Double Duty: Vikings Construct Playground After OTA #3

Posted by Mike Wobschall on May 31, 2012 – 2:59 pm

The Vikings conducted OTA #3 on Thursday at Winter Park as they continue preparations for the 2012 season. And while the team’s focus is on the upcoming season, they shifted that focus slightly on Thursday afternoon to help a school in the local community.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Vikings partnered with the Toro Company and KaBOOM! to build a new and safe playground, with this year’s effort going to help Sheridan Arts Magnet School in Northeast Minneapolis. KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.

“This is an outstanding effort by everyone involved,” said KaBOOM! project manager Allie Farrington. The goal is to create a happy and healthy place for kids to enjoy the outdoors in a manner that is consistent with Toro’s environmental mission and the Vikings commitment to making a difference in the community. This is a great experience for the community to see their leaders with shovel in-hand to try and make a direct and positive impact.”

More than 250 volunteers, including 100+ Vikings staff members, team executives, Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders, Head Coach Leslie Frazier, the Vikings coaching staff and current Vikings players teamed with Toro employees and organizers from KaBOOM! to complete the project.

The new playground’s design is based on drawings provided by students who attended the Design Day and will use the playground, with the total cost of the playground being split by the Vikings and Toro, their community partner.

“This has been a fantastic day,” Sheridan Arts Magnet School principal Al Pitt said. “We are changing our grade configuration here and going to more K-5 students, so this is what we needed. We are grateful to the Vikings, Toro, Mortenson Construction for providing the tools, our board members, the YMCA, local community members and everyone else who made this day and event possible.”

The Vikings are working hard right now to improve the product that will be on the field in 2012. But fans can also be proud of their team away from the field, as the Vikings organization continues its efforts to improve the local community as well.

I like Purple Reign, Purple Punch. Some how, Maybe M. Wobshall could organize this, Names get sent in, then the fans vote on which one. Purple People Eaters everybody thinks of the team from the late 60′s, 70′s. Washington Red had the Hogs. Purple reign, they could play Purple rain by Prince, that would go good!!

A lot of people seem to be aiming for nicknames preceded by the color purple. I’m not saying it’s bad, but what if we look in a different direction – aiming for nicknames that are Viking/Norse related?

I’ve been reading up a bit to this regard and think that “The Berserkers” would be perfect:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker

But as some others have stated, they’ll need to earn it first. We can just stick with the Purple Crunch Berries until then.

    @Great Irish,

No I don’t have the films. However I did concentrate on Sullivan many times on pass plays. He often was pushed backwards and wound up on his hindside.

On running plays, you may recall that A.D. received several “running back sacks” when running up the middle. These sacks are usually the fault of the offensive line, which you may recall was highly Offensive last season.

In no way am i defending abdullah cause i think hes terrible, but 2010 he had 3 INTs, and he actually had 1INT last season as well. But i cant recall anyone else getting an INT so thats gotta count for something?

Thor’s Hammer sounds cool, we need M. Wobshall or star tribune to set up a voting process,,,,,,is that how nick names come about?

I don’t think that the 70′s Steelers sat in the locker room searching for a cool name for their D…….Ditto 70′s Vikes. Their play inspired someone somewhere to give them the name.

Rocksalt, relax–I used violet to be funny. I have some decent ideas to name the defense and the stadium— but do you think I really would post them in a public domain? Ha ha ha! No way.

  140. By RichardA1 on Jun 1, 2012 | Reply

Yeah, but some of the Vikings did not like the name Purple People Eaters, it was taken from a 50′s song. Name the Vikes, name the Stadium would be a good topic for Mr.. Wobschall, a contest.

abdullah was actually our best saftey the past couple of seasons. Remember 2010 he picked off cuter twice in a game and was one of the heroes in that tuesday game against philly. He picked off vick twice i think.

I think it would be cool to see up on th3e scoreboard a Viking ship getting closer with Vikings wheeling swords, the Dragon head on the front spitting out flames!
