6 Keys To Vikings-Chargers Preseason Tilt Tonight

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 24, 2012 – 3:40 pm

The Vikings welcome the San Diego Chargers to Mall of America Field tonight for each team’s third preseason contest of 2012. While we wait for kickoff, let’s go over a few keys to the game…

– Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier indicated all week that his offensive starters will play into the 3rd quarter. That gives the Vikings offensive staff an opportunity to go into the locker room at halftime knowing they’ll have a drive with their starters in the 2nd half. If the Chargers are able to slow a particular area of the Vikings offense in the 1st half, look for the Vikings to come out in the 2nd half with an answer. It would be a significant positive sign for the Vikings first-team offense if they can have a productive drive to open the 3rd quarter before giving way to the backups and reserves.

– One more offensive key – no sacks allowed. This is on Vikings receivers and QB Christian Ponder as much as it’s on the offensive line. Receivers need to wiggle open – especially important since starting WR Jerome Simpson won’t be as heavily involved tonight – and the QB needs to get rid of the ball on time. And of course the offensive line needs to provide a pocket in which Ponder can step up and deliver.

– It’s a big night for Jasper Brinkley. Since missing all of last season and some of the offseason program with an injury, Brinkley has made progress as the man in the middle of the Vikings defense. Tonight Brinkley has a chance to accelerate that progression and instill confidence in coaches and fans that he can be the type of LB the Vikings defense needs. You’ll know Brinkley is playing well if you see him in the backfield early on run plays and if San Diego has trouble passing on early downs.

– The Chargers will have several starters out of action, including RB Ryan Mathews, giving the Vikings defense an opportunity to clamp down on an opponent and build some confidence. The Vikings run defense, specifically, took a huge step forward last week and I think they’ll do so again tonight. Add in home field advantage, and you can expect a sharp performance from the Vikings defense against San Diego tonight.

– The Vikings special teams units have performed well all of training camp and the preseason, but there’s still one missing element that would be nice to see before the regular season opens – a big kickoff or punt return. Kickoff and punt coverage has been solid and the Vikings return units have had sound blocking, so now it’s time for a returner to stick his foot in the ground, make a cut and rip off a big return.

– Rookie K Blair Walsh has had a nice preseason, hitting on 7 of 8 FGs and all of his PATs, along with booming 5 touchbacks. Another quality outing from Walsh is to be expected tonight as his confidence grows and the team’s and fans’ confidence in him grows as well.

    Yes, it is preseason, but a big step up from a dull, home practice.

    I wonder if we will see a 3rd quarter drive from our starters if we have a commanding lead at the half. I Heard Frazier say only that the starters will play through the first half and perhaps more. Kinda vague. Not sure if I buy Wobschalls theory on the subject. Either way ITS THE VIKES!!! I dont care if it is pre-season or not. Snort a line or something Titus.

    With the Vikes at home, I expect a breakout 2nd half. If the team management expects to sell out the season, they had better motivate the players to make a showing. So far, for this game, I am NOT impressed. Just because you got a new stadium doesn’t mean that you can slack off. Offense must pick it up to keep the fans wanting to pay $40-$50 for a POS seat this season.

  87. By Frederick Jones on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

    How are the Vikings going to improve this offensive line?

    Perhaps they need to be chasing “the little chickens” like in the movie Rocky!

  88. By odark30 on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

    Impressed with the defense in the half able to hold SD to 6 points. Offensively we should be able to run better than we are even with AP out. Still this team rests on AP’s shoulders this season which is very dangerous. This is supposed to be a running team. SO WHERE IS THE RUN???????????????

    @EL,

    The jones has been saying 8-8 would be great. Perhaps most of the 8 wins will have to come in the second half of the season.

    However the defense has looked great in spurts. The DBs need to be more consistent and catch the football!!!

    Lost a lot of faith in Walsh for FG. This would be a tie game right now. Also I cant believe Harvin couldnt hold on to that deep pass for TD in the first quarter. Too many mistakes. I hope we can iron this out before game 1

    @Spoiler,

    I agree with your statement, I just meant that the Vikings haven’t jelled yet. They need to improve, it seems before they can beat anyone.

    I know it’s preseason, but Ponder really looks tentative and confused tonight, even when he has time. Receivers aren’t creating much space – SD DBs that good? Hey C. Johnson, try moving FORWARD when the ball is snapped will ya? Defense looks solid, but several SD starters missing on offense.

    I may have had a different take on Frazier’s half-time interview, but….. is that ok, when fans pay “premium prices” to see a quality game? I don’t think so. Take control of the team and MAKE them play a quality game. I played many sports and always gave my best. It didn’t matter if we were in a situation where we were in contention.

    When your First Team can’t get anything done versus a team where the majority of their first team is off the field, and you think it is ok? Then, you had better rethink what you consider a decent effort. You are playing in front of your home fans……. or doesn’t that matter anymore. Are these players/owners so greedy that money is now more important than the love of the game?

    All teams have specialists. Punt return, kickoff return, 3rd down-short yardage runners, etc.. Why can’t we have specialists as quarterbacks?? Ponder as the starter, with Webb as the the scrambler/specialist for 3rd down. Just thinking outside the box?!?!?

    @EL—————–not bad thought really. Some would argue that it would disrupt momentum. But if you need to be changing the ball handler in the middle of a drive there cant be too much momentum happening. I would not be surprised to see those kind of things happening in the not too far future of the NFL. Couple decades maybe?

    @ odark30, I think that the time will come where there may be an advantage to going to a two quarterback offense. Right now, it seems that it is more for the fans than the organization. Once the fans decide that it may be a good idea, it may change the game considerably. If that were to happen, it may benefit the owners/stock holders, as their bottom end would be see a better return for the money.

    Huge showing for the defense. That takes a lot of worry off my mind. The offense situation was pretty ugly tonight. BUT, it is hard to be worried in the pre-season. There is still time to fix problems AND a few of our key starters did not play. I cannot make harsh judgements in this 3rd pre-season game.

    @Spenc——————–were you the one mixing rum+cokes pre-game? Cmon. the defense was impressive. Look back at our D record against the pass last year and tell me that we did not have a good game. Have faith….

    Odark- To answer your question on the KO penalty that was Jarius Wright.

    @Spencer
    I really think they are trying to hide Felder out so he clears waivers and can be put on the practice squad.. If they can’t see him, there’s no interest.. He played really well at SF.. That’s the only explanation for what I see..
    Jones has not been impressive!!
    Carr has been horrible!!
    Burton and Bowman haven’t shown anything.. Someone else give me a logical explanation..
    We all watched the same SF game!! Maybe we’ll see Thursday!!

    Aside from that we are a run based team and are not yet playing AP.

    @Immure————-thanks man. I still have perma-grin from that penalty. Go Jarius!!!!!!!!!!! Its pretty rare when football makes me laugh that hard. I almost fell off the couch

    Webb threw better than Ponder this game.

    But that has been my point, the QB is a reflexion of the offense. Webb had better protection so he threw better than Ponder who had very little blocking on throwing plays.

    The problem with the Vikings offense is mainly the offensive line. Kalil made his block on most of the throwing plays, you cannot say that about anyone else.

    I saw 71 and 74 behind the play a lot after passing downs. So much for the Charlie Johnson is a guard “science.” We out thunk ourselves on that one. I bet there is a better guard on the roster than Johnson. I hope we discover him.

    The defense looked better today. I still wonder if we can guard people though.

    something about that duo of felder and gatewood. coaches want both on the PS

  154. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

    I doubt it– you don’t get the endorphins going on a motorcycle. I was flying– at one point I showed this dude who is boss– hit 26mph and was accelerating– and two little kids ran out in front of me– now that gets your adrenaline going. No, you sit on a motorbike and the bike propels you– getting in prime fitness is a much bigger high.

    @Jones
    What has Jones done that’s been impressive? He gave up several completions in the SF game while Felder was on the other corner.. They couldn’t even throw Felders way.. Go back and watch that game!!
    Id hate to lose Felder.. I don’t think he’ll clear waivers and I’d hate to see him land at the other team in our div. that’s hurting in the secondary!! GB..!

  156. By odark30 on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

    @ Titus———————–I can respect that. But let me tell you there are are plenty-o-endorphin rush on a motorcyle if you drive…..expressively? wind in your face @ 100+ MPH then slam on the brakes to make a hard leaning corner only to get back on wide open throttle……………..mmmmmmmmmmm tasty
