Going Camping: Kalil Signs, Will Report On Time

Posted by Mike Wobschall on July 26, 2012 – 10:45 am

The Vikings emerged from the 2012 NFL Draft with 10 selections. Three months later, the Vikings will emerge from the offseason and arrive at 2012 Verizon Vikings Training Camp with all 10 selections under contract. The last of the bunch to sign was 1st-round LT Matt Kalil.

Kalil signed his contract at Winter Park late Thursday morning and will report to training camp in Mankato on time with the rest of his teammates, easing the concerns of those who wondered about a holdout. It’s not unusual for 1st-round picks to wait until the last minute to sign their deals, but it’s easy to become concerned when a player who will be so important to the team remains unsigned just days before camp.

Vikings fans can worry no more. Projected to be a cornerstone LT for the next decade, Kalil will be installed as the starter immediately. His presence at LT allows the Vikings to solidify their offensive line by moving Charlie Johnson to LG and holding a robust competition at RG among Joe Berger, Chris DeGeare, Brandon Fusco and Geoff Schwartz.

Is Allen gonna show up or is he still on his own workout program because of his good year last year?

That was a big piece, getting Kalil signed. There is no reason the Vikings can’t have a decent season now!!!

Great news! And just to be clear @southdakotavikingsfan – Allen works out with his own trainer every year during non-mandatory events, so if you were trying to imply that Allen wasn’t showing up bc he might have a big need to switch the source your getting information from

Not getting facts from anywhere, just not a big J.Allen fan, think he is highly overrated

The Jared Allen Show did little to make me like him more

  8. By SouthDakotaVikingsFan on Jul 26, 2012 | Reply

More than half his sacks came when QB was flushed into his arms while he was leaning on the tackle

Jared Allen isnt overrated- hes the best DE in the league.

Jared Allen is phenominal…. Good player, good person too. Don’t know where you get your dislike for him. Now that Kalil is here, I think the both of them are going to be very competitive in a friendly way- Tallying with each other like Legolas and Gimli tallying their kills in Lord of the Rings…. Cant wait.

Jared Allen–22 sacks last year. Over-rated????

  12. By SouthDakotaVikingsFan on Jul 26, 2012 | Reply

Kalil will be a good anchor for the offensive line, he has the pedigree and the size to make a difference. Plus it allows Johnson to move back to guard, now if Loadholt plays to his potential everything will be easier for Ponder if he has enough time to make a decision.

i think it is foolish to call JA over rated… One reason being he had 22 sacks, in year when his secondary was statistically near the worst in history…meaning he had to get to the qb even faster…i doubt more than 5 of those were coverage sacks.

Jared Allen will be in camp this year to shape up Kalil. Dave Dameshek says and I quote “The Minnesota Vikings are legitimately the worst team in the NFL this year”. Well he can go to **** and eat my shorts when the Vikes take everyone by surprise this season. Its not really Daves fault anyway……I never met anyone named Dave that got a fair shake in life.

If JA had someone take a fall like Strahan did to break the record it would have been a done deal. OVERRATED? What a moron. Jared Allen is the best DE in the league…

    OK.Step one, sign the contract.
    Step two,block for Peterson.
Step three, become all pro like your brother.(Panthers)
Welcome to the squad from all of us football geeks on the blog.

Now that training camp is upon us, how about a training camp for all the game “officals” that miscalled so many games last year, one game in particlur, the Viking–Detroit game that had Joe Webb driving for a Touchdown, and win, only to have a Detroit player almost tear Joe’s head off. This happened right in front of the Back Judge, standing 10 feet away! No call! School is open Ref..

How did they miss that call on Detroit?

But guess what, we’ll get another call like that even with better referee training.
    We are only human.

As a big Joe Webb fan, that one stung. But I believe that the calls usually even themselves out by the end of any ball game.

Usually the reffing is fair, it is the fans that are biased on call after call.

Jared Allen was UNDERRATED last year. With that secondary, he should never have had that many sacks.

My hope is that he has a similar year this year!

  20. By rogerthevikefan on Jul 26, 2012 | Reply

@Fredrick Jones- Evens out really? Look at the NFC Championship against the Dirtbag Aints. Never called all those roughing the p@sser penalties and did you forget the phantom p@ss interferance on Leber. Refs have $crewed the Vikings over many many times. It will never even out.

    Kalil!-Ja Das ist gut!

  22. By rogerthevikefan on Jul 26, 2012 | Reply

@Frederick Jones- Sorry I got a little angry there but still the Vikings always seem to get $crewed in the end.

What is a coverage sack? I have heard of it but have yet to see the Vikings get one. I thought they were a myth. J. Allen is a beast he is the best d@mn DE in the league.

  24. By PURPLE 12 on Jul 26, 2012 | Reply

JA is way better than any other DE and he wll break the NFL sack record for a sincle season this year .And at his present pace will be in Canton some day skol Minny ….Go VIKES

I’m really exited about Kalil and Allen being matched up against each other in practices. When its game time, and Allen lies on top of the opposing QB he’s going to think: “Wow that was easy!” Kalil will think the same whenever he blocks for Ponder :D

Jared Allen overrated? With 105 sacks #1 since entering the league in 04. Also, doing it for 2 different teams year in, year out. Being one of the best run stoppers as well, 22 sacks in any league is outstanding.

We’re going to be camping next month. Can anyone give me tips on things you would normally forget to pack so I’m well prepared. There’s going to be water parks, and rides, plus the traditional camping stuff like fishing. We’re going to be staying in tents, not a cabin or RV so we won’t be needing any kitchen stuff I don’t think. Any ideas would be great, thanks!

No way Jared Allen is overrated. And he was at camp last year.

Kalil was the 4th pick of the draft, and in no way was it a waste.

I hope Kalil and Allen get lots of practice together. Kalil will learn a lot from him and Allen will stay sharp.

offensive linemen who just stand there for 5-7 seconds and just be fat and take up space are not athletes….most are a dime a dozen and using a 3rd oh excuse me 4 pick is yes a wasted pick when this team could have gotten a true athlete…that was more needed…hows brynat mckinnie, todd stuesse working out for ya….the secondarie is still going to be a joke and recievers a hodge podge of nobodys… ponder may have a second or 2 more to throw the ball away…..get real…….4th in the nfc north for at least 4-5 more years
