Peterson Extends Rushing Lead In 5th Straight 100-Yard Game

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 27, 2012 – 7:12 am

Adrian Peterson continued his remarkable season in Sunday’s loss to Chicago by registering his first 100-yard outing against the Bears since 2008. While 100-yard outings are tough to come by against the Bears stingy defense, Peterson has been hitting that threshold with regularity against opponents this season.

Against the Bears, Peterson carried the ball 18 times and ran for 108 yards, giving him his 6th 100-yard outing of the season and his 5th such performance in a row. He’ll have a chance to break the team record for consecutive 100-yard rushing games – which he shares with Robert Smith – this week in Green Bay. The Packers do rank 11th in the NFL against the run, but Peterson has also averaged 103.3 rushing yards per game against Green Bay. Peterson already holds the Vikings franchise record for career 100-yard games with 32 – Smith was the previous record-holder at 27.

With Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch held to 46 yards and Houston’s Arian Foster rushing for 102 yards, Peterson extended his NFL rushing lead and is now 172 yards ahead of the 2nd-place rusher (Foster). Entering this past week’s games, Peterson held a 123-yard lead over Lynch. Through 11 games, Peterson has 1,236 rushing yards, which averages out to 112.3 yards per game and puts him on pace for a career-high 1,798 yards.

It will be interesting to watch this final 5-game stretch in the NFL for many reasons, mostly to see which teams can get hot and make a run through the playoffs. But there are plenty of other subplots to watch, as well, and a couple Vikings fans should keep an eye on is the MVP race and the Comeback Player of the Year race. Peterson should be considered a candidate for both right now, and I think it comes down to Peterson and Peyton Manning in the Comeback Player of the Year race.

    So i look to the right and see some of the tags. How is Asher Allen, Cedric Griffin, Chester Taylor, Darrell Bevell, Donovan McNugget, Ryan Longwell, Sidney Rice, Steve Hutch, Tyrell Johnson, Visanthe Shiancoe, and Bernard Berrian still tags?

    I cant help but think this is all somehow Ponder’s fault…..

    I think if Ponder was more of a play-maker like he was in the first 5 weeks, we would be on a roll right now. But no, of course we can’t have that. I will say though, as long as Peterson keeps racking up the yards, it will give me something to root for if the team can’t finish in at least a wildcard spot.

    Would probably help if the D played like they did in the first five weeks too……thanks for making our point…

    It might also help if the receivers didn’t kill drives by dropping bal.ls thrown right to em

    Did you see some of the catches Marshall made on Sunday?? Cutler threw some TERRIBLE pas.ses to him, but he caught em and made Cutler look like an all-pro. Do any recievers do that for Ponder except for Rudy when he’s not double covered? Without Marshall Cutler would have thrown for less than 100 yards on Sunday…

    We gave the game to Chicago by multiple misues. I expect to see a different result when they come to our house. That brings me back to my previous point. If you can’t win on the road, you are going nowhere. Two weeks to prepare the players for Chicago, what went wrong.

    Hey GDP. I am glad Hutchinson is going to block for Chester Taylor who is going to catch a 4 yard pass and turn it into a 28 yard gain. Oh, i am sorry, was i remembering 2007?

    Constantly talking about everything that is GREAT about this team (AP) is fine, Wobschall, but NEVER discussing the very apparent problems that the Viking’s fans clearly see is like buying a $7500 sound system for your 1976 AMC Gremlin and bragging about it.

    I can tell you why receivers are dropping pa sses…And Brandon Marshall is catching pa sses…With CB’s hanging all over him ???…

    Its coaching…When the Vikings practice during the week…The secondary must not be “hitting” the receivers…Because when real games come around…Receivers are getting ready to absorb hit from the defense, more so than preparing to catch the footb all ???…And why were DB’s standing around slapping at footb alls thrown Marshalls way…Instead of “timing up hits” to legally jar the ball loose ???…

    It all goes back to coaching…SIMULATE REAL GAME SITUATIONS IN PRACTICE during the week !!!!…So that carries out on the field of play on Sundays !!!….

    But then again…All this might be Ponders fault also ???…

    @Parkway,

    To the JoneDogg mind it seems as though when you have just an FB standing next to the QB, you have pretty much ruled out the run.

    Defenses have got to be licking their lips in those situations! “ITS PARTY TIME!!!

    We also do a lot of “full house backfields” such as they did in the days of Pop Warner. Is that really necessary?

    I heard them say on KFan that we just don’t have enough talent on this team, and we only had success early because the teams were weaker.

    But it is possible that we are also not playing the right people, and use bad strategy.

    @OTKalil,

    Percy Harvin not being on the field recently is the fault of the VIKINGS TRAINING STAFF.

    Even foolish JoneDogg knows that you don’t RUN ON A SPRAINED ANKLE. Now Percy will have to have post-season surgery on the ankle.

    (You can run on stretched ligaments, JoneDogg once ran 5 miles on them. But it ruins your ankle.) They should know better than that, it’s a common football injury.

    It amazes me that the press hasn’t give them heat about it.

  38. By Troutdaddy on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

    Peterson is the man. Yes another 100+ yard game for him is amazing but it did not give the Vikings a W. We all know he is one of the driving forces on the team, but he is not the team and so to focus on him is just a distraction from the real issues.

    So- here is my take on the situation:

    1- O-line needs to protect Ponder (First Priority) He cannot run the plays without the time needed and he is not good when pressured. Period.
    2- Receivers need to get open down-field. (Use more people)
    3- Defense needs to get to the oppsing QB more often… Audie Cole?
    4- Defense needs to stop the run (Secondary defense is ok, but still loose on the 5-6 yard plays) Audie Cole- good solution here… Just sayin…
    5- Play calling must be aggressive and not predictable.

    We have difficulty playing road games for that reason. That may indeed be a major factor for why the Vikings lost in FreddDogg speak.

  45. By Frederick Jones on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

    @Troutdaddy,

    It is hard for us as fans to know whether Ponder is getting enough time to throw.

    JoneDogg has noticed that he’s not stepping up into the pocket when he throws. Is that just a bad habit, or is it impossible to do?

    Even if those things are true, the QB has to play better than that. Perhaps JOE with his height and leaping ability could PLAY TALLER than Ponder.

  54. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

    Fred…

    Many reasons…They don’t practice on grass enough…A player uses more muscle area playing in grass…Its harder to push off in grass…Than from an artificial surface…Cuts are totally different…You can slip or slide on grass…Where you wouldn’t on turf…

    And you coach players to the surface you play on…

    A team line coached to play on grass, translates to playing on turf surface…Way better, than vice versa…

    I don’t believe it’s Pionder as much as I think we could have a much better qb! I think it’s our play calling. We needed to rely heavy on peterson. Only 18 carries? He was obviously effective and without harvin we should have stuck with the run game. If we wanted to give AP a break then we pound the ground with Toby. Ponder also runs well with the ball too. I’d liek to see him running more to be honest. Things will open up for him to throw after our run game is dominating but we stop too early and abondon the run. We have the best RB in the league! he is paid that way as well! we shouldn’t be loosing focus on that. It’s how this team is built to win games.

    Also Kyle Rudolph is amazing to watch and we need to be more creative with him. You get those two guys the ball! without harvin in the line up and we should still win games! Simpson has been a disappoint but he is fast and should be a large threat down field later in the game when they start putting in a 9 man box

    You have something with the Vikings not being a grass team. But the coaches should know to prepare them for a “grass” game.

    But what I harped on before this game is getting Adrian Peterson and Harvin (or Gerhart) in on third down plays. This has been going on for the entire length of the Musgrave era.

    “SURPRISE” would be if they did play Peterson and Harvin on third down!

    If you play one of our fullbacks next to the QB, and no one else, there is NO threat of the run.

    Jones thinks he learned about “pinning yer ears back” and going after the QB in those situations. Think in terms of Eller, Larson, Page, and Marshall.

    Even worse than that is you can predict that they will do stupid things like that, and worse!!!

    OK< so I have a question…

    Are we going to see harvin back in this game?? does anyone actaully know??

    We really desperately need him back this week. The pukervillans Dfense is battered and weak without C. Mathews and C. Woodsen playing. We need him back for this game if it is possible. it's been 3 weeks on the ankle, I think it may be time, but I don't want him to rush it either.

    Ponder, Win or lose will be the starter for the remainder of the year. I agree without whom ever said it above that we should trade Jow Webb in the off season, get a different back up, or even bring in a different Veteran to teach Ponder some stuff he clearly can't learn without an experienced player telling him. The caoches aren't doing a good job trying to teach him. One week we all think he made a stride forward, then the next week we realize that he really took 5 steps back. The coaches can't keep the same lessons in Ponders head week to week. When your in school. You learn something each week, at the end of the semester you have to take a final. On that final there is a number of questions leading back all the way to week one. Well it seems as if Ponder would do great on the indavidual weekly quizes, but when you get to the end and or even the midterm it seems as if he would fail fail fail. For example, during the lions game, he stepped up in the pocket and threw rockets without issue to open recievers. (granted he had more time in the pocket) but then on Sunday not one time did he step up. It's like he forgot that lesson as soon as it was taught to him…

    IDK, just an observational opinion

    I do agree Musky that having Rosenfels would have helped Ponder’s development to some degree, though I still think he is lacking the physical tools to get it done.

    It was curious that they basically chose MBT over Rosenfels, which I thought MBT looked worthy of development with that cannon arm and prototype size, but if we are so dedicated to Ponder even if he throws 50 yards a game, what is the point to a 3rd string developmental QB when we won’t even put in our 2nd string when Ponder is struggling so badly?

  91. By Muskyfever on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

    Parkway you think almost exactly the way I do when it comes to our fearless QB.
    we are both on the same page as far as Ponder goes.

    If… I repeat IF MBT is going to be a good player later in life… Is Ponder the one we want him learning from??? I know I don’t…

    When I watch 5 rookies SMOKE good teams throughout the year. all of which have started FAR less games than Ponder. yes, I ahve expectations. Now also understand that the expectations would not be as high if we would have drafted Ponder where he actaully fit.. in the late second or early 3rd round selection. Just because someone is book smart, it does not mean they are going to be great at football. He was a 1st round 12th overall pick as you all know. There is constant expectations for ANYONE drafted in the first round. Thats just how it is throughout the NFL… Not just in Minnesota, where it is tough to be a sports fan

    You know who will be the best QB out of the 2011 class? Ryan Mallet. He will get 4 years learning behind Tom Brady and he has all the physical tools he needs and prototype size. I bet NE pulls a “peyton manning” on him and after Brady’s contract is up in 2014 they decide to start Mallet and Brady finds some other team.

    Maybe that’s when we will finally decide Ponder isn’t good so we can rent Brady for 3 years and make another NFC championship game.

    Most puzzling is the keeping of Peterson and Harvin out on 3rd downs. None of the announcers have given a reason for it.

Every time the run game gets going it is quickly eliminated with the unecessary play calls to try and throw down field with no down field threat. I realize it is a rebuilding year with more success than anticipated but it doesnt mean this team cant make the playoffs. This team has talent and does nothing to showcase it with pony league playcalling. Lets call more than 10 different plays against the pack.

    @Parkway,

    I looked at the QBR, and it is definitely team weighted. I’ve always said there is a thing called “Brady Time.”

    Brady Time is when the QB drops back 7 steps, picks his nose with his left hand, looks to his right, rubs his right hand on his butt, looks to his left, looks to the middle, pumps once, double clutches, and well you get the idea!

    @Parkway,

    I also looked it up on wikipedia, and they said that the language for QBR is “thousands of lines long” (or hundreds, I don’t remember or care).

    So, although they say the running back runs are not included, there are lots of other “hidden” statistics that the average fan does not have access to.

    WHICH MEANS THAT QBR IS BOGUS FOR 2012. They may fix it for the future, but currently it means nothing!

    Passer rating only accounts for:
    ATT = Number of pa ssing attempts
    COMP = Number of completions
    YARDS = Pa ssing yards
    TD = Touchdown pa sses
    INT = Interceptions

    While QBR accounts for:

    Win Probability: All QB plays are scored based on how much they contribute to a win. By determining expected point totals for almost any situation, Total QBR is able to apply points to a quarterback based on every type of play he would be involved in.
    Dividing Credit: Total QBR factors in such things as overthrows, underthrows, yards after the catch and more to accurately determine how much a QB contributes to each play.
    Clutch Index: How critical a certain play is based on when it happens in a game is factored into the score.

    Hmm I wonder which one is more telling of a QBs performance…..

    C;mon Man!, you might note that those numbers are amassed over 11 games…. puts whole new spin on this as a “success”….. Not to mention about 30% of his yards are YAC by guys like Harvin.

    But numbers aren’t everything – they might suggest talent or ability, but in this case, the numbers bely the truth. Ponder is not as good as some here hope. This pattern will continue – my prediction and not venomous, so save the invective.

    Just saying. We will have another QB by 2014. Hope I am wrong and Ponder just has some things to figure out still.

    5. Peterson is awesome, but give Toby a lot of chances also. Don’t want to see Adrian injured if Vikes make the playoffs.

(thanks to Harvin in large part), and NOT that Ponder is “statistically better than AL”…. because the numbers may APPEAR better, Luck is the difference maker… who does he have running the football?

    Yea, right. If Ponder were the ONLY offensive weapon we had, you really think Ponder would have 13 TDs and 9 ints????????? Not on your life.

    Luck is a stud and is fearless in pocket and manages the pocket and delivers a ball with precision and with heat when he needs. He has tools Ponder dreams of.

    You can’t compare statistics alone – surrounding assets have a little to do with statistics.

    Shawn, you make a reasonable point, but f you think Ponder is half as good as Luck’s toenail, then you are drinking the Kool aid, defend the stat machine all you want. Wayne isn’t HALF the receiver he once was… imagine if he did;t have a good to great QB throwing to him, he would look like….. Reggie Wayne of last year!

    You think Luck has something to do with Wayne’s season???? Wayne was AVERAGE with Painter throwing the ball…. imagine that.

    The other guys you are referencing are far from household names and is it the chicken or the egg???? Maybe it is LUCK who makes these guys look so good.

    Bank on that. Or you could put guy like Painter back in and watch that very competent team self-destruct all over again.

    Ponder on the other hand has the BEST running game in NFL and barely can score in red zone – he can’t find a receiver cuz he is so busy looking at the guy he selects while standing over center (case in pt, Wright in the corner WAITING for a football wide open while Ponder was ‘Trying to get the ball to Rudolph,” who had just eaten dirt because of Lance Briggs, and Ponder notices Wright just little too late). That failure is on the QB in every other NFL team across the league. Only in Minnesota do we see this defense of the guy who can’t score TDs.

  243. By Spencer on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

    Once the leader of the defense returns I believe JRob should be in the nickle with Winfield and AJ Jefferson should remain on the outside.

  244. By Shawn on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

    Vlad … I am not a huge Ponder fan, believe it or not. I will not watch a guy be scapegoated for something he shouldnt be. The Bear loss was far from Ponders fault.

    Ponder will be an average to good QB depending on the talent around him. He wont be elite but average to good is enough …

    Plenty of weaker links on this team than Ponder. Musgrave, Jedrops Simpson, Fusco, the Defense.

    Ponder needs a real WR to be truly judged … if we had Vincent Jackson, Pierre Garcon, or Reggie Wayne and still playing like he has then yes no questions but he doesnt …

    Stephen Burton … more drops than catches
    Jerome Simpson … more drops than catches (at least in the Bears game)
    Michael Jenkins
    Aromashadu

    I cant wait to see Percy and Jarius on the field at the same time but I have a feeling our coaches wont use them together right …

  245. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

    Well said Shawn, except I am not sure good is enough these days– not when you have 8-10 super QBs in the league at any one time — we need a very good quarterback to contend regularly. AP deserves a ring—one thing I hate in the NFL is when the elite players never get a superbowl win– we saw Barry Sanders never get one– Cris Carter– please not AP.

  246. By Vlad19 on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

    You are both right, more or less in my opinion, but the core of this discussion is about Ponder due to our eagerness and readiness to win football games. Ponder doesn’t have enough of what it takes, either in tools or leadership ability.

    The theory of great running games open up passing game is proven incorrect by Ponder’s work, and the easy “go-to” defense is he doesn’t have receivers, and while I agree they could be better, Jenkins has had respectable to good NFL career, Simpson had been touted as one of the phenom types, Rudolph is an Pro Bowler in the making, and Harvin and Peterson are about the best two offensive weapons a guy could HOPE for in the same offense…..

    Ponder still turns out average to BAD.

    And the most important thing about good to great players, they make those around them better….. ask yourselves honestly, is Ponder making others better? Leaders lead. Ponder grounds the ball, kind of sums it up. Wish it were different. I like the kid, I doubt he gets much better. Not enough to make us contenders, I will bet my house on that.

    @Parkway and Ponder 3,

    Well first Ponder 3 states that C. Ponder is averaging 6 yards while the other passers in the league are averaging 12! L :) :) K again at the Average Gain.

    Usually the Average Gain is about 8.50 for the leader and about 5.90 for the last place guy.

    Ponder 3 look at the Average Gain. You are WAY off!

    Ponder can still have a great season. But if he falters use JOE.

    It’s the same for any other position. If a lineman isn’t doing the job, replace him in the 2nd half.

    Common sense ain’t so common. I’m starting to wonder if our coaches have enough to coach in the NFL. Football ain’t rocket science!!!

    Why don’t any of you state the obvious; Ponder has no arm. His weak arm makes him one-dimensional, which allows defenses to key on that weakness. They know that he can’t sling it in there or over the top accurately. That makes it much easier to game plan and to cover the wide outs. His arm strength (lack thereof) is what undermines his confidence, therefore he hesitates, knowing that he can’t sling it. IT is pretty obvious. Scouting dropped the ball. We need a qb. we are wasting a lot of talent in their prime. Oh well, there’s more to life than being disappointed by a football team forever.

    I have full faith that Frazier will strategize a winning scheme this week; “We’ll have to look at the tape and see where we can improve.” I think they’ve been watching The Wizard of Oz trying to figure out why the poppy seeds we’re throwing on the field aren’t lulling the opposing teams to sleep. Otherwise, I’m unsure what tape they’re watching, or in what areas Frazier ‘thinks’ we need to improve.

    Is Frazier really confused about what we could do differently? Seriously, though, can you imagine showing up to work late repeatedly and telling your boss “I’m unsure what’s not working, but I’ll think about it for next week”? Someone bring this guy a speech coach and a thesaurus so he can at least lie in a new/creative way after each poor performance.

    It takes a good team to make a rookie/second year QB play well. RG3 just has an amazing set of skills. They are using him correctly and he is too elusive for defenses. I dont see him having the same success next year. Russel Wilson is playing on a Seahawks team that just know what they are doing. Great coaching, great players. Andy Dalton is playing well because he has AJ Green and a good coaching staff. They make good plays, their defense plays well and they dont turn the ball over. Miami dont have the receiver corps but Philbin is actually doing well for what hes got. You butt-hurt wannabe fans need to stop whining.No, Ponder is not carrying this team. Ponder isnt making the coaching staff look good. This is something I can agree with but saying Ponder is the reason for everything bad is just foolish and naive. Kids young and not developed enough. 3 and out- your a pitiful excuse for a fan. Close the lid on that dumpster of a mouth you have. Nothing but garbage is coming out. Isnt today trash today? Meh, Ill let you empty it then….carry on.
