Vikings Offense Focused On Quick Start vs. Seattle

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 1, 2012 – 5:34 am

Wanting to start quickly is not a novel idea for offenses. Anyone who knows football knows that it’s much easier to operate offensively when you have a lead. Both Head Coach Leslie Frazier and QB Christian Ponder spoke at length on Wednesday while meeting with reporters about starting fast this week against Seattle, so it’s obvious the idea has been a talking point for the Vikings.

And for good reason. CenturyLink Field, home stadium of the Seahawks, is regarded as one of the toughest places to play in the NFL.

“Their fans do a good job of getting in the game early and making it hard on offenses and teams in general to function, much like our fans here,” Frazier explained. “When we have it going it’s a tough, tough place to play at Mall of America Field and their environment is similar in that way. You don’t want to fall too far behind in that environment, it can be tough.”

Seattle is 9-2 over the last calendar year at home, including 3-0 this season with impressive wins over Dallas, Green Bay and New England. CenturyLink Field is especially tough for opposing offenses. The Cowboys offense averages 19.5 points per game this season, but they managed just 7 points in their game at Seattle. Green Bay was held to 12 points (they average 24.1 per game) and the high-octane Patriots offense was held a full TD+ below its season average.

In order to avoid a similar fate, the Vikings offense must make strides of improvement this week in practice. That fact is not lost on the coaches or players coming off last week’s loss to Tampa Bay, a game in which the Vikings offense turned the ball over three times, went 3-and-out on its first 3 series and generated multiple 1st downs on just three of its first 12 possessions.

“There are some things we definitely want to do better,” Frazier said of his offense’s early-game struggles against Tampa Bay. “Get some first downs, we talked about that and we’re going to do our very best to improve in that area. We don’t want to have a lot of three-and-outs, especially on the road this week. We want to put some first downs together in order to help our team.”

There is good news and bad news. The bad news is the offense wasn’t able to generate enough production for a win. The good news is that Ponder and Co. believe the mistakes that led to the loss are correctable.

“It goes back to execution,” Ponder explained. “It really wasn’t anything they did, it goes back to what we did, which is a good sign. Everything is fixable, so we just have to fix it.”

The Vikings started that process early. Frazier had his team report to Winter Park on Monday before taking the day off on Tuesday and then resuming preparations for Seattle on Wednesday. The extra days off over last weekend following Thursday night’s game helped coaches and players clear their minds and recharge their batteries. The extra practice on Monday was designed to help the Vikings correct mistakes and regroup for an important week.

“Obviously, we have a lot of stuff to work on this week,” Ponder said. “I thought Monday we came out and kind of focused on us before focusing on Seattle. We had a great practice and did a lot of things to improve and we’re going to keep doing that this week and we’re looking at having a big jump from last Thursday to this Sunday, and we’re excited about it.

“It’s a good opportunity to start the second half of this season. It’s crazy that we’ve already played eight games, but we’re in a good place right now and we’re going to keep looking forward.”

I think what Frazier is trying to say…Its going to be TOUGH to win in Seattle… : /

    H.M.G….

I saw a stat you posted in the previous thread, one that really stood out..

Percy 60 catches this season…Next closest is 24 by Jenkins??…

Last week Jenkins caught 4 pa sses for 78 yards…But 3 of those pa sses were caught…With less than 5 mins to play, against a soft defense…And a game already in the win column for the Bucs…

I bet 20 of those 24 pass completions by Jenkins…Are in the 4th quarter…And the Vikings well behind in the game…

Jenkins is TOTALLY invisible the first 3 quarters, of any games !!!…

Scary stats for or other WR’s…Outside of Harvin…

Seattle is definitly going to be a tough place to play let alone pulling out a win. With that being said, as a fan, I really dont care about how much production we see out of the offense. I just hope that they can do enough to get the win.

This game scares me, I think we should be able to pull out a win but man… IDK. I hope we can.

Hear last night on KFAN Seattle is favored by 5 PTS. but home field advantage accounts for 4.5 of those points, so really seattle is only favored by 0.5 points.

Harvin has 60 catchs because he thought he would not get enough attention in the off season. Thats why he “asked for a trade” At first I thought to myself that we were going to run him into the ground, then I realized that this is what he wants. So if he wants the ball 20 times a game I say give it to him if we can.

AP is the leading rusher right now after 8 weeks. Oline is not playing lightsout by any means, but not playing bad either. We should be able to run between the tackles and have good luck on special teams.

I don’t see this being Ponders break out game for our passing offense. They have the #1 secondary in the league, Tom brady could barley throw against them, A. Rogers could barley throw against them. This is bad news for our lack of pass offense and CP#7.

If we win (hopefully we will) it’s not going to get done through the air, it will be a ground and pound situation for sure. Have to win the turnover battle and do some good things on special teams, if we expect to win.

Next week we are all going to be talking again about how bad Ponder played through the air.. I know I wont be personally, I know what he is going up against, if he gets more than 100 yrds passing, I’ll be impressed. Just depends on how many picks he throws to see how much I would say next week.

Again, I tihink we are/can win, but man………….. It’s gunna be brutal

I think this won’t happen with bill Musgrave noo. A guy that plays madden knws more plays then him. He should play that n get more plays. Haha well if they get to a fast start it will be as an individual does a big play for us

  8. By Muskyfever on Nov 1, 2012 | Reply

    1vikingsfan…

That’s actually a really good idea, Lets all chip in and buy Musgrave the new Madden so he can learn how to really call plays.

Even when I play as the vikings and the game calls plays for me… it still less vanilla than what Musgrave does

  9. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 1, 2012 | Reply

I personally, will be limiting my expectations on this game…

“Hope for the best, but prepared for the worst” outcome…

I see this game, in Seattle…Being the toughest on the Vikings schedule…Seattle’s great pass D…And the Vikings playing on grass… : /

I know Ponder by all means should do poorly in this game…But this fan believes Ponders arm, is the only way the Vikings can win this game…

A great defense like Seattle’s can shut down a certain area of a teams strengths…AP is our strength…

If Seattle wants to put 8 or 9 men in the box…And shut down AP…I believe playing at home…They will…

Ponder needs to step up in this game…And lead this team…Grab some face masks of guys making mistakes…Point fingers where wants his coverages…Be aggressive !!…Run down the field and grab a WR that makes a play for you…And lift him in the air, congratulating him…

Ponder needs to be a LEADER in this game !!!…

Then, I think they have a chance to win…

Can the Vikings O-line with 10 days rest…Push around a defense with less rest in Seattle ???…And go for the ground and pound game…Maybe…

Should be an interesting game…And hard fought..No matter what…

    GO VIKINGS !!!

Speaking of the last game, Ponder said “It wasn’t anything they did, its what we did”

Ponder, it is what YOU and the rest of the team DIDN’t Do!

Let us hope ALL of you are ready for this game! We need this game more than a win against Greenbay or Chicago at this time!

  11. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 1, 2012 | Reply

This would be my very first play of the game on offense for Ponder…

Percy out wide right…Simpson and J Wright in a double package wide left…Ponder under center…AP in the backfield…Sully snaps the ball…Ponder on a quick 3 step drop…Simpson and Wright criss-cross in their patterns…Simpson running the inside slant and go draws both the CB and S coverage…Wright is running a fly pattern…WRIGHT IS RUNNING WIDE OPEN DOWN THE SIDELINE…PONDER THROWS A TOUCH PASS TO WRIGHT IN STRIDE THIRTY FIVE YARDS DOWN THE FIELD !!!…AND ITS OFF TO THE RACES…LOOK AT THE SPEED OF JARIOUS WRIGHT !!!

TOUCHDOWN !!!!…J Wright…His first of this season !!!

    The crowd goes SILENT… ; )

Big plays early in games…Quiet crowds…Trick plays that work…Quiet crowds…

    What the Vikings need in Seattle ???…Is a quiet crowd… : /

1 Vikings fan, I can guarantee you that Bill Musgrave has PLENTY of Offensive plays. I dont know why you think you know what he knows and doesnt know man. Look at what he did in Atlanta. He had a very productive Offensive system in Atlanta. Its not that he lacks the creativeness, its the fact that any good coach is going to understand the limitations that exist in the given personnel. Right now, the Vikings are a RUN FIRST TEAM. They are not built to throw the ball 25-30 times a game. There is no point in stressing out about the lack of explosive pass plays because you are not going to see them become a Green Bay caliber Offense over night. He is just trying to call plays that agree with the level of development of his players. They will be more dynamic as they all develop into the system but there are going to be many ups and downs that us fans need to be patient with. I think the reason why we are seeing Ponder and the offense struggle right now is because they are giving into the pressure of trying to make big, explosive plays down field when they are just not built for that right now. Early in the season, we saw that Musgraves system can be very effective when executed.

Ponder struggles against tampa to throw the ball and they had a 25th ranked pass defense. Seattle has the 3rd ranked pass defense. good luck Ponder, squander

So what if we dont get the early lead? Is our offense just going to shut down again? Thinks Wobbs, Fraizer and Ponder for telling me something that should be common knowledge among these fellow bloggers.

Jayson……Ponder is averaging 33 throws per game, with a high of 52 attempts at Washington, and 35 in the games vs TB, Tenn, SF, and Indy. You might want to rethink your numbers a bit.

  18. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 1, 2012 | Reply

    Jayson..

Liked your post and points made…

But Musgrave ran a conservative, Matty ice offense also…Just jump on a blog for Alanta…And ask them about there old offensive coordinator…And if they think he was conservative or not…You might be surprised at the responses you will get ???…

Like the point of… “play execution” being effective the team…Vikings do well in the running game in that area…But there are several things that need to happen, for a play work…With execution being a major part…But “deception”, plays just as big a role in any play being successful…

That is where the Vikings do not, do a good job…That is where “creativity” in play calling comes into play…And not being so predictable…

Musgrave and Frazier both believe in an offense…That can “impose their will” with a running game against a defense…And with a good defense, they will win..Its just a matter of muscle ??…

Most coaches take a more open approach…Being “mind of matter”…Using “strength and deception” to win games…

You just can’t bully your way around the NFL anymore, like in the old days…It’s a pa ssing league now…This team needs to be more creative, getting the football to there players…imo

Vikings winning formula,Yes we can and will win this game ,heres how…..Go back to the basics Defense, stop their run game,Tackle Tackle ,this will be a rookie Q.B who will make rookie mistakes, stay fundamentally sound,Offense has to bring our A game rushing attack ,need 200 yards by AP and Toby also Ponder may have to scramble a little more to open up short passing game,We can beat this team and while playing to our strong points on this team…..17-9 Vikings

harvin needs to touch the ball every series. you have his first touch in the 2nd quarter or of course you will be playing from a hole. AP and Percy get touches early. open things up for Rudolph and Devin A. And Simpson. Makes the game come easier for ponder. This is what they did against San Fran. bessed they’ve looked since Brett was here in 09. And yes jenkins is a scrubb. White made him look good in ATL. he’s a legit number 2 guy. We have that and a better one in simpson and Devin A. we have percy the best slot guy in the league. …we need a stud wideout and to pay percy….so send fumble fingers Toby G down the road…..AP is gonna have to learn to pass block someday….he catches the ball fine….he needs to be an everydown back…..you pay him and percy to be explosive……on the feild

  23. By dlineguy on Nov 1, 2012 | Reply

and for all you guys hating on the D…..when you go 3 and out or fumble the first 9 times you have the ball…….your defense gets tired. they are one of the better units in the league when the offense moves the ball……Brad Muskgrave is our worst player on defense. Cook being gone will be interesting to see some of our other guys. will they put antoine back outside? i think you keep him as your nickel guy. when he is closer to the qb he makes soooooo many plays. harrison smith will be a stud and a leader…we need to build around him and cook on the back side. sanford im not sure about, he’s not as bad as people say.

Hope our O-line with 10 days of rest, can get after the defensive front four of Seattle !!!…And open holes for AP ???…Keep our defense rested and fresh, by running the ball effectively…

Might be the key to the game ???…

The one thing I hope to see this game is Ponder actually spreading the ball around. I mean Harvin almost always has double coverage so it shouldnt be that hard to find another receiver. And once you start spreading around the ball to other players, it takes the pressure off our big time players like AP and Harvin which in turn, I think, allows bigger plays down the stretch.

And on another note i would love to see the play that OTKalil2012 wrote above. I think we could have one heck of a passing threat if we could get Harvin, Simpson, and Wright in sync with Ponder.

    SKOL VIKES!!!!

I have no doubt, Kalil will be a huge leader of the O-line in the near future…That will be big for Ponder going forward…

  27. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 1, 2012 | Reply

    Note to Ponder…

Tom Brady has had plenty of time in years past to throw the football…He really takes care of his O-line !!…

He takes them out to dinner…Invites them to a lot of personal gatherings…Treats his O-lineman like family…

And those guys PROTECT him like family also…

If I was you Christian…I would take Kalil and some of the young O-lineman out to eat, YOUR treat too…Especially when Kalil has a problem gaining the weight needed to play LT…Vikings want him bigger than he is now…

    Ponder..Buy the guys a T Bone steak…Buy Kalil 10 T-Bone steaks !!!…Take care of your brothers…

And they will take care of you!!!… ; )

last game against bucs he would pass the ball instead of giving to AP? And AP was in beast mode averaging almost 9 yards. Why didnt they gave him the ball? Its not that I hate bill Musgrave but he does the wrong plays at the wrong time. And also its not for him to call the same screen pass all the game? Even 49ers have better passing game than we do and first they are a defense ream n run offense.

How about the Vikings (read Musgraves/Frazier) try an unpredicable play such as an Onside Kick after we make a TD or field goal (If we get any.) The Saints tried and made it in ’09 game.

Oh thats right, niether Frazier or Musgraves have the guts to do that.

I sure hope the offense dosen’t go 3 and out much, because field position will be paramount against this stingy Seahawk “D”. If we can win the field position battle and not turn the ball over it would help a bunch. It would be nice if we could hold there “O” deep in their territory and start our drives with good field position.

Why would we trade Toby? We don’t have any other proven backs at this point. You could even argue that Toby isn’t proven in the NFL.

At this point in the season we have to work with what we have, and stick to the youth movement. The team that is the healthiest and playing well in January will win the Super Bowl.

Jones does recommend scanning the waiver wires for young free agent players of any position!

  75. By Animal26 on Nov 1, 2012 | Reply

Good question viking181164. The logical thing to do, would to put Webb in there for a series or two and see if he can breath life into the offense. However, What Frazier and company (this includes Wobby as well) will do, is try and paint this with Rainbows, puppy dog tails and smiles. Claiming that the team as a whole played bad and Ponder doesn’t deserve any of the blame……….. Even if he throws 3-4 ints.

My only issue with Frazier is that he tends to believe in “our guys” too much. It’s good to have confidence but to have it to the point where you’re hesitant to make moves that will make the team better is crazy!

Good call Animal. Look how long we stuck with T joke just because the coach didn’t want to admit he was wrong and t joke was only a second round pick. Since Frazier is basically a chilli clone we are probably going to have to endure all the Ponder bad for 4-5 years or until Frazier is fired if Ponder does continue to be terrible.

Seriously why do so many people rag on Ponder so much. The guy has some serious potential. And like dlineguy said if we traded him, he would probaly have a great career somewhere else. Which leads me to say that the play calling is just horrible. I mean when the play calling, especially in the pass, is so predictable that opposing defenses are just about never thrown on their heels, its kinda hard for any offense to get anything going. Yeah Ponder has made some mistakes, missed receivers that were wide open but what QB hasnt done that.

I think instead of complaining so much about a player and a team that is 5-3, maybe you should show some support!

  91. By GrandDaddyPurp on Nov 1, 2012 | Reply

Just because Jarius Wright is fast doesn’t mean he can take a hit at the NFL level. Seahawks have some really big hard hitting players in their secondary. Not the best time to throw a little guy like Wright into the game.

Let’s really mess with the opposition and start with Toby and Aromashadu– let AP and Harvin stay out for the majority of the first half– make the others earn their keep– then unleash AP and Harvin after halftime– let’s see teams make adjustments to players they hardly see.

I didn’t want Frazier as a head coach to begin with. I didn’t like his vanilla defense and didn’t want a vanilla head coach. We aren’t aggressive, we don’t play to win we play to not lose and we are reluctant to make changes. Frazier is basically Chilli 2.0.

Everyone and their mom knows our play calling is terrible on offense and is a big part of what is holding our offense back. The second Musgrave said “that’s something we’ll have to take a look at” as to why Harvin wasn’t on the field in the red zone, he should have been fired. So if Frazier the most incompetent head coach ever that he can’t see that Musgrave is part of the problem or is he just too stubborn to admit he’s wrong?

All the negative arm chair quarterbacks on here want a “first year Cam Newton”, soaring one year and “crashing and burning” the next. or an RG3 who has flashes of brilliance, but when it comes to TEAM success shows off a 3 and 5 record. Muskyturdfever- You said our OLine is number 5. We only allowed 5 sacks in the season? LOL duhhhh!!! . First of all I thought you said stats dont matter. Second of all every time when OLine did not block what did Ponder do? Did he take a sack or did he run? He run. Lastly, that does not mean we are the best P-a-s-s Block dou-che bag. Ponder made our OLine looks like a great P-a-s-s Block which is they are not. They are the worst.

  201. By LarsonFamily on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

You think Ponder wants to stand and get a hit? He already have problems with his shoulders and its hurting him every time the defense knocked him down. Its painful, the QB position is not the most fun position to play because the only thing you can do is throw or get hit.

  202. By LarsonFamily on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

Also Ponder gets the plays from what Musgrave give him. He can’t just make up the plays from what the fans wants him to play out of. You notice Musgrave is so obsessed with Harvin and always tried to get the ball to Harvin. Musgrave finds so many strange plays that has to do with Harvin. Remember last summer Harvin complains that hes not getting the ball much and he wants to be traded? Remember hes complaining that Musgraves does not have enough design plays for Harvin to participate? Well there is his wish, and now we are stuck with Harvin threatening us with his trade and stuck with him hogging the ball when there is alot of options for Ponder to throw to. Musgrave is trying so hard to keep Harvin happy so we can sign him an extension contract. That is all hes doing.

  203. By LarsonFamily on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

How many times did Ponder run? Alot of times , ok lets take away his run and have him stand there. How many sacks would it be if he just stands there? over 25 sacks!!! Are we still number 4 like you mentioned? No!

  204. By LarsonFamily on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

Now the reason why Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and the rest of Top 5 QB is an ELITE QB is because their OLine blocks so well and gave them enough time to throw. Now if they were in the Vikings team, they will take more sacks than Ponder will because they dont run as much as Ponder does. I bet each one of them will either get injuried or have trouble throwing INTS. Remember when Brett Favre was our QB, did you notice how often he runs to find our WR open? Man he runs way to much to do that and alot of efforts for him to find someone open. He has expereince of getting away, but at the same time he still throws INT just like Ponder does when it comes to running.

  205. By Muskyfever on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

I was listening to stats last night on an NFL station I have on sirius. They were talking about Ponder………….. They stated that through the first 18 games overall and averaged out, that Ponder has a better passer rating than… Brees, Peyton, Eli, Brady, Dalton, Vick, Rogers and a few other good names after the sane amount of games in teh beginning of their careers. I

I have mixed feelings about those stats….

As Vikigns fans, it is hard to have total confidence in your team or your QB there always seems to be a major let down. 98… should have went to the super bowl, 09…. should have went to the super bowl. Thus it is Hard to have complete faith right off the bat. expecially when you see Rookies like Luck and RGIII lighting up the field almost every game. There is always going to be something that we don’t like. And even though we belive (regardless of record) that our team could beat anyone in the NFL at any given moment just makes us great concerned fans that want to see our team play well and win….

When Brett Favre decided not to run, he got hit so hard by the Saints, and look what happened to Favre? His car..eer ended. His foot got crushed and he couldn’t use his feet as much and he needed them. He is used to running out and throws to his open WR as fast as possible. He couldn’t run anymore and then they knew he is definitely CHOKED! They blitzed, and blitzed until Favre finally realized he can’t run and throw to his WR anymore

He continued to throw INT with the OLines we have. Our OLines has not improved ever since Chillys time. Now you said our Oline is excellent in Rush Block. Sure, when we have AP, he is the one that made our Oline looks like an excellent blockers but its AP.

LarsonFamily… Did you really copy and paste what you said from the other blog thread???? You’re that un creative??? It just goes to show that you can’t think on your feet like a really QB should be able to. THus you have no right to judge Ponder.

Honestly man I don’t think you understand football, it’s not about what could have happened, its about what did happen.. For example I’ll quote you…

LarsonFamily “How many times did Ponder run? Alot of times , ok lets take away his run and have him stand there. How many sacks would it be if he just stands there? over 25 sacks!!! Are we still number 4 like you mentioned? No!”

That dosen’t matter dumb azz… He didn’t get sacked… thus the stats stand. What kind of QB just stands there? no one does that… NOT EVEN BRADY, and he cant run for sh!t. You must have been hit one too many times while “STANDING” in the backfield after your 5 step drop. and yes we still are #5 like I mentioned, cause the stuff you mentioned DIDN’T HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your going to come at me with anything from here on out, make it origanal so I can at least have some entertainment off you. Instead of repeating the same junk that made no sense in the first place from the ALL MIGHTY LarsonFamily

Now if we put in Gerhart, what happen? It turns ouy horrible. He could not do much but run straight or depends on how our OLines can get him open. How often does it get open when he gets the ball? Not very often because he can’t do dance moves like AP can.

Now you are acting like our OLine stats matters? LOL you’re such a turd. Our Oline is not great at all because they couldn’t block and we still managed to get our QB to be in Top 15.

  220. By LarsonFamily on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

It is all on Ponder because he runs, he gets to avoid getting sacks, and he tried so hard to find our WR open. He is the same a-s Favre when he was our QB. No, Our Ofline are not really number 5.

  221. By Muskyfever on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

Certain stats matter more than others. For example haveing a 100+ passer rating when you don’t throw anything over 5 yrds is jaded. But only allowing 5 sacks after the first five games of the season is great, unlike teams like ARI that had 24 sacks over the first five games. I’m talking about to progress our starting QB. I’m not sitting here telling you we have the best Oline… But it is certianly not what you think it is

They are (or were) really number five cause no QB just stands and waits to get hit once the ball is snapped. Good QB’s know how to escape and good Olines know that there QB can escape so they can play a certain way.

All QB’s can Elude… some slower than others…but they all do it… it dosen’t make a team less of a team because their QB can elude a tackle or two.. it, in fact, makes them better

On Sunday, at 3:15 pm, before the game starts I want you wannabe genius to take out the watch that has timers in it and time our Olines. When you see the watch that goes more than 3 seconds, you will see Ponder throws and it is complete (depends on if the WR catch the ball or not), and if the WR do catch the ball. That is how you know if he is a good QB or not. If it is less than 3 seconds and he either run or tried to do something with the ball, it is automatically an Ofline’s fault. That is how you JUDGE the QB.

Got to watch Wright play at ARK, followed he and Childs close,Jarius is so much like Percy its unbelievable,he was quick to get open,he played slot and wideout at ARK, so dangerous after catch , if you look at his stats what stood out was yards after the catch, and Jarius was tough to bring down just runs alot like Percy, Jarius needs to get his chance on the field,if you remember in preseason against Houston, he showed what he can do than he got hurt during that game, but the guy is so close to Harvin that it would scare me to see them both on the field spread out if I was the opposing team., just wait fans it will happen and Jarius is the real deal, To bad about Childs,he could just flat out go up and get the ball, hopefully next season we will have them both out there clicking,But seriously defending Wright and Harvin on the field together would absolutely be a defensive nightmare, hope my nightmare comes true this weekend go VIKINGS…..

Ok let me lower it down for you. You obsessed the stats way to much..

Look.. you said it is QBs job to escape.. DUH. Now he wouldn’t have to if our OLine block. Ponder will gets to throw the ball to WR alot easier. Now if you noticed carefully he has only had less than .9 seconds to look for WR and then he immediately runs. Why can’t he gets to stand for 3 seconds so he can throw the ball? Remember it doesn’t take .9 seconds for the WR to get seperations from CB. The routes that WR took is longer than .9 seconds. At 3 seconds is where the seperations gets open. Now you said Ponder gets alot of INT, yes duh! He has to run trying not to get sack and at the same time he draws some defense to get him and maybe he did saw some WR that could be open. Yes there is some bad throws, everybody has bad throws. Even Brady has some bad throws.

Do you noticed that Musgrave always find a plays where Ponder gets to throw Harvin inside the line instead of having Harvin run out of the line? Duh because our OLine can’t block quick enough so he has to find a design plays for Ponder to throw to Harvin insde the line. Thats the only way we could create explosives play because Harvin has the same characters as AP has, except he can catch better than AP.

  249. By LarsonFamily on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

Any QB in our team will end up the same way Ponder will. Same way Favre did in his second year as a Vikings. He couldn’t run anymore because of what the Saints did to his feet. Now he is limited to the fact he has to stand and try to throw the ball knowing its going to end up INT because it wont give enough time for our WR to get open. He has .9 seconds to do it and the outcome of the fans gets to see, oh Favre s-u-c-k-s. No its not Favre, its our Oline again.

  250. By LarsonFamily on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

Ponder is learning how to run and throw and he has not done that in his College Level. He is used to stand and throw the ball , but sure he has speed to run and that is great. We wouldn’t have to worry about him getting hurt like it happened to Favre. Still Ponder did received alot of beating towards to his shoulders, he is always day by day injury on the list. Its all the sores that hes been hit. Our Oline is not great at ALL. They dont deserved to be number 5. Maybe in Rush Block, but dont tell me it is number 5 in P-A-S-S block.

I will have to agree whole-heartedly on that fact. Ponder is our QB and fans need to get behind this guy and give him room to grow into his role. Yeah- he has made mistakes, but so has every single good QB in this league. Favre threw a lot of INT’s, Rodgers throws em, Both Mannings have thrown em and their fans whine about them too. Doesn’t make them a bad QB. Ponder has the smarts to be a great QB and is now gaining the Wisdom to back it up. If our O-line can give him time, he is going to start rolling. It will also depend on how we use our receivers. Our O.C. has got to quit holding back on options for Ponder…This was a funny blog this week. Lotsa banter and passion. Not sure why fans of the same team have to be so harsh, right? Whiie Larsonfamiily obviously has their own thoughts, I have always thought you had good stuff to say here as well. So- no worries. There is plenty of room for opinions on this blog. The thing that really URKS me is when people get disrespectful and starting using innapporpriate language on here in creative ways. No need for that in a Vikings Organization Official blog. If you want to talk like a sailor then “That other Viking Site” is the place where you can do that….

Vikes management did well in the draft 2012. Ponder does not seem to be ready in terms of advancing to the playoffs. The excuse this year is “rebuilding.” What would next year’s excuse be? Be nice to hear from the quarterback’s coach and the wide receiver’s coach.

Now to football. The Vikings OLine still needs work. Kalil, Sully, and Fusco have been good. While Loadholt is up and down. With Charlie Johnson just being a turd on the field.
It would be wise to take a LG early in the draft. Someone like Chance Warmack, Barret Jones, or Johnathan Cooper.

I have mixed feelings on Ponder— his greatest problem right now is he lacks confidence. At his pressers he has this up and down melodic rhythm of a Calif valley girl that irritates me– it is like, ho, hum, yeah, well, we have a lot to do, and I did not do my part, ho, hum– GET THE EYE OF THE TIGER– make it happen. O lines do break apart– but come on, when everyone is fighting to get back into the game (Tampa game), you have to do something– anything!!!

  271. By H.M.G. on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

Larsonfamily does make some valid points– one, Ponder is still learning and has shown he can do it. Two, we don’t hear what really goes on behind closed doors– the coaches say the same sing song PR after every game. And why not– you do not tell the enemy your position before battle.

Can’t rightfully think a guy can dismantle a bomb with out bomb disposal training right?
Everything is a process there will be up and downs but time is still needed for this product to fully mature and be the dominate QB he can be.

Ponder is still learning then why can’t most fans see he needs some more time.

Because most fans are like most people– impatient and ruled by their senses. Even our universities are based on empirical studies– all sensory knowledge. The higher knowledge (wisdom based on revelation) is not taught– it is the knowledge which guides visionaries and pioneers– they see what is not there.

Everything I’ve stated is the facts and it has nothing to do with my opinons. These are our subjects and its been like that for the last few weeks. Why you think we still keeping Ponder as a QB if you fans believed in stats from the internet? We already knew Ponder is a great QB, he beat Webb every time they compete. The whole major problems that made the outcomes of the way Ponder plays looks bad is because the OLine did not do very well. They couldn’t P-a-s-s Block, they can Rush Block, sure but its not all because of how great they block but its because we have a BEAST RB, ADRIAN PETERSON.

Now as far as the game this week goes, I am actually excited! It sounds like we may get to see Wright play and see our receivers make some plays. Fingers are crossed… Can you imagine if we finally got to see a down-field bomb for a TD. That is something to get up in the morning for. Would love to see the Vikings firing on all cylinders- like in the 49er game but with more down-field action. Like Larry the cable guy says, “Get R Done!”

OK, back. Put two fish in the boat a 44″ and a 48″ musky from tossing big pounder bulldawgs. I feel much much lighter now.

I think this is one of those games where everyone expects us to lose and that is why we will win. It seems year after year, we win the games were not supposed to win and lose the games we aren’t supposed to loose. Like last week with Tampa Bay. I thought for sure we had that game… but I was wrong… all the experts now think that we are going to lose this game because of location and the Seahawks D. Don’t get me wrong it will be a battle, but being underestimated is the best thing that can happen in this league.

I would love to see J. Wright get some playing time in, I really want to see what he is capable of

Please use the I-Formation more then you will win often! Peterson is perfect for that formation. Pass from the same formation. You don’t have to be in the shotgun to pass. Also, you’re tipping off the opponent to PASS PASS each time you line up in the shotgun. Thank you and go VIkes.

Just for chuckles, I watched the Tennessee game again…. a lowly ranked D and a sad offense to boot….. and watching this ridiculous display of Ponder scares the living bejezuz out of me knowing what Seattle can do… Ponder might one day be the acronym for bad quarterbacks, like that guy “Feldman” was the name given to anybody who went the wrong way in their life…..

Go Peterson. Gonna need 250 out of you.

To kalil, you talk of IF Seattle plays 8-9 in box…. forget it, it is in bank. The Viking offensive gameplan assures it, with the little hook and slant and rub n pick plays they run…. playing RUN defense is a given when playing Vikes, but so is playing the PASS because we simple are that bad, and have a playing field that ranges all of 7 yds insures we will see TON of 9 in box and STILL covers the pass quite effectively.

Our boys gotta grow some hair! All there is to it.

    @Vlad19…

I agree…Vikings most likely will see a 8-9 man box all day long…Unless Ponder throws them out of it…

And that means, quick 3 step drops…And throw some timing patterns down the field, trying to catch those safeties playing up in the box, flat footed…And hit some monster plays down field with the pa ssing game…But…

That also means the coach and OC has to TRUST their WR’s and QB to do their jobs…

I just do not see Frazier of Musgrave trusting the pa ssing game…Unles the game gets desperate (as usual) again…At that point, Seattle (like everyone else has) will expect that…And shut down the pass…

But when the game is well in hand by Seattle…You might see some garbage time stats from Jenkins again…With 2 mins left in the 4th quarter…

I will be cheering for my team…But this is going to be a tough battle…Even with a very good game plan…And great execution…

Hope the coaching staff and players are up for the task !!!

    GO VIKINGS !!!

Safeties are in the middle…No slants or in routes…At least early…

Creative stop and go routes and fly patterns…

They are playing on grass..Some stutter step routes could have DB’s falling down slipping…

Vikings have to stretch the field…If Ponder takes to much time taking big drops…The safeties will bail out…And help in coverage…

Vikings need to try and get the ball down field…Seattle’s D will be all over covering the short game…Running or passing…

  327. By viking181164 on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

stretch the field..with who? unless they send harvin deep on pass plays.. safety’s cant ignore him

  328. By OTKalil2012 on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

That’s why I would syt Jenkins for Wright…

    Put Harvin outside…Simpson outside…Wright in the slot…

Speed is the only thing that will move those safeties back from the line of scrimmage…

But also the fact…The Vikings show they will TAKE some shots down the field…Vikings don’t take chances…There isn’t a team in football that doesn’t know that…Including their fans…

At some point…Win or lose…The Vikings need to prove they will throw the ball down the field with confidence in their QB…Might as well be this game ???…Won’t matter when we 5-9 for the season…

I cannot comprehend the lack of respect nor the acceptance and appreciation of Childress’s coaching talents. How many other Vikings coaches in the last 30 years brought us from bottom to within inches of the Superbowl in four seasons? Had Childress been under a strong GM, things may have been different. Yes, Chilly had some control issues, but he knew how to put together a winning formula. How can that be disputed?

    Heck…Before Favre came…

Well, the year before Favre, Childress won the division and took us to the playoffs– and Childress brought Favre in– so who is responsible for assembling and orchestrating the overall strategy to take us so close to the big dance.
To say Childress is anything less than a very good coach is disingenuous or delusional based on emotional bias.

  392. By Parkway on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

I agree it was 99% Favre. A good coach doesn’t give away a 3rd round pick for Moss then let him go without letting anyone know. We could have got a starter for that 3rd round pick instead of 4 worthless games with Moss.

That was an interesting article to read but I don’t agree that Ponder has the arm strength. And if he is SUCH a smart guy I don’t get why he makes REALLY dumb decisions in his second year still.

On the one hand you say it was not Chilly but all Favre,
then you say Chilly was a poor coach for letting Moss go

Sure he can have some credit for Favre, but I’m guessing Favre wasn’t all him. Moss WAS all him and it was a terrible choice. That’s only a small example of why he wasn’t a good coach. As someone else mentioned, it took Seattle a few games to figure out T joke wasn’t good and it took Chilly 4 years to figure it out. But I know your just trying to stir things up and there’s no way a person with any football knowledge or intellect could possibly think he was a good coach. so we can say how good Troy Williamson and Bernard Brick hands are while we’re at it too.

Remember the Dallas playoff game– 33-3? Or the near win at the Superdome and how well we played at that most difficult place to play? Childress. Sheer genius.

  403. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

Not so sure on Moss being a terrible choice– 27 teams passed on him, wasn’t it something like that after we let him go? And the the Titans didn’t even use him. So 90% of the teams, including genius Belicheck did not want Moss at that time– so Childress’s terrible choice was a reflection of the entire National Football League’s coaches same rationale? HA HA HA HA. Everyone wants to belittle Childress, but truthfully– the guy was a great coach for us–

  404. By Alex on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

Titus I think the problem people have is that we could have kept Moss around at least until the end of the year rather than completely getting rid of him mid season since we traded a 3rd round pick for him. There are times when Childress would make me say wow he is smart, and then there were the other times that left me confused and thinking he was an idiot. Overall I think he was an ok coach defiantly not bad but not great either in my eyes. Frazier on the other hand I really really like.

H.M.G., you don’t know squat about football. 200 passing and 100 rushing wins nothing, except if you are counting on your defense to score points, no turnovers and a top 5 defense. 200 passing and 100 rushing is a game manager type qb. you very seldom win games with game manager qb’s

  426. By DrinkHeavy on Nov 4, 2012 | Reply

Call me crazy, but I think the Vikes will win a close one today. This team has a tendency to come away with wins when no one expects them to. I think this is one of those games. If Ponder can get the ball to his TEs consistently and AP can get 100 yds, we might be able to steal one here. Tip your cap to Seattle, they have beaten GB, Pats and Dallas, but they aren’t exactly a juggernaut (yet). This is the defining game of the season for Frazier and this young team..let’s see if Les has them ready to play after an extended week of prep. GO Vikes!

It is the big men that make it possible for the little guys to “make plays.”

    2. Can our “D” stop the run without getting burned in the secondary?!

I feel like this game is a must win for acouple of reasons……….

    1. I think the lions team we will face next week is a different Lions team that we beat already!

    2. Confidence! We win this game…I think we beat the lions and go into the bye week with CONFIDENCE. We get some rest and come out of the bye with the engine going…….lose this game today….I believe that we lose next week and this season starts to get fugly real quick!

If you did not notice are team is BUILT AROUND THE RUN. We do not need 300 plus p@ssing yards to win. As long as Ponder does not may many mistakes the Vikings could easily win with him throwing for 200 yards a game. Because with Peterson you never know when he will break one.
