    @packerhater and Parkway,

Kalil had an excellent day EXCEPT two throwing plays.

Like HALL OF FAMER RON YARY he will not play perfect every day.

By the way, Yary was picked #1 in the entire draft, out of USC, and I never heard anyone say he wasn’t worth it.

The pre-season is all about roster moves. We shouldn’t worry about wins and losses too much. Things play out differently when you put your best 40 players on the field!!!

    8-8 is jone’s rate!

  3. By Frederick Jones on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Actually the Vikings need to change their draft mentality, and begin drafting O Linemen higher in the draft, not less!!!

If we had drafted a few 2nd and 3rd rounders in the last 4 or 5 years we would not be in the position we are in with the Offensive Line.

I agree Frederick, too much is being put on the W/L column right now. Kalil did fine. and i can see a respectable 6-10 this season, not a bad 6-10 like a couple years ago….this one will show some promise, rather than regression.

I agree, We need to keep drafting good oline men in the upper rounds. Games r won and lost on the line of scrimage. You cannot win in this league if you dont have a very good Oline!

Pretty angry at the lack of enthusiasm on offense. It seems when Ponder takes two steps forward he takes three back the following week. If you go back and watch him he was NOT GOOD! He was standing like a Pillar of salt after dropping back in the pocket. It looked like his computer locked up! It was very odd… He was throwing LATE. He was throwing behind. He was starring down receivers. And the worst is that he did not look like he had any emotion or energy as if he forgot it was his dress rehearsal for the regular season.

As for the defense, they played very well but the injury’s are now a HUGE concern for this team again! If Chris Carr is forced to start we are in BIG TROUBLE. He is not good! Why do you think he was cut? You dont cut good Cornerback;s in the NFL, they are cut because they cant cover… This coaching staff will not be around because it is one of the worst in the NFL. If the Wilf’s dont see this in the next year and do something be ready for a decade of no playoffs!

I give Ponder a d . Very dissappointed. All I could think about was Aaron Rodgers watching and saying to himself, “well Minnesota is no threat.” if they play the way they played last night. 0-16. Ponder sits, Frasier and that OC joker is out of here. Btw- Fraiser looked as white as ghost at his presser.

  12. By JE on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Ponder has alot of potential to be a good QB but only has a dozen starts under his belt. I agree he didnt play well but i thought it was the offense as a whole and not just Ponder. We need to step it up or its goin to be a long season!

Like every other team in the NFL no team is perfect. I don’t think our problem is the players, as you can see some made some huge plays. I think the issue is the coaching staff, if we could pick up a coach to put all the talent together the Vikings would be a pretty good team.

No. instead of wasting good picks on O-lineman, there is also a thing called free agency where you can aquire proven vets. Something this staff dont seem to know exists…………….go ahead and let me have it now Fred.

AJ, did you mean that Chris Carr was cut from another team and we picked him up, however, as of today he made the initial 15 man cut, what a shame. I agree with you he is not very good and I hope they see that with the 53 man final roster and cut him!

  17. By Justin F on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Thankfully Audie Cole wasn’t one of the 15. I hope he makes it. The kid could become a breakout star this year. Another guy I hope stays, that Matt A. kid (running back) has alot of potential. He just needs to hang on the ball harder.

I think way too much emphasis is put on the passing game. I know that’s the way most teams are going, but it doesn’t have to be that way. We still have the best running back in the league. Look at the ravens very good with a sub par passing game. Peterson is the workhorse and he will be again. Ponder is second fiddle on this team all he has to be is good. A few touchdowns maybe 300 yards and we’ll be ok in the passing game. But if Peterson gets less than 20 touches per game we are in trouble.

  20. By Secret on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

I agree the Vikings and Ravens are a lot alike the difference is they have a good coach………

  21. By Snookj on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Well.. Looks like the first round of cuts are in.. I agree, Carr should be very happy he’s not on this list as his performance thus far would suggest.. Our secondary is feeling the injury bug already.. Can’t wait to see B. Felder finally get significant time this week.. I think he’ll show well..

  22. By JE on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Unfotunately the running game does take a backseat to the passing game. Just look at Murice Jones Drew. He led league in rushing and they won five games. Chris Johnson ran for two k couple years ago and didnt make the playoffs. That being said i still feel lucky to have two really good backs in AP and Toby.If Ponder can get the passing game going we can have a shot at making the playoffs.Thats right i said it.

BOLD comment JE, I’ll hold you to that one

  24. By JG on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

The Ravens are not at all like the Vikings on offense or defense. Baltimore throws the ball way more and Ray Rice is a back thats gona have 70-80 receptions a year. Minnesota is nothing like that they have two bruising backs and no wideouts execpt Percy in the slot. All Ponder has to do to be good is 300 yards and a few touchdowns? Some of you guys are idiots. Its not Madden it’s real life

  25. By Secret on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

@ JG I was only saying that the Ravens and Vikings are a lot alike in the way that the defense takes control more than the offense, although the Ravens are turning that around this year. Anyway my point was that the defense can take control and turn things around for the Vikings being that the O isn’t quit ready this year to take full control of the game.

  26. By vikelifer on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

better not even think of cutting Audie Cole or Allen Riesner they both should be starting, or next man in at least.Harrison Smith cost us that ball game he should have been looking for an int. instead of layin a hit on a defenseless guy.

  27. By JE on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

What our offense needs is a legit no.1 wide reciever. I am still not sure if JSimpson is that guy but he looks alot better than what we have had in recent memory. Percy is the best slot in the NFL. Rudolph is the real deal. We have a good running game. The question mark is Ponder. If he plays well i say yes we can make the playoffs secret!!

  28. By Secret on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

I never said they couldn’t make the playoffs……I have a lot of faith in Ponder that a lot of people don’t. Me on the other hand see a Rookie QB that has a lot of potential. My biggest question is….the NFC North is gonna be tough this year, are they ready yet? What do all you think?

I hate Green Bay but the only way the Vikes have a shot is if Rodgers gets hurt and the Madden curse bites Calvin. One way or another there’s gonna be 2 playoff teams from the North 3 could happen but thats not somthing you bet on.

  32. By PD on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

I blame that bad play mostly on the coaches with competition so close instead of team effort it was individual rookies trying to showcase talent and not playing together and the coaches should orchestrate that performance on the field!

Next big question………. are players at fault or coaches at fault?? Should players be cut or coaches be cut?

  34. By packhater on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

The run first offense doesn’t work in the current NFL. Other teams don’t respect our ability to get down field quickly. They are looking for the run the short pass and keep 8 men in the box. I saw it the entire second half. You need to have players that will open up the field and keep those LB back away from the Oline. We need to be able to show other teams if you are going to play the run, we are going to pass down field deep. We are too predictable right now. Loved Sage’s series, he was poised and incontrol of the offense. The fumbles are rookie mistakes and that kind of thing will happen.

  44. By Richard1A on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

I’m sold, lets get DT Hargrove. For what reason would they cut Elimimien, he at worst could make special teams? had to be something behind the scene. What players have other teams cut that are good? this team needs something, like a a– kicking!

  51. By jdogg on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Titus…do you think these fans understand what preseason means. If you have one bad game it doesn’t necessarily mean your team is done. We struggled yesterday and people are starting to write this team off. Ridiculous. They want the team to get excited about the this game….yet they forget it means nothing. I remember 90 players rushing to the endzone when Cole scored a touchdown….they are excited. Ponder and the offense will be fine and will put points on the board. The sack king will again have a great year, and Kevin W. again will dominate on the inside. Score of Jags game….. 34-10. Vikings. And you will see a pumped up team…..they will bring it.

  52. By MIke B. on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

@Titus It may be preseason, but my observation is a continuing one from last year. The offense is predictable and Frazier’s run first offense is the cause of it. You can hollar all you want about it being preseason, but poor play is poor play and it is a continuation from last year.

  54. By Frederick Jones on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Ponder did at times have more time to throw, however he does not have Rodgers, or Brady time to throw.

There is a BIG difference between BRADY time and PONDER time believe j o n e s!

Brady can look left, look right, pick his nose, fake the pump, and then whip it!

Ponder it’s more like…take three steps back…look straight ahead…you better whip it because here they come!!!

  55. By Frederick Jones on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

    @Mike B.,

Maybe we could be like the Raiders of Daryl Lamonica and John Madden. They whipped the ball long almost every series.

Tarkenton used to enjoy throwing the ball long on first down. He felt it didn’t hurt you as much that way.

I asked this question last year, and nobody tried to answer:

Why couldn’t the Vikings flare both backs out like they used to do with Ricky Young and Chuck Foreman? (Let’s a s s u m e they could find those kind of backs)

  59. By Frederick Jones on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

I think if you flared the backs, you could d ink and d unk them better, and it might also open up the run.

The outside linebackers would have to get out to the “edge” more often.

  60. By Frederick Jones on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

It was good for Ponder to have the type of game he had. He can grow from that.

As far as the #2 we are in good shape with Joe Webb. Joe whipped the ball well in the San Diego game. He did have more protection, but as freddie has told you, that is what it is all about. Webb could be one of the all-time great QBs in NFL history!

There have been teams who have made it to the Super Bowl with “average” type QBs.
Trent “pilifer” Dilfer actually won a title for the Baltimore Ravens, and Rex Grossman led the Bears to the SB against the Indy Colts and almost won it.

Sage Rosenfels may be more like Dilfer and Grossman, but he can get it done…
if the O Line gives him time.

  61. By Frederick Jones on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Jones thinks that we are strong at QB, but that we have not proven that the DBack and OLine problems have been solved.

    Our Linebackers are average.
    DLine slightly above average.
    RBs average unless A.D. plays.
    WR average.
    TEs above average
    Special Teams average

Jones means “average” for the NFL.

Looks like they are serious about keeping all the TE’s. It woiuld be very cool to have a bunch formation, goal line, as a serious play action passing formation with the TE’s andf Toby suddenly in short patterns everywhere.. The quick flat, dump pass has gotten us some easy scores already.

offensively,i don’t see the problem with’s going to be the O-line.when Ponder had time,he hit his receivers.when he didn’t have time he sucked.also most WRs look good when the QB has time to get them the ball.

    Titus –

While I agree that you can’t take too much stock in any of the preseason games, I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the effort level of the first team play, both on offense and defense. The offense sputtered for the first time this season, punting on at least the first 2 series and the first team defense, playing against essentially SD’s backups, had a chance to come out and take over the game. It seemed to me that instead of taking charge of the level of play, they played down to the level of the competition. That is a little disconcerting as if it continues into the regular season even the games they should win (weeks one and two in particular) could become nail biters.

I can only hope that the coaching staff does what is necessary to motivate the team to play to their level at all times during the regular season, or we could be in for a long one again.

Back on topic – I was more than a little surprised to see Soloman on the cut list this early. I realize he was buried on the depth chart, but I also think that he could have made an impact on special teams. Here’s for hoping he gets put on the practice squad – one year there might be all he needs.

  68. By Vikings1 on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Frederick Jones, I hear what you are saying about the backs but in my opinion, Musgrave is much too conservative and predictable on offense. Sems to me that the OL coach and the DB coach are not very good coaches because we have had DB and OL problems for years.

Ponder made one bad decision (int) and one excellent one (seeing Harvin early and putting theball where only he could get it). His main problem seemed to be not stepping up in the pocket which was non existent last year. Not that W-L matters in preseason, but we lost on a rookie mistake that is easy to correct and is made at least once it seems every week during the season by veterans (with the ever changing rules for safety sake). This team is finding an identity rigt before our eyes like we haven’t seen around here in awhile. just can’t quite figure out what it is yet. Sadly, with the free agents we picked up, we won’t get to see the total transformation until at least week 5. Did E. henderson or jasper Brinkley drop into coverage well at all last night?

  71. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

I went cycling last night– missed the whole first half. I did watch the first two games in their entirety– something I never do in preseason. So, yesterday, with summer fading in the north country, I decided to go back to my old ways. Preseason is meaningless!!! My hometown Bills lost all the time in preseason the four years they went to the Superbowl— preseason does not tell you anything except who will be cut. You think the starters will play hard to get injured? Come on! Everything will be A okay– Vikings 10-6.

  72. By noheadcheeseallowed on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Also not to be too optimistic, but I think this team barring major injuries could win ten games, and should win at least eight. I would not have said that a month ago.

QB play from Ponder is pretty good but last game he made rookie mistakes. He will be fine. The o-line is better but Ponder needs more time. I say RG is the weakest the o-line so we need to fix that in FA or draft. As far as WRs I would like a true number 1. I want it where Harvin is 2 Simpson is 3 and we get another Moss/Rice kind of a guy in the draft to fill that number 1WR spot. Defense we need a nose tackle,MLB, and a safety opposite of Smith. Guion/Brinkley/Raymond-Sanford is not the answer. All four of them are insurance players.

    Right on sandiamond !!!…

Here is my scoop…You better believe what happened last preseason won the GM position for Spielman…

It was Frazier who fought hard to bring in “veteran” McNabb, and also keep “veteran” Berrian around…

Spielman has been preaching youth for years…Zygi I believe has finally heard him…

Will Frazier Keep the “veteran” players Carr and Bowman..Who are average at best…And release players with much more upside (imo) like Felder,Jones and Sherels ???…

Webb is another question mark on the team…Will Frazier fight for Ponder,Webb and Sage to be his QB’s…With Webb most likely having already hit his ceiling on development…

What if Bethel-Thompson is claimed by another team…And becomes a star QB ???…McLeod has a cannon for an arm…And is a true candidate as a developmental QB…As a 3rd QB on a team…

The point being…This is a true rebuilding team…Rookies with plenty of upside should not lose jobs too average “veteran” players who have hit their ceiling of development…

I think what Frazier decides on who he decides to keep on the 53 man roster…Will be as an important to Spielman…As the wins & losses at the end of this season…

And the Vikings are also high up on the pole for claiming players off the waiver wire…

My vote is for all rookies with upside…

Joe Webb is only 25 years old!! Hit his ceiling?? He has only started 2 games at QB. Aaron Rodgers didnt even start playing until he was 26. Cmon dude! Yes Thompson has a stong arm but so did Jeff George. Sage or Thompson is the question. JWebb is a lock!!!

we should use Manny Arceneau a little more, he is a very good reciever when used

  90. By feugo on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

with Cris Cook,Josh Robinson,Harrison Smith, Robert Blanton, Antoine,Bowman,Sanford,Raymond our defensive backfield will become 100 % better than last year

  91. By feugo on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

as we all know injuries and a few lucky breaks here and there and we could finish as high as 11 and 5, if our special team can get fired up and smash a few for a few turnovers..who knows, maybe AP will be totally amazing, maybe our defensive back field will get a few INT,our defense will get plenty sacks and will blitz more, and as we all know football games are won mostly on 4 to 5 plays in the game……..we just have to learn to not beat ourselves

  92. By feugo on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

we can’t be worst than last year with Mcnabb!!!!!!!!!!!!

  93. By Hawk1 on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

When are the Vikings going to realize they have to pick up a proven veteran receiver .They did not adress one of the most glaring problems with our offense! Why dont they pick up plaxico burress for one season and give ponder someone who can actually catch a ball. They need to give him some help!!

  94. By MIke B. on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

@Hawk1 I think that Frazier is too proud to realize his plan for the offense doesn’t work and is predictable. I don’t think the Vikings will get a top notch WR this year as they are committed to their “Run First” offense.

  95. By astolpho on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

I looked at the schedule and thought about it in terms of last years team, and I would have given them a chance of winning 6 games, so I got this sort of fuzzy feeling that every win past number 6 is a measure of improvement over last year.

Cutting Elimimian is again evidence of an NFL bias against smaller guys. Surely would have been a great special teams guy. Also Arceneaux should get more reps at reciever.

I bet green Bay is licking their chops hoping that Thpmpson gets cut.

  98. By QB on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

I know they are not gonna show much in the preseason, but I really think they need to roll Ponder out of the pocket a lot more. Also, why in the world we don’t run more screens is amazing to me.

  99. By peever on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

ponder had no time with fat matt the sieve…cant be a pocket passer with no pocket…mix in a salad kalil…another wasted draft pick……1-1/2 to 2 years for anything out of kalil…should have taken blackmon…the next “megatron” let ponder buy time with his feet…..and find “good” recievers,,,,,owasu showed some promise…..eliminiam was as good as any of the other middle of the road lbs on the squad

cmon man you people are so not with it this team is headed in the right direction and we go at least 8-8 so go and suck ur thumb or somethin elsce

  101. By JE on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

Matt Kalil was a great pick!!! Not only did Blackmon hold out, he olso got thrown in jail for a DWI. Kalil will hold down the backside of the Oline for the next decade.

  102. By Richard1A on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

Elimimien on the practice squad, would make me a happy vikes fan! why, because linebackers are always getting hurt, then Elimimien might get into the game, then we can see what he can do! You don’t get the best hitter award for nothing!

  103. By sandiamond on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

Elimimien has 10 days to sign with another club or the vikings. If not his rights go back to the CFL in Canada

  104. By Immure on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

Peever- Had the vikings not drafted Kalil who would you suggest that they play at LT instead?

I would like to know why “the powers to be” think Musgrave is a so called
“offensive genius”???? Give me a break! Where is the immagination in the play calling. And I’m not just talking about this pre-season. Same old thing, different year. Drop back, get sacked, run the the ball up the middle. This team is so predictable it’s pathetic.

  106. By Hawk1 on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

Mike B I agree with you on their run first offense, but I really don’t think after the loss of Greg Childs who I think was going to be pretty good, that the Vikings don’t have much choice but to go out and pick up a veteran WR.I think that if we could give ponder a #1reciever he would have much better chance to do well.Rudolph,Harvin and maybe Simpson when he gets back are o.k.I’m sorry but Jenkins sucks and Wright is a slot receiver.John Carlson can’t even get on the field no matter who he plays for and we of course over paid for him. What is the down side to signing a plaxico burress for 1 year,at least he can catch a football and is a tall target for ponder to hit.

  107. By stig meyer on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

The coach need to get the players fired up!!!!!!!!!!!!he has to be in the players face…encourage them when doing good..kick their ass when not giving 100%….

  108. By jv3rnon on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

We need to get Ponder that #1 guy and a RG. Defense needs NT,MLB,FS. Past few years its been a struggle watching them. Vikings give a guy 25mil to have VIP seats on the field to watch the game. We should have saved that money for Harvin and another superstar because Carlson wont worth it. Ponder is only gonna be as good as weapons he has.

What was wrong with Harrison’s hit toward the end of the game? Why penalize good football?

  110. By Meekay on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

I say keep all the TEs. At least they catch the ball.

  111. By Meekay on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

peever the right side broke far more often then the left side. Matt plays LT, FYI.

  112. By brian mcwhirter on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply

geez, i figured the vikes would cut elimimian …don’t know why..probably because he played in the CFL and they don’t appreciate that level of play and the fact this guy was a one man wrecking crew. hopefully when they are 1-7, they will activate him off the practice roster(assuming they are bright enough to sign him to pr)and he will be for the vikes what cameron wake ended up being for miami…if a player is a superstar in the CFL, then he will likely be a valuable player in the NFL as well…

  113. By sandiamond on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply

If i’m reading correctly, Elim is gone this year can not return to the Vikings PS. 8 days left for him to sign with any other nfl club

Why didn’t they give him this week to show his stuff instead of penalizing him anf losing his rights for an early on injury?

  114. By vman on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply

should of drafted WI QB, wilson, we could of got him in the 3rd…..i just got a bad vibe about the position for this year. If Ponder goes down……..we’re F’d . sorry just had to vent. Watching him play for the seahawks is painful…knowing he could of been throwing to guys in purple instead. i know we had greater needs but still….watching ponder’s backups……..Painful.

  115. By uprooted on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply

it starts with coaching… When the dentist was canned, I was thinking (give Leslie 2 years) If we don’t see a major improvement then cut ties and find someone with Pedigree. If we don’t go 50/50 or better, cut Leslie and entire staff, Get Gruden or similar. Trade AP and Jared Allen for future picks and lets get it right.

  116. By vman on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply

@ uprooted, i totally agree with the coaching angle. I don’t agree with trading AP or Allen, mostly because i think its too late to do so.(Age) But definately, get a good coach. Gruden would be a start ! and besides …..he was smart enough to realize that Russell Wilson, was a smart mature and athletically gifted QB……that we could of got without a 2nd round desperation pick or trade up to get. I hope i’m wrong…….but its frustrating to look back at some of the coaches that slipped away from the team and then win super bowls in other cities when we get Mr Childless……and Mr. Non-emotional….

  117. By uprooted on Aug 27, 2012 | Reply

    Yeah vman,

I hear you… I was just thinking about them… AP and Jared Allen have been great soldiers for the purple… trading them to teams that have a chance at getting them a ring.

@ Fred Jones – Ponder it’s more like…take three steps back…look straight ahead…you better whip it because here they come!!!

At least that is better than last year…1 stop drop, oh sheet my O-line are all matadors in their spare time! Ahhhh!

  119. By Bigfan1 on Aug 28, 2012 | Reply

Why is Ponder such a work in progress and other college draftees like Russell Wilson hands down won starter in his rookie year and is lighting up the preseason for Seattle, or Cam Newton, Brandon Weeden, etc, etc. Vikings could have taken Wilson who ended up getting drafted in the later rounds I believe. It’s makes me think that the Vikings wanted a player like Ponder who they could mold to their liking rather than an instant starter. Supposedly, Ponder is a real intelligent guy academically, but seems to have a lot of rust in his football skills.

  120. By dieseldog on Aug 28, 2012 | Reply

I agree with Bigfan1 – Ponder will never be a bonafide starter, he’s another Tavaris Jackson type experiment….now we have to waste another year or two waiting for a wanna-be to develop before realizing drafting him was a mistake.

  123. By IRAMOE on Aug 30, 2012 | Reply

I agree we need to build a O-line before anything else. Ponder won’ t panic when he is comfortable standing in and waiting for someone to get open. You can’t pass judgement on Ponder until he has a line. Unfortunatly for us we are about three years away from that. Then by that time we can start replacing the people that got old waiting for the O-line to get ready.
This when you rely on your assistant coaches people.
