Vikings VP Lester Bagley Earns Public Policy Award
Posted by on July 10, 2012 – 9:00 amThis past spring, Vikings Vice President of Public Affairs and Stadium Development Lester Bagley led the organization to its biggest off-the-field victory when he helped secure financing for a new publicly-owned and operated stadium for the State of Minnesota and the Vikings. Tonight he will be appropriately honored for his 10-plus years of dedication and leadership on the issue.
As part of the Leaders in Public Policy 2012 program at the Saint Paul Hotel, Bagley will be given the “Public Policy Achievement (Sports)” award. Named annually by Politics in Minnesota and the St. Paul Legal Ledger Capitol Report, the public policy awards “recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions toward Minnesota’s political, public policy or civic environment during the state’s current fiscal year or legislative session.” Bagley will be honored alongside Governor Mark Dayton, as well as stadium bill authors Senator Julie Rosen and Representative Morrie Lanning.
“Lester’s unwavering passion and commitment to the stadium effort make him very deserving of this award,” said Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf. “Because of his dedication, Minnesota will have a multi-purpose facility that will be a first-class destination in the Midwest and will leave a lasting legacy on the State. The Vikings organization is proud of Lester and his tremendous accomplishment for the State of Minnesota, the Vikings and our fans.”
Despite an extremely difficult political environment and economy, Bagley oversaw the public discussion and advocacy effort surrounding a new stadium on behalf of the Vikings. With his guidance, a coalition of elected officials, Vikings fans and business, labor and community leaders organized to advance the stadium issue at the Minnesota Capitol, and on May 10, 2012, the efforts culminated with the House and Senate passing legislation to construct a $975 million multi-purpose stadium in Minneapolis. Just days later on May 14, Governor Mark Dayton signed the bill into law.
“Without Lester Bagley, there would have been no stadium bill passed in the last legislative session,” said Governor Dayton.
“This legislation would not have passed without Lester’s leadership and perseverance,” said Senator Rosen, who authored the Senate version of the stadium bill. “It was an honor to work with Lester and his team.”
With the stadium bill behind him, Bagley has turned his attention to the design and construction of the new facility. Over the next four years, the Vikings will work closely with the newly-created five-member Stadium Authority to ensure that a world-class facility is constructed for the State, the team and Vikings fans. Groundbreaking is expected in spring 2013, followed by nearly three years of construction, with the stadium opening in 2016.

Great for LB. I’m glad for the part he played in preserving Vikings football in Minnesota. The only thing I would change about the stadium plan, is to remove the roof completely. Since the stadium has passed, but is still in an infant phase, the possibility, as minimal as is, might still be a reality. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, but I’m sure the original plan will prevail.

Wobby your such a suck up. Oh good award. Nobody Cares! AP went to jail this weekend and not so much as a peep about it on the VIKINGS website. I know this is a pro vikings site, but news is news. You don’t have to say anything negative but why not at least report it happend. By not saying anything you are shutting down all the people who could be potential vikings fans from coming to the web site when they search for what happend over the weekend.

4 years? seems like a long time, couldn’t they do it in 2?
By Wobswilldropyoulikeyouhot on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
Fool.
There is no possibility of the stadium not having a roof. There is too much value of its use for other functions that would require a roof. Ex. Final Four’s Concerts and even Super Bowl. There is no chance we host a super bowl in an outdoor staduim. Its kinda cold here around super bowl time.
By Wobswilldropyoulikeyouhot on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
Richard.
The reason it will take four years as opposed to two is the fact that they don’t even have a generic plan for the stadium yet. It still has to be designed, and then the contractors have to take the design and make it possible. In all actuallity the actual construction should only take two years
By Vikingsfool on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
Oh I know, the plan has been for a fixed roof, the Wilfs may poney up the change for a retractable roof. The likelihood of removing the roof alltogether is slim to nil. I’m just saying I have my fingers crossed that since the bill has passed, but design is in the mix, that the roof could still be removed. A lot of tailoring happens to many bills after being passed. The possibility, slim as it is, is still there. I’ll be dissapointed, but still keep my fingers crossed.
btw, I’d trade a Super Bowl at the stadium for some cold weather open air football anyday.

Fool – Right now the possibility isn’t slim to nil, it’s just straight out non-existant. Part of the negotiating that contributed to it taking so long for the state to agree to pay for a stadium was about the roof. The bill said that the stadium HAS to be built with a roof, and that any retractable structure needs to be paid for by Ziggy if he chooses.
So the ONLY chance of having no roof is to abandon this bill altogether, go through the legislative process again (a 10+ year trip based on earlier accounts) and get a new stadium plan approved without a roof…or Ziggy just building the stadium without any money from the state.

Carl k – 4.52 40? Sounds average for any WR. Much lower than the 4.30 that was being reported a couple days ago.
That report obviously embellished a bit, cause it said he was 6’4″ too, but apparantly he barely broke over the 6’3″ mark on his pro day. We don’t need him. By the time the season starts, he’ll have shrunk so much that he’d have trouble making it at CB.

Ahh, its always refreshing to hear new-founding believers.
Bless you, Vikingsfool.
By Vikingsfool on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
I’m definatly a believer in the fact that Cook can get it done when he is on the field. Yet, only 12 games out of 20, on the field. That stat worries me some. Yet, the factor that comes into play is this. His rookie season it was due to injury (sucks, but it happens). Last year it was the arrest. I think he will need to stay healthy and on the field for an entire season for most fans to get behind him 100%. Like I said, if he does so, he will be the guy.
By Wobswilldropyoulikeyouhot on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
I think people are getting a little to excited about Cook. I mean C’mon guys is Cook. Wasn’t that great in college thats why we drafted him out of the first round. And he really hasn’t preformed when he has been on the field for the Viks. Please explain what I am missing. I think alot of the excitment around him is the fact that he is not horrible. We are just thrilled to have a CB that isn’t going to get burnt by the lower end wide outs in the league. Heck I even think he can play with the good wide outs, but by no means is he an elite CB. We as an organization didn’t even think that when we drafted him. He is a second string CB.
By Vikingsfool on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
I’m not 100% on cook, but he played well during his short stint last season. Like I said, IF he can stay on the field, he MAY be the guy.
By Wobswilldropyoulikeyouhot on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
Think about it when cook’s playing days are over and he retires. Will his career be better than what antione winfields has. I dont think so and winfield has never been one of the top 5 CB in the league. Sure he is great and plays hard but he isn’t even elite and he is twice the player cook is.
By Vikingsfool on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
How can we know, we’ve barely seen Cook on the field. No one is saying he will be elite, but should be good enough to be a #1 CB, if he can stay on the field. As far as Winny, he has been so underrated his whole career.
By Wobswilldropyoulikeyouhot on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply
Better breakdown for those who don’t know much about winfield. Chris cook would be the fourth string CB on the Cowboys. He wouldn’t even get on the field because he doesnt even have special teams capabilities. I feel like im bashing a guy that I think should be on a NFL roster, but call it what it is. If it walks like a duck….

Name another team that he would be the outright starter on. He could be the number two guy on a few teams but com’on. I am optomistic about this season but I don’t want everyone getting behind players that will more than likely be replaced in the next few years. I hope he comes out and turns into a “prime time clone”(maybe keep some tackeling skills though) But the fact is we never as an organization planned on this guy being our number one shut down corner and now we are acting like he is the savior to our secondary. Lets not put unreal expectations on the guy. I want to keep him around but I want someone with elite potential to be our number one corner. And please no one start with we need the honey badger comments he will get tourch in the league. No size to shut down megatron.(which is one thing cook almost did for a play or two)

So the average against cook is 2 catches. Please take into acount the the average yards he gave up per catch is 23. The average in the NFL for last year was 14. And thats not counting how many TD’s he gave up. Although I will give him credit holding Johnson to 3 catches and on TD is pretty good. But the Vincent Jackson stats dont really count. He wasn’t in game shape when we played him.

What are you talking about? Cook allowed 15 completions in 25 targets (60.0%) for 187 yards.
So that equates to 12.4 yards per catch. And he only gave up ONE TD last year.!
Cook is legit!!

The new stadium will belong to the state of Minneasota. So there will be a roof for multiuse purposes. Lucas Oil Field has only had their roof open very few times and only when the temperatures were in that median area. This way it keeps the cost of reheating and cooling down. I am thinking with the location of the Vikings Stadium even the retractable roof idea will be nixed.

By Vikingsfool on Jul 11, 2012 | Reply
The Wilfs say that they want some retractable feature. What do you suppose they mean by retractable feature? I’m guessing that if they do end up with a retractable roof, it is some sort of ground breaking design which no other stadium has. Maybe it will be some sort of a roll-away cover for the stadium. That’d be cool, you could have an outdoor venue for games, but a covered stadium for any other event. I doubt it’d be possible, but then again, I’m no stadium engineer, so who knows.
By Vikingsfool on Jul 11, 2012 | Reply
I also came across the NFL rules for having a retractable roof. It was suprising to find, that the only rules regarding opening or closing the roof, is that once it has been opened, it cannot be closed during the game, and vice-versa. No rules on temperature or weather conditions litigating the roof status. So technically, if I’m correct, if Ziggy wants to open the roof on a 20 degree afternoon, he could. The heating costs would be large, but we also know that Ziggy is not afraid to spend money.
By Mike B. on Jul 11, 2012 | Reply
Check the stats on the Lucas Oil Field in Indy it tells you exactly how many times it’s been open and that’s not many. Remember the Stadium authority decides on stadium issues not the Wilfs.

Despite these constraints, the roof on the stadium—which opened in 2008—has been retracted for 21 Colts home games. Texas Stadium, the $1.1 billion home of the Dallas Cowboys that opened in 2009, has opened its roof for two games. That’s just over half of the home games at Indy which is a lot warmer than Minny.

I mean really you guys are talking over there about practice squad guys starting by week three. There is a reason they are on practice squads. Please name more than 5 players in league history that have become consistent starters after spending more than one year on a practice squad, let alone talented enough to make us more than a 5 win team

Not to mention, some of the bloggers, I won’t mention names, but mr bathsalt guy, and others, only want to argue. I’d blog there once and a while, but HCG won’t let me. So basically, It’s not a freedom site, it’s an exclusive little blog club who will only let bloggers join if they agree with you.

How about a Plexiglas roof with fans to blow the cold air down on the field while the game is being played?
By DRS on Jul 11, 2012 | Reply
There could be a Plexiglas shield on the upper level seating area to protect them who do not like the cold air and seat warmers for the seats closes to the field. Off course this would require an A-frame type roof to accomplish properly.

Why can we just get some sort of update on somthing. Its like Wobs has lost all his since of direction with this site. Is it primarily a blog site? Is it an Informative site? Its definatly not a fan site! Wobs is doing to much stuff in front of the camera. We don’t buy season tickets to watch Wobs. We buy them to watch the action on the field. No more pick 6 with your mug on the screen get some interviews on here, some player updates, Matt Khalil contract situation? I frequently visit the eagles web site because it has been voted best nfl website a few times in the past and it has a clear direction. Why do I visit the site not being an eagles fan? Its becasue when they don’t have anything going on with the team they frequently have blogs open about other NFL related topics. O yeah and there is no post limit!

Great article: Not found on this site. But NFL>COM but still pretty cool I say lets freeze ourselfs to death. Making to another super bowl would keep me warm for years
There’s at least a few of you who want to see the Minnesota Vikings play their games outdoors again, in the grim winter weather of the north.
That’s unlikely, but will you settle for a partially retractable roof?
Lester Bagley, the team’s point man for the new stadium, hinted that could be in the works.
“It’s a fixed-roof facility, but if we can cut costs, manage costs, our goal is to have a retractable feature (such as a portion of the roof that can be opened to view downtown),” Bagleythe St. Paul Pioneer Press. “Some retractable feature, we think, is important. That’s the one thing we’re working on.”
There’s nothing here to suggest the team would allow Mother Nature into the mix late in the season. Too bad. When the Vikings waged war outdoors at old Metropolitan Stadium from 1961 to 1981, they froze opponents on their way to four Super Bowl appearances. Since taking their game inside, Minnesota’s been to none. Just saying.
By Mike B. on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply
I think it will depend on if the Wilfs feel a pro soccer team will be profitable in Minneapolis. It the numbers don’t work out there will be no retractable roof. It is a major expense for a stadium considering drainage, heating, and cooling costs. Even if it is added to the building, I think the chances of seeing a game in adverse weather or even below 40 degrees as remote.

Supplemantal Draft underway!
“flash gordon” and about three others might draw a few bids. gordon had a solid pro-day with the vikings scouts attending tuesday
By sandiamond on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply
Eligible players
Quaylon Ewing-Burton, CB, Boise State
Josh Gordon, WR, Utah/Baylor
Adam Harris, RB, Syracuse
Adrian Haughton, OT, Iowa State
Larry Lumpkin, LB, Carson-Newman
Montez Robinson, DE, Georgia
Houston Tuminello, WR, McMurray/Louisiana Tech
Ed Wesley, RB, TCU
Each team’s position will be weighted by assigning the weakest team the greatest number of lottery chances and the strongest team the fewest number. Team strength and weakness will be determined by the order of the first round of the previous April’s draft, exclusive of any trades.
• Once these values are assigned, teams are split into three groups: 1) Teams that won six or fewer games in the previous regular season; 2) Remaining non-playoff teams; 3) The 12 playoff participants.
• A lottery is performed within each group to produce the order of that group’s teams, with the overall order progressing from Group 1 to Group 2 to Group 3.
If a team is successful in its bid, that team forfeits its draft pick in the April draft for the round in which it bid.

Through the 10-20 articles that I have read on Bleacher Report, I have surmised that there are a few diamonds in the rough, but most of the articles are completely lack any journalistic value.
By KoN on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply
Was just browsing through Bleacher Report (curse you Spencer) and I found a piece grading every team’s offseason up to this point. I read through the first ten teams and thought that each one seemed fair and relatively accurate (other than Denver with an A purely for acquiring Peyton; sure that was a big time signing, but it is not deserving of and A grade all by itself). Then I saw this,
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1249712-offseason-grades-for-every-nfl-team-pre-training-camp-edition#/articles/1249712-offseason-grades-for-every-nfl-team-pre-training-camp-edition/page/19 . Why does it seem as though nearly every journalist who is not a Vikings/MN-specific journalist discredits them? The Vikings had one of the best drafts this year and made a few key FA signings taking young, underrated players to fill needs that they may have had trouble filling in the draft.

NOT BAD!! Good shot at impersonating me in the post JUST above this one, but I don’t generally repeat what I recently wrote– but then again, that was your only chance to actually fool someone– by copying my words almost verbatim. Who is this clown? DeerTracks? Fool? Does it matter? Gang, this is the one and only Titus right here- not the one above– oh, and DeerTracks, try to get the BAROO all the way past the edge of the site.
I know you want to be like me, but there is only one Titus. I have a huge day in front of me and a lot of writing is involved, so I will not be on here the rest of today. So, DeerTracks, knowing how much you admire me, go for it. Post away under my username!

The only sure way to grab his attention is to completely boycott for more than one post– more like a week. Then he will notice. – I am telling you, WOBS will not notice if it is one day or one blog. He will just slap a new one on and continue– some blogs have historically been low. WE must do it for an extended time period. I called for a week a month ago– I think that will get us noticed— plus there will be some who keep blogging– by going a week, most of the few who remain will get bored with so little activity– and by the end of a week or 10 days, Woobs will look and see no blogging
By parodymmxii on Jul 14, 2012 | Reply
And that’s just what he wants. Fewer bloggers will inevitably mean fewer complaints.
Let’s think about this logically. His team puts up a post limit, that makes it harder to get the sporadic blogs to make it to 1000+ comments. Oviously, this lead to a huge influx of complaints early on, which he dealt with using a form letter essentially saying “I don’t know jack squat about it.” But eventually people gave up trying to ask him to correct it and in some cases have even given up on commenting on the website altogether.
Things don’t appear to be getting any better, so it’s a safe assumption that the people in power want us to be blogging less. With that in mind, what good is it going to do to start to boycott the blog? It just shows them that their strategy is working even better than they hoped it would!
I think that Deertracks and Vikingfool (among others) have a much better idea. Instead of talking about relevant Vikings related things, they’re just spouting their heads off acting like stupid kids who got sent to bed early, and impersonating everyone. In short, they’re creating anarchy and chaos.
That’s what’s going to get noticed. The moderators want less traffic any way they can get it, so it’s better to show the powers that be that it won’t happen if you force it on us. Don’t be the sheep! Turn into childish morons like Deertracks and Vikingfool and get noticed! It may not work, but neither will a boycott, and at least this has a chance of opening some eyes.
By KoN on Jul 14, 2012 | Reply
I don’t buy it Parody, your explanation is convincing, but you overlooked one major part. Why would they ever want to have less traffic on the site, that just doesn’t make sense.
By parodymmxii on Jul 14, 2012 | Reply
Maybe they want to limit how much online storage is required to keep the blogs running.
Maybe they have someone who is required to read every blog and make reports on the actions within their site.
These are just two possibilities. We already know that they created some form of post limit. This was not done by accident, regardless of the stories they are giving us. If it were, they would have done something to fix the issue by now.
By sandiamond on Jul 14, 2012 | Reply
This might drag out into the beginning 1/3 of the season. More wins equals more fans browsing on the site. R. Cardinal or whoever will just implement more filters. They can always get wobs some help writing blogs. Detroit’s site is refreshing with two different writers plus they have the writer’s tweets updating right beside the blog on their site

I hate to agree with deerdroppings, but he makes a point. There is little relevant conversation on a Vikings blog. And I resent being put in the same category as this clown. I generally defend those that deerdroppings is ranting over. But Parody does make a good point, the post limit has limited some of our nonsense, and eliminated some of the more nonsense type posters. The rules are not going to change.
By That's Mr. Vikingsfool to you cheeseholes on Jul 14, 2012 | Reply
I’m sure the post limits are in place for one reason alone. If we are only allowed around 10 posts a day, we are less likely to post something that is not related to the topic at hand. If you pay attention, you can see that vikings.com is full of un-related posts where we point fingers and act like whiner football fans. Parody, it ain’t nothin’ to do with rules. And I don’t care about the afterlife– my relationship with C h r i s t is way too relevant to my current existence. Actually, if we were to have an actual one on one discourse, I could show you there are reams of evidence supporting C h r i s t. There is a book by a former attorney who was also an atheist– never read it, but I know it convinced a lot of people to come to faith– nah, never mind, I am not going to tell you what to read. Like I said, I am not pushy — I hate when C h r i s t ians do that– its like, did they forget human nature? No one likes that approach. See you guys in a week. (P. S. — Parody, I am not weak intellectually, but I am convinced)

I did not blog for 1 week the last time we tried a bloggers boycott, to many still blogged, did no good, the tyrants still put us in our timeouts, so I just figure to blog in short little blogs, unless I have a great interest in the issue, and at the same time to stay off topic when possible just to get back at the powers to be.

STOP. JUST STOP adding to the postings. Others are still doing it– blah, blah, blah…. SNAP OUT OF IT! You are better than this, Fred. We cannot ensure 100% compliance– no one can. But we can each ensure we ourselves are 100% in it— so people break the law every day, are you joining them? Your postings and rationale lack depth— please, Fred stop for a week. Dear, Minnesota Vikings Staff
Recently I happened to stumble upon the Vikings 2012 Roster on this website and there seems to be a little error- Bobby Felder, the un-drafted rookie, is listed as being 6’1. That is grossly incorrect, he actually measured in at 5’10 3/4 during his Pro Day at Nicholls State. So I would deeply appreciate it if your staff corrects this minor hiccup promptly. Look forward to hearing back from you.
Thank You

The content post limit is being addressed. New Blogs will be very light until the week before training camp begins since staff is currently in their offseason. Future site options being considerd are chat options that will allow people who want to banter to and fro to do so endlessly. The current purpose for the blog site is for people do discuss the topic of football or whatever the original blog post contains.
We will also be moving foward on the Video and Audio post. These seem to be very fan friedly.
As I can not speak for the entire Vikings organization, but I can speak from the site personel, your frustrations are felt and we are trying to resolve them as quickly as possible.
Be sue and check out this weeks Monday morning mailbag and don’t forget to submit your question for the pick 6 which should be posted later this weeks.

Posting a comment some 400 postings into a blog does not adequately alert your followers as to the problem. Seriously, I appreciate the answer, but why it took so long and the fact you knew this was going on, but failed to be forthright with the bloggers who emailed you is troubling.
