Watt’s The (Real) Deal? Texans DE Having Historic Season

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 21, 2012 – 7:37 am

No offensive player in the NFL is having a more impressive season than Adrian Peterson. He’s the NFL’s leading rusher by a 433-yard margin over Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch, he’s set to challenge Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards over the season’s final two games, and he’s on a string of 8 consecutive 100-yard games and has rushed for the same number of yards (1,313) in that time that Houston’s Arian Foster has the entire season.

The Vikings are going to need the NFL’s best offensive player to be at his best on Sunday, though, because they are heading to Houston to take on the Texans. No defensive player in the NFL is having a more impressive season than Texans DE J.J. Watt. He is tied for the NFL lead with 19.5 sacks, and he’s the first player in NFL history to record 15.0 sacks and 15 passes defensed in the same season.

“His domination. He really dominates,” Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier said when asked what stands out about Watt. “He’s hard to block one-on-one, he has outstanding quickness, he plays hard all the time and, not only is he good against the run, but he’s an excellent pass rusher with the sacks that he’s gotten and the way he bats down balls. He’s just a very, very good player who can take over a game. You don’t often see those guys and he’s one of them.”

Watt’s ability to dominate is best illustrated by pointing out the variety of statistical categories he leads for his team. Aside from sacks, Watt leads the Texans in tackles (100), tackles for loss (33), QB hits (38), passes defensed (15), forced fumbles (3) and fumble recoveries (2). According to information released by the Texans, Watt has been a part of 84 plays this season that have resulted in zero or negative yards. And it’s not just the number of impact plays he can make, it’s the situation(s) in which he makes them. Of those 84 zero or negative-yardage plays, 51  have come on passing plays, 33 on rushing plays, 25 inside FG range and 6 have come in overtime. Also, 42 of them have come on 1st down, which puts the opposing offense at a severe disadvantage on 2nd and 3rd down.

“He’s one of the best players in the NFL, especially at his position,” Vikings QB Christian Ponder said. “They’re going to put him in different spots to create plays, and whether he is inside at the tackle position or outside on the end and standing up or he’s down, he’s creating a lot of plays, obviously. He’s getting pressure but he’s also knocking balls down and he’s a guy that we definitely have to account for.”

On this week’s edition of Vikings Live From Winter Park, C John Sullivan called Watt the best defensive player the Vikings will see this season and stressed the importance for Vikings offensive linemen to stick with their blocks on Watt each play to prevent him from finding a way to impact the game.

As if defending Watt wasn’t enough, the Texans defense is filled with a bunch of other playmakers, especially along the defensive line. Shaun Cody is a run-stuffing nose tackle, Antonio Smith is an 8-year veteran at DE with 21.0 sacks in 62 games as a Texan, and both NT Earl Mitchell and DE Jared Crick provide more than adequate depth and production. Behind the talented front 7, the Texans feature a secondary that plays a lot of man coverage, and does it very well.

“We expect them to play man coverage and the defensive backs are good at it and we’re going to have to win outside,” Ponder said. “Obviously, I think their number one goal is going to be to stop Adrian (Peterson), obviously. So, we’re going to have to take advantage of that in the passing game and we’ll see what they end up doing.”

All-in-all, it’s a big challenge for the Vikings offense, and a challenge they’ll be up for on Sunday with so much on the line.

“I think everyone is focused,” Ponder said. “You can feel it in the locker room. It’s almost like a playoff atmosphere for us and it’s going to be a hostile environment, obviously, it’s a team with a great record, tough place to play. They’re playing for a lot. They’re playing for a bye and home-field advantage so they have a lot on their plate and we know they’re going to be focused and it’s going to be a fun one. It means a lot for this whole team and it means a lot for me. It’s probably the biggest game of my career and we’re excited for it.”

Nice of youhaul to mention our wrecking ball, J.J. Watt !
We will welcome you Snowbirids from Iceland ( AKA frozen-Minnie)

We will lay out the welcome mat for your newly wed Ponder.
We will take his mind off his new hairy squeeze.

J.J. Watt wants the sack record the same way your Petterson wants the run record. Maybe both will prevale Sunday. Great presents for X-Mas.

Watt is playing “out of his mind” for sure. He’s the real deal. But our “O” line is moving like snow plow trucks through the snow for AP in the run game. Will Houston have an answer? I say good luck. Our “O” looks to be getting “sneaky good”.

Thanks DRS. All I can say is “If Percy Harvin leaves, So do I”.

I have been a Viking Fan thru thick and thin for many years.

I could no longer surport a team that has the likes of a Frazier, and Mustgraves.

With the exception of the hated Greenbay Packers, I would then support the flag of which team obtains him. I hope that Joe Webb would go to the same team!!!

Cmon really man??? I like Harvin too but leaving a team cause your player left is just ludicrous! Thats like saying that all the Colts fans dropped out and went to Denver becuase that is where Manning is… And even for a QB that pretty much built that franchise over the last 10 years would be slightly more understandable. But a WR????? REALLY????

    C’mon man!!!!

Frazier never stated abutting about a clash so I’m not going to believe any article.
I’m sure if they clashed we would’ve known by now, Harvin is not another Moss.
Moss was great but he showed up when he wanted to, Harvin plays his heart out even when we’re getting blown out.
If there was any arguments I don’t think we would have to wait this long to here about it.

Some avg to bad WR and a 4th or 5th round pick, those suggestions are down right insulting. If the rest of the league knew Harvin was up for trade, how many wouldn’t at least look into seeing what it would take to get him? Maybe a handful? So we could get more than just some scr aps for him that’s ridiculous.

  31. By OTKalil2012 on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

Well, the bleacher report on Harvin is reporting old news…

And they are also off base on what the Vikings will get trading Harvin…

Spielman will get “at least” a first round pick for Harvin…Or Harvin will sit…Plain and simple…

Spielman will not give Harvin away !!!…

I think there is only one team that might be involved with players, a possibility in being traded ???…

That would be Arizona…Why not do Gerhart and Harvin..For Fitzgerald and a late round pick ???…

If not for Fitz…I would say trading Harvin to any other team would just involve draft pick compensation…Most likely being 1st and 3rd rounder…

That bleacher report stuff…Is WAY off base…A Joke !!!

  32. By Smith22DMVP on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

All I know is if we have a draft comparable to this past one, our team will be looking VERY good

  33. By VF209 on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

in my opinion bleacherreport isn’t giving enough value for Harvin…..I would not want any of those receivers in trade for him with a later round pick. the niners just drafted a receiver in the 1st round last year….AJ Jenkins don’t know if he is any good but maybe they would give up that kid if he is any good and a draft pick or maybe they would keep him and give up crabtree? but really i would rather keep Harvin….he is a proven play maker and has proved he can play through injury as well as being a dynamic kick returner…..And with Ponder’s inability to get the ball down field I think a guy like Harvin is s much needed asset for our QB….I mean who do we have that can make people miss like Harvin can at receiver?

  34. By Troutdaddy on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

It is going to be a tough game, but I have a good feeling about it and that the Vikes ared going to open the eyes of people this weekend. The fact that they know Peterson is ona rampage may just be the ticket Ponder needs to throw the ball… Let’s hope whatever game plan is in place, that the Vikes can execute it well and come out on top!

I don’t believe those reports, until I hear it from Frazier or anyone within the organization I don’t want to gear anything I’m staying positive.

It was an injury that they tight he could recover from ago they have him time to see if he could make it back.
He was placed on ir because they didn’t want to risk any further damage, that’s happened in football and basketball before.

Gut feeling Cook and Simpson will have major contributions in this game…In the form of “game changing plays”…

Cook being hungry to make a play off of injury…And Simpson, I believe is getting back to full speed…And no one but the Vikings coaching staff, knows that…
Might catch the Texans off guard for some big plays…

My take on Harvin is this…..he demanded a trade during preseason, was seen starring daggers at Ponder nearly every game (because of under/over throws) until he got hurt. Had the screaming episode on the sideline with Frasier, then hurt, then IR, then surgery. He does not believe in or want to play with Ponder……bottom line. I could be off……but I have a feeling.

For those who think Harvin has such an attitude problem and think he will be more of a “diva” if we give him a big contract: the 1500espn article had a good point that the contract should, and most likely would, be heavily incentive laced. Meaning he doesn’t perform, he doesn’t get paid. He gets injured, he doesn’t get paid. So he would have to be on the field being productive to get paid. So I don’t see that as a problem.

  46. By realviking on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

If he doesn’t want to play with Ponder who can blame him.
As receivers you need a quarterback who can do more then hand offs.

Harvin was leading the league in receptions simply because every play was designed for him that’s why.
Look at our offense right now they still call the same plays everything is close to the line, maybe they just don’t trust our quarterback to do anything else.
I would say the playbook is difficult but Ponder is suppose to be a genius if Musgrave was so called the person who developed Matt Ryan then why is it so hard with Ponder.

We had Green Bay easily won at Lambeau — would have been so with just a teeny bit better play at QB– heck we were up at halftime and threatening to go up 21-10 at the start of the third quarter after AP’s 48 yd run. Instead of doing there job they just wanna see AP run 30 times, just like the coaches I don’t think they would call a pass play if they didn’t have to. Why can’t everyone do what they get paid to do

To be honest I really don’t like Percy harvin I know he is the best at WR we have but he is not a true WR. I would prefer a Julio Jones n aj green type but Percy doesnt suppose to be #1 receiver in a team^.^ just my point of view and now everyone is going to explode on me thats why I didnt want to say this. like he looks so good right now because he is all we have and I personally wouldn’t want vikings to depend on him at WR and give him to much money that we can’t get another legit one.

Spence…prolly spot on with those numbers. We can all agree that the numbers he put up against the 49ers were not gaudy (but great for him), nothing but a fluke. If you look at ALL his games it is hard to disagree that his numbers are nothing but 2nd/3rd string numbers.

  105. By autobon7 on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

21 for 35 for 198 yards and, most importantly, no turnovers or sacks. Reason I brought up the 9ers game is because they also have a very good defense. Even backups can have a good game every now and then. And no I don’t want Sanchez, Vick, Kolb, Flynn, or Smith.

  106. By Parkway on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

You know as much as everyone is saying we need a DT to beef up our run defense…. we have the 13th ranked run defense versus our 23rd ranked pass defense.

So although getting a beast of a DT will help our pass rush, a quality LB that can cover will help both. We are also in need of some CBs.

  107. By autobon7 on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

” Four NFL sources told ESPN Twin Cities’ Tom Pelissero there was a “heated exchange” between Frazier and Harvin in front of Vikings players and staff members in the training room before the decision was made.”

and right after that said : “one source said the team and Harvin’s agent already had started talking about placing Harvin on IR before the incident. But that doesn’t mean other factors didn’t eventually come into play”.

I am pasting exactly so please excuse the starting of the last quoted sentence with the word But. It is clear to me that this is a non story content wise and involves sheer speculation.

I tend to believe that second altercation did happen with Frazier and Harvin…

Because before trading Harvin…And losing a good player like him…

A smart coach would have “tried” to get under Percy’s skin…In front of players and staff…Seeing IF he was foolish enough AGAIN of losing his temper…To that of a similar situation that occurred in the Seahawk game…

I think in all probability…Harvin failed his test (from at least what 4 unnamed sources have said)…

If I am Zygi…Harvin isn’t going to get paid any 10-15 million dollars of Guaranteed money…Just to cause more problems for my team…imo…

And also do not see a young head coach and GM backing their future on a problem child either…

Harvin is running out of friends…The ones that matter…
The people that WORK with him…The ones who PAY him…

The Vikings are going to have to double cover on JJ Watt for sure, cause Loadholdt isnt going to do without several holding penalties on him alone. Not the way to make progress. We have to get Schaub out of his rythm from the get go. He likes to stay in the pocket for the most part, plant, throw. When he throws it’s mostly to the left side of the field. Cook will have his hands full for sure, but as with the Lions game, they might have to double on Johnson as well. DONOT let them get 10-15 yd.plays in the middle of the field. PENALTIES have to kept to a minimum for sure. Defense needs to contain Foster/ would like to see some good ole’ fashioned blitzes on Schaub. Take them out of the game early is the key to this game. O-line needs to step it up and provide protection for Ponder, running lanes for AP,opening up holes in their Defensive line. Ponder needs to have quicker reactions/quicker throws if he is going to do anything in this game. The Texans are going to stack 8-9 in the box and Ponder&Co. are going to have to use that to their advantage. This team knows very well, I’m sure, what they need to make happen tomorrow. I believe it’s going to be closer than people imagine, BUT I think it is a winnable game for our VIKES regardless of the critics/experts opinions. GOOD LUCK TO AP/Vikings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ponder May not be a great starter at this time but he has helped us win 8 games, not bad compared to last year. Remember it takes a team to win or lose, so if they are coming up roses or just stinking the place up, whose fault is that, the teams I would say.

This team HAS improved over the last (2) weeks. They have been playing as a cohesive unit. WE have to continue playing the aggressor in this game. WE need to show them that WE arent going to allow them to run all over us. They need to go into Houston with that “hungry” attitude and play rock-solid football. I’m still out on Ponder until he steps up and starts playing the all that “hunger” that the rest of the team seems to have. If, in some way he can stay out of the clutches of JJ Watt & Co. AND if he can make something happen when its needed? That will be the telling factor in this game. He will have to grow up very fast on Sunday for sure. I still like our chances though. Maybe the moon will align just right; we just don’t know yet. WE AS FANS need to give them ALL of our support. I’d love nothing better than to read headlines “VIKES UPSET THE TEXANS AT HOME”. Of course there has been improvement over last year. THAT’s why we have won 8 games. It just hasn’t come at the QB position, and that is why we have lost 6, and every game since the Bears has been sudden death to our playoff hopes.

    O-line? Improved.
    Secondary? Improved.
    Kicking? Improved.
RBs? Improved as a result of improved O-line.
    Receiving? Worse despite improved O-line.
    QB? Worse despite improved O-line.

Are we going to make any changes on the O-line for next year? Most assuredly – collectively there is room for improvement.
Are we going to make any changes in the secondary for next year? Most assuredly – collectively there is room for improvement.

Are we going to make changes with the receivers? Most assuredly!! Collectively there is room for improvement.

So, we are going to change aspects of the team that have been improved in order to further improve them, and we are going to make changes in areas that have gotten worse, so the question is, why in the world would we continue to accept mediocre play from the most important position on the offense?

I definately understand peoples frustration with Ponder, I admit I am also very frustrated. I differ from many in the fact that I feel we should allow him this ONE last offseason to improve, and give him a more legitamite WR corp to work with. If he gets both and can not elevate his game then he should by all means be gone. I do understand the frustration, and dont blame fans that want him gone now, those are just my personal thoughts on it.

But Smith – how much is it going to cost to acquire a corps of talented WRs vs acquiring one good QB?

  293. By Smith22DMVP on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

That depends I suppose. It would be very expensive to find a good QB unless we have one fall into our laps at the draft, I am not an expert on this class but isnt it suppossed to be light on good QB prospects? I hate the bandaid method, so I am strongly against any older QB like Vick or something. It is surely a tough spot for our team with how close we are to being elite.

  294. By Smith22DMVP on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

I think that we should adress the WR position this year. If ponder fails, then bring in a new QB who will be walking into a team that has everything. If we bring a new QB in before the WR issue is resolved, well its not fair to any qb to judge off that in my opinion. If we get solid WR’s this offseason and then have to burn a high pick, or trade up the following draft, then that young QB would be coming into a VERY good situation. Idk though, if I had all the answers I would be getting paid by a team to do this lol

  295. By northwoodsv2 on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

We had a group of largely no-name generic receivers (Berrian, Harvin, Rice, Johnson, Lewis, Raynaud) at that time.

But, what we also had was a HOF QB that used them effectively.

  296. By Parkway on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

Well said northwoods, Rudolph and Harvin have all star talent, they are complimented by the best RB in the league. We shouldn’t need 5 all star WR plus 2 of the best TE in the league AND the best RB in the league just so our QB can get 100 yards a game.

    Come on people.

  297. By northwoodsv2 on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

If Ponder fails again, how will we know we have good WRs?

  298. By Smith22DMVP on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

Its not realistic in my opinion to expect the same results out of ANY young unproven QB as you would get from a HOF QB even if that young QB will grow into a HOF QB. Confidence is so huge for a young QB. If you cant trust your WRs its hard for a young low expeirience guy to play with the confidence needed to make the risky long plays.

  299. By northwoodsv2 on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

We could have good WRs right now.

  300. By Smith22DMVP on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

Like is was saying though, these are just MY views, I do not expect everyone to agree with me. I definately do see the side Parkway and northwoods argue. I just have my views on how long a QB should get to develope.

Also, northwoods, that is a very good point on the WRs you just made. I guess the only way to know is if we brought in a proven WR like Bowe or something, which I am all for. Idk how realistic that is though.

  301. By Smith22DMVP on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

We could, but I just know i have seen enough drops from them and lack of certain abilities that make me not trust them i guess. NOT saying I trust Ponder right now either, but at this point I am more inclinde to give him one last offseason to make adjustments since he has only had one.

  302. By northwoodsv2 on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

But it IS realistic to expect a 1st round draft pick to be able to complete a throw beyond 10 yards more than 2x a game. It IS realistic to expect him to be able to lead a target. It IS realistic to expect him to be able to look at more than the intended receiver. It IS realistic to expect him to throw a sideline pass so it doesn’t land 4 yards out of bounds.

Because they also have those expectations in college.

  303. By northwoodsv2 on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

Yeah, if we could land Bowe or Fitzgerald that might show us something – especially since teams would think “All they got is Bowe (or Fitzgerald) so let’s double him all game long”

If he can’t get the ball to either of them…….

  304. By Smith22DMVP on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

agian those are valid points, like i said, i also am frustrated with his play and do not fully trust him. but i still think he should get a second offseason to try and adjust. just my opinion. Overall I trust how our managment has been putting this team together and will go with what ever they decide. IF they do switch up QB for next year i just hope it is someone young with an upside.

  305. By Smith22DMVP on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

yea if brought in one of those guys, and after a few games its the same as this season he needs to be riding pine. at that piont, he has game time, he has had 2 offseasons, and has talent everywhere around him.

I watched a vikings show after one of the games some weeks back– one of the hosts was a former superbowl player– cannot remember his name, but some of you experts would know– he was on the defense for the Colts in the 2007 win. He made it very clear– was extremely adamant to stress the point of how much fans affect the players. He said that the team needs the fans support not criticisms. I could not agree more– maybe some of you will listen when it comes from a top player in the league. So next time you boo one of our players or dissect his play on the sidelines in the guise of helping the team– think on what your role as a fan really is– true fans arise!

It cant wait until the playoff run is over? maybe Monday? we havent been under .500 all season and Ponder has taken a beating. Some of which was deserved and some wasnt. Support the team at least until there is no playoff picture because attacking a winning team is ridiculous.

I got hired with a 3 month probationary period to produce a profit. Ponder has had 2 years, and he DOES NOT SHOW IMPROVEMENT. After several months of substandard performance at my job, despite correctional efforts from staff, you better believe I would be hearing it from co-workers who are sick and tired of picking up my load, sick and tired of missing bonuses because I can’t make productivity.

You also fail to recognize that his coaches have more than likely been working with him ad nauseum on his ……. faulty areas. Do you really believe that us lowly bloggers are the only ones that can spot his deficient play? And the people that are paid 6 figures to do just that, CAN’T? Delusional.

Shawn. Nope, I’ve given up on righting the ship this season, as it’s far too late. If we limp into the playoffs, it won’t be because of #7. Has he helped? At times. Has he hindered? Many more times.

  321. By northwoodsv2 on Dec 22, 2012 | Reply

I have no faith in Ponder as our QB at this time – he would have to seriously step it up over a number of games consistently to change my mind – but the one thing that has not waivered is my desire for the Vikings to win.
