Redskins QB Griffin III (Concussion) Expected To Practice Wednesday

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 10, 2012 – 9:45 am

As we mentioned right off the bat in Wednesday morning’s “9 Vikings-Redskins Storylines To Follow,” Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III is currently recovering from a concussion he suffered in last week’s game against the Atlanta Falcons and his status for this week’s game against the Vikings is uncertain. Early reports out of Washington, however, suggest that the Redskins rookie passer is on track to return to the field in time to start against the Vikings.

Griffin III took a nasty – but clean – hit from Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon in the 3rd quarter of last week’s game, forcing the Redskins to pull him from the game. He was diagnosed with a concussion and is now going through the NFL’s mandated concussion protocol. Long story longer, Griffin III must take and pass a series of tests before he’s permitted to return to the field for practice or a game.

The Redskins have not commented publicly on when Griffin III may return. According to this Washington Post report from Mark Maske, though, it’s expected that Griffin III will return as soon as Wednesday to practice with his teammates. While Maske cites a person close to the situation as his source for the report, he also notes that Griffin III’s participation in practice does not guarantee his availability for Sunday. The NFL and its teams are careful in dealing with injuries, particularly head injuries, and the protocol that exists actually takes the decision out of the hands of the individual team and puts it into the hands of independent medical experts.

The bottom line is, this is a story that will persist all week as the Vikings and Redskins prepare to face one another. Early indications are that Griffin III will be ready to play.

Other Injury Notes
– Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier disclosed on Monday that RB Adrian Peterson had a slight ankle sprain in last week’s win over the Titans. Frazier said Peterson was able to play through the injury and that he expects Peterson to play on Sunday, but that the injury may limit what the Vikings ask Peterson to do in practice this week.

– As of early Wednesday morning, there’s nothing new to report on Jerome Simpson’s leg condition. Frazier indicated on Monday that the injury may have something to do with Simpson’s back. Frazier will certainly be asked about this on Wednesday morning during his regular press conference.

– It’s expected that LB Marvin Mitchell (calf) and S Andrew Sendejo (ankle) will return to practice this week.

– Frazier said QB Christian Ponder moved around just fine on Sunday and that there doesn’t appear to be a problem with his knee.

NFL power rankings have Vikings up to the 8th spot. Looks like we are finally gaining some respect. As for Shanahan. I’ve never really liked him. Maybe it’s that Parrott Eye he has.

I feel bad for RG3…Because after watching football for many, many years…A fan will see a QB get a concussion…And totally get the “deer in the headlights” look after being hit, and be sitting there dazed on the sidelines the rest of the game…Like RG3 did last week…

And you know, if that same QB goes out there the next week after having his bell rung that hard…He is going to be in for a world of hurt…

Quick decisions are not there…Correct decisions are not there…One hit…And that QB could be out for weeks…Instead of just one game…

I wouldn’t play RG3…But with the Skins being at 2-3 in the standings…What will the Redskins do ??…

I like that we are moving up in the power rankings. But I feel that if for whatever reason we lose we will be right back in the 20th spot. Where as teams like GB lose 3 time and somehow are still in the top 20… Just saying…

    @OTKalil2012
    ESPN has the new.
Turn out that right now instead of surgery they will try some rehab. If that does not work then surgery.
Either way get well soon Mr. Simpson.

It blows seeing any player young or old getting concussions. Unless they are Cheeseheads or Aints from the token Super Bowl team.

Honestly I think Shannahan is a cheap shot coach, if he could cheat all day and get away with it he would. That man has no regard for peoples health, only for winning. Thats why he benches people after one or two bad plays. Does he get numbers out….? sure, sometimes… But at his players expense. Personally I think he should be suspended indefiantly. I have never liked him for a lot of reasons and these are just some of them.

Even if RGIII said that he didn’t feel comfortable playing… Shannan would make sure he was in the line up

If Simpson does have a need for back surgery, it puts him and the Vikings in a tough situation. He’s under a one yr contract, with everyone thinking after 8 or 9 games we could sign him to a long term deal.
Now, he’s got all the talent in the world but has barely been on the field, so we’ll just have to see how it goes. I wish him well.

Vikings need a deep threat…Jenkins and Aromashudo can’t fill that HUGE void…Now Simpson is hurt…

Burton has been iffy, at best trying to get open…

Bring Summers up from the practice squad ???…

Rick Spielman…We don’t need superman to help out at the WR position…But get some help for this “contending” team !!

But isn’t there ANYBODY sitting on a practice squad around the league, that can help out this 53 man roster for a few weeks ???…

Get our scout department checking into some young talent sitting on some teams practice squads…Our average at best, WR veterans are not getting the job done…

I know this will sound absolutely crazy !!!…

But if Sherels is the fastest player on our team…And has great hands catching the ball…

Why not have Sherels come in, and run some post patterns for the offense…

One throw over the top to Sherels for a TD…The Vikings look like geniuses !!!…

If nothing else…Just air a pass out and overthrow him, if he can’t run the pass down…

With just having Sherels kind of speed over there at WR…Will loosen the defense for other players…

    Whether he is short…Or not… ; )

Time to get another deep threat, Simpson hurt, we cant go 6 weeks waiting for him to heal with out a deep threat! can’t just dump the work load on Harvin & Peterson.

Im not so sure, we didnt have him the first three games and did ok. Simp has really only played one game for us and we are 4 and1. As long as Ponder plays as well as he has he will be just fine with the recievers we have.We also have Wright healthy and we havent even seen what he can do yet. Everybody is so quick to can all our young recievers. I dont get it?

  23. By JE on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

Im with you OTKalil. Stay with the young hard working guys we have on the roster. When we get JSimpson back it will be right after the bye week where we start to play division games. Perfect timing. Good QB play will make these recievers look just fine.

Who knows, maybe JSimpson wont need the surgery, but if he does i say do it now and get it over with and get him on the road to recovery as soon as possible. We could have him back right after the bye and be ready for a late season run against our division rivals.

Again, why go away from Aroshmudu and SBurton? Why did we draft Jarius Wright?? I say play em!!!!

The GB and Bears games come after the bye week…We need a healthy Simpson for those games…

Why play the wait and see game…If surgery is needed now, or after the season ends…Then get the surgery done now…

Do what is best for Jerome !!!…That is the main thing here…

    Get well soon !!!…Jerome…

    I chuckled when I saw that too BB7… ; )

That would be an awesome deal…Just hope to find someone to help out our horses in Harvin and AP…

They can’t keep taking on such a huge load…They will start wearing down…

I really don’t understand, why Toby isn’t seeing the ball more ??…There is a very long season ahead…

  31. By JE on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

OTK, I just hope they are doin the right thing. We need Simpson down the stretch and if this thing pops back up later in the season he could be done for the year. What if we were to make the playoffs and have no Simpson?? I dont even want to go there. If he doesnt need the sugery thats great but if its a coin toss i say do it now

  32. By JE on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

Yea thats another thing. I wouldnt mind seeing more carries for Toby. It is a long season and Toby needs to take more of the load in the running game and they need to get JWright in the slot and give Harvin a break!! I no its hard to take those guys out but you just have to manage how many touches these guys get alittle better.

  33. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

We needed help at WR while Simpson was out for 3 games…

We still need help at WR with Simpson injured…

We still will need depth at WR if Simpson makes it back in time after the bye week…To make a run for the division title…

Rick Spielman…Do you see a trend here ???…

Get some solid WR help for your contending team…

    Before it’s to late !!!…

TO and Burress! We could get both for less than we are paying Carlson and they might actually catch a ball who knows

  35. By JE on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

This is important at several positions on the team at the end of these games when we have a big lead. I no we are not in that situation alot but last week we were ahead by 3 touchdowns and they were still playin Peterson, Harvin and Jared Allen?? CMON MAN.!! We dont need stats, we need wins and healthy players!!!

  36. By JE on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

All 32 teams have passed on TO and Burress. Even the Jets who had Burress and need a reciever are not calling either one of them. Whats that telling you. There days of playing in the NFL are done!

  37. By Muskyfever on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

OK, here is a little something to clear the air for everyone who is not sure about what is going on.

AD: did not practice today due to a ankle sprain that he has been dealer with, however, will be on the field for Sunday’s game and will play

    J. Simpson: Did not practice today as a PRECAUTION. He will need to check with the Vikings medical staff on on Thursday morning. But Frazier said that he expects to see Simpson on the field for Sunday’s game. After further investigation, there is NO NEED for surgery. Rumors spread faster then wild fire… If it doesn’t come from the horses mouth… Then I straight don’t trust it. Simpson will more then likley PLAY on Sunday. No surgery needed, he woke up this morning feeling great and had absolutely no numbness what so ever in his leg…

So we will have both for sunday pended something rediculous

  38. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

The reason the Vikings defense is doing so well…

Is because of a YOUNG group of players in the secondary feeding off of each others energy !!!…

Why not do the the same thing with the receivers core…Harvin and Rudolf are both young…

We do not need any old diva veterans coming in and breaking up team chemistry…Not t all…

    Young talented players…

I have noticed when Harvin and Peterson are given a rest after going full-out for several plays they stand on the sideline chopping at the bit, rearing to get back into the fray. I guess they know when they are ready to continue.

I do agree with you on getting another receiver to spell Harvin.

And get Toby in there more often to give Peterson time to rest his leg.

Vikings come up to the line in a 4 WR set with an empty backfield…WHATS THIS !!…

The 2 outside receivers are Marcus Sherels and Josh Robinson !!…Simpson and Harvin running inside positions…

Shanahan is pacing the sidelines in total confusion…And calls a time out…His last of the second half… ; )

you want one of our CB’s to stretch the field like they did in NY for the Jets game with Cromartie? lol. I wish that ball would have been better thrown because he would have caught it and taken it in for 6. I am a fan of his. He has won many a game for me on Madden

  44. By OTKalil2012 on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

    Musky…

    Yes..Like with Cromartie …

Can you imagine having Sherels,Robinson, and Harvin on the field for a few plays a game…

And 4.41 forty Harvin, being the slowest of that group…And still having jumping Jerome out there also…

    Priceless !!!

This off-season I said that we should put J-Rob in the backfield and do a pitch play and watch him run for six.

The only issue I see with Dfensive players play on the Ofense. Is they are used to deliverying hits, not taking them… Its a whole different ball game when your not expecting it or don’t see it coming

If you really think about it,we are stacked on offense with a ton of talant. W e havent even used JWright, JWebb, and JSimpson on just afew plays. I cant wait to see us in a few more weeks when Ponder really gets this talented group of players rolling. That goes for Calson and Gerhart as well. As the season progresses so will Ponder and this multi talented offense.
