Mistral Raymond Moves Closer To Return

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 30, 2012 – 6:20 am

After an intense and thorough competition throughout the offseason, training camp and the preseason, the Vikings chose Mistral Raymond as one of their two starting safeties to begin the season. Early in Week 3, though, the Vikings had to find a replacement for their choice. Raymond suffered what appeared to be a very serious ankle injury early in the Vikings home game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The injury was severe enough to keep Raymond away from the football field for several weeks, but now it appears Raymond is inching closer to a return and could be on the field for this Sunday’s game in Seattle.

“It looks that way,” Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier said on Monday. “We need to get him through an entire week of practice, we’re going to give him a little bit more this week and then we’ll make a decision later in the week. All indications are he’s improved enough where he can go through everything in practice. But he still hasn’t done that.”

Just as important as participating in practice, the Vikings will closely monitor how Raymond’s body responds after a practice.

“When we put him through the paces and what we’re doing with seven-on-seven, team, individual work, group, whatever we’re doing, just to see how he responds on Thursday after a Wednesday practice and then Friday after a Thursday practice,” Frazier explained. “Because it will be much more intense for him than it has been as we integrate him into everything that we’re doing.”

Speaking of what the Vikings are doing, the defense has made subtle changes since Raymond left the lineup in Week 3. The 2nd-year safety will have to make adjustments on that end, too.

“We’ve got a few changes in what we’re doing from earlier in the season when he was starting, but he shouldn’t have a problem picking up some of those little nuances,” Frazier said. “But we also have to see how he’s doing physically, as well. How he plants, how he cuts and how he responds the day after one of those practices.”

The news on Monday was good because it’s clear Raymond is progressing and it’s clear he will be back soon, something that seemed unlikely at the moment he injured the ankle. But it’s also clear the Vikings will be careful in how they work Raymond back into the mix.

    FINALLY !!!…

We are talking about Mistral Raymond !!!!…

Since the vikes need some help ,maybe they should call T O or Oucho .. we need something to take the pressure off the run game. Harvin is being doubled must of they time. There is no surprise factor , maybe bring in Webb and run the wildcat with the speed package. Offense is to predictable!!

Having Mistral back will be nice…

But Sherels adds some “sure” tackling talents, and a nose for always being around the football, all over the field…

Cook will be missed…But hoping little Sherels can come in and add solid depth in the secondary…

Lets just say, if Sherels comes in and makes some big plays for us…This fan will not be surprised…

    OTK –

    I completely aggree with you.

Sherels has some potential to be great. I think with a little time on the field he will get better and better. He was pretty much the only good thing in our secondary all of last season, only one out there making plays. But now we have our starters back so they didn’t play him as much.

I see Sherels being in a starter role next season . I like what he can do, and he is a good tackler also

I herd that Jarius wright stayed after practice yesterday to prepare for his nfl debut.. I think it will be a good thing to activate him so we cn cut hm lose and let him get a few catches and mayb a touchdown n his first game. I think we need to throw deep to hm on a few plays also.

    troyboy…

I think we as fans can forget about having a receiver come in and replace Jenkins ???…

Even the teams playing against us know how terrible he is…The only stats Jenkins has had this season…Is “garbage time” stats…Late in the 4th quarter…When the opposing team has the game, well in hand for the win…

I think teams are actually feeding a few stats Jenkins way…Just so Frazier and Musgrave are foolish enough, to think Jenkins is actually doing something out there…

Jenkins can’t out jump CB’s anymore…He hasn’t done a good job blocking for anyone…And has absolutely not had ANY separation on his routes…

J Wright or Summers could do a lot more, than what Jenkins has been doing…There isn’t an opposing team or fan out there, that doesn’t know that…The only people that don not…Is Frazier and Musgrave ???…

But it is…What it is…It’s Frazier and Musgraves jobs to lose…Making adjustments through out the season…What has been done…And changes, that have not been made…Will notes all go into Speilmans little black book…

Head coaches make decisions during the season about which players to use…GM’s make decisions, about head coaching decisions, after the season is over…

Fans see a glaring issue at WR…Does Speilman wonder why no changes have been made at WR ???…

    Like I said…Maybe Jenkins is a buddy…I have no idea…

But the buddy system doesn’t win championships

GDP…That is ANOTHER reason to get a decent WR out there to help out this season…

Percy is our only good WR on the field right now…Nothing even close to his talent levels…If nothing changes ???…Percy might hold out for a “kings ransom” in the off season…

Knowing the Vikings have ZERO options, outside of his talents…

Give wright a chance. The worst that could happen is we go back to Jenkins, which we already are doing. All the rookies that we play haven’t disappointed so far, and I don’t think wright will either.

I would rather our team and front office use what we have in Burton, Wright, Sommers, shadu, Simpson and Jenkins to aliviate Harvin this season and Draft a WR next year. Instead of spending a bunch of money we don’t have on another attitude adjustment like D Bowe. We are going to need that money at the end of the season to “PAY PERCY” because if AP calls him the best in the NFL you better believe Harvin thinks it too. He is going to get a rediculous amount of Money, want to make sure we can make him an offer to make sure he stays here. It’s important to not spend money now, so we can spend it on players that really matter to this organization. We have not had a Franchise WR since Moss.. We need Harvin to stay.

    PAY PERCY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    DRAFT A WR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TELL CHILDS WE NEED HIM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vikes may be interested in Steve Smith(Rams) or Amendola of the Rams. The rumor got started with wrong “Smith” lol

  13. By sandiamond on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

In KC the word is a third-round draft pick for Dwayne Bowe. Vikings would have to initiate talks

  14. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

Both players Steve Smith (Rams) and Amendola would be good upgrades at our WR position…

If Amendola is healthy…I Would really like that choice… ; )

Both get “separation” in their route running…

If Amendola would not have gotten injured…He might have just as many receptions, as Harvin right now…

Very solid WR in Amendola…And would not cost the team an “arm and a leg” to have on the team…

  15. By sandiamond on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

Yep they would prefer Amendola but the Rams don’t want to part with him. We will have to see if Steve Smith(Rams) could be an option. I think players(Amendola) can be shipped out on their third year of a rookie contract

  16. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

But while Amendola has plenty of talent…He does have a history with injury problems…

So some injury risks may be a concern with a trade scenario with Amendola…

Harvin and Peterson get 90% of the plays, it is the same as putting 2 people on the field against there 11, defense’s aren’t dumb, Harvins turn then Petersons, and again and again! we need a new offensive coordinator, play caller, this is rediculous. Why not oucho and t.o both? pay them cheap salarys for the remaining of the year, anything but Peterson runs, Harvin short pass, Peterson run, Harvin short pass, duh. Ponders spending to much pondering! getting caught, loosing his touch, we need the Ponder who played in the first few games or experiment with Webb or the rookie!

  20. By BlueBird7 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

Would be great if Mistral could play in Seattle, however what I see in the article is No he won’t.

Harvin would ask for a “ridiculous ” amount of money? You mean like what Peterson recieved? Or other “Can’t- do-without-types?

Jackup the ticket prices, that bag of popcorn, or bottle of water. Wow, just like in the Movies.

  21. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

The Packers can make a trade for S Jackson from the Rams for a draft pick…

The Rams can then make a trade with the Vikings…Amendola for Gerhart…Straight up…

Rams get a starting young RB who can carry the load…

Vikings get some much needed WR help…

    Just a thought…

Don’t be fooled by the 96 million multi year contract total on AP’s contract ???…

The “real” structure of his contract is for 4 years…Just under 40 million, or so…And plenty of that guaranteed…(Been awhile…Can’t remember the exact numbers)…

If AP is still around after the first four years of his current contract ???…They will restructure that contract…From what it is now…

It still makes him one of the highest paid RB’s in league…

But AP is the best running back in the league…

  25. By BlueBird7 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

    OTK

Yes, he is, but then, Harvin is the best WR in the league, wouldn’t you say?

If he isn’t, Harvin is very close to it.

  26. By sandiamond on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

D Bowe seems like a good idea to me. He is a LSU product, deep threat wide receiver and even favors randy moss.
The Rams would get pick #97(trade-end of round) and Vikes would lose around the #80 pick assuming we finish at #16 for first round picking.
additional late rounder not much value. Then I think we have 2 picks in the 4th to make up for losing the 3rd

  27. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

    BB7…

Both players are elite at their positions…

Overall, WR’s get paid more than RB’s…Just the way it is…

Harvin will get paid…He will most likely see at least 25 million guaranteed with any contract he signs…

And you can be almost sure…The total contract will be double any guaranteed money…No matter the length in years signed…

So, no worries…Harvin will get paid…And paid well…

Harvin is a top ten receiver in this league…And will be paid like one…

    Just like AP did…

  28. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

Bowe is not an option…Third round draft pick or not…

Football is a team sport. The QB gets the blame the most because he has the most responsability . He has the ball the most so he needs to be as sharp as possible. Not everything is the QB’s fault, it just falls on his shoulders. Lifes not fair, neither is football.

  48. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

As you can see…Spencer wants to protect himself…

He wants Ponder to get sick at half time…

So he has something judge Ponders preformance on, compared to Webb could do ???…

The only way Webb goes in…Is if Ponder gets hurt…

Then Webb will lose every game going forward…I have no doubts about that…

Except maybe the Rams game later in the season…

Only way to stop that huge slide losses from happening with Webb, if Ponder was to get hurt…Would be to put in MBT at QB…MBT might have a chance to win a few games…

But Frazier would waste to much time on Webb (like they have already)…And lose too many games with Webb…Before Frazier made that move…

The thing with Ponder is…. when we run a spread offense it looks like he thrives in it. We may be doing him a dis-service by trying to protect things and be conservative. Give him more options, then let him check down if he needs to, plus he is athletic, he can run. Let the passing game open up the running game. AP wont care as long as we feed him the rock!!!!!

Hoping that Wright actually produces soon, and very soon, because this offense has become completely stale and predictable. If we could get another lightning quick receiver that defenses have to account for it will open up a lot of things on offense.

I think this was a problem last season…And might be starting up again…

I think defenses key on AP’s movements in the backfield…Or someone on offense…

AP is so quick to jump at the snap of the ball…Wish AP would try some delays on his moves (sometimes)…Before jumping out of his stance…Take some timing out of the reads on defense…

A little delay allows your o-line to open bigger holes also…

Just think AP is his own worst enemy sometimes…Being at the line of scrimmage before the O-line has time to push the defense around and open holes for him…

The O-line has been struggling of late…Are opposing defenses getting some kind of pre-snap read on our offense ???…

Something the coaches might want to look for, when watching the last few weeks game film ???…

Lively discussion today. The root of the problem may be Musgrave– sometimes he seems brilliant, other times vanilla. But is that due to lack of WR’s and an inexperienced Ponder? I don’t think so– we have shown enough talent to spar with the big boys. Spielman knows what we have in MBT– I am sure of it. MBT will lead us to three or four Superbowls — I just hope it is within our lifetimes.

  85. By H.M.G. on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

Yep Ponder is the guy who catches the ball the fumbles it on his on side of the field. He is also the guy who snaps the ball into the turf. He also punts 20 yard punts. Heck he is the guy who allowed Doug Martin to have over 200 yard and let RGIII run for that 73 yard TD.
Ponder is just so dang bad.

Ya Ponder is young and dumb, but the O-line has been pretty leaky on pass protection to say the least. But once again I say, I hope it is because we have alot of new faces and they are still learning to jell together. I really hope this is the case.

Right now there’s only 2 or 3 starting QB’s in the NFL worse than Ponder.

He has the potential to be much, much better…but not if he keeps regressing like this.

Ponder gives us the best chance to get to the playoff, Doesn’t he?

  97. By Spencer on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

What will define Ponders potential is how well he finishes the season. If he continues to play like he currently is then we should have reason for concern. I think the offense as a whole needs to get better starting with the line play.

I just find it funny how you guys say you cant properly judge a quarterback till after they played for 2-3 seasons, but gave up on Webb after just 3 games.

    Spencer,
I don’t think anyone is actually giving up on Webb. Webb is a great, great athlete, but if he wants to be a starter in the NFL he needs to get a lot more accurate with the football. Until he can improve, he will be a back up. Thats just the way it is. The new NFL is passing, passing, passing. Webb is lacking and it is holding him back.

Webb never had weapons, this time he does. There is no doubt in my mind that once he gets his chance he’ll prove the doubters wrong. Clearly Ponder is a better quarterback than Webb, but Webb gives this team the best chance to win.

I just don’t understand the Ponder needs more time argument when Webb has had even less time than Ponder.
Its hypocritical that we have to be patient with 1 guy but can totally write off the other guy even though he hasn’t had sufficient time either.

  109. By vikes or die on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

    Well Spencer,
The prove is in the pudding. Most QB’s these days don’t make it through the whole season. So, more then likely you will get your wish.

Just sit Jenkins and Shudo’s ass down for a few games…And find out Frazier ???…

  111. By Parkway on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

@Spencer: And part of the reason we drafted Ponder at 12 overall is because he was supposed to be NFL ready. In year two, he should be making plays and figuring stuff out we shouldn’t be hoping he doesn’t lose us games. Webb was a 6th round pick. If Webb had been starting for two years by now then MAYBE we would be accepting the “give him time” argument since he was more of an upside potential pick.

  112. By Spencer on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

Something I notices was that Freeman made throws and forced them over 15 yards down field with velocity and pretty good accuracy. Ponder doesn’t seem to have an arm for that AT ALL. I can’t think of any down field ropes from Ponder to be honest. Not one. Sure, he needs time to develop…but right now he’s lost and looks like he can’t throw it like most NFL QBs can. We either have a OC who is NEVER calling pass plays over the middle or Ponder just never makes the throws. There is something absolutely missing from our Offense and everyone sees it. You guys say be patient but usually you get to see a flash or two from your QB right? We’re not seeing much at all.

  113. By viking181164 on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

This give and take back and forth on who should do what is going nowhere.

Webb is a Terrible QB an even worse WR and the only skill he has is to run the rock, and the only time he can do that and get away with it, is when everyone expects him to throw it, which he can’t do.. so end point… get rid of Webb!

Carlson would maybe actually catch a ball or two if he hadn’t injured himself before the season and now got a concussion and his career is probably done. Childs blowing out both of his knees, he would probably be starting by now. Cook going out for the rest of the season will now probably make our secondary leak like a sieve

Just cause a guy supports gay marriage doesn’t mean he’s gay or is a “fairy”. I agree that his play hasn’t been what we’re used to from him in the last few games, but to call the dude names because he stands up for what he believes in is pretty low.

  194. By Spencer on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

True but c’mon, the dude was posing wet, and shirtless in a gay magazine. What is accomplished by a heterosexual posing in a gay magazine?

  195. By iaVIKE on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

I found it odd too, but to each their own.

  196. By Alex on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

If that amendment doesn’t pass then it doesn’t mean that gay marriage is legal in the state it just means that they can discriminate against people who are gay if it does pass.

But I didn’t come here to talk politics just football, I think we need to get a different punter than Kluwe but is there someone we can pick up or would we have to wait until the draft?

Jarvis Jones most dynamic defensive football player in the country! hands down…. Vontaze Burfict, Jones and Manti Te’o recurited by USC at the same time. what a tandem that would have made!!

Vikes need 1 of these linebackers! I screamed 100o times for burfict

We sign Plax and TO tomorrow. We get rid of Kevin Williams and Toby for a 3rd and 5th round pick. We trade shadu and jenkins for a 7th round pick. We give the third round to KC for Bowe and have enough room to sign him to a 4 year deal and leave enough room to sign percy to a big deal next year.

Ponder will be bench this game and MBT will play for a while. Im right i am always right (i think)
Titus just like to manioulate us to the way he thinks. i noticed that.

MBT wont b our future QB c’mon be smart he wont even start more than 7 games in his career. Ponder or get another draft or someone that is in our league for a while. i except ponder to be a great QB in the future not now though remember this.

  202. By True Vikes Fan on Oct 30, 2012 | Reply

1st off about Webb obviously he is not the answer because he had his chance to start in 6 games of the 2010 season, that’s why the vikes used their first round pick to get christian to replace him and then also picked up mcnabb and obviously MBT isn’t as good as y’all predict him to be because hes been bounced around practice squads the past couple years but he could be a great back-up
    Ponder>MBT>Webb

WE STILL NEED TO BUILD ON OUR O LINE, BUT FIRST PRIORITIES ARE WR & CB (FOR DEPTH OR A SHUT-DOWN CB) WITH AS MUCH SPEED & HEIGHT AS POSSIBLE. WE’LL SEE THOSE TALL CB’s IN SEATTLE!

HOPE EVERYONE WATCHES RICK’S BABY BRO CHRIS SPIELMAN ON NFL CHANNEL’S “A FOOTBALL LIFE” TONIGHT! IN MY BOOK SPIELMAN – AS I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS – HAS BEEN AN A- IN HIS DRAFTS. Man you guys on here really do turn in a hurry.

Kluwe, who has been one of the best punters over the last five years has had maybe one or two bad games since then. and all of the sudden he is “the worst punter in the league” either your all joking or or the bar served you one to many last night… The guy is best in the league, BEST proven by statistical spread sheets with pinning oppsing Offenses in or behind their own 20 yrd line. No other Punter has a better record of that.

As far as his off the field antics, yeah he is a little loud. But I too am a loud person. Lashing out at someone based on creed, sexuality, religion or otherwise, proves that you are close minded and predigest. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. I honeslty don’t care what you believe, but keep it to yourself or during your own personal conversation. not everyone agrees with you guys, so please be mindful of the rest of the world, not all of us are close minded, and may actuallly be affended by things said. Some of the things that were said would warrant an azz whoopin in my opinion. Regardless to what I may agree with on the football talks, I will never believe in bullieing someone because of thier beliefs, thats really low.

  240. By Titus the One on Oct 31, 2012 | Reply

Muskyfever, I am not lashing out at Kluwe or anyone– but I feel he is assuming everyone agrees with him and he is in the right. He is the one lashing out at those who do not believe what he believes. Cannot have it both ways.

That point I agree with Titus, but you can’t express your opinion on an internet forum blog about such a touchy subject and expect people with opposing opinions to keep thier mouth shut.

All I am trying to say is maybe we should keep talks llike this with people you know and trust in a private situation and not put it out there on an internet forum. I don’t care what you do or don’t believe in, I just think you expressed your thoughts in the wrong place without knowing how “some” people would react

I aggree with Spencer above…how can you say you have Webb figured out but need more time to properly eval Ponder. People need to get over where each player was picked in the draft and play the best man, which is Webb. This is about winning…..not about pride. We ALL know that Ponder was a huge risk going so early in the draft. We all know he is not a first round talent. Les needs to quit flogging a dead horse, swallow his pride, admit Ponder is not the answer and move on. We are wasting time on this as we are moving into the tough part of the schedule.
