Frazier Says Henderson Out, Mitchell Starts

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 21, 2012 – 12:21 pm

Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier on Friday ruled LB Erin Henderson out of Sunday’s game. Henderson sat out of practice this week with a concussion. Frazier also said that 6-year veteran Marvin Mitchell will start for Henderson against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Vikings signed Mitchell this past offseason, and a big reason he was appealing to the Vikings was his experience not only on special teams but also on defense. Mitchell started 2 games at LB for the New Orleans Saints in 2009, the year they won the Super Bowl. Vikings Defensive Coordinator Alan Williams was asked about Mitchell on Thursday while meeting with reporters and said he feels comfortable with having Mitchell play a prominent role on defense.

“Marvin has been in ball games as a starter, he’s been in ball games as a backup, he’s played a lot of football so everything that happens is not new to him out there,” Williams said. “That gives me comfort and when he’s been in ball games, he’s performed well so that gives me comfort that it’s not all new to him and we’re not playing guys that have not played a lot of football. Marvin has so I feel good about that.”

With Henderson out, it’s expected that staring middle LB Jasper Brinkley will now stay on the field in nickel situations. Henderson is usual the “MIKE” LB in nickel, with Chad Greenway also on the field in those situations. Additionally, rookie LB Audie Cole stands a good chance of being active for his first NFL regular season game to provide depth on defense and perhaps play a role on special teams as well.

Frazier also ruled DE D’Aundre Reed (calf) out for the game, but said all others listed on the injury report – John Sullivan (ankle), Andrew Sendejo (ankle), CB Chris Cook (biceps), TE Rhett Ellison (ankle), Mitchell (ankle), Brian Robison (elbow) and Jarius Wright (ankle) – will likely be listed as probable.

Yes, now is the time in the early part of the season, to see how the new players like Audie Cole will perform. Play them NOW, not later when still green.

come out throwing..I don’t care what nobody says if we play our game we can win.. But we need to open up the playbook in the first half not with 8mins left in the 4th..

How is this for a new style game plan…

Start the game lining up with a 4 receiver set…

What would be new about that, you sak ???…

How about those receivers being all TE’s…Best pa ss catching group TE’s of any team in the league…

Set Rudolf out wide left…And bunch set Carlson,Ellison, and Reisner off to the right…

Play that physical and tall TE receiver core against the 49ers defense for the first series of the game…

    Rudolf..6′-6″..Carlson 6′-5″..Reisner 6′-3″..Ellison 6′-5″..

Frazier and Musgrave brag they have the best catching TE’s in football as a group…

    Why not prove it ???…

Why not the new guy!!! ??? 2 of the coachs played on the team with considered possibly the best defensive team ever, yuh think they could turn the Vikes D into a defense to remember.

  9. By OTKalil2012 on Sep 21, 2012 | Reply

    I had to laugh…

I was thinking if the Vikes did try that 4 TE set on offense starting out the first play of the game at the dome…

How funny it would be to play the song over the stadium loudspeakers…

“Let’s get physical” by Olivia Newton-John…hahaha…

    Wanna get physical 49ers defense ??… ; )

We can win easily– just let them play– open it up and not be so conservative. Being so cautious does not build confidence. Fire the team up and let ‘em loose to defend out turf. Forty Niners will go down!!!!

Frazier is a genius– he has been laying low these first two games, not to let the Niners see what we are really made of– he knew the Niners were at the third game, so if we did so so the first two, big deal– but to come out and annihilate the big bad Niners was in his plan all along– and then we are off to win the division.

I agree Kalil – not much sense in having 4 great tight ends if you won’t utilize them. They are not very intimidating from the sidelines. Vernon Davis is going to be running around like a mad man – give them a taste of their own medicine. I want to see Harbaugh’s head explode.

This is Frazier’s idea of a “Game Plan” during the week.
“Hey we got a “game’ what’s the “plan?”

To comment on the article though – seems we are thin at Linebacker. I know lets use the aged Veteran because he has experience…..sounds like McNabb 101 all over again.

Give me youthful guy with something to prove and let them wreak havoc. They won’t know what hit them.

I go with you Viking33, let the young kids play. NOT that I think a vet might play BETTER, we are NOT in any good condition at LB, but I want to develope guys as quickly as possible… it might be good to test them by fire. I am all for it for that reason alone! And hopefully he is an insance athlete enough that wants the job and wants to keep it!

As a fellow realist, I will just say we are lurking everywhere. We just tend to get shunned into the shadows because most people would rather avoid all of the difficulties that exist in the world.

You cannot win; it was predestined before time was conceived. The course is set, but as individuals we keep our innocence.

No one is innocent! And I don’t mean that in a religious sense. By the way, realism has no exact relation to greatness. Some would say that realism is the way to greatness. Then again greatness is usually a synonym for tyranny. It’s okay in football, but usually causes problems elsewhere.

Wow…. this conversation really got off the topic.

greatness and abject failure both have an important seat in reality – all points between. Fallibility and strengths are ingredients.

Vikes have all salt n peppered into their squad. Reality is that which shakes out onto the field each week, good or bad.

We only barely beat the Jags, and got beat by Colts – perhaps the two worst teams in football. So what is OUR reality? Still to play out each Sunday! But I know where my money is placed if I were a betting man. This game is likely to be a caning in the public square!
