Spielman Says Vikings Have No Interest In Trading WR Harvin

Posted by Mike Wobschall on June 20, 2012 – 12:59 pm

Vikings GM Rick Spielman met with reporters on Wednesday to address questions regarding WR Percy Harvin’s comments from Tuesday that he’s not happy with the team.

“On everything that’s been reported,” Spielman said initially, “from our standpoint, the Minnesota Vikings, we have no interest at all in trading Percy Harvin. We drafted Percy Harvin here, he’s a key part of our organization and a key part of our football team. Any issues that are out there or are reported, we always handle those internally and will continue to handle those internally.”

Spielman preferred not to go into specifics regarding the nature of Harvin’s displeasure or the timeline of it. Spielman did say that he’s spoken with Harvin’s agent, and that Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier has spoken with Harvin.

“It’s part of the NFL,” Spielman said. “There’s always going to be some players where you have to deal with specific issues and you have to deal with them internally, get them resolved and move forward.”

So just what is the issue? What is Harvin upset about?? Is it just that he wants Cheerleaders who weren’t in the same homeroom as his mother???

  2. By iaVIKE on Jun 20, 2012 | Reply

Percy is the 63rd highest paid reciever in league, i understand him being upset about that, but if that’s not it then what is it? The offensive scheme? He’s coming off his best year as a pro. Maybe the playbook is mainly two TE sets and he feels he won’t be as involved? That should free him up for larger gains one would think. He was BY FAR Ponders favorite target last year, why would that change?

  3. By Rogerthevikefan on Jun 20, 2012 | Reply

No chance in He11 that Harvin will be traded. He is just airing greviances. It will all work out for the best and Harvin will be a Viking for many years.

Hopefully its he just wants to be more involved.

Fraizer should hold a meeting with Harvin and Harvin’s mom. She will solve all the problems.

Hey if he is not happy i don’t know why he will get paid big we all know that

he gets all the playing timein the world it will only get better now so if he would like a trade

management should look where to get more pieces we are getting close in a hurry

i love percy man but if this what he want’s to do then we need to get the bigest bang for the buck remember it’ all about more pieces and this will set the stage for the rest of the young players

Like every NFL player he wants that superbowl ring and maybe he thinks he won’t get that in Minnesota. Remember he’s a four-year wide receiver and this is a young vikings team in a re-building phase. Like you said he’s just come off his best year so it’s a mystery but hopefully Spielman will resolve the issue. With AP coming off the back of an injury and Simpson out until week 4 Harvin will be even more important. Jenkins and Aromashodu between them didn’t clock 1000 yeards receiving and there’s no guarantee any of the young WR’s will step up, especially in their rookie season.

That’s just the Vikes 1/2 of the story, whats Harvin got to say now? The Vikes should show some class and give him the money. Good as anybody in the leaque talent, has skills to do it all, the kind that don’t come around very often!

  12. By Jon on Jun 20, 2012 | Reply

He’s upset because we have the worst offensive scheme and playcalling in the league, with no signs of getting better. He doesn’t feel confident that this year will be any better given the adjustments (or lack thereof) the offensive coordinator has made this off season.

New offensive coordinator, or new scheme. One of these needs to happen before the team is competitive. Childress and Tice called the plays just as good as our offensive coordinator did last year. That’s not good.

  13. By secretbonus1 on Jun 20, 2012 | Reply

Who is the unnamed source that told the associated press that Harvin wanted a trade? Sounds like everyone you hear interviewed is so surprised to hear the news.

    It may have been
1)Randy Moss because he’s still mad at MN for making him the scapegoat for Brad Childress’s bad season staying bad and stays in touch with Harvin. Unlikely, but you never know.
2)Harvin himself, though I doubt it since he said he was going to handle the manner internally as well, and don’t think he would lie, but I think he would be shooting himself in the foot if he did that because any leak would hurt his trade value and likelihood of getting traded.
3)Harvin’s agent who wants the extra commission now and is trying to get him to get traded so he can re-sign.
4)Someone in the Vikings org…. possible, but not many knew anyways.
    5) a friend or family member of Harvin’s

Either way, someone talked that shouldn’t have and THAT should be just as big of a concern because it lowers the trade value. Maybe the Vikings should have Adrian Peterson leak a trade rumor to a few people to narrow down the suspects.

Percy Harvin, do you know how lucky you are to be making $2.5 million? And you want to be traded. There is a group home, Andrew Residence, of 212 people with mental illness who breathe, eat and sleep the MN professional sports teams. They would love to trade your life with theirs. Many of them were great scholars and diagnosed with schizophrenia at around 18. They lost their hopes, dreams and they some feel their whole lives. Most live in $72.18 a MONTH! Some have other health problems such as migraines, paralysis, blindness, and a host of other ailments. Yet they smile when I show up to volunteer. They thank me profusely when I take them to any sports venue and they get a soda or a hot dog; not both you understand, no money. When they get a migraine they are can’t have many of the medicines that you get. They can’t afford them. Yes, you were my favorite but I will not wear my new jersey with your name on it. I can’t print what I think of you right now. And, I’ve been a season ticket holder for 30 years, so really I pay a part of your salary. I am soooo disgusted!!!!

    1) Harvin said its about the team.. He was injured so participating on the side, not holding out.
    2) media asked him about why he looked upset and he said there are thing he needs to work out, but that it is about the team and he is here for the team at a volentary camp for the team.
    3) Harvin said he would handle things internally, but some unnamed source leaked the info…
    4) Harvin put up 1800 all purpose yards on limited kickoff return and only 58% of all offensive plays. Some of that was either because of injuries or concerns that he wouldn’t hold up over a full game, but to do that is impressive, and only Darren Sproles was capable of numbers like that on such a limited basis, and he had 500 more yards from kick and punt return.

He isn’t “whining”…. Almost anyone with a regular job who produces more than everyone else at their position who wants to put in more time for the sake of the company(team) who risks physical health injury and still gets paid less would ask for a raise, even if they love what they do.

Let’s not be too hasty here. Let management hear him out. If it is nonsense then fix the chemistry to build a long term winner. As a star performer a player deserves rewards for high performance, so if Percy is seeking reasonable compensation the team may decide to be equally reasonable. If the man simply wants out via a trade then purge the ship but make any takers pony up with draft choices, not just
    “A” draft choice!

If he’s one the same page with the coach, then we can probably rule out being unhappy with playcalling. I would think coach F would probably have Musgraves back. I’m thinking it has more to do with a losing record, not enough playing time, or QB play. If it’s QB play, then he needs to settle down and complain next year when we know for sure if we have a QB or not.

It’s not the money. Newer players at his position are getting more attention! Every time there are any reports on the issue, they say how well Simspon and Ponder are connecting with eachother right now, but I haven’t seen any mention of Harvin and Ponder getting to know eachother better.

All of Harvin’s buddies are flushed from the team, but we keep depending on him to be our all star receiver and to just smile and say “it’s a living” like the good little pterodactyl record player he is.

GreatIrishPotatoFamine: Of course people are going to defend a team mate and player we all love and express concern for a Vikings player. Yeah, it sucks that Harvin wants a trade, but not showing concern would be something that a Packer fan would do, not a Vikings fan. So of course we are going to defend him. As you said… Harvin is 24, he is a huge part of our rebuilding project. If he leaves its a massive blow to the offense… That’s why you defend doing what it takes to keep him happy. But he’s also been a good person (with a few astrisks), and a human being. Show some compassion for an excellent person and human being and football player and have some respect for the fact that he’s hurting about something, if you are truly a Vikings fan, and not just a fan on Sundays.

Also, If he’s a huge part of our rebuilding project, and he isn’t going to want to be here in 2 years anyways… Trading him may be a good idea for both sides so he leaves and we at least get some compensation for it, unlike Sidney Rice. Let’s just wait a year and revisit the situation then.

  79. By Jeffbleedspurple on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

I would be nice to know what his issue is, because its not money, its not Ponder/Simpson either, other than wanting more of a star role on the team which can be fixed, I think its more that Harvin literally is unhappy with the team and that’s not going to be fixed anytime to soon, specially this season. I hope this can be resolved and produce a happy Harvin, if not! just trade him and be done with it.

  80. By mike on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

I think when you do everything you’re asked and it’s still not good enough and you’re still not a winner you get a psychological sense that it was all for nothing. Even though that’s not true and being their putting out that effort matters to the teammates and the fans, football is an emotional game and it takes it’s toll. Particularly when you’re playing in the NFL achieving your dream and you’re still not happy. You get the sense of helplessness like there’s nothing you can do to make things better. I think Harvin just wants a change of environment, hoping that a new team will change the way he feels. In reality, being happy has nothing to do with money and only a little bit to do with environment and once you have everything you ever want materialistically and you’re not happy, you realize that. It’s just a matter of changing the information he takes in the music he listens to, the way he speaks to himself internally and the tone of his own voice making the thoughts he does and the pictures in his head that he makes and the attitude he puts forth. Sometimes a change in environment will spark a change in habit and attitude and that can lead to changes, but ultimately it’s all internal and that means that it never can be solved internally, the internal can only change as a symptom of changing expectations that come with something externally. So Harvin, listen to some Tony Robbins CDs, put on some happy music, and practice smiling a bit more and taking time to appreciate the sunrises and sunsets and life around you. As long as you are tuck in MN, you might as well do everything you can to make life more enjoyable. It’s not easy battling through that feeling for everyone… Particularly after his grandma died last year….

Harvin is a kind spirit, even though he’s competitive and has gotten hot headed in the past that’ s just a part of his will to win and it just comes with the territory… I’m glad we aren’t trading him as a fan of the Vikings, but as a fan of Harvin’s I hope everything works out.

Its good to see some more fans besides my self have a little compassion for Percy. We dont know all the details or the full story so it is important not to rush to judgement. He is out-performing his contract and should be paid. Anybody who knows football can see the passion and the tenacity in which he plays the game. He is a horse, and not a very big guy. While he is just 24, his body goes through alot with his physical style of play. He is going to age faster than most recievers and trying to get some extra cash before the shelf life runs out does not make him a terrible person, we would all do the same. I sincerely hope this works out for both sides and an agreement can be reached sooner rather than later.

  83. By GreatIrishPotatoFamine on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

If hes after money im all for it, he clearly deserves a bigger contract. But unfortunately that doesnt look like its the problem. Where were you guys when C. Griffin got cut? hes a human being too

  84. By mike on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

What I have to go out of my way to express compassion for every single individual on this planet on a blog somewhere for it to mean something? Or just every single Vikings player? The superstars we look up to are prone to the same emotional ups and downs and sometimes it hits tindividuals harder than they understand. Cedric Griffin isn’t unhappy, and he got cut and signed with someone else. Asher Allen chose to walk away early and so did Leinsausser. It’s not that I don’t have compassion for these players too, but people seem to be making a much bigger deal about the Harvin situation, so of course there are going to be more people speaking out and more people defending him.

It’s been a while since I’ve been on this site, but in all honesty, not a whole lot going on after the draft!! Couldn’t resist this one though, because just like most of you, I’m a huge Percy Harvin fan and when one of your superstars speaks out you better listen!! If not about money then he’s probably not happy with the offensive scheme for the upcoming season or he doesn’t like the surrounding cast that the Vikes have assembled, either way, sit the young man down and explain to him the importance of “team” and how he’s important to this “team”!! Other than AP and JA, Percy is the third best player on this team, sometimes these guys need to hear this, especially with the egos of today!!

  87. By mike on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

@solo… NFL team’s doesn’t honor the entirety of the contract if they cut a player or if the player gets injured and can’t play. But the contract legally allows for cutting the contract short, as well as the player’s recourse which is holding out. But he stated this isn’t about money already. Maybe it’s still about the contract and he feels it’s about “respect” or something, but I don’t think so. He’s gotta know he has all the respect and appreciation in the world from the coaches, players and fans.

I am appalled at some of you that call yourselves Vikings fans, the garbage posts I see about Harvin are “Ignorant” First off this guy is the MVP of the team besides AD can do it all!!!! As a previous poster said he had 1,800 all purpose yds last year & 7 TD’s including a 104 yd kick return plus he can play RB & the Wildcat! Also he has 5,800+ all purpose yds since he became a Viking which is 3rd in the NFL in that time!!!!! to go along with 24 TD’s and some of you want to trade him? Glad you’re not running the team!!!! He has played hurt and still gave it everything he had & this Migraines talk Blah, Blah, Blah, he got rid of those last year & didn’t have 1 some of you need to do your research before you post!!!! Vikings need to get him on the field any way possible!!!!!

I hope that things work out with Percy and he wants to play fo rthe Vikings this year. What I don’t want to have happen is to have a play give only his half best as he’s waiting for his contract to run out. If Percy requested a trade then that’s a very serious issue. The question is can Percy and Coach Frazier come to an agreement, so Percy feels happy enough to put 100 percent on the field every game. If they can then keep him if not trade him. This team is not short on undersized slot receivers even considering the talent that Percy has. It’s not hate it’s tough love.

keeping the fans guessing and call upon us for stadium issues you guys can take your games and shove it there way to many great charactors on this team to worry about such a cry baby the issue is sharing snaps with these talented rookies harvin you cry baby your not a team player your selfish sit on bench for a year and see how many teams are intrested in a used up 190 lb reciever

Hey Chednar– You can be the greatest athlete — but a cancer to a team. I can think of a lot of high profile players–I will refrain from mentioning names. It does not matter what Percy accomplished– the past is over. We need a future orientation for success— and we need team chemistry to win a Superbowl– that is the number one ingredient–

  97. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

My personal view on Percy is neutral at the moment– he is obviously one of our best players. How or why the current distraction and dissatisfaction as well as the leak he wants to be traded are still too unclear — unless I missed today’s news. So, everyone calm down and let Frazier handle it– we have an excellent player’s coach– it will work out.

From what I have read and heard Percy never has said anything about a “Trade” I heard him say he has two serious issues with the team and wants them fixed before minicamp. The media has and is blowing this out of control like tabloid reporters.

Percy will be remaining a Viking a long time to come.these issues will be resolved shortly. The issues he has are between him and his employer and as such will probably be kept in house, but put your minds to rest because its really not a big deal.

That is good to hear. Like I said, I hate him if he actually gets traded because he asked to leave our team, but if he sticks around, you gotta love him…

I guess Percy Harvin is staying. Some chick asked him on Twitter

“Does this mean you are staying in Minnesota?? The Vikings need you!‪”

    And he replied by saying..

    “of course.”

  105. By Frederick Jones on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

    @Johnny,

I agree with you, a lot of this stuff is blown all out of proportion because there is very little Vikings news to report this time of year.

  106. By parodymmxii on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

I’m starting to think (hope) that the practice of instant news via the internet has blown this way out of proportion. This is something that wouldn’t have even been news 10-years ago, but now that people have such easy access to the net and reporters are trying to make new news every second, a couple of words that somebody thought they heard can get blown into the next watergate.

So where is everybody that casted Percy aside and wanted him gone? Where is that old lady that was on here saying she had a Harvin jersey but wouldnt wear it now? Kinda sad…we have some frontrunners and “sunday exclusive” fans on this blog. I thought that kind of stuff only happened with Packer fans…

What’s going on around here titus?

  110. By Rudso on Jun 21, 2012 | Reply

New Vike, you can’t blame fans for losing their cool because we all believed the reports were true. I was VERY skeptical on these reports because Percy is not the type of person to pull something like this. But don’t expect true fans to take news that one of our youngest and most explosive weapons wants out of the Purple and Gold.

It’s one thing to hold out for more money which if that was the case most fans would be upset with the Vikings than with Percy because his already under paid considering what he does for us. But I would be more surprised if a true Viking fan DIDN”T get upset at Percy for requesting a trade (which wasn’t true).

I think that Titus knows as much as the rest of us.

Which is nothing.. So far everyyone is guessing, hoping, throwing rocks or flowers at Harvin, saying good things, saying bad things, poking each other with their verisons of what is best for the Vikings to solve this great Tempest in a Teapot”

I like the way the new Vikes organization (the post-Childress and post-triangle of authority organization) are handling things. Maybe this got blown way out of proportion, but the team seems to have solved a situation (at least for the time being) which could have turned into something like what the Jags have with MJD or what the Bears have with Forte. They’ve also dealt with Everson Griffen and got rid of worthless players such as McKinnie, Berrian, and McNabb. It remains to be seen whether Cook’s problems are over, but from everything I’ve heard, he seems like a changed person.

Just got one thing to say.

All this talk about a player “playing halfway” is bologna! That’s career suicide.

    Let me get this straight….

A player wants more money or has some other issue with team. Said player isn’t traded and doesn’t get a new contract. Said player then purposely has a bad year or is in an other way destructive to the team.

And that said player is supposed to get a better contract from another team or even be wanted by another team?

    Give me a break!

No team is going to pay a guy big money after not giving his all on the field. Heck, most teams won’t even be interested in a player like that.

Harvin’s good, don’t get me wrong, but he ain’t TO (when TO was in his hay day) good and that’s the kind of talent a guy would have to have in order to survive a purposeful down year or being a nuisance in the locker room.

    Now that’s enough about that.

Anyway, glad to know it was a media driven story.

    Go Harvin and SKOL VIKES!
