Top 10 Free Agent Signings In Vikings History

Posted by Mike Wobschall on March 11, 2013 – 6:51 am

Free agency is about to begin and while we wait to see which players the Vikings sign this year, let’s take a look back at the best (modern) free agent signings in franchise history.

Here’s a list of the Top 10 (year signed), with honorable mentions at the bottom.

Let us know what you think by leaving your thoughts in the comments section below this entry…

10. Ben Leber (2006)
Leber is a great example of a free agent who provided his team with outstanding value relative to the contract he signed. A starter for 5 seasons at outside LB for the Vikings, Leber was an important part of defenses that ranked 1st against the run for 3 straight seasons (2006-08) and that helped the franchise capture back-to-back division titles in 2008-09 as well as an appearance in the NFC title game following the ‘09 season.

9. Jeff Christy (1993)
A 4th-round pick of the Phoenix Cardinals in 1992, Christy was eventually cut and missed that season. Phoenix’s trash was the Vikings treasure, as Christy played 7 seasons in Minnesota and was a key cog on an offensive line that in 1998 blocked for one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history. Christy was a 2-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler in Minnesota who started all 16 games of a season 5 times as a Viking.

8. Gary Anderson (1998)
In just 5 seasons with the Vikings, Anderson quickly climbed the franchise’s all-time scoring list and still ranks 6th. He had a perfect regular season in 1998, helping the Vikings to a 15-1 record. In 2000, Anderson surpassed the legendary George Blanda to become the NFL’s all-time leading scorer (he now ranks 2nd).

7. Darren Sharper (2005)
One of the most prolific ball-hawking safeties in the NFL, Sharper jumped state lines in 2005 and joined the Vikings for 4 productive seasons. During his Vikings career, Sharper was an All-Pro twice and he tallied 18 INTs and 3 TDs.

6. Pat Williams (2005)
One half of the famed “Williams Wall” that anchored a dominant Vikings run defense for half a decade, Williams finished his 14-year NFL career with 6 great seasons in Minnesota. The Vikings became the first team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to lead the NFL in rush defense, and Williams was a key contributor in that effort.

5. Randall Cunningham (1997)
Out of football for a year in 1996, Cunningham joined the Vikings in ‘97 and displayed no signs of rust. He enjoyed the greatest season of his career as a Viking in 1998, guiding the Vikings to a 15-1 regular season record with 34 TDs and only 10 INTs. Among QBs with 20+ starts, Cunningham has the 2nd-best winning percentage (.696) and his 34-TD campaign in ‘98 still ranks 2nd all-time in club history.

4. Ryan Longwell (2006)
As steady as the day is long, Longwell was a key part of 2 division winning teams during his 6 years with the Vikings and finished his career in Purple ranked 3rd in all-time scoring. Blair Walsh began to rewrite the Vikings record book for kickers, and much of what he’s rewritten only validates how productive Longwell was for the Vikings. Longwell ranks 1st in Vikings history with 9 game-winning FGs.

3. Steve Hutchinson (2006)
A member of the 50 Greatest Vikings team, Hutchinson was a dominant road-grading run blocker and sure-fire pass protector during his 6 seasons with the Vikings. Hutchinson earned 4 of his 7 career Pro Bowls with the Vikings, and he was an invaluable part of Vikings offenses that featured a 1,000-yard rusher in each of his seasons in Minnesota.

2. Brett Favre (2009)
After torturing the Vikings for 16 seasons as a member of the Packers, Favre joined the Purple in 2009 and had arguably his best season with 33 TDs and a passer rating of 107.2 while leading the Vikings to the NFC title game. Favre was the difference between a team that went 10-6/one-and-done in the playoffs following the 2008 season and a team that went 12-4 and was on the brink of a Super Bowl appearance.

1. Antoine Winfield (2004)
An easy selection at #1, Winfield has been the rare blue-chip signing who outperforms expectations. He has played in 119 games over 9 seasons with the Vikings and in 2010 was named to the 50 Greatest Vikings team. Twice he’s recorded a single-season team record for tackles by a CB (110) and he now holds the Vikings record for most fumble recoveries by a DB with 11 and ranks tied for 2nd in team history with 12 forced fumbles by a DB.  Winfield has also scored all 5 of his career touchdowns (2 FRs, 2 INTs, 1 blocked FG) as a Viking.

Honorable mention: Jerry Ball, Bernard Berrian, Greg Biekert, Corey Chavous, Jack Del Rio, Jerome Felton, Lance Johnstone, Fuad Reveiz, Visanthe Shiancoe, Chester Taylor

I think if the Vikings get a young WR in Free Agency, and a few first round draft picks for Percy we will be on our way to the SB.

The Vikings do not need superstars to be a super-bowl bound team. Just look at the Dallas Cow-Girls, all that stardom on their team with no achievement at all in the last few years. It is great to have one or two great players, though it is better to have team players then loners and individuals. AP is a uncommon thing for the NFL, he is a team player who is a superstar, and we need more like him. SKOL Vikings

I think we should resign Felton, Simpson, and Loadholt, if the price is right. I think then we look at the top WRs in FA and see if they fit our game plan. I think we also get a #2 QB in FA. We are going to need some depth at OG also with two in FA this year.

Jared was acquired via trade. he was franchised that season, but since we technically got him via trade, I didn’t put him on the list.

Definitely not a free agent signing, but the biggest mistake the Vikings made ever, was…under utilizing Herschel Walker. The Vikings would have won multiple Super Bowls had they used him like Dallas had. It is such a shame on what was supposed to be, SUPPOSED, to be the greatest trade in Vikings and potentially NFL history. I know it’s under new ownership since those days, but it’s like the Vikings are the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA. I was hoping they would move to California and become the Vikingos de Los Ángeles del este. But sadly it appears, much like In Colorado, that California is coming to us. Its sad the future of The state of Minnesota.

vikes will be fine if they work out harvins contract, and get five starters in draft or freeagents

  16. By Mike B. on Mar 11, 2013 | Reply

I am wondering though if Harvin wants to stay a Viking. Money is one thing, but you have to want to stay with a team. i am not sure that’s the case here. If wants to go better to deal him for some draft picks or an equivalent FA.

@PD- I agree with you 100% about Brad Johnson. he was a solid QB and had we done more with him then the Vikes could have possibly had a SB birth. Look what he did with Tampa after us? Favre was another great pickup and really should have got us to a winning dance. I give him mucho props for what he did. Not an easy thing to do either. Can’t believe Barrian got an honorable mention…. The guy was about as sure-handed as a two-year-old with a hammer….(That tells you how I felt about his play) Taylor and Shank definitely deserve to be mentioned. They played with heart.

Schefter reporting that we are in trade talks with Seattle to trade Harvin

  24. By WRHopkins2013 on Mar 11, 2013 | Reply

E S P N’s Ada m Sch efter reports the Vikings are “trying to trade” Percy Harvin, and are “in discussions” with the Seahawks.
Sch efter doesn’t name other teams, but says the Seahawks are “favored.” It’s a bombsh ell report that confirms months of rumors and innuendo. Among the most aggressive and unconventional teams in the league, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Seahawks have already offered a strong package for the gifted receiver. Harvin with Russell Wilson would be an impossibly dangerous duo.

I may have been wishful thinking now as this sounds like it is hitting the fan….

  29. By Mike B. on Mar 11, 2013 | Reply

We will see how that goes. Sid and Adam are agreeing that the Vikings are trying to move Harvin down the road. I guess that makes getting a WR in FA that much more of a need. It also confirms that the Vikings aren’t willing to deal with a prima donna type player.

  30. By PurplHaze on Mar 11, 2013 | Reply

If you’re gonna put Favre on that list, then you’d better add Longwell too.

Favre is where he is because he got us to the NFC Championship. I think it’s deserved. And if he’d have won us a Superbowl, I’d have really been rubbing it in with those Cheesehead fans. Favre was a he11 of a football player, and you can’t take that away from him.

Sad day my Vikings friends……….if all the Percy talk is true..atleast he is going to the Seahawks hopefully..unless this talk gives Spielman ammo with other teams.

I have a feeling I will wake up tomorrow or the next day and Mike Wallace is going to sign with us…

man was he (Harvin) electric and a joy to watch…literally everytime he got the ball I thought he was going all the way..I agree that we need to have good character guys but you always need that guy with a chip on his shoulder for one reason or another

I would rather have a guy that fights when he doesn’t agree with something. For example when he got put on IR he supposedly got heated again with Frazier. Don’t we want a player to do that?? To want to play this great game no matter what. I would absolutely rather have that than someones who says, “Yeah no problem coach, put me on IR, even though we are gonna make the playoffs.” Percy could have atleast helped Joe Webb a little.

I’m pleased with the trade. First like Mike B. says, you can’t make a player want to play for you. This allows the Vikes to be aggressive in Free Agency to try and get WR help, also opens up a million options in the draft, trade down, trade up, or even trade for another player.

I liked Percy and wish him well but at least Speilman did his job!!

And gain a second and third round pick for it…

And the thing is, the draft pick they get in the first round (#25) is just 3 spots lower than where Harvin was drafted at (#22). Sure, you never know what you will get, but still. With how we did last year in the draft still fresh in our minds, we can only have positive feelings on how this draft might go!

I’m still waiting for the Vikings to get up to date with their playbook. ” The NFL is a Passing League.” “The Vikings are a run first team.” “The Minnesota Vikings Wide Outs look surprise that the ball is even coming their way!” -playoff commentator 2012. This made me shake my head when I heard this. Then everyone was getting on Webb’s case because the Vikings FLOPPED big time against the Packers. Sorry it really wasn’t Webb’s fault. I blame the coaches, for that lost in the playoffs. I’m a little surprised that Frazier got even a short term contract, but we are talking about the Vikings…shoot every Minnesota Team has been making some really really questionable decisions as of late.

yeah we had the short passing game with Harvin but we are a Run AP up the middle first team. My point is that “everyone” is saying that the NFL is a Passing League. The Vikings are focusing on the wrong things. Just like the Twins have been the last who knows how many season. Just like the T-wolves since the KG trade, and just like the Wild have. Although out of those four teams the Wild are actually doing good with what they have. All in all the Vikings have a huge void at QB and WR that they have needed to fill since Randy Moss departed ways with us for the WR and since dare I say it Cunningham in ’98

We will have a great draft and I’m excited about the thought of what Spielman can do with this extra ammo.

I didn’t want to pay Percy the type of money he wanted no way. Would have much rather traded him and spead the talent amongst the team like Spielman did! Great TRADE!

@iavike…. I laughed out loud at your Deertracks comment…. On a serious note, With Harvin going to the Seahawks, it is going to be interesting to see how he gels there. Our toughest games this year were the last 4 we played and we won them WITHOUT Percy. You can’t tell me that without Harvin we don’t have what it takes. We do, but we have got to fill the gaps and we can and will do that. Spielman has stuff cooking on the burner and rest assured he is going to work his magic. Seattle has taken our left overs (WR’s especially) 3 times now and most of them were on IR for a lot of their time… Percy could continue that trend… Wallace is Rumored to be going to Miami, but who knows, now that Harvin is off the ship, we could see some finegeling occur. I doubt it, but I am going to look forward to what shakes out his week. I gotta go buy a Peterson Jersey… One I canwear for more than 6 months…… Pffff….

Harvin was trouble before he got paid…

All Harvin had to do to make big bucks in Minnesota was to play football and keep his mouth shut…

He couldn’t do that…He can not stop shooting his mouth off…It’s been a problem with him with every coach since high school…

Paying Harvin is not going to help that scenario one bit…He will only be harder to contro down the linel…Sure he will be a good boy his first year in Seattle with a big fat billfold full of money !!!…But that won’t last long…
Second year things with his attitude will show up…But Seattle will put up with their franchise diva…
By year 3…Harvin will start to be a bigger pain and want more money…

    from Greg Rosenthahl:

    More pressure on Christian Ponder

The Vikings have tried to spin Ponder’s struggles, but his lack of development last season should be the organization’s biggest concern. Perhaps the team believes that Harvin was going to be a distraction, but removing Harvin only makes Ponder’s life tougher. There is a solid offensive line in place, not to mention MVP Adrian Peterson. Kyle Rudolph is a great long-term answer at tight end. But Ponder is going to have to win with new weapons out wide. That’s not easy.

While the team publicly has stayed committed to Ponder, don’t be surprised if they bring in a strong backup quarterback like Matt Cassel in case Ponder struggles again this season. Trading Harvin certainly won’t make Ponder’s job easier

In Ponder’s defense, He had some brilliant games. He is young and was able to get us to the playoffs. Yeah- he had some struggles, but for what he did with the people he had shows that at least he is willing to run the plan and give it his all- regardless of how we the fans feel about him. He ran the plays designed by the OC and he took a lot of criticism but still came back every week and pounded it out like a rookie should. Give him a little credit. Tom Brady he is not, but he is really only a year into his career as a starter and as much as people want him to be amazing formthe git-go, he must be allowed to develop and have some growing pains. AND- if he takes too long to develop, then Spielman can take ownership of his decisions and make changes. I for one would love to see Ponder succeed and get it together. He needs some weapons who can help him to do that. So, keep your fingers crossed that those gaps can be filled. I am done being a whinner and am really focussing my efforts on looking ahead. I am only a fan- grasping at all I can to keep my passion for the Vikes moving forward… I sure as heck do not want to end up like Packer or Cowboy fans… Nuf said…

You guys believe the media…That we HAVE to get a veteran receiver to win ???

Thats what they said about the QB position too…When Frazier got duped in bringing in McNabb…

We don’t need a big name veteran receiver…

The draft is chuck full of quality receivers…Young and fast…All receivers need to learn a new system….

  363. By Alex on Mar 11, 2013 | Reply

We need to keep the first round pick we got from seattle and draft best players available in the draft. We have a huge amount of cap space now that we don’t have to sign harvin which i mentioned would be the only reason I would ever trade him a few weeks ago.
I would love to see us draft Justin Hunter but not if better players are still on the board.
Wouldn’t mind seeing a trade to get maybe a third first round pick to really get some top level players to the team this year. If this years draft goes well this team will be stacked for years to come and we have the cap space to sign everyone we draft now as well.

Sure is a lot of bloggers down on the Vikings, after the Harvin trade. I say take a deep breath and rewind to one year ago.

Coming off a 3-13 season, many thinking we would be at best 8-8 in 2012. Look what happened, we picked up some good talent in th draft, some young players stepped up and AP returned as a beast.

Harvin was great, and my favorite player, but don’t forget we won the last 4 games without him against some pretty good teams.

This team right now as we are going into FA and the draft is ten times better off than last year this time. I think we are in a position to make major strides in 2013,and I believe we will be a SB contender in 2013.

We have more options in FA, and draft and if Speilman, pulls the right strings, I think you’ll be more pumped in September than in along time.

Could we be in the market for V. Cruz or Revis? Both would most likely require 1st rounder and now that the Viking have an extra one it could make a move for one of them.

But, Ponder did show promise this season at the start and the finish.

1stA: WR, Tavon Austin, West Virginia
    1stB: WR, Justin Hunter, Tennessee
2nd: CB, David Amerson, N.C. State
3rd: DT, Brandon Williams, Missouri Southern
    4thA: OG, Justin Pugh, Syracuse
    4thB: CB, Tyrann Mathieu, LSU
    5th: LB, Zaviar Gooden, Missouri
6th: WR, Marquess Wilson, Washington St.
7thA: LB, Jordan Campbell, New Mexico Highlands
    7thB: RB, Rex Burkhead, Nebraska
7thC: S, Kemal Ishmael, Central Florida

I would be absolutely over joyed if this was how the draft played out! Crossing my fingers.

The NFL Draft couldn’t come soon enough!

Kevin Williams should worry about his own position. IMO he’s been an over paid
past his prime underacheiver the last two years.

Don’t get me wrong he was a great at one time, just not now. I’d send him packing and get some younger talent at DT.

Don’t get me wrong, I love his talent, but he wants to be the highest paid defender in history… coming off an ACL. I don’t think he’s worth it. When a team has as many holes as ours has, spending huge jack on a CB doesn’t make sense.

If teo falls down to Vikings at 23 or 25, I would take him. Wasn’t very impressive at the combine but I think that’s because he was hyped up to be this fast and and super athletic LB. Turns out he is not as fast and athletic as everyone thought. What he does possess are great instincts and awareness. He didn’t become a candidate for the Heisman by accident. Aside from his 40 yd dash at the combine, his performance in every other drill was ok. He had a very good year with the exception of the bowl game where he missed tackles. That can be corrected and fixed but when it comes to having instincts and awareness on the field, either you have them or you don’t. I think he will be an outstanding LB in the NFL. Jasper Brinkley is NOT the answer at MLB. I also think it is ridiculous how much criticism Teo has received because of the fake girlfriend incident. I could honestly care less.

Sorry to see Harvin go! I got to admit I really was fooled that all the Harvin talk was a stunt for a bigger contract, but he really did want out. Nothing the organization could do but to deal this malcontent. Hope he continues his health track record. Its weird that Seattle has both Syndney Rice also not a very good health track record either. I really hope we don’t get Jennings as a replacement, Good Luck Vikes hope to make a big splash at the draft and a more common sense free agent receiver.

i don’t see the Vikings doing better than 9-7 even with great FA pickups and great draft. Green Bay will continue to dominate the division with a top 5 qb while we are stuck with a 48th ranked qb. why send 2 receivers,a tight end and maybe a running back out on pass patterns when Ponder is only going to make one read? the only loses san fran and seattle will have is when they play each other

  617. By GrandDaddyPurp on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

Geoff Schwartz wouldnt be a bad replacement.

“He rotated in 160 snaps for the Vikings in 2012, receiving a grade of 5.8. That grade calculated over the entire 1,116 snaps the Vikings had last season adds up to 40.56. That would’ve been the second-highest grade of any guard this past season. Why he rotated is a little bit of a mystery, but there is significant evidence suggesting he is one of the better guards in the NFL.

Although he’s graded out as a better run-blocker than pass-blocker, Schwartz has allowed one hurry every 41 snaps over his time with the Panthers and Vikings.”

He has played Tackle before in Carolina. If he can stay healthy like he did this past season he could be a really good player for us on the OLine.

That’s the dumbest reason in the history of trades..Do you think Brady would want his best receiver gone…no he stands up for them..Ponder is acting like a scared pu$$y…hasn’t even said a peep about anything atleast AP did cause he has b.all.s.

He filled in when the vikes went on their run to make the playoffs last year. Greg Jennings would be a great addition. He is still young enough to have a couple good years in the tank and the young receivers could learn from him. Jennings, WR draft pick, Wright in the slot. Wouldn’t be so bad. Because after this coming season…AP will have to restructure his 100 million dollar contract at some point soon…So we can afford him under the cap space…

So if the passing game fails to find more balance this season…And AP runs for another 2000 yards…AP will most likely not restructure anything…And want more money to restructure a new contract ???…And who would pay a RB that kind of money…With that many miles on his body already ???..Even AP…

BALANCE through out the team is crucial…
It keeps players from getting greedy like Harvin…

Jones is upset because the O Line may be ignored by the Vikings. However we do have greater needs now. We can’t hide the fact we are looking for a posse of wide outs any more. LB and DT come before the O Line.

No one seems to realize how LUCKY we were to avoid injury last year. What would have happened if we had 2 or 3 injuries at the same time to the O Line last year? Can you say 4-12 or 3-13? How about 3.5 yards per carry by A.D.?

  721. By Frederick Jones on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

At least one of the draft picks better be for a Guard. We need quality depth in the case of injury. The year Green Bay last won the Super Bowl they had significant injuries to the O Line. They happened to have quality backups.

This is an area the good teams do not ignore Coach Frazier!!!

Do you ever notice how teams are rarely negative about thier O Line? There are bad O Lines! But to rip guys that are playing such an unglamourous position were there is very little gratitude would be wrong.

That is one reason why Jones is not sold by the comments made recently that the Vikings have a “solid offensive line.”

Fred all i can do is wait.

We weren’t that lucky. If Jarius Wright had been healthy to start the season maybe our passing game doesnt look so bad and Percy doesnt flip out? Same with Jerome Simpson he could not stay healthy.

If Cook had not gotten injured right when our D was starting to click and Winfield stayed healthy maybe Rodgers and Cutler dont pick our D apart so easily.

Then there is Ponder. Oh boy just when you might start to believe he is our QB of the future he misses the most important game of the season.

i do agree we were lucky our OLine stayed healthy but we were not so lucky in other areas.

When the Seahawks struck a deal on Monday for receiver Percy Harvin, receiver Golden Tate sounded a little concerned.

But the guy who should be the most concerned could be receiver Sidney Rice.

Due to earn a base salary of $8.5 million in 2013, the receiver budget may not be able to bear both Harvin and Rice, who were teammates in Minnesota from 2009 through 2010.

But Rice has had limited effectiveness in Seattle, with only 748 receiving yards in 16 starts last season. The year before, he missed seven games due to injury.

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Rice has $3.6 million remaining in signing bonus proration, and $3.5 million of his base salary is guaranteed for injury only. Thus, cutting him would create nearly $5 million in 2013 cap space.

Percy Harvin is officially a Seahawk. And the full trade terms are now known.

The Vikings have announced the deal, which will send a first-round pick (25th overall) to Minnesota, a seventh-round pick in 2013, and a third-rounder in 2014.

Previously, the 2014 pick was not yet known, described generally as a mid-round pick.

    That mid-round pick is a third-rounder.

no I’m not going to calm down. This team is already looking pathetic. Defense has just gotten a heck of a lot weaker. The receiver core is a tire fire. (if you say Jennings will help fix the problem, just stop right there, because there is no way, he deserves 12+ million a year. which is what he will only settle for.) Outside of him, there is nobody that is worth big money or worth a 1st round pick. They aren’t going to get Revis, like some rumors I was hearing earlier today. We don’t need all the big names but we have cap space. We do need to get some type of veteran on the team. Even MVPeterson knows this. The team does still need help other than rookies. Well, I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who is disgusted by all the whining in here.

The team has concerns right now, and they just added to those concerns today by cutting Winfield. But give Spielman some credit. He put together a great plan last off-season, and turned a team that was supposed to be the worst in the league into a playoff team.

Did everyone freak out so much last year when we cut both of our starting guards? Hutchinson was one of the best guards we ever had, but we cut him loose and still found a way to win. Let’s wait until after the draft and see how the team levels out.

An NFL source tells the Green Bay Press-Gazette free agent Greg Jennings could return to the Packers if he hasn’t signed with another team by midnight Wednesday.
It implies Jennings has a standing offer from the Packers, one he might take if no one betters it over the next six hours. It would be a thudding end to free agency for a player who’s spent weeks publicly pumping up his stock, but perhaps best for all involved.

I’m not sure why some of you think we will fail this upcoming year we have a strong team that is young. We got draft picks for a player who wasn’t going to resign with us and we have a gm who had an amazing draft last year. If he gets another strong draft this year we will be stacked for years to come. We may lack at the Wr position and it may hurt Ponder but the rest of the team is strong and young and we have a ton of cap space right now.

I do think we need to get a wr in free agency who is a new face but not signing Wallace was the right move. I have mixed feelings about Jennings but having a vet Wr would be good if we draft 2 or more Wr’s. Actually having a veteran Wr will be good period.

Profootballtalk.com reports Percy Harvin’s new Seahawks deal is worth $67 million over six seasons, with only $14.5 million fully guaranteed.Another $11 million is guaranteed for injury, but this is a smaller deal than Harvin was probably expecting. It’s actually worth just slightly less than Dwayne Bowe’s in annual average, making Harvin — for now — the NFL’s fifth highest paid receiver behind Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Mike Wallace, and Bowe. And the low guaranteed total protects the Seahawks. Seattle gave up a draft-pick haul for Harvin, but this looks like a great deal for the club. Mar 12 – 7:35 PM

Recently, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the Packers, Falcons, and Broncos were all showing strong interest in Jackson. Green Bay has the most salary cap space of that group, and Packers GM Ted Thompson is a longtime admirer of S-Jax. We’d anticipate a deal worth something like $12 million across three seasons. Jackson is going on age 30, but has juice left in the tank.

A source tells ESPN Milwaukee’s Jason Wilde that the Packers previously made free agent Greg Jennings a $10M per year offer.

If true, it’s shocking. The Packers were thought to have moved on from Jennings, instead focusing on a very capable receiving trio of Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson and James Jones. This news suggests that they are very open to bringing Jennings back. It’s unlikely he’ll fetch more than $10M per year on the open market — even from a receiver-needy team like the Vikings.

So what do you get for a 134-tackle season?

    You get cut.

That’s what the Dolphins are doing to veteran Karlos Dansby, per a league source with knowledge of the situatuon.

Dansby signed with Miami in 2010, after six seasons in Arizona. The 31-year-old veteran becomes an unrestricted free agent. He was due to earn a base salary of $6.05 million in 2013.

Dansy played through a torn biceps muscle in 2012, starting all 16 games.

Dolphins agreed to terms on a five-year, $26 million deal with OLB Philip Wheeler, formerly of the Raiders.

Wheelers gets $13 million guaranteed. The Dolphins are undergoing a makeover at the linebacker position. Miami already added Dannell Ellerbe on a five-year, $35 million deal earlier in the day, and then released middle linebacker Karlos Dansby. With Wheeler coming aboard, it might signal the end for veteran SLB Kevin Burnett. Wheeler showed he could do it all in 2012. He defended the run, covered, and rushed the quarterback.

I didn’t want Jennings in the first place. He’s not as good as he wants the world to think he is. $10M is over priced for him. If he’s not willing to accept that, then it sounds like his name should quickly be added to the list of divas.

@die hard 67 – ur absolutely right people need to forget about harvin and move on. he played 9 games last season and has never had over 1000 recieving yards. like Bud Grant said: “hurt now, hurt later. healthy now, healthy later.” percy will never be durable enough to be elite

  919. By sealthedeal on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

to all the people who want tavon austin, he’s 5’9″, we had a beast at 6’0″ (percy harvin) and stil struggled in the passing game, the best receivers in the game are over 6’2″, we need a tall receiver who can stretch the field with the deep game

draft keenan allen, cordarrelle patterson, or justin hunter

  920. By blues kluews on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

height shouldn’t be the biggest and only factor when drafting recievers. first and foremost we need a reciever with reliable hands

  921. By sealthedeal on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

very true, we need a red zone and deep target and tavon austin at 5’9″ won’t get that done, that’s all I’m trying to say, reliable hands is a must

    _________________________________________________________________

See the original statement I was responding to was “we can’t compete in the division WITH our QB.” And as we saw this year the answer is:Yes we can with the QB we have.

Now if the statement was “we were competing at the top of division BECAUSE of our QB.” I would have replied differently.

I didn’t want a Harvin trade…..but, the more I heard about him wanting “out” of MN, I say good riddens. I don’t want any player on the team with that attitude. Don’t care who they are…………SKOL VIKES !!

  926. By Nit Picking on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

The Real Don- I would say Ponder was the deciding factor in the 49ers game.

Yes, he probably did lose more games for us than he won.

But let me reiterate what I’m saying:

Can we win/compete in the division WITH him as QB? Yes, we were 10-6 and 4-2 in the division with him as QB.

Do we win/compete in the division BECAUSE of he’s the QB? I’d say no but this isn’t a team that relies on elite QB play.

I will admit at 28 fran tarkenton was way before my time and that I’ve only seen highlights. BUT, we traded for him and we retired his number so why would you leave him out and not rank him #1?
