Emptying Out The Notebook For OTAs 4-6

Posted by Mike Wobschall on June 7, 2012 – 2:11 pm

Another productive and successful week of Organized Team Activities is in the books, as the Vikings conducted OTA #6 on Thursday at Winter Park. The Vikings are now 60% of the way through their OTA schedule and have completed seven weeks of their nine-week offseason program.

A lot happened this week during OTAs, including: Both LB Chad Greenway and WR Percy Harvin rejoining the team on Tuesday; QB Christian Ponder and WR Jerome Simpson stealing the show on Wednesday; several Vikings players and coaches helping out at a Special Olympics Minnesota Punt, Pass and Kick clinic; WRs coach George Stewart answering questions in this week’s Pick 6; and WR Jerome Simpson appearing in this week’s Wobcast.

In such a jam-packed week, it’s easy for a few important topics to slip through the cracks. To prevent that from happening, let’s empty out the notebook from this week.

Win with Winfield
Injuries held CB Antoine Winfield to just 5 games in 2011, and the crafty veteran is entering his 14th season. But don’t expect his play to decline. In fact, as Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier explained earlier in the week, Winfield will be relied up for both leadership and playmaking ability this year.

“The fact that he’s here and participating in all of these OTAs, I told him the other day that I don’t take that for granted,” Frazier said, “and really appreciate him being here because he provides veteran leadership for some of the new faces that we have in the secondary and he’s a great player. We need his leadership, we need his playmaking ability on the football field and he’s played a number of years in this League but we don’t think his best football is behind him.”

Who will be the RB3?
The Vikings have as good a 1-2 punch at RB that you could ask for in Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart. Both are coming back from injury, however, which makes the team’s quest for a third RB important.

“That number three back for us really needs to be a guy who can step in and play in early downs, not just in third-down situations, which is more the norm for most third-down backs,” Frazier said. “There are guys who are more specialty types, and for us he needs to be a guy who can carry the ball as well as catch the ball out of the backfield. We are looking for a little bit more out of the third back this season.”

After Peterson and Gerhart, the Vikings have four RBs listed: Derrick Coleman, Jerome Felton, Lex Hilliard and Jordan Todman.

Sully takes charge
One of the best draft picks the Vikings have had since Rick Spielman joined the club is C John Sullivan. The Vikings selected Sullivan in the 6th round in 2008, and initially he studied behind veteran Matt Birk while also playing special teams. In 2009, Sullivan was the starter and snapped to future Hall of Famer Brett Favre. Those two seasons were key for Sullivan in terms of learning how to operate as an NFL center and as a leader.

Now, those two years are paying off both for Sullivan and the team. Sullivan is a leader on the offensive line, and he’s also taking on more of a leadership role with the whole team, according to Frazier.

“John is a guy we’re really counting on from a leadership standpoint,” Frazier said. “He was rewarded, as you know, this past season with a good contract and because of how he has matured on the football field, he’s really come along and he’s begun to accept that role as a leader.”

Frazier is right – it’s clear that Sullivan has taken a leadership role with the club. Every team has high draft picks who end up being impact players, but just as important as those players are the John Sullivans of the world. The Vikings are lucky to have Sullivan.

Another late-round gem?
Sullivan is one example of a late-round pick making a big difference on the team. Is Stephen Burton an example in the making? We don’t know yet. The former 7th-rounder out of West Texas A&M has flashed quite a bit during OTAs and he’s even caught the eye of Frazier.

“You can see the confidence and that’s a big thing for a receiver, big thing for any young player,” Frazier said. “He has tremendous athletic ability and he is one of those guys who can jump out of the gym and make the acrobatic catch, but his confidence, that’s the one thing that you can see is coming through now.”

Burton, who played in 3 games as a rookie last year, measures in at 6-1, 224 pounds and could also be a contributor on special teams, perhaps as a returner.

“The good thing for Stephen is that he was able to get some reps in ball games a year ago when I know he wasn’t expecting that early on and neither were we,” Frazier explained. “That helped him because he has a lot more confidence at this stage than when we had him in training camp.”

Burton has clearly taken a step forward in 2012, and I’m looking forward to watching him compete during the summer and into the preseason. The Vikings currently have 12 receivers on the roster.

We have 16 DB’s on the roster- but only 2 of them has stood out so far:
    Winfield+ Cook.

I haven’t heard a peep out of Bowman, Carr, Burton, and Josh Robinson.

Frazier already said J-Rob caught his attention with his speed and quickness returning punt.

Anyway, who said Cook was standing out?? LOL, keep wishing Spencer… and some day Cook will actually make a play and get his hands on the football.

Frazier expects more out of the 3rd RB? How about expecting more out of the entire Viking Team!

One more thing Frazier, Try keeping your Game plans out of the Media this time around! Last year it was “blah blah, we will try this, and that”

    Just zip it Frazier.

  8. By Oscar on Jun 7, 2012 | Reply

That #3 RB battle will be fun to keep an eye on. I hope Derrick Coleman and Jordan Todman see a lot of action in preseason.

However… Frazier, If you are looking for a guy who can step in and play in early downs, not just in third-down situations, someone who can carry the ball and catch the ball out of the backfield…. may I suggest PERCY HARVIN!

Simpson and J Wright are looking good… so why not use Harvin more in the backfield?

I belive we are going to be much improved this year, because last yeay we had all new coaches and no OTAs. The OTAs help with 2 things repetion helps us learn the plays better. 2) and the big thing is it helps us build continuity& comrodrey (bad spelling sorry) last year we did not get that chance.

Bad news for the people that loves Joe Webb.

I’ve been at all of the OTA practices and I’ve asked questions to the staff about their QBs and they said Sage Rofenfals will be QB number 2. Joe Webb wil be a QB number 3. They don’t find anything good from him and they might just play him around in any other positions besides QB. They are talking about if he increase any values they can try and trade him by the end of the season. They can also try and trade him fo draft picks which is 4th round pick or they will released him. Now since I’ve been at OTA I can see the competition between Sage and Joe. Sage is kicking Joe’s butt and there is no way he will get any chances on the field as a QB. He sucks dude, I wish he was never drafed in the first place.

  61. By Parody on Jun 8, 2012 | Reply

Welcome back Larson. Forgive me for having trouble believing the credibility of your claims, but they leave much to question.

Are these OTAs open to the general public? I always thought that they were private.

Who were the “staff” that you talked to? How much pull do they have in making personel decisions that you are suggesting? How in-depth was the conversation?

In what form were you talking to them? Was it with face-to-face communication, or written communication? Assuming it was face-to-face, was an interpretor present, or were you able to conduct the conversation without assistance? How reliable is your ability to communicate to such an individual in this regard (do you ever make mistakes)?

Vikings stadium deal could be destined for court
Posted by Mike Florio on March 2, 2012, 10:12 AM EDT

APThe fate of the so-called “People’s Stadium” in Minneapolis could ultimately be designed by people who wear black robes, one of whom coincidentally was once a member of the Purple People Eaters.

Yes, Alan Page and his cohorts on the Minnesota Supreme Court eventually could be called upon to resolve the question of whether the funding plan for the new Vikings stadium requires approval from the citizens of Minneapolis.

As of 1997, a citywide vote must be held on any investment of more than $10 million in a sports facility. Previously, the powers-that-be wanted to deposit the proceeds of a Minneapolis sales tax into a separate stadium authority in order to avoid the requirement of a public vote that, given the current mood of the populace, most likely would fail. Now, the plan is to redirect existing hospitality taxes that currently fund the city’s convention center, according to Eric Roper of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Supporters of the maneuver say that it’s merely a shifting of existing taxes. Mayor R.T. Ryback (pictured) says that voters can express any displeasure with that plan by voting him out of office.

But this thing won’t get brushed under the rug quite so easily. Already, a majority of the members of the Minneapolis City Council believe that a public vote on the proposal is required. So, for starters, one of them will have to be persuaded otherwise.

Even then, any adult member of the Minneapolis public — represented by a lawyer who’d crave the free publicity that would come from spearheading the effort — can file suit to force a vote. And then the lawsuit would be heard at multiple levels by judges who ultimately are accountable to the voters, too. Eventually, Page and company would get the case.

Without studying the language of the Minneapolis charter in detail (I soon will), it seems like a stretch to simply flip the switch on an existing tax and claim that the money harvested from business activities occurring in Minneapolis don’t amount to investment in a sports facility.

And so, basically, the folks in Arden Hills shouldn’t make other plans for that big piece of land just yet. And the folks who are trying to build a new NFL stadium in Los Angeles shouldn’t cross the Vikings off the list.

  88. By DRS on Jun 8, 2012 | Reply

Yes I know that article is an older article, though the issue is on track. They are going to the courts to stop the stadium plan, as it is now, from happening. Why so much resistances from so many Minnesota residents? Have they carried this us v. them too far? Is this what you get when you become envious of others and what they have? Why cannot people see the benefits of this new stadium deal?

DRS-Will it ever end. What a joke. Zigi and co. should start the digging process right now grab your shovels and hire some big plows to scoop up some dirt and lets see who tries to stop them.

Oh the insanity of it all! For something so good for the state of Minnesota, why then do so many hate the idea of a new stadium? I thought we were done with this issue but the opponents keep it alive, now we must wait for the courts to say yes or no before the shovels hit the ground. That could take years, Oh well, on and on it goes.

I heard similar things about Webb from my buddy who has been to the OTA’s as well. He said that Ponder is looking agile, smart and that his arm is strong. he said that Webb is very unsure of himself. Rosenfels is solid as well so it doesn;t surprise me to hear that Webb may be 3rd string now. As far as CB, I am not sure. He also said that Cook looked ok and that our newbies are holding their own as well. One thing he did say that really got me pumped up was that our WR’s were tearng it up and that Ponder was very happy to have found Chemistry with the Alabama Bro’s! Can’t wait to see these Vike’s show their teeth in preseason.

FREE SPEECH ZONE | Can the Vikings Stadium be stopped?

BY ED FELIEN, FREE SPEECH ZONE June 06, 2012

So, it seems clear that the City Council has violated its charter in agreeing to spend as much as $890 million on a new Vikings football stadium without submitting that question to the voters.

What can be done about it?

The most obvious course of action would be to hire a lawyer to file a Writ of Mandamus in District Court ordering the City Council to follow its charter and submit the question of city tax money going to pay for a sports stadium to the voters of Minneapolis in the next general election in November

The fight is not over yet, though I wish it was and the Vikings where starting construction now. I will have to keep the faith that the evil forces that are trying to stop the stadium will be defeated and the new stadium will be built some day soon.

I have witnessed and read too many cases of comas, cancers, etc that were suppose to be the final say where one day through prayer, miracles, and other interventions, the person who was never supposed to awake or walk again or survive more than a few months DID.

It was a colision with a classmate during a ski trip. I landed just short of my neck on the edge of my ski…

If you are in coma you have to fight, even if nobody hears you. I tried to move, to speak, but the only thing I could do was to cry. The fear that life will change forever and the beating you take, because everybody tries to beat you out of coma, is freaking scary. Try to think positive (family), try to move ( I did it for 15 hours ) and move on. Noboy knew how bad it was and I woke up during some tests… You have to motivate the them to live and speak with them as positive as you can. That is not just being totally drunk…
That is being close to unconsciousness !!!…

Glad the Vikings got Kalil… :)

I wholeheartedly agree OTK. Blackmon was one of the top draft prospects who I was not all that excited about to begin with. It looked like he could provide us help we needed, but not as much as we needed it in other areas, and not as much as I believe Floyd (the #2 WR in the draft) would have been able to contribute.

Watch out for Arizona this year. They now have Fitzgerald and Floyd. They’re going to give our secondary a big challenge inside the Dome.

The more I hear about the WR’s on the team right now…The more I like the decisions made in the draft…

OTK – I think Floyd has a great opportunity to prove you wrong. The veteran leadership that he’ll be playing with is extremely valuable. I believe that a similar sort of leadership helped Fitzgerald get himself on the right track long before he even got into the NFL. He learned from Cris Carter and Randy Moss as a ball boy for the Vikings as a kid. Then when he got into the NFL, he had the effects of Anquan Boldin to help him out as a veteran teammate.

Now he shows that he valued the leadership provided by paying it forward, helping out others on his team and having joint off-season practices with others in the NFL whom he respects. I think it will help to create an even stronger comaraderie that both Fitz and Floyd are from the Twin Cities; Fitz born in Minneapolis and Floyd born in St. Paul.

These two are going to be unstoppable for the next 4+ years together in the NFL. Watch out for them to compete for recognition as the best tandem ever to play WR together. The only question I have is, do they have a QB capable of fully utilizing their skills?

Parody- Nice write up about Fitzgerald and Floyd. I agree, they will be good…. But best tandem ever?

They need to prove they are the best current NFL WR random first. The competion right now is pretty good. Here are some off the top tandems that hit the 2000 yard club last season.

    Victor Cruz – Hakeem Hicks
    Mike Wallace – Antonio Brown
    Roddy White – Julio Jones
    Greg Jennings – Jordy Nelson
    Calvin Johnson – Nate Burleson
    Wes Welker- Deion Branch

With that said, I think Fitzgerald and Floyd have a great shot to be among the top yardage tandems- even with the questions at the QB position.

Last year Fitzgerald and Early Doucet combined for 2130 yards. 598 yards short of Cruz and Hicks at the top spot.

I think I might know the reasoning behind this “time-out” cr@p. When things were “normal” here, we would typically get hundreds of responses on each blog, to the point where some people would be asking Wobschall for a new blog…….”New Blog” means more work for Wobschall. By limiting the number of entries each blogger is allowed, this cuts down the amount of responses, thereby cutting down the amount of blogs he has to compose.

Even if my theory is wrong, we still deserve some sort of explanation for the drastic change in this site. By denying or refusing to admit anything is different, the author of these blogs is showing cowardice, contempt for the fans, and an unwillingness to speak the truth.

    ———————————————————————————————-

Throughout OTA’s we’ve been hearing about how well the WR’s were doing: Jenkins, Wright, Aromoshadu, Burton, and he|| even Bryan Walters had his day. But something we haven’t been hearing about is how well the CB’s are doing. I have not heard a peep about how well Bowman, Carr, Brandon Burton, and Josh Robinson are doing in coverage.

So if the WR’s are making plays, then that means CB’s are NOT making plays! Its just that simple, if a WR does well that indicates the person guarding him….can NOT guard him!!!

Nova– very nicely done. Good reasoning. SO, LAST NIGHT, right after I tested the time outs– and told Sir Spencer– you are right, we won the war— I was placed on time out— I could not get back on, even two or three hours later while I saw everyone else back on. Is Titus in his own corner?

From what I read, JA was the only player not at the voluntary workouts. During the first week of OTA’s, Frazier said that he expected JA would should up the next week. I was just wondering if he did.

I know he doesn’t NEED to be there but to have 99% of the team show up to try and turn around a 3 – 13 season one would think he would feel kind of dumb being the ONLY one not to show. Especially when the two injured, offensive super stars were there running hills.

The “leader” of the defense should be there with his boys, no excuses.

  251. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Jun 9, 2012 | Reply

Here are the two things that have me concerned the most………….1-Head Coach- after blowing halftime leads of 17-7 and 17-0 in weeks 1and 2, what the f-ck kinda speech did u give at halftime in week 3 while leading 20-0 at HOME………….2-Special Teams because im tired of watching opponents start at midfield or beyond, if they dont take it to the house, plus a rookie kicker.

And then FRED JONES is showing Frankenstein clips for who knows what reason— STOP IT! Children are on this site– Spencer turn your head!

Just reading someone’s comment about Webb not being a good QB and his records show. Just saying… Webb has never even got practice much with starters. Favre was the main QB until he got injured. Then started Beat philly had a great game! Next season we brought in Ponder and Mcnabb! Not even a 2nd Qb he was prob taking snaps with the practice squad here and there and mixing as a Wr.

Came in when mcnabb busted and ponder got hurt. Almost came back and pulled a win vs the lions. He has never spent much quality time with any of those receivers. He needs time to work on timing and stuff with the first stringers. Yet he still manages win’s and same close games.

I can hardly wait until everyone bites back on their tongues when Ponder gets replaced half way though. Webb comes in to save the day! then what we finally going to have faith in this guy? Even Favre seen lots of talent in this guy. Why don’t we? You give this guy a full year as a starter and we may have something here…. His accuracy is an issue but that can be solved with more snaps in practice. He has a powerful arm and man can he run with the ball.

Unfortunately once we realize Ponder is not the franchise QB and Webb shows his skill set once more… I project we still aim at matt barkley in the draft and again make a mistake at not giving the nod to Webb

Mike was responding to my e-mails very quickly that day, giving me the impression that he didn’t have any other messages in his inbox, thus that nobody else was letting him know of their troubles.

The more Mike hears about this, the more likely he will be to try to find a solution. I just ask everyone to try to keep it free of insults or vulgarity. How many of you can say that you frequently respond rationally to someone who speaks to you with insults and vulgarity?

I think Mike Wobschall is doing a fine job. He does a lot of different things on this website that I enjoy. It’s ota’s not many answers at this point of the year. Things will become more clear when training camp starts, if its the answers of the vikings roster people are concerned about. Is it about not saying one specific word, who cares pull another word out of the vocabulary that works. If we need to post 10 consecutive comments in a row, i don’t know what to tell you on that one… seems a little obsessive.

I see no reason to switch blogs. I have not experienced a time-out yet and I blog pretty regularly. I’m not quite sure what happened in my absence that took people from somewhat annoyed to completely outraged, but it seems pretty ridiculous to me.

KoN-I’m not sure exactly what happened, I have not been on the blog site as much as I used to. I have checked out the other blog site and have posted on it. There is no reason why you cannot be active on both sites.

Time outs? are you going by posting a post and nothing posts? it does that all the time, you have to post 3 times some time,,,,it has been that way since day one for me, the 3rd time it will post…………o’k, I will be here wearing a baseball cap, shaped like a dragon head, gold, some purple, vikings horns comming out of it, skol skol skol here comes the season, simpson the long ball, peterson out of the back field, J. Allen on the line, Elimimen in the linebacker position……….nothing can stop us, we fear nothing and nobody.

  361. By Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus on Jun 10, 2012 | Reply

RICHARD– NO, We are not talking the same problem. NO. I have experienced what you have from time to time, all of us have. We are talking about being locked out from posting for at least 6-8 hours at a time– no matter how many variations of times we try to post— and believe me, we have tried. We have tried everything to get back into a discussion– to no avail. Maybe 20-30 times trying and under different usernames, with different email addresses, and with different browsers. SO, stop. Stop with what you think we are talking about– WE ARE NOT. WE ARE NOT going to be condescended to with nonsensical circular reasoning when WE ARE THE FANS– WE ARE THE FANS.

I’m not saying that I won’t post on the other blog VO, just that a lot of people seem to be acting like they are done with this blog forever. Seems a bit melodramatic to me.

  363. By RichardA1 on Jun 10, 2012 | Reply

    Yeah sure.

  364. By Immure on Jun 10, 2012 | Reply

I think alot of the teams problems last year was do to lack of chemistry. On defense and offense. I think this season our front seven will have alot better chemistry and will preform better. I think our secondary will be better too as long as Winfeild and Cook stay healthy and out of trouble (Cook). The Safety is still a concern I just hope that both Smith and Raymond will live up to expectations.

  365. By Immure on Jun 10, 2012 | Reply

I’m still not that confident in our O-Line though. Kahlil should be a big help but there are alot of question marks at the other spots mainly R/L G and RT. Can Johnson preform better as a LG? Who’s going to win the starting RG job? Will Loadholt step his game up?

  366. By sunnyazvike on Jun 10, 2012 | Reply

I like our O-line. kahlil johnson sully fusco/schwartz loadholt. We should dominate some dlines this year. I hope we still smash the run down people’s throat though, and try not to get too much involved in the pass first option with a developing QB. Toby has my hopes up. He always seems to be shifty with good speed. I always see him falling foward and shredding tackles. I would like to see Percy as our 3rd down back and insert Wright if he is capable into the slot. I miss chester taylor sometimes that guy was always moving the chains for us.

  367. By RichardA1 on Jun 10, 2012 | Reply

The coachs have a little experience now to, they should have a feel for what it takes.

  368. By Immure on Jun 10, 2012 | Reply

It is nice to know that Ponder has alot of confidence in some of these receivers mainly Simpson, Burton, and Manny. Once Harvin gets fully healthy that will be a big boost. Haven’t heard a whole lot on Jenkins (hows his recovery coming?), Devin Aromashodu, Wright, or Childs (injury) this off season . Also how have the TE’s been doing I haven’t heard about them yet. But then again its still early in the off season.

  369. By Immure on Jun 10, 2012 | Reply

Who do you guys think will win the starting job at DE opposite of J.A.? Griffen or Robison? Or who will play next to Big Kev? Guion, Ballard, or Evans?

KON, what happened was the blogger timeouts got in the way of fluid conversation to the point of lameness. It was really bad for some. The other blog lets you say the full name of our qb too. For the sake of fun if you havent checked it out yet do. Titus, fred, purplehaze, richard, sunny, immure, its a peaceful and funny way to protest, and when preseason starts coming you know well be here. Cant hurt to check it out…
