Pre-Game Card Stunt Among Game Elements Vikings Have Planned For Sunday

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 8, 2012 – 11:03 am

The Vikings, in a joint effort with the NFL and USAA, will host the team’s annual “Salute to Service” military appreciation game on Veterans Day this Sunday, November 11. The Vikings-Lions matchup will be dedicated to all branches of the United States Armed Forces and current and former military personnel serving our country.

As part of the game, each player’s helmet will contain a decal representing one branch of the military. Players will wear camouflage gloves and use camouflage towels, while coaches and staff will don “Salute to Service” ribbons. Game officials will use footballs with the military-themed ribbon decal as well as a special “Salute to Service” coin for the coin toss.

Along with the military-themed gear, the Vikings will use a variety of pre-game, in-game and halftime elements (complete list below) to honor Minnesotans within all branches of military service. The team is also encouraging all fans to arrive early in order to participate in one of the day’s highlights – a card stunt during the singing of the National Anthem.

“The Vikings have the utmost respect for all of the men and women who currently serve – or have served – our country,” said Vikings Vice President of Sales and Marketing/Chief Marketing Officer Steve LaCroix. “Many of our players, coaches and staff have a direct connection to military personnel. This is an opportunity for the team and our fans to show our appreciation for the selfless individuals in every branch of service.”

“One of the most powerful moments of an NFL game is when thousands of fans stand to honor the military and veterans,” said Don Clark, USAA executive director of sports sponsorships and events. “We hope all fans will join us in the card stunt, and then visit millionfansalute.com to download and share photos and create a digital salute to honor the military on behalf of the Vikings.”

The following is a list of many prominent “Salute to Service” game elements that will be employed on Sunday:

• Honorary Viking/Gjallarhorn – Betty Strohfus – Known as Betty Wall during her Army Air Force days, Elizabeth Wall Strohfus was one of just over 1,000 American women who flew military aircraft during World War II.

• Honorary Captain – Sergeant Brian Neill – A member of the Minnesota National Guard for 23 years, Sergeant Brian Neill is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sergeant Neill sustained injuries while deployed from 2005-07 with Bravo Company, 134th Brigade Support Battalion.

• 34th Infantry Division Red Bull Band Performances – The Red Bulls Band will perform during pregame and halftime. The halftime performance will include the display of a large American flag.

• USS Minnesota Recognition – On October 27, 2012, the Navy christened its newest submarine, the USS Minnesota, in Newport News, VA. The Minnesota is the 10th ship of the Virginia Class Submarine and is named in honor of the State’s citizens and their continued support to the Nation’s military.

• Team Introductions – Uniformed National Guard members will line the tunnel exit with the Vikings cheerleaders, while the first and last Vikings players out of the tunnel will carry an American flag.

• Minnesota Joint Forces Color Guard – Sunday’s Color Guard will represent all branches of service.

• In Memoriam – A traditional riderless horse will cross through the end zone during a moment of silence and will remain through the National Anthem.

• National Anthem – National country music recording artist James Otto will sing the National Anthem.

• Card Stunt – During the singing of the National Anthem, the entire stadium will participate in a card stunt presented by USAA. The stunt will display a patriotic message and stars/stripes graphics. The Vikings are asking fans to be in their seats 15 minutes prior to kickoff to ensure full-stadium participation. A photo of a recent card stunt is attached, and media members can contact Renee Rosenow at 612.573.3151 for opportunities to film card stunt set-up this Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

• Game Coin – Game officials will use a Military Challenge Coin, which is traditionally used in the Armed Forces to recognize achievement and performance and was created specifically for the “Salute to Service” game. A photo of the coin is attached.

• Thank You Card – The Vikings, along with the American Legion of Elk River and the Minnesota National Guard will attempt to make the “Biggest Thank You Card in the World” for the troops of Monticello’s 257th Military Police Company who are currently stationed in Afghanistan. The card is 16 feet high and 48 feet across and the goal is to collect 257,000 signatures prior to the return of these deployed troops and be recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records. Fans can sign portions of the card at various locations in the concourse or outside Gate H prior to the game.

DO you think that maybe the extra camouflage is a bad idea… I mean Ponder already can’t find or hit the open reciever… now we are going to camouflage them… yayyy.

Or maybe if I look at it in a good way. Maybe with the extra camouflage on the recievers will actually be able to get open for a second so Ponder can actually throw them the ball… hmmmmmmmmm

    you never know

Since 2007 … QBs with 120 yards or less in a Vikings game with a minimum of 15 attempts

    Ponder … 6x
    TJack … 2x
    Favre … 2x

    Joe Webb .. 1x

    Career comparison as Vikings

    Ponder … 19 starts … 59% completion … 76 QBR … 346 yards rushing
    TJack … 20 starts … 58% completion … 76 QBR … 535 yards rushing
    Webb … 3 starts … 57% completion … 66 QBR … 273 yards rushing

Can we trade Ponder for TJack and add a 3rd round pick?

My fellow Vikings fans … I would like to propose a Constitutional Amendment

    Something like this

If the QB of the Minnesota Vikings has less than 100 yards passing at the start of the 4th quarter AND the Minnesota Vikings have less points than their opponent. The coach must pull the no talent QB and allow Joe Webb a chance to win the game.

    All in favor say Aye

Your stats are marvelous but useless. Webb has three starts and 1 win. He is also seen as not a viable option at QB….why they don’t convert him to WR baffles me, they are ruining his career…….T-Jack really….he was a wreck and could never win the big game. Did you also forget Dec 21, 2008…..10/20 50yds….not in the same league and you are an idiot shaun. Compare QB’s with the same type of potential…..not reject QBs that can’t throw worth anything.

  16. By JDDogg on Nov 8, 2012 | Reply

plus…t jack barely ever threw for 200yrds….check out those stats. Ponder is consistently over 200.

    TJack … 10-10 as a Viking starter
    Ponder … 7-12 as a Viking starter

    Ponder … 19 starts … 59% completion … 76 QBR … 346 yards rushing
    TJack … 20 starts … 58% completion … 76 QBR … 535 yards rushing

Seems the comparison is very good …. Just because Ponder can complete ju’nk pa’sses when trailing in the 4th quarter against prevent defense doesnt make him good.

JDDopeyDuck … just because you dont want to accept reality yet doesnt mean it doesnt exist.

The stats are cool and interesting to look at, but every ones leaning curve and athletic abilities are different. T-Jack reminded me of a robot trying to play QB. To me T-Jack was a 2cd string QB at best!!!! But ” I thing” Ponder has the knack, it just has to be pulled out of him through time. Hopefully it will start flowing this sunday. He just has to let it fly and take the good with the back as he grows in the league.

Put those two on the wish list. Ya know, coaches coach and players play. But sometimes they can get into each others way. Frazier was a player and I believe he will right the Viking Ship. We just need a little tweaking. After all, we did score 20 pts against a good seattle defense and made plenty mistakes.

I know this sounds crazy and will probably never happen, but I would love to see Ponder and Webb run the offense, coming in and out of the game from start to finish. In practice and game time. That would would put alot of pressure on the defense. Heck, throw in a no huddle offense from time to time. Add “AP” into the mix and it would get crazy.

  41. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Nov 8, 2012 | Reply

How about having “guide” wires from the roof of the dome– then when Ponder throws, those up in the box can make sure it reaches the receiver.

    Peterson running or Pnder throwing?
It is a disgrace to have a 1st string QB throw for under 100 yards these days.
This is not the 1972 Dolphins with Bob Griese throwing for 120 yards and Csonka,

We should have kept running the ball in the 2cd half against Seattle. Baited them into stopping the run. They would have over committed to the run and yes even the rookie Ponder would have found a receiver.

  60. By vikes- or - die on Nov 8, 2012 | Reply

All we are is a happy medium team ( if you will, like Ronald Mcdonald) We run and we have a short passing game. We have to committ one way or the other to gain respect and play football.

The thing with ponder that i’ve noticed hasn’t been him making dumb choices it’s been a mechanical issue with his throwing which can be corrected whether or not it will be has yet to be seen. He needs to start planting his feet and driving the throw off his back foot instead of lobbing the ball everywhere fire that ball on a rope once in a while and he could start hitting some of the receivers even in tight coverage why the coaching staff hasn’t been pounding this in his head is beyond me. But until the O line starts giving ponder time to get through his reads he’s gonna be skittish back there and thats not helping there is no confidence in any of the offense when it comes to throwing the ball the last few weeks

And parkway i like your draft ideas except instead of a lb in the first round i say pick up David Amerson our of stanford the guy is just what we need for going up against calvin johnson and the big receivers in chicago twice a year plus he has good speed and is a natural ball hawking cb i think he would be great lined up opposite of chris cook

heres a stunt all you who voted for ol hussain obammy ON NOVEMBER FIRST OF THIS YEAR IRAN USED TWO FIGHTER JETS TO TRY AND SHOOT DOWN AN AMERICAN DRONE OVER INTRNATIONAL WATERS but he forgot to tell all you. this man is weak AND SPINLESS, we will all pay for his lies the vikings should be your least concern

I get the whole ‘give Ponder a chance’ crowd, but I don’t understand why we failed to give Joe a chance, the guy was a third string QB in 2010, behind Favre and T-Jack, which means he got no reps. It was a shocker that we grabbed Ponder in the first place because Webb played well. He can throw and run. He also is illusive and doesn’t get sacked as much as Ponder does. We stunted his growth in 2011 by bouncing him around to different positions. He’s explosive and fires up the team. WHERE WERE ALL YOU EXCUSE GENERATORS FOR WEBB?

  110. By SmileyStar on Nov 9, 2012 | Reply

@Rick Ponder is soft (weak). He is fragile like a china doll. The other teams know this, that’s why they go after the QB. Ponder should know who will be open by the play called and by reading the defense pre-snap. Musgrave has also dumbed down the passing game to get Ponder comfortable. Ponder thinks too much, in other words, his smartness prevents him from getting the ball out of his hands quickly. It’s called over thinking. A QB has to get rid of the ball quickly, in order to slow down the pass rushers.

On the Webb comment, My thoughts also, however when Ponder gets he head handed to him, we might see Webb in action or the other guy. Webb next!

Sunday will be the last game we win this season.

The Vikings need to do screens to A.D. do more post types routes with cuts how about the come back route where you go ten yards then stop turn around we never do those. Many things need to be worked on in the passing game

Bill, you actually think we will win Sunday?

  124. By Rick on Nov 10, 2012 | Reply

Here is a random thought how about a half back option???? hand it off to peterson and let him try to throw it or run whichever he wants to do

  125. By Kathy P on Nov 10, 2012 | Reply

Or, what about using Webb on a slant and let him sling the ball downfield? That’s a novel idea huh? These coaches dont have any imagination, creativity in their minds. It seems they can’t think up some “trick plays” lilke most of the other teams have. Look what happened in the Seattle game when slant thrown to Rice and he placed it perfectly into the endzone to Tate. Sure wish we would we able to have at (1) person who would listen to the fans and try something new because what we are doing right now just isnt getting it done.

Rick: That is dumb dumb dumb. throw it to Webb instead.

  127. By BlueBird7 on Nov 10, 2012 | Reply

Kathy, baby. That pass from Rice to Tate was a repeat of one Favre threw to Rice back when Rice was one of us. Back in the “Ole Days”

  128. By Kathy P on Nov 10, 2012 | Reply

Yes, I know BlueBird7. I have been watching Vikes for 30+ yrs. Im just saying that these coaches just DONT have any imagination. They aren’t capable or unwilling to try and be a little more creative. I dont think its asking too much for someone to “get out of the box” literally and do something different, at least once in awhile.

  129. By BlueBird7 on Nov 10, 2012 | Reply

    Kathy

Yes, me also. I started taping all the winning Viking games in the70′s, 80′s and had quite a collection. Gave them all to my Grandson few years back. Had all the greats on tape when they were players on the team. Even Mike Tice,

I had suggested that on a trick play Ponder lateral to Webb in the backfield and Joe throw it to Harvin or anybody open downfield. After Joe had finished running around he would have an open reciever to throw to. Nobody listioned.

  130. By BlueBird7 on Nov 10, 2012 | Reply

    I meant Jack Del Rio.

  131. By Kathy P on Nov 10, 2012 | Reply

You hit the nail on the head BlueBird7. It’s like the coaches apparently “think” that they know what is best for this team. Too bad, they don’t follow their fans and take some advice, but they think that’s probably below them. They only see what is before them on the field, that’s it!!!

  132. By BlueBird7 on Nov 10, 2012 | Reply

Yes, indeedy what they see is a whole herd of enemy heading for our goal post each time Ponder gives them a free pass!

Whose shoes will mcnab/ponder dust off today?

@ viking bob and @ titus spewfortheus. See yesterdays comments I made to you. This game represented a balance team vs. unbalanced. Ponder threw 3 or 4 past 20 and 7 or 8 past 10. The ball was distributed to about everyone but Tubby G. and Simpson and Jarius got 7 touches. To all you others that predicted another meltdown, see you after the bye week. I will look forward to hearing the Negative diatribe and drivel from you all some more. Go Purple. Go CP. Go TEAM.
