Frazier Says CB Robinson Back Soon, TE Carlson Has Knee Sprain

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 1, 2012 – 11:20 am

The Vikings conducted their customary morning walk-thru on Wednesday at 2012 Verizon Vikings Training Camp and head coach Leslie Frazier met with reporters afterward to give an update on his team through the first half-week of work. We’ll post the video in on-demand format soon, but until then I’ll go over a few notes I took from the press conference.

– Frazier said the new practice schedule of walk-thrus in the morning and practices in the afternoon is working well for the team so far. In year’s past, the Vikings conducted their practice in the morning and then a walk-thru in the afternoon. But being able to watch the walk-thru prior to practice to learn which mistakes to correct during the padded practice has been an advantage for the team, Frazier explained.

– TE John Carlson injured his knee on Tuesday and Frazier confirmed that the injury is a Grade 2 MCL sprain that will sideline the Minnesota native for 1-2 weeks. The good news on the injury front, though, is that CB Josh Robinson is expected to take a step forward in his recovery from a hamstring injury today. Frazier said that Robinson might begin working out on the side during practice with the training staff.

– Frazier spoke in glowing terms about rookie TE Rhett Ellison. The Vikings selected Ellison in the 5th round and based on early observations it looks like Rick Spielman and Co. found a good deal. Ellison will likely fulfill multiple roles in the Vikings offense and is the kind of player that will remind Vikings fans of Jim Kleinsasser. Frazier said Ellison’s maturity is notable, and he also said that the rookie has great preparation habits, attention to detail and a work ethic you don’t typically see from a first-year player.

– Antoine Winfield looked to be in tip-top form during the offseason program, and that form appears to have carried into training camp. Frazier said that the coaching staff discussed on Tuesday night the fact that Winfield looks “invigorated” on the field and is showing no signs of slowing down. Frazier noted that is very good news on a number of fronts, not the least of which being that Winfield is a good mentor for the team’s young secondary.

– Frazier was asked about S Jamarca Sanford, who started 15 games for the defense last year and is in the middle of a competition for playing time this year. The area of Sanford’s game that the team is looking to improve is his ability to make plays on the ball down the field. Sanford is built compactly and is an excellent tackler, Frazier said, but now the team is looking for an improvement in his pass coverage. Frazier called Sanford one of the NFL’s premier special teams players, and credited his strength, speed and passion for the game as reasons why he excels in that area of the game.

– On Tuesday Vikings Defensive Coordinator Alan Williams spoke about his philosophy of wanting a “hockey lineup” along the defensive line, drawing an analogy to one of Minnesota’s past times in order to illustrate the point that he wants to rotate the defensive line as much as possible to keep players fresh throughout games and the season. Frazier said that he subscribes to his new coordinator’s theory and is pleased with the depth they have along the line.

– Everson Griffen has made the switch from DE to LB in camp, but Frazier noted that there may be certain situations where they ask Griffen to move back to DE. The focus is still on getting Griffen rote at outside LB to improve that position, but the goal is to make the entire defense better and the team can do that by getting Griffen on the field more frequently.

– For the first time in a long time, E.J. Henderson is not playing middle LB for the Vikings. It’s Jasper Brinkley’s job now, and some are concerned about Brinkley’s injury history. Frazier noted that Brinkley has done well so far in camp, has not been to the training room and made a bit hit in practice on Tuesday. “So far, so good,” Frazier said about Brinkley.

Why is it that our players are hurting themselves in practice, How come they are so out of shape and the season has not started?

  4. By DRS on Aug 1, 2012 | Reply

Alan Williams do not make it too confusing for our boys, you need continuity during the game, do not be like last year when the Vikings staff looked like a deer in the headlights of a on coming car.

Alan Williams are you saying our players out of shape and will need their kindergarten naps during the game, that they cannot play an entire game?

Richard1A — I know what you mean, but that’s mostly the Metro Media like Pelissaro, J Fowler, etc. Just remember that of the 13 games lost last year, 9 were by 7 pts or less and 4 of those were by 4 pts or less. Meaning that it’s not like we were not blown out of every game. We’ve added key personnel, Ponder has his rookie year behind him and our schedule is a little easier than last year. I’m thinking wildcard.

Frazier just had a very good media press conference…

It left me feeling “impressed” with his devolopement being a young head coach…

Last year Les looked tired and over worked..Some what confused and overwhelmed at times…

Check out the very quick, crisp, intelligent and confident responses in his presser…I swear he even looks few years younger…

    Go get em Les !!!…

Getting rid of the “triangle of authority” was a good thing…

Zygi and Mark Wilf are great owners…

    Spielman is a good GM…

And also believe Frazier is a good head coach…

    GO VIKINGS !!!

Carlson has a grade 2 MCL sprain and Fraizer says it will take a week or two depending on Carlson’s pain tolerance. It happened when John was blocking a guy and another guy landed on the back of his legs.

I think having a full offseason as a head coach has really helped Fraizer. He doesn’t seem to be rushing and has a better understanding of his job and team.

I dont know about anyone else, but the way we drafted Harrison Smith is way too eerily similar to the way we got Tyrell Johnson.

    – Predraft consensus was that each was considered the 2nd best Safety in their draft
    – Both were actually the 2nd safety picked overall.
    – Consensus was that there was a huge drop off in Safety talent after them.
    – Vikes gave up a 4th rounder to move up and pick each one.

  43. By Smith on Aug 1, 2012 | Reply

    @rugdog100

    I agree with you.

Out of the 13 losses last year, 3 were big and we definately lost those (CHI, GB and NO). Although, I just recently re-watched all 3 of those games and we were competing in the first half of all 3 games. The second half is when we fell apart.

The other ten losses we had a shot at winning. Even if we would have just won half of those games we would’ve finished 8-8.

So many people are saying the Vikes are the worst team going into the 2012 season. I say there’s no way.

The Rams had games last year where they scored 0 points. We scored TD’s in every one of our games.

REAL MEN APOLOGIZE? Of course they do. But real men also do not hold grudges and walk around in pettiness. Let it go. Mike W. runs this site okay– I would personally run it very differently — with parameters clearly defined. Bloggers would know what is going on, and they would also know what to expect as far as rate of blogs, etc. But Mike W. runs the site haphazardly– that is his way. Real men do not force someone to apologize– OR IT IS NOT A REAL APOLOGY. I would like to see Mike Wobschall address all the loyal bloggers about the time outs and his failure to be upfront with us. BUT, I also am one to make mistakes in life– and I am glad a lot of people extend grace toward me. Let Mike W. be– he is young and tries hard.

John Carlson is already hurt, he was hurt all of last year, but fret not Viking fans, TE/FB Rhett Ellison may be the steal of the draft, especially from the 5th round!! He will have a big year as well as Kyle Rudolph!!!!

Frederick Jones — you are correct. Sow forgiveness. It is the way of the Master.

    61Vikings and Titus,

Out of the 112 posts so far, how many pertained to the injuries of Carlson, and Robinson?

Maybe ten total. Nobody follows the blog topic.

    Politics
    Relationships
    Animals
    Vacations
    School
    Jobs
    Religion

etcetera, etcetera, etcetera are what people talk about on Vikings.com blog.
So Jones reserves the right to do that, like everyone else.

Josh Robinson is day-to-day and Carlson is out 2-3 weeks.

What more is there to talk about?

    F. Jones made this promise at the end of the 2011 season. So far he has kept it. It has been difficult though because some people on here LIE like crazy!
    You know who you are.

    GENTLEMEN,

I AM AS GUILTY AS ANYONE OF CALLING NAMES.

BUT WE MAY HAVE A GOOD TEAM THIS YEAR (8-8 because of the new

    schedule), SO LET’S NOT USE THE S O P H O M O R I C IDEA OF CALLING

VIKINGS PLAYERS, FRONT OFFICE PERSONNEL, COACHES, OR FANS ANY

    NAMES.

WE MUST TRULY BE A TEAM!!!

    Lies ruin trust.

If F. Jones says that Aladdin does not have a magic lamp, and later claims that he did not say it that is a lie. Some person on here repeats this type of lie over and over again, then denies it!!!

Lies and the Lying Liars that say it!
