Brinkley Shows More Improvement As Regular Season Approaches
Posted by on August 26, 2012 – 10:56 amWe mentioned late last week that Vikings coaches were pleased with the progress starting middle LB Jasper Brinkley has made in training camp and the preseason. We may be talking more about that progress this week, as Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier once again praised Brinkley after Friday’s exhibition game against the San Diego Chargers.
“Jasper seemed like he played a lot better,” Frazier said. “He was more aggressive, he seemed like he was out there having fun, kind of letting go a little bit. His play was encouraging just watching from the sideline. He made a lot of plays tonight so that should help his confidence. It was inspiring to see him play as aggressive as he did.”
Brinkley had 2.0 sacks and 3 QB hurries on the night, as he was a part of suffocating performance by the Vikings first-team defense. Granted, San Diego was missing several starters, but the Vikings defense did what they should’ve done given their matchup. The Chargers had just 80 net yards of offense and 5 first downs in the 1st half versus the Vikings starters, and the visitors were just 22% on 3rd downs and averaged only 2.5 yards per carry.
That’s the kind of performance coaches and fans want to see from Brinkley. His injury history has been well-publicized, but after great improvement since training camp began in late July and a couple of encouraging preseason outings, it will be Brinkley’s solid play that gets the publicity soon.

The first team defense is starting to really look promising for this season. Just a little worried about the backups. The last score by the Chargers really reminded me of how the Vikes lost a lot of games last year.

I have to agree that Brinkley has show improvement since the first preseason game. The defense shutdown the Chargers. The defense has been playing much better. Let’s see what happens in the first 3 games of the regular season that should tell us fans how the year will be.

The starters were going up against scrubs…in a pre-season game…of course they were bound to lack enthusiasm.
Its common sense. And like Mike W. alluded to, you cant win when you turn the ball over 4 times.

Its a shame that Kamar Jordan suffered a hand injury, heard lots of positives about him making plays in training camp. If he would have gotten in some pre-season games im sure he would still be on this team. He could have been our version of Victor Cruz.

Wobs is spot on. Your never goin to win with 4 turnovers! That being said, we only gave up 12 points. Nice job by the defense!! Jasper Brinkley has really played well.Middle LB is one of the toughest positions in all of football and i think hes done a fine job filling some big shoes in EJ Henderson.
By JE on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply
I thought Kevin and Fred did a nice job at the tackle positions.Overall i would give our defense an A. We have given up the least amount of points in our division thus far. I no its only preseason but its sure nice to see us improving on the defensive side of the ball.Way to go Defense!!!

I think Burton has something but it might be another year until we see it. He was such a raw player. Same deal with Manny.
Jenkins is solid and plays the flanker spot fine. We could for sure use an upgrade but he isn’t terrible like most say.
Time to watch some Peyton Manning, ahhh….so thats what a real quarterback looks like.

I would not doubt the Vikings grab at least one tall receiver from the waiver wire this Saturday place on the practice squad…After the 53 man roster is in place…
Very much hoping Frazier is totally on board with Spielmans youth movement…That would mean many of the rookies would find positions on the 53 man roster…
And more rookies could then be claimed off the waiver wire to fill the practice squad also…

Great job with the coaching staff to find legit competition to get this team better. I keep on seeing comments about the lack of energy for this pre-season game. Really didnt see much of a difference, other than we had no touchdowns to cheer for in the first half… The announcer stats his own perception, then this leads the fans to feel the same. LOL Tebow seriously I don’t what goes on in others minds. I would rather bring back Randy Moss and his baggage than the media circus and lack of production Tebow would bring. Denver knew what to do with Tebow and that was to dump him the first chance they got. Elway knew what type of player Tebow was and promptly dumped him.
By MIke B. on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply
Again I disagree with Wobby the WR core we have doesn’t cause other teams any concern we can get down the field deep and score quickly. This makes our offense predictable and they put more players in the box to stop the run. This is the Offensive coordinator’s challenge to open up the field when other teams do this. They couldn’t do it last year and haven’t done it yet this year. It puts too much pressure on the OLine and with a new Oline that’s a bad situation. We need to get a top notch Outside WR and open up the Offense and not the Run First that Frazier likes.
By sandiamond on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply
couldn’t disagree more with the WR mmm question. This player doesn’t have to be a old veteran Mike W just a tall, outside threat is all the fans want to see!
Probably not fair to lump P. Burress in with the other two knucklheads as he was a top end-zone threat in this league last year
Everytime the fans _know this team needs a new skill position player, Wobs fights back with excuses

By Mike B. on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply
@Sandiamond. I expect Wobby to support the team and players that are currently on the team as he is paid by the team. I think this issue needs to be brought up by the fans that have watched the games on a continuing basis. This issue rests squarely on the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator. The Offense needs to have a depth threat ability or the offense becomes too predictable and easily defended. Our OLine can’t stand up to 8 or 9 defenders in the box. This is going to again cause injuries to our QB and Running Backs in the long run. In today”s NFL you need to be able to make the quick strike if defenses are bunching up on you. The Pass enables the run and the run the pass. We must be great at both or it’s going to be a long season.
By JE on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply
Ihave to agree with you Mike B. My question to you and other blogers is can Jerome Simpson be that guy? We didnt play him friday nite and it showed. He does have big play ability and has the speed to take the top off of the defense. Those are two things we havent seen since Moss was here.
By sandiamond on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply
S Mryon Rolle released plus the guy from the other night WR R. Parrish. My guess is Studwell & Co flips the page on players over 28 1/2
@ESPNJudd
Also, it’s safe to say the Vikings have NO vertical threat on their roster for first 3 weeks with Simpson suspended. None.
By Mike B. on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply
It is my understanding that Jerome Simpson is about the same height as Harvin, so yes they both have big play ability. They don’t have the ability to stretch the field as a Randy Moss or Plaxico can. Some would argue that here are shorter big play receivers, but these taller faster WR seems to have consistant producton and cause defenses to back off and account for them.
By Matthias on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply

@JE,
There is predjudice against Joe Webb. Maybe it’s because he played at UAB, and they don’t like players from there. The jones-boy don’t know!

@ Jones
No one is prejudice against Joe Webb. Let it go already. Most people love Joe Webb just not as a QB. It has nothing to do with school or color and everything to do with inconsistet performance. I dislike to have any bad player starting no matter where they came from or what color they are.

Cash your reality checks and keep plenty of cold ones around – we’re gonna need them to get thru this season. This ship still has way too many leaks and our schedule is not filled with rainbows, unicorns and lemondrops. And Spielman, don’t think we fans haven’t forgotten about you – you haven’t exactly filled the pipeline with talent these past years, have you? And Frazier, you and your crack staff need to turn the intensity up to 11. This team is not feared by anyone.
