6 Vikings-Texans Storylines To Watch

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 19, 2012 – 7:24 am

The Vikings will travel south this weekend for a matchup against the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium on Sunday. The matchup features plenty of sizzle, with several players chasing individual records and with major playoff implications on the line for both teams.

Let’s take a look at 6 of the storylines we’ll be chasing this week on vikings.com…

1. Playoff Implications Both the Vikings and Texans will enter Sunday’s game looking for a win to improve their playoff standing. The Texans have already qualified for the postseason by virtue of their AFC-best record of 12-2 and subsequent AFC South division title. But they’re looking for a win this week because with a victory over the Vikings they will secure home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. The Vikings, meanwhile, are among a bushel of teams competing for a wild card in the NFC playoffs. Entering Week 16, they are the NFC’s #6 seed, but that’s a bit deceiving. The Vikings do not control their own destiny, and there are so many possible scenarios that the Vikings could in theory win-out and not make it, or lose-out and wind up making it. The bottom line is the Vikings are looking to win their remaining games and then hope for help by way of as many losses as possible from the likes of Chicago, Dallas, New York, Seattle and Washington.

2. Adrian Peterson Pursues History With two games to plan, Adrian Peterson is 188 yards from becoming just the 7th player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season and he’s 294 yards from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record for 2,105 yards. To top either mark would be an impressive accomplishment with just two games to play. But with Peterson having 8 straight 100-yard games and averaging 164.1 yards per game over that span, you can see why everyone’s eyes will be on Peterson over the next two weeks.

3. The Texans Have a Good RB, Too While everyone else watches Peterson pursue immortality, the Vikings defense is charged with making sure Texans RB Arian Foster doesn’t steal the show. Foster is the Texans all-time leading rusher, he leads the AFC with 1,313 yards rushing this season and he leads the NFL with 16 total TDs this season. He is coming off a 100-yard outing last week against the Indianapolis Colts, he has 3 straight 1,000-yard seasons and with 1 TD will become just the 6th player in NFL history to score 50 TDs in 50 games or less; Sunday will be Foster’s 50th career game.

4. Vikings Look To Become Road Warriors Playing on the road has been a challenge for Vikings teams the past few seasons, but right now Leslie Frazier’s team is trying to turn around their road woes to become road warriors. The Vikings collected a big win earlier this season on the road, defeating the Detroit Lions in Week 4 to move to 3-1. Then last week in St. Louis the Vikings throttled the Rams along the way to their 8th win of the season. If the Vikings can find a way to win at Reliant Stadium on Sunday, they’ll pick up their 3rd road win of the season and will take a big step toward making a postseason appearance just one season removed from going 3-13 (2-6 on the road).

5. Texans DE J.J. Watt Chases the NFL’s Sack Record Last season Vikings fans watched as Jared Allen came excruciatingly shy of breaking the NFL’s single-season sack record of 22.5 sacks (Michael Strahan). Allen had 22.0 sacks last season, dominating opposing offensive linemen on a weekly basis. This season, a pair of defenders are closing in on the mark as well, and one of them will go against the Vikings on Sunday. Texans DE J.J. Watt is in the midst of one of the most impressive seasons by a defender in League history. He’s currently tied for the NFL lead in sacks with 19.5, and he is the only player in NFL history with 15.0 sacks and 15 passes defensed in the same season. To win on Sunday, the Vikings would be wise to make sure Watt doesn’t challenge the NFL’s single-season sack record until next week.

6. Something’s Gotta Give: Vikings Rushing Offense vs. Texans Run Defense The Vikings rank 4th in rushing and they’re featuring the NFL’s best RB in his best season. The Texans boast the NFL’s 5th-ranked rushing defense and they’ve allowed the fewest rushing TDs in the NFL this season. It’s a classic example of strength vs. strength, and on Sunday something will have to give. There’s one angle that favors the Vikings, though. Houston ranks just 12th in yards per attempt allowed (4.1), teams run the ball just 22.5 times per game against them, and they’ve seen an opposing team run the ball 30+ times against them just twice. Meanwhile, the Vikings rank 1st in yards per attempt (5.5), they’ve averaged 29.1 rushes per game and they’ve run the ball 30+ times on 5 occasions this season.

Its going to be very hard to beat these two playoff teams passing for 100 to 150 yards. Even with AP rushing for the record books your not going to win games in the NFL passing the ball like that!!!

The thing that doesn’t make sense is the same fans who says trade Harvin because he yelled at Frazier are the same fans who wants Alex Smith.

If I recall Alex Smith is the same quarterback who yelled at Singleterry during a game and refused to listen.

They say Moss couldn’t be tamed but he looks tamed to me at the 49ers.

BB7 I just dont get how some people can think Percy is a “cancer”.

I dont see him talking up a storm with the media, Or constantly arguing with a player/coach on the sideline, or even doing sit ups in front of cameras on his front lawn.

Fellow Viking fans, we’ve been down that road before with other teams QB’s, no more!!! Let’s develop our guy and draft another QB until we get it right!!! We like all teams in the NFL passed on Russell Wilson until he was drafted in the third round!!! There are other QB’s like Wilson in the draft, you just have to do your homework and yes, be a little lucky!!!!

A cancer doesn’t win the Korey Stringer award (good guy award)

If Harvin finished this season he would’ve been an MVP candidate, he was before injury.

Many analysts consider him the best receiver in the NFL because you won’t find another receiver who can do the things Harvin does.

  21. By Champ Henson on Dec 19, 2012 | Reply

If frazier would have pulled Ponder during his bad games we may have won one or two more games and wouldn’t have to e worring so much about making the playoffs.

Harvins YAC yards are unbeatable, he’s so quick!

I would have no interest in Alex Smith at all!! Prior to Harbaugh showing up in SF, he was a bust!!!

  24. By realviking on Dec 19, 2012 | Reply

And for those who think Ponder made Harvin three best receiver before he got injured that’s hilarious.

Look at our passing game since garcons injury. Do we even have one?

If he made Harvin then why can’t he make another one.

Jarius Wright was considered to be a Harvin clone so why can’t Ponder make him look like Harvin.

Harvin made Ponder look ok by turning the negative plays into positives and now that he’s gone we see Ponder for what he is. Garbage

  25. By 61Vikings on Dec 19, 2012 | Reply

If Percy Harvin is a cancer, we need more cancers like that on this team!!!

Reasons why Houston will not rest.

    1. Kill Vikings’ playoff hopes.
    2. Prevent AP from getting the record.
    3. Attain new sack record.
    4. It would seriously cheese their fans.
    5. A win would clinch home-field through the playoffs.

2009 Brett Favre ( decent QB) completed 60 pas ses to Harvin in 15 games that season…

2011 Ponder (decent QB) has completed 62 pa sses to Harvin in 8 games this season…

2011 Ponder has completed 14 pa sses to Wright in 5 games…Multiply that number by 3…Wright would have 42 pass completions in 15 games…

Brett Favre completed 60 pa sses in 2009 to Harvin…

By projecting this years stats of Harvin…

Ponder would have completed more than 120 pa sses for over 1,300 yards to Harvin, if he would have stayed healthy for a full season…

And that makes Ponder a bad QB ???…

Back your statements with FACT !!!…

The VAST majority of those yards came after the catch. Which then has nothing to do with Ponder. Which has EVERYTHING to do with Harvin.

  35. By northwoodsv2 on Dec 19, 2012 | Reply

And you still haven’t come up with an answer as to why Ponder hasn’t turned anyone else on the team into a Harvin now that Harvin is not playing.

  36. By OTKalil2012 on Dec 19, 2012 | Reply

That is the way the play is DESIGNED !!!…

For the OC to put the player in the BEST POSITION TO SUCCEED !!!!…

Does Ponder ever pump fake a DE out of his pass rush, by making him jump up, thinking its a pass, like a Roethlisberger or Rodgers ???…

Does Ponder sell the run by staying low in a crouch like Brady, getting back in his drop…Then pop up straight into throwing form..Ready to release that pass…

Does Ponder sell the stretch play…Getting the whole O-line shifting one way on a running play…Then snapping off the other way, like a Peyton Manning does ???

Coaching…Its all coaching…Manipulating the defense with your eyes and mannerisms…Are as important as the O-line blocking in front of you !!!

And are QB coaching is TERRIBLE teaching Ponder those things…

Simpson is a receiver who does his damage on deep routes.

    What help does he need?

Someone to tell him not to underthrow his targets?
Someone to tell him a sideline pass shouldn’t land 4 yards out of bounds? Someone to tell him to look at more than just the intended receiver?
Someone to tell him to stop throwing off his back foot?
Someone to tell him to stop throwing across his body?
Someone to tell him that he can scramble to the LEFT side of the field too?

I’m willing to bet someone has told him those things. He’s had the better part of 2 seasons now, and he’s making the same mistakes. That’s not coaching.

Well it has been a number of minutes since the last post by OTK so I will assume that the last staement about Ponder not even being close to a bust has stunned more than just me. I could quote stat after stat but I won’t, the simple truth is Ponder was hired to do a job, he has failed in doing so. That alone makes him a bust. No amount of time is going to make him improve to the level required so that is a bust. Not being able to throw a ball consistantly, that is a bust. Not being able to sell a play action pass when you have the best RB in game, that is a bust. I am sorry if I offend you OTK but you sound alot like Frazer when he makes excuses for Ponder.

Harvin will be in the final year of his rookie contract…Vikings don’t have to franchise him…

But Harvin doesn’t have to report to training camp or beyond, either…

The latter…Is what would most likely happen…

This is Ponder’s very FIRST full season! You guys need to take a look at the Vet QBs in the league and see how they were in their early years before being to overly judgmental! Next season will judge the fate of Ponder as the Vikings starting QB. You can bank on that!

I’m not sure why nobody is noticing…

    With Harvin gone…

The other receivers are getting more reps in practice…And they are getting a little better also…Jenkins is doing okay the past 2 weeks…Not great…But okay…

And Simpson is getting faster the past few games…And catching the ball “with his hans” and not off his chest…

Can they do enough outside, to help take pressure off of Rudolf and the running game ???…

The offense is making small strides ahead, with the loss of Harvin…

But will it be enough, this late in the season ???…Guess we will find out the next 2 games…

  91. By Gilberator on Dec 19, 2012 | Reply

I say we try and grab Bowe. Harvin is great but lets get rid of him while hes valuable. Let Wright develop and then Bowe and simpson can work the outside. Simpson did well in cincy with Green. All he needs is a good #1 WR. Snagging smith will do nothing. Id rather spend a pick on a qb than go through FA.

I say develop around ponder. Make this TEAM great. If Ponders the issue then we will know and then we can start looking at other options. I think Ponders skill set (when fully developed) will be just fine. Hes shown flashes of promise this season amongst rookie-like mistakes but its not like he has good people to throw to. Lets be real here people.

Harvin has the choice next season to finish his rookie contract…Or sit out and get fined…Or not play at all, and not get payed…(Possibly) demanding a trade…

If he were to chose to come in at some time to fulfil his rookie contract…The Vikings could then give Harvin the “franchise tag” the following year…Before letting him go as a free agent…

If they let him go as a free agent…They would most likely receive the highest compensatory pick allowed in the draft…For losing Harvin to free agency…That would end up being (most likely) a late 3rd round pick…

Smith would be an upgrade but he too is a game manager. I for one would like to win BECAUSE of our QB not INSPITE of him. My 2 cents says we need to get creative on offense (but remember we have Musgrave who is about as creative as a 1 cell organism). I’d pull out all the stops and tricks I could think of. Throw of their D early and put up some scores. Then feed the beast.

I like this back and fourth about the bubble screens and short p@sses and hoping the WR picks up a lot of YAC. This is not Ponder’s decision. This is the type of game that Coach Fraizer likes. Run First and then short high percentage p@sses and work methodically down the field. This is what Frazier calls “Vikings Football”. The days of Culpepper to Moss are over.

If we win out and Ponder is performing as he did last Sunday, I think he’s a lock to start next season. You all can hmmm and haw about that, but the organization from the Wilfs to Frazier are sold on Ponder. He’s going to get every opportunity to be the QB of the future. Webb may stay one more year, but after that he will be gone or Frazier will be. IMO.

I’m sure no one in this organization believes Ponder will lead us to a superbowl with this performance.
Look at how much times Ponder was throwing earlier in the season and compare it to now you’ll see that these guys don’t believe we can win relying on Ponders arm, therefore this offseason he well have some true competition

@realviking I have not heard one negative thing about Ponder from the organization since they drafted. They haven’t even considered pulling him. From all the things I have read from the organization side Ponder will be given every opportunity to be the QB of the future. Unless you have some article that states otherwise. I am not saying that they may not bring someone in to compete, but I think Ponder will be the guy to beat out. I think it’s only fan’s wishes that it was otherwise. That’s how I see it.

Realviking Although I agree Ponders passing hasnt been a game winning production, the coaches arent giving him the ball because AD is playing so well. Teams just cant stop him. That and our WRs are proving to be better blockers than catchers. Add that to the run-block ability of our O-line which has obviously increased with the addition of Kalil who seems to follow AD up the field quite a bit. Being in the head coach’s shoes, you can’t miss the fact that this team is better when we run the ball a lot. Give Ponder somebody he can throw to with confidence and I think we will see a different #7. once again my opinion

It’s not what you hear it’s what you see. Frazier is only playing Ponder because he believes Ponder gives us the best chance to win.
Frazier did say if Ponder is stopping us from winning then he will have to bench him.
Since then we haven’t lost because Frazier speed relying on Ponders arm and relies on AP.
What if we fall behind and can’t run the ball as much and Frazier gas to rely on Ponders inconsistent are and he can’t deliver.
As much as Frazier would want to stay with Ponder out might cost him his job look at Rex Ryan.

I was very upset with the GB game and Ponder rightly took a lot of heat for his horrible performance but I have to say that the last few weeks he has done his job and helped extend drives and made key 3rd down connections to move the chains and take pressure off of Adrian. Just as Ponder had deserved criticism he also deserves a pat on the back as well as Musgrave for dialing up plays that fit to his strengths and rolling out of the pocket and making throws on the run ….Whatever our personal opinions are about Ponder it really doesn’t matter at this point in the season because he is our guy as of right now going forward and we will either win or lose with this current roster….our passing offense is a work in progress and I believe we will address it in the offseason but for now it is what it is and instead of whining week after week which I’ve done myself its time for this fan to root for his team….we have almost tripled our wins from last year and AP is on pace to run for the most yards ever in a season and we have a chance to make the playoffs…..The year the Pack won the superbowl they didn’t have a running game and we don’t have much of a passing game……but i bet u didn’t see all the packers fans whining about the running game as they held up the Lombardi trophy….so lets trust our coaching staff to dial up a game plan to our strengths and trust our players to execute as they have been doing in this final quarter in all 3 phases as of late….and in the off season at the appropriate time we will address the holes…..but 4 now we are in a playoff race so lets support our Minnesota Vikings……Skol Vikes!!!!!!!!!!!

We also have an up and coming defense and a QB that just needs a little confidence imho. I see your point but Bowe is on the friggin chiefs. It doesnt get much worse than that if you ask me. I think we have a great organization. Im just another fan though. Just putting in my two cents!

Hey, I’m just happy this game means something. Its nice to be 8-? after a 3 win season. There’s a small part of me that would rather lose out for draft position. But…. Man would I love to see a playoff birth.

Yeah if we make it in the playoffs ill be so proud. Im already proud to be a vikings fan this year. We had so many doubters. They paid the price! I just want to keep this train a’ movin.

I think we should be careful with how much we use AP because I don’t want to see him get injured.
Get Toby some touches to increase his value so we can trade him somewhere else where he can start

Gilberator — since Ziggy took over, and its been a slow process, but for the first time in my life I actually like our front office.

winning must be the focal point not records though in this case the record and winning are hand in hand because we dont win if A.P. doesnt go ape s hit. As a fan i wanna see adrian get it but he has the right mentality of putting the team before any records or personal achievements. this is a team and there are aging players that have put a whole lot of blood sweat and tears and they aren’t just thinking rushing records

Don’t get me wrong Gilberator. I think the Vikings have a great organization. I think like it was said before that we USED to have one of the best places for free agents to come as we offered something that no other teams would to certain players.

But now we need a big WR to compliment Harvin. If I were a WR I would want to play for a team that could actually throw the ball, or even wants to a little bit. The Vikings would never throw the ball again if they didn’t have to. Why would a WR want to come into that system?? Sure we have a good team, good D gettin better everyday. Good Oline for the run, not so much pass. But then we have a QB that can’t hit you in stride anyway. If I were a big name WR I would want to play for a team that bases their game plan around the pass… not around the run.

Would it be great to play with AP on the same team?? Well yeah!!! But not if you never get the ball

Realviking said “in the NFL, you either have it or you don’t”

Please take a look at Drew Brees stats for his first 3 seasons. What you will see is that in hisz first 3 years, it appeared that he was a bust. However, over time, he figured it out and became one of the best QB’s to have played the game

I really value your football insights, however, I have to somewhat disagree about your “it’s all coaching” statement. The old statement about taking a horse to water but you can’t make him drink it is true. In my opinion, coaching is about 75-80% of it but the other part of it is being coachable and can that person comprehend and put into practice what is being taught. You can have the best coach in the world but a poor learner can only comprehend so much of it and be able to actually put it into practice!

pretty confident in these last two games. havin cook come back is good for the defense and i think christian will be able to make some throws to get us a win.

The only way Ponder will be able to have enough time to throw is if we double team JJ Watt. THAT in itself will be the answer. Otherwise, he will be on his arse most of the day. Containing Schaub/Foster is the (2) major aspects in this game as far as Defense. Schaub likes to rifle the ball alot, sooo we need to keep him out of his rythm from the get go. I’d like to see some fortuitous blitz packages against this team. Schaub doesn’t seem to like to get much out of the pocket, BUT he has a quick release as well. Seems to like to throw to the left side alot. Well, either way it goes; I wish the Vikes success on Sunday. We have (2) goals to achieve: BEAT the Texans and give AP the support/help that he needs to get closer to his goal. GO VIKINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Muskyfever- I see your point. Why come to a run-first offense as a receiver. But having a good RB will open up the passing game. The Texans are a great example. They have Arian, Andre, and Matt. But as Jason Child said, Brees seemed to be a bust…….now look at him. The guy can’t stop throwing TDs. If a deep threat wideout wants to have a good season, I think MN should be a worthy candidate. We are an up and coming team that needs some spark in the passing game. Im sure Ponder can get better with a star receiver on the field. Imo, trade harvin for picks and pay a good deep threat. Harvin is wonderful but hes not the receiver we need. Once again, just my opinion. :)

Gilberator, I have also wondered what a Harvin trade could do for the Vikes insofar as more pick is concerned but Percy is a very special type of player and I think that what he brings to the table has much more value then a couple of extra draft picks. If we could pick up a real #1 WR I think that would take some of the ware and tare off of Harvin and make the Offense much more potent.

All this talk about ponder is giving me a headache…. the guy is honestly taking a long time to develope.good wr or not he has no wow factor to him that shows he will be anymore than a brad johnson qb that wont find success til late in his career dont be another jets vikes and put your chIps on a average qb thats not nfl ready around a team that could win any game with even a slightly above average qb

  181. By Bigfan1 on Dec 21, 2012 | Reply

It’s easy to see who is hungrier for this win, the Texans are in, the Vikings are in the playoffs now mindset, all out. The intensity edge to the Vikes.
