Adrian Peterson Dominates, But Vikings Fall In Seattle

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 5, 2012 – 1:13 am

Adrian Peterson was in prime form on Sunday afternoon, rushing hard and fast for 182 yards and 2 TDs on 17 carries. But his Herculean effort, which included a 74-yard run on the second play of the game, was not enough to overcome several Vikings shortcomings. The end result was a 30-20 victory for the Seahawks over the Vikings at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.

From the opening kick through the 4th quarter, Peterson ran over and danced around a formidable Seattle defense and reminded everyone why he’s the best running back in the NFL. He averaged 10.7 yards per carry and had runs of 15, 16, 24, 28 and 74 yards, breaking multiple tackles on a play with regularity and showing no signs of a player who incurred such a serious knee injury last December.

The Vikings were off to a quick start thanks to Peterson’s 74-yard gallop on the game’s opening series. Two plays later, Peterson plunged in from a yard out to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead. But it unraveled from there, as Seattle RB Marshawn Lynch and rookie QB Russell Wilson capitalized on short fields (thanks to Seattle takeaways) and second chances (thanks to Vikings penalties).

The Seahawks got on the board following a Percy Harvin fumble on the Vikings second drive of the game, with Wilson finding WR Golden Tate for a 6-yard strike. The Vikings punted on their ensuing drive, and Seattle took a 14-7 lead with Wilson-to-Sidney Rice TD strike.

The Vikings responded, with Ponder driving his team 80 yards in 11 plays to watch Peterson score from 4 yards out to tie the game at 14. Blair Walsh tacked on 3 more points with a 36-yard FG that salvaged a drive after a sack on 3rd and 7 from the Seattle 11. The Vikings led 17-14 at that point, but saw that lead disappear after a masterful 12-play, 80 drive by Wilson and the Seattle offense that was capped by another Tate TD reception, the 3rd TD throw of Wilson’s day. The extra point was blocked by Kevin Williams, so Seattle took a 20-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Seattle used a 4-point edge in the 3rd quarter thanks to a Lynch TD (Walsh had a 55-yard FG, too) to take a 27-20 lead into the 4th quarter. The teams exchanged punts at the beginning of the 4th quarter, Seattle K Steven Hauschka split the uprights on a 40-yard try to make it 30-2-, and then the Vikings weren’t able to inch any closer for the remainder of the game.

Wilson finished going 16 of 24 for 173yards with 3 TDs and 0 INTs. Lynch, the NFL’s 2nd-leading rusher behind Peterson, rushed for 124 yards and 1 TD on 24 carries.

While the Vikings were next to unstoppable on the ground, they struggled throwing the ball. QB Christian Ponder was 11 of 22 for 63 yards with no TDs and 1 INT. LBs Jasper Brinkley and Chad Greenway each registered 13 tackles and DEs Jared Allen and Brian Robison were each credited with a .5 sack.

The loss drops the Vikings to 5-4 on the season as they get set this week to host the Detroit Lions at Mall of America Field before heading into their bye week.

    1. Sad to see that the Vikes are one dimensional on offense. Ponder indeed is a second round talent. He needs mentoring.
    2. Even with a good position in the draft, I am not sure that they would get the kind of talent they need at the wide receiver and cornerback positions.
    3. The draft class of 2012 are pretty good. Need to see more of Jarius Wright though.
    4. Need to see the other players in action since this is a rebuilding year.
    5. Vikes traditionally have great players, but they struggle to be a great team.

The Vikings are a 1 player team! Adrian Peterson is all they have! Once again Ponder sucks! How can the Vikings continue to put him on the field passing yet again for under 100 yards and no touchdowns and another pick! The wheels are falling off the Vikings season, and now the toughest part of their season is upon them with little hope of a victory between now and the end of the season!
At least they will have a better shot of acquiring Manti Te o from Notre Dame!

I said at the beginning of the year , 8 – 8 for the year …..what is truly shameful is MRS Ponder is back and just dropped her purse …..could lose 6 games with the balance of the schedule …..I would be very happy at 8-8 ….. what coach Frasier needs to do is show more intensity in his coaching and tolerance and put MR webb in ………..it can not be any worse …..ask AP …Percy already knows …….?

  4. By Todd VanHeuveln on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

I don’t see how the Vikes expect to win with a Quarterback that doesn’t know how to step up in the pocket and throw the ball downfield. Leslie Frasier dug his own grave when he dumped Sage (a decent backup) and kept two backups who wouldn’t be second string QB’s on most teams. It’s pretty sad that the Wilfs don’t get a backbone and hire a qualified coaching staff and QB but wait remember they got their new stadium so I guess they think they can put a subpar team on the field for the next few years. Spend money on another WR as well.

How many more times will Ponder say ” I need to play better”? How many more times will Frazier say ” We need to look at tape and make corrections”? Ponder is not playing better, and Frazier is not making corrections! We are hearing the same excuses over and over, but no results. I can take the losses. I have trouble with the fact that we will not take ownership of the losses, and MAKE CHANGES. We have a horrible attitude of accepting bad football as though it’s no big deal.

PONDER was sooooo bad today and his starting position should be seriously PONDERED and give Webb his chance …he has steadily gotten worse over the last 5 games ………I mean really , the outcome of some of the plays today were outright pathetic… it was hard to watch the 4th quarter and Im a 40 yr die hard fan …..

MIN has become way too “ok” with losing. Frazier says our QB play is not the issue. Ponder says we have a good receiving group. Really? Cause no one else says that. Although the group may be different, we’re seeing the same melancholy attitude about not playing well as when Childress was in charge. There needs to be a fire started in MIN, and it needs to start towards the top and trickle down. I’m sick of watching press releases of shrugging shoulders and “we’ll do better next time” attitudes. It’s a good thing to be a good sport when you lose. It’s a better thing to not accept that you’re failing at your job.

Also watched the falcon game tonight and we are one player away from being just as good …………the quarterback …….u got to love qbs that can get both deep threats involved – jones and White , have running backs that do their job – turner , tight ends in the passing and running game as opposed to what we are accepting ? When was the last time Rudolph stood out , what about simpson or aromishedu , then Jenkins , the list is PERCY and AP , Our O Line deserves Kudos as well ………

I never expected a 3-13 rebuilding team to have a great season this year. But I did expect a better product to be put on the field than MIN has. With our inconsistency and ‘no big deal’ attitudes about poor play, I see more years of failure. Changes MUST be made.

  13. By Utley on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

So everyone wants to put in a QB with no accuracy and that cant read a childs book much less a defense? Lets see how far that gets us… You ride Ponder out until you’re 100% sure he is not the future. No doubt he needs work but come on… We have nothing at wideout and our o-line gives him no time. Defenses took away Musgraves brilliant short passing game and Musgrave has made zero adjustments, Ponder started forcing throws and had some INT’s and now he’s trying to protect the ball to much because our offensive game plan is a joke that consist of horrible wideouts.

McNabb couldnt do anything with this offense, Webb could only run so much before teams shut that down last yr, and now Ponder is struggling.

Get him some wideouts and a new RT/RG, a new offensive coordinator, pickup another QB via Draft or free agency and if Ponder is the same thing this time next yr then make him our backup or cut him loose. He has shown glimpses that he can play. Give him an honest chance to learn and with adequate help.

I hear ya, “J”. I try to be constructive about my feedback, and not call for roster changes or firings. I’ll let the professionals do their jobs. But as a fan, I do want to see some changes. And it is clear that MIN needs some changes.

  15. By Dueyz on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

    @ Utley

You make some pretty solid points. No disputing them. However, if you haven’t seen enough of Ponder to understand why it wont work, you’re a second generation T-Jack fan. Shoring up the O-line and adding deep threat receivers can only help to mask, not improve, Ponder’s weeknesses. “Give him more time” has haunted MIN in too many scenarios where we should’ve moved along.

  16. By Utley on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

    Dueyz,

You’re missing the point, who do we have that will give this team a long term solution? Webb is not the answer. We have to make sure Ponder is not the answer before we draft another QB.. Support him!!!!

  17. By Dueyz on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

We don’t have a long term QB solution right now, and that is the heart of the point. You’re right; Webb is not the answer. You and I differ in that I am already sure that Ponder is not the answer. You prefer we let Ponder do worse things to our team before you concede he needs replaced. Either way, it wont be up to us. And I imagine that the franchise will side with your approach. But I bet I’ll(and those who agree with me about this) be right, unfortunately. You’ll see. Back him as long as you’d like.

  19. By Dueyz on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

BTW….”Support him!!!” What, exactly, should I suppport? His stats/numbers/performances are horrible! Who should support that and why? Your logic is that we should run a bad idea into the ground before we change. Success stories don’t tend to begin with that approach, so I’ll take my chances with a different approach. And I’ll never want to watch my team suffer while we ‘experiment’ with personnel well beyond the failing point.

  20. By vikingsfan1955 on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

I was a big ponder supporter but we still have a chance to stay in the race and 2 games in 3 weeks with less than 100 yards passing says it’s time for a change. Whats wrong with giving webb a shot you can’t say he doesn’t know the offense and can’t say he hasn’t mdone better that ponder has when he had his chance. We should have won at tampa and seattle. Take a chance on a qb change now while we have a real shot at staying in the race. ap and harvin can’t do it all and webb can keep us on the field longer than ponder. If I have changed my mind trust me it’s crunch and change time ponder was in my good graces but I need wins not I need to play better

Percy is a winner, always has been. He’s been the same way from his days back here in va beach to now and he doesnt accept poorly executed football well. I don’t blame him. This stuff is ridiculous! If it’s not a bubble screen or dump off w/ Ponder its an incompletion or a pick. He can’t make medium or long throws and crumbles under pressure. The rest of the nfl has our little 5 yards or less pass offense figured out, yet we still keep pounding away at it

All Ponder keeps saying is we, we, we…we gotta get better, we gotta throw better, bad team loss. Reminds me of a young Romo, throwing the blame all over the place and not taking ownership and correcting your own poor job performance.

Im sticking to my guns on this one. When Harvin is in the backfield, every opposing defense is aware whose getting the ball. I believe Vikings need a better offensive coordinator to win these kind of games. We all should have known that Ponder wouldn’t do that well against this defense. I agree he should have had better results but the receivers aren’t getting open and the O-line isn’t picking up the blitz packages they throw at us. Fire Bill Musgrave 2012

  28. By måns on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Trade Percy before he leaves via free agency. Get some draft picks. Pick up Wide reciever, Guard and corner. Then get a veteran QB that can manage a NFL game that Ponder Obviously can’t. I don’t think Webb is the answer but he hasn’t really been given a real chance even though he has been playing well when he has been put on the field. Play Webb for the rest of the season and find out what he got before you go pickup a veteran like Jason Campbell or Kyle Orton.
    What else to do?

Hard to watch as our team has struggled so much over the past few games, but I will always be a die hard Vikings fan no matter what. I agree with some that Ponder is responsible as the QB but I also think that our receivers aren’t stepping up and the right side of the offensive line is having a hard time with protection. These are two easy things to correct and if the o-line can protect then the receivers can get open.

Ponder is not the guy gee was handed the spot because of draft position and he’s unproven, the only things he’s proving is that he don’t belong in this league. 60 yards passing are you serious even high school qb’s do better then that, its clearly time for change if not then Frazier needs to get fired he’s to player friendly this is the first coach I’ve ever seen in vikings history who enjoys losing even Childress was better then that.

This team needs so much help.
To start with a QB who can actually throw downfield
A WR who can spread the field.
A DL who can replace Kevin Williams who is ready for retirement.
Lots of help on the OL.
    A coach with some passion

  35. By vikingbob136 on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Ponder is probably not the answer but they are trying to get a larger body of work before they go in a different direction.
The team can’t make any desperate decisions because they will be criticized
all the way out of their jobs.
At this point in the season, there aren’t many teams we can beat, but does it really matter?
We aren’t going to the playoffs anyway.

It wiil be a shame if Percy bolts and plays somewhere else next year. But i can see that happening because he doesn’t want to wait another 3 years while the Vikes acquire the right players through the draft.
    So disappointed

Ponder has lost whatever confidence he had in the first few games. They say that “if you a whip a horse long enough that it’s spirit will be defeated”. This is what has happened to Ponder. Although, I have to say that the Offensive Line still isnt providing enough protection. When your QB gets sacked (4) times in a game, something is wrong. Yes, some of it might be Ponders fault, but we have a “lazy, lackadasical offensive line. They are very slow, cant read blitzes when they are coming at all, and just plain aren’t doing their job. How does one go about “fixing” that? Maybe we need to start playing “ironman football” like in highschool?
Substitute some Defensive players ,that are big/quick to protect the QB and bench the Offensive Line totally. One thing that did improve yesterday was not too many 10-15yrd.pickups in the middle of the field. Still getting way too many penalties these last few games and that will be a work in progress for the new guys on defense.Jared Allen, although he puts his heart/soul into each and every play, would be more effective as a middle line backer in this current scheme that they are playing. Most of the time he is double-teamed and you can see he is very frustrated. And I really felt sorry for Percy yesterday. He just kept shaking his head but kept up the good fight, even though he was injured. NOONE is going to want to play on this team if they continue to go down this downward spiraling path they are on. THINGS NEED TO CHANGE, and one of them is to find a NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR who knows what the heck he is doing. He has only a half of sheet of paper for his plays!!!!!! We need someone like M.Tice who is aggressive and knows what he is doing. Sorry for all the ranting and probably most will not agree with my post, but SOMETHING/ANYTHING is better than what we have right now.

Man, i agree!!!this is the NFL!!!we don’t have time to hope it works out.coaching and schemes suck! can’t we at least work Webb in a little? I never expected us to win this division this year but with the last 4 games to look at,we are getting less competitive by the day.coaches and Ponder looking like deer in the headlights to me and getting paid for it!!!!

AP is the leagues leasing rusher and a lot of that is due to how good our O line is, stop blaming the line its obvious Ponder is confuse out their he holds on to the ball to long, doesn’t know how to step in the pocket, and he couldn’t tell where a blitz is coming from even if the defense told him this guy needs to go. Your receivers are only as good as your qb so stop blaming the receiver. I see that Miami kid slinging it for 200 yards and i don’t even know his receivers names, Brady did it in New England.

  41. By vikingfanforlife on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Who is responsible for setting up the offense to slow down the blitz. That’s where the problem starts. Musgrave is the problem not Ponder

what if???….Go back to the 2005 draft-instead of drafting troy williamson and erasmus james ( major busts), the vikings drafted aaron rodgers, roddy white in the 1st rd & vincent jackson in the 2nd rd. and then along comes ap in 2007. what a total missed opportunity!!!

  43. By Muskyfever on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

First of all AP is clearly a beast and cleary we should all be feel lucky to have such a monster on our side.

I felt bad in the game for Harvin last night, he was clearly upset with how we were playing and he should be cause that was awful.. I can’t remember when it happened but Ponder missed him wide open and overthrough rudolf on a play. Harvin was not happy, he also freaked out about that missed bubble screen that our noob QB apparently can’t throw either.

I said before this game that we were not going to be able to throw the ball barley at all. I knew what was going to happen… But I thought that Ponder would at least put up a fight, He rpetty much went up to the Seahawls bench in a maids outfit and handed the Hawks our loss on a silver platter.

I do not expect Ponder to get pulled for the rest of the season, Frazier needs to stick to his guns and we need to see what Ponder does at the end of the year. I say get rid of both, but we will see.

Frazier is in a tough spot right now, make a change for Webb and you pretty much throw the season away, tell you “long haul” QB that he is not what you thought, and possible lose repect in the locker room….. OR keep Ponder, still lose some respect in the locker room, stick to your guns and possible risk your job at the end of the season, theres more to it than that I just don’t feel like typing all of it….

I’ll be supprized if we get 3 more wins by the end of the year..

  44. By RealViking on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Actually that’s the quarterbacks job the coach gives a play to execute but if the quarterback see the defense showing blitz he’s allowed to audible and adjust to the blitz. You see good qb’s do it all the time.

Who knows better how to play the other teams in this division ???…

  46. By måns on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Offcourse there’s many problems on this team but it starts with Ponder!
Do people think that all the great Qb’s in this league have great O-lines and Wide recievers? NO!
If Ponder can’t find anyone or the protection breaks down and he can’t find anything fine. But the problem yesterday was that he was afraid of passing the ball more then 5 yards down the field.
And when he did he flat out missed his target. I think Ponder has been given to many chances now to not be put on the bench. Webb can’t do worse. And if nothing is done to atleast try to turn this around this season is more then doomed.
Even though webb isn’t an superb passer he can at least be a spark that gets this team rolling again.

  47. By Craig on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

They say that benching Ponder will do nothing to help him improve. I say who cares if he improves or not. he shouldn’t have been drafted by this team. he is a 3 round talent and Back-up at best. Andy Dalton looks pretty good at this point doesn’t he. They hitched their wagon to a player that isn’t qualified to be a starting QB, simple. Put Joe Webb in and plan for the future to find a new QB to take us forward. the fans deserve better than Ponder and his tired refrain of ” I need to play better”. weak!!!!!

You know, I never believed that putting Webb in over Ponder was a good idea. My arguments were, That Ponder is the General and if you take the general away from the soliders they will not know where to shoot. But I think our guys would shoot just fine without him… Then I would think that Webb can’t throw as well… Well PONDER CAN’T THROW EITER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point, what can we lose?? A passing game?? what passing game??? I think If Ponder puts up any bad number next week….ANY… then we should make the switch during the bye and after to see what MBT or Webb can do… Something to light a fire under these guys, cause this lackedaisical approach to football and our “lack of passion” coach is about all I can take without totally losing my mind

  52. By måns on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Play Webb to see what he really got through many concecutive games, keep Ponder. Pick up Jason Campbell out of free agency and have another good draft next year.
This was probably what everybody expected from the Vikes.. It’s just tough for us fans to see them perform as they did at the beginning of the season and then go from that to this..

  53. By gregg on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

c’mon man!- yeah, that’s probably true, and i guess we should be happy that they did make a few smart decisions on draft days ( ap, percy, kalil, smith). i just look back at that draft in particular as a huge wiff-i don’t think any of the players we drafted in 2005 are even in the nfl anymore.

  54. By RealViking on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

I like the way you think give MBT or Webb a chance its not like their replacing a good player. Honestly Frazier won’t bench Ponder because he doesn’t wanna show it was a mistake drafting him but every coach no when its time to move on. We saw Childress fall in love with T-Jack but knew to move on to Favre because Jackson was a bust just like Ponder.

When I here someone say… well it could be worse we could be 3 and 6 right now… OK… yeah your right… but I would rather be 3 and 6 and know what is going on with my team, then to be given all this early hope… and just when I am about to take off and run with this hop you have given me, you RIP it away, laugh in my face and tell me your just kidding…. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, to all of you “were doing better than last year” . whoopdi DOOOO!

bottom line here is we can’t just win with peterson, and ponder has lost it or something is wrong with him but either way if you don’t do something with ponder, SEASON IS OVER MAN !!! we have way to many hard teams left to play 2 with the bears and 2 with the packers and ponder just isn’t getting it done anymore…

being a vikings fan is a frustrating rollercoaster. it’s hard to understand why this team in particular can look so inept and worthless one minute, look like world beaters the next, and if they do come within inches of a championship, they blow it. it’s as if it’s a cursed organization. hopefully ( and i say this every year) they will learn from their mistakes/ bad decisions and build a team with a capable coaching staff and finally win a championship.

Well, duly noted is the fact we have a number of regular posters using strange names, resulting in straight off the cuff remarks on the team!

I have a few myself. Only two persons showed up for the game.

Peterson and Harvin. The rest sit on the sideslines watching the Seahawks fly by.

One trick play looked familar. Wilson to WR Rice, Rice passing for TD.

It was mentioned before on this blog that a Ponder to Joe Webb, Webb to Harvin would work. Favre used it one time with then Viking Rice.. Same play.

At the end, with 8 minutes left in the game, why wasn’t Webb put in like the Washington and Detroit games. But NO. let Ponder lose another one.

  67. By RealViking on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

I remember when we had the best passing offense in the NFL what happened to that. My expectations are always high for the Vikings no matter what an analyst says.no one expected the Colts to be playing this good what do they have that we don’t have? A good qb who’s actually good at the position. As long as Ponder is starting for us i guess this is what us fans have to get used to. Don’t get me wrong Ponder was a smart college student but this is the NFL man not a college class Ponder is not made for this.

i can’t justify waiting for a subpar qb to hopefully develop when you look around the league and see rookie qb’s having consistently good games, this pick stunk from the getgo-time to get back to basics and putting in the backups to see what we have going forward-cause ponder is just a white t-jack. and frazer is a black chili

Antonio, I think part of the problem started in week 7, against Arizona. Ponder threw for 58 yrds and Peterson had a big day and we won. If you look back at Ponders games with big yardage, it’s because we had a nice lead or we were way behind and defenses were playing soft.

I like Ponder, and I’ll give him one more game, but if he plays poorly, I would play both Webb, who I don’t think is the answer and MBT.

The sad part of this whole Q.B. situation is Ponder was doing fine in the first 5 games, everyone has to agree he wasnt losing games for us then,,,,Our question all of us should ask is what happened between then and now, what has caused Ponder to just completely lose all his confidence???I will have to say it is not all Ponders fault, something has his confidence in the ground, and it seems each week to get worse,I wish I had the answer for that one question, but we as fans dont play each weekend,we dont practice daily with these guys so I can firmly say none of us have the answer…..Question 2 is very simple ,How do we run the ball each week so well and teams know what were doing, putting 8 and 9 men in the box to stop us yet cant? BUT we cant throw a short pass over the line to get 5 or 10 yards,,just cant do it….dont make any sense does it?Again I cant seem to even get any idea of why this is all coming down on us this way,,Ponder has shown he can manage a game ,but why the big change over the past 3 games? why?this goes so much deeper than just Ponder losing his total confidence…..Just not really much more to say ,but hopefully this team figures it out soon…..

A couple of questions is the Vikings base talent base so mediocre that it seems the stars have to align properly for them to have a breakout game, with of course the exception of AP, this guy IS the team along with Harvin. It almost seems like the rest of the team are not up to the task. I wonder what kind of culture the coaches have been promoting because there is not much fire in this team. It’s almost like they’re borderline farm club to the NFL. I believe the coaches will keep Ponder in at the expense of the fans and the rest of the season and they’ll hope something magical happens next season, but so far he looks like the next Romo or Sanchez. Frazier looked perplexed in the last post game show wondering both what to tell the media and how to fix his problem.

I don’t care how we did last year. This is a new year and rebuilding season or not we’ve seen what we are capable of. We expect more from a team that showed promise at the beginning of the year. We are not looking like a rebuilding team now. We look like a good team that’s losing control and not even close to regaining it especially with no changes.

  85. By Tom on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

What gets me is the fact that AP is playing phenomenal and with teams stacking the line with 8-9 player fronts! With this being done, that leaves downfield open for quarterbacks to have a field day since defenses are always gearing up for the run. Why does Ponder continue to suck with this scenario. Just think what elite quarterbacks like Brady, Rogers and Manning could do and he points they could put up on the board with the number #1 back in the league as part of their repertoire!!!!!
Ponder and the coaching staff don’t get it, and because of this the Vikings can conceivably lose the rest of their games this season!
To be honest with you, fellow Vikings fans, this may not be a bad situation to be in. This would give the Vikings a lower draft pick. Also, I would not be impressed with a 500 record +\_ a win. First of all, that doesn’t get the Vikings into the playoffs, and secondly, it would drop the Vikings down in the draft order, potentially taking the Vikings out of having little chance of getting Manti Teo , linebacker from Notre Dame!

Zygi and Spielman are not making any comments this season…About players or coaching…

I think both are just silently allowing Frazier and Musgrave to dig there own graves this season…

Poor play calling…Lack of leadership on the sidelines, and out on the field of play…And again this year going without making any player changes from week to week…

Would it hurt to play J Wright for Jenkins…Or Audie Cole for Brinkley ???…How about Summers from the practice squad, for an invisible Aromashudo…Or G Schwartz for a struggling C Johnson ???…

    I blame coaching…

Discipline does not exist, Ponder is continuous bad mistakes, we want them to win not watch a quarterback develop, web should be in there. No doubt the beginning Ponder is who we wanted and he earned it, not to loose faith but this is ridiculous, why isn’t Webb playing? at least until he starts making bad plays? its in the “COACHING:”

Ok, now that I have had some time to calm down after yeterday’s game, I have a few thoughts.

1- Ponder’s lack of confidence is like him wearing blinders. He can’t see the open man. There were open men yesterday to throw to several times.
2- The O-line let Ponder get chased around way too much.
3- The defense played soft against the run. Too many slants that let the ball move forward quickly and often.. Even the commentators said stuff about that.
4- The play calling the second half was pitiful. Peterson was great, but when it counted they should have stayed with him rather than let Ponder throw.

Summary: Ponder needs to suck it up or sit for a bit. Coaches need to CHANGE UP THE PLAN. PERIOD. We need to see more receivers. Activate Wright for heaven’s sake. Use Rudolph in the scheme more often. Put Audie Cole in for defense as well. Oue defense needs to play tight, forward and strong to the QB. We have some up-taped players on this team that can make a difference. Our secondary were still giving up some small 5- yarders but they did ok yesterday. That is a sign that there is not much difference without Cook. Sad, but true. Finally- I have been pretty verbal about letting this team rebuild and grow. I have been telling people to give Ponder a chance. That chance is fizzling and the rebuilding just got more messy. Where i thought at least our D line was going to play havoc and our O-line was going to give Ponder the time to throw, I now question these areas as well. I am hoping to see us win some more games, but teams have got the Vikings figured out because the one-dimensional game plan. Our OC is a big issue here. What I truly want to know is where is the “Gelling” we saw with this team earlier this year? Does Winfield need to make another speech or what???

Does anyonelse watch the blank stares of the Offensive Line when the other teams Defense blitzes and Ponder gets sacked or is it me? They just meander around like a bunch of “stick figures” without a purpose it seems. One would think that they really could care less whether or not they are performing the job that they are getting paid to do! It’s too bad that they couldnt get docked some pay for lack of performance. Maybe then, they’d get some fire in their line. As many people have stated before; we are TIRED of hearing the same old excuses week in and week out. “We gotta play better, we gotta work on this or that”. SOMETHING ISN’T WORKING and the coaching staff ISN’T doing anything to fix that in my thinking. If it starts with the coaching, or lack thereof, then we aren’t going to be able to move forward, EVER!!

I know it’s painful to watch..but we should lay off Ponder, at least for now..I know he’s an easy scapegoat, but this Viking ship has way more than just one leak. There are two big problems the way I see it: First, Frazier and Singletary are under the delusion that they are one adjustment away from having a shut-down defense like the Bears and they develop game plans with that in mind…Let’s compare the Vikings and the Bears..Ponder is a 2nd year QB who’s been sacked 23 times with a QB rating of 82. Jay Cutler is a vet qb, has a strong arm, has been sacked 28 times with a QBR of 85 and yet his team is 7-1. The difference is, of course, that the Bears go out and play consistently great defense-at home or away- and we don’t. We either give up hard earned leads to easily or fail to stop other teams in critical situations. If our coaching and defense were worth anything at all, we should have at least 2- 3 more wins vs the rookie qbs we’ve played (Wilson, Luck and RGIII). The second major problem is obviously the OL’s pass protection. Everybody knows it’s easier to learn how to run block than pass protect and with AP running behind you, he doesn’t need that much space to break one. But you can’t give up 4 sacks a game and expect your 2nd year QB to perform miracles.

Frazier should play the “injury card” this week…Ponder has a sore knee…Claim his knee flared up in practice this week..Use that and sit Ponder this Sunday…Play Joe Webb…Ponder then has another bye week to get some time away from the game…

    Ponder is rattled…Confidence is low…

Frazier can still say and claim Ponder is the Vikings starting QB…And start Webb this Sunday…Ponder is thinking to much…Ponder is hurting physically and psychologically right now…

If you are going to put in Webb…Start him…

Give Ponder a few weeks off…

If Webb plays really well…Give Webb another week against the Bears…

Point is…Ponders knee could stay “sore” for a few weeks…(if need be)…And would not hurt the team at this point…And the coaching staff could see, if Webb has anything he can do better right now to help the team…

    HERE IS A CHILLING RESUME:

Musgrave began his coaching career in 1997 as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders. That season, under the quarterbacking guidance of Jeff George, led to a seventeenth-place offensive finish for the Raiders. The Raiders finished 4-12.

One year later, relieved of his duties in Oakland, Musgrave moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles to serve as quarterbacks coach. With Bobby Hoying, Koy Detmer, and Rodney Peete sharing quarterbacking duties, the Eagles finished 3-13 and 30th in the league in offense.

One year later, relieved of his duties in Philadelphia, Musgrave accepted the quarterbacks coaching position with the Carolina Panthers. Led by Steve Beuerlein, the Panthers finished fourth in the NFL in offense with an 8-8 record. Musgrave’s performance, and head coach George Seifert’s growing unease with offensive coordinator Gil Haskell’s seemingly uneven performances, led Seifert to sack Haskell and promote Musgrave to offensive coordinator in 2000.

Musgrave’s promotion in Carolina was short lived, however, as Seifert sacked him a mere four games into the 2000 season. That dismissal came only after Seifert called Musgrave to the floor and chastised his play-calling in front of the team.

After his dismissal from Carolina, Musgrave moved on to the University of Virginia where he served as Al Groh’s offensive coordinator for two seasons, with mixed results, despite having Matt Schaub as his starting quarterback.

Subsequent coaching positions in Jacksonville, Washington, and Atlanta, led to similar results, with his final season in Atlanta proving his most resume-worthy, mentoring quarterback Matt Ryan to continued improvement

I didnt think we had a shot at making the playoff when the season started, and I definately dont now.I am getting sick of Ponder saying “I just need to play better” DUH!You can’t play any worse, can you? I would hope not,I don’t see us winning anymore games.Detroit is getting better and we are getting worse, and there is no way we can even compete, against Chicago or Green Bay without a quarterback.I was a Ponder supporter and I’m a vikelifer, but we can’t compete at this level with a QB that gets under a 100 yards.COME-ON-MAN get real.I think it all starts with the coaching staff,I was a Frazier supporter too but not now we need somebody that hold the players responsible, not I need to look at the tape and see where we need to get better,I’m no coach and neither is anybody on this page but we seem to know what to do.
1.Get a QB that can make some plays, and can throw.
2.Get a coaching staff with some imagination and heart.
    3. Get your playmakers on the field and give them the ball ie..Webb,Harvin, give AP the ball,he got more yards than Ponder did on one play.
I will always support my team but I’m tired of losing and tired of the coaching staff doing nothing about it

52 years as a die hard Vikings fan and I have lived through many major disappointments and I am a Vikings fan from Arkansas. I became a fan because of what I saw in the team their 1st year in the league and I also liked their horns reminded me of Thor of which I was also a fan. I have been a Ponder supporter and I have made suggestion that he really should study tape on Payton Manning becasue he really don’t know how to read defenses.

Sure we have problems on the OL but the main problem is Ponder’s inability to read the defenses and make adjustments. Also a big part of the problem is pass play calling by Musgrave, also when Ponder is afforded the time to go down field, he often under-throw or over-throw the receives or get the pass intercepted.

I heard an interesting point from the commentators about Atlanta’s coach Mike Smith, whenever someone commits a penalty, he calls them out in team meetings and he keeps a graph of them. I truly agree with everyone concerning Ponder’s and Frazier’s pressers, no one is taking the blame and they don’t seem to care win or lose, one thing is certain unless changes are made, we will be lucky to win anymore games this season, nuff said!!!!!!!!

But I also believe if Ponder makes just one mistake, in front of the home crowd next Sunday…He will have the Boo Birds raining down all over him in his home stadium…And that will not help anything either…

So to do the “politically correct” thing for this Sunday…

Frazier can say Ponders knee has had some swelling in it…And sit him down for one game…So fans can see what Webb can do ???…

The worst part about Ponder is that the things he was SUPPOSED to be the best at is where he is the worst at right now.

He was touted as this super smart guy who had these intangible mental aspects of the game down and should be able to read blitzes and defenses and use that to his advantage since he doesn’t have the arm talent of an elite QB.

Yet he is acting like a very unintelligent individual making terrible decisions that turn into INTs and can’t make an audible or protection or play change to save his life.

It is absolutly insane to keep a player in the game when his performance is as bad as Ponders. I seriously think someone slipped him something in a drink 4 games back. He has went from a smart QB to a total idiot for no reason. Joe web would at least cause opposing defences to have to take into account his running capability. It would be impossible for Joe to be worse at reading defences and throwing the ball. Put Joe in!! and send Ponder to a doctor and get him examined to see why he became an idiot overnight. Ponder has seriously lost it upstairs. I thought the team always came first so why is this coach putting Ponder ahead of the team? He needs to be benched and sent a message that this level of play will get you nothing but a bench seat on the sideline. And until he can prove he has found his brain again leave him there. If Web cannot do better, How about reuniting Harvin and Tebow? I’m sure the jets would trade him for the right price. I would even see if Nelson from the gophers would like to try starting a game or two. We NEED TO CHANGE something, to continue on with no changes should not be an option. Being pals I think Rudolf drank the same thing 4 games back as Ponder did because he too suddenly acts like there is something missing upstairs and can’t catch a ball even if it hits him in the hands or chest. You don’t think NFL teams would stoop so low as to drug someone on an opposing team? Need I say bounty? Its a dog eat dog competition out there worth millions, 1 pill would be all it would take to better your odds against a team who was once 4-1.

Seriously Anyone who thinks that Speilman will draft a QB, you are giving the impression that you have not ever heard speilman talk or know his philosophy, Speilman Drafted Ponder, make sure you understand that it wasn’t the vikings it wasnt leslie it was Speilman. Ponder can put up 60 for the rest of the games and Speilman wont do a thing, and this isn’t a knock on spielman its just that his whole reputation as a decision maker starts and ends with Ponder. They will keep playing him cause this is his second year and he is young. Ponder has his limitations more than you would hope for the 12th pick in the draft, but no matter how much you all want to “be a female dog” about it No one is making a change at QB this year or Next. We have to develop a bettter planin the short passing game to balance the run, Ponder will never be the QB to throw deep ball after deep ball but he can throw on time when he is visibly frightened out there. Long story short we are all expecting more of Ponder and some of us love Joe , me included, but it would be a failure to the franchise if speilman was in his office reading this blog, because you can not diverge from what you believe if your trying to build a consistent winner.

While Ponder is not very good, he is still the best QB on the team. There is a reason Webb is a back-up. I do think Webb needs to be on the field, as he is a good athlete, but he is not a QB option. They may as well stick with Ponder until another decent QB comes along. In that time the Vikes need better pass protection, even AP is horrible at this, better recievers with some height and speed, and some change in coaching. Frazier and Musgrave just are not that impressive.

  242. By vikesince69 on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

What this team really displayed yesterday is that they are very immature. Immature and young are different in that a team can be young but demonstrate adequate maturity on the field. This team does not demonstrate maturity and you can see it with outburst like Percy performed yelling in Frazier’s ear yesterday. I dont know if this coaching staff has that ability to get these guys there or not with respect to maturity. I mean look at Ponder’s development…the guy is actually regressing week by week. He looks lost in the pocket and the defense all of the sudden cannot tackle in the open field. I dont know but there seems to be something missing on this team in the form of leadership and it shows up in the fact this team is not getting better, in fact they are getting worse. Its both coaching and players but it all has to start with coaching because other teams have caught up to the Vikes quick start playbook and the vikings are not adjusting properly. Time to look towards 2013 season because the Pack, Bears and Lions are all peaking and the Vikes are sliding backwards at break neck pace!!!

Call up Sage Rosenfels… He at least he had an arm and was heads up about geting rid of the ball. He also has a rapport with the guys….he has expereince too. Why not? They won’t start Webb or MBT because Ponder is “The guy” On a positive note- did you see how Kluwe kicked this week? He hit some great punts. The fact that he had some pressure this week made a difference, don’t you think?

  244. By James on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

I can’t believe how wob and other people are still standing up for ponder! So you guys not see that he is not a good qb. The excuses of ‘oh he’s still young’ should not be use. Look at rg3, luck, and tannelhill. Better yet, look at Andy dalton, Blaine, and jake. They all perform better than ponder. Now you going to use the excuse that we don’t have WR? Well, why didn’t we trade for one or sign one. Obviously nobody wants to win around here except Adrain, Percy, greenway, Allen, Winfield…and some! Please don’t come up with excuse, we all know ponder can’t play. For example the one play in the fourth last night, Percy was wide open running that long drag and ponder decides to throw it to Simpson where earl almost picked it up. Now lets get to the play calling! With three min in the fourth, everybody knows you’re not running the ball but yet the vikes kept running play action! Then comes ponders int! Are you kidding me? Harvin is hurt, everyone knows that but yet you called a nine route for Percy to run? Wow

  245. By David Plowman on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

5-11 is the best the vikings are going to do this year. If Eli Manning were the QB here his stats would look the same as Onder. Here are the vikings issues.

    1. Coaches that cannot coach. No adjustments, the same old plays time and time again. Silly penalties come from lack of coaching and discipline. Handoff up the middle, handoff to the left, bubble screen and then punt. AWESOME playbook.

    2. Every tema in the NFL knows how to play the vikings. Abuse the vikings DB’s and play 8 in the box on defense because the vikings receivers cannot burn you deep.

3.. Sure Ponder can play better, but the coaches need to coach better. Webb is not do much better.

    4. When Percy is gone next year the play calling will be this. Handoff up the middle, handoff to the left, handoff to the right. PUNT. AWESOME BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Spencer…

I am not against Webb…Just don’t think Webb can get WR’s anymore open than they are now…I don’t think Webb improve the play along the O-line…Or improve the play calling from Musgrave…etc…

But if some see Webb as some hope yet, for this season…That’s fine…

I just personally don’t see it…I see way more problems on this team, than just the QB play right now…

  247. By Muskyfever on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

    I agree with you OTK.

It may give a spark, but I don’t think we would win games if Webb was in there over Ponder, but it may make the rest of the team look around and change what they are doing if… jsut if…. they thought….. if even for a second……… that our coaches were willing to do anything to win as they should be…. then maybe it would light a fire under some rear ends to get this thing moving….

But would Webb out perform Ponder….? probably not… Especially since nothing else would change. Musgrave will still suck at calling plays, except now it would be worse cause Webb has maybe…maybe half of the “small” play sheet memorized. so 5 instead of Ponders 10 plays can be called. The O-line still can’t block, the D is still playing soft and AP and Harvin are still the only Offensive weapons on this team.

I hope with all of my being that we pay Percy and he decides to stay here. But honestly If I was him……………. I would leave. But he will never be as good somewhere else as he is here. We need him here, other teams would just use him. But he is a get the ball 15 times a game type of guy, thats what he wants. If he decided to leave, we would not get even any where close to the production that he gets here. Not even close. PAY PERCY!!!!!!!!

    1. When a team gets better, as the season progresses…

    3. When teams can make adjustments to game plans at half time…

I don’t think I have ever seen such incompetence in a downfield passing game. OPEN receivers are not seen, and Ponder busts the pocket early and runs for 3… he is afraid.

What’s more, much of his sack pressure is HIS doing because he has tendency to step right NO MATTER what, doesn’t use the left pocket or escape routes. And the WORST offense is in his fear, he drifts beyond the top of pocket and exposes himself to the high rush, then busts it to run, LOOKING like there was protection breakdown when it wasn’t.

Change this guy’s heart of paper and he MIGHT be able to turn into a QB. But he will NEVER be a good one.

“I just have to keep moving past it”…….

Does this speak to the CURE or the disease? Is it temporary or permanent?

Frederick, hitting this one on nose is not brilliance, it is only admission and awareness, but thanks.

But I will say, I have been saying move past the illusion that Ponder is a NFL QB SOONER than later, and saying it since last year.

Ponder can’t read D’s, he is panicky in pocket, quick to flush, can’t pick-up the blitz (that is not always a pass blocking issue as some fans think), can’t find the hot read, he hasn’t that intangible that good to great players have – called “getting it done” and lastly, he is a calculus guy not a visceral guy. Be football player first and then use your brain, he might be successful. But Ponder thinks himself into trouble and decides who he wants to throw to when standing over center and never picks up scheme or change of cover….. DOOMED failure and easy to see.

We just had too many fans who loved Ponder’s FAKE stats in the first 4 games of season. I remind all, he had 7 dropped interceptions those first 4 games, one was a pock-6 that we ended up getting end of half FG (10 pt swing vs SF). Ponder was LUCKY. We are seeing the real Ponder and fans of the guy think he is slumping…. aint so. It is Ponder.

Actually the problem with Joe Webb is that he is too tall, too fast, jumps too high, too strong, too agile, too good of an athlete, and his skin is too dark for him to ever be an NFL quarterback!

    @iaVike,

No, you are correct the problems with the Vikings offense are not all Ponder’s. But when the Offense is not playing well, it’s easiest to just change the QB. Take some pressure off the young man. Perhaps he can start again next year, or even later this year.

Currently, he is part of the problem!!! 120 yards in 2 games???

  298. By Vlad19 on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

iavike, that play you refer to, please replay on vid…. Ponder had an entire LEFT side of pocket, about 3-4 yards worth of room to step to. Fans think “Stepping up” means ONE directional thing – it doesn’t. A REAL QB sees what Fusco had – while pushed back a couple yards he still had engagement and control of that defender – Ponder slides left he has the time to throw – period.

Instead, Ponder, being the weak and entirely “right-handed” QB (meaning he thinks right, flushes right and likes to run and throw right in any given situation) Ponder steps RIGHT INTO the sack. NOT Fusco’s fault, those guys are handing 350 lob athletes, Ponder only needs to see or FEEL the pocket presence…. that is an integral necessity to any QB.

It, like many things, is lacking in Ponder’s game.

Vikings loose all the game from next week on words.. So COACHES.. plan for NEXT season as you do not have any choice. Look at PONDER throwing the ball. I never saw in my life time that a QB throw the ball up in the air and ask anybody can catch, No power in it. BIG time failure QB we have in MN. I am in TEXAS and paying extra money to watch the VIKING game but no use and no satisfaction at all. COACH should have put Joe WEBB during the 4 th quarter to try some thing else. WEBB has power in his arms and can run the ball like a RB. Common man..
Only thing that we should all happy about the truth that we already won 5 games as everyone predicted us 3 games. So every one be happy and look for next season of football with new QB or Joe Webb.
Look at the 1 st year QB..? Everyone is playing like a champions. If we would have one QB like that then it would have been different story this year.

GB and Chicago will have less chance to go to playoffs.

I like the idea kalil, and while it is a drastic step, the thing I hate about Musgrave is not a “boring and predictable gameplan” as many declare – and yes, while it is those things, it is primarily because it is a gameplan around a guy no one in the Org has any confidence can open up downfield game – so rubs and picks and bubble screens is all we get.

What I can’t STAND about Musgrave is his intentional obfuscation in pressers, his contempt of the press asking REAL questions about schemes… and Musgrave acts like they should have some PHD to be discussing offense with HIM… the Great Oz…… Being all taciturn is fine if you are a rockstar, but helk on wheels Musgrave, you are an offensive coordinator of the worst offensive scheme in all the NFL.

You are only LUCKY you have Peterson, the Monster. You would be shoveling sheet somewhere if not for Peterson. Give the haughty, untouchable “genius” thing a rest – you are a putzzzz if anything.

Yes, bring in Favre. He will also teach Ponder a little about gumption, little about guts! Can only help!

I was unsure of Ponder last season from what I had read about him – arm strength & accuracy. I was not really impressed with him last season but chalked it up to being a rookie. I started to feel positive about him in the first 4 games – great accuracy & did not turn the ball over, looked comfortable in the pocket. Since game 5 after he threw his first pick he then reverted back to last season’s play & looked scared in the pocket. Then on thursday’s game when they showed his stats of being good up to 5 yards & how things went way down hill after 5 yards & how Sunday’s game when he could have thrown a td to Harvin it was underthrown. The o-line is doing a good job giving him protection (though there were a few busted plays) he needs to get the job done. I do agree that he should continue the season cause it if evident the Vikings are not going to make the playoffs & really evalute him. There is no reason he should be playing this bad with the talent on this team. time for him to step up or step out.

meswant, yo missed my posts and most of the first 4 games obviously – but Ponder had 7 dropped interceptions in the first 4 games – one vs SF was pick-6, in which we ended up w FG — that is 10 pt swing. Ponder benefitted by opponents lack of execution…. turned into favorable numbers….. but it is a farce and WHY I do not watch football to look at stats only. Look at performance of duty and you will make more accurate predictions of what and where a guy will be in another year or two.

todavia podemos pasar con un 9-7 es terribelemente importante el partido del domingo .. todavia tengo fe que podamos cambiar…

We need to move on as an Org. Ponder does virtually nothing right. defenses shut our pass offense down while they play 8-9 in box because Ponder hasn’t the confidence to throw anything other than that slant, pick n rub and screen game – ALL in the 7 yard box.

Even though I don’t want to, compare us to the packers. Their receiving group is absolutely done with jennings and nelson out, so there go to receiver right now is cobb, not nearly the player Harvin is. They have zero running game and just run the ball to run the ball. Aaron Rodgers makes that receiving group look like they can play. Ponder can’t complete a bubble screen, let alone a 35 yard pass.
Point being is, with comparing the 2 teams, the Vikes are much better on paper across the board with those 2 injuries for the dreadful packers, yet they still win because they HAVE A QB. Go down as one of the worst draft picks to date, when we could have drafted defense and traded up 1 spot in this draft and got RG3. Just ridiculous.

The kid has to learn how to play when he knows the defense is try to limit him, key word there is learn.
When he has better receivers next year assuming we draft one or two Wr’s then he will be better.

Go find a New York Giants fan and ask them what they thought of Eli Manning through two years. They wanted him gone because they weren’t patient now look at Eli when he has developed and has receivers to throw to. Do you think any Giants fans want Eli gone? NO!
He doesn’t get better on the bench once he’s past his first year but he will get better.
And those of you saying you think you know better whether to bench Ponder than the coach’s do? Are you around this kid every day watching him practice? Have you ever coached football? Have you ever coached a professional football quarterback?
Answer no to any of the above and you don’t know more than the coaches.
He will rebound against Detroit at home watch and see.

    @Alex,

I agree with you a little bit. But the Vikings situation is more dismal.

Eli never had games of 58 and 63 yards IN ANY of his games to my knowledge, and certainly not 2 in a row.

There is no excuse for Ponder’s play except injury. Then it falls on the coaching staff to make that kind of dumb decision!

No two players are exactly alike but Eli’s numbers through his first two years weren’t good and Ponder may have better numbers than Eli in his first two years.(both played a similar number of games as rookies).
The thing is we don’t know the coaches game plan for the Seattle game. It may never have been let Ponder throw for over 200 yards. It may have been run against a strong pass defense and let Peterson take the work load. There are so many factors that none of us will ever know.

  424. By Alex on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Never said it was favorable simply posted it so people could read. I’m supportive on Ponder being the starting quarterback for now but I’ve also said there has to be improvement I am not at all content with the way he’s played. I just think benching him does more harm than good for the team. I’m trying to look 4-5 years down the road here not just at this one year. if Ponder can improve this year right now in these 7 games(and possibly beyond) then I will be happy. But he must keep improving he cannot regress or I too will call for his head.

  425. By Spencer on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

I will never understand the “we must forge ahead with the failed QB because we put all our eggs in his basket” logic. If he’s stinking the joint up, I don’t care if he was the number 1 overall pick making big time money, give someone else a look.

Is Webb the answer? Maybe, maybe not. All I know is he can’t be any worse than Ponder has been. Maybe a benching will wake Ponder up. Running him out there so he can play timid, scared football isn’t going to fix anything.

  426. By Ronzie on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Adrian is the best back in football without question, but ponder has got to get it together and find his confidence, also it is frustrating, because the Vikes always have trouble with mobile quarterbacks, got to figure out a better game plan,or find some better defensive players.

You guys who are criticizing Ponder are effin’ ridiculous..I don’t remember many of you complaining about him in week 5..just like all the experts, I saw posts like Ponder is “maturing”, “efficient”. Now he sucks and should be benched. A 2nd year QB with a great running game can win, but you need great defense to keep it close, win the field position battle, get turnovers and overcome mistakes. THE PROBLEM IS THAT WE AIN’T GOT ANYTHING THAT RESEMBLES EVEN AN AVERAGE DEFENSE AND FRAZIER/SINGLETARY CAN’T SEEM TO FIND A WAY TO FIX IT! This defense is a complete joke..3 rookie QBs and one rookie RB tore them a new a$$hole and all you guys can talk about is Ponder!

Ponder may not be Andrew Luck or RGIII. But even with his sub-par efforts lately, I’m more confident in Ponder than I will ever be in this defense. If JA is any kind of veteran leader, he should act more like Ray Lewis and tell the rest of that defense that if Ponder is struggling, it’s on the defense to find a way to win. Period. Frazier and co. better figure it out soon because the clock is ticking on all of them.

Wow, I watched parts of yesterday’s game and it will be cruel of me to make any smart cracks so I won’t because that would just be mean.

But I have a couple real basic questions that I hope some would mind sharing their opinions on:

    1. Did most fans like seeing Percy left in the game after tweaking his ankle?

    2. Was there a good reason to abandon the run? (I didn’t watch the whole game but it looked like #28 was on a tear and perhaps #7 was a little off)

    3. If a player is having an “off game”, isn’t it ok to put in a reliever? (kind of like what’s done in baseball)

    4. Do you think other teams have your bubble screens figured out yet?

    5. And was that the best preparation done with 10 days?

    respectfully,

You people are the most emotional overreacting bunch of babies… How many games have we won with Ponder, but yet you’re predicting he will not win another game? Ponder struggled against two very good defenses but he can bounce back this week against the Lions… I do have some concern with Ponder but most my concern is with our Defense. Cook is out and you can bet Megatron will be licking his chops this week.

This is what happens with a young QB, there are ups and downs but you gotta give this kid a break.. This is the toughest position to play in any sport and he does not exactly have tons of talent around him when it comes to our passing game. Remember the Falcons got rid of Musgrave because they wanted a deeper passing game and think about it, we are using Percy Harvin for our deep passing game, he is like 5’9″ and he’s not exactly going to win a lot of battles. I’m by no means sold on Ponder but you got to ease up on the kid, let him learn and be realistic on what he has around him talent wise. He is a human being for gods sake!

    I can’t believe my eyes…. still support for Ponder…..

Exactly HOW BADLY does the guy have to play before it is obvious to you who still think he “has it”, but we need to be patient?

Ponder has ZERO pocket presence, lost in pocket, fearful to stay and pass from pocket, backs himself out the top of the pocket and then flushes like a covey of birds… even when he still has time and room to throw.

Then there is the accuracy thing. But of ALL things, the fact he has more 1-2 yard completions than he does 10 yd completions. People, that is hard to do! The pass game cannot even open up for the manifest inability he has in throwing the ball.

Any suggestion Ponder is in same solar system with Mannings or Troy Aikman is just gonzo talk. Just look at the delivery of the football. ALL dreamy comparisons should end right there. He has a highschooler’s arm.

  444. By Vlad19 on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

By the way, come kick-off, I support EVERY guy on Vikings. Even Ponder.

I just happen to be a pragmatist, and sitting at 5-4 with his last 4 games nothing short of a car crash, and seeing a defense that is burning out because the futility of playing 40 minutes while Ponder exhausts our senses is just too much to sit and be entertained by it all. It is not fun, whether you call it “rebuilding” or not.

And when you have gametime, you ALWAYS try to win. And Ponder does not give us our best chance. I am all for our best chance.

Then however the staff sees it, I cheer and jump for joy at all our players, one and all.

@J the point of the comparisons is that we don’t know what Ponders ceiling is right now we have to let him play and show improvements and get through the struggles like the players mentioned did. What if the Giants had cut Eli after his second year and he had gone to the quarterback needy Jets? Would they have won two super bowls? How stupid would they look now?
Why give up on Ponder when he has played so little games in the NFL as the starter? Again I am not happy with how he has played either but to give up on him now would be a mistake.

  460. By Sully on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

Not only should Ponder be able to play better, he needs to LEAD better. Musgrave might be part of the problem too, but the QB should be able to identify all problems including coaching and play calling and do what it takes to win. Even though he’s young, he’s had enough time to be at least a little better at both playing and leading by now.

CMON MAN …..

I will say that MUSGRAVE should also share some of the blame …….I hate it when I hear people say that we have no receivers …… wasn’t Sidney Rice Pro bowl with FAVRE throwing to him and not really done anything before or since ……julio jones , victor cruz come to mind when u have a decent qb , the Vikes said they worked on Ponder utilizing the middle of the field more even with scrambling ….. what ????? isn’t that why Adrian and Toby r there for ……. as a die hard fan ….we all know …….. there’s just a disconnect with the coaching on the team , results SPEAK loudly ……. @ Alex ………without offence ….I understand the reasons for comparisons ………the only thing I can compare right now to ponder is that he is not very confident , his skill set is average at best …..his results and stats r mixed sub results ……1st rounder ???? I dont see a strong or accurate arm , I dont see leadership skils and I certainly see a level of frustration at most levels of the players but not saying what they feel …..If a player has definitive strengths they surface without effort ……I just do not see the CEILING for him unless it is with the help of scaffolding …..lol……. an honest question to all out there ………….PONDER or WEBB ? would it be that different a result now ? I would say if webb had 19 games to start would the result be any different …….do u see that ceiling ?

  465. By Alex on Nov 5, 2012 | Reply

I’ve seen Webb play before. I’ve watched the coaching staff build an offensive package around him and it fail. I think Ponder is better at throwing right now, I think Ponder will be better in two years than Webb will ever be at playing quarterback. Though I do wish we would use Webb as a Wr where we have an obvious need and he is very athletic.

Jibberish is not a virtue …..my jibberish is based on true comparisons it has very little to do with patience ……..if that was the case AP would be close to his first PRO BOWL right …… U sound very much in control of your thoughts and I respect them ……….try not to be patient with mixed results because u say wait for the end of the year ???????? isnt it a self fulfilling prophecy to wait the year out ….lets all be disappointed with mediocracy until we are a true dynasty …… cheers

I would also like to make the point of coaching and its importance in defense of Ponder ………..

ponder had a solid start . why ?

what did he succeed with ……………all the things that all of us hope for in our starting qb ………..not great at anything but makes or had made solid decisions through the first 4 games …….. with AP and Percy

    what has changed ?

It has seen pretty profound changes with Christians effectiveness and success as a balanced team …….we are predictable offensively ….we r just lucky we have the best RB in the league and he is a TRUE Talent ! God are we blessed at that position ……. HAIL ADRIAN !!!!! Percy is certainly losing effectiveness over the last few games …. his frustration on sunday says it all!

It is ashamed to think that if that well dries up for the close of the year due to ineffective passing game ……. AP could be cheated of a Stallion Year after surgery …….. more importantly ……… just need to get back to that winning formula ……………….. long sustained ball control drives in all 4 quarter’s . 80 yarders !!!!!!! AP 25 carries a game and 25 – 30 passing attempts from ponder ….. its how we beat SF

Ponder is gonna take the heat for the results …. I would like to think that all qbs accept that accountability ….. hes not happy with his play and us fans shouldn’t be either …..what i respect of professional athletes like ponder is the simple fact of being honest and true to us fans in his own evaluation of himself ……….but it is starting to be a trend ………

Love this guy Utley, because someone agrees with him, THAT guy has the brain…

To those who still smoke the medicine, it is arm strength – ARM STRENGTH – that separates those great QBs all you yahoos are trying to compare with Ponder because of STATS…. Stats are for football fans 101…. Rely on stats all you want, Ponder will be STATISTICALLY out of football by 2017, maybe 2018. At LEAST he will have found his way onto the clipboard lounger.

The silliest thing I have read is this constant comparison with GREAT QBs simply because of some stats…. THOSE QBS had NO fear of throwing downfield because they had ABILITY to throw the ball downfield. So all they had to LEARN was timing and their teammates.

Ponder still needs how to learn what a pocket is.

And parading a 350 yd performance in the Skins game is pure brilliance – chasing a 3 score lead for most of the second half, and having had a 9 pt lead but so inept couldn’t convert a TD on any drive, leaving that barn door wide open….

What happens to defenses with 3 score leads and a half of football???? That’s right, prevent, bend and don’t break D… LOTS of mop-up yards that look good on STAT sheet for the “learner fans” out there.

and a REAL football talent, RG3 grabbed the open door and spanked us with it.

Ponder collected awesome loss and whopping 350 yds… oh-boy! Not a shining moment in the game either, but you are happy with 350 yards. Great – now I know what achievement is in the NFL – garbage stats!

    Just ask Utley.

stats speak for themselves ……we do not have to overlook that …….it is the beginning of every HOF players model of work over a career……w / no interceptions and an over 70% completion rate over the first four games for ponder with a 4-1 record …………

I can certainly respect UTLEYS perspective ……….. but 8 interceptions and a 1 -3 record are directly connected aren’t they ……
as a die hard educated fan u must be able to read what stats report and have it basically speak to you with the outcome …… read between the lines and scrutinize objectively ……….stats eliminate subjective decisions dont they or else u would see me as the QB for the vikings right …… if u turn a stats report upside down I would have been a HOF; or maybe the stats also directly correspond to the draft and how players get chosen …….. regardless of what most peoples opinions of stats are ……….. they are the foundation of measuring performance ……. without them …………….where do u start ?

  476. By J on Nov 6, 2012 | Reply

STATS combined with Character is what I like about Spielmens approach to the draft ………… were headed in the right direction lets just put time stamps to each position right? 2 years is way too long to evaluate an integral as a position of qb for us …….

  477. By Vlad19 on Nov 6, 2012 | Reply

J, I like your remarks and your logic. Fully agreed, but do not get me wrong, I know the value of stats, but I also know “mop-up” stats, and I know when a guy gets them by high% pops and his talent pool that runs for yards and TDs, which is ALL Ponder gets practically. Ponder’s stats, but not his doing.

MY remarks are solely in contest to the silly comparisons made in above remarks about Manning, Aikman, others…. it is HERE that stats are what you wipe with, because it was the innate TALENT and pocket presence those guys had, and the brass those guys had, the willingness to try and win with each throw practically…. Stats don’t show you that stuff.

Great example, Drew Bledsoe… had stats and BIG arm, but he was paper mache! I saw Brady fill in on injury game and saw all I needed to see. Bledsore curls up and falls to the ground under pressure – Brady throws TDs.

So measure stats all you want (rhetorically speaking to you) but Ponder is not in the solar system with the guys a few tried to compare JUST BECAUSE OF SOME STATS…

I say. let’s lay money Ponder doesnt end up in HOF, and not likely a play-off QB, that is my guess, unless he is lucky enough to be holding a clipboard on the right team.

  478. By J on Nov 6, 2012 | Reply

Vlad ………point taken !!!!! well said urself !

INNATE TALENT and Pocket presence should be at the top without stats right ? the subjective part of decision making ….Love the brady analogy ……..a 6th rounder ………why ?? because of the above combined with his overall play I agree with u and ponder not ending up in the hof ………then why are we just spinning wheels instead of being progressive 4 bad weeks in a row from ponder isnt acceptable without consequence or change……….I would much rather see us trying to correct the shortcomings of our team collectively with what options are available to us now and how can we not display the progressiveness of an up and coming organization with tolerance of not getting the job done ……..QB is a hard position ….. its just the game //

    Cheers

I was at the seahawks game live in person on Sunday with my daughter in Seattle at century field and closely watched Christian on the sidelines what was evident to me was he was by himself most of the time and I felt sorry for him when Percy and Frazier had words …….he has to feel that but just didn’t answer the bell ? didn’t have it ??? Then I got home and was able to watch the game on my pvr and it was painful ……it made me a Wilson fan ……really !!

give ponder the benefit and let him start against the lions ……… the result should determine his fait after the bye ……… if we win …….no problem hopefully it will carry forward for good things from him to close the year …… if we lose two options …….go for a draft position or change the QB ……….I would prefer the latter ……….he is TRYING and I can see him as a leader in the future ……. just not for us ??

    J,
I think this about Ponder – I htink he was a HUGE miss by our Org. He is a good kid and means well…. road to helk is paved with good intentions.

Yes, he needs to perform. The stuff with Percy says all you need – these guys are not fooles, they KNOW the shortcomings, and when AP runs for 182 and basically set the table for Ponder to be lights out, he couldn’t, WOULDNt dare complete a meaningful throw! With that kind of run game and the guy can’t find seams and the guys down low, he can’t find anything in mid depth???? Impossible. He doesn’t see it or is afraid to throw it.

And THERE is where I am with my harshest critique – no bravado, slipping faster and not a clue how to right it.

  481. By Vlad19 on Nov 6, 2012 | Reply

And the argument about rebuilding… tell that to a locker room full of competitors and you will be escorted out and your feet won’t touch the floor…..

We were sitting 5-2, you think we were thinking “rebuilding”? or do you think the players thought they would contest? Fighters fight and opponents know they have been in a brawl if you lose. After Ponderizing a game, Vikes feel like they had been escorted out of the building with ne’er a kiss on the cheek.

There is no calculus to “rebuilding”, each guy wants to win now, as it should be. Problem is, we are thin on D and too much time on field makes them average to bad (and get rid of Brinkley, needs seeing eye dog, and we kept the wrong Henderson), and we can’t afford that.

Settling for mediocrity is always a bad message to send your team. Frazier is sending it now, with Percy inflamed and Peterson shaking his head at the spectacle of another pnderized game… it cannot continue, Frazier will lose the team!

Then Ponder can get all the garbage yards he could ever want as we will be getting smoked and Ponder will get 150 every 4th quarter.

    1. The rookie quarterbacks around the league are doing better. Christian P. gets rattled and is the struggling quarterback of the future. But how long does the Management need to evaluate him?
    2. He seems to be a nice guy, but this is a gladiator sport. It is about winning, passion, and go-get-them attitude.
    3. Christian, the fans are going to boo you this Sunday. Ask your teammates to support you and spend a lot of time in the passing game. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
    4. Spielman, good job on the draft 2012. At this time, the quarterback position is a HUGE area of weakness.

Yes, J, I been around, as they say. I cried my eyes out after they lost to KC in SB IV….. been watching and bleeding since about 1965.

I also like your very clear vision and commentary. No cliche or predictable banter. Sharp critique yet you have a healthier optimism than I have at this stage with the team, I might add. But I am also a coach of baseball and that “need to do” thing comes out in me when it is this glaring.

    Ponder is glaring.

I can agree the last few games have been disappointed, but you will have this type of performance with a team that is rebuilding. Everyone what’s instant gratification, but that’s just not how things work. This team is still at a level no sports analysis thought they would be. Ponder has 19 games and is going through rookie growning pains. If you could point your finger and say Ponder is the only player not doing will then you all might have an arguement. But that’s not been the case in the last three games. The Defense has returned to they type of play we saw last year with QBs picking us apart in the middle and running backs making good gains. The offensive line is allowing defenders through on pass protection “can you say Ole” watch the right side against the Lions or if you recorded the last game replay and watch the right side. It’s not all on Ponder this is a team game and this team is not playing well now. Putting in another QB will only mean losing with another QB in the game. The whole team need to work together and become better. They have the potential to beat any team in the league, but they have to hit on all cylinders. They are hitting on only 2 now that’s bad neww.

Coaching career[edit] Miami DolphinsAfter retiring as a player, he became the quarterback coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2005–2006.

[edit] Dallas CowboysIn January 2007, Garrett was hired by the Dallas Cowboys as offensive coordinator. His influence made the Cowboys the 2nd best offense in the NFL making him an attractive head coaching prospect. His salary in the 2008 season was nearly $3 million and was the highest salary for an assistant coach in the NFL.[5]

On November 8, 2010, he was named as the Dallas Cowboys’ interim head coach following the firing of Wade Phillips after the Cowboys’ 1-7 start for the 2010 season. On November 14, 2010, Garrett won his first game as a head coach, beating the favored New York Giants 33-20 in the Meadowlands.[6] The next week, he led the Cowboys to a 35-19 victory over the Detroit Lions, their first home win all season. On January 6, 2011, Garrett was named the official Cowboys head coach; the 8th in Cowboys history.

On December 29, 2008 the Detroit Lions received permission to speak to Garrett regarding the teams head coaching vacancy according to ESPN sources.[9] In January 2009, the Denver Broncos also interviewed him as a possible replacement for fired coach Mike Shanahan.[10] He was also a finalist for the St. Louis Rams head coaching position, to replace Jim Haslett, the interim head coach.[11] Ultimately, he lost the job to Steve Spagnuolo.

You and I have been around a long time as Vikings fans and I happened to be in KC during the 69 SB and I remenber how the Vikings were heavliy favored because of our Defense, not because of our Offense and I too was very disappointed when they lost, why becausse Hank Schram had a better game plan and Bud Grant was out “COACHED”.In my opinion, Ponder can improve but he has to take a long look at the man in the mirror and only he can make that change.

what good is getting a top reciever if we have no one to get the ball to him. I think once ponder got his girlfriend thats when his production went down. That said I still think webb should get in if we get behind at all next game what do we have to lose. I think this game is ponders last chance and I’m shocked at how low his production has dropped. I feel we have a good corps of recievers and as we saw the first 5 games when they go the ball we won and ap didn’t have to do it all. i think musgrave is on his last leg and one more game like the last 2 and it’s time for hom to go. I was a supporter of his but the last 2two games soured me on him.

  492. By Mike B on Nov 6, 2012 | Reply

The issue isn’t all on Ponder. I would point directly to Mr Loadholt and his performance. it was terrible. They even had to bring a TE in the backfield to provide protection on the right side. The lace of protection is making Ponder nervous in the pocket and throw errant p@sses. He has a very sharp throw when he is confident and we have all seen it. Pulling him will not help the team in the P@ssing game. It will not assure us anymore wins. Webb will not fix our offensive issues.

Viking1, SKOL! We are long in tooth and long in experiences with our team! You are more optimistic about Ponder, but I agree, he can improve…. but it will not mean much I am afraid. He lacks so much. He is panick stricken in the pocket even when he has no pressure – he bolts like a kid fresh out of his last day of school…. NOT how that position is played.

But it is what it is, and Ponder will be there again. Frazier will lose his people if he keeps running him out there though – the natives are more than restless – just ask Harvin!

    Mike B,

The old saw about “rebuilding” is only press carp… when you are bad, ANY change is considered “rebuilding”… how do you explain Cleveland?

Fact is, EVERY season you are indebted to the fan and your boss to play to win NOW. There is not a single professional that plays the game with the intention of waiting for some year in the future. That concept is a fraud – just ask the competitors that compete each game.

We were 5-2 and one of the leading horses in the race – rebuilding? Not on your life, this team wanted to win and played to win. They just can’t play very well because their leadership IN THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITION ON THE FIELD is lacking horribly.

No, Ponder is not the only bad thing on the field. You missed my numerous remarks about Brinkley and Erin Henderson. However, 2-3 yd throws and his horrible decision-making and his inability to pick up the blitz. Mike, that is as much the QB’s responsibility as it is the O-line, Ponder needs to know how to go to hot read – and he doesn’t pick it up AT ALL – exactly WHY opponents will keep a single high safety and BLITZ Ponder till he pukes, cause all he knows how to do is run away…. I recommend you listen to Frazier’s presser — “We expect opponents to go with a single high safety and pressure our pass game, bringing the blitz, until we show an ability to… and ability to be successful against that scheme.”

That is on Ponder, and NOT a complex part of the game, he simply needs to read the defense and react knowing his position players and where the blitz comes from… all stuff learned in highschool.

Oh, and how do you coach a highschooler’s arm into being an NFL arm?

  495. By James on Nov 6, 2012 | Reply

Mike wob you need to stop riding on ponder! Ya need to realize this dude cannot play! He can’t even hot open guys! Inserting Webb in will not hurt because if anything, Webb can only be as bad as ponder! Come on 65 passing yards? I think a high school qb can do better! Don’t go blaming the oline now, as we all know ponder can change the protection bit yet he don’t recognize defense and can’t read defense! When will ya man up to it! I mean I would rather see somebody else at the helm other than ponder. I it’s bethal so he it! We need to know what we have in the young guys. For example jarius wright…why is he not activated???

PLEASE QUIT LAZY FREZZE , DO IT FOR US , FOR THE TEAM HISTORY …. OR DO SOMETHING AT LEST DO THE BIG PLAYS, FIGHT, DIED IN THE FIELD LIKE A VIKING!!!!!

Need I remind everyone that this is still a rebuilding team with very young players at the skill positions on both sides of the ball. Ponder was never mister right but mister right now. When the vikings drafted Ponder they hoped that it would work out and I think they got there answer. The vikings might win 2 more games. 7-9 a vast inprovement from last year and come draft time it should put them drafting in the top 10 to 15 maybe to far down to get the qb they need but should get them players that they could use to coninue building a team for the future. As fans we want to think our team is ready to beat everyone and is better than they really are but this team started out the season as a team on the rise and they will end the season as a team on the rise showing promise of things to come. The vikings are who we thought they were but they are also going to be the team we want them to be. Hang in there viking fans you will get yours lord know you deserve it!!
