Commitment To Run Key To Breaking Bears On 3rd Down
Posted by on December 7, 2012 – 7:31 amWhen it comes to the battle on 3rd down between the Vikings offense and the Bears defense, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is that the Vikings rank just 23rd in 3rd-down offense (35.5%) and the Bears rank 3rd in 3rd-down defense (34.4%). The good news, though, is that the Vikings can flip that stat around on Sunday by using their dominant rushing attack.
The Bears yield 4+ yards on 1st down rushes at a 47.7% clip this year, which ranks 26th in the NFL. Given that stat, it’s unusual that the Bears would have such a good 3rd-down defense. You’d think that facing 2nd-and-6 or less nearly half the time would lead to much success on 3rd down against the Bears. Here’s the problem: teams don’t stay committed to the run against this Bears defense.
On 2nd downs against the Bears this season, opponents have passed the ball 62.1% of the time; they’ve called 148 passes compared to just 90 rushes. And while the Bears are one of the NFL’s worst 1st-down rushing defenses, they are one of the NFL’s top 2nd-down passing defenses. The Bears have yielded just a 67.1 passer rating on 2nd down, 3rd-best in the NFL, and they are 1st in the NFL with 8 INTs on 2nd down. What this means is that teams get ahead of schedule in the down-and-distance on 1st down via the ground game, but then they go to the air on 2nd down, which allows the Bears defense to catch up and, more times than not, put the opposing offense in 3rd-and-long.
In total, the Bears defense has faced the 3rd-fewest rushes in the NFL. Teams run the ball against the Bears 23.25 times per game. In contrast, the Vikings average 28 carries per game.
Long story longer, Chicago has one of the NFL’s best defenses, on any down. They lead the NFL in takeaways with 34, they are 2nd in scoring defense, they have a top 10 defense against the run and the pass, and they rank 5th in total defense. But the numbers above illustrate that teams haven’t challenged them by staying committed to the run. The Vikings have the best RB in the NFL and the League’s 3rd-ranked run game. If any team can challenge this Bears defense on the ground it’s the Vikings.
It will be interesting to see if that’s what the Vikings do on Sunday when the Bears visit Mall of America Field.

Do you think it would be possible for the Vikes to pick up QB Alex Smith from SF next season.
By vikingbob136 on Dec 7, 2012 | Reply
Ponder can’t complete a pass over 20 yards so AP should just take a direct snap from center and run the ball 35 times.

Tell Gerhart he doesn’t need pads because he probably won’t play.
Tell Joe Webb to dress warmly because he won’t play.
Tell Frazier to help the offense because Musgrave can’t.

I couldn’t help but notice that the lyrics to “Sister Christian”, a 1984 hit by Night Ranger, contains some eerily prophetic lines when applied to our QB.
So, with apologies to Night Ranger, here is ” Mr. Christian “……..
Mister Christian
Oh the time has come
And you know that you’re the only one
To say O.K.
Where you going
What you looking for
You know those boys
Don’t want to play no more with you
It’s true……..
Babe you know
You’re growing up so fast
And mama’s worrying
That you won’t last
To say let’s play……..

I agree with the Webb dress warmly and have your clipboard as he will be on the bench. Ponder is going to start this game and I think it’s the right move for this team. We have 4 games left and our playoff chances are alive but barely. I think Frazier needs to stay with his plan for the season to the point that Ponder is not losing a game to his performance from here out. At that point bring in Webb or MBT and have them finish the game. I think this should be the plan for the rest of the season. When there is no chance for making the playoffs open it up for Webb or MBT to play a half.

I think some misunderstood my blog. I was saying if Harvin is being disruptive to the team. Like Moss, he should be cut from the team. That is a coaches and GM decision. You don’t need a disruptive player on the team. I don’t care how frustrated you are or how talented you are. You are getting paid by the organizaiton. You need to keep your mouth shut until the doors are closed or you leave or asked to leave. I must add I hope that is not the case here as I really like Harvin’s playing ability, but you can’t keep a troublemaker on the team.
By northwoodsv2 on Dec 7, 2012 | Reply
Mike, why do you feel the benchmark rating period has to be a complete season?
Many, many people (not just fans, but sports analysts/commentators, even Percy Harvin – don’t you think he is a good judge of football talent?) don’t believe in Ponder after what we’ve been shown thus far.
In my line of work, a new hire gets a 3-month probation period to prove they can do the job. That equates to 1/4 of a football season. Ponder has had much more than that.

The coach and obviously the GM have spent a lot of effort to promoting Ponder as the QB of the Vikings. They feel he isn’t to the point of putting in a back up or cutting ties. So no I don’t agree with those here that feel he has nothing left to improve on. I am willing to give the Organization all season to show that Ponder is the guy. As a fan I get disappointed about lost games, but that doesn’t mean I don’t support the team for the rest of the season. Childress had 4 years to improve this team to be Superbowl calibre. He couldn’t do it through the draft, so he got FAs to build the team. He almost got it done, but then let it all slide. Frazier in his second year has improved this team from last year. He wants to stick with Ponder, and I see no reason not to support that decision. If he continues to slide the rest of the year then not only should Ponder be reevaluated so should the entire coaching staff. IMO

Yes please get Alex Smith, actually anyone but Vick. I am tired of the stupidity but hey Sunday is coming and we get to watch it all over again. If Ponder sucks in the first quarter he needs to be benched plain and simple. Personally I do not like Webb is quarterback so hopefully they won’t play him either. Either way, if Ponder sucks and is not benched then Fraser needs to be fired.
By MuskyFever on Dec 7, 2012 | Reply
I am not a Ponder fan. If it were up to me he would be benched at least for a game or a half already. But Its not that there is nothing to improve on… HE HAS EVERYTHING TO IMPROVE ON!!! I can’t think of one thing he does right other than hand the rock to AP. And sometimes he even drops the ball then too. I just feel no comfort from him as our QB. Just reading his eyes when they show him on a replay.. He looks TERRIFIED!!!!!!!!!!! Whether he starts the rest of the season or not, if he starts to play poorly they better pull him back to the becnh. Everytime he plays terrible and the coaches continue to do nothing is where my frustration really comes in. It seems as if they can’t make that decision on thier own, more like the need zigy to hold their hand or something

Even if Ponder earns his paycheck ($375,000) and somehow manages to keep the ball on our side of the field, and takes a win for (His Team) as he puts it, that will not prove anything that he is the chosen one to lead the Vikings anywhere!
His paycheck is bottom pay for a GOOD QB, & about what he is worth anywhere.

They feel he isn’t to the point of benching……..which says they are fine with losing games that we could be winning right now.

BB7… I usually agree with what you say.. Even if he wins out (doubtfull) it will be because AP stomped on D’s. Not because Ponder threw for 300+ and four TD’s in a game..
I don’t think he is fit to lead. He can start the rest of the year for all I care, but after 22 starts and 23 games played.. no improvement has been made, time for a new QB and new leadership from the OC side of the ball

All this speculation about Harvin is frustrating. I know if I was Harvin I would be even more vocal about what is happening. Seriously lets put ourselves in his shoes. He gets paid to catch the ball thats about it. So if you were paid to catch a ball and the organization tells you we have a QB for you but there is a problem, he can’t play QB and you will have to try and catch the ball if he sees you, and its some where near you, I believe you would get frustrated as well. Ponder can’t even sell a play action pass with the best RB in the game. Coaches are needed to be fired right now or we are gonna lose our only WR that is worth anything. Whats next? Peterson has to rush 60 times a game for 400 yards so we can compete? Great lets get him injured again.

I wonder how Ponder is going to react when he comes out for the first series and gets booed right off the bat. I wonder if he will do what Alex Smith did a few years back when his stadium was calling for Carr. And he came out and scored two TDs in less than 4 minutes. Or if he will crumble from the non support. Part of me feels like he will actaully play better to prove us wrong… But then logic kicks in and I realize that if he starts forcing throws against the Bears D he is going to throw pick after pick after pick

At first I thought “wow he throws a really nice touch pass” but I now realize that that is the only throw in his arsenal because he does not have a strong enough arm for any other throw.

Dalton, and Newton had good seasons last year without any offseason activities Ponder at least got to sit and wait but those guys were immediate starters.
I’m not waiting for Ponder to develop that guy has shown he’s a bust in the makings. The Panthers drafted Clauson high they gave him one season to prove his self during that season he got benched because he sucked. So sad to hear that Harvin is out for the rest of the season. I think that a lot of people are worried that Harvin is going to go play somewhere else. Do not fuel this rumor. Harvin is not going to go anywhere. The Vikes know what they have in him. The will keep him around. His attitude is not one of a Diva. He is just passionate about playing and winning and even though at times he has been vocal, he is not going to ruin a good thing here. In the mean time it doesn;t sound like the coaches are going to use anyone other than who is already here to fill his gap. All I can say is that Simpson and Wright are going to have a huge opportunity now to close out the season strong and make a name for themselves. I sure hope they realize the opportunity that is in front of them. Mark my words on this- if Ponder struggles in the game this week and can’t show improvement, then we are going to see a change at QB possibly in the game. I think that Frazier knows that this is the game that breaks the camels back and it is now on his head too. After all it is his decision and if he does not have the guts to do it, then he is showing his worth as a leader in not making the tough call. It is do or die time….

Frazier is afraid to bench players who’s not performing no wonder why Harvin yelled at him. I would be mad to if I was playing my heart out and my offensive coordinator and quarterback were consistently stinking it up and my head coach acts like he doesn’t see it.
All we get is the same excuse when a player pays bad he says I saw some good things out their,I have to go back and look at the tape. I can understand a player pm the field saying they have to look at the tape but Frazier is on the sidelines how can he never find the problem during games.
Every team makes half time adjustments when they struggle but not Frazier he takes away the most successful piece and continue with the worst.
Why does it seem like we have the same game plan every week no matter who we play. What is Frazier seeing on these tapes that he so call watches, this guy is a joke.

This is where egos kick in and this organization doesn’t want to admit just yet that they made a mistake with Ponder!!! He was a huge reach at that pick, but with the Titans trading up and taking Jake Locker, I believe the Vikes panicked and thought they better pick a QB now instead of picking one in the later rounds!! I still think the Vikes could have taken Ponder in the second round and ended up with a better first rounder!!!!

Frazier failed so if Spielman don’t get rid of him and let him fail again they both won’t have a job. I think Spielman should know by now that Frazier is not the right guy to lead this team.

2. Can’t go through and anticipate his reads.
3. Can’t throw accurately.
4. He sucks.
5. Weak arm, not strong.

I have not watched the Musgrave presser, but I am not shocked that he said all of those things. Clearly he is an idiot. I thought he would at least have more knowledge of football. and especially the team he works for, but I suppose that was giving him too much credit.
What a D U M B A S S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Mr. Musgrave.
You are terrible at your job. At least know who you are coaching and what is going on, on the field so at least you don’t embarrass yourself. (which you did) it is hard for us as fans to understand why they are keeping someone on the job who is clearly incompitent. If you have any self respect, I think now is your time to retire. and stop while you think your ahead (clearly not the case). At least then you can brag about being the OC for the falcons during the regular season, since we know how talented you are in the offseason. Mr. Musgrave, Please get off our field. Your football IQ is lacking in serious fashion.

Maybe 2-3 inches they say. Vikings used to play in the snow. Wonder what happened.
Ponder wouldn’t make it in the snow, I’m thinking he would most likely throw into a snowbank on the sidelines, or hit Mustgraves in the beak…That would be OK !

Let’s draft Denard Robinson then we can run the most confusing offense ever. Webb, harvin, Peterson in the backfield in shotgun formation, sometimes Denard goes back there too. Otherwise, Denard spread out wide and comes in motion every play, if Webb or Denard keeps it, they also have the option to chuck it down field to one of our WR (that will be upgraded). First quadruple option ever.
But we would need Chip Kelly for this I think.

Contract statuses of head coach and general managers are usually kept under wraps, but Acee reports that Smith has two seasons and $4 million remaining on his current deal, while Turner is owed $3 million for the one year that remains on his current contract.
Acee goes on to report that Smith’s replacement appears to already be in the building.
When Smith is fired, director of player personnel Jimmy Raye could ascend to the general manager’s position, with current director of college scouting John Spanos, whose father owns the team, becoming his right-hand man. Raye has been with the Chargers since the 1996 season as a scout and director of college scouting, and has been in his current position overseeing the college and pro scouting departments since 2007.
Potential head-coaching candidates for the opening may include Oregon head coach Chip Kelly or Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton, whose defensive system would be a good fit for much of the current defensive personnel assembled by Raye. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and the NFL Network reports that current Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid could target that position once his expected firing takes place at the end of the regular season.

Minnesota Vikings – Losing two games in a row to divisional opponents makes the road to the playoffs an uphill battle from here on. To make matters worse, you have to square off against the Chicago Bears, who handled you two weeks ago. Adrian Peterson appears unstoppable on the football field this season, but you’ll need to get creative in your approach to getting Christian Ponder off the field for good. Peterson won’t be able to carry the team to the playoffs alone.

Until they actually hear all the dissatisfaction from the fans and maybe, just maybe, it will jolt them back to reality. All fans unite and get your voices heard at the Dome. Just wish I could be there to support/ stand with all of you.

I guess some have been wondering “who” our fearless leader Frazier would bring up and place on the 53 man…And replace Harvins spot ???…
Well I guess he “considered” doing the smart move…Before doing the dumb move…Hear is part of Tim Yotters report…
Tim Yotter..”With Percy Harvin on injured reserve, the Vikings were considering a move at the receiver position Friday, according to head coach Leslie Frazier, but opted to sign tackle Troy Kropog off the practice squad instead”…
Way to go Les !!!…We DESPERATELY need a WR…And you bring up a T from the practice squad ???…
Later in the article Yotter talks in great length about C Summers ( I believe was Yotters personal choice to bring up from the practice squad, as many other fans expected)…But leave it to Frazier to let us down again…Even saying the Vikings are pleased at WR…huh ???
Do not get confused about the write up about Summers…Because he was not the choice for the 53 man roster…Troy Kropog was promoted….
Here is the entire article….

I am really beginning to believe…Frazier has some kind of “false security”
that his job as head coach is not in jeopardy after this season ???…
If I am Spieman…There is NO WAY I am sticking with this horse & pony show that Frazier & Musgrave have been putting on this season !!…
A GM gets maybe 2 shots at getting things right at selecting a QB for the franchise…And maybe only as little as one shot ay choosing his own head coach to handle those QB choices…
Frazier & Musgrave are NOT the right choices for this team or Ponder…Or whoever Spielman might look at in the draft at QB…
Frazier has not even released “one” of these numerous terrible WR’s on this team for their poor play…
And then when the only good WR we have goes on IR he replaces that WR with a tackle ?????????…
I think Spielman is ready to make a move this off season…But at head coach more so than at QB…imo…
By OTKalil2012 on Dec 8, 2012 | Reply
This Viking teams structure is just screaming for the need of a NEW head coach !!!…
The ony way a rebuilding team really gels as one team taking on the personality of its new head coach…
Is through the draft !!!…
Spielman has a GREAT group of young players he found in this last springs draft…And will get plenty more this coming spring with 9 picks in hand for the 2013 draft…With the 2 extra picks being in the 4th and 6th rounds…
Do not look for ANY veteran free agent pick ups this next season …Unless there is a certain area on the team that is hurting big time with injury…
Spielman knows its youth and growing together, is what makes a team super bowl champions,,,
Not clinging onto underacheiving veterans or wanting players on other teams that are over 30 years old…Or declining in skill sets like Childress and Frazier seem to want on this team…
I see a head coach on the Vikings next season that loves new young players to develop !!!…
Not a head coach like Frazier worring about not having enough veterans on this team to help him teach new players…
That is your job Les !!!
I look for change this off season at head coach…Spielman is a SMART guy !!!…
And I only see youth coming into this team yet this spring through the draft…And few “young” free agents…If any…
By OTKalil2012 on Dec 8, 2012 | Reply
Another reason for a new head coach…(which I think is a minor reason..Some might think otherwise)…
Harvin most likely would be much easier to sign a contract extension…If Frazier was replaced with a head coach to match his own fire and passion for the game…Maybe a Gruden type head coach…Or a offensive coordinator like Jason Garrett (who I believe will be fired at Dallas)…
If Gruden and Garrett came to Minnesota…Harvin might even pay Spielman, for the chance to play under those 2 coaches ???…. ; )
Might do WONDERS for the Vikings fan base also…Who has been bored silly all season long with Frazier & Musgraves, conservative “Pop Warner football”….
Gruden could control Harvin…Where Childress and now Frazier…Can not !!

One thing all of you want to keep in mind. Minnesota Gov. Dayton.

OTkalil Garrett for Dallas is a defensive couch as I remember he would be a defensive coordinator. You know who I want in the draft manti te’o. He play with Harrison in notre dame and they had communication and would just make the defense better. I want Frazier fired. I would like to see bellick or gruden but gruden always says dumb stuff towards Vikings. I would want to see norv turner as our OC and still stay with Williams at defensive coordinator I like what he has done. But me as i think their won’t be many changes next year:\ only the OC gone and drafts and their. I would like to see Frazier go. To be honest he doesnt have it to be a head coach.

But it won’t be cute when 60,000 of those birds start singing– I don’t think Ponder has the composure to handle that– he will utterly self-destruct. And, seriously, it is not his fault — the coaches should not have him in games the way he is playing. It is like blaming a ten year old for a driving accident– you need to find the parents who let the child drive.

I’m tired of supporting terrible play at the QB position. Part of me wants Ponder to turn it around just because there is a sliver of hope for the playoffs. But once it’s a done deal like if we lose this game, I’ve seen enough. We have a enough of a body of work for Ponder and it’s not very good. This game is a good final test for him because it’s an absolute must win. As long as he plays well and HELPS to win keep him in to finish the season. If not I’d like to see what MBT has.
By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Dec 8, 2012 | Reply
The loss at Seattle is proving very costly– we need to evaluate MBT. The smart move is to play him– that is what I would do as coach. I would have MBT taking all the snaps in practice and see what we got– it sends a message to the whole team that no one player is above the team– and that every one must perform.

Let the current QB show his moxie and hopefully this year has just been a bad year and he will turn it around these weeks and give us fans something to be encouraged about next year. This team without Harvin is hard pressed to make it to the playoffs let alone win a game. For those of you who thought that this was the season we were going to go the playoffs are utterly crazy. This was an evaluation year and maybe a playoff run but not likely…

Spencer – MBT is not on the practice squad – he is on the 53 man roster.
Actually, if you look at last year’s stats versus this year’s stats for Ponder, there is some improvement in some areas: completion %, QB rating, sacks, and interception %, but others are lower: yards per pass, yards per run. I can’t remember the rest. My impression is that, overall, he is better but only slightly. I don’t think it is enough at this point, but I am willing to give him the rest of this season. Not that I have any say in the matter. He is taking off more – that, I believe, is because of poor OL line play and pressure from the defense. He is still learning to read defenses and to respond to what he sees by other than taking off. That’s gotta be a tough thing to learn. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Oh another supporting piece to the Frazier puzzle since many were blaming Spielman:
If Leslie Frazier doesn’t like what he sees from Christian Ponder on Sunday against the Bears, the Vikings coach has the power to bench him.
“That was one of the good things about when they hired me to be the head coach,” Frazier said this week. “They allowed me to make changes. Similar to what I had to do a year ago in Detroit. I can make those changes during the course of a game without having to get that red phone and get a call to (owner Zygi Wilf in) New York.”

I don’t like being a bandwagon person, but….I have to take issue with this “Give him more time” mentality. Been hearing it for years from our fans. It has become nails on a chalkboard for me. I understand certain things take time for developing. And I don’t subscribe to the “I need instant results or I call for heads to roll” mentality. But how much do you need to see? Some people will run a bad idea into the ground at the expense of prudent conclusions. I don’t like hearing our fans do it, but I’m more concerned that our organization does it. Sometimes there are simply no better alternatives, I understand. But this team HAS to stop making decisions this way. We seem to have a laundry list of excuses waiting for our failing projects, and it is SORRY to witness as a die-hard fan. No one wants to invest in an idea and fall short, and this sport is filled with pridefull people. The time has come for a warden to step into our organization and disrupt the “Give him more time” way of doing business.
Fans who suggest a change are accused of not having purple pride. That’s like saying I have no pride in my car because I want to change my flat tire. I DON’T need to give my flat tire “more time”.

Wonderful artical. Very well measured and put together with tons of facts to make clear conclusions. This article echos my thoughts that neither Ponder nor Webb will be a success for MIN, or in this league period! Silver linings for both, but big picture says MOVE ON. It’s become absurd that those who see this are accused of not being “true fans”, or “not understanding the game”. As in so many walks of life, it would seem that the “cool crowd” is again the ones with their finger the furthest from the pulse. Solid post, Parkway.

Good grief…watch football and understand what you see. Do some homework, and believe history. Ponder is not Aikman, or Manning, or whoever you want to compare him to. Webb is never going to be a HOFer, or go win the big dance. Really??? That’s what some of you truly believe when you watch their body of work? Ok.
By Kathy P on Dec 9, 2012 | Reply
Good post Dueyz. I like the comparison using the “flat-tire” technique. We, as fans, who have followed this organization for many, many yrs. get the picture as well. How long ,is long enough to prove to someone that you have progressed or digressed in Ponders case. It gets very frustrating to us all who sit here week after week hoping for a miracle. I never thought that my team would make it to the playoffs. But, at least, knowing that a couple of these games were within reach, and then stupid mistakes being made cost us, makes it even more frustrating. Now, Frazier brings up a defensive tackle, when he knows we need help on the WR’s side. Just ludicrous, not thinking at all. This too, is frustrating for us fans. No common sense being used. AND Frazier saying just last week, we need to look at getting help with the WR’s? We need to overall this team for sure. We need leadership who knows what they are doing and adjusting game plays week to week to improve themselves. This current coaching staff has not done this, hence,we keep in the same old black pit. It’s a day late and a dollar short at this time in the season, but I will continue to support my team as I always have. The only good thing we have going for this team is AP in my estimation. I truly wish him well will achieving his goal this year.

Every fan has a right to be as critical of Ponder as they want…Each fan sees each play a different way…
Why did Musgarve call a pass play on 2nd and 2, and 3rd and 2…With the best running back in football in your backfield ???…
The ball was thrown to late too Wright on that pass play…Coverage was getting there…
I thought Wright was wide open…etc, etc…
We all knew a long time ago…The game planning by Frazier and Musgrave was neglecting the passing game early in the season…And would cause us plenty of problems down the road if not corrected…
Well here we are…Frazier has his running game…And a passing game that is nonexistent…And everyone is mad at Ponder ??…
The passing game was put to the back burner, while Harvin was still playing…How do you expect Ponder to light things up now with the duds we have at WR now ???…
Eveyone is entitled their on opinion…But mine is this…Ponder will be handed a “get out of jail free” card the rest of this season…Being without Harvin the last few weeks, and now…The rest of this season…
I think there is plenty to blame to share all over with Ponder, WR, O-line and coaching…And not just on the arm or talent of Christian Ponder….

But I respect the opinions of Vikings fans who are fed up with what they see as our franchise QB getting progressively worse as the year goes along when you see other rookie and 2nd year QBs having reasonably good success. If you believe what Spielman says about Ponder being our franchise QB, then you have to seriously question whether the GM and the coaching staff are truly NFL caliber because Ponder’s success depends on who is playing around him (talent) and how they are prepared (coaching). Either situation, a potential franchise QB bust, or terrible player personnel/coaching, is unacceptable to many long-suffering Vikings fans.
Ponder, Webb whatever, I’m hoping to get a win against the Bears this week at home. GO VIKES
