Period For Teams To Designate Franchise Players Begins Monday
Posted by on February 18, 2013 – 7:47 amAre you ready for some football? No, not games. The beauty of the NFL, though, is that there really is no offseason. Even when games aren’t being played, NFL news dominates the sports cycle. From free agency to the Combine to the draft to minicamps and everything in between, the news never ends in the NFL.
Monday is yet another landmark in the NFL offseason because it marks the beginning of the period for teams to designate one of their free agents as a franchise player by placing the franchise tag on them. Language in the Collective Bargaining Agreements states that “The period for Clubs to designate Franchise Players will begin on the twenty-second day preceding the first day of the new League Year and will end at 4:00 p.m. New York time on the eighth day preceding the first day of the new League Year.” With the new League Year set to commence on March 12, Monday marks the 22nd day before March 12. And the 2-week designation period will expire on March 4, which is obviously 8 days before March 12 (start of the new League Year).
Anyway, it’s franchise tag time. Last year, a record number of players were tagged by their teams – 21. The Vikings were one of the 11 teams that did not use the franchise tag a year ago. Will they use it this year? We don’t know, and only time will tell. If the Vikings do use the franchise tag, who would they use it on? We don’t know that yet, either, but many would agree the most valuable free agent on the Vikings roster is RT Phil Loadholt. As we’ve written in this space previously, re-signing Loadholt is an important offseason priority for the Vikings.
For more on the franchise tag and which teams may use it, check out this piece written by NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal.

I don’t think they will need to use the tag this season…Unless Loadholt is just asking for to much money ???…Then they might use the tag on him…
Lets hope that doesn’t happen though…Then we might have to find his replacement in the draft this spring…

Does anyone think there is a chance of trying to restructure any of our larger conctracts? ie K Will or Allen?
By WRHopkins2013 on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
I think they will with K Will for sure…Kevin even has mentioned he would be willing to restructure his contract…But how much ???..
Allen is hard to tell ???…To tell you the truth…I am not sure what the Vikings do with Allen this off season ???…I think he will play out his last year of his contract…But do the Vikings want to pay Allen 17+ million dollars for just one season…When they have E Griffen and C Ballard waiting in the wings to play ???…And the Viking could get a draft pick in a trade also…
I think Allen stays…But don’t count on him taking a pay cut…
By Parkway on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
I could see them giving Allen a 2 year extension with a reduced number this year and much less the next 2 years.
And they just have to give Ogletree the limo service number and he should be good.
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
It would be a great way for them to set a good example for younger guys if either or both restructure. Shows what true leadership means, putting the good of the team first. Plus it would open alot of doors for us to be able to make smart moves in FA

Will the Vikes draft a QB or sign one thru free agency?? Our back-up QB’s are average to below average!!! Ponder is our starter for now, but in this league you need your back-up to be capable of taking over and not miss a beat!!!! We’ve seen it happen this year and past years where the back-up comes in and takes over the starting position by their great play!!! There have been many, but ones that stand out would be Tom Brady taking over for Bledsoe and Colin Kaepernick taking over for Alex Smith!! Not to say that I want to see Ponder get hurt, we just need that back-up who could come in and take over the starting job if needed!!! We saw in the Green Bay playoff game that we don’t have that!!!!!

You probably wont find many statements at all from Harvin. He isnt seeking attention which is why both he and management are playing this close to the vest. No one really knows what all is in play but them. All these reports (money or offense isssues) are speculation.
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
It probably a combination of wanting more money and the way he is used in the offense, but who knows. Resign him to a deal that is fair to him and the team, put all the drama behind and focus on surrounding the guys we do have with youthful talent.

What I have personally seen from Harvin..
Is a WR that blew up at his head coach on the sidelines…Had an injury a few plays later ???
And didn’t step out onto the field again to play for his team for 2 1/2 months…When the injury was supposed to be healed in 2 weeks according to his head coach ???…
That I do know for a fact…
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
Yea you may know that much but what we dont know is :
Was the injury more sever than originally thought?
Did he embelish it because he didnt want to play for the team?
Was it the coach being bitter and put him on IR?
Was the blow up something he went in and appologized for and talked it through with the coach?
We do not know 90% of what goes on with personell so it is all speculation. There are a ton of other questions we could add to this too.

Also, the 2011/2012 off-season drama!!! Has everyone forgotten about this? The fact that he was leading the team in receptions and receiving yards this season before he went down, and blew up on Les, leads me to believe that Percy can’t get over the lack of commas in his annual salary number!
Anybody that thinks it’s about the offense, when Percy was getting more touches than anyone else (except maybe Adrian) is fabricating a story line!

How many touches did Joe Webb get? Did he get paid?
By GrandDaddyPurp on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
Well Hopkins you are also entitled to your opinion as I am. As football fans the only thing we know about these players really is their ability to play the game of football and what I know about Percy, as it pertains to that, since he came into the league is he plays his absolute best every snap. There is no question about his effort like there was about Moss.
I dont see a guy who cares about money because he is out there playing like he doesnt care about getting injured. Your body is your ticket to getting paid in the NFL and he doesnt play like that. That is what I see.

I was a fan who kept overlooking things about Harvin…
I called him “the one” in the early half of the season…
But there is a time when a player is way more of a negative distraction than his talent level…Harvin has reached that stage…imo…
Like I said…That is just a personal opinion…
By PurplHaze on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
Would Percy be an asset to the Vikings team? Purely with regard to on-the-field actions, Percy would absolutely be an asset to any of the 32 teams in the NFL!
Can the Vikings win football games without Percy? That’s already been proven, so I don’t think an answer to that question is necessary.
My opinion is, if Percy can exist peacefully as a member of the Minnesota Vikings and be a team player on and off the field, then he should remain in a purple #12. But if he’s unhappy, regardless of what aspect it is, we need to shop him. Having a player on this team that undermines what the coaching staff is trying to instill, or somebody that draws negative attention to himself, isn’t worth keeping around.
By northwoodsv2 on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
I’m in GDP’s camp on Harvin.
A “cancer” would be badmouthing the Vikings every chance he gets. We haven’t seen that, have we?
Of course he cares about money, EVERYONE cares about money, but it’s not an issue because he knows that the money is coming.
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
How did he walk out on the team? I dont remember reading that he chose to be placed on IR….
as far as the fact the he rehabbed somewhere else… who knows if that was his choice or the coaching staff. NONE of us know that. So claiming he walked out on the team is just slander until you have some proof.

If I’m in a “haze”, it’s because of the Webb smoke screen. The most important game of Webb’s career, and he completely blows it! It’s as much Webb’s responsibility as it is the staff’s to make sure he’s ready to jump in under center and play to the best of his ability. Webb proved to me, that he hadn’t prepared for that situation ALL SEASON! Case closed!
And a note to you, Flap jack … My opinions are my opinions, and there’s little you can do to change them. So don’t waste your time singling me out.

In my opinion, the logical answer is Harvin is not happy with the anemic air attack.
Touches are great, but getting the most touches isn’t the object of a football game, last I checked. Harvin got the most touches because he was the only one capable of taking a bubble screen 20 yards down the field, and Ponder was incapable of making a throw accurate enough to hit the other receivers.
We had a fun beginning to the season – we beat up a few soft teams, and surprised the heck out of SF, and ran up an impressive record. Then, we ran into teams that could deal with our 1-2 punch of Harvin bubble screens and AP pounding it out on the ground, and we lost a bunch. Sad thing is, with a more effective air attack, we would have won most of those games, and Harvin knew it (as well as the majority of the free world). Then, he got injured just as AP started firing on all cylinders and Ponder showed improvement.
I’m betting Harvin is going to wait and see what the Vikings do in FA and the draft before he goes public. If it looks like we’re on the road to improving the air offense, he’ll stay, otherwise hasta la vista, baby.
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
@northwoods, that is a pretty logical theory on what harvin will do. I just hope we can do enough to keep him interested and that the megatron money rumors arent true. I would love to keep him but DEF not for that kind of money.

And Ponder’s stat line in GB was 12/25 for 119 and a 41.9 rating.
Oh and Webb had more rushing yards.
Try again next time.

so why do you try and insult Harvin and Ponder all the time…Hypocrite…. you can take that to the bank DOG
By Jeremy on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
how many turnovers did Ponder have or how many WIDE OPEN guys did Ponder miss for no reason at all. Actually Ponders last game against Green Bay was: 16 for 28 for 234 yards; 57% completion; 3 TDs no TURNOVERS; 94.6 QBR and 120 Passer Rating… NO you try again BOY….
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
ponder also when 16/28 234 yards 3 tds no picks and a 94.6 rating the next time he played the packers. whats is your point? that he made two very poor throws that got picked and he learned from them? Yea that sounds like a HORRIBLE young QB…
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
the 94.6 was QBR not passer rating.. that was 120.2 as stated above

Games at Seattle, Green Bay, and against the Bucs on Thursday night. Webb should have gotten some snaps those games. There is no way he could have played any worse than Ponder those games. He wouldnt have came into the playoff game so rusty.

Help me to understand why would you think we should go for a FA- DT, when we could draft one a lot cheaper in the draft?
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
What happened to actually talking and supporting the vikes on this page, its all a bunch of cry babies and worthless arguing. Its one thing to debate merits of certain players and coaches but just slinging slander and insults is a joke.
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
My only thoughts on why a FA DT might not be a bad idea is that we have other positions to fill that could be better filled in the draft? Idk im just tossing ideas out there.
By Vikings1 on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
@Smith22DMVP
I am not against FA, but our track record is not that good when it comes to FA, sure we have gotten some blue chippers but we have also been burned by it but not so much in FA as in the trades we made. In my opinion, there are
reasons that clubs won’t resign there FA’s listed below:
1. They are no longer an asset to the team
2. They have a lot of personnel baggage
3. Asking more money than they are worth
I just believe more in using the draft to fill needs than going after FA’s, just my opinion.

Help me to understand why would you think we should go for a FA- DT, when we could draft one a lot cheaper in the draft?
———————–
Good question…
Several reasons why actually….
1. Supply and demand…The supply in the draft is high…DT is full of value through out the draft…In every round…So teams looking to draft talent can find it there…Without looking at free agency DT’s…(So the demand is low)…
2. Seeing as teams can go a cheaper route through the draft…Some will go that route…But drafting middle D-lineman comes with risk…Will they develop ???…Or just get lazy and in trouble after getting big money contracts ???…Trust in your scouting staff becomes big here…
3. Seeing as demand is low…Price for acquiring a veteran and proven DT becomes a little more cost friendly for GM’s…
Supply & demand…Cause & effect…
So while the talent level is there in the draft at DT…And is a lot cheaper…
Is it cheap enough to pass on a worthy veteran with experience…That will come at a cheaper price…Being as there is a flooded market at the DT position in the draft ???…
By Smith22DMVP on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
Yea, I was not saying that its a great idea, just voicing why i feel they “might” go that route if they felt its best. I agree that building through the draft is the key to a great franchise then be smart and selective when making FA pick ups or trades. It is important to get a few good players through that route, but you NEED to build through the draft

Minter, Patterson, Rhodes, Hopkins, and Banks are the players that I think would be acceptable for us in the first round right now without significant trading and without a top player dropping to us.
By WRHopkins2013 on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply
I think its March 9th before free agents can talk to other teams…
That is a long ways off…And something I don’t think they will look into a lot…
But you can be sure they will be keeping an eye out for deals…

First, pay Harvin. Second sign Spencer from the Cowboy’s and offer the Jets a third round for Revis. Let Winfield go, also pick up another offensive linheman.
