Fun Facts On New Vikings Jennings, Cassel

Posted by Mike Wobschall on March 15, 2013 – 7:42 pm

While the rest of us were winding down on Friday after a busy week of free agency, the Vikings front office was ramping up their effort to continue improving an already young and talented roster. Early Friday afternoon the Vikings finalized the signing of former Patriots and Chiefs QB Matt Cassel to beef up the competition at QB behind starter Christian Ponder.

It was the signing late on Friday afternoon that created the biggest buzz in the Vikings fan base, though, as the team completed its courtship of WR Greg Jennings by signing him to a contract. Jennings has been a thorn in the Vikings side since he entered the League in 2006 as a 2nd-round draft choice of the division rival Green Bay Packers, but now he’ll be a helping hand for a Vikings offense that looks to improve its passing game while maintaining its identity as a dominant, physical run-first group.

By now you’ve read up on both signings to get all the formal information. But here are some fun facts about your two newest Vikings…

– Caught Aaron Rodgers’ first career TD pass.
– Posted 68 receptions and 10 TDs in 15 games vs. the Vikings while helping Green Bay to an 11-4.
– Made an appearance on the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds, playing the role of a lab.

Matt Cassel
– Grew up in Northridge, CA where he helped lead his squad to the 1994 Little League World Series.
– Was selected in the 36th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft by Oakland.
– Teammates at USC with Ryan Kalil, older brother of Vikings LT Matt Kalil.
– Majored in communications at USC where he was roomed with Carson Palmer and Troy Polamalu.
– Married to Lauren, the couple has daughters Quinn and Ella.
– Backed up Brady on 2007 Patriots squad that went 16-0 in the regular season and played New York in Super Bowl.

Check out his stats from the last 3 times he’s played in the Metrodome:

    2012 – 8 Rec, 120 Yds, 2 TD.
    2011 – 7 Rec, 147 Yds, 1TD.
    2010 – 7 Rec, 152 Yds, 3TD.

I’d say playing in the Metrodome agrees with him.

Great signing, if we can get dubervil that would be huge, then draft a wr and db or corner and we will have a great shot at the SB. use the r st of this years picks to get more next year, we have to look for a replacement for Allen as he only has a couple years left and it would be good to have a replacement here for a year to learn a bit from him.

I have been a fans of the Vikings for 29 years and this is how they repay us? Keep nabbing Packers players to make it to the playoffs? Can’t we do it on our own than depending on the Packers? Sharpner, Favre, Longwell? Really? So are we really the Packers but pretending to be a Vikings? This is stupid.

Vikings are going to make the BIG names leaves.. I predict next year the big players that is going to leave is.. Kevin Willams, Jared Allen, Ponder, Adrian will possibly asked for a trade, Harrison Smith will ask for a trade, Chris Cook will not resign contract, Chad Greenway will probably hang up the team and leave to a better team that can win. That is what Vikings are good at, throwing in the Packers players in the team and make the rest of our players who are loyal to the Vikings LEAVE. Good Job Vikings, one of the dumbest team in NFL, no doubt.

    Larson,

That’s about the stupidest thing I’ve seen someone say.

WAHOO! Welcome Greg to the Vikings! And what I LOVE about the Vikings is it is about FAMILY! The Owners, the Coach, and the feeling of Family is real! I can say that as truth as I came over from another team that I thought was Family and it was not. I know that Football is a business…but there has to be a CORE of Family to make it work…as with any Family…and the Players have to feel that to be able to be successful. I can not WAIT for this season to start! Thank-you to the Owners and whoever made it possible for Greg to be here.

Larson is just mad we didnt get the no name guy but hey you have to no this is a pretty sweet move. Not solving it a long term but maybe in the draft we will get the long term answer and Jennings just to teach them and also he will help ponder and also to contribute to the vikings. can’t go wrong on this one. And don’t b silly they won’t those players won’t leave.

  28. By LarsonFamily on Mar 15, 2013 | Reply

Northwood-LOL you are one of the stupidest fans we’ve ever seen. Just because the medias said he is good doesn’t mean he is good The media is a joke and to tell you the truth Jennings is a JOKE! Simpson and Wright is MUCH better than Jennings. Jokes on YOU!

Remember how many times have I been right since I’ve been here?

Didn’t I tell you the Vikings will get 10-6?
Didn’t I tell you that the Vikings will release Cedric Griffin?
Didn’t I tell you that the Vikings plan on releasing Webb or trade him if he has any values?
Didn’t I tell you Ponder is our Franchise QB while you guys gave up on him?
Didn’t I tell you we need a decent WR and it is why Ponder didn’t do a good job of throwing the ball because there is no WR?
Didn’t I tell you Matt Kalil is a draft bust since he didn’t get the Pro Bowl? The only reason he got in because the Pro Bowl starter is injuried and they had to bring Matt in to sub the 2nd string. Matt Kalil is a bust.

Now I am telling you once again, Jennings is the worst free agent and we will not see playoffs for another year. I guarantee you will cry every single game and accused how horrible Ponder is when it is really not him, it is the same problem we’ve had the last few years, it is the WR. Jennings are not going to help us, he is going to make us HELPLESS!

Prediction records this year, 6 Wins 10 Loses. Packers GAINS our LOSS.

Joe Webb could be better than MBT, Ponder, or Cassel.
Answer jones this: Who can throw the ball hardest (WEBB)
Who can throw the ball longest? (MBT)
Who can run the fastest (WEBB)
Who has the most desire to be great?

Matt Kalil is a bust and just because he was in a Pro Bowl doesn’t mean he is worth a Pro Bowl. He was a (no choice but to put him) Pro Bowl player. About 13 LT starters were injured and Matt Kalil is the only 4 out of 16 that are not and they have to pick 4 LT out of 16. If you paid attention, Matt Kalil is like Charlie Johnson. I have another bad news for you, Matt Kalil will not stay with the Vikings for a long term. He is staying until his rookie contract is up and he will be GONE. Again, he is a bust.

  62. By Troutdaddy on Mar 15, 2013 | Reply

@Larsonfamily- I appreciate your insights, but again you are very short-sided in believing that Jennings was not a good pickup. He is a very good player and more importantly a leader in what he does. He is going to be great for the team.

@Fred- My friend- as much as I need to use paragraphs in my blogs, you need to quit swooning over Webb. Sorry, but he is not an NFL caliber QB and he could not out perform Ponder. He can run, but Ponder can scramble too and because Webb is not in the game plan, then there is no reason to keep trying to convince anyone of that. he is not going to get the chance at this time. Move on.

I like the guy, but you can’t back anything up because he has nothing to go on but his perception of his athleticism. He may have desire, but there is a reason they did not put him in games last year when Ponder did not produce. Let’s just hope that Cassel can be ready to answer the call if and when Ponder needs it. Joe sure didn’t do it…

You can call me crazy but at least I make sense. All the Fans wants was us to buy BIG NAMES off of the Free Agents. That’s all the fans wants, they get restless when the Vikings aren’t making the moves. Didn’t the Vikings tell us earlier that we are looking forward for Draft? We are growing, developing as a team. We don’t buy players to help us, it is hurting us. It tells our players they aren’t doing good job because they’re still young? It is like a big fork in their A$$. Its a bad move, now after this season we’re going to start seeing all the players leaving our team because of the “business” that has done to them. They used the word “business” so they don’t have to give heartfelt insult of what the GM has done to them. Jennings are going to shut us down just like Randy Moss did to us.

Ponder- To tell you the truth Jennings will not get over 1000 yards, he will not get more than 5 Tds. He will have the same stats as Michael Jenkins because by the time season starts, Coach Frazier will realized how good Jarius Wright is and they will put him in as WR number 1, and Austin or Hunter whoever we drafted as a number 2. Simpson and Jennings will be the one hoping they get a chance to play. Jarius Wright and Greg Childs are way better than Jennings. I am not surprised T.Austin or Hunter would take their spot.

This signing just made the vikings better. It will also be good for Wright and the WR draft pick(s) to learn from a proven veteran like Jennings. I am pumped about this signing.

I read for a living but you guys have huge advantage because when you kids were a little the words implanted in your head, the sounds that you remember over and over, the sentence structure that they used also implanted in your head as when you grow up. It becomes very easy to boost your writing languages than we do. I depends on hand signs and ASL does not fit the English. For example. In English, I am going to the store to get gas. In ASL. I Store Gas.

Robert- I understand you have a narrow mind. I understand you want a BIG PLAYERS off of Free Agent. To open your mind up and look at what I am trying to describe, Ponder is a Starter am I correct? Why spend 4 millions dollar back up QB, more than Ponder makes? Why not we get McCoy knowing he is 940k and a backup for Ponder? McCoy is still developing and he is still better than T. Jackson, Webb, Safenfals. Why can’t we make him as a back up for a cheap deal? Now back to Jordan Shipley, he hasn’t gotten the chance to play due to the injury he had in bowl game in College. He was off and on the injured reserve. Right now, he is perfectly healthy and ready to go. If Vikings sign him, it will be his first full season he gets to play and he will IMPRESS us. Also he will be 50 times cheaper than Jennings!

I hope Ponder has put in the time and effort to improve his game, because at the end of the season he was becoming much more consistent

Larsonfamily, what is your honest take on this Jennings signing? Forget about all the millions– I just read it may be up to 47 million! Yikes. But forget all that. Honestly, purely as a playmaker, I think this will help our team — it may be just what Ponder needs– a receiver who will not throw a tantrum at a young quarterback, but rather a class act who will help Ponder feel at ease– not just because Jennings can get the ball– but mentally and psychologically. This signing was a lot about Ponder–it is a true test to see if Ponder is our future.

i still think the vikes should also look at FA receiver Heyward Bey. 6’2″, 26 years old, and over the last couple years is becoming a solid receiver. If they can pick him up for a good price there would be value there for depth at WR and upside potential for possibly a #2.

All this said, I am just pumped about Jennings and excited for the draft and upcoming season.

  135. By LarsonFamily on Mar 15, 2013 | Reply

Titus- Do you want to know the answer? Let me tell you. I want to make things so realistic and simple for people to understand how the Football operations works. Do you know that it is our WR coach’s responsibility to teach WR to be successful? Did you know they developed Harvin and Wright, right? Harvin turned out to be a great WR didn’t he? How long did it took us to get Wright to be successful? Wait, did we just said he is successful now? Do you know that Wright is 99.9 percent DNA of Harvin’s skills and potentials? Since we got rid of Harvin because Wright is possibility IS a better WR than he is. Ok did you know Harvin was our number 1 WR? Since he is gone, and Wright is becoming Harvin but better, why can’t we put Wright in number 1 spot? Simpson reminds me of Jenkins, but he has little more potentials and speed than Jenkins. I would put Simpson to number 3 WR.

Draft is coming a month and obviously the Vikings are planning on drafting a 1st round WR. I assumed he would be number 2 WR competing with Simpson.

WE JUST BROUGHT JENNINGS and now are you SAYING WRIGHT is not good enough to make a number 1 SPOT? Wright is BETTER than HARVIN, and HARVIN is better than Jennings. We paid him over 50 millions plus 25 millions to put him on number 1 spot so he can teach our WR?

What did our WR do wrong? Wright is good!! Harvin? He is a beast!! Our WR Coach did wonderful job teaching them to be a great WR!

WE BROUGHT JENNINGS IN TO SAY F.YOU to WRIGHT?

I also don’t mind if the Vikes don’t draft T. Austin as a “replacement’ for Harvin.

A: T. Austin is no Harvin (Remember Harvin trucking DBs and sometimes LBs)

B: We have J. Wright (May not be as skilled but then again he doesn’t have to be, he just needs to be a solid slot receiver who can catch in traffic)

Also if you don’t have NFL Rewind you should get it. I’ve been rewatching the games from last year it’s friggin great.

  152. By LarsonFamily on Mar 15, 2013 | Reply

    To make it simple..

Harvin is gone. We got Wright and he plays like Harvin. Harvin was a number 1 WR. Wright plays like Harvin, he should be WR number 1.

We got Harvin for 1st Round, 7th Round. We saved 60 Millions.
Wright is like Harvin, he was drafted last year. Contract worth 940k a year.
Wright should be WR number 1 since he plays like Harvin.

Simpson used to play with Chad Johnson. How did you think Simpson got our attention? He was good and he learned that from Chad Johnson. We signed him lot less money for 2 millions at least I think, I am not accurate on prices on Simpson. He should be number WR 3. He is a back up for WR starters routine.

We will draft 1st round pick this spring and it is going to be WR.
Austin or Hunter will be a rookie and he will have to climb in the WR spot. I assume he will make it to WR number 2.

Now we bring in Jennings to teach our WRs? Did we forget we have Wright to begin with? Wright is a number 1 WR and we brought in Jennings to be a number 1 WR. Wright is better than Jennings, better than Harvin, and Simspon and he gets to have a number 3 WR? That’s a big F-U to him. I am not surprised he’ll leave after his contract is up just like Harvin.

We should of offered Browns 7th Round Pick for McCoy and have him get in as our backup. His contract is worth 940k a year for 2 years remaining. In this years draft I can see us bringing in 2 WR and Jennings will do alot to improve the game of all our young receivers. He isn’t a diva he has played for a team that knows how to throw the ball. He is a great leader unlike Percy. You say Kalil is a bust, he did make it to the pro bowl as a rookie. Kalil is young and he is a beast, how good was our O Line befor we drafted him? And I am sure A.P is ecstatic because that will open up some room for Adrian to gain yardage.
Now, the Vikings have to address their needs at linebacker, possibly signing Brian Urlacher, or in the draft plus secondary help since Antoine Winfield is gone, at least temporarily. Another young receiver in the draft such as one of the young kids from Cal or Baylor may be just what the doctor ordered!
Maybe a Revis or Woodson would look good in Vikings purple and yellow!

Tavon Austin is pretty shifty and fast. Mayock thinks the world of him, mayock is usually right. The one thing i notice about Tavon when i watch his highlights is that he knows how to get down or get out of bounds. I do respect the toughness of percy harvin, but with a small stature it is wise to know how to stay healthy, Tavon does this well. Would take him 23 if available maybe 25 if i knew indi was going to draft someone instead of trading the pick… Ryan #25 from Texas A&M ( cant say his last name for some reason) in the 2nd round. I Love this kids play.

    @LarsonFamily

Seriously, some of your posts are absolutely absurd.

“McCoy is better than Ponder….”— No he’s not. Simple as that. If you really think what you said is true than you simply don’t get it.

“Wright is BETTER than HARVIN…”— No he’s not. Simple as that. Again, if you honestly believe that then, yet again, you DON’T get it.

“I have been a fans of the Vikings for 29 years…” THEN YOU GO ON TO SAY. “i am a packers fan…”— Really? Really? You serious? You bicker about not getting respect from some people on here and you can’t understand why? You’re delusional and lost. Pathetic.

    THE INSULT CONTINUES….

“Kevin Willams, Jared Allen, Ponder, Adrian will possibly asked for a trade, Harrison Smith will ask for a trade, Chris Cook will not resign contract, Chad Greenway will probably hang up the team and leave to a better team that can win.”— Seriously? No comment is to be made here. This comment you said is laughable. Makes me really question what’s going on between that head of yours. Nothing I assume.

“Matt Kalil is a bust.”— HA! Calling you dumb would be a compliment at this point. (I’ll read that quote again….) HA! WOW! One word for YOU…. idiot.

“Jennings is the worst free agent.”— So you’re saying that Duke Calhoun is a better free agent? How about Courtney Roby? Sammy Stroughter? Oh wait… Vikings free agents? So Erin Henderson is a better free agent? Joe Berger is a better free agent? Yeah…. that’s what I thought. I’m almost feeling bad for your stupidity….. but I’m not. At this point your knowledge about the game is laughable.

THE JOKE, THAT IS THE LarsonFamily, CONTINUES…..

“Matt Kalil is like Charlie Johnson.”— Hmmm…. let’s see here. Kalil is 6’7”…. while Johnson is 6’4”. Kalil made it to the ProBowl regardless of how he made it… he made it. Johnson has never made it in any possible form or way. Kalil is in almost every way superior athletically than Johnson. Soooo yeah…. not like one another in any way. Your reputation continues to plummet.

“You can call me crazy but at least I make sense.”— Actually, you don’t make sense. Not close at all. Oh and I will also call you crazy… well… because you are.

HAD ENOUGH?! TOO BAD! YOUR FAILS CONTINUE….

“Greg Childs are way better than Jennings.”— Uhhh so exactly what has Greg Childs done in the season or even pre-season that would give you substance to that statement?….. hmmmmm……. oh I know… NOTHING! Could Childs eventually be better? I suppose it’s possible. To make that bold statement now is absolutely absurd. Childs has yet to step even close to a game field in the NFL. Again, one word for YOU…. idiot.

“Simpson is who he is and he is still better than Jennings.”— Won’t waste time here making fun of you. Moving on…

    AND FINALLY….

“I am very very INTELLIGENT, GENIUS, (whatever the big words) about football…. Please do not insult my intelligent.”— As you can see from all your previous posts, I can intelligently say that you are an idiot and don’t understand anything about football and feel like a genius saying it. Don’t insult your “intelligent”? (Ha ‘intelligence’ is the word you were supposed to use there… not “intelligent” lol) You’re right, I won’t insult your “intelligent” because you’re doing that all for me.

Hope every enjoyed the show here about the laughable, pathetic, and stupidity of LarsonFamily!

In fact, I buried you. It’s best for you to change your name on this site or never come back again because your reputation is completely demolished. By what I have read in your posts, I can confidently say that I have a much better elite football mind than you do and I can smash your pathetic logic. Best part is that you ruined your own reputation….. proof?…. everything I posted in my previous post about your idiotic statements is the proof. I’m with you. The signing of Jennings makes Austin a no brainer. I’m biased being a WVU fan but this kid is special and does not get hurt. No, he’s not going to run over you but unlike a lot of rookies, nfl speed wll not hinder his performance as a pro. With Jennings and Simpson on the outside, Austin will turn in to a great slot receiver if Ponder does his job. My only problem with Austin is he has been known to drop a ball or two. Like I said, I’m biased as a WV fan but for those that want a stronger guy look no further than Austins teammate Stedmon Bailey. Catches everything and has decent speed and will be a late 2nd or 3rd rounder. My WV sleeper as a very late or even walk on free agent – Ryan Nehlen. Same speed as Bailey in pro day but taller. Great hands. Nobody knows him because he had to play behind Austin and Bailey.

Colt McCoy played behind one of the better OLines of the league in Cleveland. If he could not get it done with them I don’t want him. Though Jordan Shipley would come a LOT cheaper doesn’t make him better talent wise than Greg Jennings. There is no question Jennings is the better player. This is coming from a Texas Longhorns fan and a Green Bay Packer hater.

  220. By Jeffbleedspurple on Mar 16, 2013 | Reply

Jennings is not better than Harvin, you put Harvin in front of a gun like Rodgers and leave the rest to your imagination. Jennings is a risky move only because he could have been a product of Rodgers and Favre. Time will tell if Jennings will be Ponderized. The Vikings will more than likely roster a whole heck of a lot of young WR’s and bringing in Jennings could be beneficial to the team.
As far as drafting two WO’s in the 1st round of the draft is crazy, the talent goes deep, 1st and 3rd round would be OK.
Sorry! I’m not as thrilled as most of you about the move, cheesehead!!! How long does it take for purple to wear off the stench of green and gold?

    GDP…

But again…Who does a Brown QB- have for his receivers ???…

I couln’t even think of one ??…Until I recognized a few names after looking them up…

Limited talent at WR does not help develop a young QB at all…
    Even with a good O-line…

I am not trying to make up excuses here…
But when it really comes down to brass tacks…

I would rather have a great WR core with a poor QB throwing the ball with a decent O-line…

Or a good QB with a poor O-line throwing to a good WR core…

Than a good QB waitng around to get hit with a good O-line…Waiting for a poor WR core to get open…

Because nobody is watching the receivers on any play…All eyes are watching the player who has the ball…And the time he has to throw it…

The Vikings are very close to having the offense all put together…

We have a GREAT running back with AP…
    Very solid O-line…(could still use a G)…
    TE position is solid…
    FB…very solid…Felton/Ellison…
QB…QB that knows the system…And can execute it well in my opinion…
And now we have a solid back up at the position in Cassel…
WR position was horrible last season…

Jennings and Wright together add depth and talent…
This springs draft at the WR position is key ???…

Be prepared to be stunned with joy- from this Vikings offense this season…

Defense needs an up grade at LB,CB, and DT…But the wonderful thing is ???
There should be several picks left in the draft to address those positions also…
Even if the Vikings take a few WR’s early in the draft…

Take 2 WR’s and a G early ???…That still leaves 9 picks that Spielman could use for the defense !!!… ;-)

Be happy people…There is a lot to look forward too in the coming weeks..

Personally I feel that this is a great signing and here are my reasons as to why:
    1. Jennings fills a huge hole on our roster. Sure it comes at a steep price with some risk involved, but with the risk also comes the potential reward.
    2. As posted earlier by a couple people, Jennings should help Ponder develop much like was seen by Reggie Wayne with Andrew Luck in Indy. Jennings is a class act and can show our other young receivers (and draft picks) the ropes, as he is an elite receiver when healthy.
    3. Rather than having a potential cancer in the locker room as our “Number 1 WR”, we now have an established veteran with some solid years left to help bolster our locker room for years to come.
    4. To sum it all up, I feel that this was arguably the best possible fit at the WR position for us in free agency. We did not have to spend the big money for Wallace or Percy, Welker….no thanks, Amendola….maybe but he brings the same risks as does Jennings and is slightly less proven, Victor Cruz would have been nice but he has a first round tender plus you then have to pay him, and as for the rest, they just don’t fill the need quite like Jennings does.

Good job Vikes for getting this done!

WRHopkins, Kalil was a no brainer last year, but I would be interested in your take on Hopkins. Didn’t see any Clemson football down here.

I looked at all the highlights on the top 5 WR’s, really liked Patterson, and Austin, but just looking at the highlights was not overly enamered with Hopkins or Keenen Allen.

It’s seemed like Hopkins went to the ground untouched alot after the catch. That’s ok in the endzone, but not on the field. I don’t no him so just an observation.

What are his strong points, and how do you see him in the line up with Jennings and Wright?

Titus – I must respectfully disagree with you. Second language or not, he still had exposure to it his entire life. I have known many people in my life who speak English as a second or third language. Some of them didn’t even have exposure to it until after puberty. Yet I cannot recall one of them who would make so many mistakes , spoken or written, as LarsonFamily does.

It appears to me that LarsonFamily is using his disability as a shield to hide behind, so that he always has an excuse for his failures instead of putting forth the effort to improve and show that he can write as well as, and in many cases better than the average American.

Hand somebody an excuse, and they will never improve. Hand them a challenge and they will realize their true potential. I challenge you LarsonFamily to improve your writing and show us that you will not allow your skills to be limited by a disability.

I honestly have to agree with Larson on the Jennings signing. I don’t like it at all. Not because of the money, but because Ponder is no Rogers. If you look at all the video and choke down some of the Packer games. Jennings and Rogers were almost always on the same page. They had chemistry on the field that made each other better. I don’t see that happening with Jennings and Ponder.

I honestly think the Vikings did just say f.u to wright, just like Larson had said in a couple of his post. Lets not forget that Vikings are well known for saying F.U to young talent before they really get a chance to show what they have on the field. example signing Farve said F.U to T. Jack and Webb signing Ponder said F.U to Webb. We didn’t lose the playoff game to the Packers last year because Webb was bad. We lost because he didn’t have the experience. I said this quote once before and I’ll say it again. Quote from one of the announcers, ” These WR of the Minnesota Vikings look like deer in headlights when the ball is coming their way. It’s like they are surprised that their number was called.”

Webb’s struggle wasn’t because he is a bad QB. It was because we are a run first team and are so behind the times in the NFL that we have become a one trick pony that everyone knows how to stop. I do not like the Jennings signing and I really do not like the Cassel signing either. Right now as the team is I see us 6-10 and last place in the division. If we draft exceptionally well then maybe we win two more games and be 8-8. However, with the Vikings track record I don’t see that happening.

  243. By Parody on Mar 16, 2013 | Reply

Titus – It’s still just an excuse, and excuses only convince us to be content with mediocrity. LarsonFamily is a self-proclaimed genius. Now, let me be clear on one thing: I do not agree with Larsonfamily’s appraisal of the Jennings trade and other content. I think Jennings is a great move– and Cassel is definitely a huge upgrade — it also shows that Frazier and Spielman are not going to blindly hang in there with players just because they are likeable- -Joe Webb. So, expect the same with Ponder– if after this year (and Jennings was mostly brought in to prove whether Ponder has it) Ponder struggles, we will move on.

@WRHopkins2013, I agree for the most part. The only time I would stray from that strategy is when you have a bonafide playmaker like Cordarelle Patterson. If he was available you have to take him for his ridiculous speed and playmaker potential, which I hear Rick Spielmen vehemently endorse as a priority for this team. I saw you have Tavon Austin as one of your complete WRs but we already have J Wright who is solely a slot receiver (the whole reason he was inactive the entire year until Harvin was on IR) and I see T Austin as a slot. That being said, T Austin is a ridiculous playmaker and someone you can’t pass up bc he can line up in the backfield, slot, outside for the screen game, and then special teams. Basically, if Cordarelle Patterson was available at our selection (which he won’t) I highly doubt Spielmen would pass at that opportunity, especially since he was apart of the Vikes when we took AP even with what seems to be a dependable starter in Chester Taylor and then he took the crazy athlete in Percy Harvin.

Other than Cordarelle, I agree with your position for who should and shouldn’t be first round draft picks (last think, it’s not as big of a deal as it used to be bc teams aren’t spending a fortune on 1st rders anymore so teams will take more chances on “potential” players).

As far as the censorship goes, I was as surprised as anyone that Swòpe was a censored word, so I looked into it, breaking it down into subparts until I found one that had an offensive slur in its definition.

It turns out that wòp is the word within this word that is the culprit. I found it described as a highly offensive term for an Italian person. Couple this with the blockage I learned of a while back of the word mîck (“a highly offensive term that deliberately insults somebody’s Irish origin”), and the lack of blockage of words like spic, cholo, coon and spook, and we see influence of a certain individual caring about protecting the site from derogatory language about his own backgrounds, while neglecting others.

In fact, this has the opposite effect from its intended purpose. I’d be surprised if any blogger was aware of these two racial slurs before blogging on Vikings.com. Now that we know, we are immeasurably more likely to use them and keep them alive rather than allowing them to disappear into a forgotten word of hate from a less-civilized history.

From Craig Rosenthal: Re Jennings signing.

“Going from Aaron Rodgers to Christian Ponder is like going from a BMW to a bus pass. Mike McCarthy to Bill Musgrave similarly is jolting. The Vikings had the worst passing game in football for a reason. That’s why Minnesota needed Jennings. That’s why it might not be so much fun for Jennings after a few seasons”.

  258. By Parody on Mar 16, 2013 | Reply

I must admit that I was definitely against the signing of Jennings, and still think that we gave him about $3 million per year more than we should have. But now that we have him and I’ve watched some interviews, it looks like he should be an overall upgrade to Percy. Maybe not in the realm of his own personal stats, but in the grand scheme of being a team player and making the offense better with his skills and intangibles.

Now that we have him for the long-term, I think that WR drops down to a 2nd/3rd round prospect. I really like the potential that Swôpe displays, and would be thrilled if we grabbed him. Then he can compete with Simpson and Childs for time on the other side of the field from Jennings, while Wright plays the slot.

That should be enough to complete our offensive needs, outside of getting another WR and one or two offensive linemen for depth.

    @sportzguy721…

    Yeah…

Patterson may well be the pick…I just prefer other options myself…I think Patterson is all hype…
Mel Kiper likes pushing personal player favorites early…
Then they drop like rocks before draft day…

When Kiper put up his first mock draft…I believe he had Patterson going in the top 8 picks….Now on ESPN’s top 32 board…I believe Patterson has dropped to 28th place…And I believe will fall out of the first round altogether by draft day ???…

Allen and Austin both have gained draft position since then…
    I think Austin will be a top 16 pick…
I think Hopkins makes his way into the late first round rankings by the time the draft rolls around…

People keep talking about a big, nasty reciever. How about Greg Childs? He’s 6-3 and 217lbs. Close to megatron size and should have learned the playbook after a year on the sideline.

    1. G Jennings
    2. 1st round pick
    3. J. Wright
    4. J Simpson
    5. G Childs

That could potentially be good. Childs has the size, Wright has the speed, Simpson has some athleticism, Jennings has the experience. We can draft the reciever with the most upside available, because we have two big guys (Childs, Simpson) on the outside and two recievers perhaps more fit in the slot (Jennings, Childs)…

Ponder will benefit greatly from Jennings, and he will still have Rudolph and AP to take some pressure of him. A good reciever and maybe a G, and our offense should be very competitive!

Then add an ILB, a CB, a DT and maybe a safety for the D.

Parody, we agree on Jennings– my same thoughts. I did not want to hear that name called every time I watched a Vikings game, haunted by cheese memories. But, remember when I said the Harvin injury would help Ponder because Ponder probably felt the strife and tension from Harvin? Well, Jennings brings a high skill set without all that garbage– and will only help Ponder. If Ponder does not significantly improve this year, then we have our answer at QB– we need to move on.

    1st round: WR
    1st round: ILB
    2nd round: DT
3rd round: CB (Honey Badger? Good returner as well)
    4th round: OL
    5th round: SS

Do we even need more than six picks? We could trade up BIG time and adress these positions within the first 3 rounds…

  264. By Parody on Mar 16, 2013 | Reply

The rest of the draft should be focused on improving the defense. Before Brinkley was off the team, ILB was our defense’s biggest weakness. Now that he’s gone, this position should unquestionably be the priority for us to fill in the first round.

The other first rounder and the third rounder should go to a CB and a DT. Although, if we take a DT, I think that means that we’ll be cutting one from the team as well, since 5-DTs seems far too many. Of Williams, Guion, Evans and Ballard, I think that Evans appears to be the odd man out. Guion and Ballard are younger and cheaper, while neither is as likely to have reached his peak as Evans is.

That fills in all of our needs for starting players. If drafted well, it will make for a significant upgrade from last year. Then I think that the team needs about 5 more players to complete the 53-man roster. That leaves us with 2 flex picks, that can be used for practice squad players, to move up in the draft, or to trade for picks in future years.

With the layout of the team right now, I’m hoping that Speilman adds more future picks so that we will be ready to replace aging veterans after their contracts expire. Williams and Allen, (among others) may be at the end of their tenure in MN. So it will be nice to know that we are prepared to draft new starters when their time comes.

This is the make or break season for Ponder. I think he will step up and prove why we drafted him in the first round. I think it was prudent to pick up Cassel, so that we have a valid back up to step into games when Ponder is hurt. I like Joe Webb’s motivation and his physical abilities, but he’s now taking up cap space and we have 2 first round picks to pay for. I think he will be cut soon. IMO

Parody- I don’t think that Larsonfamily’s hearing/speaking impairment excuses his abrasive and narrow-minded attitude. However, you are not imagining his valid reason for having difficulty with writing english. When we write, we hear the words in our mind, which we have learned from hearing others speak since birth. Since he has not had this experience, it is extremely difficult to form written statements. I agree that we can all overcome challenges by not using excuses and that we can always do better. Thing is, he has done just that. Few hearing-impaired people can write articulately. Frankly, what’s your excuse for not understanding his perspective? Lack of vision and compassion? I will repeat, he has no excuse for his attitude. What’s yours?

@DanishViking, there have been reports that Childs may not be back in time for the beginning of the season, possibly the entire season; I suppose two torn PCLs really is that much harder to recover from than just one leg. I want to tell you the exact site I read it on but I can’t remember but I know Leslie Frazier brought it up once and I believe it was at the Combine when he was interviewed by Paul Allen. Nevertheless, you’re right in that we have a beast in Greg Childs, it’s just all dependent on his ability to recover and come back with his speed he had back in college too (he tore his ACL in college too).

I want us to take a DT or poss MLB in the 1st rd and trade back and gain picks with our second pick and take the WR that Rick most covets. I think it would be good to gain a playmaker like Tavon Austin but like WRHopkins2013 stated, I highly doubt the Rams let him slip past them at #16 (he’s a huge upgrade over Danny Amendola, not dissing Amendola but it’s just true I believe). The only reason I’d think he could slip past 16 is if for some reason Kenny Vaccarro or possibly an interior linemen like Jonathan Cooper dropped to them at 16.

@WRHopkins2013, you’re right that he picks his favorites no doubt, but overall I still like Mel Kiper a lot. I want to maneuver in the draft in the 1st round like Spielmen has been known to do to gain additional picks but in the end, I trust what he’ll do bc he’s gone a good job thus far.

I do my best to display my critical thinking in all of my arguments. I admit when I am wrong, and will call myself out on it when I am the first to realize it.

I do not make excuses for my attitude, I embrace it with the knowledge that I am doing my best to understand the opposition before presenting my own position.

That’s why any high schooler can walk into McDonald’s and get a job on the spot. Conversely, I recall having read from numerous reputable sources that QBs take as long as 5-years to develop into reliable starters. Don’t throw in the towel so early…or to use an analogy consistant with your McDonald’s comparison, don’t take the McNuggets out of the fryer before the buzzer has sounded.

So as of now we need 5 … we have 2 with Simpson on a 1 year deal trying to keep him in the 4-5 slot would be ideal

    @Shawn,

You are correct in assuming that Frazier has a “type” of player. The jones believes that he likes the kind of player that will hand the ball to the official after a great play.

Then again Simpson, Webb, and Jared Allen do not appear to be that type of player.

But FJ Jones does not think they are excessive.

Shawn – I agree that we should draft 2-WRs. We just seem to disagree on how soon those drafts should occur. Many people are advocating for 2-early WRs, but I contend that it would be a mistake to take the second any sooner than the 4th-round. I am also leaning towards not taking a WR in the first.

We have multiple concerns that we need to address in this draft, and WR is only one of them. If we give the others too little consideration early on, we will be regretting it.

First thing I want to welcome Greg Jennings to the Vikes.Next @ the Larson Family you sound more like a bitter Packer fan then a Viking fan.If you were a true Viking, then you should know that bringing in a stud reciever from your main competition,is great for your team he was a Viking killer especially in the dome.He is a proven playmaker in the NFL,he may be 29 but he is far from washed up if you think that then your the idiot.
I hated to see Percy leave because he was a proven playmaker also with probably a more explosive reciever/returner,but he was unhappy in MINN.for whatever reason. He was also injury prone because he was so relentless, and the headaches. With that being said if Simpson can develope and catch the damm ball and Wright also and possibly get something out of Childs we should be in good shape.
Then I believe if we develope the middle and backend of our Defence, with our first 3 picks,LB,DB,and DT,we can be a Superbowl contender. We could pick up Dennard Robinson as a 3rd rounder as a playmaking Percy replacement,I believe he is a true playmaker.Recievers are so hard to find true NFL caliber guys, it’s hard to gamble on your first round picks. That’s why Greg Jennings is going to be special for the Vikings.

  354. By iaVIKE on Mar 16, 2013 | Reply

Sounds like DT is one of the deepest positions in this years draft, so I say the earliest we should take one would be 2nd or 3rd round. WR/CB/MLB in the first, if Rick doesn’t trade down.

    @Parody…

That is where our opinions are quite different…

I think the value is super at WR- late in round one…And drops off considerably after the middle of round two…

But that after S Floyd and Star Loufa(whatever)…The DT class all falls close together in rankings across the board…Starting late round one through rounds 4…

    LB’s the same way…J Jones,Ogletree, and A Brown being round one talent…
Then a “glut” of average talent rounds 2 through 4…
No one really standing out in that bunch…Even Te’o…
    I like Sio Moore as a big sleeper candidate…Then LB’s Klien,Bostic,etc…

CB has value through out…Pick your poison there…

WR talent is deep…I agree…But the “quality WR’s” are there late first round and early second for me…

    Wait on WR late ???…
I think the Vikings will get a lot of developmental projects…
And not a starter in the bunch…

Ponder is the 25 yr old starter who played extremely well when the Vikes started 5-2 AND AP only had one 100 yd game through the first six of those (for 102 yds specifically)

Cassel is the 31 yr old BACKUP brought in to take over Webb and compete with Macleod Bethel-Thompson

    Fred,

I feel if Spielmen really wanted competition he would have brought in Fitz from Buffalo. He wanted competition for the backup spot so he brought in the 31 yr old backup. He has had injuries which derailed him and had that 27td to 7 int year in 2010 (those stats are off the top of my head but I believe they’re accurate) but I still highly doubt Spielmen brought him in as competition with as much backing they have given Christian this past year. I really don’t want another Tarvaris Jackson tenure where every year we tell everyone he is our guy and then bring in guys and tell the media it’s a competition again; I never agreed with Brad Childress on that.

As for Joe Webb being ahead of MCT, to be completely honest, I don’t know. I think Webb is superior in athleticism but as a west coast qb….I doubt it. I can’t really argue bc I haven’t seen MCT really play but from what I’ve see of the superbly athletic Webb, push him to WR or we will have to cut him as I haven’t seen too much progression since we took him (as a project WR I might add) a couple years ago.

Lastly, if the vikes felt Webb could play WR I think they would have made the move already so only time will tell.

It was good debating folks, I’m out of here and heading to the gym.

Victor Cruz – WR – Giants ESPN New York reports the Rams and Vikings are not interested in restricted free agent Victor Cruz.
At the onset of free agency, there was chatter that both the Rams and Vikings could show interest in Cruz. It was never a realistic option due to the price of a new long-term contract and surrendering a first-round draft pick. The Vikings just signed Greg Jennings to a five-year, $47.5 million deal, and the Rams seem poised to move on with their younger receivers. Barring an extension with the Giants, Cruz will play under his $2.879 million tender in 2013

Really, Jennings over Harvin. You trade Harvin because you say you wanna get younger, WHAT. We all know that not to many Rockies start and I don’t see a a receiver out there that they’re going to take that will start. So you get rid of Harvin (25 and in his prime) and pick up Jennings (29 soon to be 30) who had Rogers throwing to him. Last time I checked we didn’t have anything remotely close.

    Interesting perspective.

I’m hoping for some healthy compet!tion at the QB position, and may the best player start.

We’ve got a nice start on a WR corps with Jennings, Wright, and Simpson. Remains to be seen if Aroma is resigned, but things may open up for him with other viable targets on the field.

Burton? Maybe swap spots with Summers and give him a chance.
Childs? Not likely. Coming back from bilateral Patellar tendon tears will be more of a miracle than AP’s recovery. IF he gets on the field, I won’t be able to watch him without holding my breath and cringing.

    T. Austin has me intrigued. Watching his HS highlight reel I was not impressed – not with his dancing, or his arrogant/coc ky play. The best thing he did was simply toss the ball back to the ref after he scored. But that was the HS reel. It’s pretty easy to be a stand-out at that level. His college highlights proved his talent carried over to the next level. HOWEVER, many college standouts have been NFL busts, and many average college players have become NFL stars. But do we NEED another RB this season? If we deal Toby for picks, yes.

Vikings LG Charlie Johnson has agreed to restructure his contract.
The new deal lowers Johnson’s base salary by $500,000 and reduces his 2013 cap number to $3.85 million. While it doesn’t give the Vikings much financial relief, it’s a necessary move after Johnson vastly underperformed last season. He could face competition for his starting job.

  501. By Shawn on Mar 16, 2013 | Reply

WRHop … I know nothing but Im sure(guessing) that redoing the CJohnson deal made the contract easier to cut him with less, maybe no damage. Vikings are good at that. Sometimes when you end a contract early it costs cap space for years after the cut.

It’s a good thing we have AP. To be completely honest I am not altogether sold on our offensive line. We run block great, but our pass protection is lacking to say the least. If we have injuries across the “O” line it will be another 2000 yard season for AP, but we will not make the grade for a SB run.

It is a far, far, far greater thing that jones tells you that Webb is better than the MBT product.

Bye the Bye…31 is not old, especially for a QB. We may see Cassel as the starter over Ponder. The reason they may have brought in Cassel is to see if he will push Ponder a little.

They have given up on Webb. (That is not a knock on Joe Webb. Many of us have rode the bench in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, when everyone knew we should be playing.)

Ponder AP – Austin is not the type of receiver we need. We have our slot guy in Wright. He showed last year that he has the skills to fill the position well. We just need a tall burner to line up across from Jennings and help draw defenders from the middle of the field so AP can shatter the record.

  547. By MO on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

Welcome Mr. Jennings! Now that we have a wr that we can depend on, but not saying we are solid in the offense, we can still use some depth on the O-Line. We have to look at the defense. Since Winfield is gone we need corner help. What are your thoughts about Mike Huff, corner/saftey. who was just released from Oakland a couple of days ago. He’s been in the league for 7 years so he should not be too expensive. His Career is 11 int, 365 solo tackels, 77 assist tackels, 5.5 sacks, and 1 return kick.

MO – I think the Vikings are done with free agency. Cook and Robinson are in the team’s plans for the long tern future at CB. I’m betting that the team will try to find 2 more corners in the draft to continue to emphasize youth.

I’d guess that the team will also drarft 2 WRs, 2 LBs and a DT, then use the other picks to trade around and set up future draft picks while filling in the depth chart.

Jennings turned down patriots offer. I am really starting to like this guy.

  553. By MO on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

Parody- They could be done with free agency. How reliable is cook to stay out of trouble off the field? Yes, Robinson is here for long term, should be a good player for us. Looking at last years team 44 players on the roster had 5 to 0 years of experience. Almost our whole team is youthful, which is a great thing so we can develop them. At the saftey spot we have 4 listed players, but not sure how they are going to pan out this year.

I would go with your thought on the draft. We have a surface level team as for the players. I think in 2 years our depth will start to show. Now we have a great reciever to help groom the incoming players in Jennings. Hopefully Cassell will help elevate Ponder to the next level. Cassell wasn’t that bad in NE and probally would have started there if Brady didn’t stay in NE. It is going to be an intresting draft that is for sure.

  554. By Parody on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

MO – You’re right that Cook has proven to be anything but reliable in that regard, but I really don’t see any room for another free agent. I’d be surprised even if Winfield got a new deal here. A CB in the first 3-rounds looks to be the most likely direction for Rick to choose, to have a guy ready to step in when Cook goes down, and who has some good potential as a future starter in some fashion.

  555. By MO on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

1vikingsfan- GB offered 8 million, NE offered 6 million, and we gave 9 million. He went were the money is, becuase he really wanted 15 million. I am glad he is here he can really help our WR development with the younger players. We should not have to worry about off field dilemmas with him either which is a good thing. Just hope he can hold out 5 years without injury.

What if like last year we take our 2cd and 4th rd picks to jump into the first RD. And let’s say that first round pick is at 24. Then we would have 3 first round picks in a row!!!!!!! 23, 24, and 25. Unlikely yes, but it would be cool if we did.

  563. By Ponder AP "ALL DAY" on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

I like arthur brown in the first. his size is a concern, but he would be great in nickle formations. If we can pick up a big DT as well, he would be my choice. Sw0pe will not be available in the late 3rd IMO. We would have to pick him in the second. Tavon Austin might be gone by 23 with the rams who have 2 picks in the first losing amendola and gibson.

RD#2- Johnthan Banks- CB or David Amerson -CB

RD#3- Justin Hunter – WR or Aaron Dobson – WR

I would love it If we took at DT and LB in the first RD. But only “IF” we believe those players are good enough to contribute their rookie season. If not, and the BPA is a OG and CB. I hope we take the players who will make the biggest impact. If the player can be a starter it improves the team significantly.

  576. By Parody on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

TampaVike -I like your picks, but they seem like they’re dependant on guys falling much further than they should. I’d be surprised if Hunter and Dobson aren’t drafted in the first half of the second round. If either of them is still there for us at pick 52, I think we should jump all over it.

  577. By Parody on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

Floyd is a top-5 selection, Richardson is a top-15. Chances are very low that either finds his way to 23.

Minter is right in the late first round value, so he could be a good pick.

Banks will be long gone by the time our 2nd round pick comes up, but Amerson just might make it.

The later picks look like they’re right about level with the guys’ draft value though.

Maybe a couple of my picks are wishful thinking but some players tend to fall in the draft, depending on what teams do in the FA market. I don’t think that both Floyd and Richardson will be gone by the time our first round pick comes. At least I hope not. If they both are gone, I think I will have to cry a little…LOL. I just hope we beef up our “D” before we get WR’s. After the Moss draft, picking a WR in the 1st round hasn’t worked out too well for us.

I only had us going 6-10 last year and maybe 8-8 if we played above our heads….BOY WAS I WRONG!! Just hope we continue to build thru the draft and be able to be even more competitive this season!!

Down here all I hear about is what the Bucs can to in the FA market and how much they will pay to be able to get Revis. I’m so sick of listening to that GARBAGE!! I try to point out that if picking the so called “allstars” from the FA market was so good, how come the Redskins or the Cowboys haven’t won a super bowl lately? I firmley believe in building thru the draft like Rick is doing. That is how the successful teams have done it to remain powerful for long term.

On a side note for all you Ponder haters out there…….A good O-line and good receivers make a marginal QB look great….Look at what it made Daunte Culpepper like!

Giving him an extension now may end up biting Speilman in the rear end.

The Bills and Jets made that exact same mistake in the past two seasons and now their both looking to replace their QBs.

Why would Harvin need revenge? He got what he wanted which is his big pay day and off a team that he no longer wanted to be apart of. So its a win-win situation for him.

I also disagree on extending Ponder this season– we have to see him this season before any new contract. I do believe, though, he will show a Tom Brady or Drew Brees level of play. I say we win 12 or 13 games this season. And yes, Jennings, is an improvement over Harvin– without a doubt.

There is more reasoning to my “madness”…

If Ponder has this very good season ???…I think he has just by using simple logic with the players that will surround him this season…
    Being a team sport…

I think the Vikings win the division this season…

The Packers have been saving pennies to pay Rodgers- what will be “hands down” the biggest QB contract on record !!!…That has been already been said within the rumor mills…

So if the Vikings win the division- and maybe beat the Packers twice also ???

What kind of money will the Vikings be willing to pay Ponder ???…
If they are the better team this season…And do well in the playoffs…

“High risk” would be paying Ponder a 120 million extension next spring…Just for being a game manager type QB (like Flacco) of a great team…

5-years at $65-70 million? That’s $13-14 million a year. How can Ponder be worth that much? We had the 31st ranked passing offense in the league. You can’t pay him like that just because the team found a way to win without him putting up big numbers.

The Jets made that mistake with Sanchez, but Sanchez led the team to the Championship game in his first two seasons, so one can see how the team fooled themselves.

Other than him, you only have proven QBs at the $13 million plus salary: Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, Tony Romo, Phil Rivers, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Matt Stafford, Eli Manning and Joe Flacco.

Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler, Matt Schaub and Matt Ryan aren’t even in that list! If Ponder shows this year that he deserves to be the starter, he should get something similar to Josh Freeman money, in the range of $10mil/year, unless he really lights things up and starts breaking NFL records.

As it stands right now, Ponder is worth maybe $6mil a year if he were to sign a new contract. With 2 years left on his contract, and seeing the moves that Speilman is making, he’s smart enough to avoid that. The 2013 team is going to be improved enough that Ponder should be able to convince the team he is worth a bigger investment.

If he can’t do it this year, he still has another year of leeway while the team finds and trains his replacement. Worst case scenario is that he’ll be getting contracts similar to what Cassel just signed to be a career backup, but the potential for something better is so much more.

  650. By Parkway on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

Ponder isn’t worth anymore than the contract he has right now

  651. By Shawn on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

Why discuss Ponders contract now? Ponder is a Viking for 1-3 more seasons. No matter how good or bad he is. If he throws for 4000 yards (LOL) and 35 TDs(LMAO) he has 2 years and if we need a Franchise tag.

Ponder hasnt even shown me he is an NFL starter yet. At this point he has built himself up to journeyman / career back up … but before placing final judgement on him I really want to see him with a solid WR core. Allen or Hopkins should complete that. So by week 8 I should have a good opinion of Ponder.

Dee jay – I have heard that the rules committee was considering that change this year. They are also planning on tweaking the tuck rule, so that the ref gets to decide if the QB was in the action of throwing the ball, or trying to pull it down and protect the ball, eliminating a lot of the bogus “incomplete pass” calls that have been called on plays that really were fumbles.

As far as I know, no decision has been made yet. Have you seen otherwise?

    All I am saying…

Wait until next spring…Remember my “outrageous” statements now- about paying Ponder ???…

If the Vikings do very well in the divivison this fall ??…Like I believe they will…
Ponder will be asking for a big pay raise…Way more than the numbers I wrote above…

Rodgers will get a big contract no matter how the Packers do…
Maybe 130+ million contract extension ???…

If the Vikings beat the Packers twice…And win the division…Go to the playoffs…

Who deserves more money in a contract extension…Rodgers or Ponder ???…

I have no problem having Ponder earn his contract !!…
But how do you pay Ponder next spring after earning that big contract..
And keep quality players paid around him- afterwards ???…

What has happened to the Ravens this spring ???…
After paying Flacco (a game manager QB) a 120+ million extention…

    Ask Reed,Kruger,Ellerbe,Boldin, etc ???…
    They can tell you….

the way AD runs and puts it on defenders, does anyone think that’s going to affect his running style? keep in mind DBs are not trying to face up on him and many often turn a little to embrace the contact. does that make them defenseless??

@Parody…this is my 1st time seeing this new rule on defenseless defenders. i heard about the tuck rule a couple of days ago. i’m glad they’re changing that…

  661. By Parody on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

Shawn – I hear you, and feel the same way. But to be fair, ball carriers had an unfair advantage the past few years when defenders were forced to keep their heads up while the ball carrier tried to bull rush through him. I think it’s better that they’re making a rule to stop all players from leading with their head rather than only defenders, but I really think the game was better off without the rule to begin with.

If these guys are worried about hurting themselves, they can make the decision required to avoid it. The NFL should just have them sign a waiver every year that they take responsibility on themselves for the results of their action, or inaction on the field. If they’re really concerned about it, they make their own choice: play differently, find a different profession, or man up and take the risk with that gigantic paycheck that it’s attached to.

  662. By dee jay born on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

OTK – Your Ravens comparison is overly extreme. Flacco has been to the playoffs every year of his career, has been playing well each of those years, and has more playoff wins than Peyton Manning. The contract is sick, but there are no other QBs who have done as much as Flacco did in his first 5-seasons.

The Rodgers comparison is just as bad. He has been an NFL MVP, a Super Bowl MVP and has led a very strong offense numerous years that had almost nothing for a running game. That speaks volumes about the value of your QB.

Ponder is not in their class, and even with one stellar year of play still wouldn’t be. The best he could compare to at the end of his rookie contract (statistically) is Jay Cutler, who is due just over $10million this year.

Flacco had a good streak of luck with his career…At the right time…
    Leading to a huge contract…

Flacco had 22 TDs – 10 ints ~ throwing this season throwing to Smith and Boldin…

He knows that it’s likely he’ll be worth a lot more after the end of the season, and the vast majority of NFL contracts aren’t renegotiated until the final year of the current contract has begun.

That’s just the way things go. So be happy that we’ll have more room for other players in 2013, and hope that Ponder’s skills improve enough that he’ll be able to compensate for the decrease in support he gets in exchange for a bigger payday.

Agreed, it’s funny all of the people against Harvin saying he just wanted the money, yet think Jennings really “wants to be here”.

Jennings knew it was going to be his last big contract and he was going to go to the highest bidder.

Not saying I’m not glad to have him or that he’s not a good player, but let’s be real.

  682. By Parody on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

49ers – I wouldn’t complain about it. I think it would be better to get value out of Gerhart and Webb now, than to have them just sit on the bench one last year and let their contracts expire. I just don’t think that player-for-player trades happen in the NFL anymore. It’s almost always a draft-pick trade these days. Draft picks are like currency to football teams.

  683. By Parody on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

Parkway and Robert – But even when we’re being real, we have to see that the Jennings deal seems to be the better option. We got him for cheaper than we would have for Percy, he seems to be much more of a team player, Jennings showed a desire to play here that Percy did not, and we got 3 draft picks out of the exchange, including a first rounder.

Overall, it sounds like a pretty good upgrade.

You have to take some hits during each game…To stay in game shape…

One or two plays a game…Sometimes none at all ???…

Parkway – That’s because these are human beings we’re comparing based on future potential. In that regard, SEEMS will always be a keyword, as you can never definitively know what the better option would have been.

In this instance, I have trouble believing that it could have played out better by keeping Percy here, than it is likely to go with the draft picks and Jennings instead. But we will never be able to go back and try the other option, so no matter how everything turns out, the results of any other option will never be anything more than conjecture.

Before signing him, the Vikings made it clear to Matt Cassel that he is not entering a competition with Christian Ponder.

Right or wrong, Vikings GM Rick Spielman is committed to Ponder as his franchise quarterback. Cassel is there only to provide experienced depth. “They went 10-6 and he is their starting quarterback,” Cassel said. “They said they’re looking to bring somebody in with experience … (and) be somebody who can step in if need be. The fact of the matter is, again, Christian is the starting quarterback.”

Have to respectfully disagree with you Parkway. Jennings came here for far more than the money– money alone should not, and rarely is, the deciding factor to choose a job.

If I have the choice between two jobs– one at 500K a year, and the other at 750K a year, the money would not be the deciding factor. Many other factors come into play— who is the boss (now I have an African American for coach), who am I working with (greatest running back of all time), what is the purpose of the organization I am with (is it a winning team), what is the surrounding environment (Green Bay vs Twin Cities– that is an easy one), what is at stake for my family (again, the city, the schools, the amenities of a large urban area vs a small city, etc), the desire of the organization to have me (am I going to be used sometimes or will I be wanted– will the team see me as vital?), what is the corporate culture ( is it hierarchical structure or casual/family style), etc, etc. etc. …

To say Jennings chose MN for a few million more, is short sighted. To be honest, once you have several million, if you are not dumb, you are set for life– if you respect it and are financially literate.

The Vikings have not expressed interest in free agent Brandon Lloyd since his Saturday release.
A Vikings-Lloyd union makes some sense on paper, but GM Rick Spielman may be wary of Lloyd’s manic behavior having a negative effect on Christian Ponder. The Vikings are set at two receiver spots with Greg Jennings outside and Jarius Wright in the slot. They may look to upgrade on Jerome Simpson in April’s draft.

  717. By WRHopkins2013 on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Greg Jennings received an offer worth $8 million annually from the Packers and a $6 million-a-year offer from the Patriots before signing with the Vikings for $9 million per season.
The report of a $10 million-a-year offer from Green Bay was erroneous, and possibly planted by the Packers to drive up Jennings’ price tag for division-rival Minnesota. Per the Journal-Sentinel, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin “isn’t particularly high” on Jennings, and Miami never made a significant offer. Jennings’ Vikings deal is for five years and $45 million, with $2.5 million more available in incentives.

    @robert knows ponder,

Finally someone is making some sense on here.

Perhaps if someone is a veteran QB they can play only one down like Webb did, and then dominate a playoff game. That is far-fetched.

On KFan they say that the Vikings tried to make Webb a throwing QB. Watch that first drive over again. THEY DID NOT THROW ONE SINGLE PASS!!!

That was an insult to any QB, except perhaps a rookie.

It is a credit to JOE that he’s not pulling a Harvin after that game. They insulted, and abused a budding young quarterback.

Heck let Kluwe take some snaps. At least we would be changing the flow of the game.

You cannot be prideful and expect to win IN THIS LEAGUE!

  731. By Frederick Jones on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

At this point jones sees the competition improving at QB. But is Cassel really better than Ponder?

It’s true that Cassel has proved he can play well with good teams (Patriots and then eventually 2 pretty good years with the Chiefs). Hopefully we have scouted better than most of the rest of the NFL on Cassel.

Fred still pushing that they shouldn’t discount Webb. I think they are wasting cap space keeping Webb at this point. Even if they move him to WR he would have to go through the learning curve of a new postion. I think it’s time to cut ties and see if he can catch on elsewhere.

  733. By Frederick Jones on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

Ponder does exercises to increase the strength of his throwing arm. If the O Line improves perhaps he’ll step into his throws more.

Some have recommended Joe Webb for TE or WR. The thing that one seldom seems to consider is that Joe wants to play quarterback. He is certainly capable of playing the position.

Perhaps he will get cut by the Vikings, then go to the CFL, or Arena Football, and be back in the league ala’ Kurt Warner in a few years.

Jones could handle that. Tarvaris Jackson could still arrive as a starting QB again in the NFL some day. Why not he has already started on two teams?

Vikings QBs never die, they just re-emerge with another team!

To all the people knocking Webb:
Joe Webb comes in after not throwing a pass or running the football ONCE this season, he came for 3 downs to kneel the football. In 2011, Joe Webb would’ve won the game in Detroit (playoff team) if it wasn’t for a missed face mask, he single-handedly beat Washington (the same game Peterson tore his ACL and Ponder got hurt) and if you see some of the highlights from the Bears game, you would wonder how this guy isn’t a starter (avoiding 3 sacks and throwing a 1st down). He is one of the most athletic players in the league currently. He has way too much potential to be sitting on the bench. If someone coached Joe Webb to throw a bit better, he would’ve succeeded, but if you don’t put the guy on the field once, he won’t. Most people would agree Webb is more athletic than Tim Tebow but, Tebow saw the field 17 times to Joe’s 1. Is it any wonder he couldn’t step in and do well. Coach Frazier could have at least put Joe Webb in during garbage time.

Of course he wasn’t ready they didn’t give him reps all season Let’s also remember, Joe Webb is one of only 3 Vikings rookies to win their first NFL game. The game is one cold conditions, on a Tuesday, against at the time, Superbowl favorite Eagles.

Webb didn’t win that game as much as our defense was dominant and put Vick in his place– Vick was so battered up, he could barely move near the end– and speaking of Winfield– he sacked, forced a fumble, recovered the fumble, and scored a TD on the same play– that was a thing of beauty.

Why didn’t Webb learn from one of the greatest QBs ever– the great Brett Favre?

  750. By Mike B. on Mar 17, 2013 | Reply

If Webb was the guy, we would have never drafted Ponder. Something the coaches are seeing is telling them Webb is only a #2 QB at best. He was an inexpensive option last year, but wasn’t ready in a critical game. This year he’s expendible when we got Cassel.

Webb has to take responsibility as an adult and a professional– if he looked so bad, well, that tells me he was not studying hard and working out these past three years– and finding a mentor. If it were me, I would be doing everything within possibilities to be ready for my chance– cause you don’t get many. He is earning a half million a year– I think he could find a personal trainer and a mentor during off seasons.
