It’s a hard part of life in the NFL, but sometimes it’s just time to move on. Longwell had great service while with the Vikings. He made a lot of clutch kicks and of course made the routine kick consistently. But he was just 78.6% on FGs last year and will turn 38 before the season begins.
A classy player on the field and a great person off the field. Always accountable in the locker room, a good role model, etc. I wish him nothing but the best of luck in whatever the future holds for him.

Longwell is the Packers all-time leading scorer and the Vikings 3rd all-time leading scorer. An illustrious career and a career that could continue on with another team. Good luck to Ryan.

Look I have no problem moving on from Longwell, save money and go younger I get it,,,,,, But Blair Walsh was only 21 for 35 last year and only hit 54% on FG’s over 30 yards. Thats ugly!!!!!!

will be missed but he miss 3fg’s in one game this season will miss you Ryan but time too move on and get younger
By Mike Wobschall on May 7, 2012 | Reply
True, but Walsh was 40 of 46 as a sophomore and junior, and he hit a 56-yarder last year. Also, keep in mind that Longwell was just 57.1% in college.
By Mike Wobschall on May 7, 2012 | Reply
That’s not a shot against Lognwell, it just goes to show that FG% is naturally lower in college, and it doesn’t mean a guy is going to be a poor kicker.

Sad to hear Ryan will no longer be a Viking. He’s a class act that I wish could stay for many more years. I realize last year wasn’t up to his normally high standard. The time has to come sooner or later. It is just hard to lose an individual of his moral make-up. I can only hope Ryan realizes how thankful us fans are for his time with the purple and gold. He will always be one of my favs. despite his years in that cheese state. SKOL!!!

The question I have to ask is why not let the two of them compete for the starting job this year? If Longwell didn’t wish to compete, I can accept that, but if this a call by Spielman or Fraizer. Booooooo!!!!!!
By Spencer on May 7, 2012 | Reply
Throughout this year I have been verbally attacked by pretty much everyone here because you guys felt as tho all I did was constantly bash the players.
Well, lets recap some of the things I said….
Before the Redskins game I said I would take CJ over AP because I always felt that AP was more prone to injuries. Well..we know how that novel ended.
I’ve said Cedric Griffin is a scub, hes no longer on the roster.
I’ve said Va$hittte Shiancoe is the most overrated player on the team, hes no longer on the roster.
I’ve said Ryan Shortwell cant get it done anymore, hes no longer on the roster.
Just face it guys, I know my stuff.

Spence, you have also bashed Jared Allen, Brian Robison, Ponder, and Leslie Frazier. Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you were mad that the Wilfs gave Spielman the position of GM when he was first promoted. So yeah you were right on a few things, but guess what CJ had a bad year and all of the other three had down years and did not fit the get young theme.

Cedrick Griffin is has been trying to come back from two serious injuries that doesn’t make him a scrub He has more heart and grit that Cook ever had. He will actually get in there and hit at least he did before his last injury. You don’t know what the heck you are talking aobut Spence and you are barely tolerable around here.

at under 30 yrds Longwell is almost 100 percent. Players get older and the range is effected. but to cut him without giving him a chance to compete is not right. It shows no loyalty to your veteran players and specifically the leading scorer of the team last year.

Longwell is the constant that got the Vikings through a lot of tough games. He should be given a chance to keep his job. He could teach Mr. Georgia some things. His 16 years of commitment should speak volumes! That loyalty through the good and bad can not be found often with today’s players. It is the Vikings loss and another team’s gain. Okay, this is a bit delayed, but pick CJ over AP? CJ is an overrated running back. He had barely 100 more yards than him last year, and he played 4 more games than Peterson. Spencer, whatchu talkin bout foo’? How can you call yourself a Vikings fan if you would rather have anyone else besides AP at this point in time. Until he gets old and wrinkly, or breaks a leg, or whatever, I will always pick him over any other running back in the league today.
By Spencer on May 7, 2012 | Reply
For a 16 game season, I would take CJ over AP only because AP is a little injury prone.
I never said CJ is better than AP. So lets just calm down guys…

I agree Nova. Politicians like Zellers crying about getting a better deal. When they had 10 years to get a deal but did nothing but ignore it. Normal people know when you ignore a problem it only gets worse. So here we are time to put up or shut up and Zellers has the nerve to open his mouth and act firm about his inability to take a stance.
Zellers should never be in politics again ….
A reporter also asked: “Mr. Speaker you also said that you wanted to be on the 50-yard line to celebrate with the governor, so why not vote for the bill?”
Zellers in response: “No. I said, when asked do you want to deny him his win, and I said no, I think he should be there on the 50-yard line, flipping the coin if the stadium pa.sses, if it’s signed into law. I didn’t say I wanted to be there with him. ”
After he left the formal press conference, reporters sought to clarify what he thought was a mistake.
Reporter 1: “Can you explain what you ‘misspoke’ on? Do you not hope the bill will pa.ss? Or do you hope the bill will pa.ss?
Zellers: “I said what I said. I made a mistake. I can admit it.”
Reporter 1: “Right but what was the mistake?”
Reporter 2: “You actually don’t want it to pa.ss, is that what you’re saying?”
Zellers: “No.”
Reporter 1: “You want it to pa.ss?”
Zellers: “I’m not going to make any more mistakes.”
Reporter 1: “Right. But you said you misspoke and you made a mistake. I’m trying to figure out what you think was the mistake. That’s an honest question.”
Zellers: “I corrected it.”
Reporter 1: “So what’s the correction?…Can you explain?”
Zellers: “I said that the Vikings are an as.set I want to see them stay. And what was misinterpreted was that I wanted the bill (to) pa.ss but I wasn’t going to vote for it. I said I can’t vote for the bill. I want to see the Vikings stay I think they’re an as.set, I’ve said that many times.”

It was time to get rid of Longwell. He was an black squishy banana. Doesn’t have the leg strength and was showing decreased accuracy. It’s a perfect time to move on, with no expecations for a playoff run this year, and a rookie kicker who’s plenty green. Longwell was good for a while, but releasing him opens up cap room to add a solid veteran at another position (possibly re-sign Henderson?).

I think the chances of the stadium to pass the house right now from 1-10…
Are now at about a 9…
But still would need to pass in the senate…
And then the Vikings also sitting down with a committee having some terms and language of the bill to hash out…
If the senate votes to support the bill also…
One big issue being the naming rights of the stadium…Minnesota politicians wants a percentage of that revenue…

Longwell was great for us but it was his time. Even with the Kickoffs moving up 5 yards he still couldnt kick it in the endzone. Its nice to have a Kicker who can take the pressure off our coverage team and take guys like Devin Hester and Randal Cobb out of the game by taking away the return game, the only thing they are good at. It also takes pressure off our defense because it doesn’t give the opposing offense such a short field to work with like we are so used to seeing.
Walsh still has to go out there and get the job done. I remember us bringing in Lloyd the kickoff specialist from the Panthers and he proved to be a bust for us. I have confidence in Walsh and his college FG% does not concern me. I’m hoping he brings the same consistency Longwell brought and then some.

When Reagan went to fight whoever he went to fight. I know it wasnt a “war” but he had a fight somewhere. He raised taxes to pay the bill ..
George Bush 2 went to WAR … and lowered taxes !!!!! Now we are broke …

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for Viking Fans in the history of our State.
Five score years ago, a great Organization, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Minnesota Vikings. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Viking Fans who had been seared in the flames of withering negligence . It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their first draft.
But 50 years later, the Viking Fan still is not free. 50 years later, the life of the Viking Fan is still sadly crippled by the manacles of politicians and the chains of the GOP. 50 years later, the Viking Fan lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. 50 years later, the Viking Fan is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.
In a sense we have come to our state’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our stadium wrote the magnificent words of the Stadium Bill and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every Minnesotan was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all Fans, yes, black fans as well as white fans, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of tailgating, beer , and the pursuit of a Super Bowl Champioship.

It is obvious today that Minnesota has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her franchise of color purple are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, Minnesota has given the Viking people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient support.” But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient votes in the great vaults of opportunity of this state. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of the NFL and the security of the Vikings. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind politicians of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of franchiseless to the sunlit path of Viking justice. Now is the time to lift our team from the quick sands of political injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of Viking fans.

@PurpleNation,
Do we know that the Vikings will use the Blazer package?
Are we going to go with the offense totally unchanged? Of course not. But like most coaches they think they have a great offense.
With the addition of Kalil, the Arkansas Receivers, and hopefully some great young d-backs, it will be interesting.
Heck, we will just have a young team. I want to see Frazier’s team play well. It’s for the best.
By PurpleNation on May 7, 2012 | Reply
BTW I assume all the naysayers seem to forget that the Vikings also tend to face two very dangerous kick-off and punt returners like Devin Hester of the bears and Randall Cobb of cheese land not once, but twice a year and they’re both able to take it to the house on any given return against our suspect special teams and an average legged kicker.
I mean let’s face it guys/gals, Longwell does seem to have lost quite a few steps (Leg strength and accuracy/touch) over the years!
By PurpleNation on May 7, 2012 | Reply
You can also count the return guy from the lions as well um I believe his name was Stephon Logan or something?
By PurpleNation on May 7, 2012 | Reply
I’m just anxious to see how this “YOUTH” movement works out in the next couple years or so and then we’ll also get to truly decide/pass judgement on whether we need to clean house with a whole new coaching staff and a whole new front office so if frazier or spielman ever get to read this then all eyes are on you both!
By PurpleNation on May 7, 2012 | Reply
@Frederick Jones, for some reason they (Vikings coaching staff) may feel impelled to give Ponder a break/breather depending on his performance and how our season is going.
By PurpleNation on May 7, 2012 | Reply
If they do decide to run a few “Blazer” plays on occasion this upcoming season I would sure love to see them direct snap it to Josh Robison with Percy and Joe Webb in the backfield and AP lined out wide with Jarius Wright in the slot as well or something like that! D

Ryan Longwell doesn’t have the leg and won’t ever have the leg the VIkings need. ‘)9 NFC championship game….. Farve’s pick wouldn’t have happenned if coaches felt confident in Londwell kicking a 56 Yd field goal. His inability to kick a long field goal might have cost us a chance at the super bowl. Good move to cut him, no reason to was that much money on a kicker in a rebuilding mode. Why pay millions on a kicker and leave a rookie you just drafted on the sideline. Longwell will be fine, he will get signed if he still wants to play, and if he doen’t than he can retire. Vikings did what was best for the team. Lost a great locker room guy. But clears some cap to get this roster moving back forward.
