Emptying Out The Vikings-Bears Notebook

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 11, 2012 – 4:51 pm

On Wednesday morning the NFL calendar is going to flip from Week 14 to Week 15, which means now is the time to empty out the notebook from last weekend’s victory over the Chicago Bears. Here are a few of my final thoughts…

Jared Allen’s Effort
In the NFL, it’s not often that we feel compelled to credit a player for giving maximum effort. But that’s what I’m going to do here. The Bears had a 1st and 10 from their 15, and they handed the ball of to RB Matt Forte. Going wide right, Forte turned the corner and began sprinting down the right (Vikings) sideline. Jared Allen, having lined up on the opposite side of where the play was heading, saw Forte break contain and began sprinting. He took an aggressive angle, and after several moments of all-out sprinting, Allen finally angled Forte off and pushed him out of bounds. Unfortunately, Forte had stepped out of bounds an instant before Allen shoved him, so the officials flagged him for unnecessary roughness and enforced a 15-yard penalty. But you can hardly blame Allen, after sprinting about 60 yards across the field, to not have the wherewithal to stop on a dime and refrain from pushing Forte out of bounds after catching him.

It was a great play by Allen because he could easily have never taken off to try and catch Forte and instead relied on a teammate closer to Forte to take a less aggressive angle and still catch him before he broke away. Instead, Allen took it upon himself to be the one to catch Forte. The end result was nowhere near ideal because the 15-yard penalty tacked on to the 36-yard run set the Bears up with a 1st and 10 from the Vikings 34, but Allen and Co. were able to force a punt just 3 plays later. Plus, the effort Allen gave is a good indication that this team is playing hard and giving everything it has to make a late-season push.

Final Word (For Now) On Ponder
I basically explained this in the Monday Morning Mailbag, but it’s my belief that the hyper-analysis on Ponder and the angst over whether he can be the QB of the future in Minnesota should subside momentarily to the more team-centric and relevant issue of the Vikings push to the playoffs. There’s no question Ponder needs to improve his play – he will be the first to acknowledge that. The sub 100-yard passing outings are hard for fans to stomach given the fact that Ponder was the 12th overall pick and is being groomed to be a franchise quarterback. But if you can refrain from analyzing Ponder through that lens and instead focus on what Ponder and the Vikings need to do to win games this season, you’ll be a happier Vikings fan and you’ll be better able to A) appreciate the season Adrian Peterson is having and B) appreciate the fact that the Vikings are playing meaningful games in December for the first time since 2009.

AP For 2K?
Can he get to 2,000? Adrian Peterson has 1,600 yards rushing through 13 games and needs to average 133.3 yards per game over the final 3 to reach the 2,000-yard mark. Only 6 other RBs in NFL history have done it. I think Adrian will get there, and if he does it will be an impressive accomplishment on a number of levels. Obviously he’s coming back from the knee injury. But also, he’s doing it while the Vikings have struggled to move the ball through the air and while Percy Harvin has been unavailable due to injury. And, if Peterson reaches 2,000, he’ll have done it after facing 3 consecutive Top 15 rushing defenses over the final few weeks of the season.

Jerome Felton Having a Pro Bowl-Caliber Season
A couple of big-name free agent acquisitions haven’t worked out according to plan for the Vikings. But there’s another free agent the team acquired this past offseason who has worked out better than most imagined.

It’s FB Jerome Felton. The guy is playing out of his mind and is having a Pro Bowl-caliber season. He’s worthy of your Pro Bowl vote.

I was glad to see Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier mention Felton in his press conference on Monday.

“Jerome at the fullback position is an unsung hero,” Frazier said. “We’re playing a lot more two-back than we played a season ago and it’s really helped us. We went into this offseason saying that we wanted to be able to find a fullback to really be a lead blocker for Adrian because we felt like some of his best runs have come when he had a lead blocker. Now he might differ from that, but you put the tape on and you see that’s true. Jerome has done a terrific job of doing everything we’ve asked him to do as a lead blocker and he’s had a lot to do with the success we’ve had running the football.”

Sherels, Burton To Step Up If Jefferson Can’t Go
CB A.J. Jefferson suffered a concussion near the end of Sunday’s win over the Bears, leaving the Vikings even more short-handed at the position. Starter Chris Cook is already out, of course, so that means Brandon Burton and Marcus Sherels will have to step up if Jefferson isn’t able to play on Sunday in St. Louis. As for Cook, he can start practicing with the team on a more regular basis and could return as soon as next week against the Houston Texans.

    Nice article,

However, I tend to disagree with the sentiment to the “hyper-analysis” of Christian Ponder.

I realize that Leslie Frazier’s game plan is to have him throughout the season and that the evaluation of his progress will be based on his performance of this season in its entirety.

Personally I think that I’ve seen enough to say that Christian Ponder may decrease our chances of pushing to the post-season. I think that someone like Joe Webb should be given a shot because Ponder’s performance has been sub-par.

The ones who are over analyzing Ponder’s play are the apologists who are giving him 1000 reasons on why it’s everyone else’s fault and not Ponder’s

All of the sane fans realize that Ponder is NOT a franchise QB nor is he capable of playing at even the most modest of an average QB level.

There is always just at least one b0nehead who comes on here and tries to defend Ponder which leads into the back and forth about how terrible of a QB he is.

I also realize that football is a team sport, however, IMHO, we’d have an even better record if we had good QB play.

I can’t say that I like Ponder’s decisions and also his lack of arm strength (as evidenced on multiple occasions this year).

He may not be instant results…but I think someone like Joe Webb, who has been on the team longer, deserves a shot at getting us to the post-season because Ponder’s performance has been THAT bad.

Ponder AKA hmmm Is it Ponder’s fault that the defense has had how many offside penalties, how many receivers have dropped b@lls., the OL can’t p@ss block, missed tackles. Let’s be real. The outstanding player on the team is Adrian Peterson and he’s fumbled a few this year too. So mistakes all around rest of you need to face up to that We are in a good place to be in the hunt for the playoffs.

QBs like Luck and RG3 come around every 10 years so its kind of stupid to assume that Ponder should be playing like them. The truth is its hard to get a franchise QB in the first round. Its very hit and miss. It looks like we missed.

Onething that isn’t talked much about is how bad our pass protection is. We have great run blocking but Ponder gets no time. And when you can’t set your feet it’s hard to make good throws. And as Ponder has shown he isn’t good outside the pocket.

The football season is very short. A team wins 4 in a row,the fans are reserving
    Super Bowl tickets.(Arizona)
Then a team can lose 4 out of 5 (Chicago) and the world is collapsing.
Look at Washington. Their head coach was ready to pack it in at 3-6 and look at them now.
If we can put together a solid 3 games here(all wins)we would be the surprise
    of the NFC.
The point of all this rambling is that its too late to pull Ponder(sorry Fred Jones).

    2. Do the Vikings have any razzle dazzle plays, just to mix it up from the AP game plan? How about a single play designed for Joe Webb?

Final Word (For Now) On Ponder
” I basically explained this in the Monday Morning Mailbag, but it’s my belief that the hyper-analysis on Ponder and the angst over whether he can be the QB of the future in Minnesota should subside momentarily to the more team-centric and relevant issue of the Vikings push to the playoffs. There’s no question Ponder needs to improve his play – he will be the first to acknowledge that. The sub 100-yard passing outings are hard for fans to stomach given the fact that Ponder was the 12th overall pick and is being groomed to be a franchise quarterback. But if you can refrain from analyzing Ponder through that lens and instead focus on what Ponder and the Vikings need to do to win games this season, you’ll be a happier Vikings fan and you’ll be better able to A) appreciate the season Adrian Peterson is having and B) appreciate the fact that the Vikings are playing meaningful games in December for the first time since 2009.”

I’ll give ya credit for coming out and responding about this subject. To whatever degree I may be a fan of yours, Wobby, I can at least undestand your position. You are an employee of the Vikings franchise, and as such, would find yourself looking for alternate employment if you came out blasting this team. It’s gotta be a part of your job to look for silver linings with this team, and try to give an optimistic synopsis. You catch a lot of flack for some of your postings, but I don’t think certain fans understand the big picture. If you focused with such disregard for the Vikings’ goals, you would be replaced relatively quickly. And your replacement would look for silver linings with this team, or he’d share your fate. Bottom line, no matter who MIN has writing for the team, they will always have to be team oriented first. I would imagine that some of your thoughts on our games are not all that different than ours. We have the luxury of not having to find silver linings before we speak. I’m trying my best to see the silver linings you provide, and be a better fan. Bleeding purple is one thing we all agree on, if the only, lol.

Having said that…I respectfully, fully, and in all ways disagree with your post here.

You know you all can sit there blog about Ponder till end of the world, but does it change one thing, No. People are still going to buy tickets to the games and there will still be fans cheering (or booing). The fact this team is better than last year is not relavant for some of you. That might be enough for both Frazier and Ponder to keep their jobs next year. Overall the team is better, but at times makes the same mistakes. A couple more pieces here and there and this team might be ready for a playoff run maybe as early as next season. Fans really have no power over who starts and who doesn’t. I look at how the coaches are leaning a accept or reject but knowing there’s nothing I can do about it. I accept Ponder has had issues, but the coaches are not ready to give up on him. So it makes no sense to keep on harping about. Feel free to continue your rants, but doing the same thing over and over and you get the same outcome boarders insantity. I would rather cheer my team and hope for the best.

Peterson came back! And boy did he ever…

Winfield came back! At 5’10”, and 14 years in, he’s done his part.

Specials teams unit came back! Maybe not record breaking, but so much more consistent.

Blair Walsh looks like the real deal. Even his few misses are easily excused in his rookie year. More importantly, his successes have come at crucial moments and at super distances.

I agree with Mike B. As a fan, I am just happy that the Vikes are moving in the right direction and are doing it with the players that they have drafted. You can sit here all day and bash Ponder and believe that he will never be a good QB but YOU DONT KNOW THAT. He is obviously struggling right now but he is still young and inexperienced. Drew Brees went through the same thing and had almost identical numbers his first 3 seasons but it all started to click for him in his 4th season. I am not saying that Ponder is or will ever be as good as Drew Brees but I do believe he CAN be solid given enough time and experience.

I dont think its very likely that the Vikes would get Fitz but I would LOVE to see him in the purple!

  166. By Kathy P on Dec 12, 2012 | Reply

Had to type something simplistic to get my point across because, apparently I typed something in my post that was unacceptable. Back to my thoughts: We need , according to most of the posters and just now becoming apparent to Frazier some WR’s for Ponder to throw to. I say, if LF should become available to be aggressive and try to pick him up. The question arises, are they going to cough up some bucks in order to get him/would he even want to come to MN with the current status quo? Frazier & CO need to be aggressive with recruitment during the off-season. They need to find some scouts who are not mentally challenged either.

  167. By Jayson on Dec 12, 2012 | Reply

I think Ponders inability to generate the passing game is based on 2 factors: 1. He is just not comfortable in the pocket right now. I think the reason he is so uncomfortable right now is because the OL is not providing CONSISTANT pass protection. 2. The WR core is not getting open FAST ENOUGH. In the west coast offense, you need WR’s who can get open quick and get big chuncks of yards after the catch. Our WR’s (Percy is the exception) are NOT a good fit for Musgraves offense, PERIOD!

When you consider that Ponder is young and inexperienced, the OL is not consistant in providing pass protection and the WR core is doing the things that they need to do to make this kind of pass attack work, it seems pretty clear that Ponder is only a part of the problem

  168. By Kathy P on Dec 12, 2012 | Reply

At Jayson: Well one can hope/wish for miracles. I have seen the frustration on LF face this year and he might be ready to leave the Cardinals if the right team would pursue him aggressively enough. Just saying this as if we had the WR’s, who are experienced enough, can make plays, then what excuses for Ponder could they make over and over again? That in inself would lend credence to the fact that it isnt the WR’s at all that are the problem.

  169. By Jayson on Dec 12, 2012 | Reply

Kathy P, I totally agree with you and I think that the Vikes problem with the passing game can be fixed by finding the right players (WR’s) for this Musgrave version of the west coast Offense

  170. By Jayson on Dec 12, 2012 | Reply

I am certainly not saying that Ponder is innocent here because he has certainly made some very poor decisions but we have seen flashes of him doing some very good things

  171. By Jayson on Dec 12, 2012 | Reply

I dont agree with those who say that Ponder cant make the throws and what not becasue we have seen him do those things. In other words, I dont think there is any lack of physical ability on his part. I just think that the problem is mmuch more than just Ponder. It seems that its either Musgraves system is flawed or the players within his system are not grasping it the way they should which would make it difficult on a seasoned veteran QB, let alone a young one like Ponder

  172. By rocksalt on Dec 12, 2012 | Reply

Ponder needs to at least not be a disadvantage to our team. Winnable game in GB if we had a “game manager” type of QB. So far, the bar has been set ridiculously low for a 1st round QB pick in his 2nd season.

When guys do get open, he can’t get the ball to them! Our oline is bad but they do provide him with a decent pocket from time to time! He bails out too quick which takes out his wrs on the other side! I rarely see ponder stand strong and te pocket and make a throw while sacrifice getting hit!

    Kathy P & Jayson…

    Excellent remarks !!…Drop in more often !!! ; )

Kathy P…Totally agree on Fitz…I am usually not a “free agent pick up” kind of fan….
But Fitz brings way to much veteran WR talent to the table…That the Vikings passing game is starving for !!…

Fitz would not only help out Ponder…But all our young WR core…

And who knows if Percy is coming back ???…

  179. By OTKalil2012 on Dec 12, 2012 | Reply

In week 10…I put up a little thread predicting how I felt the Vikings remaining games might unfold…

Hoping that the defense might be peaking near the end of the season…And that the passing game would add more balance to our running attack…

Well the defense is doing very well…But I didn’t predict our passing game to get better…Without PERCY HARVIN !!!…I’m sorry for that…Ponder is also, I’m sure….

The reason I didn’t want to be too optimistic until those scenarios came together…I because this TEAM with Percy Harvin…I believe, would have had just as good a chance at winning that super bowl trophy at the end of this season….As any other team is the league !!!…

But………………Taking out Harvin out of that offensive equation…And even with the beast AP running the ball….Hurts our chances a great deal…
We just DO NOT have enough WR talent this year to allow for Harvins loss… : (

But then again ???…Try to explain that to a VERY YOUNG team…

That believes in themselves as a TEAM !!!….Or their head coach !!!….

Maybe its time for the fans to start believing in their team !!!…

Because from Ponder to AP…And EVERYTHING in between…This team is playing their hearts out for their fans and owners !!!…

So how about trying to do a little less complaining…And try a little more cheering for their efforts !!!!!…

    GO VIKINGS !!!!….GO TEAM !!!!……..

Highlight reel? Who gives a rat’s about a highlight reel – I could put together a highlight reel for Ponder (of course I may have to use the same play from different camera angles a few times to beef it up).

Read the article Fred, and THEN comment.

Not to mention the youtube “highlight reel” of Joe Webb in 2011 was all about him running the ball, because he can’t throw.

Because I have turned over a new leaf and am not Bashing Ponder this week, Santa just informed me that I am no longer on the naughty list. So, I gave him my wish list for the Vikes to Make the play-offs. He just smiled. Not sure what that means, but I am at least in a better mood and more hopeful going into this Rams game. Honestly I think that all of us fans (including me) should just kind of shut up about Ponder and let his play and this season speak for itself. We have 3 games left and regardless of the outcomes of the games it is going to be an opportunity for this team to evaluate and move forward. If we can win another game then I will be happy because that was my expectation to win half of the games. I thought 9 and 6 was a good number for this year and what I predicted so that is still a possibility. I obviously want to win out like all of you do and the Vikes are going to need all of the fan support to do it. So- I for one am going to quit my bashing and try to be optimistic and hopeful. Too much negativity bringing people down. Not good for December…

OT is right– let’s enjoy these last three games no matter what the outcome– we went from the basement as a joke at 3-13 to probably 8-8 or better — we are respectable this year– next year we should be a contender– the year after for sure we will be one of the prime candidates for the big dance. BAROOOOOOO

the way ponder is playing…anybody can match it! why not let other people play and see what they can do! We are rebuilding right?? we know ponder can’t get the job done, now lets see who can whether it’s joe or MBT! By doing that we can actually say we gave everybody a shot and if they all can’t get the job done, we can go out and trade, sign or draft somebody else! I mean frazier have been rotation the safety position and right guard position all year long. I personally believe Sanford gives us a better chance of winning because of his play but somehow frazier is still rotating mistral in! Then comes the wrs postion!! I would like aromashudu to get less playing time and wright more. But he’s been rotating guys all year long too! With that being said, frazier don’t want to swtich up qb because he don’t want to admit his mistake of taking ponder so high. Don’t get me wrong now, at first I hated the ponder pick. I believe we could have gotten somebody else. I then change my mind when he first started against the packers and put up good numbers with almost the same squad as in wrs. I would have thought every game he would improve but hes not. I stop believing that he’s a franchise caliber qb better yet a game manager because he sure cant manage the game.

    @James,

As much as many of us would like to see Joe Webb take the field, we have to expect Ponder to play as long as he is healthy.

    @Northwoods,

With the improvement of the O Line things are jist a weeee bit different than they were in 2010 and 2011, which was the last time Joe Webb played.

If you want to say JOE can’t throw, first you have to give him the opportunity…
    TO TAKE THE FIELD!!!

    @Titus,

Chr@stian Ponder might yet improve to the level we want him to be at.

Jones believes that JOE is the superior talent!!!
