A Win The Size Of Texas: Vikings Top Houston, Win 3rd Straight

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 23, 2012 – 5:41 pm

They say everything is bigger in Texas. And that includes NFL upsets. The Vikings earned a huge one on Sunday in the Lone Star State.

The Vikings marched into Reliant Stadium in Houston as 9-point underdogs to the Texans and proceeded to control the game from start to finish along the way to a convincing 23-6 victory that keeps them very much alive in the NFC playoff race.

After holding the Texans to a FG on their first possession, the Vikings responded by driving 78 yards in 8 plays to capture their first score of the game. The drive included a 20-yard dash by Adrian Peterson on the first play, a 27-yard catch-and-run by TE Kyle Rudolph on the third play and a 32-yard perfectly-placed floater from Christian Ponder to Michael Jenkins on 3rd and 6 from the Houston 34. Ponder found Rudolph from 3 yards out on 2nd and goal to finish the drive, and the Vikings led 7-3 midway through the opening quarter.

The teams exchanged punts on each of their next possessions, and then Houston started putting together another nice series near the end of the 1st quarter. But on 2nd and 7 from the Minnesota 28, RB Arian Foster took a handoff and was popped by Vikings LB Jasper Brinkley. Foster coughed up the ball, and Vikings CB AJ Jefferson was there to recover it. The turnover ruined a scoring chance for Houston and led to a Blair Walsh 56-yard FG roughly 5 minutes later; that FG for Walsh set an NFL record for 50-yard FGs in a season (9).

The Vikings extended their lead to 13-3 before halftime, and carried with them into the locker room momentum that would only grow in the 2nd half.

After driving 52 yards in 8 plays and converting a key 3rd and 10 from midfield, the
Vikings offense stalled at the Houston 21. Walsh came on to salvage the drive, converting his third FG of the game and giving the Vikings a 16-3 lead early in the 2nd half.

Neither offense could muster much production the rest of the 3rd quarter, but the Vikings were okay with that because they held a commanding lead and their defense was a step ahead of Houston’s offense all day. Even after a Vikings turnover on a J.J. Watt strip-sack gave Houston possession near midfield, Matt Schaub and Co. continued to be stymied by the Vikings defense.

Exchanged punts continued in the 3rd and early stages of the 4th quarter, finally setting the stage for Ponder to dagger the Texans. The Vikings took possession at their own 36 following a 65-yard punt by Houston. Ponder hit Rudolph for 9 yards on 1st down, then scrambled for 29 yards two plays later to bring the Vikings to the Houston 27. Peterson and Toby Gerhart carried the ball on the Vikings next 5 plays, and then Ponder found Jarius Wright on a shallow crossing pattern to convert a key 3rd-down conversion. A facemask penalty was tacked on, giving the Vikings a 1st and goal from the 3. Gerhart plunged in from there on the next play, finishing a 10-play, 64-yard drive and essentially finishing the Texans for the day.

The Vikings forced a fumble on the next series when Harrison Smith punched the ball from QB T.J. Yates, who had come on to replace starter Matt Schaub. The Vikings recovered and were able to run out the clock from there.

Ponder finished the day with a box score of 16-30 for 174 yards with 1 TD and 0 INTs. He played efficient, smart football, often times avoiding the disastrous play and frequently making a clutch throw to pick up a 1st down or take advantage of busted coverage. Peterson, who entered the game 294 yards from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing mark of 2,105 yards, finished the day with 86 tough yards on 25 grinding carries. He is now 102 yards from the 2,000-yard mark and 207 yards from Dickerson’s record.

The Vikings defense put forth a sensational, dominating effort in limiting a Houston offense that averaged 25.5 points per game coming into the contest to no TDs and just 6 points during the entire game. Schaub was frustrated and ineffective all day, completing 18 of 32 passes for 178 yards with no TDs or INTs. Foster, the AFC’s leading rusher, finished the day with 15 yards on 10 carries; he left the game due to an irregular heartbeat, according to the Texans, and did not return. Smith was the Vikings leading tackler and he also had a forced fumble, while he, Jared Allen, Fred Evans and Antoine Winfield collected sacks.

A key moment in the game came late in the 3rd quarter and was registered by the Vikings defense. A 12-yard completion from Schaub to Kevin Walter put Houston on the Vikings 1. From there, though, Houston was unable to punch it in. Schaub threw incomplete on 1st down, #2 RB Ben Tate was stonewalled by Chad Greenway and Kevin Williams on 2nd down, and then Evans sacked Schaub on 3rd down. Houston had to settle for a FG, but it was a momentous victory for the Vikings at that point to surrender just the 3 points. The Texans never got closer than their own 40-yardline from there on out as the Vikings professionally put away their 3rd straight win.

The win is the Vikings 9th of the season, an impressive number considering they were 3-13 a year ago. With the win, the Vikings began their trek back to Minnesota with an extra bounce in their step and knowing they’ll have a shot to make the playoffs next week with a win over the Green Bay Packers at Mall of America Field and perhaps a little help from other teams in the NFC.

Griffens time was coming. It was only a matter of when. When. Robinson will still be in he mix. Robinson is a great football player. But I think a situational player fits him better any way. Robinson is special.

Great TEAM win for our Vikes!! Spielman and Frazier have done a nice job developing this team. We have a very solid core and we are going to be very tough for years to come! Ponder is showing flashes and is developing into a franchise qb. One more win and we are in the playoffs!! We are definitely moving in the right direction. Great win Vikes!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Viking fans!!

Franchise QB is music to my ears. I believe Ponder can be that. And in my limited opinion he sure looks the part.

WOW! This is exactly the type of win that Frazier designed this team to produce. Run the ball and play great defense. I did not see this coming, I must admit. What a terrific win. Beat the Packers and we are in. I wonder whether or not the Packers will rest their star players next Sunday.

This is what I was hoping for…

If the Vikings beat the Packers…They are in the playoffs…

And I believe that will happen…

And there will be no sitting players for the Packers either…Unless they are not worried about home field advantage…And we no better than that…

Should be quite a game next Sunday…And a game where Cobb may be out with an ankle injury ???…

    GO VIKINGS !!!!….

Maybe AIR BLAIR can finish off the Packers next Sunday…
    With a 65 yard field goal…With only 3 seconds left on the clock… :-)

Greenway even took a step back to gain momentum, then “bull rushed” some O-lineman today…

Just had some nice stunts in the defensive plan…That did a good job confusing Schuab….Schuab was upset all day long… :-)

Our defense just keeps getting better and better. Harrison Smith was great today, and a fantastic pick in April. I’m so glad we moved back into the 1st round to get him.

I’m not a Musgrave fan, but he really mixed it up today. A couple of times I thought run for sure and he went to the air.

Great win, ton of momentum, lets go get a win. I don’t think any team wants to play our defense in the playoffs.

2nd straight TEAM WIN in a row! Defense looks better ever week, and DOMINATED the Texans ALL 4 QUARTERS!

Would have been nice to see All Day break 100, but I still think he can reach the record next week. He deserves that record, AND MVP! We wouldn’t be in this position without him!

And, probably Ponders best game since early in the season! KUDOS!!!

The Vikings embarassed the Texans while exposing them. Now the Vikings can pretty much go wherever they want.I posted yesterday Ponder would have his best day since his early season form.Oh,and that Watt would be stifled. The Vikings are red hot right now and firing at the perfect time of the season.Their transition since the Chicago win has been apparent as they keep excelling, having made last week’s lesser opponent St.Louis look like a much more formidable adversary than Houston. The Vikings will be very, very difficult to beat at home next week, despite what the perpetually wrong media keeps saying about mighty Minnesota. When will they see?Vikings will win handily at home.At least now the team finally can’t be denied serious consideration as contenders in the playoff scenario.Vikings will continue to surprise.

We have a average offence but a great defense and they say thats what win’s games. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikings_Stadium the Vikings are going to play all of 2013 and maybe some of 2014, O-well, we need all the fans we can get into the dome. The fans at the Seattle game made so much noise that it made a big impact on the game; the announcers were saying that it was nosier then the Metrodome. So show up and rock the dome. SKOL Vikings

Well, Parkway, like a typical conspiracy theorist buff, you only see the pieces and parts you want to see so your story makes sense. Ponder made amazing plays today and the stats themselves do not reveal that– nor that he played against the possible number one seed of the AFC, a 12-2 team with the top sack leader in their house. The announcers said at one point Ponder is like Houdini escaping the sacks. Did you see Ponder throwing with Watt all over him, half of his body collapsing to the ground? Ponder played great today. Be a man and admit it.

We just beat a 12-2 team at their house– only the Packers and Patriots had beaten them– we beat them convincingly– the Texans scored six points– one field goal per half — AND some of you still complain? HUH? We were 3-13 last year–and now just a win away from 10-6 and the playoffs. How can anyone with a sane mind complain? I am outta here!

  133. By Parkway on Dec 24, 2012 | Reply

He played a good game today. It’s just really immature that the apologists come in here and try to “rub it in” that he didn’t totally suck and give the game away. Be realistic. He did the things any NFL QB should be able to do.

He made a few nice runs and a few good throws. He also fumbled the ball at midfield and threw an ill-advised pass which luckily simpson caught and another one that was dropped by a DB.

I will say I liked the timing route that was thrown to Simpson. That actually takes some skill and it’s what he was supposed to be good at coming out of college. Need to see more of that.

  137. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Dec 24, 2012 | Reply

No one is rubbing anything in– it is immature and counterproductive for you naysayers to bash a young QB when you have no say at all to daily operations at the Vikings organization. None of us are rubbing it in– but we sure are curious where all the naysayers are when proven wrong— and now hide behind the he is doing what he should be doing— HA HA HA HA– so next time our QB consistently wins– do not praise him or cheer him on, because that is what he should be doing– HA HA HA HA — the logic of some folks.

Huge upset today, and I picked the Vikings to win on NFL.com. I don’t get to see very many games since I live in California, but when I saw the end of game notification from my ESPN app it made my day. Been a Ponder supporter all season because he has flashes of greatness that, given proper time and guidance, could make him an “elite” QB. Going from a 3-13 season last year to a playoff worthy team this year is nothing short of amazing. Given our home record this season, I see no reason the Vikings should lose this weekend. We lost to the Bears at Soldier field and served them a loss at the Metrodome a few weeks later. The best part is…I’m going to be in my home state of Minnesota this weekend to watch the swift beating the Packers are about to recieve. SKOL VIKINGS!!!

And unlike Chilly or dare I even mention Tice, it would appear Frasier has complete control of the lockeroom, and he has his team believing in each other, and they’re starting to believe in the system.

And not to make people think of August and warm times, but anyone who followed training camp, what was Greg Childs camp like? I know it was awful that we lost him, but it seemed like he had all the buzz going forward. Any chance he might be one of the missing pieces?

the downward spiral began when ponder announced his seeing what is now his new wife I think now that he has had his honeymoon and all is ok on the home front he’s concentrating more on football. I’m still not sold on him but I feel the way he has played the last 3 games he has deserved the job for another yr and has the ability to be the qb he started the yr out as. We have the team we just need harvin healty and a solid number one reciever that will help us go all the way,Again I give frazier the credit for holding the team together and not folding when it got bleak.

  164. By vikingsfan1955 on Dec 24, 2012 | Reply

wow frazier made a mistake with the clock YES that makes him a no good coach lets put every coach in a stadium that has made a bad call managing the clock at the end of a close game and shot him and every coach in the nfl would be dead. This man has made this team a contender when we have only one star healthy and he has never given up in a game. I have seen this team fold many times over the year but they are fighting now like never before and trust me they believe in frazier and he will make us even better next yr

This team has evolved over the past (3) weeks now. It’s so great to see this happening. We have to give them ALL of our support as we did yesterday. GB WILL GO DOWN THIS COMING SUNDAY, MARK MY WORDS. Special teams !!!…Way to go Preiffer and friends !!!…

This is a team hitting on all cylinders !!!…Could the Vikings use a little more talent in some positions on the football field…Sure…

But it is becoming pretty evident this season…The coaching staff is getting as much as can be expected…From the players we have on the field right now !!!

And that the players are doing all they can also…Buying into Frazier’s system…

This Vikings team has a bright future !!!…

After watching this team the past few weeks…
I am believing in Frazier & Musgrave myself…

When Childs and Wright were first drafted…They mentioned the fact, as both were from the same team…

That it was Childs who had the highest upside of either Player between them…If….Childs could stay healthy ???…That of course didn’t happen…

Childs expects to be playing football for the Vikings next season…Or at least hopes too…Childs said he will be coming back to fight for a roster spot…And as well as AP has come back from his torn ACL, and other players in recent history…I see Childs doing just that…

Wright is a very good rookie WR !!!…

Wow, though…It was pretty clear…Simpson is still not close to 100% with getting back his speed ???…There is no burst there…Simpson is running as slow as Jenkins right now…But like I have said before at the WR position…It is, what it is…

tell me what you think, I know the qb is the glamore job of the nfl but to kick the way our guy is making field goals and touch backs on kick offs amd how many 9 field goals of over 50 yards in a row come on he has to be atleast be mentioned as a rookie of the yr candidate. I know he can’t win it but when has a rookie kicker come in like this and the kid from Dame is a beast so we have our onw rookies that should have atleast been mentioned as possibilities.

go vikes go vikes go vikes……..challange to ponder and the D to go get another win….we know the o line and ALLLLLLL DAYYYYYYYY will bring it

We will beat the Packers and heres why,,,,Defense is playing with a purpose, playing together, staying in their gaps and mixing up playcalling ,Adrian will run wild just like the first game,we are playing better on O line and its really showing run and pass, Christian is now a married man with a wife to support ,H e wont let us or her down, error free game by Ponder were in Go VIKINGS KICK THERE BUTT

vikes played a very good team and did a great job… i’am still not a ponder fan. that was his best game in many weeks. i’ll take that one. but 174 yds. and 50 percent completions I don’t think i’am impressed yet. give me about 65 percent and 250 yds . then i’ll say i’am sorry. and way to go…. defense is making the way for the wins right now. and Peterson. litte more help would be awesome

its nice to see this team where they are at. its been a strange season. all i have to say is, if infact ponder is going to be the man, then it is time to let joe webb play some reciever. what would be the point of having such a talented athlete on your team if your not going to use him? if they didnt have the confidence in him being the QB, then they should have the decency to put the man on the field to contribute. i just hate to see good talent go to waste.i can honestly say i never thought that we would be in the position that we are in, but then again its just like this team to put us fans in this place once again. that is, in a position of hope. i’ve um we’ve all been right here so many times. 87 we were an inch away. 98 we could taste it, it was so close. 2000 just couldnt show up. 2009 wow! farve? just to self absorbed to throw the ball to the open man. not that i think that we are bowl bound by any means. but this teem has always had a way on letting us down. i do want to thank the state for doing the right thing in voting in a new stadium, had the vikings been lost to another state i probly would have givin up on watching the game completely. i will always be a viking, not just a fan. so i will say this with all conviction, can we stomp a liitle GB ass!? and for once start a new tradition? that of one that is filled with the hope that someday that trophy will be hoisted in the town that i will always call home….. marry christmas to all, and a happy newyear. from, montgomery williams in miami… peace

I too would live to see Webb at WR if he’s not goin to get to play qb! I believe he will be better than what we have at the position! Look at Cobb, brad smith, they did fine with some coaching
