Vikings CBs A Hot Topic This Week
Posted by on December 13, 2012 – 7:36 amNot making an appearance in Wednesday’s “8 Vikings-Rams Storylines To Follow” blog entry was the topic of Vikings CBs, but they were a hot topic during Leslie Frazier’s meeting with local reporters. The first five questions of Frazier’s Wednesday press conference focused on various issues surround Vikings CBs, so let’s go over a few things we learned…
A.J. Jefferson could play on Sunday
Since Chris Cook went down with a broken arm during the Vikings Week 8 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, A.J. Jefferson has stepped into an increased role on defense. Near the end of last week’s win over Chicago, though, Jefferson also was injured. He suffered a concussion and was forced out of the game and into the NFL’s return-from-concussion protocol.
On Wednesday, Frazier said Jefferson was “getting closer” to passing all of his tests. The Vikings expect to have a much better idea of Jefferson’s chances to play this Sunday in St. Louis after Thursday’s work.
Next man up
In the event that Jefferson is not able to return in time for Sunday’s game, a few players would be asked to step up. Rookie Josh Robinson would be first on the list, although he’s seen plenty of the field this season while playing in the Vikings nickel package. On Monday, Frazier also mentioned Brandon Burton and Marcus Sherels as guys who may see increased roles on defense should Jefferson sit out.
Sherels to resume kickoff return duties
With Percy Harvin unavailable because of his ankle injury, the Vikings kickoff return role is open for business. Sherels was the first to fill the void and he’s done so adequately. More recently, though, Jefferson took a turn returning kicks. With his availability now in question because of the concussion, Frazier indicated earlier in the week that Sherels will reassume the kickoff return roles. Even if Jefferson does play on Sunday, expect Sherels to take the reps so the Vikings can reduce Jefferson’s exposure to another concussion.
Chris Cook on track
Chris Cook has returned to practice for the Vikings and appears to be on track to return to game action as soon as next week against the Houston Texans. Frazier has been asked about the chances of Cook returning this season and hasn’t been specific about if or when it could happen, but the fact that Cook has returned to practice is a sign of good progress.
The Vikings have done a nice job of covering up his absence with Jefferson and Robinson, but having Cook return to action would be a big plus for the Vikings in terms of their ability to cover bigger receivers and in terms of their depth both on defense and on special teams.
Winfield held out of Wednesday practice
Veteran Antoine Winfield did not practice on Wednesday, but that is not worthy of alarm. The Vikings have been diligent about monitoring Winfield’s reps, and it is paying big dividends this season. Winfield, in his 14th season, is having another stellar campaign and his health is a big reason for the Vikings increased performance against the pass. Frazier did mention that Winfield’s knee was bothering him a bit, and that added to the team’s decision to hold him out on Wednesday. It’s expected that Winfield will return to practice on Thursday.

What the Vikings need to beat the Rams ???….
defense…Defense !…and more DEFENSE !!!…
And run the ball with AP !!!…
By OTKalil2012 on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
It might be to late to try too many new things on offense..
But AP reminds me of John Riggins of the Redskins…Another very powerful RB in his day…
Riggins was doing a lot of running behind 3 TE sets they were some massive guys…That “imposed their will” on many defenses..Much like AP is doing now…
Why not bring in an extra tackle…And have him play the TE position…Like Reif is doing some for the Lions of late ???…
I mean its not like the other side doesn’t know we are going to run the ball anyway ???…So why not use some bigger men the TE position at times…To open some more holes up for AP ??
By vikes- or - die on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
Ya its not a bad idea to run a smash mouth running attack. Like you say, every one knows we will be running. I am hoping our receivers are getting a lot of run blocking reps. Peterson does not need much and he is off to the races. Play action pass should start taking off. Our “O” line is doing a good job pass blocking, so let’s pound away.
By realviking on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
Why don’t we use Rudolph in the deep middle like the Patriots, Saints, 49ers, and chargers use their tightends.
He’s tall and can catch the ball over defenders. When the Rams put the safeties in the box send Rudolph deep he’ll have 1 on 1 with either a linebacker or safety.
By vikes- or - die on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
Sorry, Our “O” line is doing a good job RUN BLOCKING, I meant to say.
By realviking on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
I think we have the best run blocking line in the league they open holes and I always see Kalil running with AP.
Our receivers do a pretty good job blocking to they’re always around to block that last defender for AP.
By vikes- or - die on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
Deep middle is a good idea if we can give Ponder enough time for the route to develope. To many times we have melt downs in our pass protection. I don’t think Ponder can be holding the ball to long this week because the Rams have a great pass rush. But its a great idea and I would love to see it happen.
By VikingFanatic209 on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
ya that is 1 thing our receivers deserve credit 4….I always see Jenkins setting a good block and I agree with the xtra tackle idea I have thought of that a few times over the course of the season it would b nice to see that oversized package on the field especially in 3rd and short situations………Skol Vikes!!!!!!!!!!!
By realviking on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
Ponder should come out in shotgun fake hand off to AP so the defense can bite then throw one of his special floaters to Rudolph.
Or play action fake to AP, Rudolph act like he’s about to block then take off and Ponder throw his special floater it doesn’t take a lot of time I’ve seen other offenses such as 49ers run that against aggressive defenses.

Frazier just made a statemement Ponder will be playing on the Vikings 10 years from now.
“Having to drop back and throw it 30 times doesn’t necessarily have to be a part of your development,” Frazier said. “There are a lot of things that go into developing at that quarterback position, and it just so happens he’s in a situation where he’s playing with the best in the business at a position. One day, Adrian is going to retire, 10 years from now, and maybe Christian won’t have that same luxury and more will be on his shoulders. But for the time being, it’s going to revolve around 28.”

Draft a QB before doing that…
Open a QB competition in training camp next year…With young QB prospect…
Along with MBT…Or maybe still Webb…At least into training camp…
Teams don’t trade or drop starting QB material…They sign them to extensions…

Here is a little “tid bit” of info I saw last week also…
I haven’t seen even Fred mention about in last Sundays game…Who I thought might say something about that ???…
Loadholt was getting me pretty upset with his “false start” penalties….Until I saw, what it looked to me…Ponder yelling hut…And Loadholt seemed to just be the first man off the ball before the rest of the O-line…Just by that “split second”…
I think that is why he kept having such a confused look on his face coming back to the huddle ???…
I didn’t tape the game…But sure would like to check those penalties against Loadholt on his false starts…I think he had the snap counts right…
Maybe not though ???…

@Mike B,
Ponder will probably start all three ball games, but I hope that the Vikings coaches have the COMMON SENSE to put in Joe Webb if the game seems to be leaving us behind.
Perhaps they think they can develop Joe Webb by not allowing him to go on the field. Kirk Warner was developed that way, once he hit the NFL he didn’t play much. Bart Starr missed a lot of playing time his first four years.
But how many times have you seen people sit on the bench when they should have been starting. They make that mistake on all levels pee wee, high school, college, and the pros. Experts CAN be wrong.

Adrian Peterson racks up two more touchdowns for everyone’s fantasy team, including mine (“Pizza the Hut”). That’s cool for fantasy, not for reality, as the St. Louis Rams’ front four should give Christian Ponder fits. The second-year quarterback desperately needs his big tight end, Kyle Rudolph, to show up for this game, or else the Rams’ pass rush is going to bury him. Rudolph had a goose egg last week. For Sam Bradford and the Rams’ offense, protecting the football is key — something St. Louis has done well, with only 17 turnovers on the season. #MINvsSTL St Louis -24 Vikings-17

No matter what happens in next three games, lets not kid ourselves, Ponder will be the starting QB. Although they say he needs to keep working on his foot work and pocket presence and accuracy, they still stand behind him based on other sucessfull QBs that went thru the same growing pains. We keep throwing out there that Webb should start but he had his chance with Chilly and Frazier and both of them didn’t make that move. I agree if Ponder struggles in these 3 games I would have to pull him because these games are important. I think if we had better receivers and Ponder was struggling then that move would be made. The organization stands behind their pick at QB and will have to take a lot more to admit that they made a bad decision on this guy.

It would be nice to hear from the wide receivers’ coach on how their unit can contribute in the remaining 3 games. When is their “defining moment;” does it coincide with Christian’s “defining moment”? I like to see this unit put in a pleasant surprise this December; perhaps, some razzle dazzle plays? How about Webb as a receiver? He might eke out a touchdown, he runs pretty good after the catch.

The Minnesota Vikings were over the moon about getting Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker via trade in 1989. The rest of the NFL wasn’t, not because of what he did for the Vikings, but what the trade built for the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson ultimately received six Vikings draft picks. Two of those were used on the NFL’s all-time leading rusher in Emmitt Smith, and a multi-time All-Pro in Darren Woodson. The other picks were used in trades, one of which resulted in the acquisition of Russell Maryland. The Dallas dynasty was born.

Excellent idea using the “stretch play”…The Vikings haven’t used that play this season….Get that O-line and AP shifting left…And then have Ponder roll out right…
A problem I have noticed all season long….Coaching has not had Ponder work on “selling” the play action more ???…Ponder needs to play fake better…Those quick jabs at a play fake is not fooling the DE’s and LB’s on defense much…Ponder does few pump fakes…Shoulder fakes…etc…
Ponder needs a guy like Favre to help him out…Ponder needs to learn how to “deceive” the defense better…If you want to see a young QB “sell the play action pass”….Watch RG3…He does an outstanding job at it…
By OTKalil2012 on Dec 13, 2012 | Reply
But the problem with RG3 doing his play action so well…Shanahan is running RG3 all the time…RG3 is a QB…Not a RB…
Shanahan will ruin that young mans career…And it won’t take long at this rate of physical abuse RG3 is taking…
RG3 will not last long in the NFL under that kind of punishment…Not long at all…

The “option” has 2 designs in mind…Either the RB takes the hand off, when the QB buries it in his middle…Or the QB decides to “run” the ball himself…

Shanahan designs plays to get his QB hit ???…That is wrong…

All Ihave to say is that I have been reading all of these blogs here all week and people are at least sounding a little more up-beat. I think our chances are good to make the playoffs. I would love toe see Chicago beat the packers, and then lose the rest of the games and the same for Green Bay- I just want them to lose all of the last 3. That would be the coolest choke ever and be amazing for us fans. All we can do now is stock up on cold beverages, scream loud and let destiny fall where it may. All of the Ponder skeptics (Which have included me) are going to find out if he has the skill to pull off some wins the last 3 games. If he does, I think we all have to suck it up and give him props for hanging in there with such tough criticism and pressure to succeed. I truly hope the kid comes through. It would be a great success story for the Vikes. Heaven knows we need one right now. Peterson is a huge story for us this year. I am so glad the man is not of this world. I hope he can hit his goal of becoming the all-time rushing leader. That would solidify his MVP…

I agree Troutdaddy. At least after the past two years we can watch games knowing we have a chance to win. Ponder may prove to be very good in the future– way too early to throw him out. But I do hope the coaches would make moves to ensure games are won– benching Ponder may be good for him. I have that feeling I did about San Fran for the HOU game– major upset. Vikings will go in and shock them.

Rams will throw the ball all day, try to get a lead early and then hope to contain AP. Rams play alot like the Lions – in fact Bradford and Stafford have almost identical stats. So our pass rush and corners need to be ready. Ponder won’t light it up (he never does), but I have a feeling he’ll be able to take some shots down the middle of the field against the Rams and should be able to get a good amount of yds moving outside the pocket.
I’m sticking with my prediction: Vikes 24 Rams 16
Peterson: 26 atts/136 yds, TD
Ponder: 15/28, 215 yds, 2 TD, INT
