What 2 Watch 4 In Tonight’s Preseason Finale

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 30, 2012 – 9:37 am

After an entire offseason of waiting for training camps to begin, and then three weeks of training camp with no games, and then three preseason games, many fans regard the fourth and final preseason game as a mere formality that is more scrimmage than it is game. But for many NFL players, the fourth and final preseason game means the world.

The Vikings fourth and final preseason game of the 2012 season is tonight against the Houston Texans, with kickoff slated for 6:00 p.m. CT. Following the game, the Vikings will have tough decisions to make as they whittle the roster down to 53 players and then scan the waiver wire to see if any players discarded by other teams can make a difference here.

Before that process begins, though, that final preseason game must be played. Below are a few aspects of tonight’s game that I’ll pay quite a bit of attention. Check them out, and then in the comments section below this entry let us know what you think about them and let us know what you’ll be watching for tonight…

Quarterback rotation
At this point it’s hard to know how the Vikings QB situation will shake out. There are four QBs in camp, and only Christian Ponder’s status is secure. Expect Joe Webb to start tonight, and then we’ll see some combination of Sage Rosenfels and McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Each QB brings a different skill set to the table, and each QB would play a distinct role on the team.

Opportunity at WR
Percy Harvin is a game-changer, Michael Jenkins is a reliable veteran, and Jerome Simpson will make an impact for the team once we get past his 3-game suspension. But after those three, there is room for a couple other WRs to make the team and help the passing game. Rookie Jarius Wright is coming along well as the preseason rolls along, and now it appears he’ll have a chance in the punt return role as well (more on that later). Three others – Manny Arceneaux, Devin Aromashodu and Stephen Burton – will get significant looks tonight as they try to make a final positive impression on the coaching and scouting staffs. All three players have the capability to play the X receiver spot while Simpson is away, now the question is which players will display that ability in a game. We’ll find out tonight.

Blanton makes his debut
The Vikings 2012 draft class appears to be promising, but one member of that class has not been on the field yet – S Robert Blanton. That will change tonight, as Blanton figures to see extended playing time. He’ll likely start the game, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him play well into the 2nd half. Furthermore, Blanton could even be joined by fellow Notre Dame product Harrison Smith in the starting lineup, giving us a look at an intriguing starting combination.

The Vikings selected Blanton with 139th overall pick last April and have converted him from a college CB to an NFL safety. Blanton’s transition to the NFL hit a speed bump in training camp, though, when he injured his hamstring.

Filling out the RB stable
There aren’t many – if any – teams in the NFL with a better one-two punch at RB than the Vikings combination of Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart. But you need more than two RBs, and the Vikings have a few options on the roster. Matt Asiata has impressed once again this preseason (he impressed me last preseason, as well), and has shown he’s more than just a plodding, blocking FB. Veteran Lex Hilliard was signed as a free agent this offseason, and he’ll get plenty of looks tonight. Rounding out the competition is Jordan Todman, a young speedster who has battled a leg injury during camp but appears to be getting healthier. They will all get a chance to prove their worth tonight.

What else are looking for tonight? Let us know by leaving your thoughts in the comments section below this entry…

I am also looking forword to seeing Todman play tonite. I think the team could really use a player with his skills. Im not sure if hes 100% off of that ankle injury but he has to go tonite and try to make the team. Good luck Jordan!!

  11. By RichardA1 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Why Webb? he can’t play qb, here’s whats going to happen, they are going to get no where on offense, then he will run and get the 1st down, why they don’t give him a job with the ball I have no idea?

  12. By RichardA1 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

They don’t have s–t for receivers, besides the vets, they do not have much to choose from, I would be waiting for the big cuts after the game and grab a cut player!

  13. By Troutdaddy on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

As much as I think Todman has the abilities,I this Asiata is a much better choice. he is stronger, cuts better and is a more versitile player… Quicker too. I am a little biased though as I am from Utah where he played. I just think he has had a much better showing than Todman or Hilliard and deserves that shot. I am looking to see if Webb can truly shine as our 2nd string. If not, I am all for Sage stepping up. He is solid. MBT is a good prospect for our practice squad. More importantly- I want to see our defense step up and get a few picks!!!

  14. By JE on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I am also excited to see JWebb play tonite. As long as Musgrave doesnt run the ball on both 1st and 2nd down and put him in third and long every time he should be fine. Let Webb throw the football on those early downs!

  15. By RichardA1 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Blanton better find the same suit Cole was wearing the other day and wear it! there is almost no way he can prove himself. Whats wrong with converting a defensive or offensive lineman into a fullback, it has worked in the past.he play where they need one yard for a 1st down, they run a runningback into a pile of players hoping to get a 1st down is the dummest play in the NFL, you might as well give the ball to some one with alot of momentum.

  16. By JE on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Wow Richard. If Webb couldnt play QB he wouldnt be on the team!! You think he won his spot on this roster on the price is right?? Cmon dude! Hes a 6th round pick that makes the league minimum. If he wasnt any good Speilman and the coaching staff would cut him!!!! Get off his back and let this young gifted player play ball.

    Okay all Webb fans…

I can’t watch the game tonight…But there are a few things I would like to see some of the Webb fans comment tonight on after watching the game…

    1. Did Webb stare down his primary receiver as soon as he was given the ball from center ??…

    2. Does Webb step up in the pocket looking for receivers ??…Or just keep dropping back…And just end up running with the ball…

    3. Do you actually see Webb turn his head making reads on his receivers ??…

    4. Can he hand the ball off all night without tripping over the RB on running plays ??…

    5. Is Webb accurate tonight throwing the football ???…

Hoping to hear similar reports about Bethel-Thompson also…

I want to hear who the better QB is fundamentally with accuracy and arm strength…

Not that it was fun watching Joe Webb run around…

Trade Webb for 2013 draft picks!

Blanton has the most promise of the backup WRs mentioned above, including Wright who needs a bit more work to improve his skills as a receiver.

Can we PLEASE get rid of Hilliard already? That was a failed experiment. Let’s cut our losses and move on. Asiata and Todman are your diamonds in the rough.

Does anyone know if Schwarz will get some reps this week? I’d like to see him on the field!

Because when all the other teams in the NFL find out all Webb can retain of the play book is about 10 rehearsed plays in practice all week long…

He won’t have any value left…

Asiata…I like that guys knack of finding and hitting the hole…

  24. By Bluebird7. on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

@OTKalil. OK, let us all hold Ponder and Sage to the same scrutiny as you hold Webb.
Yes, yes, and double yes, I know Ponder is the chosen QB to take us to the promised land!

However, in the mean time, don’t give up on Webb! There is a reason why he is the QB behind the The Great Viking Savior.

  25. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

And Bluebird, we can find example after example of high profile positions in government, corporations, non-profits, athletics, the arts, etc., etc. who could NOT do the job at hand. They got there somehow, agreed. Usually, there was some talent and drive which they rode into that spot– but that wave lifted them higher than they could handle– Webb is not a QB at this level. Period.

I wasn’t all that happy with Ponder holding onto the ball to long last week either…He was to blame for some of his sacks…

    I see his mistakes too…

Ponder needs to learn to throw the ball away at times…And live to see another down…

  29. By Parody on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Trout – Your bias is not changing the resulting opinion. In my view, Asiata has been miles ahead of the other backup RBs this preseason. As far as I can tell, I have no preference for any player for reasons beyond what I’ve seen them do on the field.

I was expecting Hilliard to win it easily when I learned that we signed him and researched his NFL history. So far though, he has been extremely unimpressive and Asiata has been more than reliable.

If Hilliard does win it, I’ll join Blainers in punching a baby, but chances are that it will be of the beanie variety.

Just a note to the Vikings coaches: By the time you get to the NFL if you were not a QB in college you cant just now try to make a player a QB. What I am saying is that we are wasting an incredible talent in Joe Webb! He should have started his NFL career as a WR , not a QB. By the time he is ready to be a starting QB in the NFL his career will be over and/ or his best years behind him. Instead we have to watch Michael Jenkins? YIKES!

    Its preseason…

Webb will need to show his worth during the regular season…

The 4th game in the preseason means little…

Except for the players on the bubble…

I only wish they would blitz the heck out of Webb tonight…But that won’t happen…

But if Houston wants to see how the “flame thrower” handles the blitz ??…That could happen…

Teams always want to see how rookie QB’s handle pressure…

  33. By Bluebird7. on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

@Titus, Webb not a QB at this level? How do you know at this stage of his playing? Don’t you want to wait and see what he can accomplish? Or is your mind that closed you have no regard to see by chance, you and the other anti-Webb people could be wrong?
You are very quick to pick the 4th string QB as the “Wave of the Future”. An unproved QB you haven’t even seen throw a ball in real time, Where did you buy your cystral ball. I I want one!

  34. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Bluebird– Webb has seen a lot of playing time– he played a large part of the game against Chicago at TCF, a whole prime time game in Philly (where our D was fantastic– and one of his few wins), and plenty of action– I have seen a lot of Webb under center– I am not making a quick judgment.

  35. By Bluebird7. on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

OTK, You hope they blitz the heck out of Webb? If I said that about your boy Ponder, you and others would be throwning rocks (Big ones) at me. Give Webb a chance!

  36. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Bluebird, is your last name Webb? Are you related to Joe? We have nothing against Joe as a person or as an athlete. There are 32 teams with 53 players each– and half those teams struggle to find a good quarterback to take them to the promised land– there are about 15 individuals out of those approx. 1500 players who are above avg at QB– few can play the position.

    BB7…

Just think Spielman has a few big decisions coming…And has said many times over and over again…

The Vikings need a youth movement on this team…

Spielman is going to want his young draft picks staying on this 53 man roster…

And Frazier last season has shown the tendencies to prefer veterans on the team over rookies…

Maybe Spielman looks quietly to trade Sage or Webb ??…

How hard will Spielman fight to keep the rookies on this team…

He has final say now being the GM…

@Titus (real or fake I don’t know or care)… You make good points about Webb and I have similar feelings, but I am actually rooting for this kid to come out and prove himself as a genuine backup (Which so far he has not in my opinion) OTKalil I think put is perfectly in his list above of things to look for and they were all spot on. I am hoping that Webb can finally show his worth and I am willing to give him that shot, but if he comes out and plays tentatively or even mediocre, then we got other solutions to focus on. Sage will do the job just fine- very accurate and has the confidence level AND he doesn’t look to run for his life just because he doesn’t see the open receiver… I will give credit to Webb though- even when he take off running he had do some cool stuff on his feet. But that is not the total package so he has got to shake that perception. Last thought- Asiata is the best choice and will be there at the end. Despite a turnover, he has really given the best efforts and showed how to move the ball and find the holes…

“I’ve always felt like, to have a successful team, you gotta have a few bad citizens on the team. I mean, that’s how Ohio State used to win all the time. They would have two or three guys that were criminals. That just adds to the chemistry of the team. You can’t have a football team full of choir boys.”

A Notre Dame Radio Broadcaster said that on Wednesday and as a result was suspended. Its funny, I’ve been saying this for a long time and all I got was hate. Even though I spoke the truth.

    @Bluebird7,

I agree with your view of Joe Webb. He is a virtual rookie, just like Ponder.

We have yet to see what these kids can do with a decent offensive line in front of them, and that is what the Vikings must do to build for the future.

Too many of our Viking fans look at other teams, and feel that their QB is much better than the Vikings. Then they listen to the “it’s all about the Quarterback” garbage on TV/radio/internet AND BELIEVE IT!!!

Concerning Joe Webb, he’s got great feet and a power arm. He needs to settle in the pocket more and learn to read better. With that said I don’t think hea ready for prime time but I think he’s still useful as a wildcat QB / extra player. Give him one more year to see if he can master the art of reading and use him for what he is now

Were raised for a few years by a relative that was not your biological parent. Aunt…..Grandma….. Finally your body blossomed. Better late than never….Somehow you manage to have an ego, fragile as it is. You avoid confrontation and prefer text or email vs an actual phone call. People that work with you really dont like you much. In fact you have few real friends. None that would call you on a Sat night to go get slammed and get some trim. None that are not related to you anyway. So now you post here often. Hitting the refresh button over and over to see if someone has commented on your last witty post. Hmm – Webb seems to have regressed a little from last year, looks. He doesn’t look comfortable trying to be a pocket QB. When you can do things other humans cannot…..you should do those things as much as you can. Please do what you should have done years ago and put Webb at KR/PR. It is a position that we have needed filled for a long time and he has been there the whole time.

  182. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Better than Webb that is for sure. However, Like I wrote earlier I think that the team may just decide that too much time and money has been invested in Webb to just let him go. But you never know. I cant wait to see the new depth chart. That will be an epic blog.

  183. By Viking33 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Easy on MBT, he is a good QB playing against guys you will never see again. I say keep him on the team for sure, but better than Ponder….that jury is still out.

Imagine Bethel playing the past two years– one with Favre as his mentor– starting and playing in prime time games — Chicago at TCF, Phiily in Philly- and a number of other games— do you think he would be outperforming Webb??

  186. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I will lose much faith in the coaching staff if MBT is cut. He is raw for sure but was WAY more composed than Webb. Joe was in panic mode all night. Sure he made a few plays from the pocket but all I can seem to remember is his running ability. That is just fundamentally wrong coming from a QB. Sage slowed thigns down nicely after Webb sat out. But MBT shined. This will be a tough decision for the staff.

  187. By sandiamond on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

One thing I learned during preseason, coming in the 4th Q means you are 4th string
Spence, agreed Felder never got enough target time [reacquire]

  188. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

You can’t say the the hyphen is better than Ponder. That is just ridiculous. CP& may not ever be a top tier QB, but we haven’t EVER seen the hyphen play against a #1 defense. If he can light it up with the big boys blowing through his line and covering his sup-par receivers like a glove, then you can make that statement and be able to back it up, but not now….

  189. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

You can’t truly evaluate the guys that played late tonight when they were pitted against guys that won’t be in the league tomorrow.

@Woodboat—————Well…..we have never seen MBT play behind a first team offensive line either have we?

  191. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

    be fair

  192. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

It isn’t a tough decision for the coaches on the QBs. They’ve hitched their wagon to Ponder, so he’s in. Webb is too good an athlete and they’ve invested too much time (way too much) to let him go, so he’s in. They need Sage as a coach in the film room to help prepare Ponder so he’s in. They won’t keep 4 QBs, so the hyphen is out and most likely a practice squader.

  193. By T19 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Imagine MBT plays with Harvin and Simpson and others. We might do OK with MBT for this year, but next year would be something extraordinary, while Ponder will OK this year and next year. I think MBT will bring a surprise!

  194. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I am being fair. I didn’t say he sucks, just that you can’t say he’s better than Ponder. His WRs are more open, he has more time, if he has to evade the rush, he’s evading scrubs…. shall I go on?

Again, he might be the next Joe Montana, but we don’t know. The coaches see him every day in practice… I’ll let them sort it out. (Of course, that being said, I scratch my head at their decision to keep Webb at QB…)

  195. By T19 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Ok, hope you like me saying, MBT has more potential than Ponder. Is that cool?

  196. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I guess what they say about fans is true. They all think the #3 QB is the answer… until he becomes the #1 QB. OK, you win…. the hyphen is the new Tom Brady. We should cut Ponder, Webb, and Sage… who needs those losers? LoL

  197. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Your just echoing what I wrote pre-game. Bottom line……Your right Webb has too much time and money invested to be cut. The third is between sage and WTB. But anyone can see that Webb does not belong in the pocket. He is a natural runner. Getting him to slow down in the pocket is like expecting your drag car to stay under the speed limit. HE JUST DOES NTO HAVE IT IN HIM TO BE PATIENT. Thats it, Thats all. Did you see how much more composed the whole offense was once they pulled Webb? It was like night and day.

  198. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Sure…. that’s cool. Why does he have more potential? Serious question, because I don’t have the ability to make a proper evaluation by what I’ve seen in preseason. Please explain…

  199. By Viking33 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Well – I hope they figure out what has been obvious for sometime, Webb is not a QB, not matter what the late great Brad Childress said.

Webb has a better skill set than Josh Cribbs – and the last time I checked he was pretty good. Hester is another guy, not good at much more than being a pure athlete. Guys like Webb – Cribbs – Hester have one thing in common, the only thing they do better than anybody else is be unpredictable with the awesome god given ability they have.

  200. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I’m not echoing what you wrote, because I didn’t read it. LOL

  201. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Odark…. the offense settles down when Webb is off the field because they don’t have any idea what he’s going to do or where he’s going while he’s ON the field. Is he going to overthrow someone? Is he going to break the pocket before they even get out of their stances? Is he going to do something amazing or something amazingly awful?

The other players want somebody that’s using the same playbook they’ve been studying.

  202. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Ridiculous argument that you keep what you have invested too much in. Utter nonsense and it has killed many a fortune because people do not know when to let go. At some point, no matter the investment, if you see diminishing returns you need to cut your loss, maintain whatever capital remains, and try another strategy.

  205. By MIke B. on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I watched the game and it was disappointing. The entire preseason has been disappointing. No one says we have to win a single game in Preseason, but to be outplayed in preseason doesn’t bode well for the regular season. It convinces me more that I am right about the 5-11 prediction. Paul Allen says we will be better and I agree by two games.

I think there is enough question marks about Webb at this point that he may lose his #2 position and is possible in cost savings point that you cut Webb and bring in MBT as the #3 QB. I think this is the possible suprise to look for tomorrow.

Oh, I’m not arguing in favor of even keeping Webb on the roster, Titus. If Tavaris Jackson can find a home, they ought to be able to trade Webb for something. If not, I wouldn’t mind seeing them cut him. He wouldn’t be the wideout or RB that folks think he would be. Surprising a defense by running it as a Q!B is one thing, but when you line up in the I formation and the QB hands you the ball, there is a whole different look at the line of scrimmage.

I’m just stating what I think the organization feels about Webb. Frazier is letting his familiarity and friendship get in the way of logic, just like he did with McNabb.

Could trade him to the Jets, Webb = Tebow – they apparently are reinventing the wheel thereby trying to bludgeon the opponent into submission with an crazy inept offense.

Looking from a strictly dollars and cents you have 4 QBs. POnder is #1 Webb is #2 Sage #3 and MBT #4. I am sure Sage’s salary is pretty high even at Vet Minimums. Webb is in the highest year of his rookie contract. Looks to me cutting/trading Webb or Sage would be a financial move also.

  226. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Yeah, Titus, it reminds me of high school athletics. The kids that the coaches like or think have a higher potential get more latitude to make mistakes and stay on the field. An average player gets yanked after their first error. On our Vikes squad, the likes of McNabb, Asher Allen, and Webb have to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that they don’t belong before they get the axe, taking the roster spot of someone that could have legitimately contributed.

As an aside…. are we really debating Todman vs Asiata for the 3rd RB slot? How many times is he going to touch the ball this year, twice? It really doesn’t matter, because if we have to rely on either of these two, that means AP and Gerhart are hurt and we are toast anyway.

  227. By Viking33 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

You can say the T word once and even twice – just not three times – then he goes all Beeltejuice on you

  228. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Yeah, Mike B, Seattle got over big time. Traded a scrub and got value. As I understand it, the team that traded for him cut their #3 QB to get him on the roster.

  229. By sandiamond on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Let’s not forget Brenard BB. Hopefully Woodboat those type of player dedications will be put to rest soon

T19… it isn’t a matter of being a Ponder fan or an MBT fan. I’m serious, I’d like to know why you like him so much so I can get behind the kid, too.

I’m a Vikes fan… I really don’t care (too much) who’s on the field crushing the opposition. (I don’t wanna see any drama queens like T.O. or Chad, but other than that…)

  231. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Man I wrote this sweet entry just now but it included too many swear words in relation to Ponders ego and got banned……..Ponders smiling face brings out the…..ahem……best in me. His ego does not match his skill level. Not a Ponder fan

  232. By Viking33 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Tjack – are we comparing Tjack to Webb…..well ya I guess that is not such a stretch. But, what team other than the Redskins would do that?? Is there two teams that would trade a draft pick of some value for a QB with no value out there??

  233. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Yeah, forgot about BB. I think giving Spielman the reins on the roster will help, but Les is still gonna lobby for his guys….

  234. By sandiamond on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Mike B my guess for Sage is 800-900k. wonder if we get a salary break for players on the PS?

  235. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I don’t know… maybe we could trade him to Seattle? :)

  236. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Anyway, it matters not what we think of Ponder vs MBT. Ponder is our starter this season until the Saints bounty handily removes his jaw. Until then…….GO VIKES SKOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  238. By Troutdaddy on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Ok Titus- you were all gushy on Ponder early on and now you are saying MBT is the answer??? What’s up? Sorry all you MBT and Webb fans but Ponder is the answer and you all should get on board with that and quit all the second guessing. It’s pre-season people and these second, third and 4th string guys are going to have break-out moments, but for Pete’s sake, quit glorifying them to sound like the “New Tom Brady” until they get their chance. Yeah, MBT looked good but to just assume that he is the one to make it happen in the regular season when ALL THE STARTERS (first team) are actually getting a shot to make plays is not realistic. I for one can’t wait to see Ponder with all of his weapons and our defense slaying QB’s and receivers… Man I am glad pre-season is over. Watching these games has been fun, yet frustrating- especially with all of the officiating…

  239. By MIke B. on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I have to agree with you all about the organization holding on to players they feel have “potential” for too long of time. Asher Allen never developed. McNabb was a good idea, but he was kept as started at least 2 games longer than he should have. Childress’s obsession with TJack caused us not to go any further in the playoffs when Ferotte could have gotten us deeper that year. The Organization has a history of loyalty issue with certain players they feel will work out.

Why not give the third spot with some 2nd spot time to the HYpen?
Monsta arm could lead a 4th trash game comeback victory this year

Just watched Fraiser’s presser, two things stuck out.
    1. pretty dynamic dude, I hope he shows more passion as a coach. He’s not coaching Pop Warner.
    B. they need to hire me to travel with the team and iron the drop back, it does not travel well. Pretty wrinkle-ly

  243. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I will admit, odark, that I do like Ponder in the press conference. I like his demeanor, I like that he holds himself accountable, I like his laid back style. I like that he went out of his way to make friends with as many Vikes as possible to try to bring the team together and become the leader.

All this is moot if he doesn’t improve as a QB, of course. But I do like him as a guy. Reminds me of Aaron Rodgers, who is another guy that I’d like to have a beer with (at the Graduate in Chico, CA. That bar is like a freakin Rodgers shrine… :) )

I have not changed my mind on Ponder whatsoever. Give BMT some time to develop– but let him develop! Please keep him– one day he will surpass all the modern greats. He is our future.

  250. By sandiamond on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Yea they are paying Sage a fair chunk. Makes the team he is in as QB insurance policy

  251. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

And agreed, Trout. It doesn’t really matter who our 3rd QB is… our PS guy will still get plenty of coaching. If we get to the point that we need our 3rd QB… game over.

  252. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

@Woodboat…….Ponder was Miced tonight….Did you hear him when he was speaking with MBT? He said, “Great job…..you been watching me huh?”
McCleod laughed but you know he wanted to elbow-smash Ponder right on the uni-brow.

  253. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Seriously, Odark? I didn’t hear that, but I did notice Ponder seemed overly c.ocky on the sidelines.

  254. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Yeah… hey, maybe he was joking? I mean, is it possible? I don’t think I’ve heard a presser that I haven’t heard him joking, but I’m sure he doesn’t do that on the field, right? LOL Come on, give the kid a break (and he is a kid… most of them are…) If you don’t think he’s gonna develop, that’s fine, you may be right. But let’s not get crazy….

  255. By odark30 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Well….I guess the only skill I care too much about this season from our QB is his/her ability to hand-off the ball to AP or Toby in a timely and efficient manner. Beyond that……Throw the ball away when your about to get sacked for a loss.. Do that and I will be a happy fan.

Its all good. I think we have some problems to deal with but really we are a pretty darned good team for a rebuilding year. I think we will surprise many this season. I will say 10+ wins this year.

  262. By Woodboat on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I’d just like to see our QB just be adequate. I’d love for him to be on par with Brees/Brady/Rodgers, but I’ll settle for not making mental errors, being able to hit his receivers at a reasonable rate, and getting out of AP/Gerharts way.

  263. By sandiamond on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Lofty goals I know…..But I always like to be the guy that yells I TOLD YA SO!!!!! When everything goes right. Anyway SKOL BROTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to work tomorrow. Talk to you all for the first regular season game…GO VIKES!!!!!!!!!!!

  267. By Frederick Jones on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

Joe Webb did complete a fairly high percentage of throws this week, but didn’t get it done when it counted most.

Bethel-Thompson looked better than Joe Webb in this one, but was allowed to whip the ball all over the field. If they had let Joe do that he would have racked up more yards.

    Ponder will be #1
    Webb will be #2
    Rosenfels #3
    Bethel-Thompson Taxi Squad…Jones hopes.

The Vikings can still finish 8-8, if they get lucky avoiding injuries.

  268. By animal26 on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I gotta say, Sage should be our number 2 QB. I was a huge Webb fan last year, but it looks like he’s taken a step backwards from a promising 2011 season he had.

  270. By Jon on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I hope you guys do trade/ cut Webb. Maybe then I can see him play for some fans that don’t hate him and bash him. I’ll really enough watching him start for another team, at quarterback, and throw for 200 yards, run for another 150, and catch a pass for a touchdown, and make you look silly. Just like old times.

    Go Blazers.
