Team Names Greenway, Peterson, Walsh MVPs

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 10, 2013 – 1:21 pm

Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman met with reporters on Thursday and one of the disclosures he made was that the team voted on its MVPs. This has been an annual ritual for the team the past several seasons, with a MVP being named on defense, offense and special teams. The awards are  voted on by Vikings coaches and players.

Chad Greenway was named the defensive MVP, Adrian Peterson was named the offensive MVP and Blair Walsh was named the special teams MVP. Greenway and Peterson recorded career-highs in tackles and rushing yards, respectively, and Walsh was arguably the NFL’s best kicker.

Spielman also said the team would announce its rookie of the year in April following this year’s draft at a special event. Who would you vote for as the Vikings Rookie of the Year for 2012? Let us know by leaving your thoughts in the comments section below this entry.

Previous Team MVPs
2006: Antoine Winfield, Chester Taylor, Heath Farwell
2007: EJ Henderson, Adrian Peterson, Heath Farwell
2008: Kevin Williams, Adrian Peterson, Ryan Longwell
2009: Jared Allen, Brett Favre, Ryan Longwell
2010: Chad Greenway, Adrian Peterson, Chris Kluwe

Arif usually knows what he’s talking about. I’m sure we would take Jenkins if he fell to 23 but I’m not so sure he will. I don’t know much about Patton I’ll have to watch some videos on him. Rest of the picks fill our needs pretty well.

I think some fans are going to be floored this off season…Because I think to pay Ponder a nice extension, and keep that extension reasonable…

I think they will redo Ponders contract a year early…Before this coming season starts…Not after this coming season is over…imo..

They could save the Vikings organization millions if they do…And would work out great for Ponder also…

Ponder is going to be awesome this coming season…And I think Spielman and Frazier know it already…

  24. By Parkway on Jan 10, 2013 | Reply

Spielman said 3 years for a QB. He’s not going to give an extension before he can fully evaluate Ponder, not to mention he has more bad games than good games this year.

Unless one of the “elite” DTs fall to us, it really doesn’t make sense to take a DT early. Yes it will help our pass rush, but we have the 11th ranked run defense, 24th ranked pass defense, and 31st ranked pass offense. Could definitely use an elite WR or CB sooner than a DT.

This paragraph…Was in the last link I posted…It refers to many different ways Spieman might handle players this off season…

    Spielman remarks…

“There’s a lot of guys out of Percy’s draft that are playing for us that are going into the final year of their deal. Like I said, we go through every single guy on our roster, look at when their deals are coming up. Should we extend them or try to get it done a year early, how does that fit our work with Rob Brzezinski (VP of football operations), who is great at what he does keeping us straight on our cap situation and how we can keep a competitive roster. Right now, I’m looking at the ’14 and ’15 roster, too, and potential guys that are coming up.”

Sounds like Jags don’t want Tebow
    Tim Tebow, QB, NYJ
    4:36 PM

News: Speaking at an introductory press conference Thursday, new Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said the team would have an open competition at quarterback, and Tim Tebow wouldn’t be a part of it. Tebow, currently on the Jets, had been rumored to head to Jacksonville via trade or free agency. “I can’t imagine a scenario where Tim Tebow would be a Jacksonville Jaguar,” Caldwell said.
Analysis: Tebow’s future in the NFL seems bleak: The experiment with the Jets didn’t work out, his hometown team doesn’t want him and the sentiment across the league is that he can’t effectively play quarterback. Tebow’s not worth considering in Fantasy use.

Parkway- Don`t forget free agency. There are going to be lots of good players at positions we need. Supposing we get a wr and a guard, say, in the F.A. market, that will impact draft strategy.

I told you guys, Percys return is up to Percy. His mindset is the ONLY aspect that will decide if he moves forward as a Viking or not! How we finished the season will help him decide, because PERCY WANTS TO WIN!

I think our single biggest need is WR, and I can’t see us settling for less than Allen or Patterson in the first round.

I agree that Loadholt is probably going to be resigned. This has probably been his best season, if you don’t count the stupid penalty out of bounds. Felton should be safe too. If Sanford isn’t signed, something’s wrong with the world. Simpson could go either way.

I don’t think, based on the risk, that we can sign Ponder until next summer. Doing it early could easily cost somebody their job.

Finally someone had the guts to write an article about OFFENSIVE LINE PLAY.

It was written by Nancy Armour.

Nancy quotes players saying some of the following talking about the GREAT GREEN BAY PACKERS OFFENSIVE LINE:

“…there’s 51 sacks. But does that mean theyr’re a bad line? Absolutely not, because there’s a lot of other things that can factor into that.”

Rodgers, like Brady holds on to the football FOREVER. That puts a lot of stress on an offensive line. It’s not the same as whipping it like Ponder and Webb had to do over and over again.

The Packers had 16 sacks in the first 3 games, and 21 in the first 5 games. This was part of the reason for the 2-3 start. Rodgers could not sit back, and hold on to the football as much. The reason for all the sacks? Injuries and the changing of the people on the line. The new players had to get adjusted to playing. The entire line had to get used to playing together.

Could the Vikings win the Super Bowl with Joe Webb being primarily a running quarterback?

    Yes!

But most fans have limited visions on what could happen in the future NFL.

Ultimately the Vikings will need two good quarterbacks, which is why we should all root for both Webb and Ponder.

Did you happen to notice that the Packers QB had about a half hour to throw each pass?

You or I could get open with that much time!

Bye the way Jonesy does not mind ticking off a few people.

What the FREDD wants is smart fans.

We really have far too many that only see the Quarterback.

Hey…the NY Jets fans can do that!!!

  113. By PurplHaze on Jan 10, 2013 | Reply

That DIDN’T happen in week 16, Fred, yet Green Bay had the EXACT SAME O-Line!

My opinion is, our poor execution on Defense was due to a lack of leadership at the QB position. That last minute substitution WRECKED the mindset of the other 52 players on the roster.

    That’s my opinion.

    @PurpleHaze,

Well, Brett Favre showed us how having a great QB can effect the mind of a football team.

I would also have to say that the situation was a tough one for any QB to step into. He sat ALL YEAR. How many veteran QBs have had to do that, and yet came up with a great game?

  117. By PurplHaze on Jan 10, 2013 | Reply

Webb went out and executed SO POORLY, that NOBODY thought we could win the WC game with the QB we had on the field!

    @Parkway,

Well it won’t be a perfect draft. We are picking too low.

With the first group we will have to buy a LB.
With the second group we will have to buy a CB.
Other wise there may be some good choices there.

  121. By PurplHaze on Jan 10, 2013 | Reply

I didn’t expect Webbs best game, but then again, I didn’t expect him to skip the b@ll into the receivers or throw it over their heads either. This was rather Webbs WORST performance EVER! It looked like he didn’t prepare the entire regular season OR pre-season!

  122. By Parkway on Jan 10, 2013 | Reply

There are more FA Cbs out there than LB this offseason. I’d take DRC or grimes. Not sure what their market value will be.

  123. By Frederick Jones on Jan 10, 2013 | Reply

    @PurpleHaze,

I think there is a lack of confidence in Webb because of the way he talks. Joe does not speak with a lot of confidence. He is obviously smart with the academic record he has, but he may need to practice his speech.

  124. By Frederick Jones on Jan 10, 2013 | Reply

    @PurpleHaze,

The question is “did the coaches let Joe Webb be prepared for a situation like this?” Jones does not think they did!

You know how it is with sports, you can be good enough but the coaches make you sit. Have you ever been through that?

I do understand what you’re saying, Fred, but I believe Joe carries as much as or more blame than the Coaches. As the #2, he needs to be ready when his number is called. If he doesn’t feel he is, he needs to speak up. Only he can truly know.

    @PurpleHaze,

Adrian Peterson did an incredible job running the ball this year. How many “running back sacks” did he endure. Most of those are not a running backs fault in freedomfreddie’s view.

But Ponder looked silly even during the 5-2 portion of the schedule. He looked schizoid much of the time. But much of that is not his fault.

    We need guards and cornerbacks.

Fredrick Jones, Webb is through as a quarterback – period! Why do you continute to put forth an argument for him at QB? Webb is a formiddable athlete. Wide receiver, cornerback, or safety would be positions that we could try and retrain him to use his strong and quick athletic ability. But enough is enough about QB.

Over the last several months all you have been doing in your blogs is trying to convince us that Webb should be the Vikings quarterback? Are you related to him or something?

Alright its pretty obvious to me our first round pick will be either WR or LB.

2 of 3 starting LBs on the roster are free agents … neither are great both are solid, Im guessing we sign one after the draft depending on who we draft early.

and with the worst WR core in the NFL … well

    Sign DWayne Bowe

    1st round pick LB

    Thats my prediction

Because of a stunning and awful performance of Joe Webb in the playoff game…

Drafting a QB has taken on a “number one” priority status along with a few other positions (LB & WR)…For Spielman to look at this spring…

Drafting players..Are supposed to replace the weakest links on football teams…
Not sure what everyone else so in that playoff game…But this fan saw a back up QB stink up the place at Lambeau field…

Veteran QB’s are not cheap…QB’s are one of the highest paid positions in football…Even just solid back ups…

    Ponder needs competition..Not replacing…
And future needs at QB should come from the draft…Not from some other teams bench…

Joe Webb is gone…If you think the Vikings brass is going to trust another football game into Joe Webb’s hands…You are very mistaken…

Joe Webb came in as a WR…failed…They tried him then at QB…failed…Back to WR…failed…Back to QB again…failed…

Its time for Joe Webb to go…

@OTK I have to disagree with you. The Vikings don’t have a need to draft a QB or bring in a FA. Although it is possible they may bring in a QB or draft one. I don’t think you will see that as a “first” need basis. Ponder is the starting QB for the Vikings unless he is out played by another in the Preseason. I don’t see Webb having a lot of options this coming year to go to another team. The running QBs didn’t fair well this year and adding his performance as back up. We would be lucky to get a 5th or 6th rounder for him. I think you see a competition for the #2 QB position between MBT and Webb. Although Webb is still under his rookie contract they could decide to cut him and draft a promising QB at rounds 4 or under. That’s how I see the QB situation going.

  153. By Mike B. on Jan 11, 2013 | Reply

We have the 23rd pick of the draft, so we are not going to get the best WR availible. I think that first pick could be a LB, OT, or OG. Those top notch players sometimes fall to those lower spots. I heard Frazier complimenting Loadholt, but has he done enough improving to get a contract. I am not sure. We need more Depth on the OL anyway and would like our first pick used there or if there is a top notch NT that would be good also. I see our needs at WR, OT, OG, NT, LB, CB. PR/KR. I am not sure why they signed a punter, but they may want to give Kluwe some competition. I have already made my comments about Harvin I hope he is back next year, but not suprised if he isn’t.

  154. By North Star on Jan 11, 2013 | Reply

I would like to see Joe Webb used with Percy Harvin as a reciever
A few lessons on how to catch and hold onto that round thing.
Don’t foget Peterson had problems at first. And don’t foget Joe can run like a
deer with the hounds on his heels I say give it a try.

  155. By Parkway on Jan 11, 2013 | Reply

Shawn we won’t have the cash to sign Bowe. We have about 16 mill in cap space I believe, if williams restructures we might have close to 20. Harvin will take up about 10 mill of that, loadholt will take up a fair amount along with maybe Simpson and Felton. Bowe will take at least 10 mill a year so we won’t have the space.

And we will take a LB in the first 2 rounds due to Henderson and Brinkley being FA this offseason.

  156. By PAUL M. on Jan 11, 2013 | Reply

As I’ve been posting for 2 seasons now, Rick Spielman has done a fine job drafting players — love Walsh & Harrison, but hands down, Matt Kalil is not just the best rookie. . . . he’s already one of the best Tackles in the league!

I believe Harrison Smith will be 1 of the top Safeties & Walsh will be 1 of the best PK’s for years to come.

The one Achilles heel Spielman has is, if indeed, it’s his call on Head Coach — he hasn’t done a great job – I give him – or whoever’s responsible, a C- on the Head Coaching selections. The Vikings won IN SPITE of the coach — and it took a monumentally historic season by Adrian Peterson ( aka “the Angel of Death”). Otherwise, if Adrian couldn’t play, Frasier would have had a losing season with no weapons.

  157. By PAUL M. on Jan 11, 2013 | Reply

    Going forward, we need:

    1. A great head coach – Probably ain’t gonna happen
    2. WR
    3. OG
    4. MLB – time to get a great one in the NFC North tradition
    5. OLB
    6. CB – Seattle’s cb’s are the trend of the future
    7. RT – Loadholt is playing on borrowed time – “looks like Tarzan – plays like Jane”

    To All,

Could you magine if the Vikings at least two-three ALL-Pro Lineman. Where do you think AD numbers would be?
Most of the time he was tackle right out the gate, majority of the time.
The Vikings money was wasn’t on Carlson. We need a two linebackers Brinkley and Henderson cannot tackle for sh$$t. We need get back to gang tackling. Kevin Williams is well past his prime, we need up grade. Need another OC and some coaches need to be let go e.g. Singletary?
