a good team for a few years. The best way to do that is to go young. We can get a kickin` LB in the draft, pay him less, and have him for 5,7, maybe 9 years. Spielman will pass on Urlacher.

Urlacher could be good for a season or two to give leadership as we build our team– I guess Spielman might sign him if he can be brought in cheaply and the Vikes think we could contend this year– I guarantee you the Wilfs want to get to the Superbowl this season. Urlacher could have a year like favre in 2009– he has something to prove and could be a terror. I suspect Urlacher could really help us win against the Bears–

too slow-but, he knows the game so well he knows how to cut corners (urlacher) other players can learn from that.

9/3/12: Allen was fifth in the nation in punting last season, averaging 46.12 yards per kick. He won the 2011 Ray Guy Award over some excellent punters like Bryan Anger and Brad Wing. Allen led the nation with 39 punts downed inside the 20 and 22 punts downed inside the 10. He had a long punt of 72 yards.

Allen averaged 40.8 yards per punt in 2010. He did not play while being on the Oregon State football team the previous two seasons.

Antoine Winfield – DB – Free Agent The Vikings remain interested in re-signing free agent CB Antoine Winfield.
Minnesota released the veteran corner last month, but has maintained all along the door is open for his return. The Redskins have been fighting hard to bring Winfield aboard, but only have $669,000 in cap space. The Vikings have $4.4 million, and coach Leslie Frazier has made it clear he wants Winfield back. I predict Te’o goes in the middle to late second round…
    Around pick 48-62 range..

Oh, how I’ve allowed myself to be brainwashed. Every time I see someone suggest that Sylvester Williams would be a great first round pick, I cringe. I can think of no other reason for that reaction, other than the fact that I have spent way too much time playing the drat game: http://first-pick.com/Default.aspx

Every time I play, Sylvester is still available in the third round, and often is still there when the Vikings’ second 4th round pick arrives. After all my time playing that game, I just can’t help but think what a waste of a pick he would be in the first.

But the game also has ILB Kevin Minter rated much higher than any other source I’ve seen. While he’s deemed a high value pick at #23, and almost always gone by the time the Vikings are on the clock, I have trouble recalling seeing any other source suggest that he is a first round talent.

I guess what I’m trying to get at is that we shouldn’t allow ourselves to base our opinions on one obscure source. We need to look at as many sources as we can and try to accept that they are going to disagree with one another many times, and try to come to our own conclusions based off consideration for all the information we can find.

Still, I’m not in favor of getting a DT in the first. ILB, WR and CB should be higher priorities. If we can find players with first round value in those positions, they shouold receive precedence over a DT unless that DT is undeniably significantly better than the players at the other positions.

Vikings stadium: E-pulltabs may get marketing boost to help lagging revenue

( While the Democratic governor is calling for patience, Republican House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt of Crown said Friday that the stadium-finance issue must be resolved before the legislative session ends next month. )

( “If we don’t do something, the general fund is going to pay the debt service on these bonds,” Daudt said. “I’ve heard the Democrats say that they think we can wait until next session to deal with this. Frankly, that’s after we’ve incurred all this debt, so I think the taxpayers deserve an answer this session.” )

WRHopkins – I disagree. I recall a year ago when people were giddy about the potential to draft Te’o when the 2013 draft rolled around. That was when we were still projected to finish dead last in the division, and optimistic fans still figured we’d be drafting at pick 16.

At that time, getting Te’o at #16 was a far-fetched idea, because it seemed unlikely that he would get beyond the first 10 teams in the draft.

Now that he’s had a poor combine and some embarrassing media coverage, people think he will slide to the end of the second round. I don’t buy it. I think that his recent news is much less of a concern than some kid who gets in trouble drinking and doing drugs and breaking the law.

Te’o should be good value when our picks come around. The only concern I have is what I’ve heard about his pass-covering skills. If he can give us a significant improvement in that area over what we had last year, I think we should be all over this guy, but I have heard that his lack of speed will make that difficult. I haven’t seen him play, so I can’t make a judgment in this area. I just hope the coaches can make sure he can handle the responsibility.

    Parody….

    Feel free to like Te’o…

I just can’t believe that Spielman or Frazier would want to put their jobs in jeopardy…Replacing an explosive WR like Harvin…
With a slow LB with off field issues ???…

Brinkley has faster 40 combine numbers than Te’o…Brinkley is too slow to play in our defense…

This is Spielman’s year to prove Ponder is the Vikings future at QB….
    Spielman’s pick…

You need to open holes along the middle of the defensive front…For MLB’s to make plays…Right now- there are no holes for LB’s to make plays…
That’s why (imo) DT is the higher priority- over MLB…

Speed at LB is needed…Henderson can play ILB…
Sideline to sideline speed at LB is what the Vikings should be looking for…
A Brown and Sio Moore would be great fits for our Tampa 2 defense…
Brown and Moore can play OLB or ILB…
But both have speed and are hard hitters that tackle well…

I want players with versatility and speed at the LB position…

    Middle pressure…Get in Rodgers,Cutlers and Staffords face…
Te’o doesn’t have the speed to do that…

WRHopkins – Unless we change our defensive scheme, it won’t really matter who we put at ILB in terms of getting in the face of opposing QBs. Our defense rarely sends anyone after the QB except for the front-4 linemen.

As far as speed is concerned, the 40-time is very often misleading. It gives a good impression of straight-line speed over a long portion of the field, but not much else, so it shouldn’t be given a ton of importance for players outside of WRs and DBs.

In my opinion, better ratings of speed for the other positions are the cone and shuttle drills, which test an atheletes ability to change directions at high speeds. Te’o scored in the top-3 at his position for both drills.

One important aspect that I don’t believe has any measurable in the combine is a player’s reaction time – the time it takes for him to decide what he needs to do and then do it – which is something I’ve heard Te’o is very good with. Good reaction time can make up for deficiencies in physical abilities. Further, having football smarts in knowing where you need to be on the field helps this as well.

Te’o’s success in college suggests that he has these intagibles that are not accounted for in the combine. These are often more important than physical prowess, as they help in eliminating mistakes which allow them to be caught out of position.

Te’o did not have “off the field issues”. He got duped and embarrassment took the doop a little further. He was a leader in the locker room. He was the best defensive player on the best defense.

Drugs-DUI-domestic violence are “off the field issues”

Also WRH – Frazier will not be replacing Percy with a ILB. Jennings was part of a Percy replace. Jarius Wright was part of a Percy Replace and we should see another one at pick 23 or 25.

You know- as well as I do…

And the 3rd round pick next spring…Even the 7th rounder this season will draw some interest…

The Vikings needed a WR before they traded Harvin…And still need WR’s after signing Jennings…

Spielman’s reputation on the Harvin trade will be judged on what he gets in return on the players that Spielman drafts- from the picks he got in compensation for the Harvin trade…
Whether that is fair or not ???…The media could care less…

If Spielman grabs a LB to replace Harvin ???…I can hear the media and sports writers ridicule already…

Any kind of Te’o pick in the first round will draw too much scrutiny from the media…
Can’t you see the media is just waiting to make a huge deal out of a Te’o if he is drafted in the first round…And any team hat does …
Will be a complete media circus afterwards !!!…

I would think after Harvin situation…The last thing the Vikings would want…

WRH … So you’re suggesting if the Vikings take a WR at 23 they must take a WR at 25 so the media can have a comparison for Percy?

I think you are missing one key to this whole debate. W-I-N-N-I-N-G winning trumps all …. 4-0 without Percy to make the playoffs. Now there was also a subliminal message from last seasons draft- Jarius Wright was going to replace Percy one way or another.

Last season we played 16 games with 1 WR … Percy and Jarius never touched the field together. Now we have Jennings and Wright plus very likely a first round pick starting week 1.

One thing that is nice, is the fact that we are not completely ‘desperate’ to draft any ONE player. Our team as it sit’s look’s great. Of coarse we have needs and depth to add, but we basically have a playoff team in tact for next year. We have freedom in the draft which is a “GREAT thing. Ya know what I mean? Basically our whole team from last year is returning. Many of these players are first year players in our system that will continue to improve with experience.

I actually believe Henderson will be our “starting” MLB this coming season…

And that the Vikings will draft a LB that can play OLB (and) ILB hybrid…
    With a higher pick…

Then draft a more pure MLB position later in the middle rounds…

I would have liked Erin Henderson playing inside last season…
But Brinkley’s only fit was inside…

I think the scenario of the Vikings looking at ILB early…Is “smoke & Mirrors”…
I believe they are looking for a speedy OLB/MLB…That hits like a truck…

And a solid MLB later in round 4 or so…

    Just guessing ???…

  393. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 7, 2013 | Reply

That’s funny. I sent that 49er thought before I read yours. CaperDic has skills, “NO DOUBT”, but I think that’s what will get him in trouble. That’s what got RG3 in trouble. When they are “live” they let athletic ability take over. But there is someone in the NFL, (11 on defense) that have ability too. And they will be licking their chops to put the big hurt on Caperdic.

OTK – I think you give Seattle too little credit. They added a couple of big name DEs to their line, and brought in Percy. Those are additions to a team whose QB just finished a spectacular rookie year, and had one of the toughest defenses to begin with. As it stands right now, I expect Seattle and San Francisco to be battling for the division title all year, and whichever team of the two has a stronger post-season to go to the Super Bowl.

  396. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 7, 2013 | Reply

    Hop,
SO… Erin Henderson is a true MLB. If so, he may fit the bill. Is he arro-dynamic like his bro. Ha!! Would love to see it!!!

Vikes will trade up to pick T Austin, they have to cover the big loss of Harvin! Austin has really got some moves, fast to.

Arthur Brown and Sio Moore…Can play outside or inside…
They have been my favorites at LB since ???…Forever… :-)

  399. By Shawn on Apr 7, 2013 | Reply

Parody, Im thinking we would have to trade up in the 3rd to get him … which is possible otherwise depending on how round 1 falls- taking Mathieu with our 2nd would be ok with me. I dont see him lasting until 82. Likely in the mid 60s- Im guessing.

He seems to play a lot like Winfield. Small frame tackles like a LB.

Well, count me as one who really likes the idea of trading our first two picks with San Fran’s first 3. After that’s complete, I think we’d be in a perfect position to grab 1-WR (Hopkins, Allen & Hunter are all potential options here). 2-LB (If OTK’s plan is feasible, Brown and Moore could both be options, and Te’o is still viable), 3-DT (there should still be plenty of good options here), and 4-Honey Badger.

That would fill all the open and/or weak starting positions, and the rest of the picks can be used to add depth and potential starters for when the vets get too expensive, and stockpile future picks.

    @Titus,

The videos jones shared had a purpose!

There are some great QBs out there who may be able to fill our needs if Ponder-Webb are not able to get it done.

Plunkett-Morrall-Warner are just a few examples.

That is why jones still pushes the idea that Webb could be the QB that takes us to the title. Like Dilfer. Like Brunell almost did. Like Doug Williams.

There are more examples of QBs becoming successes after consistent failures than there are of QBs like Brett Favre who was basically good from day 1.

    (Even Favre had some doubters)

It’s completely crazy to give up on Ponder, Webb, or even the MBT this early in their careers.

To say Dante Culpepper or Tarvaris Jackson won’t come back is not out of the question. Know your football history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe trade the 102 and 83 to move up in the 3rd assuring Mathieu in the early 3rd while taking someone else at 52.

Dobson and Matheiu are ranked about the same spot … so it makes it difficult because I want both.

If Winfield sign with the seahawks, I think we should pick up Charles Woodson for a year. plays safety and nickle corner. I hate signing packers, but woodson has always been the most feared person on that defense imo. Woodson still has great range and tackles well, something we can use losing Winfield.

    Shawn,
I love the to see you fighting to get the Honey Badger, I think he will go in the bottom of the 2cd. But I think that is where The Vikes will take him. Speilman is all about the BPA.

Woodson is spectacular. Woodson is brilliant. If we could fit him into our system our “D” would kill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  417. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 7, 2013 | Reply

Woodson would have to play Nickle. And in that position he would be a HOM”er once again. Sanford is a “Pure” beast and is a stud.

  418. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Apr 7, 2013 | Reply

But I must say. We need a DT. I know that Williams is dealing with foot problems, and that is not something small. That is a pretty big deal. We can not sugar coat that fact. That is the most important thing we need to do. Get a DT.

Teo’s main concern at the combine was damage control(media interview). Talking to coaches who wanted to interview him. Spielman will use one of his 1st. round picks on middle linebacker. If Teo falls to one of our picks Spielman will draft him. If Geno falls to one of our picks, I think Spielman trades to Arizona for next yr #1, and this years #2& #3.

  420. By pondersucks07 on Apr 7, 2013 | Reply

If you cant afford Winfield. Then you don’t have the money for Woodson.

    @PonderAP,

This is the first jones has heard about K Williams’ foot problems. Why won’t they heal in the off season?

With Williams we have a strong 6 man rotation for the D Line.

Linebacker, and D Back are bigger concerns this year. The Vikings must be able to throw, and stop the throw!!! (Can’t say p@ss)

  425. By dryes on Apr 7, 2013 | Reply

the most important position on defense in a 4-3 scheme is middle linebacker. not dt, not cb. middle linebacker. period. and teo did well is a 3-4 scheme where he had half of the responsibility that he would in a 4-3, plus he is slower than brinkley, who couldn’t cover the middle. instincts won’t make him fast enough for our scheme in the NFL. i see a lot of great comments, but the delusion around middle linebacker has me baffled.

“Fortunately, this a good year to draft one,” said Singletary, who made it to the Hall of Fame as a middle linebacker with the Bears. “The kid at Kansas State, Arthur Brown, the kid at Notre Dame [Te'o], the kid at LSU [Kevin Minter], [Alec] Ogletree, there are a few guys that have good quality. It just depends on how it shakes out.”
