Vikings Thank Minnesota Troops

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 4, 2012 – 8:59 am

In a rare moment off the training camp football fields, several members of the Vikings spent time visiting hundreds of Minnesota troops who have recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, tackle Phil Loadholt and Special Teams Coordinator Mike Priefer surprised men and women attending the “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” event on the campus of Minnesota State University Saturday morning.

Allen, Loadholt and Priefer all have deep connections to service. Loadholt’s father was a career United States Army Sergeant 1st class, and “Big Phil” has long been involved with visiting troops at the United States Army recruiting station. Allen’s brother is a United States Marine, following in the footsteps of the Allen’s grandfather, who also served for more than 20 years. Allen is a long-time supporter of veterans; in 2010, he founded “Homes for Wounded Warriors,” a charity that provides handicap-accessible homes for veterans returning from duty. He also took part in the NFL’s USO tour to Iraq in March 2009.

Priefer’s involvement goes beyond support. After playing quarterback and wide receiver at the United States Naval Academy, Priefer flew helicopters as a Naval officer for six years, doing tours of duty on the USS America in the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea.

    The local newspaper wrote about playing Winfield less this year. That is a good idea since he is now 35.

    If the offensive line continues to have injury problems, and quality problems it would be good to see them go to some sort of rotation. The 49ers did that during their glory years.

    According to Bill Cowher the offensive and defensive lines are the heart and soul of a football team. That is why the Vikings will be 8-8 this year. In addition Jones does not want to get his hopes too high.

    Brandon Burton, Bowman, and Sherals need to be cut immediately.

    @Spencer,

    If Marcus Sherels does not make this squad it is because of predjudice against his size (or lack there of).

  15. By Spencer on Aug 4, 2012 | Reply

    Chris Carr and Sherals are the same height…yetCarr isnt going to get cut.

    If Sherals doesnt make the team its solely due to the fact that he just isnt good enough.

    Preseason starts on Friday! I hope we lose that game– don’t show the niners anything and don’t play the starters — don’t get anyone hurt. Put Fred Jones in for Kalili.

    @Spencer,

    Wow, what do you have against Marcus Sherels?

    @Titus,

    Put Titus in for Peterson.

  20. By Spencer on Aug 4, 2012 | Reply

    I have nothing against Sherals- I just think hes wasting valuable roster space.

  21. By Frederick Jones on Aug 4, 2012 | Reply

    @Spencer,

    I tend to think in terms of who will start, and who will make the team, not who will be cut. Why should jones care who gets cut? The only time jones would care if a guy got cut is if they had a HUGE salary. The three guys you mentioned are barely making the minimum.

  22. By Frederick Jones on Aug 4, 2012 | Reply

    @Spencer,

    Sherels is an electrifying return man, and has shown the ability to cover people. Someone said he got beat for a TD on a route. I never saw it, and I missed very little TV time.

    He’s worth more than a roster spot.

  23. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Aug 4, 2012 | Reply

    I would probably score four or five touchdowns Fred. I

  24. By OTKalil2012 on Aug 4, 2012 | Reply

    Well this fan isn’t going to knock what Sherels has done for the team…

    Sherels has the closest yards per carry numbers in kick returns to Harvin…

    Sherels doesn’t drop any kicks…Has sure hands and scampers pretty well…

    And Sherels always seems to be around the football on defense at the end of plays…

    But when all is said and done getting ready for opening day…It looks like the Vikings are going to have to make some tough cuts to get down to a 53 man roster limit…

    But I sure am happy to hear how well many of the new players are doing in the secondary…You can bet it will take time in the early half of the season for the young secondary to really gell…

    But would be great if they can come into their own in the secondary for the tough scedule in the second half of the season…

    Its pretty obvious why Reggie Jones is all of a sudden making a splash in training camp. I think he makes the roster and Felder gets relegated to the practice squad.

    Jones is Ripped!

    @Titus,

    In Track & Field, many of the competitors were trained by US colleges, or clubs. A good example was Mo Farah and Galen Rupp’s finish in the 10K, which was predicted exactly by Runner’s World Magazine.

    America has been generous in other sports like basketball. I’m guessing that other countries have helped the US, but not to the same degree.

    Harvin and Jenkins outside with Wright playing out of the slot. Then starting week 4 we got Jenkins and Simpson outside with Percy doing his thing out of the slot. Harvin played outside with Jenkins a bit last year already, I didnt mind Jenkins at all as a WR before he went down, thought he was playing well.

  66. By rogerthevikefan on Aug 5, 2012 | Reply

    Jenkins may not be fully back from his knee injury. So S. Burton may be the guy across from Harvin till Simpson is back in play.

    Jones — you have a problem with Titus? You keep referring to him in your posts as someone– someone this, someone that. Now someone said Aromodishu is our best WR– yeah, someone said that. You got a problem with that?

    Well #1 tight-end just got a few more attempts a game now… Should just run double tightend sets with #40 as FB, and just Percy on the outside. See if defenses are caught off guard with personal switching to more pass defense.
