Harvin Officially Out For Today’s Game

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on November 11, 2012 – 10:30 am

As expected, WR Percy Harvin will miss today’s game due to an ankle injury suffered in last Sunday’s loss to the Seahawks.  Rookie Jarius Wright is active for the first time in his career and will attempt to fill the large void left in the Vikings offense with the absence of Harvin, the NFL’s leading receiver heading into action today.

Here is the full list of Vikings inactives: QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson, WR Percy Harvin, CB Brandon Burton, LB Marvin Mitchell, OL Mark Asper, TE Allen Reisner and DT Letroy Guion.

Michael Jenkins will start in place of Harvin.  Fred Evans gets the nod for Guion.

Detroit’s inactives: DT Corey Williams, S Louis Delmas, S Amari Spievey, OL Corey Hilliard, OL Jason Fox, QB Kellen Moore and WR Brian Robiskie.

I gueess its about time that we really can see what Jarius Wright can do. And if ponder don’t get the passing game clicking then we need to change quaterbacks

Ponder will have negative net yards p@ssing today

Can we please incorporate Stephen Burton in the p@ssing game more? He has 4.4 speed, let him run the post route and watch him go for Six!

Thank goodness Jenkins is active !!!…

Every boat needs an anchor…Even a Vikings ship I guess ???

    ANYWAYS…

Go Vikings !!!!…Get after Stafford !!!…

Notice to Ponder supporters, when Ponder gets 150 garbage yards in the 4th quarter because we are down by 30 and Detroit is playing soft, please don’t quote that as a stat in his favor.

    Thanks

Nice work Wobs. ESPN reported that Harvin was out 2 days ago.
Today we find out if the Vikes have any intestinal fortitude.
Show us we are all wrong Ponder!

I don’t see why they don’t let Stephen Burton run deep. The guy is plenty athletic. He’s stronger and faster than AJ Green. Should be able to get off a jam and beat a corner with his speed. Don’t know if he has any quickness to him, or if it’s all north and south, but he did run a 4.38 at his pro day.

Its time for Ponder to step up and throw the ball down the field. Play action to AP and air it out to a wideout!! If Harvin is standing on the sidelines in street clothes and Ponder sees him im afraid he may throw it to him. ITS PUT UP OR SHUT UP TIME FOR PONDER!!!

Again i like Ponders upside and think he will be a good QB. However,we cannot afford to lose another game like we have the past month. If Ponder struggles in the 1st half give him the hook and put Webb in and see if he can win a game for us!!!

  13. By BlueBird7 on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

At least Webb will try, and he won’t try to kill ants around recievers shoe tops.

Ponder has 20 starts under his belt and its time for him to step up. We dont let Webb play like this and not get the blame. We didnt let Cullpepper, TJack, or Webb play like this and not hold them responsible. NO EXCUSES!!

Im not sure any of those QBs ever played this bad!!! A 100 yards passing. You have the best running game in all of football and you cant pass the ball?? Ponder needs to show me something today. ITS PUT UP OR SHUT UP TIME FOR PONDER!!!

  17. By chris b on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

It kills me when the vikings organiztion says its only ponders 20th start. Thats way more than other WINNING organization would have givin him. To top it off he has played his worse ball the last 5 games. It would be different if he was showing improvement.

  18. By JE on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

Harvin out today may be the best thing for Ponder. If he wasnt we would see the same ole same ole, Ponder 2 yard pass to Harvin all afternoon. Ponder better throw the ball to Simpson 10 times today!!!

  19. By chris b on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

JE I think simpson will have a big day today if poo der can get him the ball.

  20. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

All I want to see today…Is some clean pockets, and Ponder being able to step into some throws down the field…

But have been asking for that same play all season long…

Harvin got open deep last week…But Ponder under threw the ball…

But I want several shots down field…Not just one a game ???

Even though Ponder under threw that pass…It still drew a penalty…And was a positive play…

Kalil, you are an astute guy and a very reasonable guy on thi blog, no doubt, I like your input and enjoy reading your thoughts and strategies while we might not always agree…. BUT, why the hostility for Webb?

Confusing to me because the kid has performed admirably when he has had the chance, actually almost WON a game Ponder “Ponderized” to Detroit last year with some REAL heroics, AND if I am not mistaken in his 4 games of significant playtime, I think he has 2 wins – maybe 1, but THOSE stats measure up as do his p@ssing stats and running stats are off the charts.

IN that Ponder has a higher comp % it is only because the guy has had ample opportunity AND a field that ranges all of 5 yards.

Not sure why you dog Webb when the kid deserves as much a shot as Ponder for all the “good” Ponder has done us.

    Just wondering is all.

  22. By JE on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

Again i do like Ponders upside and think he will be a good qb. However,if he struggles in the 1st half today i hope they pull him and put JWebb in. We just cant afford to lose another game like we have the past month!!

  23. By H.M.G. on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

The team also needs to improve.
    Where is the RUN D?
Why is the OLine suddenly garbage?
Have they heard of a blitz pick up?
Is there a WR not named Harvin on this team?
Why is Rudolph not more involved with the OFFENSE?
Not all of this is on Ponder. Yes he needs to make better decisions. But the team needs to better protect him.

  24. By Vlad19 on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

Like your post Chris, regarding Carlson…. anemic pick-up…. why another “superstar” TE of all things with all the REAL needs we have had… and it turned out to be Carlson and the Magnificent Health Problem! Useless expenditure of dollars and useless waste of uniform. Agreed.

And I can’t remember his first name either!

  25. By Vlad19 on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

JE, please tell me what Ponder’s upside is, and I will watch for it.

With respect, I STILL don’t understand what his supporters SEE in him. What wonderful attributes does he possess? Tools? Toughness? Fearlessness? Leadership?

He doesn’t much score in any of those, and we know his arm is that of a highschooler. So what does he possess that convinces you he will be good one day.

I HOPE you are right and I am just a cynic, but I see he will go the way of Chris Weinke, another brave and brainy QB from Fl St. Retiree after only 3 short years in the NFL…..

  26. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

    Vlad…

I mentioned Monday already…I think the move this week should have been made to start Webb…And let Ponder sit through the bye week…Just give him some time to get his head on straight..
    .

But be a coach…And make a decision…Let Webb get his practice reps in…And get his timing down with the first team…Give Webb a REAL chance to succeed the right way…imo

Just one that believes…A QB should finish what he starts…And is the best way to evaluate how he does…

  27. By JE on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

We have ample tools for Ponder. Simpson, Rudolph, and today JWright. He has the benifit of the most productive runner in all of football in the backfield. NO MORE EXCUSES FOR PONDER. PLAY GOOD FOOTBALL OR SIT ON THE BENCH!!!

Its just like Parkway mentioned earlier…

    Don’t count 4th quarter stats with Ponder…In a blown out game…Exactly correct…

But the same thing holds true…For a QB coming in in relief also…Stats for the entire game is what matters…

    Or should…

We`re gonna slam A.P and Toby right down their throats. Kyle is gonna be open in the middle, and Ponder is gonna hit a couple of biggies downfield. On the flipside, we`re gonna snuff out their run, swarm Stafford, and wreak havoc! Vikings 24- Kittens 17. Skol!

  31. By JE on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

I would like to see Webb get all the snaps during the week instead of just getting tossed in there but if Ponder struggles i still want to see Webb. Its time, its overdue to be honest!!!

  32. By Vlad19 on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

Generally I agree with you and especially so re Webb’s preparations, IF he is going to get real PT, but that is pure speculation due to the stringent support staff give Ponder.

I normally agree with you regarding the QB and NOT changing the man, it pulls at the fabric of a team, no doubt.

BUT, you think the garbage that Ponder is putting out there isn’t pulling on the fabric??? Remember Harvin screaming at Frazier? He wasn’t ordering snow cones, and it wasn’t anyone else underthrowing, overthrowing, misfiring, scrambling uselessly…. it was Ponder. THAT is why the pass game is not working.

So in this instance, the old rule goes out the window for me. I don’t recall seeing ANY QB in Viking history to put together 4 such miserable games as Ponder has, and get away with it.

Frazier risks losing the team leaders, and he already appears to have lost the best of their efforts – they look real average at all aspects right now. ONE affirmative move could change all of that.

OR Ponder throws for 400 and wins a game with final drive TD to anyone not named Harvin!

JE, I meant PHYSICAL tools. I KNOW what talent we have, I have expressed it is one of the reasons I have NO faith in Ponder.

  37. By Nicholas on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

Totally agree JE. We have plenty of talent around CP7…which includes the best running back in the league. O-line isn’t the greatest…but is still no excuse for sub-100 passing yard games.

Cris Carter’s Wobcast explained the situation pretty well. Although your receivers are covered, you still need to figure out ways to hit them when they are covered. Its true that a lot of them have a hard time getting separation…but…you can still make plays when being covered!!

Peterson is amazing i cant remember that last time he had 4 100+ games in a row….man thats incredible….sorry guys alot of u need to really eat your words…..with all the talk of ponder this and musgrave that…..now its not 2 say that we have arrived in any way but we definetely played vikings football and ponder and the passing offense looked pretty sharp. There was a few plays that they would like back but i thought he did a much better job at recognizing the coverage and finding the open man, really spread the ball around well…great win going in2 the bye week and we are now 2-0 in the division…..SKOL VIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  398. By Vlad19 on Nov 11, 2012 | Reply

Gotta admit it vikingfanatic, you called it. No doubt.

Without forgetting Musgrave and his gameplan, moving the ball around was effective! Maybe Pnder learned a valuable lesson – spread the rock around is GOOD for offense and bad for defensive recognition. Let’s hope this “new offesne” has legs.

Winning without Harvin was a doubtful proposition to me because Ponder so relied on Percy. This gives me some hope that we can reconstitute an offense going out. Makes football watching much more fun!
