Roster Rundown: Safeties And Tight Ends

Posted by Mike Wobschall on July 19, 2012 – 6:40 am

The Vikings made key additions to the safety and tight end positions this offseason, but they utilized different methods in doing so. At safety, the Vikings looked to the draft to add young talent and infuse the position with competition. At tight end, the Vikings turned to free agency to bolster the position.

Safeties and tight ends are the subject of today’s Roster Rundown. Let’s begin with the safeties…

Four players listed as safeties will return from last year’s team. Jamarca Sanford, who started 15 games in 2011 and is entering his fourth season, has the most experience playing defense of the bunch. Eric Frampton, entering his sixth season, has been a core special teams player for the Vikings since 2007 and should retain at least that role in 2012. The two other returning players are Mistral Raymond and Andrew Sendejo. Raymond started five games last year and Sendejo was added to the active roster via free agency in late November 2011.

The Vikings added two safeties to the roster via the draft, using a 1st-round pick to select Harrison Smith and a 5th-round pick to select Robert Blanton. As a 1st-round pick, the expectation for Smith is that he’ll emerge from training camp with a starting role. Blanton is converting from cornerback to safety and will compete for time at the other safety position. Others who will compete for time at safety are Reggie Jones and perhaps Zack Bowman (he could rotate between cornerback and safety).

Safety is a position to watch during training camp and the preseason. The assumption is that Smith will hold down one starting spot while Blanton, Raymond and Sanford compete for the other position. But don’t be surprised to see others insert themselves into the mix, including Bowman and Sendejo.

—————————————————————————————————————————

The Vikings shed a fair amount of experience at tight end this offseason, with 13-year pro Jim Kleinsasser retiring and nine-year pro Visanthe Shiancoe not returning. But now the position is full of youth and play-making athleticism. Not many teams used more multiple-TE formations than the Vikings a season ago, so this will be an important position to watch develop during training camp and the preseason.

Kyle Rudolph was a 2nd-round pick of the Vikings last year and he came on strong at the end of the season. He and QB Christian Ponder clearly have a good rapport, so it won’t be a surprise to see Rudolph take a huge step forward in 2012. As if one athletic, field-stretching TE from Notre Dame wasn’t enough, the Vikings added John Carlson to the mix during free agency. A Litchfield, MN native, Carlson is a proven talent in the NFL with a pair of 50+ reception seasons and a per-catch average of 11.1 yards for his career.

Behind Carlson and Rudolph, the Vikings have a pair of former Big Ten tight ends who are also talented pass catchers in Allen Reisner and Mickey Shuler. Both have two years of experience and both will have to display an ability to help on special teams as well as on offense to earn a roster spot.

The last player we’ll mention in this space is Rhett Ellison, even though he may eventually be listed as a FB. The Vikings selected Ellison in the 4th round of this year’s draft and he could be asked to fulfill a variety of roles on the Vikings offense, including as a tight end. Billed as a big, physical blocking-type of tight end entering the draft, Ellison displayed fluid route running and pass receiving skills at the Vikings rookie minicamp in May. A blue-collar, nose-to-the-grindstone player, Ellison will quickly become a fan-favorite in Minnesota, similar to how Kleinsasser’s career progressed.

Carlson and Rudolph will be the main threats at TE for the Vikings in 2012. While both are capable blockers, that is not their forte. That leaves opportunity for Reisner and Shuler to prove their worth during training camp; it will also be important for Reisner and Shuler to perform well on special teams during training camp and the preseason.

One position I think the Vikes will be solid for a long time is the TE position!! Rudolph,Carlson and Ellison will all have good years!! If we can keep our QB upright, these three could have the same impact as the NE Pats TE’s!! I also believe the Vikes will have 2 rookies starting at the safety positions with Smith and Blanton!!

  4. By 61Vikings on Jul 19, 2012 | Reply

Starting line-up for the 2012 MV defense:
    DL-Allen,Williams,Guion and Robison!!
    LB-Greenway,Henderson and Griffen!!
    S-Blanton and Smith!!
    CB-Cook and Winfield!!
    Dime-Carr!!
Big surprise here would be Henderson moving to the middle to make room for Griffen at the OLB position, to good of a talent to leave off the field!!
    2 rookies starting at safety!!
Watch for Carr or Robison to push for the starting position at CB moving Winfield to the dime position!!

Starting line-up for the 2012 MV offense:
OL-Kalil,Berger or Johnson,Sullivan, Schwartz or Fusco and Loadholt!!
    TE-Rudolph and Carlson
    WR-Harvin/ Wright and Simpson/Childs/Jenkins
    RB-Peterson and Gerhart
    FB-Ellison
    QB-Ponder
I can see the Vikes using 3 TE’s in a set formation, using Ellison as the FB, the same way they used Kleinsasser!!
If AP isn’t at full strength, look for the best backup RB in the NFL, Toby Gerhart, to fill in as well as he did last year!!
The WR position is going to be fun to watch this year!! Early on with Simpson serving his 3 game suspension, the Vikes will use a lot of combinations, including the rooks out of Arkansas, getting a lot of playing time!!
And finally, QB Ponder needs to have a great year for the Vikes to even consider a playoff spot!! If we can keep him upright, I can see him and the Vikes having a food year!!

Looks like someone is on a timeout. Pretty sure it is one guy pretending to be everyone who said they were going to boycott. Watch, in a few hours there will be about 6 posts in ten minutes all with different monikers, including the name titus and myself.

  14. By vikingsfool on Jul 19, 2012 | Reply

Then there will be zero new posts for a few hours, untill someones timeout ends, then it will start again. Who ever you are, you are almost convincing though.

I can’t wait for the preseason to start. After obtaining a top 3 selection in nearly each round of the 2012 nfl draft you could expect an awesome start in a new season. Everything is possible. It’s the NFL.

  16. By vikingsfool on Jul 19, 2012 | Reply

Everything is possible, but as a life long Vikings fan, you can usually expect the worst of everything.

  17. By Woodboat on Jul 19, 2012 | Reply

Cowherd on ESPN Radio claims that the Vikes are the most hopeless team in the league coming into 2012-2013 due to our prior record and the strength of our division / schedule. I can see that the team has a definate up hill climb this year, but I sure like the moves that Rick has made. At the very least, he has TRIED to fill the voids in the roster, something that hasn’t been done in quite some time. I don’t know if Childress and Frazier were just too close to the players to make objective decisions, but they sure kept some rejects on the squad.

I’m extremely curious about C Ponder. I HOPE that he takes a big step forward this year. He should find himself in a more tenable position this season, with a better O line, TEs that are as good or better than the Shank/Rudolph combo of last year, and a better WR corps. It may be a blessing in disguise if AP starts out slow or on the PUP; maybe the opposing defenses won’t be sending 8 every play trying to stop Peterson. This will also be a defining season for our offensive coordinator. If the offense fails, we need to turn our bloodshot eyes on him.

Our defense can’t be any worse than last year. Brinkley might not have the upside that EJ had (who knows?), but EJ was much too slow last season. With Winfield back, Cook not in the pokey, and Asher Allen not on the team, our CBs look much better. I think we have a chance to see some top quality play at the S position as well.

The only 2 positions I’d have like to have seen addressed were RT and NT. Pat Williams will be missed for his size and athleticism, and Phil Loadholts lack of athleticism is going to be the achilles heel of our offense.

  18. By rogerthevikefan on Jul 19, 2012 | Reply

I hope that Stephen Burton makes the team atleast during Simpson’s suspendsion. I’ld like to see Love beat F**King Loadsofholds out at RT.

  19. By VikingsFool on Jul 19, 2012 | Reply

Woadboat I have the solution to your problem.

Put Loadholt at Nost Tackle. He would take up a lot of space and free up Chad Greenway for a 200 plus tackle year.

I believe the Vikings have the players to do well this year…

But do they have the coaching staff to get it done ??…

This Vikings team is VERY predictable on offense…And a team that takes very few chances on defense…

The first half of the regular season (or first 8 games)…A solid and conservative run first offense…With a solid conservative defense should work well for the Vikings…

But the Vikings second half of the schedule is brutal…With them playing 5 of the last 8 games against division foes…

One thing that has hampered the Vikings in the past is making adjustments in game planning…Conservative games planning might win games early in the year while young players learn their jobs on offense and defense…

But the second half of the season will be the test if any of the young players have learned anything..Because if the Vikings are going to do anything this season…A few of the younger players will have to make some huge plays for them later in the season…On offense and defense…

Will the coaching staff trust those young players and open up the playbook on offense and defense the second half of the season ??…

I believe how Frazier and the rest of the staff handles the second half of the season will go a long way in seeing his long term future as head coach with the team…

The NFL wanted the last few games of the season to mean something , all to often teams that had a couple of game cushion leads in their division and conference would rest players in order to make sure their team was at full strength come playoff time. The NFL was losing revenue when teams would sit out marquee players and television rating would drop because fan felt games would be blow-outs without certain players in them. I like the fact that it makes everyone compete for 16 games and possibly 18 here in the near future.

The analysis of the Vikings not doing well this year stands out as the team is definately in rebuilding mode. I am hoping for a 8-8 season, but I stil think we will be like 5-11 and that means more changes coming to the team. The only person I think has a safe position is Rick Spielman. I think the Wilfs gave him a couple years to turn this around. I don’t think the rest can be said for the coaches or players.

The safety situation is rather simple in my mind. Harrison Smith is without a doubt the front-runner to be the starter day 1 at strong safety. And Mistral Raymond has the inside track to start at FS. Sorry guys, but I just dont believe in Blanton. He had one good Rookie Camp Practice and everyone was ready to anoint him to the Hall of Fame….calm down.

At TE its also simple: Rudolph and Carlson with both get significant playing time, while the rookie Rhett Ellison will be more of the “Kleinsasser” kind of player.

Man, Vikingfool really did go onto the Packer site– I just saw one of their longest blogs– all because he riled them up. Vikingfool, you live up to your name. It is one thing to needle the rival with a post or two during the season, especially when your team is ahead, but to go there and do half the postings when they came off a 15-1 season and we had 3-13– that is lacking not only in class, but, well, you know.

BUT FOR ALL THE CHEESEHEADS TOOTING ABOUT BEING 15-1 last year– HOW DID THAT WORK OUT FOR YOU???? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. I would rather be 3-13 and have an excellent pick in the draft then be nearly perfect and cannot win the first playoff game at home. HA HA HA HA HA.

AURORA, Colo. — Jessica Ghawi narrowly escaped a murderous rampage at a shopping center in Toronto last month, deciding to leave a food court where, moments later, a gunman killed two people and wounded six others.

The incident, and her narrow escape, deeply moved her.

“I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday,” Ghawi wrote on her blog. “I saw the terror on bystanders’ faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don’t know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath.”

In a wicked twist of fate, the aspiring sports journalist was killed Friday in an early morning massacre in a Colorado theater, along with at least 11 others, by a gunman wielding an assault-style rifle, a shotgun, a handgun and canisters of a noxious chemical. Police said 59 others were wounded.

Michael Jenkins (torn meniscus) was having trouble planting on his knee and didn’t look comfortable running during minicamp, according to Ponder. Back in May, Jenkins insisted that the knee was at 100 percent. Ponder’s comments suggest otherwise. Already lacking separation ability, Jenkins can’t afford to have a hitch in his giddyup. Due $2.5 million at age 30, he’s no lock to stick on the Vikings’ final roster.

Ponder today as he appeared in Hugo for the team’s 18th Annual Ride for Life Motorcycle Rally, which benefits the Vikings Children’s Fund. Part of the content of the interview will be included in our training camp preview coverage next week, but here are a few nuggets from that talk, centered around his receiving core.

*As for Percy Harvin…Ponder says he and the dynamic playmaker have texted back and forth and that Harvin is preparing for camp, which kicks off in earnest Friday. “I never brought up his situation, but he’s ready to go,” Ponder said. “He’s doing fine.” Last month, Harvin expressed unhappiness with the Vikings in vague terms, requested a trade, missed a full minicamp practice and then returned for the final workout but declined comment on the matter.

The core of Harvin’s issues are still unclear, at least publicly. General manager Rick Spielman has said in the past he would keep in contact with Harvin’s agent, Joel Segal, during the summer. From what I’m told, the Vikings are expecting Harvin to play under his rookie contract — which pays $915,000 in salary this year, according to the NFLPA web site — and not under an extension.

*Ponder considers wide receiver a “strongpoint” in the offense because of the new additions — not just Jerome Simpson. Fourth-round rookie Jarius Wright “really turned it on” at the end of minicamp, said Ponder, who is also excited about fourth-rounder Greg Childs but didn’t get to see much of him because of a calf strain. Ponder made a point to praise Stephen Burton’s progress. “He’s really impressing,” Ponder said. “His route-running looks a lot better, and he’s catching the ball really well. His hands got better.”

*Veteran receiver Michael Jenkins could be feeling lingering effects from that November meniscus tear. Ponder said Jenkins was catching the ball well in minicamp but was having trouble planting on the knee and didn’t look comfortable running on it. “As soon as his knee gets better he’ll be a lot better,” Ponder said. Certainly something to monitor in Mankato. Jenkins had told me in May that the knee was feeling good.

    Nice article on Berry Spencer…

There are 3 head coaches that I wonder if they have what it takes to “control” some of their players off the field antics ??..

Schwartz and the Lions…Harbaugh and the 49ers…And last but not least…Frazier and the Vikings…

One reason I give Les a better shot at it…Is Frazier can control his own emotions well…And Spielman finally is in the correct position at GM to help get things done with flare ups off the field issues now also…

Schwartz and Harbaugh are hot heads…And can see both teams taking a step back this season…

While other sports writers seem to think both teams will do very well this season…I believe lack of discipline from their head coaches will be their doom…Only time will tell on that prediction as the season progresses…

However his obsession with a good running back (Herschel Walker) cost the Vikings for many years.

It just goes to show you that it is the LINE that makes the running back, and not the other way around. Even the higher ups can be stupid about this simple football truth.

The Vikings helped themselves by getting Kalil and possibly some others for the O Line this year.

One reason they will be 8-8 is that it will take another year or two to get the other O Linemen.

The question is is did Spielman learn from his mistakes?

We appear to need a Linebacker or two as well.

Questions remain at CB, S, WR, Qb, DL, etc., although it’s possible that we may have solved those problems this off-season.

    You never can tell!

Spencer…I think it will be Fusco…But what a treat it is to have players like Schwatrz,Love, and Berger sitting on the bench in case an O-lineman gets injured…

This O-line the Vikings have set up for this season..I think will be awesome !!…And with very good depth at back up positions…

This year a glaring weakness for the Vikings for years…Turns into a huge strength…

I can’t wait to see some of the holes this aggressive line can rip open for AP and Gerhart !!!…

  215. By OTKalil2012 on Jul 22, 2012 | Reply

The kicking game never thrilled this fan…

Oh sure…There is the occasional “game winning field goal”…

But I am looking for touch backs…

Kneel down before the Viking hoard !!!…

And start from your own 20 yd line…

DeerTracks you’re apart of the problem

  236. By Frederick Jones on Jul 22, 2012 | Reply

    @OTKalil,

What do you base your optimism on? Kalil and Schwartz have proved themselves somewhat, but never on a consistent basis on the NFL level. Johnny Sullivan may be the best OL we have besides Kalil.

Sullivan is probably 6’2″ 265′ which is way to small for the NFL.

What yards our backs make will be mostly on their own.

    Yet 8-8 is possible because it’s a p a s s i n g league.

  237. By Frederick Jones on Jul 22, 2012 | Reply

    @Titus, and BSAS

You are probably doing your best, but there are problems with this blog.

I don’t know who is who on this blog any more. Too many impersonators and name changers.

Perhaps when the games start, bloggers will concentrate on football and not on nastiness towards each other.

  238. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Jul 22, 2012 | Reply

I just had a thought but probably I am wrong– maybe the renegade bloggers are behind these impersonations– to get the rest of the core bloggers to go to the other site– because I am real close to leaving here for good. Spencer, I apologize for impersonating you a month or so ago (I told you right away) because I can now see why you said– outta here. I am outta here. Fred Jones– half the posts are not me.
