Packers May Be Without Run-Stopper CJ Wilson vs. Peterson, Vikings

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 29, 2012 – 7:42 am

The Packers have several high-profile players dealing with injuries leading up to this week’s game against the Vikings. LB Clay Matthews is trying to nurse a hamstring injury back to health, DBs Sam Shields and Charles Woodson may not play, TJ Lang has moved from LG to RT to replace the injured Bryan Bulaga, and star WR Greg Jennings is looking to return from a groin injury.

There’s another member of the Green and Gold who may not play this week, and while he doesn’t have as high a profile as the others listed above, he is an important piece of the Packers puzzle. His name is C.J. Wilson, a starting DE for Green Bay who specializes in stopping the run. Wilson was a 7th-round pick out of East Carolina University in 2010. He’s played in every game but two over the last three seasons, and along the way has been a key player in the DL rotation; he’s started 7 of the 10 games he’s played in this season.

Wilson has been all but ruled out by Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy, meaning someone else on Green Bay’s defensive line is going to have to step up on Sunday when the NFL’s best RB comes to town.

“We’re going to miss C.J. He’s a real good run player,” fellow DE Ryan Pickett explained. “I think he gets overlooked. A lot of times he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He can play the run real good.”

And so can the Packers. Known more for an opportunistic and playmaking defense, the Packers are actually very good against the run. They rank 11th in rushing yards allowed (103.8 per game) and 15th in yards per carry allowed (4.1), but they’re tied for 5th-fewest runs of 10+ yards allowed and they’ve allowed just one 100-yard rusher this season.

The absence of Wilson comes at an inopportune time for Green Bay, with Adrian Peterson coming to town on Sunday. Peterson is the NFL’s leading rusher by 172 yards, he has six 100-yard games this season (including 5 straight) and he’s averaging an incredible 5.8 yards per carry. The silver lining for Green Bay is the fact that they’re accustomed to overcoming injuries. If GM Ted Thompson and McCarthy can find a key cog in their run-stuffing defensive line with a 7th-round pick, they can also likely find a way to patchwork something together for this week. The question is, will it be enough?

We’ll find out on Sunday.

How many gadget and trick plays the Packers will use for the 500th time this season already…Against the Vikings…

While the Vikings on the other hand…Have not tried one exciting play…All season long ???…

Base defense and offense…Maybe one shot down the field a game….Might as not try anyway…Because we don’t have a receiver that can catch the b all ???…

But lets not try a different receiver…They might actually get separation and catch the b all…

If McCarthy had players at WR like the Vikings have on their 53 man roster…How long would any of those bozo’s been on the team this season…Jenkins,Shudo, and Burton would have been shown the door a long time ago…

Wake up Les…Or be on the outside looking in, at the head coaching position of the Vikings…Just saying…

There is more that can be done…Than just bringing up Wright from the bench to help at WR…A LOT MORE !!!…

Was listening to KFAN today, Said Harvin was practicing but limping after every route and favoring his other ankle. Also said Harvin was visably upset with his lack of production and ability on the practice field. Not looking good. Hopefully he can come back cause we need him more than ever, but I don’t want him to re-injure it and then be out for the year. I hope that he and the vikes training staff doesn’t ruch him just because he is our best reciever.

  4. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

Oh…Did I forget to add Simpson to that list….Another guy with speed and can jump…But can’t catch the b all ???….

  5. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

    If Harvin isn’t healthy…Harvin needs to sit…

Vikings have way to much invested in Harvin…He might end up injuring himself much worse…If he plays in to much pain…And we all know Harvin…He will want to push his pain level toleration to the limit…To be able to play the Packers…

Maybe Harvin would be playing this week and last week…If he sat after first injuring the ankle…Instead of going back out on the field….And then running a go route ????…

AP is dinged up…But will a super healthy Gerhart see more than one carry this Sunday ???…Most likely not…

There is plenty Frazier allows or does…I do not go along with…

Just wonder how that sits with Spielman ???…

  6. By Muskyfever on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

AP may be banged up, but even a slightly injured AP is still better than a fully healthy Toby.

Peterson will play, and will stomp as he always does. We need him to play. I don’t think a minor shoulder injury will ever keep him out of a game. This is the guy that came back from major surgery and only missed one and a half games doing it. We need him to play, and trust me he will

  7. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

    I know he will play…

Not sure he should be ???…After missing the team bus last week…And dropping 2 fumbles in the game after that…

    I am just saying…Relieve the guy a little…Give Gerhart 6 to 7 carries a game…

Am I asking for AP’s right arm, or something…To sit down a few plays a game…

Maybe a more rested AP gets up when his alarm goes off on Sunday…When its time to play a football game…

One player does not make a team…Frazier needs to learn that also…

so when we start frest next year, with all the players healed like cook, Harvin, ect, what good will it do if they don’t address the qb problem, adrian is one year older, so is Jared Allen, Winfield, the window is closing, stop messing around

  9. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

    Another way I see it…

Why would Gerhart even report to camp next season ???…He could be a starting RB for just about 25 other teams in the league…

Why would Gerhart not demand a trade ???…

Then what happens next season when AP does get injured ???…AP isn’t getting any younger…

Then a great situation at RB like the Vikings have now…Turns into a nightmare…And why ???…

Maybe just because a very good RB is being left to waste away in his prime on the sidelines…Not getting involved at all with his team…And maybe wonders why ???…

    Coaching….

There is no reason Gerhart should not be getting at least 6 or 7 token carries a game….

  10. By Muskyfever on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

To be completely candid with you OTK. I miss the days where AP had 18 fumbles and we were 12 – 4.

One player may not make a team.. But one player can determine any game on any given Sunday. You know that as well as I do

I understand that you should not fumble and I understand that you should not miss the bus. But we are talking about AP. If the coaches made the decision to sit him based on those facts they would get one heck of a back lash from the fans. AP needs to play.

  11. By Muskyfever on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

When we they came down on AP two seasons ago for the fumbles he changed his runn ing style. He did not lose the rock as much, however he was not finishing his runs like he used to. He was not charging through holes like he used to. I think his injury showed him that he can still be the beast he used to be, and that the injury wasd a blessing in disguise Now we have him back to his “origanal form” I hope he stays this way. Sure he may fumble once or twice, but he will also have more explosive plays like he used to have.

    AP…. DON”T CHANGE A THING!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

I know he needs to play…

But the head coach needs to make a stand also at times…To maintain control of his locker room…

We all saw the outburst from Harvin on the sidelines…Before…Getting injured…

I think Harvin should have been sat down after that…You don’t get in your head coaches face…ESPECIALLY in front of 65,000 fanes !!!…

Was Harvins head some place else…When he got injured ???…Should he have even been on the field after confronting Frazier in that manner ???…

    AP missed the team bus…

Should AP have started the first few series on offense in the Bears game ???…

Would AP have fumbled the ball twice later in that game…If some kind of discipline was handed out earlier in the game ???…

At some point fans and players have to know…WHO is running this team…The head coach…Or the players ???…

I know after the past few weeks…I am wondering ???

I like Fraizer but he reminds me of a passive aggressive teenage parent. Not enough passion to assert his dominance in the locker room. that issue with Harvin on the sideline proved to all of us that he may not be fit to run a team. If he can’t control one player how are you going to control 53.

Fraizer is a players coach, meaning Fraizer will defend them to the death even if the players don’t return the favor.

We can’t stipulate on the “what ifs”. We just need to make sure that we are making the correct decisions going forward. Sitting AP would not have been wise. Some other form of punishment is needed. I just don’t think that sitting our best player (unless the reason is a BIG one) is a wise decision. You will get backlash from owners, GMs and fans alike

What about the end of last season…

Webb should have started more games…Many young players should have…

We might know what we have in Joe Webb ???…Not be wondering…

Frazier played games that didn’t matter…Like he was getting ready for the playoffs ???…Leading to AP and Gerhart getting major injuries late in the season…Remember AP came into that game with a sore ankle also…

Late in that season…Young players should have been played to get a look at them…Wins and losses meant little at the point in the season ???…

    But not to Frazier ???…

Ok, so the game plan for Sunday ought to contain 3 vital aspects:

1- Using Peterson in a versitle way
2- Loading the lanes with several receivers
3- Using Rudolph often to catch and rumble (Like Kleinsasser used to do)

If the O-line can protect Ponder, we should see a huge improvement this week. All I can say is that last year I was at Iggy’s watching the GB game when they walloped us and I intend to not have a repeat of that.

I think Audio Cole would be a big plus for our D as well. Why in the heck is he not getting an opportunity? Rotate the kid in for Pete’s sake

Finally- Harvin is a key player for us and everyone obviously wants him in there this week, but if he is still having issues and limping, then it is not worth risking it. The competitive voice inside my head is saying get his fanny out there and suck it up, but the calmer one is saying don’t push it. Also,- I said this before- If Ponder goes 3 and out his first 2 possesions, I say call in MBT who has a cannon arm. Webb is just going to panic and run. (Although the kid can run well!) It is a toss-up at this point…

  24. By Mike B. on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

The reason Webb didn’t start any games last year is that he’s not the long term QB for this team. He is an adequate backup at best. There is no QB problem for the Vikings. They have their QB of the future and that is Ponder. You all might as well accept that or be disappointed.

I like Gerhart but if we give him 6 touches then AP will only be left with 12 since he’s only getting 18 touches.

I think its best that we trade Gerhart so he can get a chance somewhere else because their is no way he’ll get one backing up the best back.

The issue is you have to have p@ss blocking to complete p@sses. With ‘ole in there we aren’t getting the protection for Ponder he needs. Does he over throw WR sometimes yes, but he also delivers them like a lazer and they are dropped. That’s not his fault. He is adjusting to the NFL game. He will need at least the rest of the season to be evaluated.

    @ Mike B

Their is a quarterback problem is just the peoples in this organization don’t wanna put it out so fans won’t see the big mistake they made.

When your running back is rushing for nearly as much yards your quarterback throws for then theirs a problem.

When your running back rush for more then half of the touchdowns your quarterback has thrown for then theirs a problem.

When your can’t beat a team through the air theirs a problem.

the rebuilding process starts at the qb position. not much hope of picking up a qb in free agency, so it has to come from the draft. quit talking about a wr 1st round pick, the qb slot has to be filled 1st

  38. By Muskyfever on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

    @ Mike B.

I totally agree with you that he has the rest of the year to get evaluated, and probably next year too. I am not ruling him out yet, however I am not on his band wagon yet. I started to be, then we played the ARI Cardinals and he had 60 yrds and a pick. Easy to fall off the wagon after that.

It wasn’t even the long throws that he was missing that had me concerned. Its the 5 yrd throws when he has protection, and missing those is what I have an issue with. I just don’t feel like he is scanning the field like he should be. He missed a lot of wide open recievers last week. When I say missed I mean didn’t even see them while they were open. I am sure that a lot of it is coaching as well.

I know that we had some drops last week, but last week is the ONLY week that Podner supporters have been able to use that excuse. I doubt that we are going to see that happen week to week.

are you counting the pass in the end zone where Ponder lobbed the ball and gave the defenders time to make a play on it?

  45. By realviking on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

    Protection problems

Last season most of the pressure was coming from the left side so we went and drafted the best LT. So what’s the problem?

We all was asking for Fusco because he looked better then Herrera out their. We got what we wanted because Fusco starts. So what’s the problem?

Last time I checked Ponder was right handed so his blindside protection is where we invested at. Our right tackle sucks but the fact that Ponder is right handed he should be able to see when a free man is coming.

The line can’t block all day that’s why its called 3 step drop pass, 5 step drop pass. The only time you should be holding it longer is if the line holds the block.

Every quarterback gets sacked but they make adjustments. The truth is Ponder can’t read the blitz which is a disadvantage for the line.

I’ve seen quarterbacks read the blitz and signal the line where its coming from. Ponder doesn’t do any audibles, hold the ball to long, and he doesn’t get some of the blame.

  46. By Ponder aka 3 and out on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

yep, Manning audibles all the time, and his no huddle offense is almost impossible to defend

  47. By Ponder aka 3 and out on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

no excuses for Ponder this year,we invested heavily in the offensive line via draft

  48. By realviking on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

If our offensive line is so suck how did Ponder get the time to hit those receivers, one off Simpsons drops had to be at least 20 yards down fields.

so when ponder kept missing Harvin on the bubble screens was it the lines fault to. Or what about when he missed a wide open Armoshadu was it the lines fault.

Ponder showed me why he doesn’t throw the ball deep when he threw the deep ball to Wright in the lions game. I swear Wright had at least 5 steps on that defender a pass that could’ve been a touchdown was under thrown to the point where the receiver had to stop and wait for it and ended up getting tackled.

  49. By Ponder aka 3 and out on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

i noticed that too, wright’s pass was very underthrown. if we drop the green bay they should address the qb position, not wait until the end of the year

Since defenses wanna bring nine bodies to the box to stop AP all the time throw it over their heads because short routes are just sending your receivers to them.

Do a playaction fake to AP that would make the DB’s bite, have receivers run stop and goes and you’ll have someone wide open for a touchdown.

We don’t call deep plays because the play calling is to Ponders strength. Since he has a weak inaccurate arm we have the receivers run short routes hoping it benefit Ponder.

I agree, there are ways the Vikings could use a good player on third down!!!

They could also whip it to A.D. There is no way A.D. is not a good receiver, I am not buying the copouts that say he isn’t.

FredOFtheDogg thinks that there must be a way to get Gerhart, Peterson, and Harvin in the game at the same time.

FredOFtheDogg realizes that Ponders arm is not so bad that he can’t whip a long p@ass versus that 9-man box you mention.

You have seen the long (30 yards!) p@sses Ponder has thrown to Harvin. He has thrown at least two go route to the Harvin. In addition he threw the ball 50 yards to Burton once and another to Jarius Wright.

I believe that we should give ponder another year at the helm to see what we have got and draft around him as well as fix the Defense…..as I see it we are in dire need of a field stretching playmaking go up and get the ball at its highest point….physically freak of nature wideout somewhere bout 6’4″ or even 6’5″ 200-210lbs can run over the middle and punish dbs even in good coverage with hands as soft as sum virgin booty…….as well as left and right guard, right tackle and on defense i see a big run stopper at DT and a linebacker that can stop the run but also stay in the field on 3rd down and not be a liability against the pass……maybe another DE but not necessarily and whatever kind of help we can get in the 2ndary…….we might have something in cook if he can stay healthy and we keep developing josh robiinson but winfield im sure duznt have much life left in those legs so we gotta be thinking long term and we might be ok at safety…..personally i thiink WR is our biggest liability so i am against going after a 1st round QB i say we need to continue to put talent around ponder and if he isnt the answer and ol Joe webb finallly shuts up all his supporters by becoming the next T-jack then we can go after a veteran guy like we did with Jeff George, Randall Cunninghamm and Warren Moon oh cant forget the gun slanger Bret the gun slanger FAVRE and then in a couple seasons when we get some better talent in the draft at QB we can go after another franchise quarterback but only once we know forsure by giving ponder every opportunity from a personal stand point

Not going to happen, but it is at least a nice thought for change. I am just truly hoping that Ponder has a great game and gets some consistency going with his receivers.

So I think this game (like the CHI game) is a winable one for us. Actually more winable as GB’s D is not in the same class as CHI, heck, its not even in the same school. But the Ofense of GB is better. However it is going to be hard faught again, not going to be easy. It is either going to be a blowout from either team, or it will be super close all the way down to the wire.

    Here is my issue though….

CHI went on the road to SF and got absolutley destroyed. Then we travel to CHI and get destroyed ourselves from a peed off CHI team.

Well GB went to NY and got SMOKED!!! BAD!!! They got beat by NY worse then we did by CHI. Now we are traveling to a peed off GB team… I am starting to see a pattern and this worries me considering the caliber of team that we are going to be facing. I hate the Fudge Packers and if we win I am going to troll all over there stupid blog site and rub it in there moldy faces. We can also expect the same from some of their fans on here as well…

But IDK what is going to happen in this game. It could be really really really bad for us. Or it could be a wonderfull eye opener and we could win. See more produciton out of our rookies like J. Wright. And hopefully AD will have a monster game. 100+ yards and a TD or 2

(From a National Sun Media Poll on Canada’s favorite NFL team)…..The Minnesota Vikings received more votes than any other team in all five (geographic) polls combined. The Vikings were chosen as the favorite NFL team of 36% of respondents to the Winnipeg Sun poll, and of 10.5% of all respondents overall).

    This proves 2 points;

    (1) Dallas may CLAIM to be “America’s Team” (chuckle), BUT IT IS NOW PROVEN that Minnesota is DEFINITELY Canada’s Team !!!

How I imagine ponder aka 3IQ see’s the game …

OC Ponder sends the play in to the QB Ponder. We got Ponder split out wide and Ponder 10 yards deep in the backfield.

Ponder takes the snap from Ponder. Drops back and under pressure immediately due to an awful block by Ponder. Ponder is open deep but Ponder is running for his life because the 2 OGs Ponder and Ponder both whiffed ….

Ponders evades the sack but being chased he see’s Ponder in the flat throws a perfect pass that sticks in Ponders facemask … doh- Ponder dropped it.

    6 wins …. 21 guys to thank

    5 losses … 1 man to blame

  122. By H.M.G. on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

Jenkins can’t run. Simpson can’t catch. Aromashodu does not give full effort. Burton is a blocking WR.
Harvin is hurt and the only WR besides him who can catch is Wright and the coaching staff does not trust him because he is a rookie.
    All this is Ponder’s fault.

I see a lot of over reaction here almost ALL the time.
    1) that criticism of Ponder is seen as blaming him for all the losses (incorrect)
    2) that any critical opinion is some kind of “bashing” simply because there is a hyped element in the fan base that doesn’t like critical commentary.

It’s a football blog friends, where ALL opinions can be spoken as long as the censor allows.

But simply put, Ponder is NOT good and all the hope for his emergence will go unrewarded. There are fundamental FLAWS and they are glaring to those who know the position, and the Vikes KNOW they made a mistake, but in their original remarks when they drafted him, they honestly thought they could form him into a winning, play-makinng QB….And with some 22-23 starts under his belt he still looks like the green dandelion that he is. That is not our imagination.

Last in p@ss plays beyond 20 yards…. and of those we DO have, about half were catch and run plays. This should speak loudly to all. If you like him, great, but you needn’t try to claim he is good and we should be patient —- because we shouldn’t. It is a competition, and the aim is to win always.

The Vikings need to do as the Packers and other teams have done, have an great veteran QB lead the team for a year or two, ( while rebuilding), having the young gun learn on the side line from the veteran, then when the young gun is ready give the starting spot to him. Look at Denver and what they are achieving. The way any team plays is a direct reflection of the coach and his staff’s ability to lead a team. I am convinced that our coaches are not the answer to this team’s problem.

I knew pretty much half way through the first quarter last week…The Vikings defense would not get to Cutler…: /

Its obvious this coaching staff learns NOTHING from watching game tape on how other SUCCESSFUL teams attacked the Bears…

The 49ers absolutely KILLED the Bears O-line using a slightly wide 3/4 stance from their DE’s on the outside and coming after those T’s with a straight bull rush…Making the one dimensional taught O-lineman, to start coming out of their 3 point stance, before the DE’s attacked them…The only way the tackles of the Bears can do there jobs…Is if the DE’s use a base 3 point stance coming after them…

The Vikings DE’s did not come out of their 3 point stance even once in that game…Something the 49ers did to perfect to destroy the O-line of the Bears just the weekend before ???…

Coaching everyone….It all come down to coaching…

listen up Les…i don’t want…i repeat…DON”T WANT you to prepare the team like you did during the 2 week vacation you just had…like vikes or die…my hair/nerves/bloodvessels and other body parts won’t survive it. play solid…hard nosed smashmouth football…give the testicle to AP…he will turn that Packer ‘D’ into (SWISS) Packer cheese. Nova i always knew the Vikes were team of choice up here…great to be part of the 36%…put on the game face Les…Baaaarrrooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmm…GO VIKES!!!

I am tired of hearing about the opposing teams woes and injuries in the press. Our defense has been thinned out in the secondary and THE top 2 offensive threats in the NFL on our squad are not healthy. Let’s see how much national press and media attention that gets. SICK of it.

    @BB7

Wait? whos coats am I going to hold???

I will be very upset this weekend if we lose to the packers however, I live in MIN as most of us do. and I realize that in is hard to have 100% faith in any of our male sports teams. (Lynx – only consistent good MN team) So I understand that this game is a long shot, but if we don’t make any mistakes, win the turn over battle and play smash mouth footb@ll with AD, Toby and Harvin. We may be able to pull the upset. And yes it is an upset because the only people that think we can win is our own fan base…. usually a bad sign

Just a note to the politicians here – you can check the National Debt and actually find out which party is most responsible…. yes, they call it research.

You will be very surprised by your finding. And disappointed if you are just chest thumping about how “conservative” the “conservative party” is.

But this site ain’t about politics.

    Go Ponder!

Bottom line get a qb that can lead.
today’s qb must do more than just manage the game.
ponder is a system qb,which is something the vikes dont need
with the lack of talent at wr & o-line help.
he tries to improvise, but 75% of the time it doesn’t pan out
    to be a good thing.

I’m sick and tired of les an mike wob sucking up to ponders n u t s!!!! I’m his Monday mail bag wob said we need to stay patient and let ponder improve! Well, mike wob its week 13 and ponder cannot produce!!! Just admit it, ponder sucks! If he’s going to improve he would have already! Look at luck, reg3 better yet nick foles!! They are all rookies and improving as they go. While ponder on the other side plays worst than a high school qb!!! I the Vikings going to pay ponder to hand the ball off the Adrian and throw ints then ya can hired me, I won’t cost as much! This organization is a joke! How do I get in touch with the wilfs???
