This Day In Vikings History: Miracle At The Met

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 14, 2012 – 11:51 am

It was 32 years ago today – December 14, 1980 – when the Vikings pulled off what is perhaps one of the great finishes in NFL history and is most certainly one of the best finishes in franchise history. You know an event has a significant place in history when it’s given a nickname that forever lives in lore, and that’s what happened with the Vikings victory.

Miracle at the Met is the nickname, and it describes an improbable comeback by the Vikings over the Cleveland Browns to capture a division championship.

Trailing 23-22 with 14 seconds to play in the game, legendary Vikings Head Coach Bud Grant called for a hook-and-ladder play, which was executed to perfection and resulted in RB Ted Brown advancing the ball to the Cleveland 46. On the next snap, with 5 seconds remaining, QB Tommy Kramer dropped back and launched pass down the right sideline. The pass was tipped and then caught by Ahmad Rashad in the end zone, giving the Vikings the win and the NFC Central Division title.

Current Vikings Director of College Scouting Scott Studwell made a key play for the Vikings defense on the series prior to the game-winning drive, tackling a Browns offensive player just short of the 1st down marker on 3rd and 9, resulting in the Cleveland punt that gave the Vikings possession at the 20 with just 14 seconds to play.

The embedded video clip above will help you relive the moment – a moment that will live forever in Vikings and NFL history, and will always be known as the Miracle at the Met.

Being from Canada, I don’t expect some of you to really give a d@mn about what I say here. I NEVER get involved in another country’s politics, especially yours, where I happen to have many old friends.
But there are now 40 parents in Connecticut that will always remember Christmas for the worst reason possible, for the rest of their lives.
I completely agree with your Second Amendment, but I have to think that your Founding Fathers did not envision some lunatic killing children when it was adopted. Maybe some “fine tuning” is needed.
“Weapons of Mass Destruction”……Not in Iraq, but in Newtown, Connecticut.

That’s all I have to say. I may have “stirred the pot” here, but in a country that bills itself “the greatest country on earth” (and I agree), these things should STOP.

Most of the people I work with own weapons for hunting and protection. Instead of blowing smoke about some paranoid government gun take over. Why don’t gun owners come up with a solution that would allow them to keep the guns they love but keep them away from the mentally unstable. I will say a prayer for those who lost their loved ones today. Oh ya, Vikings if you can’t win the last three, just win the last one. Do it Now…

    Shawn:
Canada has much tougher gun laws than the USA. We need a Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC) to buy a gun. There are two types of certificates – one to acquire a “restricted” gun (pistols, automatics, etc.) and “unrestricted” (rifles and shotguns). Up to fairly recently, we also had to register our guns, but this was eliminated. However, we still have to have a firearms licence to legally bear arms.
I Believe you are right that there are as many guns per capita in Canada, but there are far less handguns and automatics here.
I don’t know how our murder rate compares to the USA but I am sure it varies hugely with locale – very high in some cities, far lower in others, very low in rural areas.

Shawn – you are welcome. These tragedies have, I believe, complex causes. People, naturally enough, look for simple answers to try to comprehend them but I don’t think that there are simple answers to explain them. Prevention of these tragedies is almost surely a complex issue, as well. Canada has had its own tragedies of this sort, so has England, which I believe has much tougher gun laws than Canada. The right to bear arms here in Canada, speaking personally, is not onerous and I do not feel that my rights have been severely hurt. Others feel differently. We have universal health care here, but that does not prevent tragedies from happening. Nobody knows how many tragedies have been prevented by our guns laws and by our universal health care, but we have made our choices in these areas and they seem to work for us.

I spent a lot of time in Canada when I was younger– primarily in the eastern part- was born about 90 miles from Toronto. Overall, the cities are much safer, but I believe I have read that assaults are very high in some areas– now, there are not many murders and gun violence is rare (although recently there is worry that is changing), but there is still violence. People will snap– but like a friend of mine always likes to say– there had to have been warnings.

It is manufactured with the extensive use of aluminum alloys and synthetic materials.

I think that a DT in the first by the Vikings is very possible. Frazier wants to run the ball and stop the run…what better of a way to do that than to get a young stud DT?

ILB would be another obvious choice as well.

Was at that game 5 rows up in the same corner of end zone. Got pretty crazy down there. I have always missed the Met. Seen many great Vikes and Twins games there. Grant, Fran, Killebrew, Carew, Oliva. Memories frozen in time. High school classmates sister married Kramer. Oh ya I forgot Clint Jones was fun to watch.

Concentrate on A.P. getting the rushing record and not Ponder loosing the game for us and the coachs doing nothing about it.

Not a frequent blogger here anymore and now I know why. If I’m going to express my opinions about world affairs I certainly wouldn’t pick an NFL site as my soap box. Shut off your computers, get involved and get a life people. You should be ashamed. The only statement that should be blogged is heartfelt sorrow.

Adrian Peterson is going to put up over 100 yards at STL. Their D-Backs are tough, so I can’t say how much.

Jackson is also going to put up close to, if not more than, 100 yards against us.

Bradford is overall better than Ponder, but neither impress me…so the questions remain.

Who rushes for more; Peterson or Jackson?

Who’s defense is more solid overall?

Who’s special teams do a better job?

If the answer is Peterson, Vikings, Vikings, we got this.

St Louis seems to be tough for us– we don’t do well there historically if my memory serves correctly– but I think we win.

Fred gets his paints out and goes to the basement
    projecting some slides
onto a plain white canvas and traces them, fills in the spaces
he turns off the light, but it doesn’t look right
and all of these bas tards, have taken his place
he’s forgotten but not yet gone

Fred sits alone at his desk in the dark
There’s an awkward young shadow that waits in the hall
He’s cleared all his things and he’s put them in boxes
Things that remind him: ‘life has been good’

    Twenty-five years
    He’s worked at the paper
A man’s here to take him downstairs
    And I’m sorry, mr. jones
    It’s time

Wikipedia does say it can also be called a hook & ladder, but I think it”s just because people misunderstood what was actually said contrary to the many “theories” Wikipedia serves up. I’m over 55 & when I was a kid everybody had Tonka hook & ladder fire trucks. I guess it’s just one of those things that drives me nuts whenever I hear it.
