Frazier Counting On Fans To Help Team In Quick Turnaround

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 22, 2012 – 6:17 am

NFL coaches encourage their players to spend some time enjoying a hard-fought win before they turn their attention to the next opponent. Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier wants his team to enjoy their latest win – a 21-14 decision over Arizona – but he also knows his players and fellow coaches must work hard and work fast early this week because the Vikings will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night in a game that will be televised by NFL Network.

Players will have the day off on Monday before coming back to the team’s facility on Tuesday to prepare for the game. Coaches, of course, will have no such luxury and are already at work in preparing for Thursday’s game. When asked about the quick turnaround during his post-game press conference on Sunday, Frazier explained his team’s plan for the next two days and also explained how he’ll rely on Vikings fans to help his team come through the short week on the winning end.

“We’ll slow it down a little bit,” Frazier said. “They’ll have the day off tomorrow (Monday) to try to get some rest, and then we’ll come back on Tuesday and go to work and try to digest this game plan and come out at home on Thursday night and play a good football game in front of our fans here at Mall of America Field.”

Playing in front of their fans at Mall of America Field has been a good thing in 2012. After going just 1-7 at home last season, the Vikings are 4-0 at Mall of America Field this season. In home games this season, the Vikings defense is allowing just 14.2 points per game, the team is scoring 25.2 points per contest and the team is positive in the take-give ratio.

Frazier has never hesitated to acknowledge the impact Vikings fans have on opposing teams at Mall of America Field. He experienced it as an opposing player and coach for many seasons, and now he’s benefiting from it as Vikings Head Coach. With his team playing on a short week and looking to improve to 6-2 through the first half of the season, Frazier knows it’s important to utilize the great home-field advantage Mall of America Field can provide.

“Our fans have been terrific,” Frazier said. “We’re going to need them to be noisy on that Thursday night and have this place filled up. We want to take advantage. We feel like when we play at home, we have a chance to be a special football team. And we want to get like that on the road, but for now, being at home on Thursday night, we want to take advantage of it here at Mall of America Field.”

Another big win for the Vikings!! 5 and 2 is a great start. However, Ponders play does worry me alittle. 58 yards passing and throwing the ball “up for grabs”can not continue if this team wants to make a playoff run!!

I do like Ponder. I think he will be a good QB. Unfortunatly his play yesterday was his worst game of the year. We won that game in spite of his poor performance. I no hes young,i get that, but he needs to make much better decisions with the ball than he did yesterday.

I have to say its official, PETERSEN IS BACK!!! He looked awesome. Way to go AP. You really stepped up and carried the load and ran us to the victory. And Harvin, wow is he pushing for the MVP this season. Great job guys!!

Its time to move on people…

Yes…Ponder made a very bad, very bad play before halftime…

Throwing the ball on the run and into traffic from our own 20 yard line, with 14 seconds left on the clock…

But who sent in that dumb play call ???…

Who was the goofy ref that allowed that interception to stand ???…A play that clearly showed the football hitting the ground and rolling up the defenders side, before finally securing the football…

Ponder and Musgrave will be kicking themselves over and over about that play call…They don’t really need our help in reminding them…

    Yep…Ponder had a bad day..Learn from it…And more importantly…Move on…

    OtKalil,
I think alot of the negative comments in the last two blogs, is because people seem to have forgotten how good the Cardinals defense is. On both of those interceptions by Ponder, I felt like the average qb would have been sacked. The kid has great escapabilty, just needs to get rid of it out of the pocket or put alot more zip on the ball in tight quarters.

I thought the Cards defense…Played us tougher yesterday, than the 49ers did when they were in town…

    That Cardinal defense was swarming…

Just glad our defense played just a little bit better…

Smith’s interception, was what tipped the scales in the Vikings favor…

  25. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 22, 2012 | Reply

It was obvious the Cardinal defense intended to stop the passing game and Harvin…

But what they didn’t expect, was AP having a HUGE day running the ball…From going hard after Ponder…

AP exploited the big running lanes that opened up…Along with making a few of his own… : )

  26. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 22, 2012 | Reply

The Vikings are a VERY young team…

But defenses are starting to have too, “pick your poison” a little defending this young team…

Do you go after Ponder and max protect Harvin…And take your chances defending the holes that open up for AP ???…

Or do you put 8 in the box or more…And try to shut down the running game with AP first on the list ???…

That is why, I would love to see the Vikings add a WR to that mix…It would make this young team VERY dangerous !!!…

Not a big time star…Harvin needs his money after this season…Can’t pay to big name receivers…

But there are plenty of receivers out there…That can offer more than Jenkins or Shudo is providing this team…

i have yet to see the Carlson Project work as far as on the passing side seems capable in the run blocking scheme and Jerome Simpson has much to prove as I see it the Vikes did him a favor in taking a chance on him with his extra baggage but with that said he may be a good number 2 option but i hafta say I like the Dwayne Bowe idea because even if Jarius Wright and Greg Childs develop in2 quality receivers they r currently afar off from there and Dwayne Bowe could come in and contribute day 1. I had my eye on him along with Vincent Jackson last year in free agency

Anyone who is calling for Ponder to be benched in place of Webb needs to get off the LSD because your delusional if thinking that will improve our offense. We are 5-2 so stop complaining. Ponder’s performance wasn’t good yesterday by any means. Eveyone like the Drew Bree’s, Peyton Mannings, Aaron Rodger’s have subpar games from time to time. We only made 17 pass attempts in the game which is very low. We got the win and that’s what counts. If Ponder was playing like this every week there would be concern, he’ll bounce back. It’s nice to see that we play as a “team” and everyone is doing there part. Like our defense stepping up when the offense wasn’t doing well. If we can fire on all cylinders at the same time, we’re going to be a force to wreckon with.

  38. By Parkway on Oct 22, 2012 | Reply

I’d say Bowe has about a 98% chance of not being with KC after the trade deadline so let’s make a run at him!

Do you want Harvin to start worrying about getting paid ???…Instead of just playing football the rest of this season…

    Then go get Bowe…

Vikings will not be paying out well over 100 million in contracts…To 2 big name receivers…

Bowe is mad at KC…Because he is playing under the franchise tag…He wants a shiny new contract…And lots of bonus money…

Vikings need to PAY PERCY !!!…They can’t afford both…

If the Vikings go get Bowe…And Bowe signs a big contract this season with the Vikings, before Percy ???…

All he!! breaks loose !!!…locker room headaches begin…

Vikings need a serviceable WR, they can just continue that players “current contract”…

Not to mention…KC would want at least a 1st and 3rd round draft picks this coming spring for his rights…

Spielman would never do that…And he shouldn’t do that…

We still on the roof or no roof thing. That’s funny the roof is on the new stadium. It’s part of the agreement with the State of MN. The cost of a retractable roof would have to be paid entirely by the Wilfs and agreed to by the Stadium Authority. I would assume there will be some kind of guarantees if the Wilfs sell the team as the retractable roof has some hefty maintenance cost associated with it. I would say the possibility of retractable roof is about 50 50.

As i said in previous blog for those Ponder doubters, he will not be benched anytime soon. The team is going to give him time to resolve issues and learn to be a better QB. With Webb in the wings too many Fans think we should through Ponder under the buss. Webb is not a pocket passer, which is the fit Frazier wants from his QB. So I am sure we will stay with Ponder this year and see what the outcome is. It is time the rest of you see this too.

Ponder, we have faith in you and we know your potential. Just stay calm and remain focused. The earlier games in the season you mentioned not forcing things. You have more than enough weapons to throw the ball away and have a shot the next down. You’re a smart athletic quarterback and we know what you and the Vikings squad are capable of! SKOL!!!

I agree with HMG about giving Ponder a break. The man has been really good up to last game and he has had to deal with some unique defenses. Im not saying that his game yesterday was by any means good as he did throw some bone-headed stuff (Which he knows), but for the most part he is playing heads up football. he just needs to thrwo the ball away rather than get pressured into making the play when there is none. He will bounce back. He needs us fans to show him support now more than ever. In fact, I was disappointed on the offensive line much of the game as it looked like Ponder was running for his life way too much. Even when Arizona was only brining three people- thise 3 were getting penetration too much. Thursday it is not going to get any easier. Tampa beat us last year (I was at that game) when we blew the lead we had all game. We need to score early and often and protect our QB. Our defense is going to do well this week. Skol Vikes! I Bleed Purple…. Nuf said…

    1. Ponder is smart. He’ll be fine.
    2. Let TE Carlson heal. However many weeks he needs to heal, he’s gotta show what he’s got sometime.
    3. I would like to hear from the wide receiver coach regarding the team’s chances to move forward if Vikes get into the playoffs (minus Harvin).
    4. I think the defense and special teams have improved a lot but the offense need some help if team wants to go deep into the playoff picture.

Imagine you are Frazier-Musgrave-Ponder at the half. You come in with a 14 to 7 lead after dodging a turnover bullet – one that you intended to throw out-of-bounds but a good play by their defense resulted in the int. Your own defense is playing very well and holding the opposition in check. Then. on the first series of the second half, your defense scores on a pick-six. You feel that you can win this game if you don’t beat yourselves. WINNING IS EVERYTHING! What do you do? Do you put the ball up for grabs or do you “ground and pound” to try to salt away the win? I’ll take the win, thank you very much!

What is going on with the receivers, i said it before and i’ll say it again,Percy and A.P are going to end up getting burned out if they don’t get any help. We need these guys to stay fresh down the stretch. Where is Simpson he’s a good athletic receiver. How about Jarius Wright had a great pre-season game against Houston. Did he disappear? Burton, Jenkins and Armoshadu have to go. Plexico is out there and he’s probably cheap, big guy that can stretch the field. Ponder is got to throw it down the field. Offense passing is too conservative.

I got chills watching the Matt Blair’s press conference. Wow, I’m so glad he got in the ring of honor. He was such a great Viking on defense and special teams. He really epitomized the smart Vikings play of the 1970s.

This was the first time I ever heard him talk. What a terrifically humble man. I hope this was not lost on the local media.

That’s the great thing about being a Vikings fan, we have such a rich history going all the way back to 62. And those Bud Grant teams and the Purple People Eaters and Sir Francis (as Cosell once called him) and the Old Met and the snow and all those gritty hard nosed players like Matt Blair.

I really hope this is not lost on our current ownership. In fact, I really think they should find more ways to remind us of those old teams and times. I hope this new stadium has some old Met accents. And if we have to have a dome stadium, please make it have a retractable roof so our team can play in the elements that they were always known for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was our home field advantage. The weather and those gritty and hard nosed weather beaten Vikings teams made the team one of the most memorable teams of the 1970s. Bring this back Mr. WIilf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS – I’d love to be the curator of the team museum! Mark and Zigi, gimme a call!!!!

Quickly. Everyone watch Mr. Johnson (74). Always seems to be picking up Ponder after he gets beaten badly by the pass rush. It was the same way at tackle last year as it is this year at guard. Otherwise it was a good win against a tough defense.

Run AP all day then take him out and run him some more. The Dude simply saved our A$$ the other day. IF if wasn’t for his outstanding rushing,we would have lost that game.Mr.Ponder was nowhere to be found that day. His head must have been in his new girlfriends pants.

With wins against the Lions, 49ers, Cardinals… I see some good things with the team. If we can beat the Bucs I will be confident we are a threat. Tough games against the Seahawks and Lions will follow. Let’s win all 3!!! Bucs first!! Let’s go vikes!

Spencer finally got something right! UNLEASH JOE WEBB-but not at QB. Seriously, Spencer, you’re going to convince anybody Webb better than Ponder? No way. But a year has gone by, why hasn’t he been groomed as WR? He could be better than Burton, Aromashadu, and Jenkins. ATHLETE, SOMETHING! Coulda kept Sage as #2, seems like Webb’s talent is being wasted. But back to you Spencer, 9 times outta 10 you negative. 5-2 when everybody was only givin them 5 on the entire season. Shut your mouth before I take a big dump in it.

Libertarianism is like communism. Great in theory, doesn’t work in reality. Although I can appreciate the social aspects of libertarianism, on the economic side it’s silly to think that the elimination of government means freedom. It just transfers power from the government to the rich property owners. And I trust them least of all.

  110. By Parkway on Oct 22, 2012 | Reply

Are you claiming that’s what Ron Paul is? Because it’s really not, though that’s what the media would have you think. Go research what he really stands for and get back to us.

    ————————————————————————————-

I’ve said it once, and i’ll say it again.

Ponder is the better quarterback, but Webb gives us the best chance to win. Just like how Kyle Orton was the better QB, but Tebow gave the Broncos the best chance to win.

I don’t know Ron Paul chapter and verse, but I’ve seen enough to know there are clear deficiencies there. Like I indicated, I like some of the things he is willing to say, but the economics is simplistic. It’s clouded by the ideology of libertarianism. If you want to say that Paul has got it all figured out (which is kind of what it sounds like), then I think that is mistaken.

I’m stoked about the Vikes playing the Bucs on Thursday! Our team is doing really well. I’m not going to dog Ponder, I think he’s doing fine. He’s not doing as great as I would like, but he’s definitely progressing. Everyone is going to have their off days. Also Ponder is the type to look at footage of himself, take constructive criticism and work hard to fix his short comings, and that is the type of QB I like. Over all I’m please with the Vikings! SKOL!

That’s all it ever is Titus and the only reason Obama got elected is because everyone sat and hung on his charismatic generalizations. It’s not that hard to seem like a silver-tongued genius after dubya really, but no politician ever really does what they say they are going to and basically all candidates are part of the illuminati anyway so it’s picking one evil over another and we will still all be slaves of what they want us to know versus what is actual reality.

I wana see the vikings go after Wr Devery Henderson from. The saints for a 4th or 3round pick in 2013 draft. If not that then why not go after Plaxico burress.. I’m. 4sho that we will cause defenses problems If we did.
No matter what I think a wide reciever should be signed before the deadline is over…

  146. By demflyboyz on Oct 22, 2012 | Reply

With John Carlson out, Rhette Ellison will see more playing time and he will be a big factor..

Next year. I think we will be in the superbowl or deep in the playoffs, because next year we will be deep at wide reciever.. When Greg childs return I think he will have a big season.. with 9ths for 847 yards 64 catches
And next year jarius wright will be in the game more… and plus when we draft a reciever in the draft next year .. I rather the vikings to draft Cordarelle Patterson. He is very similar to percy, he is dangerous on the kickoff return, run game, and catchin the ball.. but he is 6;3 and he run a 4.39

I’m all in favor of keeping Ponder in there because Webb is not a pocket passer however with that being said I feel the Vikings are wasting Webb’s talent on the sideline! Also a couple other things I find troubling. 1 Why is Jarius Wright made inactive every week when he is not injured? We just drafted this guy & haven’t even played him what sense does this make! 2 Why did we give such an enormous contract to carlson who is injury prone? This one baffles me!!! Anyway I love the 5 & 2 record!!!! Let’s add another W this Thursday & come out Healthy!!!!!!!!!!! SKOL VIKINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
