MVP! Rudolph Wins Pro Bowl MVP Honors

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 27, 2013 – 9:49 pm

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson could well win NFL MVP honors in less than a week.

But the Vikings already have another MVP on their roster.

TE Kyle Rudolph took home Pro Bowl MVP honors on Sunday night after hauling in 5 receptions for 122 yards and 1 TD. It was the first Pro Bowl appearance in the 2-year pro’s career, and he came ready to play. The majority of Rudolph’s contributions came early in the game as the NFC built an insurmountable lead. Rudolph’s 3-yard TD grab from NY Giants QB Eli Manning came late in the 2nd quarter and gave the NFC a 31-14 lead at halftime. Also, Rudolph’s 122 receiving yards was a game high.

In the regular season, Rudolph had 9 TDs, which was tied for 1st (Jimmy Graham) in the NFC and tied for 2nd in the NFL (Rob Gronkowski).

This really was a show case of what is to come. Rudolph will soon become the dominate force that people believe Gronk\Gramm to be. Next season nearly 800 yards and 15 TDs!

Well, Parkway, if you had any football IQ, you’d look at the defensive rules for the Pro Bowl. NO PRESS COVERAGE, NO CORNER BLITZING, and yada yada, this game is set up to make the offense play well, its that simple.

Rudolph had 2 guys on him on a few of those throws, the difference is…… THE BALL WAS THROWN ACCURATELY

How many times did Ponder scramble then redirect one of his receivers then drop a dime right in his hands? Never? Sounds about right.

  23. By Carl K on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

Ponder is not a bust at this point.
I am ok with CP7 as the starter… but lets draft a young QB just in case.

Tyler Wilson if he fall to 23.
Tyler Bray in the 2 or 3 round.
Landry Jones in the 3-4 round

and if we draft Quinton Patton, I would be ok with drafting his QB Colby Cameron in the 6th-7th round. Cameron is not a big arm guy but is is a smart game manager that could fit our west coast sytem.

Cameron completed 68.8 % of his attempts this year for 4147 yrds 31tds ONLY 5 ints.

Oh my gosh… You are still whining about Ponder. Man, get over it. Rudolph deserved his MVP and I could care less about the “Rules” for the Pro-Bowl. Kyle, made those catches in coverage and broke free as well. He played well and did so during the regualr season too. All of you whiners that can’t be happy with a 10 and 6 season and happy that some growth is occurring on this team need to go cheer for the Cowboys. Be optimistic for a change and just put a cork in it for a while until the draft is over and until we see how things shake out. Seeing how all of the Vikes in the pro-bowl played yesterday was a good sign of things to come and those who can’t move past this last year need to get a hobby….I hear the NHL is accepting whiner fans at this time…

  28. By Parkway on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

Yet Ponder couldn’t make that throw, nor would he have redirected Kyle down the field. It would have been a sack or interception.

  29. By vikings rule on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

To those pointing out that Eli made great throws, that’s true. It’s also true that Ponder couldn’t consistently make throws like that last year. However Eli also did not consistently make those throws in his second year.

Patience folks. Ponder may or may not prove out, but it’s too soon to make any final judgments on him yet. Next year should be be very telliing for Ponder.

SKOL Vikes! Is it April yet?

@NN- I am not wish for a QB in the first 3 rounds.
I am ok giving Ponder another year.

I am just saying it will be interesting if Tyler Wilson or Barkely fall to pick #23.
Would the Vikings pass on those QBs?

Now, if Tyler Brey or Landry Jones falls to the later rounds, I would take one of them for sure. If Not… I am also ok with selecting QB Colby Cameron in round 7.

Actually, I like Cameron alot. However, if we don’t draft a QB in the late rounds, I would sign Tyler Thigpen as a free agent.

Matt Moore will probablly want too much money and an oportunity to compete for the starting job… which will NOT happen in Minnesota.

    @Carl K

Yes…. the Vikings would gladly pass…. are you seriously implying they should draft them because that would not be a wise decision.

If this was next year and Ponder had another year of mediocre at best performance than Id be more excepting to take a Wilson or Barkley first round. It would be a massive mistake this year because what if Ponder keeps progressing and turns out good? Then you have an extra QB that you may be able to trade for a 2-3 rounder and passed up on good players (such as: Ogletree, Patterson, Allen, Hunt, Hopkins, Short, Hunter, ect.) in this years draft.

Don’t even contemplate taking a QB first round this year.

I wouldn’t draft a QB in this draft any earlier than the 5th round. If someone very good falls to the 4th than I would be alright with that.

The Vikings may not get Matt Moore but that is fine. There are a handful of vets that can be signed in free agency that can help mentor Ponder.

ALSO dont sleep on McCloud John Baltizar Bethel Thompson…. who knows what he could do if Ponder slips and he gets a chance.

I think Spielman and Frazier will take a QB that they think will be the right fit.

Most fans didn’t think the Vikings would move up and select Gerhart in the second round.

Spielman and Frazier don’t dance to the same beat of most fans.

If they covet a QB in this draft… they will grab when they feel the opportunity is right.

Most fans didn’t think the Vikings would take Petterson after C Talyor rushed for over 1300 yards… as I recall, it took Petterson a few games to win the starting job.

Spielman when out and signed and drafted TEs after K Rudolph had a great rookie season.

I am not wishing for a QB… but I will not rule it out… I have never heard Spielman say he passed on a player because we already had that roster spot filled.

well Carl K as a Viking fan you better 1st learn how to spell Adrian Peterson before you start talking about him in such a matter like you know what you’re talking about because that tells me you dont know what you’re talking about….as well as drafting a qb early..period

  47. By Carl K on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

I believe a good GM knows how to balance BPA and fill needs at the same time.
    I trust Spielman and Frazier.

You have to ask yourself… if Barkley or T Wilson was in the same class as Ponder.. do you think Spielman would have taken Ponder over those 2.

Spielman saw a lot of USC film last year. He selected 2 players last year from that offense… I think it is save to say he like what he saw from that system. He might have fallen in love with Barkley last year?

Don’t put Spielman in a box… you never know what he will do come draft time.

    @Carl K

Your examples are so bad! They don’t relate to the situation we are at with the QB situation. Hypothetically they could draft a QB in the first 3 rounds but I would be absolutely shocked because that isn’t the beat they dance to. Let me just break down every one of your takes.

    Gerhart:

Teams use multiple RBs every game but only 1 QB per game.
The Vikings did not have a reliable back-up to AP so they moved up the draft to get someone that can help out during games and in case AP got injured.
Hence the reason why they drafted Gerhart. Also AP was nearing the end of his contract and if he, for whatever reason, decided not to stay they needed someone to take over the RB position. Ridiculous example

    Peterson:

Yeah C.Taylor was turning 28-29 years old during that draft. Nearing the end of his good playing days. Peterson was at our selection and was regarded as one of the best RB prospects in the last decade. You do not pass up a once in a decade prospect especially when the person on your team at that position is above average at best. Just like with the last Gerhart point…. you need multiple backs and Peterson was simply far to great of a prospect to pass up especially when they needed another RB anyways. Also they knew they would have to replace Taylor within a year or so anyways.
If there was an Andrew Luck sitting at #23 then the Vikings would draft a QB. In example the Andrew Luck at #7 in 2007 was Adrian Peterson at RB…. sometimes players are simply too good to pass. I got your example and Ive used it in certain discussions but the way you used it for your argument made this an Absolutely AWFUL example…

    Rudolph:

Going into the 2011 draft when they took Rudolph we had 2-3 TEs on their final year of their contract! We drafted Rudolph and he played with those guys his rookie season. Kleinsasser retired and Shianco left for free agency….. OF COURSE WE WOULD HAVE TO BRING IN TEs!!! What should we have done? Just have Rudolph as our only TE?!?! THE WORST OF ALL EXAMPLES!!!

    Ponder:

There will not be a QB prospect that is simply a ‘MUST HAVE’ at #23 or even within the first 3 rounds. Lets say that Patterson or Ogletree is there at #23 but instead they draft Barkley. Now for argument sake, Ponder turns out good to be the starter…. Now you have a back-up QB that you can only get a 2-3 rounder for a trade (maybe a 1st but most likely will lose value) and miss out on a great prospect that could have been drafted instead and have dramatically helped the team.

Does that help you at all? I sure hope so because if not than you don’t see it clearly at all

  54. By GrandDaddyPurp on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

Fact is we will NOT draft a QB in the first. Period. Ponder earned another year to show he deserves to be the starter.

  55. By Carl K on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

    Barkley is not terrible
    Barkley was outstanding last year!
Compare Barkley’s USC career stats to Ponder’s Florida State stats, and you will see Barkley is clearly the better QB.

Barkley will not be available at #23… so this conversation is over!!!!

  56. By realviking on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

The Vikings will not and should not draft a qb in the 1st round unless, maybe the 2nd or 3rd round since this is Ponders make or break season.

  57. By WRHopkins2013...aka...OTKalil2012 on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

    Carl K…

No doubt Spielman will be looking at the QB position in ANY round…If Tyler Wilson is available at #23…Spielman could easily pull thr trigger and pick Wilson….
If TE Tyler Eifert is available…I could see Spielman grabbing him also…

Spielman will take the best player available…If the value is there…Wilson would have big value if he reaches the #23 spot in the draft…imo…

But my opinion doesn’t matter…It’s what Spielman thinks…
    In Spielman, I trust… ;-)

  58. By GrandDaddyPurp on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

I agree Barkley is not terrible. But I would not draft him. I dont trust USC QBs in the NFL

  59. By WRHopkins2013...aka...OTKalil2012 on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

And the reason Spielman will be looking at QB ???…
Is not to replace Ponder !!!…

Webb is the player who will be looking for a new job…

  60. By GrandDaddyPurp on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

Should have traded Webb last year like I said last year.. He actually had SOME value.

  61. By Parkway on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

If Wilson fell to 23, I’m sure Spielman would be fielding calls from other teams needing a QB to trade some picks, that would be the smart thing to do since he has said he is giving Ponder 3 years.

  62. By Northern Norseman on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

    @WRHopkins2013

Agreed but in the end I really feel like they won’t have 2 inexperienced players backing up Ponder.

It will be someone young and a vet through free agency that back Ponder up in 2013….. just my opinion. Its hard for me to see the Vikings draft a QB high just to replace Joe Webb. I believe the Vikings are higher on McCloud Thompson than some would like to think.

  63. By realviking on Jan 28, 2013 | Reply

If Spielman decides to draft a qb in the 1st or 2nd round it will be Ponder greeting replaced because teams don’t draft a player in the 1st round to sit on the bench.
2nd round picks come in to battle for a starting spot so taking a player in either round just to replace Webb would be a stupid choice.

Was highly recruited by big school like Florida, Oklahoma, Purdue, and several others but a couple of leg injuries in high school and many pulled back their scolorship offers. He is a guy that can play and did well at Texas Tech. I think he could be a dark horse back in the late rounds or even free agency of the draft.

    4th round(1st)- CB Tyrann Mathieu
4th round (2nd)- WR Marquess Wilson
    5th round- LB Jordan Campbell
7th round (1st)- QB Jeff Tuel
7th round (2nd)- RB Rex Burkhead

Literally an all-star draft class that would be!

Remember… This is what I wish to happen come drat day. Obviously some of those prospects may go sooner or later in the draft. This mock is just a dream draft…. hope it happens like this!

The off season revolves on what happens with Harvin ???…

I believe a decision on Harvin might happen quickly after the season ends this Sunday…For a number of reasons…Being ???…

    1. I think the Vikings will pursue Fitzgerald this off season…They can not really attempt doing that…Unless the Harvin issue is taken care of…

    2. Harvin is a hot head…And could lose his cool at any time…If a heated dispute starts between Harvin and the Vikings ???…Both the Vikings and Harvin will suffer the consequences…
The Vikings will get little a trade value for a disgruntled player…
Harvin will get a lesser contract also…Because of being a problem player…

    3. If the Vikings wait to long testing the waters of trading Harvin…They could lose out on Fitz…And maybe getting OG Levitre…If Fitz is not available…

Next week could get interesting early for Viking fans ???…
At least with trade rumors…. ;-)

This is what can happen when a real QB is throwing to our recievers. See a difference here folks. These 2 have never played together but made it look like they have been teamates forever. Just 2 talented players. But hey……we have Ponder (thumbs up) lol.

  124. By DRS. on Jan 29, 2013 | Reply

Ponder does what coach Frazier wants of him, a running team, not a p-a-s-s-i-n-g team. It is Frazier who sets the temple of the team, Frazier wants just as many p-a-s-s-e-s to advance the running game nothing more and that is what Ponder does. If the coaches wanted more I am sure Ponder would do just fine. Ponder helps win 10 games and you are still howling like spoiled children. If you want a p-a-s-s-i-n-g team why not yell at Frazier, He and his coaches are the ones who lead this team and direct the players on the field.

Congrats again to Rudolph. A 3-13 team, tears his knee up comes back averages 170 yds in three games against the Packers after they stack the box each play knowing what he’s going to do and comes up 9 yds short of an all time single season rushing record and takes the team to the playoffs coming off a 3-13 season, there should not even be discussion about MVP of the league, cmon man, AP AD.

  132. By autobon7 on Jan 29, 2013 | Reply

DRS….you are correct that Frasier and staff ask Ponder to throw minimally for 2 reasons. One we have the best RB in the NFL and 2 they are aware of Ponders limitations. I guess I should have pointed out in my first post that my point is folks whinned all year about how Ponder has no quality receivers to throw to which is bunk. We had one of the leagues best in Harvin before injury and Rudolf, two 1st class set of hands, a promising rookie, AP who catches well from the backfield. I never bought into that bull.

  133. By autobon7 on Jan 29, 2013 | Reply

DRS….your are correct twice. We did win 10 games with Ponder…..but not because of Ponder. Actually we didn’t win any games BECAUSE of Ponder but he did loose a couple for us.

  134. By autobon7 on Jan 29, 2013 | Reply

Plain and simple folks….we could have produced the same results (10-6) with any QB on the roster.

If the 9ers win the super bowl, maybe even if they don’t, the Vikes, Jags, Panthers, and Titians are all going to feel pretty dumb for not taking Kaep in the 2011 draft.

Not to say it is all about the QB, but the 9ers are scoring 5 more points a game since they switched to Kaep.

thank all of you for noticing AND SAYING that a great QB is all that is needed shown by MVP Kyle to be undeafted next year again it’s TEBOW TIME and right on GrandDaddyPurp draft defence But don’t pay PERCY put him on MasterCharge as to performance

And he has been on this team how long?

    Have a great day.

  152. By autobon7 on Jan 30, 2013 | Reply

DRS…….quite simply……can you compare the ammount of time/snaps that Ponder has had to Webb? All I’m saying is that if Webb were allowed to be the starter the whole season we could have had the same results. I’m sure he would have struggled at times (like Ponder) but really…..Ponder was asked to hand the ball off most of the time.
We all know that a game plan tailered to Webb would have netted better results against GB. Why did the Viks abandon the run so early after we moved the ball so well on the first drive? You can all say what you want about backup QBs but it doesn’t make a bit of sense that they would not let him play even a little during the year. He hadn’t thrown a ball all year, NOT ONE. Stupid move by the staff. Should have brought him in when we had a lead late in the game (Rams) or when Ponder could barely throw for 50-60 yards whole game. Something, anything, but he got nothing and he is now the scapegoat. Sad

  153. By autobon7 on Jan 30, 2013 | Reply

Its funny to me that all the Ponder supporters claim that “he needs more time”, “he needs a better receiver corps” , he needs better protection. But Webb has one game that he stunk it up and you want to ditch him. Why didn’t you want to ditch Ponder when he barely threw for 50 yards? When he lost the game against GB?

  154. By BlueBird7 on Jan 30, 2013 | Reply
