Greenway, Harvin Participate In OTA #4; Other Observations

Posted by Mike Wobschall on June 5, 2012 – 12:28 pm

The Vikings returned to the outdoor practice fields at Winter Park on Tuesday for Organized Team Activity (OTA) #4, and two of the team’s best players – LB Chad Greenway and WR Percy Harvin - rejoined the team for on-field activities. Weather conditions were ideal – sunny skies and warm temperatures – and the team worked for approximately 90 minutes.

Both Greenway and Harvin looked fresh and explosive during practice, and their presence along with a weekend for all the players to rest and recover after last week’s three OTAs yielded an up-tempo practice environment. We caught up with Harvin after practice for a quick interview and will have that posted to vikings.com shortly.

Here are a few other observations from OTA #4 on Tuesday…

– Tuesday’s practice opened with a special teams period, and Special Teams Coordinator Mike Priefer had several guys in the rotation to field kickoffs. By my count there were 8 players catching kicks – WRs Stephen Burton, Harvin, Bryan Walters and Jarius Wright; CBs Marcus Sherels, Josh Robinson and Nicholas Taylor; and RB Jordan Todman. The point here is not so much to try and track who’s taking the reps, but more to illustrate that Priefer is looking at the entire roster in an attempt to fill the kickoff return role. This OTA portion of the offseason is not the time to narrow down the competition by figuring out who can’t fill the role, rather now is the time to discover guys who can fill the role so a robust competition can be held in training camp and the preseason.

– It’s mentioned above that Greenway made his return to the field, and he looked good in doing so. He’s the leader of that LB group and is one of the team’s most consistent performers. Another who’s stood out among that group, though, is Erin Henderson. He had a good week last week and hit the ground running this week, too, making splash plays in both the special categories and 9-7 periods of practice.

– A couple of young DBs tallied INTs during practice. S Mistral Raymond got one late in practice and fellow S Robert Blanton, the team’s 5th-round pick in this year’s draft, grabbed one a few moments earlier during 7-on-7 action. Overall the defense is playing a bit faster than the offense at this point, but that is to be expected this early in the OTAs and offseason programming. The offense has clearly taken a step forward since OTA #1 and I expect the offense will continue making great strides as training camp approaches.

– It wasn’t all defense on the highlight reel on Tuesday. QB Christian Ponder connected with TE Kyle Rudolph on a terrific touch pass that was perfectly placed over a pair of LBs and underneath a CB and S late in practice. Rudolph fully extended and stayed on his feet to make the catch. Walters also had a full-extension catch late in practice where he had to dive among defenders to secure the ball.

– Early in practice both Manny Arceneaux and Devin Aromashodu made highlight-caliber catches. Aromashodu’s came first on a pass from Ponder with CB Chris Carr in coverage. Aromashodu stopped his route short, leaped high in the air and made the catch over Carr (who was in perfect position), and came down with both feet in bounds and the ball secured while falling onto the left sideline. Moments later, Arceneaux made his catch in similar fashion – more of a back-shoulder fade, this time from Joe Webb.

– The Vikings will hold OTA #5 on Wednesday at Winter Park and it will be open to the media. We’ll have continuing coverage of OTAs and the Vikings offseason program here on vikings.com, so stay tuned.

    Mike,

Were the INTs a result of throws that weren’t quite perfect, a result of the S’s making great plays, or the WR making a route error?

Just trying to get better insight into player development.

thanks mike, for keeping us up to date.. MORE MORE MORE….i live in los angeles, and love to see anything on our team…

by the way…we are looking 4 a team, but i wanted the vikings to stay in minny, because that is where they belong, even tho’ they were talking about moving them here…

i have never been to a football game, since we don’t have a team, but i am happy to watch them on NFL sunday ticket..

also, i was a packer fan, but came over to the vikings with brett, and stayed..LOL, can you believe it…go vikes..

Joe Webb can zip those back-shoulder throws!

There was another Joe by the name of Kapp who used to throw jump p a s s e s. Perhaps Joe Webb could learn to throw those when faced with constant p a s s rushing opponents.

I hope that Frazier remembers that option, if it’s needed during the season.

Who trew the INTs? Great to see the compettion for the other starting Safety spot looking promising.

How are Schwartz, C. Johnson, Fusco, and Love doing in their battles to win starting jobs on the Vikings Offensive Line?

Is Everson Griffen beating out Robison for the Defensive End opposite J. Allen?

Has Blair Walsh been splitting the uprights during special team scrimmages?
Is he doing that more than the 60% he had his senior year in college?
(60% or, whatever it was, goes back to the days of Fred Cox and real turf. That is not acceptable!!!)

Alot about the players, what about the coach’s? what do they have to say? how do you no if the coach is doing a good job coaching, besides waiting for the season to be half over and they lost every game. Go “Dragon Heads”!

  15. By Frederick Jones on Jun 5, 2012 | Reply

    RogerTheVike,

I will admit it would be nice to know who threw the int, but let’s not forget that often it is caused by the receiver running the wrong way, or having aligator arms.

Many times it is the offensive line that causes the ball to be thrown to early, or the QB to scramble. Let’s not forget that.

Old man Jones wants to know how the position battles are shaping up. Does it look like Schwartz is the man he was advertized to be, or is he just fat? Is C. Johnson better at Left Guard, and how do we know that at this point?

Who are the upcoming stars on the Vikings?

Fred the reason I asked about who trew the INTs is because they could have been made on poor reads. But the reason you gave could easily have been the cause too. Even could have been a WR stoping short. Wobby can you give a detailed break down of what happened to lead to the INTs?

Well it looks like we just signed a rookie WR AJ Love (6-foot-2, 208 pounds) had 56 catches for 843 yards and six touchdowns over the 2008 and ’09 seasons, then sat out 2010 with a knee injury. He returned in 2011 but finished with only nine catches for 122 yards and one score.

At South Florida’s pro day on March 20, Love ran the 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds and posted a 30½-inch vertical jump.

Singletary’s kid didn’t make the team past the 1st rookie “camp”

Ponder & Simpson are really starting to develope a “chemistry”, & Ponder took him out to eat as well, which he is appearently doing with everyone on the team….
OL, WR’s, TE’s etc. I’m sure will be the first one’s but he is also doing it with the defence….

Simpson say’s he loves the bike trails, where I could not sat, but keep your eye’s open when out riding, you never know….

I know in nickle or dime he will play inside but in our base D is it going to be winfield? how has bowman or carr looked? do either of them have the speed to cover on the outside? Last question is when you have a jerome simpson on your wobcast can you get the details of what he see’s from our own cb’s. Like jerome who covers you the best, who has potential from the younger guys. If you have a CB on your wobcast can you ask them who is hardest to cover, and who has the most potential from the younger guys.

So many question and so few answers have been provided. We as Vikings fans understand who the play makers are so interviewing Harvin was useless . We want to hear how the weaknesses on this roster are looking like a strength or whether we are in for a another long season. please no more token interviews . Come on Mike you can do better than what we have been seeing and reading so far.

Our secondary will be VASTLY IMPROVED,,,,,NO QUESTION !!!!
Why ? Because they could NOT BE ANY WORSE.
We will have a minimum of 5 NEW MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR’S, 3 of which will be rookies.(6 if you count Cook who missed most of the season)
So will they be as good as we, and the coaches etc. want them to be ? Highly doubtful, at least in the short term.
They will continue to get better as the season progresses, and into next season. And Spielman WILL continue to try to improve the personnel.
I for one am very anxious to see just how good these guy’s can become. I think we’ve improved by leap’s and bound’s over last year !!!!!!!!!!

We are experiencing the beginning of the New Blog Order. Forget about the “freedoms” that you used to love under the anarchy of a Capitalist Blogging Society. It came with far too many risks that we cannot allow you to take on. We are protecting you from dangers that you cannot possibly fathom, mostly because we are still in the process of thinking them up.

No, now the New Blog Order will protect you from any dangers that we can create, which will happen once every 5-blogs or so and then be promptly policed just to prove that we are protecting you. But forget I said that…it might make you apprehensive of the purity of the plan.

I think that this year’s preseason games will be more interesting to watch this year than it has been in a long time, because we don’t know who many of the starters will be. @Lance: Lance I’m Not trying to be a School teacher or crittic, but it’s just my guess that you were trying to spell Rooting which is the correct spelling when you want to root for someone. The Word routing is use when you want to send something somewhere. which is to route a package or highway. anyway I just wanted you to know. the One and Only PuckerTrucker!!!!!!!!Skol Fans

Don’t know if some of the older poster’s remember me. Been like two years since I posted last. I stop by occasionally to read what’s new, kept up with the stadium news, and so on.

Anyway, I just wanted to say “Hi, All”

Hmmm, got to keep it on-topic, huh?

Well, glad Harvin and Greenway are back on the field.
Interceptions, no matter how they happened are a plus in my book when it comes to our secondary.

    Yeah, that’s all I got.

    See ya’ll later.

    PS.

The St. Louis Cardinals are World Champs, Again. Now, I’m way off-topic. For folks that don’t know me or remember I’m that guy that’s originally from St. Louis also known as “Baseball Heaven” but I’m a Viking fan through and through.

I remember you Ricefield. Hope you’ve been well. It’s kind of ironic that you re-enter as I am leaving. I have had it with this censorship ; the ability to banter back-and-forth with fellow bloggers was what really appealed to me on this blog. Wobschall’s condescending attitude towards our inquiries about what is going on were the last straw for me. He and his gutless cyber-goons can keep their little controlling tactics. I hope I was able to put a smile on some of your faces during my 2+ years here…..take care, everyone, from Sonja and myself.

Sad to see you leave, Some of your little tidbits were always down right funny, and did make my day, more then once..

Can only hope that Mike Wobschall wakes up and leaves we Posters alone to do our stuff.

Scott Walker is anti democracy-his stance against collective bargaining for workers rights would be akin to the NFL owners cancelling the players union collective bargainig process. Walker is a slime bag whose only concern is to shut out the voice of the middle class worker. What next? Wisconsin becomes LOL a “Right To Work” state? Good luck with that…..
BTW the voice of the peole was bought and paid by the wealthy REpub machine…Walker outspent his opponent 7 to 1

The website censorship policy may not be in Mike W’s hands………it most likely comes from WordPress, the hosting site, and the upper levle of Vikings publicity/mgmnt /IT personnel
