Three Takeaways From Vikings Preseason Debut

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 11, 2012 – 3:10 am

The Vikings made their 2012 preseason debut on Friday night, dropping a 17-6 decision to the San Francisco 49ers at a blustery Candlestick Park. Rookie K Blair Walsh capped the game’s opening drive with a 39-yard FG that cut straight through the 20 mph gusts that swirled inside the stadium, but that was the only lead the Vikings would have for the evening.

San Francisco answered with a TD later in the 1st quarter to take a 7-3 and eventually took a 17=6 lead into the locker room at halftime. Neither team scored in the 2nd half.

For the Vikings, QB Christian Ponder was good-not-great, completing 4 of 9 passes for 80 yards. RB Toby Gerhart was solid and strong, rushing the ball 5 times and gaining 31 yards, with a long rush of 16 yards. The Vikings defense struggled stopping the 49ers ground game, allowing over 100 rushing yards in the 1st half and 260 in the game.

The thrill of victory and agony of defeat take a back seat in the preseason, though, as teams are looking to find “wins” within the exhibition games. There are position battles to be settled and roster spots to be won, and that is the focus for NFL teams and their followers during the preseason.

With that in mind, here are three takeaways on my mind as I sit on the team’s charter flight back to Minneapolis…

Blair Walsh impresses in first NFL game
I’ve been a big supporter of Blair Walsh’s since the Vikings selected him in the 6th round. His leg strength was never questioned, and I didn’t find his dip in accuracy during his senior season at Georgia as concerning as others did. The kid was an 88.8% kicker as a sophomore and junior, and most of his misses during his senior year came on FGs from 40 or 50+ yards.

Regardless, there were no concerns about Walsh’s accuracy on Friday night. He converted both of his FG attempts, the first from 39 yards and the second from 26. Keep in mind, the nasty wind gusts did nothing to help matters, either. In addition to his accuracy on FG tries, Walsh’s leg strength was on display during kickoffs. He logged one touchback on a kick that was blasted through the endzone, and then his other two kickoffs were 6 and 8 yards into the endzone. During the regular season, teams will not be taking those kicks out of the touchback area.

The benefit of Walsh’s touchbacks – opponents’ average drive start will be closer to their own 20 – will far outweigh any accuracy issues he has on FGs. As any defensive player or coordinator and they’ll tell you that pinning a team at or inside the 20 is a big-time advantage for the defense. With Walsh, the Vikings will be doing much more of that in 2012 than they have in recent seasons (Vikings ranked 31st in opponents’ average drive start in 2011).

Run defense missed Jared Allen, Kevin Williams and Antoine Winfield
The Vikings held out DE Jared Allen, DT Kevin Williams and CB Antoine Winfield on Friday night, giving the veterans a break from the action while also giving younger players more opportunity. And the absence of three quality run stoppers showed, with San Francisco gashing the Vikings defense on the ground seemingly at will in the 1st half.

One part of you gets frustrated when the opponent is able to run the ball so easily. But the other part of you knows that without Allen, Williams and Winfield in the mix, the defense is much more vulnerable. It would’ve been nice to see other players step up and stymie the 49ers ground game, but I’m not worried about the Vikings run defense just yet. If the Buffalo Bills and San Diego Chargers are able to do in the next two weeks what the 49ers did this week, then we’ll have some concerns.

Offensive line displays improvement
I was pleased with the performance of the Vikings first-team offensive line. RB Toby Gerhart averaged 6.2 yards per carry on 5 attempts and neither Ponder nor Joe Webb were sacked while the first-team offensive line was in the game. Several times Ponder was able to settle into a pocket after dropping back, and on his52-yard pass to WR Stephe Burton Ponder was afforded the time and space to step up into the pocket to deliver the throw.

First-round pick LT Matt Kalil looked solid in his debut. He will be the first to admit there’s room for improvement, but it was a good beginning for Ponder’s new blindside protector. C John Sullivan had no issues with snaps and RT Phil Loadholt was sound in his technique and discipline.

“The athlete” Joe Webb seems to be regressing at the QB position instead of getting better…

This was just not a bad first preseason game…Webb has had many struggles in training camp also…

On the other hand…M Bethel-Thompson looks like a QB with a strong arm worth taking more time to devolope for the future…This young man has potential !!!…

McLeod showed enough to this fan already last night…That if the Vikings do not have Bethel-Thompson on the final 53 man roster…

McLeod WILL NOT make it past “the waiver wire” to make it onto the Vikings practice squad after the final cuts are made…IMO..

Sage is more than capable of being a solid number 2 QB…

So when the final cuts are being made…Who do the Vikings keep as the number 3 QB ???…

Positives from the game last night…

WOW !!!…The Vikings have a GREAT group of TE’s !!…

Ponder and Bethel-Thompson played well…But plenty of room for improvement…

Running game was solid…Good depth at that position also…

First team offensive line did well…

Guion (before getting hurt) was running down people early with Solomon and Sherels making some plays and tackled
    well…

#67 DE Anthony Jacobs played well last night…

    Negatives…

WOW !!…Where were are LB’s early in the game ???..This will be a big question mark heading into the season…

Defense as a whole looked out of position ???

Webb was TERRIBLE !!!…nuff said about that…

    WR’s dropped some easy p a s s e s !!…

All the QB’s were staring down their WR’s…If this continues…Defenses will be getting plenty of interceptions this fall…

Sounds bad…But it is only the first preseason game…

Overall I liked what I saw in this game…When you take in consideration many of the veterans were sitting watching the game…

  15. By OTKalil2012 on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

    @sandiamond…

Vikes need to find a solid (tall) WR when teams start cutting players loose…

I even saw a few on the 49ers last night in their rookie class that looked pretty good…

Vikings would be wise to keep an eye on a few of those young rookies… ; )

  16. By OTKalil2012 on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

You would think the coaching staff will be watching the waiver wire closely at 2 positions…

Unfortunately, Joe Webb couldn’t hit the water if he were standing on the beach, so we need to realize our mistake and switch him to WR where he can use his illusiveness to both get open and get YACs.

This team will make solid strides this year. Keep in mind that there wasn’t going to be much shown last night, since it was preseason game #1 AND we’ll be playing the 49ers in a few weeks during the regular season. With all that in mind, I think the #1 offense sounds like it did a good job (I didn’t get to see or listen to the game).

Sounds like the defense will be getting chewed on this week in practice for getting chewed up during the game.

Will McLeod be the Vikings future Caesar ???

The Vikes should be able to replace Childs soon after the roster cuts. A WR with some nfl exp would not be a bad idea at all

Sad note: Honey Badger kicked off the LSU team and lost his scholarship. No football this year

It was the first preseason game. No need to overreact about anything. BUT:

Bowman looked more effective than Carr

    Webb was awful

The Lawfirm looked like he could be a project QB

Charlie Johnson didn’t have a great game

Mistril Raymond looked like the late round draft pick that he is

    The kicker played well

    Undrafted Sherles was okay

Ponder was impressive, and then unimpressive, and then impressive. Still a ?

The CFL’er had a nice game for himself

    Toby is a beast

Okay, let’s be serious. The Vikings “#1″ Defense in the game might as well have been the #2 defense. I mean, it’s not like 3 of their best defensive players weren’t playing…. Allen, Williams, and Winfield. Let’s be serious now. While I would have liked for them to have actually gotten a TD, I’m not worried yet. And come on AD! Gotta get healthy, I think those two field goals would have been touchdowns if you had been around, but I guess it was good to see Blair get some work in.

  25. By heidi on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

Not too bad for preseason! Pretty much agree with @OTKALIL, Webb played like hot garbage, Ponder is looking stronger tan a year ago, Betel Thompson could be a good addition–need to see more!! As far as others the O line needs to give a lil moreprotection and I think I’d like to see more of the rookie Audi Cole!!

  26. By Woodboat on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

I bet you would, heidi ;). I’m waiting to hear from those of you that keep saying that Webb should play over Ponder. I think we’ve all seen why Webb will NEVER be a serviceable QB in the league. I don’t think he could be any more inaccurate and still be allowed to put on a jersey. Ponder might not be the answer, but we KNOW Joe isn’t.

It’s pretty sad when the 49ers 3rd string QB plays better than our 2nd string QB… we definately need to find a QB that can push Ponder for that starting role, because that guy doesn’t exist on the Vikes roster.

  27. By Woodboat on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

I know that the refs weren’t calling anything tonight, but I gotta stand up and say good job to our starting O Line and tip my hat to Loadholt. I get on him pretty hard so it’s only right to come correct when he plays well… good job, Phil!

Ponder gave me no reason to think he can’t be successful in the league. He made some nice throws, and more importantly, he made some good decisions playing against one of the best defenses in the league. I know the 9ers didn’t have their top 11 on the field, but they weren’t playing total pre-season vanilla out there and CP looked pretty darned good.

All in all, the starting offense looked pretty decent.

  28. By Woodboat on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

Our defense is predicated on getting QB pressure with our line, and half of it wasn’t on the field. That being said, our run containment was garbage. I know that we have a lot of new faces on that side of the ball, including a new coordinator, but they’d better get their ducks in a row pretty quick if they don’t want to vie for that prestigeous “1st pick in the draft” title. The offense is decent, but not good enough to overcome this…

  29. By mad1dem on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

lets look at this in a good way i think we we’re missing around 5 starters allen, winfield, williams, Smith who played with 2nd team, and middle LB someone needs to step up or we need to sign some one backups could be better. By the way i didnt see simson out there..

I also live outside of Minnesota in San Diego, CA and I to would like the website to watch the Vikings. I stayed up to catch the 1st qtr of the game on replay last night and I was appaled at the defense. For a qb to run 78 yards against any defense is un-acceptable even if we were missing a few players and to give up almost 300 yards rushing is totally un-acceptable in the NFL period……………!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. By Connor on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

Joe webb can still be a good 2nd string qb if you use him like a tebow.
But that wont work with this team so switch him to wr the guy could be a productive wr for this team especially with the lack at the position

  32. By texasranters on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

Joe Webb can run but that’s it. He’ll never be an NFL QB so why waste half a game with him under center? M Bethel-Thompson has a much better chance of turning into something we can use down the road. Frasier is taking a page out of Chilli’s book and sticking with a player that’s not worth the time and effort, and look where that got him.

  33. By QB on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

I noticed in his press conference that Frasier said he would continue to look at Webb at QB to make sure he’s in the right spot. Kinda leaves the door open for a possible switch to receiver. IMO, he’s too good and athelete to carry a clip board, but not consistant enough to play QB

DelawareDon – Every time I visit, there are messages saying that my version isn’t supported either, but it is able to view everything just fine anyways. I think they’re just someone’s lame attempt at forcing you to download and/or buy something you don’t need.

There are popup widgets that show up over the video every now and then, including right when you first open one of the video links. Just look for and click the “close” or ‘x’ button when it becomes available (sometimes there will be a countdown before it becomes active) and things should work fine.

Mcleod look great, Elimimien looked good, webb does us no good, trade him, he can play qb, run etc. do the Vikes utilize him? no, we should just trade him for a player that can contribute right now. Walsh looked good. I would have to say Mcleod the qb was the most impresive, he showed poise, no how, skills of a player who has been in the NFL for a few years. Is it to early to make Mcleod #1 qb….

Wow…I’m surprised to see so many people giving up on Webb now after seeing him play poorly for the first time. I know Webb is not going to be our starter, but I still like what he offers this team.

I think that the coaches should be blamed for some of his issues last night. It looked as if they were telling him to change his style, and try to remain in the pocket as long as possible but there was no pocket provided by the linemen blocking for him. When he stepped up into any kind of pocket, a defender would bust through the fusuma and “the pocket” left him with no room to wriggle free for a run.

Because of that, we saw a different Joe Webb. If he continues to play that way, his game-changing ability when the starter gets injured will disappear.

  43. By Parody on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

JEC334 – Anybody see those pässes that Burton dropped? That’s what I was seeing at camp. He had the one good reception of the day, but then also dropped at least 2 throws. I don’t think he deserves a spot on the 53-man roster, yet.

  44. By Parody on Aug 11, 2012 | Reply

Vikings1 – Carr definitely was a disappointment last night. I got the impression that he’d be challenging Winfield for the starting spot on the outside, but now that he could not live up to my expectations I’m hoping that one of the other players can outperform my expectations.

Sherels needs to keep on playing well and Robinson needs to convince the league that it was a mistake to let him fall to the third round!

Sherels looked pretty good last night.. Carr wasn’t impressive at all.. Reggie Jones saw a lot of action from the 49er QBs and WR with Felder on the other side.. Felder did well also.. They didn’t complete a pass on his side.. Felder downed a punt at the 2yd line also.. All and all he was one of the more impressive guys in the secondary to me.. I think he should land one of those 5-6 corner slots..

OMG, some of these comments on Webb are laughable. IT IS NOT THE COACHING STAFFS FAULT THAT JOE WEBB IS NOT A QB. Changing his style???HAHAHAHAHHA. Webb took off and ran more often than not. More than once, he could have stepped up in the pocket and still had protection. His problem is that he just keeps dropping back. YOU CANNOT DO THAT. You have to step up in the pocket when pressure comes, granted the middle protection broke down a few times, but Webb showed us all why Ponder is the starter. I just love how you webb cheerleaders look for excuses.

In other news, Bethel-Thompson showed some flashes of ability. He looks like he needs to learn some more pocket awareness, but some of thows throws reminded me of someone…..can’t place my finger on who…..I have a feeling that the QB depth will look like this.
    1-Ponder
    2-Rosenfells

It was clear that Cook didnt miss a beat in the pre-season opener by not allowing a single catch. So his spot as the #1 CB is set in stone. Barring injury Winfield will be in the nickel. So who starts opposite of Cook?!??

-Chris Carr gave up the TD and was poor in run-support.
-Zacakry Bowman made a few plays, but Colin Kaepernick was the Quarterback..
-Brandon Burton gave up a completition to AJ Jenkins.
-Reggie Jones looked flat out awful. Gave up numerous completitions.
-Bobby Felder looked solid IMO, didnt allow a single catch..not bad for a rookie.
-Marcus Sherals also looked good, but hes a Nickle CB at best.

Also, the OL Murhpy…I hope he takes his degree from Harvard and finds another job because it isn’t as an NFL OL. He was simply awful. He is going to get a QB killed.

The rookie QB who took over at the end of the game had a nice arm, but you could see he didn’t have much in the way of timing with the receivers. The pick was really a bad throw from a position and a timing standpoint.

Really disappointed in the LB’s play. I kept wondering who was playing as I hoped it wasn’t the 1st string all through the first half. Pitiful play on both coverage and running game.

    At Virgina State Viking Fan…

Webb was hurried on a number of plays, this is true. So if he is hurried on one play, does that excuse him from the accuracy of a scud missle on the next play? He had PLENTY of time on numerous pass attempts, and JUST COULD NOT HIT HIS RECEIVER… ala Tavaris Jackson. He is inaccurate. He can’t properly target his receiver. He cannot deliver the ball to the guy that wants to catch the ball (the one in the Vikes jersey, anyway). Am I forgetting anything….oh, yeah… he sucks as an NFL quarterback.

That pick by McLeod should have been his second of the night. He telegraphs his pas ses horribly, but that can be fixed. The one that did get picked he had no business throwing… off balance, across his body, falling away from the WR without setting his feet… unless he’d gonna get the equipment manager to sew a number 4 on his chest, he’d better rethink throws like that.

The O Line played pretty well, at the outset. They were going against one of the best front 7 in football (well, minus a guy or two…) and looked pretty decent. Remember, this offense is going to be a 3 to 5 step drop kind of deal. QBs need to get rid of the ball quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Truth is, Cook isn’t great, but he’s probably the best we have, Winfield included. In general, you can’t fix a 3-13 team overnight, without changing the entire coaching staff. I don’t think this team underachieved last year… they just didn’t have the talent. We’re better this year, but not that much better. I’ll be content with 8-8 this year, and build on that next year.

I say trade Webb or turn him into a receiver, maybe defensive back. Get to work right away on Mcleod, he seemed to be developing alot faster than Ponder. They looked like they were overloaded with info, team play suffered. Defensive secondary can double there strength by playing as a team and then becoming better as a whole before individual standout plays! My thoughts-

Ponder did a great job. Drove us down field twice. WR’s could’t finish.

Webb was terrible. Scared little bunny. Looked to run and not pass. Looked like McNabb with his short pass to the ground. Not impressed at all.

Burton, Kalil, Taylor and Gearhart were amazing…

Secondary gave up way to many playsd and Cook was a disappointment. Can he not catch a QB? Better yet, can Sanford not play his freaking position?

    Where was Harrison?

Lastly, kinda surprised at our defensive line. They showed great pressure the first half and really fizzled when San fran’s third QB came in….

Overall I am happy with the Vikes play but I am wanting to see more people really step up and stand out… I bleed Purple…. Nuf said…

Oh and one last thing. I am sorry if I tick people off at this remark, but Frazier needs to get some energy. I am sorry but every time they showed him on the sidelines, he is just standing there with the same blank expression on his face. No emotion, no energy. If you watched the 49ers coach, he was animated, cheering his guys on, fist pumping, jawing at them and into it. C’mon Frazier, show a little excitement for the game and your team? Many people comment about his demeaner and I say that if he is expecting energy and excitement out of his players, they they ought to expect it out of him too… Just a thought. We also know that Blair Walsh has the proverbial “stuff”. Yet, there are some negatives to take away as well. Team depth does not appear to be satisfactory. I’m always hopeful, but I wouldn’t expect to see much improvement over last year’s record..I still see us as a sub-500 team this year, maybe 6-10. The NFC Central has 3 very competitive teams that we play twice, so even if our out-of conference schedule is light(er), I think the math for 8-8 is very optimistic given where this team is at. Having said that, I’ll be watching every game with great interest – 2nd year Ponder, 1st yr Kalil, Gerhart in for AP on offense – gotta see that. On defense, well, there’s nowhere to go but up at this point. But it’s time that we start seeing some big QB sacks and stuffing people in the backfield on 3rd and short for a change – especially in the 4th qtr. And to Les and the rest of this coaching staff…Chilly is a distant memory now, so no excuses – it’s on you guys to get these players properly prepared, motivated and in position to compete! Do you guys have what it takes? I sure hope so for the fans’ sake. GO VIKES!

HA HA HA. This drink heavy vikings fan knows it all. freakin arm chair QB’s, thinks he knows more about the team than the coaches, gm, owner, QB. Heck, this guy knows more about football than Bud Grant. The mess the Vikings are in right now, have a lot to do with the Childress era. Rather than build a team from the ground up, chilly preferred to plug holes with FA veterans. That is why we are hurting so bad right now. Put a little more thought into what you are saying, drink heavy.

I really wish people would stop blaming the coaching staff for everything. People who do that, really do not know much about the game. Players execute, coaches manage. When players do not execute, half of you blame the coaches. Coaching has less to do with execution than most of you seem to think.

  198. By ex-player on Aug 12, 2012 | Reply

The same can be said about half time adjustments. I’ve heard that argument before. Unless you have been in a locker room at half time, you don’t know what a half time adjustment is. As for last season, why adjust at halftime when you are ahead by 17 or more? Never, I mean never, fix what is not broken.

For all those that think Webb belongs under center……told you so. he has talent and could be a top ten receiver if they would end this project. MBT showed he has the skill set to be a solid QB. Remember he was in another league before the NFL. So he is not rookie to pro ball. I think we go into the season with 1. Ponder, 2. Sage, 3. MBT. WR—Simpson, Webb, Taylor, Harvin, Walters, Burton, Wright. Walters has excellent hands and gets separation for DB. Plus he is a great option at PR. I wish they would have targeted him more. My understanding is that he is having a very solid camp and has made some outstanding catches with no drops. I am excited to see the true #1s out there. It looks like we will have a solid team. Mitral and Sanford look to be playing themselves out of the starting lineup. I see Blanton and Smith possible becoming our starters. Smith showed great instincts I also see Josh Robinson taking that other corner spot. I am excited to see what he can do. I think that the team will gel over the next few games and we are going to be a very strong team. I don’t see us as the bottom feeders, but we definitely have a tough battle.

By the way, the reason Webb struggled is because he held on to the ball to long. He can not make complex reads, and he holds on to the ball instead of stepping up in the pocket. I watched the game and just shook my head in disappointment.

ex-player you could not be any more off base in your thinking, if a player is not making the grade the coaches are the ones who must realize this and remove that player from the game, it is the coaches who come up with the game plan and must make adjustments if things are going wrong, players are only pawns, if the master minds behind the teams fail then the team fails, otherwise why have coaches at all if the players are the brains and bronze behind a team? If a team has a QB & a coach that can think on their feet as Grant & Tarkenton did we would still be at the top of the NFL.

True Titus sorry if I used the wrong word just a typo, and as for you spoiler alert why don’t you do the same. I am an ex player as well ex player so I know what I am talking about. If this team fails it will be mainly because the staff failed at their job. They and only they have the ability to put the best player in the game and remove them who are not living up to their given responsibility. It is the coach that runs the team; the players only follow his lead.

Then it is the coaches and the teams staff who have failed the team by not getting what they need to win, just ask my good friend Bud Grant.

Good night and peace to U-All.

YOU can be a great NFL coach but get fired over lack of acquired talent. Management has to work for you to help find the talent, although guys like Dennis Green were able to find their own talent. Green was underated, he was one of the best coaches in NFL history…or my middle initial isn’t L.

Actually it was Brian Billick who suggested this on THE FAN.

Why is everybody defending Webb by saying “he was with the 2nd string” umm wasn’t he playing against the 2nd string of the other team and still couldn’t look them off. Not to mention Webb couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn from 10 feet away. They should keep the law firm and move Webb to receiver or trade him time to move forward instead of being stuck in the mud

  221. By Frederick Jones on Aug 14, 2012 | Reply

    @Rick,

Althought the 1st string is not a great OLine, they did better against the stalwart 49ers defense than our 2nd string did against their 2nd string.

Joe will get his chance with the first string, then you can make your judgements.

Everson Griffen is always being touted as a great player. He’s had more Vikings.com blogs dedicated to him than any other player not named Harvin, Peterson, Greenway, or Allen.

Everson Griffen should be starting, or SHUT UP!!!

ll be pushed. However, continuous exercise and fitness regimen also causes extreme soreness and muscle tension that gets increasingly worse if you do not take good care of the sore muscles and tensions that your
body experiences. This feeling is magnified even more when players glance
at the medals hung around their necks and trophies given to them and seeing their name so
clearly and elaborately engraved on metal – making the achievement more permanent and infinitely theirs.
