Submit Your Pick 6 Questions

Posted by Mike Wobschall on June 27, 2012 – 7:43 am

We’ve entered the only abyss of the NFL offseason, but that doesn’t mean business stops here at vikings.com. We keep going, which means another installment of Pick 6 is on the way this week. But we still need a few questions, which means we need your help.

You can submit a question by emailing me (wobschallm@vikings.nfl.net) or leaving the question in the comments section below this entry. You can also submit a question to me on Twitter (@wobby). Remember to list your name and town with all questions.

If you haven’t yet done so, check out previous installments of Pick 6. Last week’s edition discussed if the Vikings should take it slow with Adrian Peterson early in the season, improvements on defense, new kicker Blair Walsh and more.

    Wobs,

With all the new talent that we currently have in our receiving corps, i have not heard all lot about the veterans that are on the team, with the exception of Harvin. How did Aromashodu and Jenkins look through this years off-season program? Do you think any of the new talent could make a starting position this year?

My thoughts on this is your RE recorded 22 sacks, LE recorded 8, with the offensive scheme being to double team the RE and you really can’t dbl up on both ends, Why ain’t he getting more sacks? With the pressure coming in from the RE, you would think the LE could do much better. you would think. :D

Are there plans to fix the blog before Sept 9, so there can be fluid discussion during games? Otherwise, seriously, you will lose all your bloggers. Now, most don’t care too much that their posts are limited to about 7. But come game time, that will be totally unacceptable. Mark my words, Wobbs, if you don’t come out and be straightforward on this issue, the blog will be a ghost town.

First off Mike you do a great job by keeping us posted. My question is i think our secondary will be better this year with our additions and especially if Chris Cook can live up to what we expect from him. I like our line backing crew now this were my question lies if Jasper Brinkley gets the inside linebacker spot what about Everest Griffin to me he’s a better solution then Brian Robinson. With the year Jared Allen had Robinson should of easily had double digit sacks. I think if Griffin would of been on the other side of Jared Allen he would of easily had double digit sack. What do you think

Titus – I know he made that mistake multiple times, but it was far from the only one he made. I think that you should either correct every single mistake, or ignore it all. Since the former option would require the attention of a full time job, I choose to just ignore it all – as much as I can.

Anyways, people don’t like to be corrected. From my experience, they appear to be much happier being stupid and thinking that it doesn’t bother anybody, and they will defend that belief regardless of how many people speak up against it.

What else could a fan ask for?

  34. By parodymmxii on Jun 27, 2012 | Reply

Allday28 – I think they’re giving Griffen a chance at the MLB spot, so with his athleticism, Brinkley’s previous success at the position, and the accolades that newcommer Elimian has been given, the team probably feels like they can get someone to work in the middle.

I think that Aromashodu is the team’s first choice to take on the #1 WR spot until Jerome can play, but I wouldn’t rule out Jenkins or even Childs. Jenkins doesn’t have the desired speed, but he has enough experience that he should be a major contributor in the first few games. Childs doesn’t have the experience, but has enough physical skills that he could do a lot for the team if he’s able to learn his duties quickly.

Titus – THIS FAN would ask for 10 other guys playing with each of them. THIS FAN would also ask for our #1 pick from 2011 to play a more major role than the #6 pick from 2010.

4.Wright- coming in on certain packages and also working Harvins role when he is on the sidelines
5&6- between Jenkins/Burton/Aromashadizzle – pick your poison here( i would also put Walters here. Watch his highlight tape from Cornell. Impressive!)

If I am EJ… I would keep my asking price high right now. Why would EJ want to play for pennys or be a backup? EJ hasn’t retired or signed with another team. EJ has handled this with class.

If Brinkley or no one else steps up in camp… EJ knows he is a good security blanket for the Vikings.
EJ can step in at the last minute and still play at a high enough level to lead this team in tackles.
EJ and the Vikings are in no hurry right now to work a deal.

When it comes to J Webb…The Vikings would be smart to showcase the young mans “big play” ability in the preseason games…And then look to trade him…

And I am not talking about making Webb look stupid with the little “running and dump pass” stuff they have done in the past in the “blazer packages”..

I am talking about getting Webb in there to throw the ball down the field…Enough of the running plays all teams expect when Webb comes in…

Then after Webb makes a few big plays and looks GREAT as a back up…Sit him on the bench for trade bait or a draft pick…

Vikings have 3 QB’s on the team right now…Not one of which is a developmental “young” QB…Sage is a good second QB…Ponder is the starter…And will be the starter unless hurt…Where does that leave Webb ??…

Get Webb looking great…Or as good as possible…Then set him down…And trade him for a good draft pick when the opportunity comes around…And it will…Maybe the Eagles or Seahags…But some team will be drooling at adding Webb…If their starting QB goes down…Or maybe a solid back up QB for an injury prone player like M Vick..

Ponder will be the man this season…I still expect some mistakes out of Ponder…But by the end of the season…I think there will be very few fans asking who will be the starting QB in 2013…Ponder is the Vikings future…

Lets just hope the Vikings can stay away from the injury bug as much as possible this season…I like this young team…

  58. By megakrab on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

I think a trade that would make sense, saying we do trade Webb, would be to the Jags. I’d like their 3rd pick for him maybe fourth.

  59. By megakrab on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

Just saying, they do have the worst starting QB in the NFL and Webb would compliment MJD for them. It would be a run fest with small dump offs and then random bombs when the D isnt ready for it.

  60. By megakrab on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

I’m going to say that their 4th is a little more realistic, but why not aim high.

  61. By carlk300 on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

    What?
If Webb looks great in preseason, why trade him for a late round pick? Crazy!
If Ponder doesn’t improve any this season,.. Do you know who he will be compared to? … yeah Colt McCoy.

    McCoy- 58.4%, 20TDS to 20INTS, 74.5 rate
    Ponder- 54.3%, 13 TDs 13 INTs, 70.1 rate.

Be careful what you wish for!!!!!!!!!

  62. By megakrab on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

I’m just saying that if a trade were to happen, I could see that as a possiblity. Are those Colt McCoy’s stats from this year? If they are keep in mind that ponder was thrown into a not so good situation on a not so good team already on a losing streak half way through the season and Colt has been in for around 3 years i believe. If Ponder doesn’t improve then I do agree, we should start looking for an alternate, but usually QBs get 3 years before they get the hook unless its just painful. I mean even Jamarcus Russel got a pretty legit shot and that was UGLY. lol In the end I think ponder will be a legit started QB, I’m saying he will fluctuate between top 10 and top 15 from year to year.

  63. By carlk300 on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

This is the NFL anything can happen.

1st round picks can turn into busts… franchise players can come out of the cracks. Tom Brandy, Victor Cruz, J Allen and many other players were written off way too early.

  65. By megakrab on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

This is true. I’m not arguing against you, I’m just stating that i believe that Ponder is our franchise QB and that’s also what the coaches believe. I also believe that Webb is a heck of an athlete and that he deserves to play somewhere, but I don’t think he will ever be a starter here… We can keep him as an able backup until his contract is up and he’ll go to the free agecy and be signed to another team that will use him or we can trade him while he still has plenty of tread and time to grow so teams will want him. He is very cheap right now in trade value and money so i could see teams wanting him if we did put him up for trade. Even though his athleticism is elite, his stats aren’t so elite. He’d either go to Jags for QB or a team like the Browns or some one who could really use some depth at WR.

  66. By carlk300 on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

That was Colt’s 2 year career stats.
Ponder needs to improve just to keep pace with McCoy.

  67. By Mike B. on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

Webb will probably never be a NFL starting QB. If Ponder isn’t able to cut it, Webb will come on and finish the year. At that point the Vikings Org will probably start looking for another No.1 QB. If they thought Webb had the ability to be a #1 QB, they would have never drafted Ponder. Maybe Webb can prove them wrong, but I ddubt it. Great Athlete doesn’t mean you are great at a position in the NFL, so is the saying Jack of all trades but master of none. Webb just may be that Jack.

The Jags have a lot of money invested in B Gabbert and Chad Henne as a backup. NO way will they give anything for Webb.

The Browns have a solid backup vet QB in S. Wallace,.. plus they drafted Branden Weeden and they have Colt McCoy who has looked better than Ponder.

I don’t think the Browns will be trading for Webb.

IT IS NOT A GOOD MARKET RIGHT NOW TO TRADE A BACKUP QB AND GET MUCH OF ANYTHING IN RETURN.

Stop the trade talk of Joe Webb, besides you would get nothing for him, he’s an unproven player!! Ponder is the starter for now, but not sold on him just yet, in his favor, our offensive line play last year nearly got him killed, another year like that and he won’t last!! However, he does need to have a big year this year, another season like last (3-13) and the Vikes will be cleaning house, looking for another franchise QB, in a division loaded with QB and WR talent!!
Joe Webb is our #2 and Sage Rosenfels is just insurance, #3!!

  73. By jackwagens on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

Joe Webb’s high school coach, his UAB coach, and his 2 NFL coaches have all came to the same conclussion that Webb has more team value at QB than at any other position. I can respect that. I can live with that.

I can also respect that Webb is a capable backup QB that can step in and help us win games in a fun and exciting way. I can also respect the fact that we might NEED him to step in and do his thing this year.

However, anything can happen in an imperfect world… and Frazier has allready shown his hand that he will bench Ponder when/if he struggles. I think Frazier has heathy confidence in Webb.

I respect Frazier for that! I am sure (benching Ponder if he struggles) is NOT what Speilman and the front office want to see.

If things go well for Frazier and the Vikings this year… Webb will probably not see much action.

I understand where you’re coming from Spence, but your thinking is a little skewed. You seem to be following the line of thought that the QB makes the team, whereas, in reality, the team has a much bigger hand in making the QB. The reason that the top two QBs never finish with fewer than five wins is that they play on great teams. On those teams it is because of the rest of the team that the QB is counted as one of the top 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. There are very good QBs in this league who are not recognized among the top fwe because of the teams that they play on. For example, a guy like Sam Bradford could develop into one of the best QBs in the league, but for the past two years, he has had nothing around him. He’s had a very poor recieving corps and a disappointing o-line. The only real weapon that he has had since he was drafted is Steven Jackson. How do you think Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees would perform if they were stuck on the 2011 Rams, Browns, Dolphins, etc.?

Hi Mike How about the vikings naming thier defense The Purple Penitentiary. with Jared Allen as the warden. They will lock up Rogers,Cutler and Stafford and throw away the key. Allen the warden says they check in but they don’t check out.

What in the Blue Blazes does Fred being wrong about TJ have to do with Webb?

iaVike, Good, hire me and the firsr thing I would is kick Speilmans big, bright red A$$ up between his shoulders.

Next is repace Sunny-Hair Ponder with Webb, and place Ponder as 3rd QB, Sage 2nd QB. Or trade Ponder for a bowl of Chilli. oops thre is that name again.

  97. By KoN on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

What exactly is your stance DeerTracks? Sometimes it seems like you just want there to be a fair competition between Webb and Ponder and that you would fully support Ponder if he could prove that he was the better QB. Other times it seems as if your stance is f*ck Ponder, get rid of him and put Webb in.

    @Kalil and Mike B,

Why all the hate against Joe Webb? It seems WAY OUT of proportion, as if you guys are members of the KKK!

  101. By iaVIKE on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

Fred – I think the only “hate” that you’re seeing on here is DeerTracks hate for Ponder. Everyone else that is for Ponder does not have a problem with Webb. I personally really like what he has the potential to bring to this team, whether the best roll for him on this team gets figured out or not is a mystery… He’s an amazing athlete with a ton of raw talent, no one is arguing that.

  102. By parodymmxii on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

Hate for Webb? Far from it. I just see that he is too good of an athelete to spend his career on the sidelines, and as it appears that he isn’t going to get a legit chance here, we should see if we can get a trade offer for him with another team.

  103. By Mike B. on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

I agree with iaVike Webb is a great Athlete, but there are reasons he isn’t starting as QB for this team. Which is very obvious since he has been backup now for 3 years. This has nothing to do with Hate. I resent your KKK reference and you are the only one that brings this up when someone disagrees with you. You need to reeval your sensitivity Fred. Your constand pulling the race card when someone disagrees with you is a true shame.

    @iaVike,

You might need to go back and read all the hate mail Joe Webb is getting. What really drives into my craw is that Joe hasn’t really had any kind of chance to play in the NFL.

  106. By DeerTracks on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

    KO(N

First, I don’t hate Ponder! My biggest Beef is the fact that when Joe Webb first arrived on board, Frazier was talking 1st QB, then after throwing Webb under the bus, they got Ponder..

Second, When ever your fair haired boy gets ito trouble, Frazier sends in Webb to try to clean up the mess!

    Mike B.
The main reason Webb isn’t starting QB is because he has never really been given the chance . i.e, real time pratice, reps on the field, playing time!

  107. By Frederick Jones on Jun 28, 2012 | Reply

    @Mike B., etc.

You might also look at the REASONS Joe has been unable to play. Mike B., this is only Joe’s 3rd year in the NFL, so he has only been a backup for TWO SEASONS!

The first year he was behind the legendary Brett Favre, who only sits out when he is hurt, and that is not often. The last year Joe had to sit behind our 1st round draft choice.

Joe Webb will get his opportunities, I hope they are in Minnesota!!!

    @Mike B.,

I have not posted anything that can be considered racist in anyway. But there is something called reverse racism and you have done that several times in here and it is just as wrong. You should be ashamed of yourself. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t mean that you can pull the race card as the person in question is of one ethnic group or another. If that was the case we would have nothing to discuss.

Ponder is the starter for our team. That is a fact. Why not cheer him on? I know some of you like Webb better than him, but from what we have seen from both of them up to this point there is not nearly enough definitive evidence to say one is better than the other. It can serve no purpose to deride Ponder and hail Webb, or do the opposite. How about we all just support whoever is the starter, because, in the end, the coaches have seen a lot more of both of these guys and are much better judges of talent.

I think the Charelston signing is an indication that we want to get Griffen more reps at LB.

We dropped a DT who wasn’t likely to make the team and signed a DE who will be a long shot to make the team, all while we have two certain starters at DE already, but only one surefire player at DT.

Mike with so many questions being asked of you why is it that you only answer so few? Another question is do you think it made sense that the Vikings would drop a DT and sign a DE ? When clearly an area of weakness was the DT play opposite Kevin Williams last season, I understand the DT cut wasn’t impressing anyone at camp but hey here an idea go out and sign another DT to replace the one they cut, rather than fill an area of strength and depth that the Vikings already have in the DE position, just say-in.

If Ponder is the starter and hopefully the future franchise qb. Then why aren’t the switching Joe Webb to a wideout yet. He’s one of the most gifted players in terms of being an athlete, and it only hurts both their progression. I say this because Webb is to gifted to be a bench warmer and deserves to be on the field, and it will help Ponder progress. He’d have a 6’4 220 pound wr. I’m not saying right away obviously he will need time to learn the position at this level at which they play in. And it can’t hurt since the best wr on the team wants a trade and is a SLOT wr and not large enough to be the no. 1 guy at the position. The time to switch him though would have to be now. Because Ponder doesn’t have a go to guy yet some may say he has Harvin but like I said he wants out. So does anybody agree with me on this ?

  157. By Frederick Jones on Jun 29, 2012 | Reply

    @Brian,

You missed a lot of our talk about this subject. Several people agree with you.

Some of us think he should remain at QB. I am one of those people.

    Here is why:

Let’s say that Ponder starts out badly, or gets injured. Who do we put at QB?
Certainly most would agree Webb is more of a threat than Sage Rosenfels! And even if that weren’t true we would now be down to only two experienced QBs.

Ideally the QB should be the best athlete on the team!!!

    Fred

One more tidbit…Put Webb in the Backfield as a temp RB, have Ponder toss the ball to Webb, Webb can then pick out a reciever and throw for a touchdown!

Why don’t the Vikings build an offensive line that can dominant so Adrian can do what he does best aren’t you supposed to build around your best player and giving him a great offensive line to run behind would help. Adrian should be able to run for 2,000 yards easy but with the offensive line we put together every year doesn’t help. What do you think?

How many quarterbacks (that have won super bowls) been the most athletic player on the team? NONE! Examples of some of the better players would be; Dieon Sanders, Lawrence Taylor, and Barry Sanders are the ones that stand out the most to me. Now some qbs that won the thing; Joe Montanna, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Eli Manning, Kurt Warner, Phil Simms, and this list just doesn’t stop with how many qbs that weren’t the most athletic normally get it done better! Plus you said in the basics that he is the best athlete on the team, and you want him to play backup. As what I call “insurance”.
