5 Vikings-Packers Storylines To Follow

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 28, 2012 – 7:29 am

The 2012 version of the twice annual border battle rivalry between the Vikings and Green Bay Packers commences this week at Lambeau Field, as the 7-4 Packers will host the 6-5 Vikings. Sunday’s game will be the first of two between the teams in four weeks and it marks the latest in a season that these teams have played the first game in the season series.

The week leading up to Vikings vs. Packers is always fun because there is so much on the line on game day, regardless of records or time of year. As we anticipate Sunday’s game, here are five Vikings-Packers storylines to follow this week…

1. Vikings Look To Remain In Playoff Chase
Sunday’s game at Lambeau is not “do or die” for the Vikings with regard to their playoff outlook. But there’s no denying how important a win would be to the Vikings as they look to stay in the hunt for not just a Wild Card berth, but also a division title. Last week’s loss in Chicago dropped the Vikings two games behind the Bears, but there are still five to go (including this week in Green Bay) and the Vikings get one more shot at the Bears. On top of that, the Bears have a tough game against the Seahawks at home this weekend and they also have games remaining against the Packers and at the Detroit Lions.

Regardless of how the Bears do this week against Seattle, the Vikings can move into a tie with the Packers at 7-5 with a win.

2. Packers On The Rebound After Blowout Loss To Giants
Last week’s Sunday Night Football game featured a matchup between the last two Super Bowl champions – the Packers and the NY Giants. But just one of the teams looked super, and it wasn’t Green Bay. The Giants logged a 38-10 victory. As such, the Vikings aren’t the only team in this week’s NFC North showdown coming off a thorough loss. A quick look at the game’s stats doesn’t yield an obvious reason for Green Bay’s lackluster showing, but New York did capitalize on two specific stats that likely led to the final outcome: the Giants were +2 in turnover ratio and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was sacked 5 times. Expect Green Bay to make those two stats points of emphasis this week as they prepare for the Vikings.

3. Both Teams Dealing With Injuries To Key Players
The Vikings have been missing WR Percy Harvin since he sprained his ankle in a Week 9 loss at Seattle on November 4, and now all eyes will be on TE Kyle Rudolph and S Harrison Smith after they left last week’s loss against Chicago to be evaluated for concussions. In addition to that, both LB Jasper Brinkley and RB Adrian Peterson have shoulder ailments and RT Phil Loadholt is dealing with knee inflammation. None of those players have been ruled out for Sunday’s game, and in fact it’s entirely possible that they’ll all be available, but their statuses do bear monitoring as the week goes.

The Packers are dealing with their own injuries, as well. WR Greg Jennings, LB Clay Matthews and DBs Sam Shields and Charles Woodson all missed last week’s game with injuries. They’ve also lost players such as RB Cedric Benson, starting RT Bryan Bulaga, and LBs Desmond Bishop and Nick Perry to injury for extended periods of time and some even for the season.

4. Can Green Bay Contain Adrian Peterson?
Vikings RB Adrian Peterson is the kind of player that can win a game for his team any week, no matter the matchup. Green Bay ranks 11th against the run this season, giving up 103.8 rushings yards per game. More impressively, though, is the fact that Green Bay has allowed just one 100-yard rusher this season. On the flip side, Peterson has six 100-yard games already this year, including 5 straight. And he’s the NFL’s leading rusher by 172 yards, is on pace for a career-high 1,798 rushing yards and loves running against the Packers.

5. Vikings Pass Rush Must Reemerge vs. Rodgers, Packers Offensive Line
Only one team (Arizona – 46) has allowed more sacks this season than the Packers (37). The bread and butter of the Vikings defense in recent seasons has been their pass rush. Huge advantage for the Vikings, right? You’d think so, but lately the Vikings pass rush has been contained. The Vikings have just 5 sacks in the past four games, and they rank just tied for 13th in sacks this season with 27. If the Vikings want to go into Lambeau Field and pull off this upset, they must get more pass-rushing production from their defense. The man to lead the charge is Jared Allen, who has 13.0 sacks against Green Bay in just nine career games.

Vikings express disappointment over Dayton letter
Posted by Mike Florio on November 13, 2012, 4:25 PM EST

“APMinnesota governor Mark Dayton sent a nasty letter to the Vikings on Tuesday regarding the team’s intended use of PSLs to partially finance the team’s $477 million contribution toward a new stadium. The Vikings have responded with a tactful, yet pointed, public statement.”

I am wondering if the Governor has realized that the state of Minnesota cannot afford the new stadium due to the fact that the courts most likely will find the funding mechanism unconstitutional, forcing the state to find the money some other way. I think the Governor is trying to find someone to blame.

I Know, Ponder is at fault, LOL.

I have been silently watching the past thread..Waiting to see among the blogs on who would get my personal best grades on the Bear loss last week…From what they saw in that game…

    Shawn…Is by far the winner…

    aka 3….Does not even deserve a grade…

Many of the others have had some very solid observations…Freddog,C’mon man, etc…

Many have still been complaining across the board, that Ponder and Musgrave lost that game…

Instead I believe Ponder and Musgrave did a good job…Ponder had 159 yards and a TD with 1 int…But….And this is a huge BUT….

Ponders receivers dropped 7 pass attempts (in stride, some being over 20 yard plays with plenty of room to run after the catch if the catch had been made) and 2 of those pass attempts could have been TD receptions also…

If you add just 5 of those (perfect) pass attempts dropped to Ponders totals…And an (easy) 80 yards and at least one of those dropped TD pa sses…

Ponders game totals would have been around 240 yards and 2 TD’s…And if AP does not lose 2 fumbles to the Bears….And the defense would have put some kind of pressure on Cutler ???…The Vikings most likely WIN that game…

Musgrave called the right plays (even the 3rd and 2 yards to go…Wright SHOULD have caught that pass for a TD)…Ponder made the throws…

The outside WR’s (other than Wright) were plain PATHETIC !!!!….And I don’t care if AP had his 100 yards or not…AP had his share of the blame for the 2 dropped fumbles in that game also…

This game was lost by the whole team…Not by Ponder or Musgrave…

    Very good evaluation Shawn !!!…

The Packers have flaws just as we do, maybe not to the extent that we do, but we CAN beat the Packers. I predict we will lose not because of us but because the Pack are going to come out just like the bears did after getting blown out. I really think we will make a game out of it though. It will be close.

Anyone with a brain knows it takes a team to win a team sport, and it takes a team to lose. They all failed to do their jobs so they lost the game, must have had too much time off and too much turkey in the bellies. I hope they all get their heads out of their a-s-s-e-s and show up to play GB or it will be another long day for the Vikings.

Webb is not a joke…But he does have to sit on the bench and wait for his time to shine…

I personally hope that doesn’t happen anymore this season…Because if it happens…That means Ponder will have to sit because of injury…I don’t wish back up QB’s to play…UNLESS the season is out of reach or because of injury…Right now that is not the case with either scenario…

Kaipernick got his shot…Because of injury..He showed what he could do…And has earned the starting QB job…That is the way QB battles are won….And the right way…

If the season gets lost…Look to see Webb try and save a spot on next years roster…By getting some late season starts…But he sits unless Ponder is injured…Or the season is lost…

I know Simpson had some key drops on Sunday but I bet if we cut him right now he would be putting up numbers on another team. The guy was always known for drops but still put up numbers last season when he had a real quarterback throwing to him.

Rodgers didn’t look good on Sunday but i don’t see Packers fans bashing him about it because they know what he did for that team. Peterson lose two fumbles and Vikings fans are cashing for his head blaming him for the loss. Did you guys forget that Peterson is the one guy we been counting on since he was drafted and he shows up and win games for us.

Jared Allen led the league last season in sacks and he post double digit sacks every season even with being double teamed. Allen so far is having a down year and fans are calling for his head. Robison gets 1 on 1 every week and only have 5.5 sacks and no one is calling for his head. How do you not get double digit sacks at least in one season while playing across from the sack master.

  58. By Carl K on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

I am not a big fan of a vanilla 4-3 D because it is just too easy for today’s NFL QBs to connect on short pa.sses on 1st and 2nd downs to RBs and TEs.

  59. By Frederick Jones on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

    @dryes,

It might not be Ponder’s alleged weak arm. But you might be right about throwing over the top. It’s difficult to throw over the top when you have a 6’5″ guy over your top!

That’s why you bring in JOE in those situations.

  60. By Parkway on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

Robison is so streaky. One game he’ll have 3 swatted p@sses and 2 sacks and you’ll think he is the next JA, but then he disappears for 5 games and you completely forget about him.

I definitely agree with blitzing Winfield this week, and I’m wondering why we haven’t sent Harisson Smith at the qb more often this season? Last week we came with a safety blitz off the right side of the line using Sanford and were able to get some pressure (although it didn’t help much Cutler still completed the pass) but I think that’s something we should take a look at. We NEED to feed the beast against Green Bay, AP can not be stopped by anyone lately (just hope he tucks the ball away) sustain long drives by getting into 3rd and manageable and then throw the short routes. Best way to beat the Packers is to keep their offense on the sideline and eat up clock. Plus it will keep the defense fresh so they don’t have to chase those speedy receivers all day long and get burned late in the game. Obviously we need to get pressure on Rodgers too, and when he escapes the pocket hopefully someone is waiting for him because he can run pretty good also.

    GO VIKES!

    @Titus,

I am not down on Frazier as much as I am disappointed in his control of his offensive coaches. But again we don’t really know how they do things. Perhaps Bill Musgrave have total control of the offense. In which case he should be let go.

I suggest the hiring of Mike Grant. He was a college QB, and has led Eden Prairie to, JoneDogg believes, 8 state championships. Certainly he knows football, and he would be a shot in the arm for our QBs because he would praise them, and probably gush over their abilities.

Right now Ponder needs some gushing!!!

Todays D is all about athletic LBs that can do it all.

To some extent you have to believe what KFan has stated. That is that we started off 5-2 because the teams were WEAK. Now we are 1-3 in the last four games because the opposition is STRONG.

    That matters!!

You guys blame our defensive players for that loss but I won’t we have a idiot coach who only relies on his from for to put pressure. Look at when the bears played the 49ers the coach didn’t just use the d line he blitz linebackers all day I saw Bowman and Willis back their all game rushing the quarterback. The bears did the same thing to us they blitzed their linebackers. A DB can not cover a receiver all day so if they see the front four wasn’t getting to Cutler why didn’t they send Greenway. Our defense is not aggressive i remember when we had the best run stop defense Chad Greenway had 6 sacks Ben Leber was constantly in the back field, but now it seem as if were playing conservative on both side of the ball.

Joe Webb will stay on the bench for the Green Bay game. This team is looking at the long not the fan’s short term expectations. They will stick with Ponder for the rest of season and it’s only right since he is a basically a rookie QB. I don’t see Webb being part of the team next year. I think you all need to re-evaluate your football thinking. This team is building for the future and although they want to win every game, they may not always be able to do it. Mistakes happen with young teams and we are seeing those growing pains. There is not reason up to this point to throw any player under the bus. I specifically point out those of you that want th throw Fraizer under the bus, when we all agreed at the start of the season to see what happens at the end of this season. Well we aren’t at the end yet. I believe Ponder will work out his issues and hopefully the rest of the team can too. When this team is hitting on all cylinders they are scary good. When they are not they are awful. We have seen both this season. I am confident we will only get better with time. They have already surpassed my expectations this year. The rest is cake. Go Vikings.

I watch every NFL team play aggressive when they get a lead on a team they wasn’t to put up more points. When we get in front of a team instead of paying aggressive we switch to a prevent defense giving three opposing offense a chance. When we get a lead on a team our offense goes 3 and out on every possession giving the other teams offense good field position.

How many games have you guys seen the opposing offense march from their own 20 yard line to go score on us.
Most of the points we give up is because we give the other team the ball at their 40 yard line, your defense gets tired when your offense goes gives the ball back right away that’s why they say the defense feeds off of the offenses energy.
Its like our coach is caching for field goals because once we get to the opponents side of the field we start playing conservative instead of keeping the same mindset that got us their.

Joe is tall, has big hands, can run, jump, and is a great thinker on the football field. Kfan made the statement that it’s not how many MBAs you have as a QB. You must be able to make quick decisions. You must know where to throw the ball, and when. You must know how hard to throw the b@ll.

This is going to be a big game and experience for our rookies DB’s Josh Robinson and Harrison Smith if he plays.

Other then Reggie Wayne what other weapons did they say Luck had coming into the season? None. Good quarterbacks make everyone else better that’s what luck did.

Coming into the season what weapons did they say Tannanhil have? None. Good quarterbacks make everyone else better and i still don’t know three names of the Miami receivers but Tannanhill makes them look good.

Other then A.J Green how many weapons did Dalton have. He’s doing good at the Bengals.

None of those teams have a running back like ours or TE. It took one receiver and a good quarterback to make the others better.

Tebow, Quinn, Orton couldn’t complete a pass last season blame it on the O Line and receivers. They went and got Manning and suddenly everyone looks like Pro Bowlers.

Wes Welker was buried in the dolphins roster, goes to the patriots and Brady makes him the best slot receiver.

Good quarterbacks make everyone good. Favre came and took us to the nfc championship while t.jack made us look horrible.

He starts this year with more experience but still running for his life or receiver dropping the ball. Its always easy to go with the back up but Webb had oppurnity to start with Childress, although I belive he had Webb as being a receiver/playmaker, and when Frazier too over he went with Ponder as well and keeps defending this position on his QB. That’s how you develop quarterbacks, by playing them. If Joe Webb never gets to play he will have a hard time developing.

Why not have 2 good young quarterbacks as opposed to one???

It would do Ponder good to sit on the bench. That’s not throwing him in front of the bus. The bench can be very educational.

I’m not bashing you FJ. Just having some fun is all. I do agree that maybe it wouldn’t hurt for Ponder to do some pondering on the bench. I think that what we need to do is play as many of our backups as possible to see where we stand with them. If they do good….lets keep them on the team. If they are like BB…..cut them loose! You never know what you have until you try it.

As for the people here that will say that we are in the middle of the playoff hunt….All I have to say is “Playoffs? Playoffs? Are you kidding me? I just hope we win one more game.” Just because we are statistically still in it doesn’t mean that we stand a chance at making it to the show.

BTW the playoff’s thing was a quote.

  172. By Mike B. on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

@Fred I have only proven that Ponder will remain the starting QB. He will get this entire season to learn his trade. I like to see the Vikings win games, but as young as this team is they aren’t going to win every game. Besides they have done better than expectations anyway. Bringing in Webb will only cause a QB contraversy and as the coaches don’t think he’s a long term starting option it would be unwise to do so. It’s better to go with you believe in than try any option to win a couple games.

That’s not all QBR is. I know as a Ponder supporter you would want to count garbage time stats and YAC equal as doing something productive, but QBR does not weigh them the same. Honestly, if you took away garbage time stats and all of the YAC that Harvin gives Ponder….. the stats would be incredibly embarrassing for him.

A lot of peoples don’t understand qb rating and completion percentage. Ponders rating looks ok only because the guy doesn’t throw beyond 10 yards. Now we all watch football some even played so we all should know that the chances of completing a 5 yard pass is greater then completing a15 yard pass. Most of Ponders completions came on bubble screens other then dumping it off that should be the easiest pass to throw and he even struggle doing that. When he’s forced to throw it deep we all know what happens, he’s out their throwing to his imaginary friend. Other rookies or second year quarterbacks are gunning it down field.

Good QB’s make below average WR’s look above average and average WR’s look like HOF’s. Problem is we arent even close to having a starting college QB. Someone said “its like trying to make an athlete a QB” – In my opinion it is better than what we have back there right now. Right now we have a “wanna be” QB that wishes they were an athlete and could make some plays. PONDER BLOWS, this season is over lets try to get a “good” long term QB and some WR talent here next year….FIRE FRAZIER, MUSGRAVE…SIT PONDER…HE IS A LAME DUCK. HE HAS HAD 1 1/2 years (while most uneducated Vike fans would like you to think he hasnt even played a whole season) and personally I think TJACK was 10x better than Ponder ever will be and we all know TJACK blows….As long as Ponder is our QB we will enjoying watching other teams playing in the playoffs, HARVIN leaving, no WR talent will want to come to this team because of lack of QB…Just as a good QB can make average WR look like HOF’s a poor QB can make a HOF WR look below average. Ponder blows…why cant we see the forest for the trees….Sure we have other issues but issue #1 is our QB #2 OC #3 D

Sorry for the late start today…. (Work gets in the way sometimes) I know you are all on pins an needles on what Troutdaddy has to say….

First of all, the Chicago loss is behind us now. It was a team loss. Too mnay “Not enoughs” and too few “above and beyonds”. The focus now is how in the heck do the Vikes put together these missing pieces. i think it starts with:
1- OL- protect the QB This is Vital.
2- QB- make the reads and throw the freakin rock. Quit panicking. If you choke while being protected, then it is time to sit.
3- If we go 3 & out the first two sets, then let Webb or MBT come in for a spin.
4- Put Harvin, Wright, Simpson, Aroma and Rudolph ALL together on the same plays and cause confusion.
5- Peterson and Gearhart interchange at times.
6- Defense needs to pass rush and AUDIE COLE needs to be active.
7- Vikings secondary needs to play tight and we need turn-overs! (Not the apple kind)
8- Coaches need to pull out the stops and be aggressive. Use our key players on key plays and trust in them to make the play. Hold them accountable and be passionate about it.

Again, I am not about throwing people under the bus, but if you look back at what many fans have screamed for this year, the games we have been successful in are the ones where we saw the changes occur.

If we go back to the same scheme and the same thought process then GB is going to do what Chicago just did to us. With jennings coming back, we need to be even more ready for them this week.

I think that after the feeble attempt by the Vikings at the Bears.

The team just might all set down, look at each other and refect on just how and why they stunk up Soldiers Field.

They just may come up with a determination to go all out against Green Bay.

I hope so, I want something to cheer about. Just this once, OK guys?

  224. By Mike B. on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

BMT might be he was good enough to unseat a veteran QB. But you are probably going to be in the same situation as you are now. New QB adjusting to the NFL. I still think you stay the course with Ponder and see what the outcome is. This is what the team has been doing so far so no reason to change wth the season over half complete.

The reason no one was asking for WEBB when Favre was hurt is because a hurt Favre is better than a healthy WEBB. Problem with that analogy here is a healthy Ponder has not proven to be a better option than throwing Jared Allen in the QB position. To compare Webb for Ponder to Favre for Webb is not even a close comparision. Ponder is not accurate either, unless its a 3 yard pass (and even than he is off mark 1/2 the time). So why not throw in the better athlete? Just an honest opinion.

  227. By realviking on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

Ponder is not the short or long term answer Ponder should’ve been on the bench long before the bears game. This team can succeed now but the coaches are holding them back. Coaches don’t know who to start or who to sit.

Ponder throws for 58 yard and Frazier ways he did some things out their.
Our defensive front has been awful all season Frazier says I believe in those guys to get pressure and stand by it even when the D Line is showing they need some help.
Harvin gets injured Frazier puts him back in the game where any other coach would sit him to not risk anything.
Ponder is limping on the field Frazier leaves him on the field and allows him to continue holding back the team.
Musgrave has a playbook with three plays Frazier says that’s enough to help us win every week.

Your knowledge is respected, but really has no bearing on Ponders situation. As much as you hate the guy (it is VERY Obvious) you still have to give him the chance to play because YOU DON’T DECIDE…. Lol…You sound like “Uncle Rico” from Napoleon Dynamite trying to relive his past… It is over dude…. 4-3 CAN work just look at the Giants AND the Bears

We need to blitz Winfield more. Take Henderson out on obvious passing situations. Bring up Harrison Smith to the line to cover the opposing TE. Put Raymond in with Sanford while Smith is playing up in the box. Bring Everson Griffen in as a blitzing LB on passing situations. Do NOT blitz anyone unless their name is Winfield, Griffen, or Smith. Drop Jared Allen back in coverage while sending Everson in to confuse the QB. Jared has had success in the past dropping back to take away the hot routes. There is so many Different looks we can give Rodgers with this 4-3 defense. Heck bringing in Sherels will be enough to confuse a QB as he will be wondering what a punt returner is doing on defense.

Can we talk about defense for once and not who should or should not be the QB?

  271. By Tomcat on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

Greenway and Henderson have blitzed successfully as well.

    __________________________________________________________________

Statistics show that this statement is incorrect.

You’ve stated that every good QB does well in their 2nd season: That’s not true.

A couple weeks ago you said that a team won’t beat the bears if the QB throws for less than 210 yards: Later that night Houston beat the Bears and Shaub threw for 95 yards.

So maybe you should rethink the ” I am always right” part of your statement. Because it turns out you have been wrong quite often.

  274. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

Defense needed to get creative last week…

But I suppose Frazier thought the Bears O-line should have been poor enough for the Vikings base defense to do the job…

That base defense didn’t work…No adjustments were made at half time…

Ponder didn’t do his job again, by not making any half time adjustments on defense…

Because their LBs can actually cover people, blitz, and defend the run. Our LBs can only do 1 of those things. Or at least the coaches only allow them to do that 1 thing.

My thoughts exactly aka- I am willing to see how Ponder does as well. I have mixed emotions about him. I hope he comes out and absolutely kills it in his remaining games and comes out looking lke a hero, but if he stinks it up and folds like a lawn chair then I will be all about change. I go through this same process with my son. He is 14. he likes me to play “Halo” with him on occasion. I am not terrible at it and he has been letting me “Grow” through experience and I am getting better, but half the time he shakes his head and calls me a noob, the other half he is high-fiving me for doing well. I told him to just not call me Ponder…. Sounds kinda familiar….

    @GrandDaddyPurps

I think its the coaches they play our DB’s 10 yards back because there scared that’s why Marshall kept getting the underneath stuff. They don’t put our players I’m a position to be successful. Our strategy is rush the front four and drop the linebackers back in zone

  280. By Troutdaddy on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

By the way- Tarkenton IS an Icon, great person and has valuable insights. I hope he is right about Ponder, but if he is not, then I think he will admit it in the end. He is a stand-up guy. If we had him in his peak right now, I think he would have been successful. he could scramble- but more important- he had the smarts for the game and was quick to make decisions. I think he would have done well in the league today, but that is anyone’s guess.

Tarkenton was wrong when he said we shouldn’t sign Favre. Why didn’t Tarkenton ever sport Culpepper the way he supported Ponder. With Culpepper we had the best passing game in the NFL with Ponder we have one of if not the worst. I think Tarkenton was talking about his smarts not football
    ———————————————————————————————————————–

haha please tell me you’re not comparing what Culpepper had to work with to what CP has to work with……. Yeah, Moss and Carter really do compare to Jenkins and Aromashadu… LOL

I’m sure your boss at any job expected you to work hard everyday.

Moss and Carter and don’t forget Cater retired and Culpepper and moss was the greatest duo in our history. He didn’t have Carter when he threw 49 td’s did he. He never had a running game. Ponder has Harvin and the best running back in the league. Peterson alone should make Ponder good since teams bring a 9th man in the box. Ponder is going against corner backs and 1 safety and still looks terrible.

@Realviking…. so true my friend. I think the Ponder waiting game is going to hit its peak this weekend in the eyes of most fans, I would love to go back and get Culpepper with Carter, Moss, Harvin and Peterson all on the same field in their prime… Somehow we need to get all of these pieces together in the here and now so we can quit dreaming and start living it…

Look at the film…WR are open, ponder over throws, throws out of bounds, throws INT’s. While this past weeks wasnt a total Ponder Destruction (like every other loss this year was -Indy), a good QB would of stood up and helped the team push through. Ponder is not an NFL QB. It happens. He is just not cut out for this job. If at worked I preformed like he does week in week out I would be in the unemployment line. He is a good 2nd/3rd string QB but definately not a starter in this league (not now, and possibly never). Hope im wrong but numbers don’t lie, he is one of the worst starting QBS in the NFL.

  302. By Parkway on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

That’s what I’ve been saying Shawn, not that I necessarily agree that he is not the weakest link, but we need to focus heavily on offense this offseason to give POnder the best chance to succeed. Then he won’t have any excuses, and in his 3rd year we should know for sure whether or not he can be our franchise QB. At least one OG and 2 big WR should do the trick.

I think we actually have a chance at beating them if Ponder can manage the game. AP always have a big game against those guys the focus will be on him as always. Ponder just needs to step up and take advantage of their secondary which is at its weakest point right now.

I just hope we don’t fall behind early because we know what happens when we fall behind. AP disappears and Ponder is forced to throw the ball which equals blowout we lose

It is interesting how teams that have trouble protecting their qb do such a great job vs the Vikings and revert back to their old ways the next game…these teams must really get motivated to play the Vikings…it cant be a talent issue as so many posters think the Vikings are one qb away from sb champs…iI bet every nfl team would trade their wr for the Vikings wr as we have not seen such wr talent in decades on a team…

Why would the Vikings go get a game manager for qb? A game manager is someone you give the game while your ahead and tell them make sure they don’t lose this lead. we can’t even get a good lead to start with so what’s the benefits of a game manager.

Alex Smith is a true game manager and it took the 49ers about 5 years to figure that out, and now that they have weapons on offense they for Smith they realized that they want more then a game manager so they benched him.

I don’t see a good future for game managers in the NFL you need to be able to lead your team, put up points, and win shoot outs against other quarterbacks especially in the division were I’m.

autobon7, be prepared for the backlash… your commentary is not rare, but it is not held by most here – Parkway and I and Ponderaka are perhaps the most common and direct in this opinion.

The odd part is, we make remarks about the football player and Ponder fans blast us personally. Never could understand that. But join the club, cuz it will come.

You are also RIGHT. Ponder lacks pocket awareness, he does not move within pocket well, he abandons the pocket to quickly, and almost exclusively over the top and to the RIGHT….. this makes him EASY to gameplan to in your pass rush techniques….. AND Ponder “picks his receiver” standing over center causing him dilemmas (and most of his interceptions) because most of his chosen receivers get closed on due to “telegraphing” by Ponder.

Case in point, he had Wright in back corner for TD, but Ponder “was looking for Rudolph” while Rudolph was getting his jock knocked to the dirt by Briggs…. then Ponder notices Wright TOO Late (lot of that with him) and high and soft throw caused safety to close and Wright alligatored the ball… incomplete instead of TD.

And that is how it happens and too often. We will see a change, but not until 2014 is my guess. The Org will make the mistake and not pursue a real starter in draft is my guess. They will push this project forward come helk or high-water.
