Eye On 2,000

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 4, 2012 – 7:05 am

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson vowed to be better than ever in returning from a serious knee injury that ended his 2011 season and caused many to wonder if he’d ever be the same. As is typical for Peterson, he set the bar high and has gone above and beyond the expectations.

Through 12 games, Peterson leads the NFL in rushing with 1,446 yards, and he’s on pace for a career-high 1,928 yards. He has a 308-yard lead over Marshawn Lynch, who is 2nd in the NFL in rushing, and he leads Doug Martin and Alfred Morris by 340 yards. Peterson is averaging 6.2 yards per carry, the 3rd-highest single-season per carry average among runners with at least 200 attempts in NFL history.

Speaking of setting the bar high, Peterson has also stated in the past that his goal is to surpass the 2,000-yard mark, a feat accomplished just 6 times in NFL history. While his 16-game pace would have him fall 72 yards short, keep in mind that over the last six games he’s averaged 157.8 rushing yards per contest. At that rate over the season’s final 4 games, Peterson would surpass the 2,000-yard mark and would finish with 2,077 yards, the second-highest single-season total in NFL history behind Eric Dickerson’s 2,105 in 1984.

We discussed the possibility of Peterson reaching the 2,000-yard mark back in mid-November. At the time, we noted that Peterson would need to average 145.3 yards per game over the final 6 contests. But after thrashing the Bears and Packers for 318 yards over the past 2 weeks, Peterson can average 138.5 yards per contest and still reach 2,000 yards.

Will he do it? I will never bet against him, so I’m saying yes. What do you think? Let us know by leaving your thoughts in the comments section below this entry.

Absolutely, the big difference is none of the other players who did it had knee surgery the previous year. Amazing.

I think that he will get it as well. IDK about the rushing record, he would pretty much have to put up 200+ a game for the rest of the season… can be done I guess…. but I say forsure he hits 2,000

  4. By vikingbob136 on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

I would rather he rush for 1400 the whole year and we have 2 or 3 more wins and be in playoff contention. It’s a team game.

    1. Adrian is the man. He will not be denied.
    2. With Ponder, however, the coach and/or management is in denial.
    3. To insist on something (or someone) is pseudopride, in case 2 above.
    4. The first step in any improvement involves an act of humility. That is, if it is a bust, try something else.
    5. My opinion may not matter to Vikes’ coach/management, but in my learning experience, if I have a problem, I get help. It works.
    6. Congratulations Adrian and to your teammates who help you.

That would be amazing if he broke the record. I would be the happiest person on the planet if he broke his single game record against the bears. Like 24 carries for 316 yards. But seriously, he deserves to join the 2,000 club. More so than Chris Johnson. That was basically a fluke.

Frazier should have gone out this week and found at least “one” WR to replace one of many who are not doing anything to help this team…

It doesn’t have to be a tall and lanky guy…Just a fast & short speedster would be just fine…Harvin and Wright are working out okay…

There are some WR’s that fit the bill sitting on practice squads out there…

Vikings have to quit looking for these tall WR’s with speed…That can’t catch the ball !!!…Or run solid routes…

Burton hasn’t caught a pass in 3 weeks…Has Burton even caught a pass this season ???…Aroma has caught one pass in 3 weeks…

    Why doesn’t Frazier make a change ???…

Frazier said…”Ponder has to hit the WR’s as soon as they come out of their breaks…Its not very often WR’s run open in the NFL at this level”…
    B U L L !!!…

They run free all the time !!!…Just not on this team…

Get Harvin and Wright (maybe even Summers) on the field with Rudolf…All at the same time…Then lets see if Ponder struggles like he has the past few weeks ???…

if the geniuses that comprise the Vikings coaching staff had not abandoned him in a number of games this season: it wouldn’t surprise me if he reached it already. honorable mention goes to the inept #7, and his receiving corp. lastly, if AP says he will do something…who would doubt him…the man is flat out unreal…All Day Baby…GO VIKES!!!

I think we should take a look at kirk cousins. The guy is a winner. He has good size. Skins would definitely be willing to part with him since they have RG3 (many people wonder why they would draft 2 QBs last year)

I would like to see him break his record as well. Here is a list of the top five rushing records of all time…

    1. Eric D., (1984) 2,105 yrds in a season

    2. Jamal Lewis (2003) 2,066 yrds in a season

    3. Barry Sanders (1997) 2,053 yrds in a season

    4. Terrell Davis (2008) 2,008 yrds in a season

OJ Simpson (1973) 2,003 yrds in a season. (first person to ever hit 2,000 in a season)

I would really love for him to break the single season rushing record… Its only right that he does at some point in his career. He already owns the most in a game, lets just follow that up with most in a year.. IF anyone is going to break it, It is going to be AP

AP will come up big this Sunday…

The Vikings defense doesn’t play well on grass…But they can play big games on turf at home !!…I expect BIG things from our defense this Sunday…

Predict 4 sack minimum from our defense…We didn’t get any pressure on Cutler in round one…I expect that to change in round 2 !!!…

Ponder was horrible last week !!…And feels terrible letting down the team…Especially AP…I expect a MUCH better effort from Ponder at home…Please let Harvin be healthy enough to play ???….

    GO VIKINGS !!!…

Ponder feels terrible huh??? I guess it is a feeling he should probably get used to until they bench him. Yet the Vikings are playing the Bears this weekend for a chance to win the division…And fans want to fire the head coach and starting QB ???…

    I can understand asking to fire WR’s that can’t catch a cold…Let alone a pass…

Prediction: Ponder throws idiotic pass across his body that leads to interception. Then in presser says “that’s the number one rule to not throw across your body”. Frazier then says “we’ll have to look at the tape” and also points that “We’ll be sticking with Ponder”

otk. What are smoking. We should be four and 0 in the division or at least 3-1. Why do you throw the ball immediately after peterson has put you in great field position not once but twice. i wish peterson would have kept going on the second long run for a td. the defense would have closed the game out. A field goal would have been better than an int. POnder talking about he is going to talk to farve after the season. that is the problem. Be yourself not farve. cause although he took us to the championship. he also put the nail in the coffin by breaking the rule of not throwing across your body. and throwing an int. Ponder needs to get with the wrs. they may not be good. But what i saw sunday is ponder staring down receivers. why didn’t he just run instead of throwing. that is why i would have had webb in the game. we could have beaten the bears. and definitely the pack while they were hurt. because when the pack gets healthy its over.

If the Vikings want to win A GAME, ANOTHER GAME THIS YEAR they will have to find a way to improve the p@ssing game.

Opponents concentrate on the run. They throw 8 and even 9 in the box, and don’t worry about the p@ss at all.

The formula has allowed opponents to win IN THEIR HOME STADIUMS.

On the road the Vikings can win when opponents adopt this strategy because Ponder feels more confident at home.

Jeers, cheers, and criticism never bothered Brett Favre. I always admired him, even when he was with the Packers. For some reason I don’t like Rodgers.

Those of you who listened to Ben Leber (sp) on KFan know that his thoughts are exactly the same as the rest of us.

He was asked if he would start Ponder. First he said no, then he changed his mind quickly, and said “start Ponder, but put him on a short leash.”

Many of us, Jones included, would start JOE.

But otherwise his comments were the same as the rest of us.

IS THE COACHING STAFF RIGHT, AND THE REST OF US ALL WRONG?

  57. By Frederick Jones on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

Why not start JOE, and arrange the game plan around him.

(JoneDogg is worried the Vikings will win this week, and then we will truly be
stuck with a horrible pass game for years to come.)

If we just put Ponder on a short leash, we may not see JOE until the 4th quarter, which may not be enough time for him to craft a miracle (AGAIN).

    @ vikess86

You asked why Ponder didn’t just run the ball instead of pass it accross his body. Well he did, ALL GAME. He didn’t go through his progressions at all, he just looked at the #1 and if it wasn’t there he took off. The pick in the endzone was just a flat out dumb decision.

@ OTK… HAHAHA lol.. I would send the platter back too if it came out green and gold… Ohhhh, man, thats funny.

Opponents stack 8 and 9 in the box and AP still runs for 210. Could you imagine what it would be like if they didn’t??? If we could come up with even a mediocare passing attack we would ahve at least 1 or 2 more wins this season. I personally think, that if we can figure out a way to do that we could possibly…not probably win 3 of the next 4. The Houston game is going to be brutal. Also we have to be careful of where and when we pass this coming weekend as the bears (we all know) have more picks than anyone in the league and more take aways. This game, like the others, is winnable. But if Ponder plays anything like he did on Sunday… were in big trouble!!!!!

    OTK,

I still think we have to have our WRs run some crossing patterns once in a while.
Percy Harvin has done it. But that’s it in the DoggOfJonesEye.

I believe Rudolph may have run one as well. But to get the WRs involved, run a few crossing patterns. Timing routes. Quick, quick, stuff. Boom!

Part time players…Are not evaluated for permanent positions…

Webb playing the 4th quarter means nothing for seeing if he is starting material….Playing Webb in a game at the end of the year…Where both teams have nothing to play for…Means little also…

But if the Vikings are out of it the last game of the season…And the Packers are still trying for the playoffs ???…

Then play Webb…See what he can do in a real game…Practice him all week for his chance…

Expert commentary by the MuskyFever. HairOfTheJones tends to agree with every word.

Perhaps Ponder, and his young receivers are more confident with home cooking. Perhaps they enjoy the cheerleading, and the positivity of the fans.

HairOfTheJones worries about how Ponder will take the early booing he is bound to get. That may be the key to the game for the Vikings.

I too agree with the JonesOfFred…

Ponder is going to get booed at the start of the game. It is up to him to prove to the fans that he can overcome those boo’s and win on Sunday. When, not if, but when he is booed at the start, how he presents himself on the field and on the sideline will determine whether or not he will have a productive game. If he starts to think to hard about the boo’s or dwells on them, he will surely prove to me, everyone on this blog, and the entire fan base correct. And in doing so, he may as well retire right there and then. If he can’t take being booed from a plethera a pee poor performances, then he should never step foot on a football field again.

I too am afraid that we will win and be stuck with the shallow Pond for this year and the following… Though there is not a great draft class for QBs this year, and outside of Alex Smith I don’t think any of the Free agent QBs are very talented either. We may be stuck with him anyway for this year and the next. Hopfully, he does the same ole’ Ponder and stinks to high heaven, then maybe, just maybe, we will draft a QB for the 2014 season

  75. By Muskyfever on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

@ OTK… It’s not silly if you want a different QB on the field. Podner could have 0 yards, AP could run for 150 and Harvin could take two to the house and we win. Because of the win, Ponder would be praised by the coaches for managing the game. If that happens we could see more and more of Ponder… And in this Bloggers opinion, that is a BAD thing.

If you want Webb to start at all this season, Ponder has to have a bad game. If we win (even if Ponders play was sub par) he will be praised and we will be back at stage one

  76. By OTKalil2012 on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

Fraziers game plan is to run the ball with AP first…AP to get 100+ yards and a TD…

For Ponder to get 150 yards in the passing game with 1 TD…
    With NO mistakes…0 ints…

And for the defense to hold small leads and win…

    Did I miss anything ???…

So a 17-13 win…With Ponder getting a 100 yards and AP getting 175 on the ground…Would make Frazier unbelievably happy !!!…

Because that is what Frazier game plans each week…: /

Freddy- I feel the coaches were wrong.
I would have kept Sage as the backup to Ponder. Even Favre admits Sage helped him.

Sage as a backup to Ponder… Sage and Ponder both out played Webb in the preseason.

I am a big Joe Webb Fan… I think he would develop into a good QB, but I really think he make be an even better WR.

Spielman and Frazier missed the boat. Sage would have been worth the money to help develop Ponder. Webb’s big play ability was much needed at the WR position after Child’s got hurt.

    @OTK,

Jones is sure you are right about the 17-13 win. Coach Frazier, like all coaches, will take the W any way he can get it.

But as MuskyFever has stated, we must have a p@ssing game.

Even the Vikings of 1969 had some p@assing. There seemed to always be the threat of a long p@ass to Gene Washington or John Henderson.

Well you may be right about Sage, but it’s too late now.

The future at QB for the Vikings (currently) is Joe Webb and C.Ponder.

Why not give Joe Webb a real shot at the position?
Joe doesn’t have the vocabulary that is common among NFL QBs. That does not mean that he is not smart. It probably is more of an indicator of poverty.

JOE may be the next Chicano Joe Kapp. Call him Birmingham Bull JOE!!!

AND if we are going to go with the running game why not have one of the best running quarterbacks in the history of the game at the position???

They have tried to use Webb at wide out. Its little nuances of that position that he can’t grasp. Route running, when to brake, how to shake the corner, stop and go, back shoulder… the list goes on. not only that, but his hands aren’t very good either. Sure he can catch, but so can I… Does that mean I should play wide out for the Vikings??? I think not, Though I love football. I either played Free saftey or QB growing up… But It’s the little things that have kept Joe out of the lineup for the WR position.

All the talk about next years drafting for a possioble QB. Holy Cow!

We have Joe Webb. Start him the last games. If he will be as good as I think he will be, we won’t have to be looking in the window with our nose pressed againt the window.

Joe has this habit of making a game very exciting. Yes he takes off sometimes, but so does Pond. At least Webb can run it in, where Ponder just slides on his butt for a 1 yard gain.

The object of the game is to WIN, and have a exciting time doing it. Play Webb!

    @Muskyfever,

JOE can do many things well. He is the best athlete on the team, and he rides the pines. It doesn’t make any sense.

But they want to avoid a QB controversy. It MAY NOT BE because they don’t trust him, it may be more because they know he would do well enough that the fans would really have something to complain about.

Then he would lose his job.

You have to be confident of your decisions as a head coach in the NFL…which stands for…

Mark Sanchez was a much better QB with a veteran like Mark Brunell as his backup than with Tebow as his backup.

You are correct that it is too late with Sage… but it frustrates me that the organization got cheap when it came to Ponder’s development.

It also frustrates me that the Vikings were in the perfect postion to get creative with Joe Webb to see what kind of a playmaker he could be at WR, and they didn’t take full advantage of it.

They have improved and exceeded NFL experts predictions. I will support the coaches decision.

    Jones honors your position.

The BATTLE right now is whether the 99% that want Ponder benched for Webb is right or is the Vikings coaching staff, and the 1% that agrees with them right.

Yet Jones fears that they will beat the bears, and we will drink too much beer the rest of the season watching our 100 yards per game p@assing attack the rest of the way.

(The Vikings will probably win the home games and finish 8-8, Ponder’s passer rating on the road will be less than 60)

UNLESS JOE IS ALLOWED TO INTERVENE.

Again I say I like Webb, However I don’t think he should be put in at QB. I don”t want Ponder in there either so I am in a pickle. I would like to see MBT. But that will never happen. I guess we just have to s.u.c.k it up and hope for the best with the Pond.

I don’t think Joe is a good fit on this team. I think we should trade him to someone that would actually use his skills. but sitting on the bench on our team is just wasting space. he has good athletisism, but I just don’t think he has a spot on the vikings anymore.

I don’t think Webb is a good QB or a WR. I think he has talent, and is athletic. but that is as far as my opinion goes.

Do you agree with never using cros sing routes?

Do you agree with starting Robison over E. Griffen?

    Do you agree with not using Gerhart, S h e r e l s, and Ballard?

Do you think it’s okay to only get three b a l ls to your WRs?

Do you think it’s okay to use A.D. in the first half, but not the second half?

Maybe we should start C. Kluwe at the QB, have Peterson next to him in shotgun formation. Kluwe could quick kick on third downs if we aren’t doing so hot.

The game of football has “many” reasons a team might win late in the year ???..

One of the games of the 9-7 wins I predicted the Vikings to have this season…Was against the Packers or Texans late in the year…The main reason being…I expected one of those teams to have their division locked up for the season…Being playoff bound already…And having the Vikings maybe playing a team resting their star players for the playoffs ???…

Making this game Bears game HUGE !!!…Who do you think the Packers would want to face in the playoffs ???…If they had there choice winning the final game of the season ??…Bears or Vikings ???…

And will the Texans be resting players already with 2 weeks left…And their play off seed locked up ???…At least there players with minor injury ???…

There is a reason this “delusional” Viking fan thinks the Vikings will win 3 of there last 4 games…

Just ask Jerad Allen if he could go back 2 last year, and some how eak out 1-2 morw sacks. Because he will never have anouther year like that year. The same goes for AP. This is a once in a lifetime chance. The only one 2 stop him is coaching staff. ( DONT DO IT MUSGRAVE) Put AP in record book were he belongs…!!!

The only reason I can see that Frazier is not letting Webb start, is that he knows that when Webb comes in and shows up Ponder and wins us games everyone will ask why did we draft Ponder? Why didn’t we let Webb develop 2 years ago and give him a 2 year leash to make tons of dumb mistakes when he is already way better than Ponder? He thinks this will get him fired.

Well guess what Frazier, you are probably already out of a job with your terrible mismanagement of this team and terrible QB decision.

  118. By Muskyfever on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

    @ ThejonsingFred…

No all those things you listed are all things I do not agree with. However. I don’t think Ponder nor Webb give a us a good chance to win. What I do know. Is that Webb is never going to be our starter… He will either be a back up or a third string if they make Ponder the back up. All of those things you listed are bad, we should use cros sing routes, we should always have Harvin and AP in on EVERY down. We should utalize Gerhart, we should try and get the rock to the Wide outs and so forth.

But Webb is not going to make any of those situations any better then Ponder is. Thats why it is not going to matter. I would rather not have Ponder in. I will take Webb at this point… NOT because I think he will do better, but maybe because the team needs a little different sumthin sumthin. But like I said IF Webb plays it will be because Ponder is ahving a terrible game… OR Ponder got hurt.

Unfortenatly I think we are stuck with the shallow Pond… a fact I am not to happy about, but we just don’t really have any other options

  119. By Muskyfever on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

“Not only that, but what if we did and Joe got hurt. Then two plays later Ponder got hurt. I guess we would then see MBT, but it would ruin any chance of Webb getting a shot at QB”

Here is what I meant. You said that we should use Webb in a different way outside of QB correct? Ok, well lets say that we do that. Webb is running down the sideline and Urlacher smokes him and he tears his ACL. (not likley but could happen) OK, so now we don’t have a good back up. Now we put The Pond back in and two plays later he gets hurt. Now we are down to MBT. Which is fine, he just has 0 expeirence.

So instead of getting what you wanted and having Webb start at QB because Ponder got hurt. We got selfish and threw Webb in there at Wide out or RB or whatever. Now he is hurt too. And we will not have a back up QB capable of anything that we know of yet.

    Understand??

    Dear Coach Frazier,
Benching someone is part of the learning experience. But you actually gave a plausible reason for change in quarterback and that is, TEAM FIRST. Ponder has become a distraction. Coach, as a non-expert, I tell you that Christian needs a lot of help. He needs guidance and mentoring. Baptism by fire and trial and error quarterback experiment are not the way to go. Good luck in the next 4 games, that is, if winning is still part of the plan. And to Adrian, your awesome!

I mean we’ve heard media speculation of Norv Turner, Andy Reid, Rex Ryan, ect. getting fired but there has been zero talk of Frazier at this point in the season that I’ve seen.

If the team gets one more win this season it shows progress over the last two seasons and as long as progress is shown I don’t see Frazier losing his job.

I thought he played pretty well. He is 25 years old now, only 1 year older than Ponder. Give the guy a chance. IF YOU CAN SAY WEBB CANT PLAY WATCHING 3 GAMES THEN WHAT DO WE THINK OF PONDERS PLAY AFTER 23 STARTS?? …I THINK IT MIGHT BE PONDER THAT CANT PLAY..??…NO ONE CAN SAY WEBB CANT PLAY BECAUSE NO ONE HAS SEEN ENOUGH TO NO IF HE CAN!!!

Ha exactly JE, love the hypocrites

  177. By Muskyfever on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

Really JE. THis is the same argument you have everytime we talk about Webb..

Personally I don’t think either are a fit for our team. Ponder… well I shouldn’t even have to say what I don’t like about him.

But Webb. Though he can run. His pass mechanics are terrible, he looks to run to often, he has a strong arm yes, but accuracy…uhh… not so much. He is a physically gifted athlete. But there is not any room to try and develop Webb + Ponder. Webb is a glorified back-up. But that is all he will ever be on the vikings team. If he goes somewhere else I guess we will find out.

But if you are going to keep bringing this up, give us some better arguments that support your opinion… not just your opinion. Saying that no one knows because of three games is not a valid argument. I made a decsion on Ponder after 3 games and my opinion is still valid… Whats your point?

  178. By Muskyfever on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

Also webb had a pee poor pre season… It was pretty evident that he was not going through reads, dropping his eyes and running. When the coaches said something to him about it.. He went through his reads and threw the ball at the feet of almost every receiver he threw too.

I’m not saying he can’t improve over time, but time is a luxery that the vikings don’t have

  183. By OTKalil2012 on Dec 4, 2012 | Reply

What goes on behind closed “front office” doors ???…

OTKalils theory since Frazier took over…

Frazier is what killed the “triangle of authority” just as much as Childress…(Is Zygi still paying out some money on Childress’s contract ?)…

After the 2010 draft…Spielman wanted to start Ponder that season…Frazier got cold feet on that idea…After listening to media and sports analysts…Saying the thing to do is bring in a veteran to “mentor” Ponder…Thus McNabb enters…Frazier’s idea…Berrian promises during several “fire side chats” with Frazier he will get better…Spielman wanted to get rid of Berrian…Frazier keeps both bozo’s long past there welcome…After both get released…Spielman becomes GM of personal…Interesting…

I think Spielman wanted Ponder,Sage, and MBT to be the Vikings QB’s this season…I think Frazier wanted Webb…So Spielman not wanting to cause waves…Released Sage keeping Webb…And MBT…MBT has very good mechanics and a cannon for an arm…And Frazier I again think fought for some very poor WR’s to keep this season in Jenkins,Aroma, and Burton…

So my guess…Is Spielman might get rid of Frazier after this season…He just isn’t making good decisions with personal…And not make changes either…Unless the media forces him too…Frazier is just as much a “waffler” as Clueless was…Maybe even more so…imo…

We have a ways to go and like Coach Frazier said the team as a whole is not playing well enough on the road. I don’t disagree that if Ponder colapses during a game you don’t replace him, But you start him every game till the end of the season. Ponder does not have the arm talent to be in the NFL. That is a fact.

I don’t blame ponder for not taking a chance on throwing a ball up for a receiver to make a play on because they wont and it will probably get picked off and have everyone criticizing him and musgraves play calling is affecting his play also and ponder takes a lot of heat for it. also Ponder doesn’t have a noodle arm because i have seen him throw a ball 60 yards and barely stepped into it but that’s besides the point here

Parkway we all saw the game, but some of us aren’t ready to throw Ponder under the bus over it. We aren’t making appologies, but understand Ponder is a work in progress and we should give him every benefit to try and become what Fraizer and Spielman hired him to be. But you can continue to run him down and everything else as that is your right. WE want to see how it goes.

That’s up for debate there are enough problems across the team to bring doubt that we wouldn’t do any better than we have already done. You have one game so far that Ponder is directly at fault for losing, that’s it. Lots of mistakes by a lot of players have accounted for the other loses. Including turn overs by AP. So no one is without fault on the losses.

Tom Brady Positives: Good height to see the field. Very poised and composed. Smart and alert. Can read coverages. Good accuracy and touch. Produces in big spots and in big games. Has some Brian Griese in him and is a gamer. Generally plays within himself. Team leader.

Negatives: Poor build. Very skinny and narrow. Ended the ’99 season weighing 195 pounds and still looks like a rail at 211. Looks a little frail and lacks great physical stature and strength. Can get pushed down more easily than you’d like. Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush. Lacks a really strong arm. Can’t drive the ball down the field and does not throw a really tight spiral. System-type player who can get exposed if he must ad-lib and do things on his own.

    @Shawn,

Is this a scouting report from college? All the more reason why Joe Webb can become a great player!!!

Summary: Is not what you’re looking for in terms of physical stature, strength, arm strength and mobility, but he has the intangibles and production and showed great Griese-like improvement as a senior. Could make it in the right system but will not be for everyone.

    @Parkway

Right on, I have been saying that all season that he cannot read defenses, it was really evident in the game Sunday by watching his eyes. He never looks off the defensive backs and stares down his receivers and never checks down to another one, and he has happy feet. Man, he should get all the tape he can on Peyton Manning, nuff said!!!!!!!!!!

There’s a lot more stories out there about players who started out with questionable success.

Johnny Unitas (Who many still regard as the greatest QB of all time) was drafted in the 9th round out of Louisville. Walt Kiesling cut Unitas thinking somehow that John was not smart enough to make it in the NFL. This was ironic because Unitas became one of the best on field leaders in NFL history.

So those of U who think JOE WEBB can’t make it…guess again.

Jones will repeat himself…AT THE RISK OF BEING RUDE…Joe Webb has the abilities to be one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game. If only someone would give him the chance!

The Vikings are doing a TERRIBLE job teaching Ponder play action fakes…

RG3 with the Redskins right now is a great example of what I am talking about…Slow the rush down and confuse the defense more…By doing a better job “faking” the hand off…To the best RB in football….

Manning was one of the best also in his younger days with the Colts…Selling the play fake to the RB on the stretch play…Then spinning out the other way…And taking shots down the field…

The extended stretch fooled many a defense into the run play….But also gave receivers time to get separation and finish deeper routes down field…

Coaching…Many of the problems the Vikings have is coaching…

Went to the packers vikings game in green bay and witnessed Peterson run his 82 yard touchdown live. This is one of the best things I have ever watched. He is the best running back to ever play and don’t count him out for a stellar finish to his great season.

  433. By Vlad19 on Dec 5, 2012 | Reply

    Not so fast OTK,

The problem with play-action, and WHY it doesn’t work for us is Ponder’s inability to stretch the field. Defenses play 8-9 in box, safeties play one high and NOT deep, EVERYBODY is virtually within 5-7 yards of line of scrimmage. safety single high at maybe 10!

Play action is designed to pull secondary and LB up on hard charge (coming from deeper standard drops), but because the defenses are only 6 yards off the ball, there is no real effect of play-action because they are not forced to bust down, and IF they are fooled, their recovery is not a huge or drastic shift of forward to backward recovery.

It is simple, they virtually don;t MOVE because they are already within that range of run reaction… AND they are within “Ponder’s strength” of short throws and bubble screens.

One defense covers both aspects of our offense. There is NO over reaction and over corrections necessary that are hallmarks of good deeks in play-action.

Again, blame whomever you want, but the defense covers Ponder as they do because either we don’t scheme well, OR Ponder cant play well enough. And Mushgravy gameplans for his personnel…. Ponder being the instrument of our offense other than AP…. and we know AP works well.

    There it is

  434. By charles on Dec 5, 2012 | Reply

let ap have the ball and get out of his way. the man is a beast. dont deny him the opportunity to surpass 2000 yds. but knowing musgrave and frazier they will put the ball in ponders hands and miss out on history. ponder should be released and both frazier and musgrave should be fired. the wilfs then should try and woo john gruden out of retirement to be the head coach.

charles, old chap, I like your suggestions. However, nothing good ever happens.

  436. By Vikings1 on Dec 5, 2012 | Reply

    @Vlad and OTK

Both of you guys have valid points, however, Coaching can only go so far but in my opinion the key word or outcome of coarching especially good coaching is execution. You can have the best coaching in the game but poor execution will over-shadow it. My question is what is Ponder doing to get better, if I was him I would do whatever is necessary to be the best QB in the league. Study Brady and Peyton Manning and see what they are doing. To be the best you have to study and imitate and do what they are doing and we all know that you cannot keep doing the same old thing and expect a different outcome!

  437. By Vlad19 on Dec 5, 2012 | Reply

Vikings1, my point exactly – Ponder cannot execute due to the simplistic offense he must run due to his deficiencies…. a 10 yard field… how hard is it to cover space when you know it is only 10 yards deep, and there are 11 players spread across that 10 yard swatch of real estate, and Ponder is trying to squeeze things in…
He doesn’t pose enough passing threat that play-action would be at all effective as there is not deep enough drop on D-backs and LBers to get the play-action to effect a result.

Defenses float on us and we throw AND run into the same coverages. Imagine that, we are a defensive coordinator’s dream to scheme against!

    Ponder.
