A Vikings team that’s proven resilient throughout the 2012 regular season needed every ounce of it they had left to qualify for the postseason. When all was said and done, the Vikings defeated a high-powered Green Bay Packers team that showed no quit themselves by a count of 37-34 in front of a frenzied Mall of America Field Crowd on Sunday.

“Just a great job by our football team,” Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier said moments after the game. “I’m so proud of our guys. A complete team effort all the way across against a very good football team. For our guys to be as resilient as they were throughout this ballgame…our fans were terrific throughout this game. It’s the first time in a long time I felt like, playing against Green Bay and being at home, we truly had home-field advantage because our fans were loud, they made it hard for their team to really function at times, and we needed that. I’m very, very grateful to our fans that really had an impact on this ballgame at Mall of America Field.”

There’s no question the Vikings heart and their home crowd’s noise made a difference in Sunday’s outcome. But the Vikings also needed firepower to get the job done, and that came from the arm of QB Christian Ponder, the legs of RB Adrian Peterson and the right foot of rookie Pro Bowl K Blair Walsh. Ponder, playing in the biggest game of his young career, came up big by completing 16 of 28 passes for 234 yards with 3 TDs and no INTs – good for a passer rating of 120.2.

“He’s playing at a high, high level at this point,” Frazier said. “And we needed that today going against a high-powered offense with an excellent quarterback. He did a terrific job. He’s playing very good football at the right time for us.”

As for Peterson, he’s been the heart and soul of the Vikings all season, and was in Sunday’s win as well. The best RB in the NFL carried the ball 34 times and continuously pounded a game Packers defense. He finished with 199 yards rushing and 1 TD, while also adding a receiving TD to his box score. Peterson became just the 7th player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season and he came up 9 yards short of breaking the NFL single-season rushing mark.

Defensively, the Vikings had a hard time containing Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay’s explosive passing game. Rodgers finished going 28 of 40 for 365 yards with 4 TDs and 0 INTs, good for a 131.8 passer rating. But there were moments when the Vikings defense combined with a raucous Mall of America Field crowd to come up big. Green Bay was forced to punt after their first three possessions, and that allowed the Vikings to build up a 13-0 lead.

On top of that, Rodgers was pressured for much of the day. The Vikings registered 5 sacks of Rodgers, with 3.0 of them coming from Everson Griffen and 1.0 each coming from Jared Allen and Brian Robison. It was Robison who sacked Rodgers and forced a fumble in the 3rd quarter that led to a TD pass from Ponder to Peterson and a 27-17 lead. LB Erin Henderson led the Vikings in tackles with 7 and Kevin Williams had a big pass defensed early in the game on a 3rd down.

The most important sequence of the game came at the end, following a cold-blooded offensive series by Rodgers and the Packers that resulted in a 2-yard TD toss to WR Jordy Nelson and a tied game at 34 with 2:54 to play. Marcus Sherels returned the ensuing kickoff 29 yards to the Minnesota 28, setting up Ponder and Co. with a 1st and 10 and an opportunity to march for a game-winning score.

And that’s exactly what happened, thanks in large part to a crucial 3rd-down throw by Ponder. After bouncing a pass incomplete to Peterson on 1st down and then Peterson losing a yard on a 2nd-down carry, the Vikings faced a 3rd and 11 at the 2-minute warning. The worst-case scenario for the Vikings was an incomplete pass that forced them to punt the ball to Rodgers, who could put together a game-winning drive of his own. Rodgers never got that chance, though, and it’s because of a perfectly-placed pass by Ponder to WR Michael Jenkins down the left sideline that yielded 25 yards, a 1st down, and hope within the stadium.

From that point on, the Vikings wisely rode the legs of Peterson, giving it to him 4 times and watching him rip off 37 yards to put the Vikings on the Green Bay 11. Walsh, who had already hit from 54 and 37 earlier in the game, handled things from there, converting a 29-yard game-winner as time expired to give the Vikings their 37th point, their 10th win, and their first trip to the playoffs since 2009.

Sunday’s win and the subsequent postseason berth is a remarkable accomplishment for a team coming off a 3-13 season a year ago. This is a team that, prior to the season starting, many thought would be an afterthought by this time. But these Vikings are anything but an afterthought at the moment.

They’re a playoff team.

Any update on Winfield? Was it just his arm bothering him or something else?

We did have Winfield that game though. I think its obvious Winfield is more important to our defense than Cook. His ability to actually tackle someone is huge for us. I hope he returns next week, we are going to need him.

Packers don’t stand a chance. Vikings took it easy on the Pack today as part of a strategy to play them in the playoffs– they did not want to show the Pack all their plays nor embarrass them too much– which may have fueled them up to play harder next week– so, Packer fans be ready– AP for another 200?

I’m on the fence still when it comes to him but today he showed yes he can throw down field accurately and he did one heck of a job managing the game plus no turnovers and he hit receivers on target when he had to. The d played very well today and those that say they gave up to many points think it was the packers and the d never gave up. AP you are the man I took you on my fantasy team when so many said no way. Coaches excellent run to get up to the playoffs. Musgrave I will say you do deserve a chance to coach another year and we are doing this without Harvin. This team will be even better next year no doubt and I know there will be no one asking for Frazier’s head now. We are now the feared team in the playoffs and when we beat gb next week I will be in heaven. I want to see the cheese heads come talk trash now lol.How many see AP as MVP Blair what a pick good vision frazier. How many think we can go all the way we had the toughest schedule the last four games of anyone in the nfl and won them all.

Thanks Mike. You know we can win this playoff game– it won’t be easy, but we can– with players like AP and our D, yes, we can. Then I think we would take on Atlanta– and we can beat them. It is Seattle that concerns me.

  58. By Parkway on Dec 30, 2012 | Reply

I believe doing both would be a good thing Mike. Get Patterson in the first round and get Bowe via FA. Then have Bowe, Patterson, Wright, Jenkins and Simpson if he’ll agree to a short term cheap contract again, or some other complimentary WR for our 4/5 guy.

I predict that Ponder will be the starting QB in 2013 for the Vikings

  60. By Mike B on Dec 30, 2012 | Reply

I agree the way the Vikings are playing now they can beat any team. The Seahawks are also playing their best football right now. The Packers are going to need the home field advantage and I still think the Vikings can win in GB. It’s going to be tough 3 meeting and at GB. I think we can win too.

  61. By Parkway on Dec 30, 2012 | Reply

No matter how far we make it in the playoffs now, the Wilfs need to consider spending some serious $$$ this offseason in FA for complimentary pieces to take us to the superbowl the next few years since we are ready now.

  62. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Dec 30, 2012 | Reply

Not sure about that Mike– I think a lot depends on this playoff game– ultimately Ponder’s worth really rests on how he plays on the road in the playoffs. After all, the purpose of the Vikings product is to get to the Superbowl– if Ponder really does well, I agree with you– otherwise I predict Spielman brings in a good QB to compete for the position.

Great game, kudos to a team effort by players and coaches. I think this was Ponder’s best game of the year. Something like 2099 yards by AP for 2012, second best ever by anyone and second to none coming off knee surgery. Amazing.

Harvin better be in Green Bay on Saturday on the sideline supporting his teammates. I don’t care if he hates Frazier or Musgrave or Ponder. it’s not about that anymore. it’s about supporting the team.

    @rory,

The “experts” will say the Vikings have no shot at beating the Packers at Lambeau. But that is what people have been saying all season long.

Remember the Packers also must come out, and play THEIR best game against the Vikings as well. (Jones believes the Pack did play well today.) There are very few things they could have done better.

In fact as Apollo Creed would say in Rocky II…”THEY WERE JUST PLAIN LUCKY.”

who cares how close the game is what matters is we now find ways to win and to close out wins against texas, chicao, and gb says a lot neither team played scrubs we won and didn’t give up even Ponder fough till the end.The field goals and end zone kick offs were hugh for us no short fields

    @Titus and Spencer,

The Packers played very well in this game. They will have to come out again this Saturday and play just as well.

The question the Vikings must put to them is…Do you feel lucky Packers?

we need to draft all defence this year, pick up a reciver ,and will be great,d tackle,2 linebackers 2 corners,1 saftey, rest special teamers

    _________________________________________________________________

It’s clear CB need to be our defensive priority. We need to be 8 deep on quality DBs. Look at what one injury does to us whether it is Cook or Winfield. Not to mention Winfield will be on his last year of his contract next year and won’t be resigned.

  105. By Frederick Jones on Dec 30, 2012 | Reply

    @VikingsFan1955,

No we don’t care how close the games are.

I am not in agreement that Rodgers was pressured all game long. There were times he had time to look at the blond in the 5th row, scratch his behind, pump twice, and then throw. There is plenty of room for improvement in that area.

It was nice to see Jarius Wright catch the long ball. The Pack will have to watch out for that the next time, and perhaps that will result in an additional long run by Peterson.

  106. By Frederick Jones on Dec 30, 2012 | Reply

    @Titus,

Jones wants to adapt the Titus plan in “finding ways the Vikings can win” rather than looking for negative stuff.

Certainly Frazier would want it that way.

Winfield, Williams, and Allen won’t be with us forever. They are not easy guys to replace. Yes, we are young… but we can win now!!!

  107. By Number1Vike on Dec 30, 2012 | Reply

This years draft was the best in a long time: Kalil, Walsh, Harrison Smith!!!! If Vikings management and coaches can have another draft next year, close to – or as good as this years draft, then all I can say is “LOOK OUT NEXT YEAR – HERE WE COME”!

Did anyone hear AP say that even though he wanted to win more than he wanted to break the record, “next year” he was going for the record again? I think he still has lots of good years left…………like Coach Frazer has said “AP will still be running 10 years from now”

As young a team as we are I am very excited about next year.

I was thinking about AD and how they limited his carries early in the season, so I decided to crunch some numbers.

The first 8 games he carried it an average of 19 a game. In the last 8 games he carried it an average of 24 a game.

That’s 5 carries a game he missed out on in the first 8 games, for a total of 40 total carries in the season he missed out on.

He’s averaged 6 yards a carry this season. You multiply that by the 40 carries he missed out on and you get 240 yards he could have had if not limited earlier in the year. Which would have put his total for the season at 2337 (Destroying D.ickersons Record).

Prediction: Adrian Peterson 2013, 2300-2400 yards in a single season.

I’ll post this one about 20 times. We are a playoff team. It’s time for the Wilfs to open up the checkbook this offseason. AD is still in his prime, our QB should have his breakout season in his 3rd year. I’ll assume at minimum we will get a 1st round next year for Harvin (writing appears to be on the wall with his time in MN)

    Draft:
    1st Round:
If we get a 10-15 pick: Dee Millner (CB)
    Any Lower: Patterson (WR)
Our pick: Patterson or Banks (CB) (contingent on first pick)
    2nd round: Minter (ILB)
    3rd round: Gabe Jackson (OG)
4th round: (from Detroit): Wreh-Wilson (CB)
    Our pick: Jordan Hill (DT)

    Free Agency:
    Dwayne Bowe (WR)
    Rodgers-Cromartie (CB)

This will be a superbowl contender for the next 5-7 years.

Ponder continue tp play error free football. Go Vikings!!!

Very good job today by Ponder and the Vikes! Lets beat the pack in GB if we do that we could very wel go all the way the only team that truly concerns me is GB. We beat frisco, we can beat atlanta and Seattle was a game where Ponder threw for 60 yards, different Viking team. If the vikes play like they did the past 4 weeks no one can beat them in the NFC.

  119. By DelawareDan on Dec 31, 2012 | Reply

I have to admit. I never thought the Vikings would win any of their last four games.

Jefferson, in the vikes secondary, has to go. Horrible defender.

It will be very tough to win at Green Bay. The vikes haven’t won an outdoor road game in awhile. But I hope I’m as wrong as I was over the last four weeks about this team.

great great team win…CP was a big part of it as well (a bit of salt on crow and it’s not that bad); AP…words cannot do him justice…MVP no contest. can we unload AJ (make that PI) Jefferson…what did the brain trust see in him that the redbirds didn’t…geez talk about a liability. 3-13 to 10-6…have to admit, i had my doubts, but…way to go men. next week…we beat the cheesers in lameblow…GB…11-5…Viikes 10-6…the W is purple and they both finish 11-6…GB crying in their curds…Vikes movin on up to the west side…GO VIKES!!!

  123. By vikingbob136 on Dec 31, 2012 | Reply

As a defensive coordinator, your job is to figure out how to put more pressure on Rodgers in the red zone. There were a couple of plays that he had at least 5 to 7 seconds to look at his receivers. I don’t trust anyone in our secondary to be one on one with a WR and neither does our DC.

  124. By vikingbob136 on Dec 31, 2012 | Reply

I don’t feel talking about who we need from the draft is the right thing to do now.
We can over analyze it for three months after the season is over.
Lets focus on how we can win again next week.
Great to keep the Bears out of the playoffs too.

Just think how the Packers defense feels today…After AP unloading on them for 200 yards again yesterday !!!…

And now they have to practice again this whole week…Knowing the BEAST is going to play them again !!!…

Not to mention, now the the regular season record is not in play for AP anymore…AP will be bringing along his “little bro” Gerhart, to smash meat and bone with his powerful running style, also this coming weekend !!!… ;-)

In the freezing cold…The running game with AP & Gerhart will feel like battering rams going into those already softened and sore Packer defenders !!!….hahaha (evil laugh here)…hahahaha…

I expect to see AP & the Albino Rhino, on the field at the same time a lot next Saturday night !!!…And ready to inflict some pain on anyone trying to stop them !!!….hahaha(evil laugh again)hahaha…. ;-)

  126. By OTKalil2012 on Dec 31, 2012 | Reply

I wouldn’t want to be special teams or the defense this week…Because they are going to “get an ear full” from the coaching staff !!!…
On their poor tackling they had yesterday !!!…That was terrible !!!…

Thank goodness AIR BLAIR kicked most of the kick offs for touch-backs…

Because when the Packers brought the ball out…They were getting HUGE chunks of yardage on returns…I expect that problem to be cleaned up by next Saturday… :-(

Yes my wife and I are still together (she’s the packer fan ) but we go through this twice a year, and now thrice!!! Results to the top 6 list predictions,1) weather- VIKES better to run in the wind and cold 2)turnovers- VIKES better to intercept than drop 3) special teams- VIKES no match 4) 1st downs- VIKES AP = 3 runs 1st down 5) redzone results – VIKES Walsh AP choose your poison 6) penalties – VIKES Packer frustration and crying blurs thieer vision and responce. THIS will be their third win or go home talk about presure VIKINGS 30 PACKEERS 20

It sure was a barn-burner for sure yesterday. One of the best games I have watched in a very long time! Kali needs to concentrate on containing “Sister Golden Hair” a little more. Otherwise, O-line provided the support/time for Ponder yesterday. PENALTIES JUST ABOUT DID US IN! Was it 2-3 personal penalties they got yesterday??? At least Rodgers wasnt able to use his infamous hardcount to get them to jump off-sides which was great. We still gave up alot of 10-15yd chunks down the field though. Have to tighten up with the secondary. Again, will have to be very aggressive and start out fast next week, and stay focused. Stay alert to Jennings,Nelson,Jones and keep them covered( x2 they were open for big yardage/touchdowns). Sherells really isnt defense quality and we need to make adjustments in that area. Jared: you better keep after Rodgers, and the tackling better improve in our special teams area. Im soo proud of what this team has accomplished; in all facets of the game. We need to support/stand behind them all the way through this, no matter how far we go in the playoffs. They have literally “worked their arses off” and to go from 3-13 to 10-6 and in the playoffs speaks loads about the determination/grit this team has. I just wish that we would get the respect from commentators that our team so rightly deserves/needs with what they have done, the teams that they have beat, coming together and playing as ONE unit with a common goal. AP; you ARE the man. MVP all the way!! GOOOOOOOOOO VIKINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Packers don’t stand a chance. Vikings took it easy on the Pack today as part of a strategy to play them in the playoffs– they did not want to show the Pack all their plays nor embarrass them too much– which may have fueled them up to play harder next week– so, Packer fans be ready– AP for another 200?”

I’ve heard the people talking all season about the Packers getting support from the refs. I wouldn’t confirm or deny it; I never saw it myself. But yesterday, I saw it. It was really bad how much favortism it seemed GB got from the refs. What is going on here????!!!! Anybody else see the Packers get away with murder yesterday?

  135. By Dueyz on Dec 31, 2012 | Reply

Typically, the refs allow plays to continue as long as possible until it’s unsafe or clearly over. I know they want to let players make plays if possible before they blow the whistle. But yesterdy, when MIN had the ball, I was screaming on my couch at the fact that these refs were letting plays go sooooo long before blowing the whistle. It seemed like they were giving GB’s defense as much time as possible, and endangering the players by letting the plays go so long. Looked dirty to me. When MIN ran the ball and the lines were at a stand still, the refs seemed to give GB extra time to try to strip the ball or injur a MIN player before they would stop the play! I was furious at a couple points were the whistle CLEARLY needed to be blown to stop the play.

Without Winfield this secondary is completely lost…… I’d play him injured over any other guy, he leads that defense and without him they fall apart. Also get Sherells off the the field, great punt returner, but that’s about it.
