Defense Clamps Down On Chargers In 1st Half

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 24, 2012 – 7:28 pm

The Vikings offense mustered just seven 1st downs and 102 net yards of offense in the opening two quarters of play on Friday night at Mall of America Field. But because of a stout performance from the first-team defense, the Vikings entered the locker room at halftime of their third preseason game trailing by just a FG – 6-3.

San Diego’s offense has not fared much better than the Vikings group, picking up just five first downs and accumulating just 80 yards of offense on 34 snaps. QB Charlie Whitehurst, who started the game because San Diego chose to rest Philip Rivers (and plenty of other starters, too), has completed 7 of 16 attempts for 72 yards. The Chargers have gained 35 yards rushing on 14 carries and have converted just 2 of 9 third-down attempts.

Several Vikings defenders are standing out in the 1st half, including All-Pro DE Jared Allen. Last year’s sack king has 2.0 tonight, and both LB Jasper Brinkley and DT Fred Evans have gotten to Whitehurst as well. LB Erin Henderson is having a solid game and S Jamarca Sanford has collected 4 tackles while starting alongside Harrison Smith.

San Diego will open the 2nd half with the ball, as both they and the Vikings first-team offense will look to turn things around in the 3rd quarter. The Vikings defense will look to keep things the same.

( And plenty of other starters, too ) So basically it was the Vikings 1st team against the Chargers 2nd team? I really don’t think that’s much to talk about. What an insult, let’s throw our backups against the Vikings starters to see who is worth keeping. The worst part about is, WE STUNK! AWFUL! PLAYED LIKE POOH POOH, stunk up the stadium and even made my beer taste bad. The team should be ashamed of themselves from last nights showing. 1st team against 2nd team and that is the best they could do, GOD HELP US.

Starters against backups and who was the ones to go in to the locker room at the half with their tails stuck between their legs? Not the backups.

I think its smart, seeing what the back ups can do against starters. Then I would of liked to see if Ponder could of pulled the Vikes out of a whole! this is the same ol stuff, they need to try new stuff, this stale get us no where way has got to go. Seasons starting, they better think of something.

The defense played a solid game but our offense stunk up the joint! I am a huge fan and i bout fell asleep! Ponder needs to get this team in gear ASAP! If he dont put JWebb in. At least he is an exciting player that is fun to watch.Your not going to fall asleep watching an explosive player like Webb! CMON PONDER!! Get these guys fired up!

JE, can we please stop calling for Joe Webb to replace Ponder? I will grant he’s an amazing athlete and we need to utilize him, but the guy isn’t an NFL QB. What has he done in preseason going against 3rd and 4th string players? Nothing! What did he do before this season? Played one good game against Philly that meant nothing, that’s it. Ponder isn’t going to be Peyton Manning week in and week out, especially since going into his first year as a starter. The guy had no training camp last year and didn’t get the preperation he needed as a rookie.

Looking at the active roster it says that Joe Webb,#14 plays a position called QB. Ithink that stands for quarterback. If Joe Webb couldnt play it he would not be on the team as one!! You think he just won a roster spot on wheel of fortune. If JWebb could not play Speilman and the coaching staff would cut him. Joe Webb can and is a NFL QB. End of story!! O,and that does not mean i dont like Ponder. To many people just dont want to give JWebb any credit for the work that he has put in to make it in this league.
