Notes And Quotes From Frazier’s End-Of-Season Press Conference

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 8, 2013 – 1:43 pm

Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier held his annual end-of-season press conference on Tuesday afternoon. Frazier meets with reporters multiple times per week during the regular season, but Tuesday’s press conference represents the last of these regular meetings of the 2012 season. Frazier will, of course, speak with reporters during the offseason, but this is the last extensive question-and-answer session he’ll have until most likely the Scouting Combine in late February.

Here are several notes and quotes from Frazier’s end-of-season press conference…

Proud of his team
The Vikings fell short of their ultimate team goal – winning the Super Bowl. But they accomplished many other goals throughout the 2012 regular season, including collecting enough wins to earn the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2009. For that, and for other unstated reasons, Frazier said he was proud of this year’s team.

“I’m very, very proud of our football team and what they accomplished this season,” Frazier said. “Our guys worked extremely hard going all the way back to April 23 when they came back into the building to really set a foundation for this 2012 season. Because of their hard work, we were able to secure a playoff berth. The foundation has been set for our team, without question.

“Our core identities showed up. The traits that we talked about throughout the year…being a tough, smart, disciplined football team. It was exemplified through this group of young men.”

Developing a young roster
I didn’t pay much attention to this aspect of the team until Frazier referenced it during his press conference, but 22 of the 53 players currently on the Vikings roster are listed as being in their 1st or 2nd season. It’s impressive that this team played so well so late in the season and qualified for the postseason with so many young players and so many young players at important positions.

Frazier credited his coaching staff for the work they did in developing young players and he also expressed gratitude to his veteran players for their leadership roles as well.

Frazier also said he didn’t anticipate changes to his coaching staff, barring any promotions some of them may receive.

Dome-field advantage is back
Frazier has said many times in the past that he understands how difficult an environment Mall of America Field can be for opposing teams. He mentioned it once again during Tuesday’s press conference, expressing appreciation for the support of Vikings fans and for the noise the crowd creates in the Vikings home stadium.

“I think for any team that comes to Mall of America Field, our goal going into the season, we wanted to make it extremely difficult for anybody to think that they could come here and win. Our guys, they got that done. To go 7-1 at home, with the support we got from our fans, that was a big deal for our success during the season.”

Injury report
Frazier listed DE Jared Allen (shoulder) and P Chris Kluwe (left knee) as players who will likely undergo surgeries for ailments. He also listed LB Tyrone McKenzie (shoulder), RB Adrian Peterson (core muscle), QB Christian Ponder (triceps) and CB Antoine Winfield (hand) as players also dealing with injuries, but he didn’t indicate surgery would be needed for any of those players. Overall, none of the injuries should impact any of those players’ ability to participate minicamps, training camp or the 2013 regular season, according to Frazier.

Ponder is the Vikings starter going forward
Frazier was asked a series of questions about the team’s quarterback situation. He was unequivocal in saying that Ponder would be the team’s starter going into the offseason. He was vaguer about the depth chart after Ponder, saying Joe Webb would compete for the backup job behind Ponder and also mentioning McLeod Bethel-Thompson as someone who was involved in the team’s plans. Beyond that, Frazier wisely pointed out that it’s hard to prognosticate what will happen at that position – or any position – at this point in the offseason.

Futures for Kevin Williams, Antoine Winfield
Kevin Williams and Antoine Winfield have been productive players for the Vikings for many seasons, and both were vital components to the defensive effort in 2012. But both guys are also quite long in the tooth, with Williams having completed his 10th season and Winfield having completed his 14th. As it stands right now, though, it sounds like Frazier would love to have both guys return for the 2013 season.

“The intangible in this is a big deal when you’re trying to get the locker room the way you want it,” Frazier explained. “And both Antoine and Kevin are guys who have achieved a lot in our League, a lot of success. So to have star players with the demeanor and leadership qualities that they both possess, helped our football team in 2012, there’s no question about it.

“Would love to have those guys on our team going forward. That’s something we’re going to talk about when we have our personnel meetings with (General Manager) Rick (Spielman) and our personnel department. Just talk about their fit going forward. But from my vantage point, very appreciative of the leadership they provided this season, what they’ve meant in my time here in Minnesota, and I want them to remain Minnesota Vikings. They are great, great players and great people as well.”

Dome isn’t going to last much longer, teach our guys how to play on grass and outside.

    I think it’s a mistake saying it’s Ponder’s job without any competition.

Probably need to find Winfields and Kwills replacements in this draft.

In regards to developing a young roster, I would just like to point out how much of a BEAST Smith will be for the Vikings. Even though the Vikings moved up to grab Harrison Smith I think we stole him in the draft.

After seeing how Smith played his rookie season, he should of been drafted by the Bucs as the 1st Safety over Mark Barron……..sure glad they didn’t!

With Ed Reed and Troy Polomalu on their last couple of years, Harrison Smith is going to be a Top 3 Safety by his 3rd season and most likely the captain of our secondary once Winfield retires.

It may be my Viking bias poking out but I honestly don’t see any weaknesses in him. Perfect size for a safety, smooth enough to be a corner, hard hitter, great ball skills, can score after he picks it off, smart. on and on and on. I’m excited to have Harrison Smith in purple!

Bob, thanks for your reporting this year, your articles, blogs, webcasts, etc. Well done! To the Vikes, thanks for a very memorable year. Go get those long overdue rings next year!

They tried leading Les down the rabbit trail with Percy and a couple other players, and I thought he handled all those questions really well. If you listen to just Les, Percy still has a spot on this team, and it looks as though it’s really all up to him.

I’m excited about what’s coming with the 2013 draft, as well as in the fall of this year. Good things are going to happen, as long as we stay the course. SKOL VIKINGS!!!

Smith is a fantastic new safety !!!…

Kalil is a fantastic new LT !!!….etc, etc, etc !!!!

And all you guys want to talk about…
Is what is going to happen to a god aweful player in Joe Webb ???…

  12. By Parkway on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

Webb outplayed Ponder. So what does that make Ponder…..

  13. By Mike B. on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

Webb was lucky that those 2 air b@lls weren’t intercepted. He showed us exactly what I have been saying for 2 years. A great physical skillls but not a starting QB. You can sit there and not admit your wrong all along. That’s fine. I said all this season Ponder will start every game unless he was hurt and guess what he did. The coach never once considered pulling Ponder. Now Frazier says he is the projected starter for next year. I said that also. You may not like it or favor it. But it is what it is.

  14. By Mike B. on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

But then in the end we are both Vikings Fans and we should probably shouldn’t fight about things like this and hope things work for the best and we win games.

  15. By Parkway on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

Hopefully Spielman does not share the same sentiments as Frazier when it comes to keeping the same coaching staff around. It’s pretty clear Musgrave needs to be gone. I’m fine with the rest of the staff for next season.

  16. By Mike B. on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

Parkway I guess it depends on if Frazier is willing to take Speilman to task on a coach firing. GMs don’t necessarily hire Coaching Staffs that is done by the Head Coach. The GM has a say as does the owner, but over all it is the Head Coach.

  17. By Parkway on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

The GM makes sure the team is running to the best of it’s ability, including all coaches under the head coach. I’m sure Frazier had initial say, but Spielman can obviously do what he wants with them.

Fire Mustgraves. IMO it will light a fire under the WR’s. They will try harder knowing that the routes called might actually lead to some catches and not bubble screens and a occasional fly route.

  20. By Matthias on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

Some said that Musgrave is great at coming up with game plans…He simply uses them sometimes wrong. Some said that he should be an assitant. Let somebody else call the plays for him, even though I don’t think that it will happen… The playcaller gets all the blame or honor…

  24. By Spike on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

I agree with the comments that Joe Webb is a great talent, just misplaced. The Vikes need more WRs and he has those skills. Seems like an obvious move.

I also think it’s in our best interest to have a starting QB and backup QB with similar skills/strengths. Ponder is a pocket QB, Webb is not. This creates challenges for our offense when Webb has to replace Ponder. When that happens, our entire offense needs to fundamentally adjust to a differnt QB style. That’s hard to do quickly. If both QBs play a similar style, then when the backup QB has to come in, it’s a smoother transition for the entire offense.

Move Webb to WR. Draft another QB to compete with MBT for the 2-3 spots.

You actually believe all of us on here listen to what you say as some sort of “advice” as to what to actually do? You’ve lost your cotton-pickin-mind. At weeks 12 and 13 you were making comments along the lines that Ponder was the worst quarterback in the league and that we were better off loosing the last few games, instead of winning them to go to the playoffs, so that Ponder would loose the starting job. Now, when our team has had the best year they’ve had in a while, you are trying to convince people that Musgrave is the problem? There are no problems with the coaching staff on this team. Where this city and team has problems is with fans(or so called fans) like you who continue to rag on players, coaches, management………..whoever you feel like trash talking at the time. All you care about is yourself. You have this God Awful feeling because we lost the first playoff game (come to think of it I think your main problem is that “your guy Webb” did terrible instead of showing up Ponder). When it comes down to it your own ingorance has blinded you and you cant see how the team grew in leaps and bounds this year, and will be even better next year, and in the years to come. Musgrave and Ponder are a big reason for it.

Face up to it PARKWAY, Ponder and Musgrave are here to stay, along with Frazier and the other coaches and all of them will be a big part of why we win a Super Bowl soon. You, my friend, and the ideas you and your type try to instigate, are the reason why the team, and fans, have had so much doubt and negativism the last few years. You’d better get on the bandwagon buddy cause we have a great team, a great staff, and great fans. The Bus is moving ahead full speed – if you dont get on it – then you’d better prepare to get run over by it.

I personally gave into the negativity during the 5 week slump of Ponder. I was angry at the lack of a passing game…and I still say that my opinions of wanting Ponder to have been benched were well placed.

I was wrong to throw Frazier and Musgrave under the bus…I was caught up in them not deciding to see what else they had @ QB.

I’ve always liked Frazier…I just didn’t like how he handled that situation.

It will be great to see if Ponder can stay consistent next season. Hopefully we do end up getting someone like Keenan Allen to compliment Harvin if he sticks around.

3-13 to 10-6 in one season…there are plenty of great things to be said about that!

You definitely have no idea what you are talking about. Musgrave is a big part of the problem, and Ponder is not a good QB. Sorry if you do not understand anything about football, which you most likely don’t whipping out phrases like “cotton-pickin”. Not to mention countless grammar and spelling errors which make you sound like a complete idiot.

And Webb outplayed Ponder, for the 100th time. So yeah, Webb is better than Ponder, but they are both bad. We need a real QB.

And “get on the bandwagon” huh? You must have 0 ability to think for yourself with an attitude like that. Very sad.

I think we can all agree that Webb is a tremendous athlete. The debate comes whether he can perform better than Ponder on the field as a QB.
I haven’t seen Webb do anything in the passing game that would put him ahead of Ponder. Webb can certainly outrun Ponder, but we all have seen how running quarterbacks do in the NFL.(Vick for example)
Ponder gets another year as our starting QB and it’s his job to lose.

But you think your real slick impersonating 2 people – back and forth to put forth an argument to bash two white people: Ponder and Musgrave. You are the ultimate RACIST! Bashing 2 whites at the expense of promoting an African American (Webb). Frazier is a first class African American, and so are his African American assistants. But Parkway(AKA John 61) wants the whole team and all of the coaches to be African American. Look closely bloggers: Do you see Parkway(AKA John 61) bashing on any African Americans at all? I think the OCs and the Head Coach did a good enough job this season. Frazier might take a look at his QBs coach.

As far as naming Ponder his starter going into camp, of COURSE he did. He just drafted the kid 2 years ago and called him our “franchise QB”. If you recall, back in the day QBs weren’t expected to be worth a tinkers dam until their 3rd year. Give CP another off-season, a WR that can create space, and a RT that doesn’t need TE support to hold the edge, and we’ll see what we have. If he fails NEXT season, start shopping. You can’t give up on him yet, though.

Someone said Musgrave was (something positive) because we won 7 more games than last year. Give credit where credit is due, bro. Peterson gave us those wins. Hit in the backfield over and over, and still bust big runs while our passing game floundered the vast majority of the season. Musgrave didn’t X and O Peterson making the magic happen.

So… lets all keep our fingers crossed the Spielman has as successful an off-season as he did last year… his draft netted us 3 starters, 4 if you count Wright. Grab a WR, a cover corner, a DT and a RT, and I think we are gonna be pretty danged good next year.

Norv Turner may be better than Musgrave, but not in the short term. The players are already well into Musgraves playbook… trying to learn another will slow them down. In addition to that, I don’t want Frazier to have a bad year and get the axe only to have the Wilfs look to their “sucessful offensive coordinator” as the man to fill the head coaching position. I can stomach quite a bit, but the slightest glimmer of a chance that Norv Turner might get Fraziers job makes me quesy.

. Fire Musgrave, Norv Turner as replacement?

. Get rid of John Carlson and his contract and sign D Bowe and either re-sign Harvin to a 2-4 year deal or trade him

. Sign CB Aqib Talib in FA

. Sign OG Andy Levitre in FA

. Sign DT Henry Melton or DT Isreal Idonije

. Draft WR, MLB, CB (in that order)

    ANY THOUGHTS?

I read earlier in this blog that Webb outplayed Ponder!!! What the heck were you watching!!! Webb had no business even being out there!!! The kid has talent, but he’s a Tebow type of QB, not what we want here, move him to wideout!!! Ponder, along with an MVP season from AP and a much improved defense, led us to a 10-6 season!!! I don’t see any coaching changes in the Viking staff unless they are interviewed by other teams for a position on their staff!!! I did read somewhere, where the Vikes were interested in Pat Shurmer!!!

The Minnesota Vikings are a running team, period!!!!!! As long as #28 is behind the QB, we will be a running team!! Ponders numbers are not good, we know what we have in Ponder right now, but the kid is only in his second year!! Let’s get some better talent at WR, then see what he can do!!! This guy isn’t Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, who both of these guys make average receivers all pros!!! Ponder is our guy, get use to it!!!!

Notice I am not committing the Vikings will make a pick in the first round…Because ~ unless the Vikings make a trade and get another first round pick for Harvin…
I would not be surprised at all…The Vikings might trade out of the first round all together this spring…

The Jacksonville Jaguars, desperate to sell season tickets, would seem a welcome trading partner with the Vikings for enigmatic wideout Percy Harvin, who attended the University of Florida.

The Jags have the first pick in the second round of April’s NFL draft, and that might be the best the Vikings could hope for with the unpredictable and injury-prone Harvin.

Bringing in a more suitable Ponder-like Backup QB to compete with Webb for the backup role
MBT keeps his 3rd string job.

    WR.
Vikes looking to dump their best WR (Harvin) with no plans to add any additional WRs.

Vikings priorities are for CBs, DBs, Ss, DLs, OLs and a Backup QB in the draft and FA.

I like our current set of WRs and TEs. With better play from the QB, I think they can be really good.

I said that I would wait until the end of the year to pass judgement on Ponder. Based on his performance, I just don’t see him as a starting NFL QB. I can definitely see him as a #2, but definitely not someone worthy of the franchise QB label.

Put it this way, when RGIII (a rookie) was asked why the Redskins were effective throwing the ball downfield, RGIII said that being the top rushing team in the league had a lot to do with it and his success at QB. So what do the Vikings do? They couldn’t manage to parlay an MVP performance from the best RB in the league into a consistent passing game with their #1 pick and 2nd year QB starting every game. Granted, game planning and the quality of the OL and receiver corps had something to do with that, but having watched Ponder closely, he just doesn’t seem to show the leadership, decision-making and throws that you would expect from a 2nd year top-flight #1 QB. Unfortunately, there aren’t many FA QBs out there (excluding Flacco) that are much better than Ponder, but it would be intersting to see if a guy like Matt Moore could give Ponder a run for his money at camp next year. If not thru the FA route, use a mid round draft for a QB. Either way that would mean Webb would have to be either converted or traded – Ok by me.

I would miss Percy, but let’s face it, if he’s that much off the grid with Ponder, and you’ve decided Ponder is your guy and eventual leader of this team, then it would be best to see what we can get for Percy. This is a young team, and you don’t want a bad seed in the locker room undermining Ponder’s leadership.

In the draft, I’d like to see some additional depth at LB, L/RG, SS, QB, WR in that order.

    GO VIKES!

Great analysis drinkheavy. Except I will say that shadu and burton should be cut they are not very good. Jenkins is a great 4/5 guys he has reliable hands. Simpson can come back on a short term cheap deal as a 4/5 guy as well.

Well said on Ponder. How Ponder failed to get 200 yards a game with monster performances by AD nearly every game is beyond me. I’ve been saying that for a while that he is not a starting NFL QB, and sadly it looks like it’s going to take us another 4 years to figure that out like Tjack. Can he win some games with the best RB in the league? Sure. But he lacks the leadership and passion for the game as you mentioned to ever take us anywhere meaningful or win games coming from behind. He did not lead us back from more than a 7 point deficit all year.

You are also right in saying that our options are pretty limited this year. Sad that if we had just lost 2 more games last year we could have had Luck and been superbowl contenders every year for the next 15 years.

I have faith in Spielman to have another great draft this year and hopefully spend some money in FA to put a great team together. I guess we can only hope that Ponder somehow improves next year. Not having an open QB competition is a huge mistake and will not drive Ponder to improve since clearly he does not have that kind of competitive fire to do it himself.

I would say we could get rid of Cook and jefferson too, plus Carlson. Simpson we should hold onto. With more options downfield he could be even more useful. Whether we keep harvin or not is going to tell the tale. I wish that Harvin would just come out and tell people what is up and how he feels rather than everyone speculate that he is coming or going. He knows he has a good thing here and the Vikings are not going to jepoardize what they have with him unless he gives them reason too. He is not stupid. i am hoping we will see signs of something from him in the upcoming weeks. he can’t stay quiet forever…

If Joe Webb has any value in the NFL he should be traded..
If Percy Harvin doesnt want to play for the Vikings, Trade HIM..
As for the future.. The Vikings Defense has been outstanding when they have a great MLB. 4-3 defenses need great MLB’s. There are alot of WR options both in and out of the draft, but should be addressed. As for our AGING (LOL yeah right) defensive line. If there is High talent available after we fill our primary needs. MLB – WR – OT (right side move Loadholt to Guard) – Best Player available including QB
    1) Ogletree – Minter
    2) Hunter – Patterson – Rogers
    3) Ricky Wagner (OT) or best OT avialable
    4) Best QB and or CB

Now, Im not completely sure this is his FA season or last on contract but either way. They need to make him happy (within reason) or trade him and get something for him. I think he is worth a 1st round pick. For example, The Rams might want a KR slash slot receiver with his potential. Think Sidney Rice..

Has any other Vikings WR out performed Harvin since he was drafted? I’m not sure what all the hostility is about…I understand the Webb stuff..but Percy!? He’s our AP in the passing game. He’s consistent and fun to watch. Who doesn’t like return kicks for TDs.

Answer: Tavaris Jackson @ GB in his first start as a Rookie. Total passing yards 50 9/13 possessions were three and out.

‘Jackson, a second-round draft pick out of Alabama State, was 10-for-20 for 50 yards and one interception. “I just couldn’t find my check-downs,” Jackson said. “I didn’t want to force it.”
Childress said he would stick with Jackson, even though “the numbers aren’t going to bear out that he did anything of merit.”‘

Vikings only score was a defensive touchdown. GB 9 MN 7
