Vikings Go Old-School In 36-22 Win Over Rams

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 16, 2012 – 6:10 pm

Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier has an affinity for old-school football after playing on one of the best defenses of all-time (the 1985 Chicago Bears) and with one of the greatest RBs of all-time (Walter Payton). As you can imagine, then, Frazier was quite pleased with his team following their big victory Sunday.

It’s a non-traditional final score, but the Vikings 36-22 win over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome was about as old-school as it gets. Another historic day by Adrian Peterson and a cleverly-crafted defensive game plan paced the Vikings winning effort, as they moved to 8-6 on the season and remained alive in the NFC playoff chase.

Peterson, who has been forward about his desire to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, looked like a man on a mission against the Rams. Constantly pushing through and dashing around Rams defenders, Peterson muscled and sprinted his way to 212 rushing yards and 1 TD on 24 carries. He had 2 runs of 50+ yards, including an 82-yard TD in the 1st half, and then his 54-yard outburst late in the game all but sealed the Vikings win.

As good as Peterson was on the day, he didn’t deliver the Vikings a victory on his own. The Vikings defense, which has come on of late, played perhaps its best game against the Rams. Defensive coordinator Alan Williams and his staff put together a game plan that held St. Louis to just 7 points in the 1st quarter and just 5.6 yards per play for the game.

Rather than relying on a 4-man rush from the defensive line and dropping 7 in coverage, the Vikings mixed up their calls and kept the Rams guessing. A quick glance at the stat sheet will illustrate the way the Vikings varied their defensive attack: defensive linemen Letroy Guion and Kevin Williams each had a pass defensed; linebackers Chad Greenway and Erin Henderson each had a sack; and Everson Griffen dropped into coverage and came away with a 29-yard INT return.

When all was said and done, the Vikings had 5 pass breakups, 4 sacks and a fumble recovery. Greenway led the team in tackles (again) and role players such as Christian Ballard (1.0 sack), Griffen and Marcus Sherels all had an impact on defense.

The Vikings running game and defense were key in the victory, but credit also goes to QB Christian Ponder for a well-managed game. Ponder was efficient and careful, connecting on 17 of 24 passes for 131 yards with no TDs or INTs; he also had a 5-yard rushing TD in the 1st quarter. Blair Walsh also played a key role, hitting a NFL record 3 FGs of 50+ yards and going 5 of 5 on the day.

It was a huge win for the Vikings because it keeps them alive in the NFC playoff chase and improves their record in the NFC should that come into tie-breaking procedures. Now the team will sit back, watch the rest of the NFC games unfold late Sunday, and prepare for a game against one of the AFC’s best next week – the Houston Texans.

Old School Win Indeed! Back to basics with Vikings Pass Rush!

We need similar effort in the remaining two games, and we can beat ANY NFL TEAM! SKOL VIKINGS!!

Solid defensive effort until the 4th quarter. We have to start playing to win, and stop playing not to lose.

We gave up two TDs early in that 4th that we didn’t have to.

    Overall= great game !!

Another freak performance by AD. Deserves mvp & comeback player. Good to see ponder at least manage game some with no turnovers. Still need to get more than 130 yds out of passing game. Playoff possibility very much alive. Go Vikes!

My son and I was at the game…..great performance from AP and good job Defense for first 3 quarters. Hope Robison is not out for too long and Cook returns next week. Ponder had a decent managed game….no turnovers but several under/over throws and almost a flub not knowing whether or not to call a timeout that nearly cost a FG. It seemed that we should have called on Webb in the 4th but let the Rams hang in the game. Overall a fun day was had by my son and I……and now can say we have seen a 200+ yard game by AP.

Peterson is the MVP. I am bothered by the fact that this is even a discussion, at this point. He has clearly earned it, and should be given what rightfully belongs to him. This man has SELFLESSLY destroyed those who sought to deny him, demoralized those who underestimated him, and conquered those who planned to hurt him. All with a smile :) Followed by a humble attitude and a heart of gold. Can we please make sure we do the right thing, and put the MVP trophy in Adrian Peterson’s hands?

The only way we get in ahead of SF is if they lose all 3 remaining games – unlikely since they play Arizona last weekend. To beat Seattle out we need to win out and for Seattle to lose out, also unlikely, since Seattle plays St. Louis at home on last weekend. I think, realistically, we have to win out and/or beat the second place team in NFC east. Hope for Washington to beat everybody else.

I’d like to see Adrian go home with all the accolades befitting his achievements this year.

The best rusher for NFC Conference 2012 (all but done), the 2012 NFL rushing title (of course he will), a Pro Bowl selection (of course he will), best comeback player of the year (he better), total rushing yards personal season best (already has it), Vikings franchise rushing record in one season (already has it), join the 2000 club (I have no doubt he will), break the all time single season rushing record (we all hope), 2012 MVP (he better), highest yards per game rushing average in the NFL 2012 (all but done), most consecutive 100+ yard rushing games personal season best (already has it), most rushing back yards after point of contact 2012 (all but done), best rushing back against top 10 NFL defenses in 2012 (all but done), lowest fumbles per rushing yard ratio (single season best?), and the list keeps going.

I’ll let the analysts do their job, but as a fan, this guy is pure grace.

Where would Cutler be without Marshall? Watch some other games and see some of the catches receivers are making for their Qb’s. Our guys rarely make an amazing catch to help Ponder out. Lord Farve made an overrated career out of throwing up ducks and putting his receivers in dangerous spots only to have them bail him out time and time again. If we can draft or trade for some talent to help the pas sing game next year, Ponder and the Vikings will be SB contenders in 2 years. Then you can all jump back on the bandwagon and tell everyone how you supported this team all along.

Even by allusion, you can’t compare Brady to Ponder… if Brady has a bad game (he has had about 10 in his career) it can easily be forgiven – they win 10-12 anyway in the season.

Ponder just makes winning that much harder for Vikes. THAT is not the hoped for result of a QB leading a team.

With that said, today was Ponder’s best game in some time. Simply because he didn;t do anything real bad and he didn’t throw anything away – although one pick was dropped. Still, no damage done means we win. It gives us a chance. We will have a better QB one day, but for now, hope Ponder plays this adequately, we might have play-off football to enjoy!

viking181, it is not what he did, because you are right, he didn’t do much extraordinary, but he DID convert that first drive TD and that DID give us life on the road. After that, he basically just got a couple first downs and handed the ball off, but he did NOT turn the ball over.

But that essential fear he has of making turnovers he throws some real garbage even at open receivers. Wish he would learn to throw an accurate football and something with zip cuz he exposes his guys (Carlson on two throws) by his lobs to receivers.

He wasn’t spectacular, simply because he doesn’t have that in his game. BUT he did play adequately enough while Peterson ate the Rams up. Still comes out a W.

Being better than the competition is what competition is about. WHY are you ok with coming close? MY question is just as valid as yours? We could/should be much better than we are.

Just being happy because we are “better than last year” is not my aim in any one season. Being as good as you can be is what I see as ambition. We are not there, plain and simple.

Vlad, there are a lot of Homers on this board, that is why.

Homer: A blind chauvinist that displays uncritical loyalty and enthusiasm towards a team, organization, leader, band, institution, etc in spite of their obvious faults and shortcomings. Usually belligerent to criticism no matter how constructive or benign it is to their entity they blindly and uncritically support.

You talking to me Parkway? Because I am still as cynical as ever – but honest. NOT turning the ball over is hardly a compliment, but he did do that – NO turnovers. Hardly praise my friend, and it ain’t coming until I see something worth praising in his game. But he did not lose us a game like he did in GB, Washington or Seattle…

    But honest is honest.

Imagine what they would think of the GM meetings about talent and drafts…. They would be “Bad GM” just for being critical of the guys they like.

Brady made a beat down very interesting…. he was a late round pick… we pick a 3rd rounder first…. We need the Pats GM!

We are young and some good talent we can see developing (Harrison, cook, Kalil) so I think we will see a pretty big shift in next year or two just to refresh the talent.

There are no other options … we can not go back to March … Ponder is it.

Frazier defended the DBs and OL during nearly every press conference last season … yet as soon as Frazier had a chance what happened?

    Shawn…

Harvin will hold out without a contract…

Bowe will be traded…But no way does KC get a first round draft choice for him…Bowe doesn’t have a contract…So to get Bowe…Bowe needs to be paid…

Bowe isn’t near the receiver threat Harvin is…Harvin can return kicks and play RB….Along with playing WR…And Harvin can play WR at any position….

Harvin could get traded for a high draft pick…

Bowe might be worth a 3rd of 4th round pick…If a team gives KC a second round pick…They gave them to much…Bowe will be asking for big money…As will Harvin…

I think Harvin gets traded…Wright is doing a solid job this season…And has not been trouble for the team…

Allen (may also have an outside chance) of being traded…With E Griffen and Ballard doing well this season…

Fitzgerald might be the only veteran WR that makes sense to try for in a trade…But that I can’t see happening…Unless Harvin wants out…Or wants to much money…Or has caused the Vikings to many problems off the field or to high of an injury risk…

  184. By Shawn on Dec 16, 2012 | Reply

    OTK

Percy has no legs to stand on … he has not had 1,000 yards receiving in his career. Kick returners do not break the bank …. he misses games and practice. I would not pay him franchise money.

Bowe will likely get franchise tagged …. which costs a first round pick for another team to sign him. thats why i said give up our 1st round pick.

I would take Bowe over Percy if push came to shove. Bowe has a history of 1000 yard seasons with bad QBs

Fitz will not be traded … and Bowe is worth a 1st rounder not a 3rd rounder he makes pro bowls with Matt Cassel … Bowe is good.

Remember how well Ponder played the first game Percy was out? I believe Ponder felt more relaxed– not having the pressure of a strong personality ready to get angry if he does not get the ball.

    I posted a link …. it shows 225 catcha’ble and 26 dr’ops

I wouldnt take a chance on a lottery ticket when my other choice is 200k.

Right now we will be picking 20ish … perfect for Bowe who is a proven #1 WR

however it sounds like Bowe may be an unrestricted FA so it wouldnt cost a draft pick

  225. By OTKalil2012 on Dec 17, 2012 | Reply

I just saw the 26 drops…And looked up this years pass attempts on another site…

If you like Bowe , fine Shawn…

    I don’t…Personal opinion…

I just posted to begin with…

Bowe will NOT go for a number one draft pick…Not even close…And that a 3rd or 4th would be more than enough compensation to talk early with Bowes agent before he was released…

  226. By Shawn on Dec 17, 2012 | Reply

Besides the WR cla’ss isnt that great this year

    and

it is rare to get a stud WR in the draft … it takes 2-3 seasons before WRs start to reach their potential

I want a #1 WR right now not in 3 years

DWayne Bowe … DWayne Bowe … DWayne Bowe … DWayne Bowe …

    Shawn,
I agree with you that Bowe is a very gifted receiver, but his not #1 quality. He is better then a position type WR, but less then a#1. He is at tweener at BEST. He will want to much money, but if he dosen’t want to much money, my guess is we will try and get him.

    LOL v-o-d … wrong

OTK … I like Fitz but its not realistic. Bowe will either be a FA or Franchised, making him an option. Fitzgerald is not asking out and just got paid and Arizona has no reason to part with him.

I like Mike Wallace as well but someone pointed out Wallace is a speedster which requires a strong arm and accuracy. Whereas Bowe is a big body you can lob it up to … so I have focused on Bowe

with ponder at Qb, we cant utilize Wallace’s speed. We need a big target reciver..or get our selves a Qb with decent arm strength

I am open to drafting a QB, but we should use our first round pick elsewhere. Receiver, D Tackle, Linebacker, or Guard before we get a QB. I dont like Ponder either but we need to improve at other positions that way when we do replace Pond, that QB will be coming into a much better situation than what Pond came into.

Funny….The Strib has there Monday morning video…Claiming Frazier is the one who deserves a new contract extension ???…

For what ???…For getting an extremely talented young group of players to an 8 win season so far…C’mon man !!!

Frazier has one more year left on his contract…Lets just hope Zygi waits that year before making any decisions on head coach going forward…

Running the football behind a solid O-line is not “rocket science”..Especially behind the best RB in football…

Jury is out on Frazier…Especially with so many other big named head coaches being released after this season…

I don’t think to many teams will be busting the doors down at winter park…To obtain Fraziers services for their teams head coaching duties…

Very happy with the win yesterday – on the road and against a team that maybe wasn’t exactly a NFL powerhouse, but definitely motivated by playoffs thoughts of their own. You can’t help but marvel at AP – think about how teams come in confident that they’ll be the ones to shut him down and then he hangs 212 on them – we are blessed to have a competitor with heart like AP on our team.

Walsh was the game MVP with 15 pts of his own, but quite frankly I would have preferred 5 PATs vs FGs. Need to get more balanced on offense to keep the chains moving and get some TDs instead of FGs.

Kudos to Ponder for his scrambling touchdown – pocket breaking down around him, he used his legs to make a great play. However, we need more than 130 yds passing from him if just to keep the chains moving. No red zone INTs this week, but Musgrave could let Ponder off the chain and let him air a few out once in a while just to keep opposing safeties honest.

Defensively, nice 1st half. Everson Griffen is da man. Second half? Not so hot. C’mon guys..when you have a team like the Rams down, good teams don’t give up 400 yds passing and 3 TDs..there is just no excuse for it..I’ll be convinced that we might have something when I see a 4th Qtr pass rush..

That said, we’re at 8-6, we beat the Niners, swept Detroit and split with the Bears so far. I’m still not a big fan of this coaching staff, but to their credit, this team has shown progress over last year’s 3 win debacle. Just thank God we have AP on our side – the NFL comeback player of the year and MVP – we’d be nowhere without him.

I surely do think Frazier has earned the right to be the Vikings head coach for next season…

But think its way to early to judge Frazier being the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings with a 4 year contract extension…

Spielman and Zygi have both hitched their wagon to Ponder being a 3 year project…And having Frazier being a 2 year project…Which I believe to be very solid thinking…

Lets hope they keep to that schedule…Before handing out ANY contract extensions to either Ponder of Frazier going forward !!!…

I would think Zygi would have learned that lesson with Childress ???…

Zygi payed a lot of money out to Childress, who hasn’t had anything to do with the Vikings organization for the last 2 seasons…

  241. By realviking on Dec 17, 2012 | Reply

IMO Everson Griffen can be our best defensive player if given the chance. He steps up whenever he’s on the field and I’ve never seen a big fella run so fast.

When we play the Texans I would rather see us win or lose to there starters then to win against backups. We need to prove that we can beat the playoff contenders if we want to make it to the playoffs.
I want to make it to the playoffs but if we don’t make it and we win these last two games it would give hope of what to expect next season. If we beat the Packers we would be letting them know that the Vikings are back.

I was at the game yesterday and can tell you this….our receiving corps was open most of the day and Ponder either did not find them or was told not to throw. I’m telling you an average QB would have lit it up yesterday. Even tho we had guys open all day we DID NOT have anyone running deep…..at all. Large chunks of realestate was open and NO ONE around. When Ponder makes a few throws some of you act like he is a God send….come on people. He handed off to AP and made a couple good throws along with a lucky run for a TD (face it 9 times out of 10 he gets sacked on that play). He did not turn the ball over, handed off, a made some easy throws and a couple good ones. We need more than that to win AT A HIGH LEVEL. What happens if AP gets shut down (I know that has not been happening)? What happens when we have to come from behind and throw? We need more production from QB and I feel that Webb could have done everything Ponder did yesterday AND added yet another big run threat AND has the arm to throw down the field. The Rams didn’t even bother with defending down field because A they knew Ponder was not going to throw long and/or B none of our plays sent WR down field. Yesterday our game plan worked and the D came up big but what happens when we get behind???

  243. By OTKalil2012 on Dec 17, 2012 | Reply

    autobon7 …

    I disagree…

I don’t think Webb could do what Ponder did yesterday….

One botched snap from center, one fumbled hand off to AP or tangling up his feet, one mishandled shotgun snap yesterday…Could have been enough to lose that game…

And having Webb in there…Would have increased problems like that occurring…

Why is Sherels now returning kicks again ???….Because AJ Jefferson lost a fumble the week before…On one of “very few” opportunities of returning kicks…Where Sherels has been almost “flawless” catching and holding onto the football…As has Ponder…Except for some ints…

No…I don’t think Webb could do what Ponder is doing….

When Ponder finally does get hurt…Fans will find out…Webb is “clumsy”…He showed that in preseason…And does not have good QB mechanics…

Ponder needs some work on his QB mechanics…

Webb needs a holiday miracle, for his…

OTKalil2012…..you need to stay away from the coolaid. What you are saying is that Ponder is a VERY BASIC game manager (not fumbling, not tangling up his feet, etc). All these things should be a given…..Ponder needs some work on his mechanics…..how many games does he have under his belt? He should be WAY past that by now. We need to quit babying this guy because he is not starting QB material. How do you have Webb figured out with only a few starts under his belt? How is that an apples to apples compare? Bottom line is management does not want to admit that they blew their first round pick on someone who is not working out. Shame

OTKalil2012….have you been to any Viks games in the last 2 years? There is so much more you can see that you never see on tv. More than just the under/over throws. My son and I set 9 rows behind the Viks bench yesterday so we got to see what is going on with the offense and coaches while the defense was on the field. Ponder spent most of that time standing/sitting by himself…..didn’t have much interaction with team mates. It didn’t take long to figure out that this team has no confidence in him. While everyone celebrates the sacks and int by E Griffen Ponder stood alone….didn’t bother approaching anyone, no high fives, no hugs, no pat on the backs. AND no one came to him. THIS WAS ALL GAME. It was totally obvious to even my 10 year old and all the Viks fans sitting in section 138 (and there was a LOT of them….great to see on the road). Everyone was talking about it. This is a lose of confidence in our QB and lack of leadership skills by Ponder. Some people have trouble with the truth and sometimes the truth hurts but the proof was in the pudding. Ponder does not have what it takes to excel at the pro level.

Love it OTKalill. I said Saturday night Ponder would quiet the naysayers and while he did not look like Tom Brady, he did a good job. Too early to discount Ponder as a has been– if by the end of next season he has not progressed, then I would be concerned. And so true– Webb would just send the whole team into panic mode, scampering around like a squirrel on a Los Angeles freeway.

I’m not saying that Webb is the be all end all….I’m just saying he offers more than Ponder. As far as Webb not playing OTKalil2012, staff is not ready to give up the fact that their 1st round pick (who was a big stretch and gamble) is not the guy. Pride can be a terrible thing sometimes.

When the Viks dump Ponder just like the 49ers are dumping Smith (another game manager) I will be the first to post up here and say I told ya so.

If AP were not running all over the NFL and we had a losing record this may already be happening. Or, if our staff would swallow their pride and concede the obvious and be bold enough (like the 49ers) to make a change despite a winning record and a shot at the post season.

I know its a tough situation, we are 8-6, post season shot, hesitant to make a change…..but the writting is on the wall. Ponder does not cut it. We are 32nd out of 32 in the passing game. We win inspite of Ponder, not because of Ponder. Can anyone name just one game that we won because of stellar QB play? That’s right… not one. Everyone blames the receivers but I seen guys open all day yesterday but Ponder locks into 1 guy and thats it. There was most definitely seperation against the Rams. I know this has been an issue in the past but not yesterday.

Ponder did what we wanted him to do yesterday. He threw for over 100 yards. he also personally put points on the board. He didn’t throw any picks and he fed Peterson enough times to grind the Rams down. 4th quarter was Musgraves fault and as sson as he changed the scheme, the team knew it and went into “Don’t lose” mode. This is where people get ticked off, but the fact that this was the game plan to silidify a win still worked. So- I am not going to complain. Houston is up next and they are going to feel the wrath of Peterson and our Defense is going to come up big for us in this game. For some reason I have a feeling that Allen is going to have his best game yet. He has been kinda quiet but that is because a storm is brewing…Sounds like we will have Cook back. Spencer- I will be cheering him on. Tell your boy he better deliver!

I said over and over but I’ll say it again, look at KIRK COUSIN!!! he perform well and won the game for the redskins! If we all remember correctly, cousin was taken in the later rounds.
