New Three-Day Negotiating Period Set To Begin Thursday Night

Posted by Mike Wobschall on March 7, 2013 – 7:41 am

The NFL has added a new wrinkle to free agency this year, and it’s a wrinkle that will further enhance the fans’ enjoyment of the League and serve as an accelerant to the commencement of a new League Year. The new wrinkle is termed by the NFL as a “three-day negotiating period for unrestricted free agents (UFAs) and it will provide football fans with plenty of fodder over the upcoming weekend as the new League Year quickly approaches.

Previously, teams were prohibited from entering negotiations with soon-to-be UFAs until the beginning of the new League Year. Now, however, the NFL has instituted this three-day negotiating period, which allows teams to contact the certified agent(s) for players set to hit free agency. Essentially, this three-day window will allow players scheduled to hit free agency a sneak peek at their market value before deciding whether or not to re-sign with their current team prior to the start of free agency. Conversely, it will allow teams to gauge the market of players not on their team to see if the price tag of those players is worth a potential upgrade over a player currently on their team.

Officially, the new League Year begins on March 12, but for all intents and purposes business opens three days before that because of the new three-day negotiating period. This three-day negotiating period begins at Thursday, March 8 at 11:00 p.m. CT and concludes on Tuesday, March 12 at 2:59 p.m. CT. While negotiations may commence during this period, a prospective UFA cannot visit a team (other than the player’s current team) and a team other than a player’s current team cannot directly contact a prospective UFA. If a player is self-represented, clubs are prohibited from discussions with the player during the negotiating period.

The three-day negotiating period applies only to potential UFAs; it does not apply to players who are potential Exclusive Rights Players or Restricted Free Agents (RFAs), or to players who have been designated as Franchise Players or Transition Players.

I tend to believe the Vikings are waiting for this 3 day window…To help gage offers from other teams for Loadholts contract ???..

Even though Loadholt is a tackle…And tackles are on a some what higher wage scale than centers…Sully did just sign a five year contract last season…

I’m sure the Vikings don’t want to openly slap an increase over what they paid Sully…Unless the open market for RT’s dictates that increase…That would only be fair to both parties in Sully and Loadholt…

    Scenario number 4….

Vikings have no interest in Wallace at all…But might be interested in just driving up the price tag on Wallace…
But leaking out the rumor of interest ???…Lets other teams know a few points of interest…

Vikings only have enough cap space to sign one player to a big contract…If you try to pay Wallace…You can’t pay Harvin also…Soooooo ???…

Iis Harvin available for trade ???…Is it time to make calls to Spielman ??…

The vikings went to the playoffs without Wallace and with all of that dead weight you want to get rid of. I think a lot of fans forget that this team does not need drastic changes.
    —————————————————————————————

The Packers went to the playoffs with a vastly superior QB and WR corps than we have. How far did THEY get?

    Well dave…

It looks like Wobbs succeeded..Because the Talking to free agent period has nothing to do with Thursday the 7th…
And everything to do with “Friday the 8th”…

    ————————

Written by Dan Wiederer of the Stib…

•At midnight Eastern on Friday, a new league policy opens the door for NFL teams to begin discussions with agents of outside free agents.
•No deals can be struck or contracts finalized until after 4 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday.
•That leaves an 88-hour window for discussions and preliminary negotiations. But for the record, teams will be unable to have players in for visits or medical evaluations until Tuesday. And, by the letter of the law, rule-abiding teams won’t even be allowed to speak with the free agent players themselves. So the action this weekend will be somewhat confusing. And the coverage of the confusion will be downright chaotic.

If we trade Harvin, I have to believe it would be for a 1st round pick. And if that be the case we wouldn’t have to pick up a high priced WR free agent. We could draft a WR and DT in the first round. No?

  28. By Parkway on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

We don’t need a DT in the first round

  29. By WRHopkins2013 on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

DT,LB and G have plenty of value in later rounds…

Vikings should to target a WR or CB with the 23rd pick…
That is where the value picks are on the draft board late in round one…imo…

  30. By Mike B. on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

The Vikings biggest need is at WR, especially if we trade Harvin. There are no big game changing first round WR in this draft. We should give Wallace a real consideration, if we are planning to go deep in the playoffs this year. We do need to draft some defensive players to fill in for those that will be lost in Free Agency. Specifically MLB will need to be addressed. Outside of WR and MLB, I see a need at DT, OG, CB, and possibly a new Punter. IMO I also think we pick up our #2 QB from Free Agency.

Webb will most surely be gone…By trade or out right release…
What round do they replace him ???…Especially if they get extra picks for a Harvin trade…
Will the Vikings trade Gerhart ???…
Will the Vikings trade Carlson during the draft …If Eifert is available to the Vikings at some point during the first 2 rounds ???…

Extra picks for ANY reason ~ will give Spielman a ton of flexbility on what he wants to do in the draft at any player position…

  33. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

Vikes are going to suck this year we should trade AD and Allen for picks to build around ponder because he can be better than brady, peyton, or rodgers I know it.

  34. By Mike B. on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

WRHopkins I think that trading Gerhart is remote, he’s a good RB to step in relief of AP. I am not sure any team will want to pick up Carlson’s price tag. I think we are stuck with him and his salary. I do agree about Webb and I think he will be released. His release may come during training camp though.

Because diva players need to learn new systems…And that takes time…

Because diva WR’s want to change systems to their strengths…Not the running game…Like the Vikings run…

If Wallace comes in and bombs…It will be Ponder and Frazier’s fault…Not a WR who can’t conform to the system that Frazier has in place…

    Just like Harvin now !!!…

Bring in 2 rookie WR’s early in the draft that like coaching…nuff said…

This is what i think the vikings should do on Free agent signing and the draft

    signing
woodson CB 3 year 4-5mill per year
    landry S 3 year 4-6mill per year
jammer CB-SS 3 year 3-5 mill per year
gibbson WR 2 years 3-5 mill per year

    Resign
    loadholt
    henderson
    Brinkley

    redo contract
allen to a 4 year 8-10mill contract with perks
Kwill 2-3 year 7.5mil contract or let him go
witch will give MUCH more cap room if it gets done…

    draft

get a good DT to takeover or back up Big will
    and grab justin hunter WR
and for the other 7-8 draft picks try and grab a diamonds in the late rounds or just pick fill ins..

money might be a little off for new free agents coming in but with redoing some contracts and maybe letting go of Kwill you would still have enough cap to put more on the table for others.. i think with doing this you would be able to put enough talent on the Defense and put people around ponder to see if he is the real deal or not and make a big run to the playoffs….

PLEASE GET THIS DONE PLEASE LOL…

agreed no more washed up players, especially with a young defense on the rise….havn’t we learned yet that washed up players just take us back a year from the ultimate goal….contending and winning for the next decade+…

Mike I do understand what you’re saying, to an extent. However, it is very naive to think like that. I agree that there may not be an immediate impact player but I am certain this wr draft class will have a huge impact in the league in the next three to five years… starters and pro bowlers alike

it is much easier for the “experts” to say that nobody stands out, then to say that a certain kid is great, and he turns out to be a bust..

A DT is not only good for stopping the run you crazy fools. A great DT eats up bodies and Frees up linebackers to make plays. A great DT creates havoc inside and helps our defensive ends do their jobs more effectively. A healthy pass rush creates turnovers. A gifted DT is huge.

If they trade percy Harvin they will not get a first round pick back, you have a player who is not happy, wants 12+ Million a year and has never played a full season. Vikings have very little leverage, To give up a First round pick ,who are now slated at a certain salary well under 12 million a year, and be prepared to dish out a 60+ Million dollar contract to a player who has never played for you that just screams risk. When in the First round there is plenty of talent Keenan Allen, Patterson, Tavon Austin, none of them are percy harvin but for the money and not having to deal with all the other things percy brings beyond football is just the smart thing to do. Its not worth it to trade percy right now it would be best to pay him play out this year and if he is still unhappy trade him, but not when the whole country knows that he and the team are unhappy.

It’s called a Pass Happy league. Everyone these days are getting more athletic at the “D” line to get to the QB quicker. Thats why we rotate at the “D” line, so we can try and get to the QB quicker.

Okay that still didn’t answer my question. Our rush D and sacks rank is in the top half of the league indicating our DTs are just fine. It’s our LB and secondary that need upgrading to make our pass defense better.

    Parkway,
It’s a fine line with chemistry that gets it done. But we have to rememmber that everything begins up front. We have begun to upgrade our secondary and we will the linebackers as well. But you can never let the line fall behind. K. Williams is not getting any younger and our other DT’s are far from household names.

Mayock said Russel Wilson and Colin Kap would be great NFL QBs before they were drafted, and now he is saying exactly what i’ve been saying E.J. Manuel will be great in the NFL. Who better to backup/replace Ponder than the guy who backed him up and eventually replaced him at Florida State?

  157. By Frank on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

I agree musgrave is bad, and the ponder/musgrave experiment is ending recievers careers (not that jenkins is that good but a better qb and system would of given him a couple more years)

I don’t see Ponder as a Romo at all. He had plenty of 4th quarter drives early in the season. And when the season was on the line Ponder helped lead us to 4 straight wins to get into the playoffs. Ponder did not fold late in the season under pressure he thrived in it. And that is what you want to see out of a YOUNG QB.

What about this: Restructure Winfield and Charlie Johnson’s contracts.Release Jared Allen and Kevin Williams. It frees up 24.5mil and now Vikings have 42mil to spend in FA.Trade guion and gerhart for high draft pick(3rd or 4th) or trade separately for draft picks(4th,5th).We can use that money to resign Loadholt and Harvin. Also, sign Mike Wallace, OLB Justin Durant. Out of Kyle Arrington/Leodis Mckelvin/Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, sign one of those corners. Mock: 1st WR Allen, 2nd DE Carradine,3rd DT Brandon Williams, 4th CB Mathieu, 4th RB [whomever runs 4.4 in 40',fits 5'10-6'0 n weighs 205-215lbs prototype],5th SS Robert Lester, 6th QB Collin Klein. And Im not mock drafting the picks I would get from Guion and Gerhart trade.

Would love to see Wallace but don’t think he is worth the money he wants.
Anyone can run a go route. Most simple play in the playbook. Doesn’t take much talent. My 3 year old nephew can do it.

However, Joe Webb is not an NFL QB and if you say otherwise you are an idiot my brother. I did say he can’t outduel any QB, especially in our division (For instance watching Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning battle it out in the last 6 minutes of a game) Webb can’t and will never be able to do THOSE things. Sorry dude just the way it is.

When the quarterback has the ball in his hands EVERY play, I would say he is the most important player on the field for offense, hence why they get paid so much.

Honestly, I think they keep Webb as backup so Ponder feels like he is the legit starter hands down.

The whole thing about running the bus over web last year the problem with the webb in the packer game was more on poor play calling than quarterback play. Musgrave should be run out of town look at the first drive webb looked good with all the play action calls, it wouldn’t have mattered who was behind center Musgrave was not prepared past the first drive.

I don’t know what Fraizer is thinking by saying that Ponder is the starter no matter what. Every player should have to work for a starting spot no position sould be a lock. That would be like the Seahawks coming out and saying Flynn is our starter because that is what they picked him up for. I can’t remember but I think Wilson was a 5th rounder i think and look at what some compition did at the QB position. Even if we get a QB in a late round i think he should have the same chance to start as Ponder. Who ever shows us the best chance to win gets the job at every starting position.

We need to cut some fat starting with Charlie Johnson and his 3.5 mil, Allen needs to restructure he is worth money just not worth 17 mil K Will I am sure will restructure just to finish his time out here. that would give us plenty of money to get Levitre to shore up our O line for years to come. We would have to pay around 6.5 to 7.5 mil a year.

So…what happened. The Vikings stuck with Gary Cuozzo, Snead was traded to the NY Giants after throwing miserably for the Vikings.

Snead hit 49% of his throws, 1TD and 6 Ints, 40.4 Rtg for the Vikings. He was the third stringer behind Cuozzo and Bob Lee.

With the NY Giants he hit 60.3% of his throws for 17 TDs, 12 Ints, and an NFC leading 84.0 Rating. He also made yet another Pro Bowl while leading the lowly Giants to an 8-5 record.

Titus – yeah, my thoughts are this: if something happens to Ponder we need a backup with potential and not just a body who can hand off. Ponder could blow out a knee or get a concussion and if we didn’t have a desent reserve qb with somewhat of a guarantee of future potential we will be floundering around with a qb who couldn’t start anywhere else. If we have to go with a backup long term we might as well have a “prospect” who would be getting valuable playing time. I am hoping that Thompson will show enough to become the number two guy with a future “drafted” prospect at number 3.

dont trade percy hes only saying what the whole team knows tha pondersuck and he isnt the answer most people can figure it out after about 12 games to see if he a leader or not in this case ponder grade d has quit on the team many times but percy gets all the criticism.who is more valuable to team percy or ponder.there is no proof of him being a problem in the locker room.its all rumors that other people with no knowledge of what goes on there,as ad says hes the best player at what he does wr rb kr 100% effort on every play pay that man his money he earn it.give a legit qb image the kind of numbers he will put up. if they trade harvin it will be the second dumbest trade in viking history and all you people who on board with getting rid of percy(which is about 80%) will be part of the blame.

He’s 2 years younger than Wallace, 5 inches taller and would probably cost half as much. Plus he had almost the same amount of production as Wallace last year and played in 5 less games than Wallace did.

The only thing that scares me is he’s only 24 and has already had 5 knee surgeries.

The fact that he’s had 5 surgeries and was able to do what he did last year gives me good hope that maybe Greg Childs can come back and be productive.

Harvin plays one of the most vulnerable positions, going into the middle of the field where a vicious tackle can come from any direction not from just along the sidelines. He is worth more money. I’ve seen him take hits that made me wonder how he ever got up from them.

I do think he should try and put on a little more muscle this offseason though.

I see James Harrison is now a free agent. I don’t think my finite mind could comprehend Harrison, Allen, and Griffen doing damage together. All we would have to do then is draft a DT. H3ll we would probably score so many pts on turnovers and the “O” would get the advantage of a short feild so often, after a while, the refs would have to call a fotfit.

Animal26 – That’s exactly the kind of article that I was just calling out. It’s a report about Sid Hartman’s article where he cites nothing further than “good sources around the NFL”. What does Sid Hartman consider good sources? Maybe a good source to him is his own “ability” to read between the lines, and decipher based on facial features what is going on in players’ and coaches’ minds.

In short, “good sources” holds zero credibility if the person who cites them is unwilling to name each one.

I also have faith in Ponder he did show promise this season. He was good at the start before AP got up to full speed and had strong finish without his safety blanket in Percy. Granted he did have a stretch of terrible games in the middle, we can only hope that with a few more weapons that he won’t have anymore games where he doesn’t break 100 yards.

Wow, can’t this slipped my mind. This is Cook’s last year in his contract. For NFL standards he’s making pennies this year ($575,000). This is a contract year so he has to prove to the front office that he can actually play 16 games and be consistent on the field like he was in his previous two seasons if he was Rick to show him the money.

Important that Cook is actually “the guy” because Josh Robinson could be decent but isn’t there yet. A.J. Jefferson is probably a dime back at best, and Marcus Sherels is strictly a punt returner. More help is needed at the CB position if Cook isn’t with us for the long haul.

Took a peep at the free-agent list, there sure is some talent out there. Particularly 6’3 Cornerback Sean Smith, would absolutely love having him opposite of Cook. Only issue is that he wants to get paid around $6mil/yr which is just too high. I would consider overspending though because I don’t think I can take watching AJ Jefferson anymore.

Seriously, the guy manages to play tight coverage dam near every play, but when the ball comes he has absolutely no awareness to make a play on the ball! I remember when it was like 3rd and forever in the 2nd Packers game and all he had to do was knock it down but he completely misplayed it and allowed the first down. It’s plays like that where all I can do is shake my head.

But the draft pick for Harvin…
I think Spielman either gets a very high second and a 4th round pick for Harvin…
Or a pick somewhere in the first round…

If Spielman has really burned the “midnight oil” with Harvin ???…
He might get a first round pick…Plus an extra higher pick in the 2014 draft ???…

I Look for March 12th for closure on Harvin…
Nothing can become official until then anyway…

    Also remember…
The 49ers trade with KC can not become official until 3pm the 12th…
That is when the 49ers will have those two second round picks (KC second round picks in 2013 & 2014 drafts) to use for ammunition to do with as they please…

Those two picks might be perfect ammunition to help the 49ers pluck Harvin from the Vikings…

I still believe the Jags and Rams could be heavy suitors for Harvin also….

I think the Dolphins are out…They seem to want Wallace…

It seems ironic that the “breaking news” comes on the opening of the window for agents to talk with teams about potential contract offers.

The simple truth is that the Vikings currently have a Hall of Fame type difference-maker under contract in a game that is typified more than any other by the construct of team. The Vikings hold all the cards.

The source of this “breaking news” is an anomaly unto itself in that it could have legitimately been intentionally “leaked” by either side. If the leak came from the Harvin side, it’s directed at the bottom half of the first round – teams convinced they’re “one player” away from being a Super Bowl team. If the “leak” came from the Vikings, it’s putting those in the Sweet 16 on notice – Percy comes with a price.

The future of the Vikings and Harvin is no different today than it was Friday – before the window for free agent chatter was opened or not. Harvin is available for the taking. Still. Again. But now it’s only for the right price – whether a mutually leaked story has surfaced or not. Serious bidders only.

  472. By Parody on Mar 10, 2013 | Reply

I heard something interesting on the radio this morning about Sid Hartman and his reputation. According KFAN, it turns out that he’s spoken speculatively about other professional atheletes when there was question about them returning to the team, getting a new contract, or something similarly. KFAN reported that this has happened at least 5-times in a relatively short period of time where Hartman “guaranteed” that a player was going to be with the team in the next year, and in each of those 5-times the player was let go.

Obviously, with Harvin, this only makes most of us even less optimistic about his chances of putting on a Vikings jersey again. But then the radio announcers speculated as to WHY Hartman reported as he did for these players on their way out. Supposedly, he does it all for his own best interest. I don’t know how much it could help Hartman, but reportedly he believed that a player would owe him something if he reported they’d be back on a team and that turned out to be true. In Harvin’s case, Harvin refused to even talk to Hartman so Hartman supposedly fabricated this report out of spite.

Please take this new report as it is, a re-telling of a story heard over the radio without having obtained any solid evidence to support it. Making it probably just a little bit stronger than the report that Hartman gave initially that Harvin wants to be traded, that never even provided where the evidence backing the claim came from.

  473. By Nit Picking on Mar 10, 2013 | Reply

    Well to generate some conversation.

If you were the Vikings GM what contract (amount/length) would you offer Percy? If you feel that its best to move on from him, what are plans to replace him? If you do decide to move on from him, what do you with the cap space that would’ve been used to sign him? Do you use it in Free Agency this year? Do you use it to extend someone else who’s currently on the team? Or do you save it for a later date?

Harvin is a “hot potato” that Spielman will be looking to unload when the price is right…

And with WR’s around Harvin’s abilities are getting around 10-12 million a year…
That will have Harvin itchy to sign a contract outside of Minnesota…

My guess is Harvin will be traded soon after the 3 pm March 12th free agent period opens up…

I’m betting that we’ll hear about a good group of our guys getting re-signed just before the free agency signing period officially begins on Tuesday. It really makes the guys believe the team cares about them, but cares about being successful as well. The players will figure out what they’re worth on the open market, and the Vikings will match that for the guys that they value.

That way, players know they’re not getting sleighted and they get the added advantage of sticking with a system and teammates with whom they’re already familiar.

We should draft #25 from texas A&M in the second. dont think he will be there in the 3rd. One of my favorite players in the draft, would fit in perfectly i think.

The real point is…Harvin is a pain in the ass !!!…

And Harvin and his agent will have a chance the next few days to make some real money…
That time is NOW !!!…Not later…

Thje Vikings have a chance to get some draft compensation for Harvin…The best draft compensation for the Vikings to get is NOW !!!…Not later…

These Harvin reports will stop coming out…Until Harvin stops being a pain wanting HUGE money…Money he isn’t worth…

Each report that comes out can still be written off as “rumor”…Even if the stories being leaked are true ???…

Nobody wants Harvin to lose public support…The Vikings,or Harvin and his agent, or the team looking to trade for him….

But if Harvin is foolish with his contract demands ???…Things can and will get ugly…

    And if that happens ???…
Harvin will lose mega millions in a contract…
And the Vikings will lose quality draft picks in a trade…

If Harvin wants out ???…He better be willing to sign a contract for about 5 yrs/55-60 million dollars…And soon…

If Harvin holds out ???….Nobody wins…
Because the Vikings hold all the cards…Whether Harvin likes it or not…

I think Percy should get around what ever Welker or Cruz end up getting perhaps little bit more because he’s a more dynamic player than both of them. But like them he’s slot receiver and IMO slot receivers should not get as much as the elite deep threat WRs do.

  545. By Frederick Jones on Mar 10, 2013 | Reply

    @Shawn,

I think a #1 or a #2 @WR is a good idea. We have to use the other choices at our other “need” positions.

Don’t forget we were lucky with a low injury rate this year. The Vikings need depth, AND quality at too many positions ot overdraft at any position.

  546. By Frederick Jones on Mar 10, 2013 | Reply

    @Titus,

The jonester also sees the NFL changing a lot over the next 10 years. Then again they changed a lot over the previous ten years!

Fred we need 2 WR on the field on every play and 3-4 WRs on many plays throughout a game … we have 1 … just 1

  548. By Shawn on Mar 10, 2013 | Reply

Fred also the WR position generally takes time to learn so drafting 1 may not even give us a starter … we need quantity to find quality … im tired of playing NFL football with High Schoolers at WR. 2 years in a row with no wr’s or just Percy.

  549. By Champ Henson on Mar 10, 2013 | Reply

    F. Jones – good point about injuries. We were lucky last year and it would be rare to have two injury free seasons in a row.

We need to draft two receivers and also bring in 6 or 8 undrafted receivers with the hope that three of them can stick with the team.

Percy has all the talent of a superstar just not the mental capacity of one. If Percy accepted a contract that required him to see a therapist 4 days a week Id think about keeping him around 8mil/per season but otherwise … he gotta go.

So nobody ever ask there boss for a raise and .If you were deny the raise did you go back to work for the same company or go loooking for a better wages elsewhere.did you give it the best effort at your job after you were deny? The average life span of nfl rb about 5 to 6 yrs.Football a differant beast unlike baseball basketball. There contracts are not fully guaranteed. So if he out performs his deal they dont have to give him a early deal, but if you dont they can cut you.percy didnt stop playing hard,i have not heard from him or his agent that he wants 12 to15 million a year but everyone has percy being greedy.Spielman should handle this promblem last yr and paid percy.Know its totally out of control i love the way percy played for us.I think there been to much damage to repair the two sides.spielman smart enough teams drive up the market price for harvin.I think before its over will recieve a#1 and maybe #2 for harvin a deal will be done between now and draft day.

Down – somewhat completely different from ‘sit’, this command also asks your pet to reduce itself
towards the ground and is probably the basic commands that your
canine friend should learn. Start slowly – Do not expect your dog to learn “Stay” if he doesn’t know “Sit. Feathering Hairs which might be longer on dogs ears, tails, body. Same word must be consistently used to make your dog sit and never use short, for example ‘down’.
