1st-Down Run Defense The Key To Containing Packers Passing Attack

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 30, 2012 – 8:45 am

Containing Aaron Rodgers and the passing game is likely Task #1 for defenses when they prepare to face the Green Bay Packers. That’s the task at hand for the Vikings this week, as they are nearly set to make their annual visit to Lambeau Field to renew their rivalry with the Packers.

To do that, though, the key may actually be to perform better against the run. No, Green Bay does not typically unleash a pounding ground game against the adversary. But a deeper analysis of their offensive performance this year could lead one to conclude that their ability to run the ball on 1st down leads to more production from their passing game and success on the NFL’s most important down – 3rd down.

The Packers possess one of the NFL’s top passing attacks when they’re hitting on all cylinders, but they actually run more (52%) than they pass on 1st down. And they are fairly efficient at doing so. Green Bay averages 4.1 yards per carry on 1st down, which ranks just 21st. But because their passing offense can be so lethal, that per carry average leads to favorable conditions on 3rd down. The Packers are in 3rd-and-5 or less on 43.4% of their 3rd downs. Consequently, Green Bay ranks 8th in the NFL with a 42.1% 3rd-down conversion rate.

That’s a lot to digest, but the bottom line is Green Bay can be an efficient running team (on 1st down) and it’s part of the reason the passing attack is so successful. And here’s the good news: the Vikings rank 2nd in the NFL in 1st-down rushing defense, surrendering an average of just 3.56 yards per rush. Leslie Frazier’s defense will need similar or better production in this area on Sunday if they are to hold off an explosive Packers passing attack.

Coming off last week’s loss in Chicago where the Vikings gave up a 1st down on 57.8% of 3rd downs, everyone will be watching to see if the Vikings defense improves in that area. A great way to begin improving the 3rd-down defense is to stop the run on 1st down.

    Titus…

I saw where you thought maybe MBT could give Ponder a hand at QB if he struggles…

Last Sunday Simpson couldn’t handle Ponders speed on his pass attempts…Going right through his hands and hitting Simpsons chest…

If that would have been MBT throwing those pa sses…Simpson would have been out with broken ribs…After the “flame thrower” MBT whipped that ba ll into his chest !!!…

How can you teach receivers to catch the ball in one weeks time ???…

Jenkins,Burton, and Shudo are a joke !!!…And my bet is Harvin is out again…

But if we lose…It will be all Ponders fault….No if,and, or buts about it !!!…

    @Melvin

I hope the Vikings do sign both or at least one if them they would be instant upgrades. I’m tired of seeing our linebackers get ran over every week or get caught out of position.

MBT has a strong arm with pocket poise, I hope gets an opportunity in this league.

Give Simpson a break I’ve seen him make those catches before. Burton is the guy I don’t wanna see out their I remember his rookie season he dropped every pass in practice I thought he would get cut.
Jenkins should get replaced by Shudu at least he can get open I don’t know what our coaches are seeing out if Burton and Jenkins to leave them on the roster, we need to give Summers a chance he’s 6″5 runs a 4.5 and attacks the ball at its highest point.

I bet this is (outspoken) Kluwe’s last year wearing a purple jersey…

Jenkins,Aromashudo, and Burton might not even see the end of this season yet ???…Let alone come back nest year….

I doubt Henderson comes back at LB…Brinkley might be back..But will have to fight for a job…

What changes will be made along the offensive and defensive lines ???…

And finally…Will a change be made at head coach ???…And whatever else that might change…

I completely agree Brinkley and Henderson have done nothing if anything special they would not be starting on any other team in my opinion our secondary has improved but we get beat underneath where our linebackers should be if not curry at least McClain can hold our middle down no player is good in Oakland

Vikings coachs are not good judges of talent. If i was the coach here would be my WR’s Harvin, Wright, Simpson, Summers, Aromashadu. Jenkins and Burton out. Next year Harvin, Wright, Patterson, Summers and hopefully Childs.

  21. By realviking on Nov 30, 2012 | Reply

I hope Carlson is the first to get cut what a waste of money.

Jenkins, Burton, Shudu, Henderson, Brinkley, Guion, C. Johnson, should also be sent packing to. I don’t even think i would consider bringing Jefferson back either lets see what Bobby Felder can do.

Bring back Simpson only if we have no plans in drafting or signing someone better. I hope Childs get healthy soon he has potential.

  22. By Carl on Nov 30, 2012 | Reply

Musgrave is to much of a bland play caller. If i was calling the plays especially in this game i would throw something at Green Bay that we have not put on tape so far. I would use the two tightends but maybe flank Carlson out wide and give the packers something to think about. What do the rest of you think of this idea?

  23. By realviking on Nov 30, 2012 | Reply

We have linebackers that can’t even play zone coverage they never notice it when a player is crossing behind them. Greenway is ok but he’s not a difference maker we need a player who brings attitude to our defense someone who gets everyone fired up.

I like Harrison Smith he has the attitude that I’m looking for he lets receivers know that if they come around him he’s hitting them. We need the same thing in our linebackers group that would make our defense so much better.

  24. By Ponder aka 3 and out on Nov 30, 2012 | Reply

i think a flea flicker would work since we run the ball all the time. with someone other than Ponder throwing the ball

Musgrave is a bad play caller look at the falcons their offense is gr8 now that musgrave isn’t off cord and the wr issue I agree with some of it Jenkins is a possession receiver he is not a burner Carlson can jus go I rather Ellison Rudolph and Reisner our receivers next yr should be harvin wright and we should draft 2 recv best available in first rnd and maybe a 3rd if da’rick Rogers or Cordell Patterson or even Patton from Louisiana tech would really love Keenan Allen but vikes won’t move up to get him

  27. By Rudso on Nov 30, 2012 | Reply

realviking, I know Henderson and Brinkley are average linebackers but you don’t know s h i t if you think Greenway is just “OK”. Leading the LEAGUE in tackles, 2 sacks, interception, he is an automatic Pro-Bowl player if players like Aldon Smith, Von Miller and Clay Mathews are labeled as DE instead of OLB.

    @Rudso

I said Greenway is ok meaning I’m ok with him our their. Leads the league in tackle I would expect that when my defense is out their more then any other defense, we all saw what Allen did last year by being on the field so much. I stand by my word Greenway is not a game changer he is not a difference maker on our defense. If you think different then you must be blind, by the way you can always bring up a game that he dominated.

Romo has always had great stats but what has that got his offense. MJD led the league in rushing last year but how good was the Jaguars offense, London Fletcher led the league in tackles last season to. I’m not saying Greenway isn’t good all I’m saying is he’s not a difference maker on the field. I just wasn’t a player who plays hard nose football by his side someone who makes splash plays.

I heard probably the best insight on TNF kickoff last night in which one of the analysts was urging management to not fire their coaches midseason. The reason for this was that their perception would be skewed if suddenly the team won a few games with the interim coach and they decide to hire this coach long term instead of waiting to weigh all of their options at head coach.

This is exactly what we did wrong. Frazier is not head coach material.

  35. By Melvin on Nov 30, 2012 | Reply

That draft is no good hunter nor Rogers will be in the third rnd we can get guards in later rnds or free agency we need playmakers in the top 3 picks

  36. By realviking on Nov 30, 2012 | Reply

Our team lacks on field leaders, we don’t have no one on offense who will straightening out teammates for not giving it their all and the same goes for defense we don’t have field leaders.

Our guys are just to quiet sometimes it seem like they only play for individual stats. The mentality is as long as I’m doing my job I don’t have to worry about anything else, and that’s not true because you could be doing your job right and someone else choose to slack on their assignment.

We need players to step up and be leaders. Remember when Favre was here the whole team played at another level because that’s what he expected from them, he made guys believe they can make the plays that they thought weren’t possible.

Your right we really do need some weapons more then spending more to picks on the line. Every team in our division have weapons, not a great line and all we do is get other teams garbage expecting them to be good.

Having more weapons could make an impact on your team its not always about having a great line. If we can get some receivers who scares defenses that would force them to respect the pass and just rush four making things easier for our line.

Vikings coaches should know that because that’s their game plan against the bears, lions, and packers. Were so afraid of the weapons they have that we drop everyone back in coverage and rush four. If we had weapons we could have one of the best teams in the NFL DC’s would have to pick their poison either try stopping AP and let our other weapons kill them or choose the other and AP wool kill them.

I am not even going to start talking about next years draft…We still have this years season to focus on. People need to quit speculating about the draft because most likely any of your picks are going to be obsolete. It will all depend on how we finish. I am just trying to get my arms around this weeks game against the whackers. Our defense needs to get to Rodgers early and often. Our O-line must give Ponder time to work the plays. (going to call him “Uncle Rico” from here on out if we lose) Our receivers need to be quick and no more drops! I think our secondary is going to do well this next game. If Jennings is back, then all they need to do is pop him once as a wake-up call and then they will have his number…I hope that Frazier shows a little enthusiasm this game and that Musgrave can spruce it up a bit so that we can pull this off as it would make my whole season to know we went into Lambeau and silenced the whackers…I think it is going to be a good game. If we win, Dr. Peppers are on me…

Lets get some other wide receivers, outside of Harvin and Wright…That have some “intestinal fortitude” !!!…Instead of a yellow streak running down their backs !!!…

@Titus- I think you take on Kluwe is right on. I like the guy and he has been good in the past, but he has had some lousy games this year and in my opinion is a media hog and distraction. He needs to focus on the job and not his twitter page. Seriously- My wife can kick a football under pressure with a 4 second hang-time that goes more than 23 yards…He better pull out of his funk and kick 50+ or 5-yard line side-line kicks the rest of the year or the Vikes will difinitely be shopping.

They are good at passing but can’t rush the ball kinda reminds me of the lions we know what their going to do we just have to stop it.
On defense they’re good with the pass rush but can’t stop the run or the pass reminds me of the lions.
If everyone shows up to play I think we beat those guys by 7 or more but if we don’t show up we lose by 14 or more.

I think he would fit in with Harvin and Adrian nicely. He does great when Gore is doing well… so having AP i think Smith would do much better then ponder. He would also be able to use simpson better as well in my opinion. Then draft maybe another CB to replace winfield and then focus on Oline and some depth at WR.

But id like to see what that blanton can do. when he filled in for H smith that game he did very good. I say nect season cut raymond and plug in Blanton.

So yet another week without our best Reciever..WONDERFUL!!!!!!!! I always like when things work out the exact opposite of how I want them too.

I don’t blame AD for sleepiong through his alram, I do that almost everyday. Thats why I have 4 of them set around my room, but it’s ok cause I don’t really sleep anyway. It’s when I do fall asleep that I just wont wake up right away, I sleep like I’m dead. Unresponsive….

    But enough about me…

So with no Harvin, they will be doubling Rudolf the whole game. Ponder is going to be running for his life in this one. I thought that if Harvin was going to play or maybe miraculously still does play, then we had a good chance to get the W. I am less optomistic now. Harvin’s absence last week was glaring. We obviously didn’t pose any sort of threat to the bears D. I see the Fudge Packers looking at us the same way this Sunday. Which may be a good thing if we had an OC that knew how to use that to his advantage.. but C’mon, were talking about Musgrave here. He wouldn’t know to pass if they took all their D-backs off the field and only lined up with 300lb pass rushers. This worries me…

I’m sorry, I’m not even going to lie to myself about this one. I would not care if the vikings lost every single game throughout a season EXCEPT when we play the Stupid Pukervillans. However I have no faith in our OC, I have no faith in our QB. I DO have FAITH in AD, Harvin, Rudolf and J. Wright. I also have faith in our D. They are a good squad when they play hard and with heart!.

The packers are missing a bunch of their starters too. Woodsen, Matthews, Bulaga, Jennings all ruled out for this weeks game. Also their missing another OT just can’t reme, ber who, plus CJ. Wilson. but we are without Harvin.

Which team will play better under adversity????? I guess we will find out on Sunday

Spencer, your just mad at something you don’t understand… It’s ok. that specific group of people expects the general public to join them and understand what they are going through without thinking that maybe it’s hard for some to accept. I agree with you that there is an extra agenda. However, I don’t agree with you at all that it is immoral behavior…. I am not sure what your argument would be for that, but if it has anything to do with the good book. I will assume that you are not comprehending it correctly… which is fine. I don’t think that you are wrong for feeling the way you feel,. But it’s not ok to judge someone and say that their behavior (regardless of whom or why) is immoral. You have no idea what they are thinking, nor do I. But the point is you can’t expect to post something like that and not get backlashes coming your way.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion regarless to what it is, because of that I am not upset or angry. However, make sure you understand your argument and post it in a way that doesn’t make you look predigest. Cause I can assure you, that one did

Sorry guys, but leave any personal thoughs about whats immoral and what’s not out of a football blog. Kluwe can support any diverse group or stick up for who he wants to. The point is that he plays football without letting things interfere with his getting that job done. Seems to me that he has let all of the hype has got into his head a bit and that can effect performance. If he can pull it together and finish strong then he will be fine. It just comes down to playing football and staying focussed. That goes for Ponder too. He needs to come out and put all of the hype behind him and shut everyone up. (Wouldn’t that be cool?)

  97. By Muskyfever on Nov 30, 2012 | Reply

I would love Ponder to come out and shut some people up… I just find that to be HIGHLY unlikley. If he can sweep the Fudge Packers I will start to back off. But I just don’t feel like that is giong to happen for us… at least this year. Regardless to how great the talent is on both of our teams (Fudge Packers and Vikings) The games are usually pretty close and hard faught with the exception of last year. Where the Pukervillans went out of their way to embarras us at home, when they went for it on EVERY 4th down and converted. I hope we wamp those little Fudge Packing D-Bags!!!! I can’t express how much I hate the green and gold. It’s not even funny what that team does to my brain as I think about it.

When the Vikings are on GreenBbays 20-30 yard line go for it on 4th! Why?

I’ll tell you why. If we don’t make it, that is where they would start their drive.

If we had punted it further back. In Kluwe case, they would start on our 45yd line.

I hate Field Goals! Have some guts Frazier, surprise everybody. Just once!

Troutdaddy, at least for me– on Kluwe– your posting is in full agreement with my view– and Kluwe is not keeping the distraction from his game, nor from the team or even some of his teammates. Musky…

Funny how much I usually agree with you…But the “I have faith in” certain areas of the Vikings team right now…I am way off with right now…

I have faith in Ponder and Musgrave…The right calls were made last week…The throws were made last week…Receivers and AP both, dropped the ball way to many times for the offense to maintain rhythm and balance…

I do not have faith in the defensive front four…Grass fields kill our pass rush…And our O-line…WHY ???…Been that way for years now…

I don’t expect Ponder to do much…Because frankly…He doesn’t have many weapons to work with…AP should have a decent game again…But that is all Frazier ever wants Musgrave to game plan for…

I expect little from the Vikings this Sunday…They are just a terrible team away, and on grass…But still very much hope they win…I HATE CHEESEHEADS !!!…

We will always rely heavy on the run while we have AP. Ponder should be doing much better then he is with a not great great but improved OL.

I think an upgrade at QB could be our missing puzzle piece. Alex is young still and not as much a risk as drafting another qb. Alex also plays in a similar style offence.

Alex Smith would not make any difference he’s no more then a game manager. I would rather see Ponder our their instead of us getting Smith.

Only bright spots on this team is Adrian Peterson, Wright, Winfield, Kalil, and Smith. Question, why do we, that is the Vikings, keep players who have a history of not playing a full year? They may be good when they are on the field but they are of no use while off the field. To me they are a waste of money by the team, the team should cut any player who has a history of none performance and get them self a proven community. We the fans are tired of this waiting for a SB win by a team that has the talent but not the will to win the big game on national TV, the team seems to worry more about how they look rather than winning a game. All this truly leads back to the leadership, and yes that is you coach, so get your head out of you’re a-s-s and look at how the winning teams are beating your opponents for once.

it’s too bad they picked ponder number 12 overall, he would of been still available in the 4th round. what a waste of a high draft pick, not to mention a waste of 2 years

  228. By Muskyfever on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

As it stands right now I am in agreement with 3 and out. A waste of a high draft pick and 2 years. Ponder has now shown us anything this year that tells me he can carry or lead this team the way the need to be lead.

The OC has not shown anything this year that proves to me that he can manage games effectively week in and week out.

Our receivers have not shown that they can catch consistently or even get open enough to catch the ball to keep the drive going. Outside of Percy of course, but he has been out for a while now, and not getting him back this week.

No faith in our D line after last weeks destruction. It seems like their hearts aren’t in it. Well better get em in it, WE NEED THEM!!!!

The Secondary is much improved. Hurts to lose Cook, but Winfield is having a good season. H. Smith was one of our best draft choices Defensivly in a good while.

AD is still the man, still the best in the NFL. And as far as I am concerned back to the good ole AD, running hard, forcing contact and finishing runs. None of this get hit and fall over junk. AP, I mean this…. You were shooting for being better then you were before the injury… I think you accomplished that!!! your a beast!!!!! keep it up.

Hopefully we can win in GB… But, I am not sure its plausable

  231. By Parkway on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

I guess you didn’t understand the implications of the difference between MBT and Ponder. MBT would be slinging it down the field zipping it into tight windows to receivers so it’s possible he could throw picks in doing so, but at least they wouldn’t be the pathetic overthrown picks or the ones where he doesn’t have the arm strength to complete a 5 yard pass or too scared to throw it down the field. Sorry you were incapable of understanding that.

Get a life, this team wasn’t supposed to win to begin with….and they have done pretty good up to now. Whether they win or lose, they have won. They have exceeded expectations. God cannot do whatever He pleases– He gave the planet to people— remember? Under our dominion. And there is evil on the loose. God cannot intervene or He would have lied to humanity at the start– He said the planet is under our rule. This is a brief and quick summary to give some background– it can get much more in-depth, but no, contrary to religious and traditional thought, God cannot do anything– He is bound by His own Words.

    03 and Titus,

The top contender for the light heavyweight championship of the world came to the school I was working at one year. He said you cannot fight angry.

What happens if you get angry is that your nervous system gets out of whack and you can’t move.

The same thing can happen in baseball, volleyball, or even in an argument if you get too angry.

We saw it happen to that fat little offensive guard for the Lions. He got mad during a fight with Jerad Allen. They kept the guard in for a play, but he was done, they had to take him out.

You cannot play football angry. (Jones admits you can for a play…but not for the whole game.)

  277. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

Now that said- not giving this justice, but any local blogger who is curious, I can meet to discuss.
As I said, God gave the planet to men– so in effect (and women, excuse me), God does not have a “legal” right to intervene– only those who enter this planet through the door– and that is why God became a man himself and enter His own creation through a woman— and that is why Jes.us is savior- all man and all God.
He was able to defeat death—- and if you accept His sacrifice, you can then gain access to God as a child of His— and that, is how God intervenes on the planet– through prayer and through the actions of people— so, next time someone suffers, don’t blame God– look in the mirror. We all have a part to play. We can get His help, but not without the bridge– all man and all God. Je.sus is called the last Adam because He restores us back– but not the whole planet– so at this time we are in an imperfect environment.

The passing game is not all Ponder’s fault last week he hit receivers in the numbers. Musgrave’s playcalling puts him in difficult situations because the defense always knows when hes going to throw. Get a new coordinator and Ponder will be a great QB.

    @ccfan80

I’m not down with Musgrave either. He called an OK game agains the 49ers this year, but I think more credit goes to the O-line coach etc for the blocking schemes they applied. The team looks so up-tight on the field. Hardly anyone is playing loose, I think Musgrave has a tendency to “stick with the plan” too often. Ponder will be fine.

Once he said God cannot lie– if he says there is a three headed dog, well a three headed dog will manifest. What he says is true, so just by virtue of Him speaking, He creates reality. Pretty cool.

  288. By jcdogg on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

Ponder has to learn to take chances and play good football. No matter what the OC calls, he ultimately has the options to do what he wants. Not all OC calls that go to Rogers, Cutler, Manning, Brees are what the OC called. You as the QB need to adjust and find the gaps in the defense. That is what takes you from good to great. He will get there once he spends more time in the offense. Musgrave however is useless.

I don’t like placing blame and there is a lot to go around as to why the Vikings passing O isn’t succeeding, but we really really need a group of WR on the Team. Rudolph is great, Harvin is Great and I think Wright could turn out to be good too, but the Childs injury at the beginning of the season really hurt us, I think he could have developed into a bit of a spark for us, and that’s what we need. Just that spark downfield, even 15-20 yards downfield would be enough. Our run-offense has been so impressive this year, if we had just the hint of a 15-20 yd guy on the outside, we’d sustain drives, keep our D rested, and be surprising a lot of people.

  292. By ccfan80 on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

We need a receiver who can actually catch theball outside of Percy. This is the main thing holding Ponder back. When you look at gametape every receiver is covered.

Youre definitely right we need a big receiver to speed Ponder’s development. The Childs injury was terrible he wouldve been a first round pick before the first surgery, if he can come back we might have a chance with him. I like someone like Justin Hunter from Tennessee hes 6’4 which is bigger than anyone outside of Rudolph who is a monster.

  295. By RI VIKE on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

I haven’t looked at any gametape, but Pellisero has nice coverage after game days, and he says the same thing every week. Nobody open downfield, all..game..long.

  296. By Parkway on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

I’m sure he’s referring to Tebow open where there needs to be no one within a 15 yard radius. How many times have you seen ponder throw a sweet back shoulder throw where only his receiver could catch it? Never? Sounds about right.

  297. By RI VIKE on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

    @ccfan80

It’s that trust issue as well I think for Ponder. When any of our wide outs get 1on1, it’s not like he can throw a jump ball or back shoulder. I know the rhythm is still off a bit, but Ponder has had some pretty “sweet spot” long ball drops this season. Definitely potential with the right hands down field.

  298. By ccfan80 on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

    @RI VIKE

We saw how much he trusts Rudolph in the San Fran game where he just thrw to ball up in the endzone and Rudolph came down with it. Simpson is awful, he hasnt been the same since his foot injury and he can’t catch a pass which was one of the main concerns when we got him in the offseason. If we had a guy who could consistently win 1 on 1 Ponder’s confidence would go sky high and our offense would be much better.

Everybody might think i’m crazy but when the vikings are on the board in the first round they should take David Amersen for a CB puting him opposite of Cook with Smith as safety the defensive backfield would be lights out for the next 10 years then pick up DaRick Rodgers in the second round so Ponder has somebody to throw to I know having a star receiver would make a lot of sense to try and draft in the 1st round but Amersen is 6’3” and tied for second in college for INT’s in a season with 13 now nobody throws in his direction the vikings play Calvin Johnson 2 times a year and now the bears receivers are big guys just my thought.
Also musgrave has to go not Frazier the players want to play for Frazier and he may not be on the sideline exploding with emotion but i think he is a good coach. Musgrave really proved he can’t run an offense against the bears when he came out trying to throw the ball every play when his offense is built to pound the rock on the ground. If the vikings run the ball 25 times a game they are tough to beat but no lets abandon the run for no real reason

  401. By Parkway on Dec 1, 2012 | Reply

I think we need to get Keenan Allen or Justin Hunter in the first round, though I do agree we need to add another big CB. I think getting the best available CB/OG/LB/DT in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds will be the way to go.

Ponder has lost this game for the Vikings just like he’s lost several of the others. Why, in the name of common sense, can’t this guy sit on the bench while Frazier and the organization finds a quarterback that is competent. This team is going to fool around, achieve yet another losing season, and then watch while Peterson, Alan, Harvin and a few of the others jump ship and go someplace where their talents will earn them a championship. AP is being expected to carry the whole load while squander Ponder fiddles and fumbles and throws interceptions.
